New you in ’22! Hello my juicy friends and welcome to 2022 and this special Super Juice Me! 11/2 issue of Juiced! magazine. It is almost ten years since the filming of the original groundbreaking documentary Super Juice Me! and almost the same amount of time since I have personally completed the full 28-day programme. However, in late 2021 I was inspired to do it once again and also to make a short film about it for my YouTube channel, Juice Tube. There were a few reasons for doing it again and I explain nearly all of these in an exclusive interview in this issue of Juiced! I say nearly, because you’ll have to watch the actual mini documentary to get the full skinny (pardon the pun) and see the results. One thing is for certain, just like the original Super Juice Me! documentary, there is no way anyone can watch this and not be inspired to ‘super juice’ themselves. Alongside this insight into the story behind my new movie, I’m also delighted to introduce you to Chris Baber. Chris is the new celebrity chef on the block and he’s kindly shared some of the recipes from his debut cookbook. Chris is the real deal and not only has a genuine passion for cooking, but he keeps everything simple and makes it all extremely easy. You’ll also find all the latest juicy news, gorgeous recipes, inspirational stories and articles, plus plenty more to help motivate you to discover a new you in ’22! Help me to spread the word about Juiced! magazine as it’s FREE for anyone to download on Apple or Issuu. You can also get a FREE ‘real’ copy when you order a juice plan from juicemasterdelivered.com, if you grab a juicer or blender from juicemaster.com or visit a Juice Master retreat – book your stay at juicemasterretreats.com Don’t forget you can find me on social media with regular updates on Instagram and Facebook, so keep in touch in 2022! Dial back diabetes with soup-and-shakes diet, says study More than a third of people with Type-2 diabetes can reverse it with a ‘soup-and-shakes’ diet, a new study has confirmed. Research by University College London and Aston University published in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics found that the meal replacements were the most effective way to put the condition into remission – 36 per cent of those who switched to a soup-and-shakes alternative experienced a significant weight loss of 22-33lbs, a change which could bring about Type-2 diabetes remission. Jason's 28-day challenge

It’s the untold story behind his ground-breaking Super Juice Me! health documentary, and a prelude to Super Juice Me! 2 – turn the page to read about Jason’s 28-Day Juice Challenge…

JUICED magazine 11

Jason's 28-day challenge

to come to see your kids grow up. He said that he would spend a month at Juicy Oasis, but asked if I would do 28 days of juicing with him.

HE’S KNOWN AS THE JUICE MASTER AND HAS BEEN ON A MISSION TO JUICE THE WORLD FOR OVER 20 YEARS, BUT AS 2021 DREW TO A CLOSE, AND AFTER ALMOST TWO YEARS OF THE WORLD BEING THROWN INTO CHAOS BY THE PANDEMIC, JASON DECIDED IT WAS TIME TO ‘SUPER JUICE’ HIMSELF

T

he 28-Day Juice Challenge is a plan which has changed numerous lives and was born from Jason’s Big Juice Experiment which formed the storyline of his groundbreaking documentary Super Juice Me! In the film, eight people living with chronic lifestyle diseases travelled to Juicy Oasis at Jason’s invitation to commit to a month of juice and exercise to see whether this simple formula could indeed transform their health. Curiously, it was a similar health challenge which prompted Jason to commit to a 28-Day Juice Challenge for a second time at the end of 2021, resulting in the creation of what he describes as, “an accidental short film”, Super Juice Me! 11/2, as he explains. “A friend of mine was struggling with his

12 www.juicemaster.com

weight, diabetes and other health concerns and said he was going to get a gastric sleeve. I said don’t do it, as it’s a major procedure and irreversible, but his wife and doctor were for it. “What he didn’t realise though was that in order to have gastric sleeve surgery, you are put on a severe liquid diet before the operation. The Hippocratic Oath which doctors take is explicit in saying, ‘First, do no harm’, and I said if you’ve got to live on a liquid diet for a month, why not come to Juicy Oasis and try juicing. "My friend is incredibly busy with his businesses and family, and he didn’t want to miss his kids’ sports activities at the weekends which are hugely important to him, but I said surely it’s worth sacrificing four weeks’ sports events now to ensure you're around for many years

“I also felt the need to refocus my own health. During the lockdowns, at times I went from being super-good to thinking, ‘Fu** it!’, and consequently I wasn’t in the best place. We've all grown up in a world where you can achieve anything you want to if you put your mind to it – Napoleon Hill said, ‘Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve’ – but that was taken away from us overnight by the global response to the pandemic and I lost purpose. Over the past two years, just like many people, I have gone through stages of being highly motivated to feeling stagnant and uninspired, and during the last lockdown I gained 12lbs, which is quite a chunk for me! “However, I said if I was going to do the 28-Day Juice Challenge again, I wanted to super-size myself as an experiment. I actually did the same for the original Super Juice Me!, as I thought it would be good to be part of the documentary too, but the stories of the other eight participants were so good that my account got left out of the final edit and the footage was lost over the years. This time, in the run-up to taking the 28-Day Juice Challenge, I ate incredibly poorly and didn’t exercise, which was more of a challenge, as it's my drug of choice.

“I thought it would be interesting to document someone in the health industry and also how it would affect me in my 50s, to see how quickly you can gain and lose weight at this stage of life. What I soon realised was that I don’t have any muscle memory, but I have a really good fat memory! I spent a month feeding myself every type of potato – chips, crisps – plus plenty of wine and no exercise. “On the last day I ate 6,000 calories and, while it might sound brilliant, I felt absolutely awful. My skin was dreadful and felt leathery and it was nothing to do with

being in the sun – it’s unsurprising as the skin is the body’s biggest organ and our ‘shop window’ of health. The expression, ‘I don’t feel right in my own skin’, sums it up perfectly and when I posted a video on Instagram explaining that I was super-sizing myself in preparation for the experiment, someone commented, ‘You look haggard’. It made me consider how horrible people can be on social media – I was doing this as an experiment, but some people deal with this experience every day and I wonder if we shouldn't call it 'unsocial media' instead.

“The connection between body and mind is well documented and, after eating and drinking this way, my digestive system was overloaded. Anyone who suffers from bowel or intestinal tract issues will know how awful it feels when your stomach is distended and rock hard. You can’t eat, but feel hungry. I felt, bunged up and in need of a good colonic – we all know how 'going' makes you feel so much better both physically and mentally! “At the back of my mind, I knew my friend was in trouble and needed to do something drastic

which gave me the incentive to commit to 28 days of pure juice. “Although I anticipated experiencing the usual ‘withdrawals’ after a month of junk, the first two weeks were a breeze – I needed my ‘skin’ back and this overrode any addiction to the food I had been eating. My immune system was weak and its ability to fight off anything was low, so for the first two weeks I took a couple of friendlybacteria supplements. The difference, once I started on the juice, was genuinely like night and day and I felt incredible.”

“ALTHOUGH I ANTICIPATED EXPERIENCING THE USUAL ‘WITHDRAWALS’ AFTER A MONTH OF JUNK, THE FIRST TWO WEEKS WERE A BREEZE”

JUICED magazine 13

In addition to the physical transformation Jason underwent from taking his own 28-Day Juice Challenge, the experience also helped him to fall back in love with juicing again. It might sound strange as he’s known around the world as the Juice Master, but Jason says that he had almost become fatigued by the subject which he has now become synonymous with. “Even if you love chocolate, if you’re working in a chocolate factory every day you become sick of it in the end,” says Jason. “At the start of my own juice journey I had a list of diseases and plenty of incentive to see if this simple, natural approach could transform my health. Based on my own experience, I wanted to juice the world, and over the last 20 years I have been contacted by literally thousands of people who want to share their stories of how juice has

healed them, I’d almost become immune to it and had forgotten how good you feel after 28 days of juice. “It reignited my passion for juicing and I’m going to do at least a 21-Day Juice Challenge every year, as a reset ahead of the festivities. No matter how successful you are, life comes along and slaps you in the face at least every three weeks, so it’s still a challenge, even for me, after all these years. “I'll admit I was tempted during the 28 days. I’d headed back to Spain to see Katie and JJ, and they were eating their wood-fired pizzas, there was a lot going on, and in my head I thought, ‘Fu** it!’ – you start talking yourself into breaking the habit and I had a wobble, but Katie said to me, “If you do, you’ll hate yourself”, so I didn’t and I woke up the next morning and felt great.”

your juices and blends are freshly made for you and there is a full programme of activities to support your detox, makes it a lot easier, but, just like anyone, Jason says staying on track was tough at times. “In some ways it’s easier at Juicy Oasis, but in other ways it’s like groundhog day as there’s a monotony of doing the same thing. As I always tell people to do, I reverted back to why I was doing it in the first place and reminded myself that it’s shortterm pain for long-term pleasure – it’s just 28 days in your whole life and, whether you are 10,

12 or 20 days out, you’ll regret not continuing to the end of your challenge. Although my friend is a very private man, the change in him was monumental and, for me too, 28 days of juice was an incredible achievement.” Want to know how Jason’s 28-Day Challenge turned out? Turn to page 20.

Some might think being at Juicy Oasis, where

“IT REIGNITED MY PASSION FOR JUICING AND I'M GOING TO DO AT LEAST A 21-DAY CHALLENGE EVERY YEAR”

14 www.juicemaster.com

Jason's 28-day challenge

#1 PLAN It’s been 12 years since the original Super Juice Me! documentary was filmed and first screened at Leicester Square’s first orange-carpeted première, but what is it that makes the 28day plan stand the test of time? “Following the huge success of my 7lbs in 7 Days book, I received an avalanche of testimonials from thousands of people saying how juice had improved everything from gout to arthritis and diabetes,” says Jason. “It got me thinking that if seven days improved health conditions, what would 28 days do and it gave me the idea for the big juice experiment. However, I had to build a retreat first, which took some time, but we invited eight people with 28 diseases to Juicy Oasis and the results of the Big Juice Experiment were ridiculously good! The film was a huge success and Richard Branson put it on all Virgin flights. “There are always juicy naysayers out there, but the truth is it works and I constantly receive messages from people saying how much Super Juice Me! has helped them. In the film, one of the participants, Roger, was living with lupus and sleep apnoea and his marriage was in crisis, but since the 28-day detox he hasn’t needed any medication and ran a half marathon two months after leaving the retreat. “I’m a big believer in one disease, one solution and for many lifestyle diseases good nutrition can be life-changing. If you change the terrain where the germ bathes, you change everything – the word ‘dis-ease’ literally means discomfort in the body and surely if you alter your lifestyle it will help remove that

infl ammation. “Although the 28-day diet is intended to be a one-size-fits-all plan, I would always say allow for a ten per cent element of change – you may need another juice, to add some electrolytes or feel the need to chew something occasionally. You’ve got to be intuitive rather than following the plan blindly. I know some people who feel that having a Hunger SOS is a failing, but if you need one and it helps to cement your resolve, it’s clearly better to have it! There were a couple of nights when I was on the 28-Day Juice Challenge that I would have a big slice of avocado with pesto and black pepper to save my sanity.

invite 70 people with a range of conditions including diabetes, high blood pressure, rheumatoid arthritis and asthma as our guests. They will sign a contract with us and we will pay for them to stay at the retreat for a month and track their results to see how their health improves. I believe this will be a big enough experiment to silence the juicy naysayers, once and for all, and hopefully the medical profession will finally pay attention to the health benefits of juicing.”

“Once Juicy Escape is built, we will film Super Juice Me! 2 and JUICED magazine 15

My Super Juice Me! journey starts TODAY! Yes, the day I have been looking forward to, and dreading a little, has finally arrived. Well, I say dreading, but it’s a huge relief to be able to get something healthy back in and start exercising again. For those following, you’ll know I’m shooting a small bite-sized documentary for YouTube titled, Super

“IT’S INCREDIBLE JUST HOW QUICKLY A RELATIVELY HEALTHY BODY CAN CHANGE FOR THE WORSE IF YOU THROW ENOUGH JUNK AT IT”

16 www.juicemaster.com

Juice Me! 11/2, with the subtitle, A Taste Of My Own Medicine. Before the start of filming today, I have spent the last five weeks eating and drinking crap, whilst at the same time doing very little exercise. I wanted to effectively super-size myself before ‘super juicing’ myself. Well, mission accomplished! I am unsure how much I stacked on (weights

and measurements are being filmed in the next hour), but mentally and physically I feel like I’ve been run over by a truck. It’s incredible just how quickly a relatively healthy body can change for the worse if you throw enough junk at it. It also shows just how detrimental these ‘substances’ are. It will also be interesting to see just how quickly

the body heals too, which is what the mini doc is mainly about. I see I have MANY people joining me for the journey. If that’s you – let’s do this! Remember it’s only 28 days and the rewards are genuinely off the scale. Right, time to see just how much I’ve stacked on over the past 5-6 weeks!...

Total Baber! With his boyish good looks and super-fit physique, chef Chris Baber is a hot new talent who’s ready to take his place as the nation’s freshest kitchen inspo

Juicy interview

C

hris Baber may not quite yet be a household name, but chances are you’ll recognise him from Marks & Spencer’s TV commercials where he cooks up the UK’s best seasonal ingredients into mouthwatering dishes that instantly make you want to eat better. Introducing him to our screens, it’s all part of the Michelin-trained chef’s mission to make cooking easy with his delicious, fuss-free recipes and, as he’s been creating magic in the kitchen since the age of eight as the Baber family’s head cook, at 30 he’s got a fair few dishes to share.

Chris with Lucy Verasamy, co-star of Marks & Spencer’s food advertising campaigns

Many of these appear in Chris’ brand new cookbook, Easy, which is set to be published in April, and the title is fitting given his rise to stardom appears effortless. The truth is, of course, it’s taken plenty of hard work to follow his dream to make food his world. Growing up in Hexham, Northumberland, Chris combined his passion for cooking with a love of running, which led to an early foray into modelling. However, a winning appearance on BBC One’s cooking show, Yes, Chef, in 2016 teamed Chris with Michelinstarred chef and restaurant owner Atul Kochhar who invited him to train in his kitchen. Moving to London, the young protégé immersed himself in the experience of working in a busy restaurant, but it was the growing attention and engagement of his social media audience which inspired Chris to forge his own path. “My big opportunity came from Atul who invited me to

work in his restaurant,” he says. ”I had never really travelled, never been to university, never lived away from home, but my passion has always been food, so it almost felt like I had to do it. After six months working with him in a Michelin-starred restaurant, I realised that my passion is inspiring people to cook. I missed the feedback from Instagram of people saying, ‘We made curry for our kids and they ate all their veg!’ “I left the restaurant, but knew I needed to stay in London and for the first few years living without an income wasn’t the easiest. A few nice people along the way have believed in me and gave me some great opportunities, so when I began working with Marks & Spencer a couple of years ago it was brilliant to have an outlet to share my passion for home cooking and things have just evolved from there really.”

Easy Prawn Paella with Garlic Mayo My easy prawn paella is a fuss-free, one-pan wonder – so much flavour with very little effort. That’s what onepan cooking is all about. The garlic mayo is dead simple and really sets it off!

1. Mix together the mayo, grated garlic and a squeeze of lemon juice and set aside. 2. Heat the oil in a large, non-stick frying pan over a medium heat. 3. Fry the chorizo, onion, pepper and garlic with a pinch of salt and pepper for 5 minutes until the onion has softened and the oils have been released from the chorizo. 4. Stir in the rice and paprika and cook for a couple of minutes, coating each grain of rice in the oil. 5. Add the stock, increase the heat and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat to medium-low, cover loosely and simmer for about 15 minutes, stirring now and again. If it becomes very dry, add a splash of water. 6. Stir in the prawns and peas and cook for 5 minutes or until the prawns are pink. Stir in the parsley and lemon juice. 7. Serve with a wedge of lemon and dollop of garlic mayo.

1. Heat a large, non-stick frying pan over a medium heat. Add the pine nuts and toast for about a minute, stirring constantly, until lightly golden. Remove and set aside. 2. Put the pan back over the heat and turn it up to high. Add the olive oil and butter. Add the mushrooms, season and fry for 5–8 minutes until softened and most of the moisture has evaporated. 3. Fill a large saucepan with boiling water from the kettle to cook the pasta later. 4. When the mushrooms are soft, add the garlic and thyme. Fry for a further 3 minutes, then add the stock and simmer for 1 minute. Turn the heat down to low and stir in the crème fraîche. 5. Cook the pasta in the boiling water for 3 minutes. Drain, saving half a mug of the pasta cooking water. 6. Add the pasta to the sauce along with half the Parmesan. Add a little of the pasta cooking water to loosen the sauce if needed. Toss together to coat the pasta in the sauce. 7. Divide between serving dishes. Scatter with the toasted pine nuts and remaining Parmesan. Serve with ground black pepper.

Ultimate Chocolate Chip Cookies

1. Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan. 2. Line two baking trays with baking paper. 3. Melt the butter in a saucepan or in a heatproof bowl in the microwave. 4. Put both sugars into a mixing bowl, pour in the melted butter and beat with a wooden spoon for 5–8 minutes until lighter in colour with a slightly fluffy texture. 5. Add the egg and vanilla and mix until combined. 6. Add the flour and salt and mix until a dough just forms, then stir in the chocolate. Transfer to the fridge to chill for 30 minutes. 7. Divide the dough into 10–12 balls, depending on how big you want your cookies, and place them on the prepared baking trays, leaving a few inches of space between each one as they will spread during cooking. 8. Press each ball down with your fingers to flatten slightly. 9. Bake for 10–11 minutes until slightly golden – they will still be soft when they come out of the oven. Leave to cool on the trays for 30 minutes before serving.

For me, the perfect cookie has to have a crisp, crunchy edge with a soft, chewy, melting chocolate middle and that is what we have right here

Hot, hot, hot! That was the tabloid press’s reaction to the steamy shots that TV’s Carol Vorderman shared on Instagram during a lateSeptember stay at Juicy Oasis. Carol, who turned 61 at the end of last year, looks INCREDIBLE in the snaps from her juicy getaway where she enjoyed a week of juice, yoga and fitness to detox and drop a few pounds. Carol, who was our celebrity interview last issue, spoke of her venture to reset her biological age, devoting a year to her health with a daily regime of lengthy walks, weightlifting and paddleboarding sessions to build her strength. She also talked about her love of Jason, saying, “He never fails to make me laugh, I adore him. He’s as adventurous and mischievous as I am,

Having taken part in Jason’s Virtual Retreat during lockdown at the start of 2021, Carol was overdue a stay at Juicy Oasis, which she has visited many times, and checked in for a week’s break ahead of a busy month as host of the Pride of Britain Awards. Posting a string of steamy shots to Instagram as she enjoyed the retreat’s hot tub and a midnight swim, Carol also shared a video of a cryotherapy session which she described as ‘three minutes for healing and health’. The deep freeze helps to boost metabolic rate as temperatures drop to -200° – after a single session the body can burn around 400-700 calories as it uses energy to heat back up. Feeling fabulous at the end of the week, Carol posted, "A week of just fresh juices, LOADS of walking, a few sweaty gym sessions, massages, swimming in the moonlight, saunas, stretching out, salt baths, cryotherapy, NO MAKE UP (bliss) and otherwise hanging around in a dressing gown and bikini… oh and HOT TUBS. Yessssssssss… will be back soon.” Can't wait to see you again, Carol. ●

The great

juicing

A nutritional power-punch start to the day or a warm, comforting bowl of nourishment – what’s your style to get your daily fruit and veggies?

The arguments for a glorious glass of freshly extracted juice are pretty irrefutable – a hit of vitamins and minerals, a boost of energy, reduced infl ammation, not to mention the benefits of weight loss associated with a juice detox plan. Who wouldn’t want to start their day with a juice or blend that ensures you fuel your body with the good stuff ? Juicing is the fastest way to get nutrition into your body and an easy method to up your veggie intake. Juicing also protects heat-sensitive nutrients which can be destroyed when vegetables are cooked and provides a plethora of alkaline-rich nutrition which is the perfect antidote to a modern, acidic diet.

Breath of Fresh Air! Never has a name better described a juice. The cool tones of mint offset by the warmth of spicy ginger, zesty orange and the allimportant ‘King Carrot’, all work beautifully together to create a real statement juice with such depth and vigour you’ll be refreshed, energised and ready for whatever the rest of the day has in store! Sweet Potato, Beetroot & Ginger Soup Red onion 1 small Sweet potato 1 medium Beetroot (raw) 1 medium bulb Ginger 2cm chunk Olive oil 1 tbsp Boiling water 500ml/18 fl oz Himalayan rock salt 1 pinch Ground black pepper 1 good pinch

Warm, satisfying and packed with nutrients, a soup cleanse, aka souping, is a delicious and easily digestible way to get your RDA of veggies. A big batchcooking session can ensure your fridge and freezer are stashed with ready-to-go soups that are perfect when you're hungry and tempted by lownutrient, quick-fix food choices. Like a hug from the inside, described in Ayurveda as ‘Agni, a stoking of your digestive fire', souping is economical, sustainable and fibrepacked to support the detoxification process.

1. Peel and dice the onion and sweet potato. Remove the top and any hard skin from the beetroot and chop into small chunks. Peel and chop the ginger into small pieces. 2. Heat the olive oil in a pan over a medium heat, then add the red onion, sweet potato and beetroot, cover with a lid and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the ginger and boiling water, reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes. 3. Remove from the heat, season and blend. If using a regular blender, cover the lid with a tea towel and hold down firmly as steam creates pressure which can blow the lid off. Serve with a swirl of almond milk.

education Imagine sending your child to school at four and not seeing them for 12 years – an award-winning documentary tells the story of the children of the Higher Himalayas whose parents make this sacrifice Any parent will tell you they would do anything for their child and want to give them the best start, but ask if they could send their off spring away to school at four years old and not see them again for 12 years and most would be aghast. This is a stark reality for families in the Higher Himalayas of Nepal who believe it will give a child the best chance in life. Here, parents send their children to the capital city of Kathmandu to a school run by a Buddhist monk, in the hope that an education will set them up for life. For ten years, the children do not see or speak to their parents, due to the remoteness of their home villages which require an arduous trek to return. It is only

upon graduation at 16 that the children can make the journey across mountains and rough terrain, back to an environment untouched by the modern world – there are no mobile phones or social media. Directed by Zara Balfour and Marcus Stephenson, Children Of The Snow Land follows three students as they leave the Snowland School to make the epic journey home after more than a decade apart from their families. The children question whether their parents loved them and why they were separated at such a young age. An incredibly moving and humbling story, the film explains the quandary these parents face and how the young

children are forced to become independent at such a tender age. The documentary is fascinating and, having created it, Zara set up a non-profit organisation, Snowland Journeys, to help the young people and communities featured in the film for the long term. The organisation takes the school’s young graduates back to their homeland to enable them to understand why their family sent them away and to see how deeply they are loved.

The trips are financed by trekkers who participate in the expeditions to this remote and stunning region with Snowland Journeys and then, once the children return to the capital, the charity supports them as they begin their young adult lives. If you are looking for an inspiring and insightful movie, Children Of The Snow Land is available to watch online at snowlandjourneys.com

How

COVID killed healthy common sense The pandemic has turned the logical approach to health on its head with devastating consequences. Have we lost track of common sense in blindly following the ‘COVID rules’, asks Jason Vale?

Jason on COVID

I

think it's safe to say that nearly two years of lockdown after lockdown has had a negative impact, for most, on our health and weight. Gyms, parks and leisure centres were forced to close while fastfood outlets such as McDonald’s, Burger King and Pizza Hut were allowed to open. The madness of it all is hard to wrap your head around. It’s been reported that the average person has gained 10lbs during the ‘health’ crisis, and many a great deal more. The incredible irony is that governments around the world had a golden opportunity to hit a global health reset button and address the real reason why so many people have been taken down by the virus. The elephant in the room that no politician, health professional or influential person has been willing to talk about is that 78 per cent of those who have required medical intervention or sadly died from COVID were overweight or obese. Numerous studies have repeatedly shown that obesity – which brings with it many lifestyle diseases such as heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes, to name just a few,

64 www.juicemaster.com

seems to be a major factor with which COVID affects different people. The shocking truth when you think about it is that if you remove that statistic, then there is no pandemic! Much has been reported about the impact of COVID on the economy, employment and education, but for two whole years not one health minister has mentioned health in their response to the pandemic. ‘Jason, what are you talking about?’, I hear you say, but those who are responsible for ensuring the NHS is protected and patients receive the appropriate care and treatment have missed the point entirely. We should call them ‘disease ministers’ instead as they are completely focused on managing disease rather than preventing and addressing a critical health issue that would go a long way to averting the pandemic. Neither a single politician nor any of the Government’s senior medical advisers have focused on how we can help ourselves reduce our risk of getting seriously ill with COVID. Even with a clear link between obesity, hospitalisation, death and COVID, I would never dream of mandating a person's BMI, or what they eat or drink.

“The elephant in the room that no politician, health professional or influential person has been willing to talk about is that 78 per cent of those who have required medical intervention or sadly died from COVID were overweight or obese”

JUICED magazine 65

Jason on COVID

I would, of course, run the biggest health camp the country has ever seen to show how there's a huge part we can play to give ourselves a fighting chance. However, it appears the Government has no problem with issuing mandates, just not of the BMI or salad kind! No, the solution, we are told, is vaccination.

This isn't an argument about whether someone should or shouldn't be vaccinated. I have and always will champion personal choice regarding our bodies. If you choose to have a vaccination, that's your decision or if you choose not to, that's your choice too. Yet we are creating a two-tier society where the vaccinated are free,

Freedom of choice

“Why not take a radical approach and look at a person’s body-fat percentage as a starting point to tackle the current health crisis? Can you imagine the outcry if we suggested making weight a prerequisite to personal freedom”

Around the world, people are instructed that their civil liberties must be impinged if they do not comply with having at least two doses of vaccine plus, it would now appear, endless boosters for years to come. No vaccine? Can’t travel internationally, go to concerts or work in a care home or the NHS in the UK, and in some countries they are even making it illegal not to be vaccinated.

and those who exercise freedom of choice are penalised and made into social pariahs. Think about it another way, if someone is morbidly obese with

asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritis, they smoke and drink heavily, and they stand next to a 28-yearold unvaccinated footballer who is in peak physical condition with optimal muscle and body mass index (BMI). If the morbidly obese individual is double vaccinated, the Government tells us the 28-year-old footballer

is more dangerous to society. That’s bonkers, at any level! Equally illogical is that people believe someone in a white coat who stands up and says a

drug which has been developed in less than a year is perfectly safe for ANYONE, including kids, to be injected with. Yet if someone challenges this thinking or voices an opinion which questions their authority, they are immediately slammed as a conspiracy theorist. Now, when I was a teenager if you took drugs at a nightclub you got kicked out, but now you have to take them to get in! Considering that under normal circumstances a vaccine can take up to 15 years to develop and even then usually comes with a compendium of side-effects, it seems strange that the COVID vaccine is seemingly a ‘miracle cure’. The NHS website states: ‘The COVID-19 vaccines approved for use in the UK have met strict standards of safety, quality and effectiveness. They can cause some side-effects, but not everyone gets them. Any side-effects are usually mild and should not last longer than a week, such as a sore arm from the injection, feeling tired, a headache, feeling achy, feeling or being sick. More serious sideeffects, such as allergic reactions or blood clotting, are very rare’.

The Netflix effect

Now, I know this might be controversial, but why not take a radical approach and look at a person’s body-fat percentage as a starting point to tackle the current health crisis? 66 www.juicemaster.com

Jason on COVID

Can you imagine the outcry if we suggested making weight a prerequisite to personal freedom – ‘outrageous’, I can hear them chime. We’ve had restrictions for more than 22 months now and during that time there have been long periods when gyms, parks and health retreats – including Juicy Oasis and Juicy Mountain – have been forced to close. This has undoubtedly impacted many people’s physical AND mental health with devastating consequences. By contrast, the Government permitted major chains to deliver junk food by the bucketload during lockdowns and enable the newly ‘housebound’ to put their feet up and tuck in as they bingewatched the latest instalment on Netflix. The net effect – or shall we call it the ‘Netflix effect’? – is we’ve ended up with a much sicker society where people have a weaker immune system, ironically at precisely the moment that it needs to cope with this never-ending, mutating virus. I don’t believe for one second that the Government would mandate a person’s BMI or weight as a pre-requisite of freedom, but equally we can’t mandate that people must take a drug to be allowed to live without restrictions. Now is a pivotal moment where we have the chance to put health at the top of the agenda

and do what it would truly take to protect the NHS. It's not like they don't have the money after all, as the UK Government spent £37bn on a failed NHS Test and Trace App. Just think how much free fruit and vegetables we could have delivered to households around the country for that amount of money? Along with a loss of personal freedom which those who choose not to be vaccinated are now subject to, anyone who speaks out against the ‘regime’ is silenced and we’re seemingly not allowed an open debate about the best way to navigate ourselves out of the pandemic. At briefing after briefing,

we are told that the science must lead us, but the latest research shows us yet again that obesity is a major factor in fighting the virus (read more on page 70).

concerns me is that freedom of choice seems to have gone out of the window and there’s now a climate of fear which seeks to divide and conquer.

Never-ending story

Call me cynical, but politicians tend to do well in wartime and the current ‘war’ on the virus shows no sign of slowing or stopping any time soon. There are many ‘experts’ who are in demand for their scientific knowledge and medical advice, and the perpetual media focus on COVID means we are in danger of never moving forwards.

I often talk about the control Big Pharma has on so much of the medical industry, but over the past two years it has tightened its grip on the health system and Pharmageddon has well and truly arrived with Pfizer and AstraZeneca the kingpins in this neverending story. You could argue that the vaccines have given us options, but what

If the current climate of fear continues, I can honestly foresee a time when we end

JUICED magazine 69

Jason on COVID

up locking up healthy, unvaccinated people, ‘For the greater good’.

everyone has to be jabbed when there is a chance they could die?

I mean, if we’re really worried about the nation’s health, why not ban smoking? The reality is, just like the old Yes Minister sketch, there’s all that lost revenue from taxation to consider. I do wonder if those profiting from the vaccine programme

As I write, the media is reporting the case of an Italian man who turned up for his vaccination with a fake, silicone arm because he had been suspended from his job as he had not been jabbed. How have we got to a point where a person is so petrified

"In my experience, the majority of people are choosing the vaccine in exchange for their freedom, rather than a genuine fear of the disease. I hope common sense is soon restored and we can start to address global obesity" have a vested interest in leading the cry for endless jabs? Whatever your view, surely we should be entitled to make a personal choice – get vaccinated, get healthy or get both! It’s still possible to get COVID, pass it on and even die from the virus when you are vaccinated, and, even if it is a small number, some have died from the side-effects of the vaccine, so how can you mandate that

to make a personal decision that they risk prosecution for going against the ‘rules’? In my experience, the majority of people are choosing the vaccine in exchange for their freedom, rather than a genuine fear of the disease. I hope common sense is soon restored and we can start to address global obesity – the unspoken issue surrounding COVID – and get our health back on track.

Scientists discover fat is key factor in fighting COVID-19 New research by the Stanford University School of Medicine may explain why people who are overweight and obese are at a higher risk of severe illness and death from COVID. Published in October, the study shows that coronavirus infects fat cells and immune cells within body fat, causing an immune response that may contribute to overweight people experiencing the disease more severely. Once considered inert, scientists have established that body fat is biologically active, producing hormones and immune-system proteins that act on other cells, promoting low-grade infl ammation, even without infection. Coronavirus appears to evade the body fat’s immune defences, which are incapable of fi ghting it effectively, and in obese patients fat can be the dominant organ in the body. Scientists have speculated that infected fat may even contribute to ‘long COVID’ where fatigue and symptoms continue for weeks or months after the initial infection. “The more fat mass, and in particular visceral fat mass, the worse your infl ammatory response,” says Dr McLaughlin, one of the study’s lead authors.

THE GOOD GUYS Just three days – that’s all it takes for a juice diet to switch our gut from inflammatory to good bacteria and kick-start nature’s healing process

JUICED magazine 73

mind, body and spirit

Gut feeling is an expression we use to describe how our body instinctively reacts to a situation, but think a little more deeply about why our gastrointestinal tract is important and you’ll discover it contains trillions of microbes, a careful balance of healthy bacteria and immune cells which help our bodies to function effectively

Scientists have nicknamed the gut as our ‘second brain’, a mass of neural tissue filled with neurotransmitters that do far more than the important function of digesting what we eat. Directly connected to the brain in our skull, the gut partly determines our mental state – research shows that 95 per cent of the body’s serotonin, the ‘happy hormone’ which affects mood and sleep, is found in our bowel which could explain why our wellbeing is often affected by how efficiently our digestive system is functioning. Until birth and during breastfeeding, the balance of our gut flora is determined by our mother, but thereafter lifestyle factors such as diet, stress, sleep and antibiotics can disrupt its healthy function. Constipation, diarrhoea, bloating or stomach cramps can be signs of an unhealthy gut and lead to chronic conditions such as Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Studies show that gut health plays a key role in our immune system with many autoimmune diseases, including multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, linked to the microorganisms that exist in our digestive tract.

Juice boost

While increasing our daily intake of fruit and vegetables generally is a fantastic way to improve our diet, evidence shows that a pure-juice plan can have a hugely positive effect in as few as three days. A small 2017 study of 20 people which investigated the effects of a short juice plan concluded that, along with significant weight loss which lasted for up to two weeks, a boost in vegetables and fruit improved participants’ gut microbes, strengthening their digestion and immune systems.

74 www.juicemaster.com

The study’s researchers stated that vegetable and fruit juices provide polyphenols, fibre and nitrates which have a prebiotic-like effect, writing, ‘In summary, a threeday juice-based diet altered the intestinal microbiota associated with weight loss, increase in the vasodilator nitric oxide and decrease in lipid oxidation'. A juice plan results in a cascade of health benefits throughout the body, opening up blood vessels, delivering more oxygen to muscles and allowing us to recover from exercise. Within just 72 hours, the gut switches from infl ammatory to good bacteria, training the body to start the process of weight loss and reset itself. Dark leafy greens, beets and other strongly pigmented vegetables particularly boost the detox process, adding fibre and nutrients to the body, and metabolising meat and dairy in the gut. Diversity matters too as there are almost 100 types of fibre and thousands of plant phytochemicals which feed different bacteria, so small switches such as choosing a rainbow of coloured peppers, or switching up the type of berries you add to your yoghurt or porridge can help to create a healthy gut microbiome and achieve equilibrium. Whether it’s a three-day kickstart or a longer-term plan, Jason has developed his nutritionally balanced juice diets to ensure that they maximise the health benefits of a pure-plant programme. From a quick boost or a regular juice that ensures you get nutrients into your body every day, make a glass of fruit and veggie goodness a gut instinct!

4 steps to gut health 1. Eat a varied diet 2. Add a daily probiotic 3. Manage stress 4. Improve your sleep

PRE, PRO, POST… Confused by guthealth supplements? Here’s all you need to know about supporting your juice plan with biotics Try Juice Master’s Biotic Blend, a probiotic formula of friendly bacteria that contains live soil-based organisms ORDER NOW AT JUICEMASTER.COM

PROBIOTICS are live bacteria and yeasts that promote a healthy balance of gut bacteria. Three leading probiotics – lactobacillus, bifidobacterium and saccharomyces boulardii – have been extensively researched and are believed to benefit the digestive system. In essence, they are a microorganism which helps build good bacteria, fight bad bacteria and boost defences. Along with supplements, you can find probiotics in naturally fermented food such as yoghurt, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi and pickled vegetables. PREBIOTICS are non-digestible ingredients which act as food for the probiotics and stimulate healthy bacteria in the gut. Available as a supplement, you can also find them in green leafy vegetables, bananas, whole grains, onions and garlic. POSTBIOTICS refer to the waste left behind after your body digests both prebiotics and probiotics – think of them as gut super warriors! In addition to supporting our digestive and immune systems, they may help to lower blood sugar, prevent obesity and reduce infl ammation. Again, increasing your intake of fermented food will boost your body’s postbiotic levels. Signs that your body might need a little extra help with a biotic supplement include digestion irregularities, a slow metabolism, sugar cravings or skin rashes including eczema and psoriasis. It’s common to experience gas, bloating or diarrhoea when you start taking probiotics as our gut microbiome adjusts, but this should settle within a few days or weeks.

BOXER BEAT

Gloves at the ready! Lose fat and build muscle and stamina with boxing – here’s all you need to know to punch up your workout

Hands up who’s bored with their regular HIIT class? Step forward boxing which offers the same intensive cardiovascular and strengthbuilding workout. Pretty much a two-for-one exercise, boxing also improves balance, coordination, agility and reactions. While it’s easy to think it’s all about swinging killer punches, your legs and torso do as much work and, as you complete a routine, you’ll also work your core, back and shoulders, achieving a full body workout. Boxing is also a heavyweight fat burner, burning 13 calories per minute, making it as effective as running and cycling – on average, 30 minutes of punching a bag will burn around 200 calories. An unexpected benefit is that boxing is also a great stress-reliever and, as you throw your jabs, your body will release endorphins, making you feel happier. Whether you spar with a partner using pads or a pair of gloves, use a hanging or floor-weighted punchbag, or simply practise your jabs in the air, a boxing workout will boost your fitness level as you complete swings and kicks. And, if you don’t have gloves, try shadow boxing and use light dumbbells to complete your jabs and crosses. Combine moves with squats, lunges and mountain climbers for a breathtaking workout. There are plenty of online classes or look for a local gym that offers an introduction to boxing with a qualified instructor to help you channel your inner Muhammad Ali and learn to, “Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee!”

What to wear

THE BLUE CORNER…

A high-intensity activity, a sports bra is an essential for women. Layer up with a vest and sweatshirt that are easy to pull off as you warm up. Shorts or leggings allow you to move easily, but ensure they're a good fit as it’s tricky to adjust when your hands are in gloves.

TWINKLE TOES

While some advocate bare feet, a good pair of trainers works well. However, for a pro performance, avoid heavily cushioned running shoes and lace up a pair of fl at-soled boots with ankle support that enable you to stay on the balls of your feet.

Premier match Whether you’re a rookie on the ropes or a heavyweight with a strong right hook, Jason’s brand-new retreat Juicy Escape will be the perfect place to don a pair of gloves and try your hand at boxing. The luxury sports facilities will include a full-size ring which you can throw your hat into and then beat your opponent to the punch! Of course, all matches will be just for fun and a great way to let off steam while you enjoy all that the health resort has to offer.

IT’S A WRAP

Boxers’ hands are carefully wrapped before being laced into gloves, and you can buy a pair of wraps which will help to absorb sweat. While most classes will supply gloves, if you enjoy boxing regularly, it’s an idea to buy your own for under £50.

Zest for life

Winter’s bright, zingy stars, oranges are the perfect pick-me-up, so put the squeeze on this fab fruit

Oranges are clearly not the only fruit, but boy do they pack a punch in nutritional value and lip-smacking, thirst-quenching flavour, plus they get full marks for their highly portable, nature-packed, pocket-worthy shape. Originally cultivated in China, oranges are a cross between a mandarin and pomelo and were later grown in India, the Middle East and Europe. Christopher Columbus is said to have taken the first orange to the Americas and today Florida, along with Spain, have become the orange capitals of the world. The fruit's name is said to derive from the Old French word orange, which itself borrows from the Arabic naranj, and King Louis XIV was said to be a huge fan of it. A favourite of the citrus family, winter is peak season to enjoy this fruit and, rather conveniently, it is loaded with vitamin C which is believed to help ward off the common cold. Vitamin C is also a trooper in maintaining healthy skin, eye health, blood vessels, bones and cartilage and, although most of us get enough from our daily diet, a deficiency of this vitamin can lead to scurvy. We need around 40mg of vitamin C each day and the average orange delivers 53.2mg so make it one of your Five-A-Day! Along with vitamins A and B, calcium and potassium,

the colourful fruit has anti-inflammatory, antiviral and antimicrobial benefits. Oranges also contain powerful flavonoids hesperidin and naringenin, which help to protect the body against heart disease and cancer. Hesperidin may lower high blood pressure and cholesterol, while naringenin is found to have a bio-active effect as an antioxidant, free radical scavenger, anti-inflammatory and immune-system modulator. A research study of almost 70,000 women over 14 years by Norwich Medical School found that daily consumption of oranges or grapefruits, either as a whole fruit or juice, helped to lower the risk of an ischaemic stroke. A separate study found that those who had a stroke had depleted levels of vitamin C, while those who had not experienced a stroke had normal levels. Oranges are also a solid source of fibre and a single fruit contains 12 per cent of your recommended daily allowance, helping you to feel fuller for longer and support weight loss. Although the oils in orange skin are better and indigestible, the pith is where most of the fruit’s nutrients are found. Including as much of the white stuff as possible will make your juice creamier and healthier, so don’t peel it off when you are prepping a juice or blend! •
