Juicy greetings Welcome to a new year, my juicy friends, and the first issue of Juiced! magazine in 2021. I guess the only way to start my Ed’s letter is, ‘Well thank f**k that’s over!’ I am, of course, talking about 2020, a year that goes down in history for all the wrong reasons. There was one good thing to come out of it though, and that is it has certainly made more people take a long hard look at their own health and what they can do to protect themselves from things like COVID-19. In this issue, I focus on my new campaign for 2021 which is, Ask Not What The NHS Can Do For You, But What You Can Do For The NHS. I have not only written an article explaining how you can and should get involved, but I also shot a video on my YouTube channel. To say I am passionate about this campaign and the approach taken by the vast majority of governments to tackle COVID-19 is an understatement. Those who follow my social media channels will already have a rough idea of my thoughts on this subject, and those who visited my retreat after the first lockdown was lifted definitely know my viewpoint. One thing for sure is that we all need to play our part if we are to protect ourselves and the NHS, now and in the future. That’s why my campaign is a call to arms to take our health in our own hands. In this issue, you’ll also find some brand new blend recipes from my latest book, Juice & Blend, gorgeous healthy food ideas, inspirational stories, interesting articles as well as the latest juicy news about myself and the Juice Master team. Please spread the word about Juiced! magazine as it’s FREE for anyone to download on Apple or Issuu. You can get a FREE printed copy too with an order from Juice Master Delivered, if you order a Juice Master juicer or blender from juicemaster.com or if you visit a Juice Master retreat. Don’t forget, you can follow my campaign on my social media channels, Instagram (@jasonvale) and Facebook (facebook.com/juicemasterltd) – I deleted my Twitter account during the first lockdown as it got so vile, and you won’t find me on TikTok, because I’m not 12! Stay happy and healthy, and may the juice be with you!

JASON ON… THE NHS
f
i rst of all, please make sure either before or after you read this, you jump onto my YouTube channel, JuiceTube, and watch my Ask Not What The NHS Can Do For You, But What YOU Can Do For The NHS video. It is much easier, for me anyway, to get my point and passion across on a video than through the written word. Having said that, I hope both come across clearly in this article.
Welcome to COVID Crazy Town! I have been in the health and wellness industry for over 25 years and, in that time, I have seen some truly insane things from those who are deemed to be ‘health professionals’ and ‘scientists’. I have also seen what amounts to blatant lies by governments surrounding this subject. However, I have never witnessed the scale of insanity and lies from the ‘experts’ and governments as those in evidence in 2020. I think it’s fair to say that when ‘scientists’ start advising the public not to play board games at Christmas because of COVID-19, you know that science has well and truly gone on holiday. Just because something is said by a scientist, the government or
50 www.juicemaster.com 12
health professionals doesn’t mean it’s always true. Much of the time ‘scientific facts’ are no more than scientific hypothesis, which often comes back to bite them. Well, actually it never does. That’s the beauty of being a scientist. Years later, if what you hypothesised about turns out to be completely wrong, you have the neat little getout clause of, ‘What we didn’t know back then was… but what we now know is…’ Some of the ‘science’ during 2020 surrounding COVID-19 was laughable at best and dangerous at worst. Sadly, it was the latter for many and I’m unsure their usual get-out clause line will be swallowed in a few years when the true stats and facts come out. I say that, but they have managed to convince a significant amount of people that COVID-19 somehow
knows what time it is, how many people you’re with, whether you’re stood up or sitting down, if you’re on a plane and also if you’re eating a ‘substantial meal’ or a bowl of chips. To be honest, this utter ‘pseudo-science’, at best, list goes on and on and I will be doing a separate video entitled, Welcome to COVID Crazy Town soon, but if I can try and find anything good about the COVID crazy year, it was that I can now finally start the conversation around doing what we can to genuinely help the NHS.
Time to stop clapping and start getting some fruit and veg in us! In the height of lockdown in the UK, we saw millions of people coming out of their homes every Thursdaynight to ‘clap for key workers’ – mainly, it’s fair to say, people were clapping those who work in the NHS. There were some people who even filmed themselves clapping the NHS and then posted that on Instagram, presumably to show the world what a nice person they are, that they are indeed clapping for the NHS and doing their part. The Thursday-night clap was well-meant, clearly, but a) we should have been doing this long before 2020 as the NHS is overwhelmed every year and b) it doesn’t actually do anything to help the NHS.
The truth is you can throw all the money in the world at the NHS (and boy, oh boy, we do, but more on that later!) but it will – as has been proved – do little to stop it being overwhelmed. The only way to stop the NHS being overwhelmed is if we do what we can to try and make sure we don’t need their services.
Your health in your hands What you may or may not be aware of is that according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) 85 per cent of lifestyle diseases are caused by what we do, or often don’t do, like eating more vegetables and exercising. This means we do indeed have the power to put our own health into our own hands and help to ease the growing burden on the NHS. Let me be clear here, before the usual social media keyboard warriors start ranting, I am not saying even if you do all the right things when it comes to health and lifestyle that you won’t ever get an ailment or disease. Disease, as we know, is often brutal and indiscriminate, but what I am saying is if you regularly exercise, cut out a lot of the junk and get more fruits and vegetables in yourself, there is no question you’ll give yourself a much better fighting chance. You’ll also, again, without question need the services of the
NHS a great deal less – which is the very point of this campaign. The fact is the NHS is overwhelmed and has been for some time and will be forever unless we start taking some responsibility for our health and doing something about the situation. We also shouldn’t expect everything to be the NHS’s problem. I strongly believe many things that are currently available on the NHS shouldn’t be and if we removed them it would also do a lot to ease the burden on this much-loved and globally respected institution. We are rightly protective of the NHS, one of the few, totally publicly funded, need-based healthcare services in the world that looks after us from cradle to grave. However, surely we have to accept that this wonderful institution is not serving in the same way that it was intended when it was formed in 1948, when the motivation was to provide good, strong and reliable healthcare for all. Today, we are using the NHS for a myriad of services which could not even have been imagined by the postwar government which created it. The first patient to be treated on 5 July 1948 was Sylvia Beckingham, aged 13, who was admitted for a liver condition. In the modern age, the NHS is as likely to be treating obesity – the biggest health crisis facing
our and subsequent generations – or paying for someone’s breast job. I’ll address obesity operations and diet pills later, but my point, as I will repeat throughout this article, is that we need to stop having everything on the NHS and use it for its original purpose. It simply cannot do this if we aren’t doing what we can to help our own health and we continue to demand everything currently available on the NHS.
Save a penny, take a penny In 1948, the NHS had a total budget of £280m in the UK, which was a phenomenal figure for that time. The forecast budget for 2020/21 is £129.9bn and yet, even without the current pandemic, following every budget announcement there are cries from officials that it’s not enough
to deliver the health services we have come to expect from the NHS. The NHS is the world’s fifth-largest employer, sitting just behind the US Department of Defense, China's People’s Liberation Army, Walmart and McDonald’s, with 1.5m employees. In 2017, the workforce comprised 419,019 nurses, 58,875 consultants, 31,395 GPs and 248,886 admin and management staff. Now, I don’t claim to understand the complexities of running a public service, but that sounds like an awful lot of clipboards compared with someone I’d be glad to see in a medical emergency.
We need to stop having everything on the NHS and use it for its original purpose
Leaving this thorny issue aside, in my opinion there’s plenty we can personally do to play our part in reducing the demands placed on the NHS, and the first is surely a matter of common courtesy. In 2018-2019, of the 123,351,435
13
The stats on people actually dying from COVID-19 who weren’t overweight, had underlying health conditions or were under 75 are extremely low
50 www.juicemaster.com 14
hospital outpatient appointments made, 7,919,660 were DNA (did not attend). At an average cost of £120-£160 per appointment, this adds up to almost £1bn, equivalent to 257,000 hip replacements. Doctors’ surgeries don’t fare much better and in January 2019, the NHS reported more than 15m GP appointments are missed each year at an average charge of £30, putting the total cost at £450m. To get that into perspective, the cost of those wasted sessions could pay for 8,424 more full-time nurses, 224,640 cataract operations, 58,320
hip replacements and 216,000 drug-treatment courses for Alzheimer’s.
It’s just plain, common sense Thankfully, someone with a modicum of common sense took the decision to ban doctors from prescribing overthe-counter remedies such as paracetamol and cough mixture in 2018, a practice which was previously costing the NHS £100m a year. These medicines are freely available and cost pennies to buy, far less than the £9.15 price of a prescription, but surely there is more to be done
in reducing unnecessary waste in the NHS? Despite being told not to, in 2019 GPs wrote £46,000 of homeopathic prescriptions for therapies which have been shown to have no real effect and are blacklisted by the NHS. Prescriptions for nicotine dependence cost the NHS £23,253,612 in 2018. As a former heavy smoker and someone who has studied addiction for over 25 years, I know first-hand how hard it can be to quit if you are going about it in the wrong way, and I also know that giving nicotine (in patches, gums or any other
JASON ON… THE NHS
you’re having nicotinereplacement therapy, so therefore you aren’t buying cigarettes at the time and can therefore afford the ‘therapy’. Personally, as I know from experience, you don’t need these aids – they actually prolong the process and many get addicted to them instead of the cigarettes. It can be easy to stop smoking if you understand the nature of the nicotine trap. Check out my Stop Smoking In 2 Hours plan on page 28.
A big fat problem
nicotine delivery device) to people trying to get off the drug isn’t the best way forward. I also know that even if people think I am wrong and that nicotine patches, gums and the like are the answer and really do help, why on earth is the NHS paying for them? If a smoker can afford to smoke, they can also afford to pay for them. Again, in case any social media keyboard warriors start saying things like, ‘Jason, these people need help to quit and if the NHS can help, they should’. All very fine and noble, but you don’t smoke while
Then we have the not-so-delicate issue of treating obesity. In 2019, NHS data revealed that 29 per cent of adults are classified as obese and a further 36 per cent are overweight - that means a whopping 65 per cent of the population could do with losing weight to improve their health. Even more shockingly, just the year before, the National Audit Office reported that 9.7 per cent of 4-5-year-olds and 20.2 per cent of 10-11-year-olds were obese. How have we got to a stage where children are obese before they even reach their teenage years? The truth is parents are killing their kids with poor nutrition choices, maybe not right now, but certainly in the future – studies show that obesity can reduce your life expectancy by 20 years.
The government estimates the cost of obesity to the NHS is £6.1bn and £27bn to wider society, and the NHS reports that 355,000 items were prescribed for the treatment of obesity in primary care in 2019, at a net cost of £10.4m. We know obesity is a major factor in many lifestyle diseases including type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease and stroke. Diabetes alone is estimated to cost onetenth of NHS overall health spending and it is estimated 4.7m people in the UK have diabetes, 90 per cent of these type 2. Obesity is responsible for 80-85 per cent of someone’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes and more than 500 people each week die prematurely from the condition. Again, worryingly, in February 2020, NHS figures recorded that 2m people in England, including 115,000 younger people, are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes, exacerbating a spiralling situation. In comparison, 7.4 million people in the UK are living with heart and circulatory diseases. The British Heart Foundation (BHF) reports 27 per cent of all deaths in the UK are related to heart or circulatory disease. It is also worth considering that studies show you are ten times more likely to die with COVID-19 if you are significantly overweight or obese.
One cardiologist I know, Dr Aseem Malhotra, was shouting from the rooftops during the pandemic that most deaths from COVID-19 were ultimately down to diet-related issues. The stats on people actually dying from COVID-19 who weren’t overweight, had underlying health conditions or were under 75 are, in fact, extremely low. This is not about fatshaming, but we’ve clearly got a growing issue (no pun intended) on our hands, so how do we tackle obesity? The NHS’s approach historically has been cure rather than prevention. In its longterm plan, the NHS recognises that GPs receive only eight hours’ training on nutrition during eight years of medical training, yet there are no plans to remedy this situation and focus on getting people to eat healthily. Instead, clinically obese patients are offered Orlistat, sold overthe-counter as Alli, a drug that works by preventing your body absorbing a third of the fat you eat, which is instead passed with faeces. Should the drugs fail, you may be considered for bariatric surgery, with a range of surgical procedures including gastric band, gastric bypass, gastric balloon and sleeve gastrectomy, all of which reduce the size of your stomach to help you eat less. In November 2020, the National Institute for Health and Care
15
JASON ON… THE NHS
Excellence even published an evidencebased recommendation for swallowable balloon capsules for weight loss in adults. Welcome, again, to Crazy Town!
Cut it out! Bariatric surgery is usually only available on the NHS to treat people with severe obesity with a BMI of 40 or more, or with one of 35-40 if they have a serious health condition such as type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure that could be improved with weight loss. Bariatric surgery costs between £4,000 – £10,000, and in 2018/19 there were 7,011 hospital admissions for it at an estimated cost of £28m-£70m. The NHS picks up the tab for the vast majority of bariatric procedures and, in 2019, 4,509 (74.7 per cent) of ops were undertaken at an estimated cost of £18m-£45m. While the majority of these procedures are performed on people aged 35-64, in 2015 it was reported that a 13-year-old boy had become the youngestever person to receive gastric-band surgery on the NHS – yes, really, 13 YEARS OLD! This is blatant child abuse and an act of criminality, in my opinion. There will be some who will say that his parents or guardians are responsible for allowing him to become obese at such a young age. There are many
50 www.juicemaster.com 16
complexities to this which would involve a separate argument so I will not join in the parent-bashing here. What I will say is that it is wrong and indeed criminal to surgically remove part of a 13-year-old’s stomach. The Government forced everyone to be effectively on house arrest in 2020 and prevented them, by law, from seeing their own friends and family and even from attending the funerals of loved ones. However, they cannot find a way to ensure this young boy and other children whose
health are at risk change their diet and start to exercise? Instead, it is felt that the only answer is to remove part of a teenager’s stomach? If that seems like madness, how about the NHS’s latest ‘remedy’ for addressing the growing obesity bill? In September 2020, following trials, the NHS launched a soup and shake weight loss plan to tackle type 2 diabetes for 5,000 patients in ten areas. The year-long plan provides ‘total dietreplacement products’ for three months, alongside support to increase exercise levels.
Subsequently, patients will be offered managed plans to reintroduce solid, nutritious food with ongoing support from clinicians and coaches. The cost of the plan has not been revealed. On the one hand, I find it crazy that ‘packets of powders’ are being prescribed by the NHS. However, it at least means that medical professionals might start focusing on nutrition rather than Big Pharma’s medicines or surgical procedures to ‘fix’ obesity. There are welcome signs that a new generation of GPs
are open to prescribing lifestyle changes instead of simply scribbling a 'script' for the next impossible wonder-cure. It is also interesting to observe that on the one hand medical professionals attack my ‘liquid only’ fruit and vegetable juice plans, yet here they are using a similar method themselves. Well, when I say similar method, they are prescribing highly processed ‘powdered shakes’, not a patch on the genuine live juices and blends I have promoted for health over two decades. It is also interesting
to observe that they recommend their liquidonly regime for three whole months, and yet have gone bananas at me for many years over my one-week juice plan!
Mind matters It’s not just the phenomenal cost of treating obesity which concerns me, it’s also how effective these treatments actually are. A study by the University of Michigan between 2006-2013 revealed that one in five – 20 per cent – of lap-
band surgeries require a second procedure, while gastric-bypass and gastric-sleeve procedures have a 3-9 per cent re-op rate. The long-term effectiveness of bariatric surgery is also questionable. A 2015 study examining laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy concluded that, despite a ‘honeymoon period’, after five years, nearly half of patients experienced significant weight gain. In 443 patients, while excess weight loss was at 77 per cent after a year this decreased to 56 per cent five years later, and diabetes remission shrunk from 51 per cent to 20 per cent over the same period. A smaller Brazilian study of 782 patients showed that 63 per cent regained weight within two years of their operation. Having worked as an addictions specialist for many years, I fully understand that weight loss is about what’s going on in our mind as much as what we put into our mouths. Often there are issues we need to deal with before we can make long-term positive changes and lead a healthy lifestyle. Research by the University of Pittsburgh in 2019 concluded that gastric-bypass patients are three times more likely than the general population to die of drug- or alcohol-related causes. Separately, a Canadian study of 8,815 adults over three years showed that self-harm emergencies
increased by 50 per cent after bariatric surgery, prompting calls for increased suicide screening and mental-health support. And a Swedish study, published in January 2020, concluded that adolescents who undergo bariatric surgery continue to experience mentalhealth problems five years after their surgery, despite achieving weight loss. It may sound harsh, but why are we spending £18m-£45m a year of the NHS' funds on a procedure which doesn’t exactly work in fixing obesity?
“Lockdown will ultimately cause more deaths than the virus itself” I made this statement at the very start of the UK’s decision to lockdown. I was totally against it and knew that the impact on the economy and people’s wellbeing would be far worse than doing what we can to protect the vulnerable and cracking on. It was never a case of lives vs the economy, it was always lives vs lives. Everyone knows that the more people who are unemployed, the worse the economy is, the more deaths there are. Here’s just one example of one life that never made the news, and there are thousands more like it. I was being
17
picked up by the driver we always use when travelling to and from Juicy Oasis, and he told me a story that shook me to my very core. The week before he had dropped me at the airport and said his friend was really struggling during the pandemic on every level, as his business had been decimated due to the decisions the Government had imposed. As we started the trip back to the retreat a week later, I asked him, ‘How is your friend?’ He started to look teary-eyed and then replied, ‘He bought a gun and shot his brains out’.
The UK endured two lockdowns in 2020 in a bid to ‘protect the NHS’ from being overwhelmed by COVID-19. The impact of this to many businesses and their employees has been catastrophic. BP, Boeing, Marks & Spencer, Shell, Virgin Atlantic and Whitbread are among the many UK employers axing tens of thousands of jobs, and in October 2020 the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported that 64 per cent of businesses were at risk of insolvency.
Let’s start with looking at the finances, which the Office for Budget Responsibility has estimated will cost the UK an eyewatering £394bn in borrowing between April 2020April 2021.
It is also highly debatable that lockdown actually did anything to curb the spread of the virus, despite the rhetoric. The ‘curve’ had already started to come down before the first lockdown came in and we need to remember that correlation doesn’t mean causation. The best analogy I heard in regard to this was the following: A person goes to see their doctor with chickenpox. The doctor says I know how to treat this – I need to cut one of your legs off. The doctor proceeds and cuts the leg off. The patient comes back a few weeks later and the chickenpox has completely gone away. The patient says, “Thank you doctor, it worked!”
Alongside this vast debt, which will take decades to repay, the economy is predicted to shrink by 11.3 per cent, the largest decline in 300 years. Unemployment is also expected to surge to 2.6m (7.5 per cent) by mid-2021.
While it is incredibly debatable that lockdown, as well as all the other often non-scientific – make it up as you go along – restrictions that went on and continue to, make a difference, it isn’t debatable that
This is just one story out of millions around the world and the true cost to lives and the economy will not be realised for many years to come, but we are already starting to get some idea.

these things have potentially devastating effects on other areas of the population's mental and physical health.
per cent year-on-year. At the same time, the ONS reported that one in five adults were likely to be experiencing some form of depression during the pandemic.
Long-term prognosis
Separately, in October 2020, a NHS Digital survey reported there has been a rise in mental-health problems among children and young people during the pandemic too. Data reveals that one in six children and young people had a probable mental-health disorder in July during the first wave, compared to one in nine in 2017. The social and economic effects of mental-health problems are already spiralling and the legacy of COVID-19 may impact on future generations long after the virus has been got under control.
In July 2020, The Lancet published a study into the impact of lockdown on cancer screening and the effect of delays in diagnosis for cancer patients. It concluded: ‘We estimate that changes in healthseeking behaviour and the availability of and access to essential diagnostic services resulting from national pandemic measures will result in a large number of additional deaths from breast, colorectal, lung and oesophageal cancer in the medium (one year) and longer term (five years).’ The nation’s mentalhealth is suffering too and rates of severe depression in adults doubled during the pandemic, rising to 19.2 per cent in June 2020, up from 9.7 per cent between July 2019 and March 2020. In November 2020, the NHS launched a campaign to encourage people with mentalhealth issues, including panic attacks, social anxiety, OCD and PTSD, to seek help after referrals fell during the COVID-19 crisis. In April 2020, there were only 57,815 referrals compared with 133,191 in April 2019. Figures for July 2020 improved but were still down 11
While experts have warned against creating a self-fulfilling prophecy, the long-term effect on suicide rates is an area of concern, and in Japan statistics show that suicide claimed more lives in October 2020 alone than COVID-19 had since the start of 2020. Shockingly, figures from the ONS show a seven per cent spike in domestic abuse, accounting for one in five crimes with twice as many women killed by men in the first few weeks of lockdown, while Ofsted reported a 20 per cent rise in the number of babies being killed or harmed during the first lockdown. These are hugely worrying trends with devastating effects.
JASON ON… THE NHS
Your country needs you! Whatever your view on each of these issues, I think I can vouch for all of us when I say we want the NHS to not just survive but thrive. This is where you come in. It is time that we all do what we can to step up to the health plate and start taking personal responsibility for our own health. This doesn’t mean not having the odd tipple or a little junk from time to time – we are all human, after all, and should remain so. It simply means making sure that we up our intake of fruits and vegetables and move our bodies more often. These actions will do way more to actually protect the NHS than standing on a doorstep and clapping. We need to go way beyond virtue signalling on social media and genuinely raise our health game as a nation. The BHF states that only a quarter of UK adults and one in six children in England and Scotland consume the recommended five portions of fruit or vegetables each day. The BHF also notes that more than 37 per cent of the UK adult population does not achieve the recommended level of 150 minutes of physical activity each week. It says that by being more active we could reduce our risk of developing heart or circulatory disease by as much as 35 per cent. That's not an insignificant figure!
A 2014 UK study published in the British Medical Journal states that those who eat seven or more portions of fruit and vegetables a day have a 33 per cent reduced risk of dying prematurely, compared to those who eat less than one portion a day. And if you want to take things a step further, a study by Oxford Martin School researchers into the future of food found that adopting a vegan diet globally by 2050 could prevent 8.1m deaths a year. There is no medical drug on earth which can deliver these type of results and the evidence is compelling – in a world where statistics seem to govern our every action, I think it’s worth investing our efforts into simply eating more plants and being more active each day to improve our health and wellbeing. We can all, if we are committed, do more on the personal health front and small changes can make a big difference – especially to the NHS. Surely it makes total sense to give yourself a fighting chance to beat this virus and any other health threat which might come along. As I said at the outset, ask not what the NHS can do for you, but what can YOU do for the NHS. NOW is the moment to make a change – eat well, drink well, move well and think well. It’s our collective duty to take action and save the NHS! •

JASON'S NHS CHALLENGE
Hi guys, I hope you’ve heard about my mission to encourage people to take responsibility for their own health and help save the NHS – turn to page 10 to read my personal essay on what I believe we can all do to make a difference, which goes way beyond clapping and banging a saucepan on a Thursday evening. I may be known as the Juice Master, but over 25 years I have examined and explored every aspect of nutrition to develop well-balanced, effective plans incorporating juices, blends and clean-eating food – whichever Juice Master plan you choose, you can achieve incredible results and make life-changing improvements to your diet and wellbeing. We can all improve our nutrition and activity levels, and whatever your current stage of health, now is the moment to step up. Come on, let’s make 2021 the year we each do OUR bit and reduce pressure on the NHS.
healthily afterwards with Jason’s Nourish plan – delicious readymade meals which use recipes from his Super fast Food cookbook. It’s a go-to for maintaining a long-term, healthy diet that works.
Move well! A week at Jason's retreats combines premium nutrition with seven days of activity, from daily walks and fitness classes, to yoga and meditation. How we move our bodies impacts our health and mental wellbeing, and is a core component in Jason's Law of 4 to get us in our best health. Turn to page 58 for ideas to boost your activity levels at home.
Think well!
Eat well… drink well… just juice! “‘Why juice?’ is one of the questions I am most frequently asked,” says Jason. “After all, we could simply eat the vegetables and fruit to get the same result, but the reality is we just don’t! Most people are overfed and undernourished, and juicing is an incredibly easy way to get the nutrients our body needs to function effectively.
50 www.juicemaster.com 22
“Numerous studies prove that eating ten or more vegetables and fruits each day helps to reduce our risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer and stroke. The easiest way to boost your fruit and veg intake? Two or three delicious, freshly made juices and blends which max your veggie and fruit intake.” Whether you juice solidly for a week or a month with one of Jason’s plans shown on page 26, it’s easy to continue eating
Mindset is a major factor in ensuring you stick with a new healthyeating plan, but we’re not talking about willpower, something Jason says is NOT the magic ingredient to break bad habits. Before he found fame as the Juice Master, Jason worked as an addictions specialist, helping people to break the repeat behaviour cycle to quit smoking, alcohol and junk food. Understanding addiction is a central plank written into each of Jason’s books and apps, and his allimportant coaching
videos show people how to overcome addictive behaviours which can hijack our best-laid plans to eat healthily. “Junk food is bad for you. Fruit and veg are good for you. That should be it, it should be easy,” says Jason, “but addiction is not easy. Addiction transcends logic and intellect and junk food is designed to ensure you are left feeling less satisfied and hungry, so you go back for more.” The psychology behind successful weight loss lies in shifting your mindset to put you in control of what you choose to eat. “When people are on a detox, they’ll say they want to eat,” says Jason, “but my response is always the same – either have it and shut up, or don’t have it and shut up, but shut up! "There’s no point moping around for something you hope you won’t have! What are you really missing out on? If you commit to seven days of a carefully planned juice programme, chances are you will go from sceptic to believer.”

JASON'S NHS CHALLENGE
Kay took Jason’s lockdown challenge and transformed her mind, body and outlook on life...
‘I
started my first juice challenge on 1 May 2020 after being in lockdown on my own, losing my job and feeling as if my life was on the edge. Reaching nearly 294lbs, my mental-health was at an all-time low and my physical health was suffering (not that it had ever really been the best). 'Something just snapped and I decided I had to fight back. I have no real stats as in measurements, as the only one I have ever known has been the scales. To be honest, when I started this, as with so many things relating to my diet, I believed that I would fail. Don’t get me wrong, I watched all the videos with all the goodwill, was pumped and enthusiastic and raring to go, but in my head I still believed I would fail, but then something clicked. ‘I got to a milestone birthday, blew out the candles, watched my family eat cake (in the back garden, socially distancing, may I add), sipped water out of a Champagne glass and was extremely happy and content thinking, 'I got this, I don't need food and drink to celebrate’.
24 www.juicemaster.com
I felt healthier, not starving and for a very long time, as long as I can remember, happy.
of times a week, just cut that out. So out came the credit card and I bought my first juicer.
'Previously, my weight was up and down and I had a toxic relationship with food. This was dictating my life, ruining relationships and sinking me deeper and deeper into depression. I literally couldn't just go out for a simple meal or drink at the weekend with friends or to a family gathering! I didn't know how to eat a modest meal with a glass of wine, it had to be large and dripping with fat. Forget the side salad, I wanted fries, mac and cheese, plus it's cheaper to get a bottle rather than two glasses!
'I can honestly say the first couple of weeks for me were hard and I just slept. I literally only got up to do my juice, I was a bag of emotions, not too sure if it was the detoxing, everything that was going on in the world or a bit of both, but after two weeks I started to feel alive, living and so much happier.
'I missed out on so many events because of this as I had to have at least seven days' notice so I could plan another toxic diet, searching frantically on Google how to lose a stone in a week or doing my alltime favourite, waterfasting, sometimes for weeks upon weeks. I started to faint, I was one hell of a moody cow, such a horrid person (my emotions were all over the place) and I wasn't able to concentrate when I was at university. 'Then I discovered Jason Vale when my best friend added me to a juicing group and I was advised to try his apps out. I researched and came up with every excuse. First it was, 'I've lost my job, so how can I afford a juicer?’ Then I was like, 'Kay, you're buying alcohol a couple
‘I'm now down to 200lbs, and I started at 291lbs. I've realised that it's not about being Miss Slim, it's about being healthy and happy! I still have unhealthy feelings and thoughts around food sometimes, but I'm in a much better place than I was seven months ago and so much happier. Hey, all of my adult life I had trained myself this way, so I'm content in knowing that I still have a fair way to go. 'I tend to juice at least five days a week and, although not always organic, it's got to be a lot better than the motorway servicestation fry-up I used to shove down my throat at 6am every morning. 'I now exercise at least three times a week. I get out of breath quickly, but before I was doing absolutely nothing! Rome wasn't built in a day as the saying goes. This is certainly a journey and one that I'm absolutely loving, exploring and finding myself again after years of being
lost, not living and just existing. 'So many of my family and friends have started juicing too – everyone loves you, Jason! I even got my parents a juicer for their anniversary – health is wealth and I'm so glad I have come to realise that now. 'I no longer want to be skinny, just healthy so that I can live for longer and share many wonderful memories on this earth. Life's too short as it is. 'I love my new energy, I have clear thoughts and the positive mindset that juicing has brought me. Again, Jason, thank you so much for helping me and so many others to discover this and one day I will meet you and be at your juicy resort… I've put it out there to the universe. ‘Take care my fellow juicers, much love and God bless, Kay xxx’

‘As a nurse in the NHS Trust during these very challenging and crazy times, I have a busy life. For many years I have tried to follow all kinds of diets to help me lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Everything failed and I lost hope. My cousin mentioned her juicing detox a few times, but it seemed a bit unrealistic. One day she made me watch Jason Vale’s 28-Day Super Juice Me! documentary and afterwards I understood what she was doing. I am now on day 14 and have never felt so good. I have lost weight in such a beautiful way, I can see it in many different parts of my body. My skin is radiant and has a healthy glow, I sleep so much better and have more energy. I am determined to continue for 28 days. This has been a life-changing experience and I am proud of myself for getting so far. I started at 141lbs and after 14 days I’m 130lbs, losing 11lbs.’

here’s no doubt, smoking is one of the toughest addictions to conquer and while some can throw away their last packet of cigarettes and never look back, for the majority of people, smoking is an unshakeable habit with deadly consequences. Most smokers rue the day they first lit up, but COVID-19 has created an even bigger impetus to quit – data from the ZOE COVID Symptom Tracker app has suggested that smokers are 14 per cent more likely than non-smokers to develop the main symptoms of the illness – fever, persistent coughing and shortness of breath. The app, created by Guy’s and St Thomas’ and King’s College hospitals in London captured data from more than 2.4m people and found smokers with a positive COVID-19 test were twice as likely to be hospitalised with the disease.
Whatever your motive for packing up for good, Jason Vale’s Stop Smoking in 2-Hours is an incredible tool to help you break the habit and free yourself from the ‘nicotine trap’. Jason was a heavy smoker for many years but transformed his lifestyle and later became an addictions specialist, helping people to quit smoking, alcohol and junk food. He developed his plan to help thousands to remove the need for nicotine, the craving which fuels smokers’ addiction. Unlike patches and gum, Jason’s approach frees the mind of the desire to smoke, removing the need for willpower to quit. “It involves understanding how the nicotine trap works and combining that knowledge with some basic instructions,” says Jason. “The need for nicotine is caused only by the previous dose – it’s a simple chain that you CAN break.”
FIVE STARS ALL THE WAY ★★★★★ ‘Excellent support and methods had me stop smoking in just two hours,’ Melvin Diaz ★★★★★ ‘Never did I imagine that I could feel this good, so quickly. I’m on day five and I feel amazing, I have had no desire to smoke,’ Deb Harris ★★★★★ ‘This app has enabled me to give up so easily. A big thumbs-up, I highly recommend to anyone who wants to ditch tobacco,’ Linda Smith ★★★★★ ‘I listened to the audio and right after I broke all my cigarettes in half and I haven't looked back. IT’S MAGIC! While Jason’s Stop Smoking in 2-Hours was available for free for many years, it now costs £4.99, with all profits going to the Juice Master’s Create Magic Fund. Launched in 2019, the fund was developed following the publication of Jason’s book, Create Magic, which explains the philosophy his mother ingrained in him, to always spread happiness by your actions. The Create Magic Fund has already paid for gifts of Jason’s Juice Master Delivered plans and trips to his retreats Juicy Oasis and Juicy Mountain for well-deserving people.
“Research shows we are more likely to succeed in quitting when we invest financially in ourselves, even at a small price,” says Jason. “So we have introduced a low cost – less than half the cost of a packet of cigarettes – to incentivise people to commit to a life-changing moment. “If you’ve ever wanted to be rid of this habit, as I once did, this plan has the potential to help you succeed, once and for all. Now’s the time – don’t just do it for yourself, do it for your family, friends and the many people who the Create Magic Fund will help too!”

REAL LIFE JUICERS
THE MAGIC OF JUICY OASIS Whether you are embarking on a healthy lifestyle change or celebrating success, Jason’s Portuguese luxury retreat is a special place where amazing things happen. Meet two special guests whose stories show the magic of Juicy Oasis
Losing an incredible 146lbs, Helena is pictured, left, during her first stay at Juicy Oasis in 2018 and, right, on her third visit in 2020, when she caught up with Jason – she even bought the same swimsuit in a smaller size to mark the occasion
50 www.juicemaster.com 38
A new year often prompts us to think about our health, but the decision to ditch the bad habits impacting our wellbeing can come at any time. For Helena Sharpe, a trip to Juicy Oasis in May 2018 was a key moment in her journey to transform her health and get the life she really wanted. “A friend suggested we go to Juicy Oasis and I wanted to make a change so I said yes,” says Helena. “Weight loss was front of mind and I remember thinking I would be 40 in 2020, but didn’t want to be
out of breath when I ran up the stairs. I’d tried many diets including Slimming World, Weight Watchers, the Cambridge Weight Plan and LighterLife® – I always lost and gained weight but could never find a happy balance. “I lost weight that week at Juicy Oasis, but when I came back I didn’t change anything straight away. Later that year, I moved house and joined a local gym. As part of the membership, I got access to a PT, Adil (@adilzulkahari), and he played a significant part in turning things around.
LOVING LIFE TO THE FULL!

– you’re focused, your skin is glowing and hair and nails are strong. On that second trip, other guests couldn’t believe I had lost 28lbs and even now, after shedding a further 118lbs, people are shocked when I tell them. With such a significant weight loss, I was worried about loose skin, but one of the best things you can do is weight training which has made all the difference for me. I’m not saying there aren’t wobbly bits, but I feel comfortable in my body.”
REMOVING BARRIERS
TOUGH TALKING
“By January 2019, I weighed 265lbs, the heaviest I’d ever been. During a session with Adil, he asked if I was serious about making a change. I started to work out with him three times a week and once by myself, and monitor calories sticking to a fresh, low-carb diet. Adil kept me on track with a monthly weigh-in, with no excuses. In the first month, I dropped 18lbs which spurred me on with weight training and HIIT sessions.
Before, Helena's social life used to revolve around eating and drinking, but now she loves to work out and the results are self-evident

“I decided to book a second trip to Juicy Oasis in March 2019 and by then I had lost a couple of stone. It’s such a beautiful place and after a week of juicing and talking about nutrition you can really see and feel the difference in yourself
Helena returned to Juicy Oasis for a third stay in October 2020, and shed a further 13lbs during the trip to reach 119lbs – an incredible 146lbs weight loss over two years. “I was a size 22 and I’m now a 10, so it’s been quite a big change,” says Helena modestly. “I’d got stuck in a rut. I’ve always had a busy social life, but previously everything centred around food, eating and drinking too much. I have a busy job which involves travelling and stays in hotels so it always seemed difficult to eat well. “I used to think these things were barriers, but now I realise they’re not. I’ve managed to find a balance – I make sure the hotel where I stay has a gym or pool to exercise in, and order things from the menu but make healthier food choices. I still have a drink occasionally with friends, but far less than I used to. “Before I started to exercise, there was a lot

of sofa time and Netflix, but now I hardly watch TV. My whole mindset has changed and I can’t imagine sitting around all weekend – I’ll go to an exercise class or for a walk and then go for lunch with friends. I have loads more energy for work and tasks – I just get things done, whereas before I would procrastinate. “I sometimes think about my first gym session when I could only hold a plank for 22 seconds and couldn’t jump, but now I can hold it for several minutes and my workouts are full of jumps and burpees.”
TAKE THE LEAP
While Helena’s achievement is the result of consistent hard work in the gym and good nutritional choices, trips to Juicy
Oasis have marked her transition. A place of self-reflection for many, has the retreat been part of her journey? “Juicy Oasis is a wonderful place,” says Helena, “and after my first trip I went by myself as I prefer it that way, you connect with so many nice people with the same mindset. I met Jason for the first time on my last visit and it was great to chat with him, he has such an infectious energy and enthusiasm – I did a rebounding class and he puts you in the mood and makes it fun. I loved jumping in the river afterwards and I can’t wait to go to Juicy Escape with its boxing ring and assault course. “I love being active at Juicy Oasis and this time I tried to throw myself into everything.
I did all the walks and it was nice to be at the front, instead of the back, worrying if there’s a hill ahead as I did on my first visit. This time I could wear a weighted vest and I enjoyed the PT sessions and yoga classes – flexibility is something I need to work on and I’ve been working on Pilates with one of Juicy Oasis’ PTs online since I got back. “While I think juicing long term doesn’t work with the volume and intensity of the training I do, since my last trip I have been thinking about blending. Juicy Oasis makes you think about nutrition and eating less processed food. I’ve been tracking calories for two years and I don’t want to be in that mode for the rest of my life so I’m now thinking ahead about how to make healthy eating a lifestyle for life. I feel so happy I’ve changed my health in a sustainable way, now it’s about maintaining it.” ●

‘JUICY OASIS WAS MY SKIN SAVIOUR’ After lockdown, Chloe Cotter booked a trip to Jason’s luxury retreat to boost her mood and skin
As Jason often says, sometimes the only way to move forwards is to retreat, and for Chloe Cotter a last-minute trip to Juicy Oasis was the perfect tonic. “I began juicing a couple of years ago and started following Jason on Instagram. His posts about Juicy Oasis look amazing and I wanted to go for a long time. “After the first lockdown, I was feeling really run down and in need of a lift. I missed the routine of getting up, going to the gym and work. As lockdown eased, I was lacking in motivation so it seemed the perfect time to visit Juicy Oasis and, just ten days before, I booked a trip. I felt so low that even if I had to quarantine, I was determined to go!
Before, Chloe was feeling low and had lost confidence after developing acne. A detox week at Juicy Oasis lifted her mood and improved the appearance of her skin

“Previously, I’ve never had a problem with my skin but over the last 18 months, I developed acne and it got so bad I didn’t want to go out, I just wanted to hide away, which is not like me at all. I spent a fortune trying acne creams, but they don’t work and I know it’s what’s going on inside that affects how you look and feel on the outside. “I was drinking loads of coffee and my diet wasn’t the best, but I strongly believe the body can heal itself through good nutrition so I was interested to see what a week of detox and juice could do. The trip was perfect and although the
first few days were slightly overcast, even that didn’t matter as it’s typically a time when you want to tuck yourself away and ease into the detox. After that it was warm and sunny in the mid-20s, and the most incredible time to enjoy all that Juicy Oasis has to offer. I used the sauna and plunge pool every morning and my skin improved so much in just a week, I was pleasantly surprised. “Juicy Oasis also gave me a much-needed reset and, after feeling stressed and anxious for so long, coming back I felt a million times better. I was motivated and ready to start afresh. My skin was improved and I felt more confident, I also felt clear-headed and was sleeping better. Now I do a juice each morning, usually a green or celery-based juice, and if I’m feeling a bit groggy I juice all day. “While I was at Juicy Oasis I also did a social media detox and didn’t look at my phone once to see what was going on back home. There’s such a chilled vibe and you can throw on a tracksuit, with no makeup, and relax without feeling like you are being judged. I would definitely go back and take my mum. You meet such a wonderful mix of people and it’s such a healing, relaxing and calm place to reconnect with yourself.”

Protein
POWER
Protein has become a nutritional superhero, but understanding and getting the most from this nutrient can be confusing. We demystify the dietary essential
A
quick scan of any supermarket’s shelves would suggest that we have become slightly obsessed with protein. Snack bars, yoghurt, even bread have been packaged up with a promise to give us a vital protein boost. But how much protein do we really need? Can we eat too much, and then there’s the
question as to whether plant-based protein is as nutritionally ‘good’ as eating meat? Protein is an essential nutrient for cell growth and repair, including skin and muscle, as it produces hormones and enzymes and provides energy. One way to think of protein is like building blocks. When we consume protein it is broken down by amino acids
which are sent by the liver to an amino-acid pool. Depending on what the body needs, it will pull on a particular sequence of blocks. When muscles are damaged through exercise, for example, the body uses blocks of protein to repair and strengthen them. When you work out, if your body has insufficient protein, it will break down existing muscle to access the nutrients it requires, hampering your efforts to build strength or lose weight.
There is evidence a highprotein diet supports weight loss as it helps satiate and keep us feeling fuller for longer
Studies show there is evidence that a highprotein diet supports weight loss as it helps satiate and keep us feeling fuller for longer, compared with eating fat or carbohydrates. We are also more likely to shed fat rather than muscle when we favour a high-protein diet.
TOO LITTLE, TOO MUCH…
Let’s start with the amount of protein we should consume each day. “We actually don’t need as much protein as we might think,” says Jason. “Breast-fed babies get more than 1,000 proteins from mother’s milk, which helps them to grow and develop in their first six months, but we never double in size again during our lifetime. As adults, we need only
INGREDIENT FOCUS
How much protein do I need? • For an average woman: your weight x 0.36 = grams of protein per day • For weight loss: your weight x 0.7 = grams of protein per day • For muscle gain: your weight x 0.8 = grams of protein per day
0.36g of protein per kg of body weight a day.” Nutritionist and TV presenter Dale Pinnock, aka The Medicinal Chef, suggests including a palm-sized serving of protein in every meal which will help you feel satiated and reduce the likelihood of snacking. Depending on our goals, to lose weight or build muscle, we can calculate this more precisely using the simple formula shown above.
BEFORE OR AFTER?
There is much debate about whether we should have a protein shake before or after a workout. Some advocate a boost
prior to exercise to help preserve muscle mass. Research by the University of Texas shows that 20g of protein before training increases anabolic

Eating too little protein is less of an issue. Skin problems such as redness and dryness, brittle hair and nails, mood swings and muscle twitching and loss may be signs you need more protein, and if you are concerned you should consult a medical professional. At the other end of the spectrum, proteinenergy malnutrition is extremely rare and usually the result of starvation, not something most of us are likely to experience in the Western world.

3 quick bites Hold the protein bar! Try these easy, grab and go protein-packed snacks instead. • Edamame 11g of protein per 100g Lightly steam and eat hot or cold. • Almonds 21g of protein per 100g Aim for a small handful of 8-10 almonds for a satiating snack which studies show can aid weight loss. • Pumpkin seeds 32g of protein per 100g Eat neat or add to a blend, pumpkin seeds help support heart health too.
(muscle growth) performance markers. Although a ‘magic 20-minute post-workout window’ may be an optimum time to eat a protein snack and rebuild muscle, other studies suggest that the effect is the same within three hours of exercise, so it really is down to your own personal preference on this one.
PLANT VS MEAT
How about the argument that we need meat to get our full quota of protein? “Protein-energy malnutrition on a plant-based diet is a bit of a myth,” says Dale. “Of course it’s perfectly possible to make nutritionally poor plantbased choices, but if you are eating a whole-food plant-based diet, you can still get 100 per cent of the amino acids the body needs. “Every time you eat, look at your plate and ask yourself where is the protein? At every meal, aim for a good-quality protein, slow-burning carbohydrates and high-fibre vegetables which will collectively provide a meal that takes a long time to digest and drip-feed your blood sugar levels. "Blood sugar control is an important factor in many metabolic diseases,
Why use a protein powder? Ensuring you get enough protein to fuel your body when you're working out can be a challenge, and that’s where a protein powder can be invaluable for muscle growth and repair. It’s also a great way to top up your intake if you haven’t got enough through diet alone as protein powder provides an isolated nutrient with 30g, equivalent to the amount of protein found in a chicken breast. It’s important to pick a quality protein powder to get the most from this supplement though. Avoid products with a lengthy ingredients list, including artificial sweeteners or those that are heavy in whey. Instead opt for a powder that is at least 70 per cent protein such as Juice Master Super Blend Me! Protein Blend – comprised of 50 per cent pea and 50 per cent hemp, it’s organic and suitable for vegans, you just need to add 1-2 tbsps to a juice, smoothie or water.

such as abdominal obesity, raised blood lipids, high blood pressure, reduced insulin sensitivity and type 2 diabetes. A protein source in each meal buffers the impact on blood sugar levels, but this can just as easily come from plant-based foods as meat.
GET CREATIVE!
There are endless ways to work protein into every meal and boost your nutrition. Start the day with a protein-packed blend recipe from Jason’s Super Blend Me! book or app. “Eat scrambled eggs, or silken tofu with a dash of turmeric, spinach and red onion for a great breakfast,” says Dale. “Have salmon and salad for lunch, and a mixed-bean chilli with a baked sweet potato and broccoli for dinner. Get creative, you don’t need to give up the things you love, just give them a tweak. Try a healthy mac ’n’ cheese using multi-grain pasta and a sauce of puréed butternut squash flavoured with nutritional yeast, or use silken tofu, thinned with lemon juice, for a delicious twist on a comfort-food classic.”

P reheat the oven to 180°C (350°F/gas mark 4). Prepare the Red Onion Marmalade. Peel the sweet potatoes and chop into small chunks. Remove the ends and skin from the onion and dice. Peel the garlic. Place the potato, onions and garlic onto a baking tray, drizzle with the oil and toss ingredients until coated. Cut the goat’s cheese into cubes. Whisk the eggs. 2. Continue with the rest of the mixture until the pan is full (this will probably be just 2 or 3 fritters). Cook for 2 minutes on one side, then turn and cook for 1-2 minutes on the other side until golden. Repeat with the rest of the oil and mixture so you end up with 4-6 fritters. 5. MIND, BODY AND SPIRIT

Let ’s get started
The NHS recommends 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week which, to save you the maths, equates to just over 20 minutes a day, plus two strengthtraining sessions each week. Heading to the gym gets us in the right frame of mind to work out but, after the first lockdown in 2020, one survey revealed that 70 per cent of gym-goers had decided not to renew their membership. If you struggle to motivate yourself to exercise at home, experts recommend four steps to finding your workout groove: •M ake a plan – lock it in to your weekly schedule. Whether you exercise first thing, during a lunch break or after work, make an unbreakable date with yourself. •M ake space – having a dedicated place at home where you can safely stretch out, jump and reach for exercise equipment keeps a focal point to do your daily workout. •M ake time – if you struggle to exercise uninterrupted (kids, pets, calls, we're talking about you...), break a 30-minute routine into three, ten-minute bursts during the day. •M ake it social – if showing up is half the battle, enlist family or friends to train alongside you, even if it’s online via FaceTime, Zoom or Skype.

Best in class
From HIIT to yoga, YouTube has a world of PTs at your fingertips. Try Joe Wicks, aka The Body Coach, for high-intensity interval training (HIIT) or unwind and stretch out over a session of yoga with Adrienne. There is plenty of instructor inspo to be found, and if you think you’re too old to move your body, check out 73-year-old Joan MacDonald for a spot of strength training. During lockdown, Peloton and Nike Training Club offered free online workouts, but many local PTs have taken classes online and some gyms are loaning equipment, so search out what’s in your community. For a fun workout, join the kids in a TikTok dance. You might feel daft, but you’ll work up a sweat as you master those moves – no lip synching required!

Leg warmers and leotards were exercise essentials when we first pressed play on Jane Fonda’s Workout, back in the early 80s. More than 17 million copies of her VHS tape have been sold worldwide, and it’s still available on Amazon Prime if you are looking for some nostalgic aerobics. Across the pond, Arlene Phillips (above), then best known as choreographer of Top of the Pops dance troupe, Hot Gossip, gave us an Anglicised version with her record/tape Keep In Shape System. TV has given us a host of exercise instructors, starting with BBC Breakfast Time’s Green Goddess Diana Moran, TV-am’s Mad Lizzie and who could forget GMTV ’s lycra-clad Mr Motivator? Throughout the 90s and noughties, a slew of soap and reality stars helped us feel the burn with their fitness DVDs, including Eastenders’ Natalie Cassidy, Loose Women’s Nadia Sawalha and former Juiced! cover star Vicky Pattison. However, when it comes to home fitness, Davina McCall goes the distance with 14 DVDs, the first released in 2004, and her wellbeing programme, Own Your Goals (ownyourgoalsdavina.com). Stay strong
Keep it simple and low-cost by using your own body weight to work out with these simple exercises that anyone can do in as little as 36 sq ft. Aim for four rounds of 45 seconds of activity for each exercise, followed by a 15-second rest for an intense workout.
SQUATS
Standing with a straight back, lower your torso keeping your knees over your toes, bringing your hips below knee height and your weight in your heels. Return slowly to standing. Add a small hand weight to intensify the exercise.
LUNGES
BURPEES
Standing straight, step forward with one leg, lowering your hips until both knees are bent at 90°. Keep your front knee above your ankle and stop your back knee touching the ground. Return to standing and switch. Use a weighted barbell to intensify.
From a standing position, drop into a squat with your hands on the ground in front of your feet. Jump your feet back with your arms extended before returning your feet to your hands and jumping fully upright to complete one move.
PUSH-UPS
On all fours, hands slightly wider than shoulders, straighten your arms and legs. Lower body until your chest nearly touches the floor. Pause and push back up.
MOUNTAIN CLIMBERS
In a press-up position, arms straight, legs extended and weight evenly distributed, bring one knee towards your chest and then return it to the starting position, alternating with the other leg.

PLANK
On hands or forearms, lift your body to form a straight line. Hold before lowering and repeating.

Everyday heroes
From everyday items to a few low-cost additions, it’s easy to equip a home gym. Use a chair to support a burst of tricep dips, a table or worktop to pump out some incline press-ups or squat against a wall while you watch the news. A broom handle can provide a makeshift barbell and water bottles serve as light weights during circuits. An exercise ball, balance board and weighted hula hoop are low-cost ways to increase the challenge. Used at Juicy Oasis, Jason swears by his Bellicon Rebounder for an incredible aerobic workout which burns 200 calories in a 30-minute session and boosts the lymphatic system. During lockdown, Hollywood legend Goldie Hawn showed off her mini-trampoline workouts and Madonna often uses a rebounder before a performance. Order a Bellicon Classic Rebounder at juicemaster.com
5
The outsiders
Research shows that exercising outside means we are more likely to keep going for longer, work harder and repeat activity more frequently. It also boosts mood, according to a study by the University of Alabama. Whether you walk, run or cycle, make getting your RDA of vitamin D a daily must-do. Download the free NHS Couch to 5k app which is brilliant for transforming your fitness if you’ve been inactive for a while. And don’t forget the simple childhood pleasure of skipping which is low-cost and provides an intensive cardio workout.
6
Stretch it out
Don’t overlook the importance of stretching as a workout. Movement coach Roger Frampton’s TEDx Talk, Why Sitting Down Destroys You, highlights how our sedentary lifestyles have impacted our strength and flexibility – The Frampton Method draws on yoga and gymnastics to improve both. Yoga is practised three times a day at Jason’s health retreats and, while improving flexibility, mobility and strength, has the added benefit of activating our parasympathetic nervous system which helps our bodies to rest and repair. Search online for the Five Tibetan Rites, a yoga routine with physical, mental and spiritual benefits, which can be completed in less than ten minutes. 61

new year new gear Put best intentions into play and upgrade your kitchen’s kit with the best investment you can make for your health
Juice Master Super Blend, beautiful blends, smoothies, soups and sorbets
It’s one of the questions Jason is most often asked – ‘What are the best blender and juicer to buy?’ Well, the answer, of course, are the ones you are going to use regularly. And that’s the point. Regularly! All too often we are tempted by the latest kitchen gadget, use it once or twice and then tuck it away at the back of a cupboard only for it to be unearthed many months later and shuffled to the charity shop. It’s why Jason is on a mission to have us replace our microwaves and mixers with a juicer and blender, earn them their kitchen real estate and make them as essential as a kettle and toaster to every home. Now, you’ve read Jason’s mission to have us up our health ante in 2021 and take personal responsibility for improving our nutrition. Key to this is decent equipment to make juicing and blending part of your daily routine. Turn the page and discover the Juice Master duo which are your new best friends for staying on the healthy track…

wheatgrass and leafy greens easily, something which is less effective in a centrifugal juicer.
When is a juicer not a juicer?
The Juice Master Cold Press Juicer goes far beyond the capabilities of a centrifugal juicer and can be used to make nut milks and healthy natural sorbets. If you’ve ever pondered over the list of ingredients and price of shop-bought almond milk, you’ll be amazed at how easy it is to make your own at a fraction of the cost. It also tastes so much better. When your sweet tooth gets the better of you, whip up a batch of strawberry or banana ‘ice cream’ – it’s a healthy revelation!
Easy, natural nut milks “I got recommended this juicer by a friend and thought I’d give it a go. OMG, what a difference from my old juicer! From a few fruits you get a large glass of fresh goodness and it tastes so much better with minimal waste. Just outstanding and highly recommended!’ Lina Vygontiene
A juicy start…
‘I received this juicer as a gift for my birthday, after dropping lots of hints. I have had a few juicers in the past but this is by far the best I have ever used. Quick and easy to clean, the juice tastes great and it looks good too,’ Claire Wynn
With 25 years in the industry, he’s put his knowledge, experience and name to his own state-of-the-art cold press juicer which is a #1 best-seller. Sleek, stylish and effective, thanks to a unique angled chute which takes whole fruit

and veg, it comes with a 10-year motor warranty – now that’s a serious amount of juice!
Why cold press?
Although Jason is a big fan of ‘fast’ centrifugal juicers for their speed, there is no question that a cold press juicer offers much, much more. In addition to extracting more juice from your ingredients, it creates a nutritious drink that will last for up to 72 hours, as less heat is applied during preparation. It can also juice

‘I love the sheer volume and size of the jug. I can make a smoothie or a juice for my whole family of five in one quick batch. Sigh. I love it. Very happy,’ Elaine Thomas ‘I was looking at a Vitamix as it had good reviews and guarantee, but then the Juice Master Super Blend came up with a six-year guarantee, at half the price. Wow! Works brilliantly and quieter than some other blenders. Really pleased with my buy,’ Susan Everard

MIND, BODY AND SPIRIT
It’s in the name,
It’s fast… it’s furious… and, as you might expect from Jason, it’s highly competitive! Anyone for a game of Ultraball™? If you’re lucky enough to stay at Juicy Oasis and been fortunate to spend some time with the Juice Master himself, you may have noticed that he is ever so slightly competitive! (sorry, Jason, Ed). Enviously fit, bursting with energy (we put it down to all those nutritious juices and blends), he throws himself into every activity on retreat, from skimming the clouds with his super bounces
on the rebounding deck, plunging into the lake at Juicy Oasis, or climbing Everest on a spin machine. He also loves a ball game which led him to invent Ultraball™. “I wanted a game that had tension and the possibility of winning right up until the final kick of the game,” says Jason. “Most games, like football, are as good as over if a team goes 3-0 up, but with Ultraball™ it’s never over until it’s over. Even if a team is up say 12-0, if someone scores an Ultraball™ with ten seconds to go, they can overturn a massive score and instantly win. It’s extremely hard to score, but it is possible and that’s what keeps everyone in the game, including those watching, right up until the final whistle!” With plans to build the world’s first purpose-built Ultraball™ court at Jason’s new retreat, Juicy Escape, it’s time to work on your shot and see if you could be an Ultraball™ winner.

Guest Sam, above, was one of the first to stay at the retreat eight years ago, when he was just 13, with his twin Toby and father Paul, a friend of Jason’s. On a return trip, post-lockdown, he shocked even Jason when he scored the first-ever Ultraball™ in 40° heat. It was an epic moment in Juicy Oasis’ history and if you think you can do better, get yourself out to the retreat to have a go!

RULES OF ENGAGE MENT
THE ‘DURATION’ RULE
The game is played over a time period of betwe en 20 – 30 minutes, changing at half time, depending on what time is available at the retreat.
THE ‘NO-CONTACT’ RULE
Ultraball is a non-contac t sport. When an oppos ing player has the ball (even with one hand) you are not allowed to knock the ball out of their hands. Delibe rate barging, pushing or contact is not allowed and can be penal ized (see THE ‘SIN BIN’ RULE) .
THE ‘NO RUNNING WITH THE
BALL’ RULE The only way to move aroun d the court with the ball is to bounce the ball on the ground as you move aka ‘dribb ling’ (same as basketball). You are not allowed to hold the ball and run with it. THE ‘NO DOUBLE DRIB BLE’ RULE
Once you have stopped dribbling the ball, you are not allowed to dribble again. You must either pass the ball to anoth er player on your team or attempt a goal or hoop.
THE ‘INTERCEPTION’ RULE
The only way to gain posse ssion of the ball from the opposition is through an interception . When an opposing player tries to pass the ball, you are allowed to intercept to gain posse ssion. If an opposing player is dribb ling with the ball, you are allowed to gain possession of the ball at any stage between when it leaves their hand and bounces onto the court and back up again.
THE ‘10 SECOND’ RULE
You cannot hold onto the ball for any longer than 10 seconds before passing or attem pting a goal or hoop. You can dribble for as long as you like, but once you stop, you only have 10 seconds to release the ball.
THE ‘NO CONTROL WITH YOUR FEET
’ RULE You cannot gain contro l of the ball with your feet. If it is deemed by the referee that you have gained an advantage by deliberately using your feet, the game will be stopped, and a free throw will be given to the opposing team. If the referee deem s it was ball to foot, rather than foot to ball, then no violation will be called, and the game will contin ue. THE ‘BALL OUT OF COU RT’ RULE
If the ball gets thrown out of the court then the person who threw or kicked the ball must be the one to retrieve it. While they are out of the court, the game will contin ue with a new ball. Once the player has retriev ed the ball, they can come back on the court. This rule doesn’t apply to the goalkeeper .
THE ‘D ZONE’ RULE
You cannot go into the goalkeepers D zone area (aka the KEEPER ZONE). Only the goalkeeper is allowed into the KEEPE R ZONE. The only time a player from the same team is allowe d to enter their KEEPER ZONE is when attempting an ULTRABALL goal or hoop. This area then becom es the ULTRABALL ZONE . The only other exception is when using your hands to stretc h for the ball, but your feet must remai n outside KEEPER ZONE . A player is allowed to have their feet outside the KEEPER ZONE and crawl on their hands to try and retriev e a ball within the zone. If a player from either side is in either of the KEEPER ZONES but isn’t interfering with play, the refere e can wave to carry on play. If a player from either side, is in either of the KEEPER ZONES and is interfering with play, a PENALTY will be given to the oppos ing team.
THE ‘ULTRABALL’ RULE
A player or goalkeeper can score an ULTRABALL GOAL. At any stage the goalkeeper can attempt an ULTRABALL GOAL as they are already in the ULTRA BALL ZONE. If a player wishe s to attempt an ULTRABALL GOAL then they have to enter the ULTRA BALL ZONE. They can do this by dribbling the ball into the zone or by taking a jump from their position into the zone. Once in the zone they must attempt an ULTRA BALL GOAL and only have a maximum of 10 seconds to do so.
THE ‘ULTRABALL GOA L’ RULE
When attempting an ULTRA BALL GOAL, you must be in the ULTRABALL ZONE at your end. Your aim is to then kick the ball to try and get it into either the opposing goal or hoop. You must kick the ball upwards in an arch. You must not kick the ball straight as this can easily cause injury to an opposing player. If a player accidentally kicks the ball straight, this will not be seen as a violation. However, if the referee deems it delibe rate, they will go into the ‘Sin Bin’ (see ‘SIN BIN’ RULE).
THE ‘PENALTY’ RULE
If a pentalty is given, the ball will be placed on the penalty spot. The player taking the shot must place their non-kicking foot at the side of the ball and kick with the other. No run-ups allowed.
THE ‘STOP THE CLOCK’ RULE
The only time the clock will be stopped is when an injury occurs.
THE ‘SIN BIN’ RULE
If it is deemed by the refere e that you have violated the non-contac t rule or deliberately kicked the ball straig ht at an opposing player, you will be placed in the SIN BIN for 30 seconds. If you contin ue to violate either rule, you will be sent off.

onions
A pantry staple and the starting point for so many good meals, the humble onion is nutrient-packed and can help to boost our health
72 www.juicemaster.com

Most of us don’t think twice about grabbing an onion to start dinner, the basis of many dishes from warming soups to comforting slowcooked stews, keeping us nourished and fuelled during the winter months. Yet this innocuous, everyday staple is a powerhouse of nutrients with unique health benefits that can help to boost our immune and digestive systems. A member of the allium family which also includes chives, garlic, shallots and leeks, the medicinal properties of these brilliant bulbs have been used since ancient times. Native to Asia, Egypt’s Pharaohs set such store by the vegetable that the onion was worshipped and buried with dignitaries as it represented eternity. Roman gladiators massaged their limbs with onions before a fight as they believed they provided god-like strength.
which support healthy bacteria in our gut, onions can support our digestive, immune and even brain health. A lesser-known benefit of the pantry essential is that they can help to boost bone health. A study of 24 middle-aged women who drank 3.4oz of onion juice daily showed improved bone mineral density and antioxidant levels. A separate study of 507 menopausal women who ate onions at least once a day showed they had a five per cent greater overall bone density compared with those who omitted the ingredient from their diet. Onions may play a role in controlling blood sugar too – a study of 42 type 2 diabetes patients who ate 100g of fresh red onions showed a reduction in their blood sugar levels by 40mg/ dl after four hours.
RING THE CHANGES
The Ancients also used onions as an everyday cure for common ailments including headaches and mouth infections. The ingredient contains anti-bacterial and antiseptic properties and, for those hardy enough, eating raw onion can kill bacteria and strengthen our teeth. A gentler approach is to cut and soak an onion in drinking water for 6-8 hours, and sip 3-4 tbsps a couple of times a day to help ease the symptoms of colds, coughs, sore throats and fevers.
Low-calorie at only 35 per 100g, onions are packed with vitamins A, B6, C and E, and contain potassium, sodium, iron and dietary fibre. While all varieties are packed with these nutrients, red onions contain anthocyanin, a phytochemical which research shows has anti-diabetic, antiinflammatory and anti-obesity effects. Bursting with flavour, the softer flavour of red onion can also be eaten raw, when its health benefits are most potent, or soaked in salad vinegar for a quick pickle. Don’t forget shallots and spring onions to boost the nutritional value of a salad or healthy stir-fry dish.
Onions are also packed with antioxidants, in particular a free-radical-fighting flavonoid, quercetin, which has been shown to support cardiovascular health and lower blood pressure and cholesterol. Containing prebiotics,
For those who find raw onion difficult to eat or digest, cooked onion provides a milder flavour. Try baking onions in their skin, use an onion to start a soup, or make a gravy, as with Jason’s take on comfort dish, bangers and mash...

NATURE’S
first aid
Hold the prescription! Many common winter ailments can be treated without the need for Big Pharma’s medicines. Follow our guide to healing with nature…
If you're feeling under par, it’s tempting to head to your GP or local pharmacy for a prescription or overthe-counter medicine, but many simply mask the symptoms of an illness with nasty side-effects. Instead, there are plenty of natural antibiotics used through history and which are the go-to remedies in many cultures. Antibiotic, meaning ‘opposing life’, is an antimicrobial agent used to counter bacteria. The ancient Egyptians and Greeks used many plant-based medicines and even a form of mouldy bread as antibiotic treatments. As we become resistant to antibiotic medicines, scientists are increasingly returning to natural product derivatives to develop 'new' treatments. In fact, the discovery of penicillin in 1928 by Sir Alexander Fleming came about when the scientist returned from holiday during a study on influenza and discovered a mould had developed on a culture plate, preventing the growth of bacteria. The following ‘clean team’ of ingredients have incredible natural powers to help our bodies fight infection and heal. While some are everyday ingredients, several are worth seeking out to help your body on the road to recovery, no ‘script' required.
71 77
ECHINACEA
Native to the prairies of North America, echinacea can increase and activate the movement of white blood cells which help us fight infections. In a study of 473 people suffering from flu, drinking an echinacea-based drink was as effective as an anti-viral medication at treating symptoms. Used in conjunction with anti-fungal cream it may help treat recurring thrush. Children, pregnant and breastfeeding women, and diabetics should avoid taking echinacea.
Take as… a tincture, tea or capsules.
GARLIC
This everyday ingredient needs no introduction, but studies show garlic has powerful antibiotic properties. Containing manganese, vitamins B6 and C, selenium and fibre, garlic can help to treat high blood pressure, diabetes and auto-immune and common brain diseases. To benefit from its full properties, eat up to two cloves raw or use generously in cooking.
Take as… eat raw or garlic tablets.
RAW HONEY
One of the oldest known antibiotics, raw or Manuka honey was used by the ancients as a salve for wounds. Today it’s just as effective as a topical treatment, ingested or added to hot water or herbal tea to treat a sore throat – in a study of 105 children, honey outperformed conventional cough medicine. High in calories and sugar, honey should be consumed in moderation.
Take as… a spoonful neat or alternatively dilute in hot water or tea.
GOLDENSEAL
Goldenseal is a herbal antibiotic used to treat a host of skin and mouth conditions, including acne, eczema, dandruff, ringworm, cold sores and ulcers, along with ear and eye infections. Sometimes referred to as Indian turmeric or curcuma, it can also be used to tackle colds, hay fever and upper respiratory tract infections. Infants and pregnant or breastfeeding women should not take goldenseal.
Take as… goldenseal root extract in tablets or goldenseal powder as a tea or tincture.
50 www.juicemaster.com 78
MIND, BODY AND SPIRIT OREGANO OIL
Associated with Italian cooking, the oil extracted from oregano is naturally antibacterial and anti-fungal. Studies have shown it may help to lower cholesterol, reducing LDL (bad) and increasing HDL (good) levels in trials. Candida is a common cause of yeast infections and early studies show oregano oil may provide an alternative treatment.
Take as… tablets or capsules.
CLOVE
Chances are if you’ve ever experienced toothache or a mouth infection, someone has suggested cloves as a natural pain-reliever. Naturally antibacterial, cloves increase our white blood cells to support our immune system and can help us to fight off infection.
Take as… chew one or two whole cloves, make a cup of clove tea or use in cooking.
GINGER
Widely recognised for its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory properties, ginger belongs to the same family as turmeric and is a natural antibiotic with the power to fight many strains of bacteria. Used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine, it has long been a go-to for tackling nausea, sickness, stomach upsets and digestive issues, thanks to its gastricemptying properties. Ginger is also anti-inflammatory and can help to relieve the symptoms of conditions such as osteoand rheumatoid arthritis.
Take as… add to juices, blends or as an infusion in hot water.
TURMERIC
A potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, turmeric has many proven health benefits thanks to its active compound, curcumin, which blocks the action of inflammatory molecules in the body. In studies, people with rheumatoid arthritis found the spice to be more effective than anti-inflammatory drugs. Early studies have shown that curcumin may cross the blood-brain barrier and help to protect against Alzheimer’s.
Take as… a drink, capsules or use daily in cooking.
BIOTIC BLEND
Without probiotics, antibiotics can sometimes damage the protective gut bacteria which can affect your digestive system. Taken regularly, probiotics can inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria, and Juice Master’s Biotic Blend is a unique formula of friendly bacteria which contains live and thriving soil-based organisms.
Take as… two capsules daily before food.

THE GOLDEN
tr angle IT’S ONE OF JUICY OASIS’ GEMS, THE ‘TRIANGLE' BETWEEN THE SAUNA LOFT, INFINITY POOL AND HOT TUB. HERE’S WHY THIS SWEET SPOT IS SO GOOD FOR MIND, BODY AND SOUL… After hours, Juicy Oasis takes on a chilled vibe when guests often tuck themselves away to chat, catch a healthy movie or to retire for an early night, but a lucky few discover one of the retreat’s best-kept secrets, Sauna Club. Within a few steps of each other, the retreat’s sauna, infinity pool and hot tub provide an incredible health-enhancing experience for those who dare to brave a daily dose of the ‘golden triangle’. Invigorating, stimulating and relaxing, guests enjoy a three-way circuit, spending 15 minutes in each spot, with those who are brave enough repeating the cycle for as long as they dare for maximum health benefits. If you are reading this at Juicy Oasis or planning a trip to the retreat, don’t miss out on an incredible experience which you will dream about long after your stay is over – and remember, those who experience ’Sauna Club’ abide by the unspoken ‘rule’ that what goes on after dark at Juicy Oasis, stays at Juicy Oasis. To misquote Fight Club, ‘If this is your first night at Juicy Oasis, you have to try Sauna Club’…

3. Hot tub, 15 mins
Who doesn’t love a relaxing soak in a hot tub? And, even better, research shows taking the plunge is actually good for you. A study in Japan, where tub bathing is ingrained in the culture, followed 30,000 middle-aged people for 20 years and participants who bathed daily had a 28 per cent lower risk of cardiovascular disease and a 26 per cent lower risk of stroke than those who bathed less than twice a week.
1. Sauna loft, 15 mins
Hot, hot, hot! Perched on the edge of the deck, overlooking the lake and mystical mountains, Juicy Oasis’ Sauna Loft is an awe-inspiring place to chill, day or night. After dark it becomes an intimate, cosy spot to unwind. As the dry heat rises, your blood vessels open, improving your circulation, helping you to relax and relieving tension in your muscles, while toxins are flushed from your body. Major studies have linked regular sauna use to a reduction in heart disease, cognitive decline and premature death. A recent Finnish study of 2,300 middle-aged men found that those who used a sauna 4-7 times a week were 50 per cent less likely to die from cardiovascular diseases.
2. Infinity pool, 15 mins
Many visitors to Juicy Oasis ponder why the swimming pool isn’t heated, but the reason is it can’t be, as it’s an infinity pool. Besides, the health benefits of cold-water swimming are well-documented, aiding everything from weight loss to mental-health. Researchers at the University of Cambridge studied winter swimmers at Parliament Hill Lido in London for three years and found they had elevated levels of a protein called RBM3, dubbed the ‘cold shock’ protein, which had slowed braincell death in mice in an earlier experiment. Separately, a 2002 US study found sitting in cold water for 15 minutes reduces blood pressure and heart rate by up to 10 per cent.
