EDITOR’S LETTER

Juicy greetings Hi, Jason here and welcome to the summer edition of Juiced! READ

Tony Robbins has helped shape my destiny. His books are genuine life gamechangers and he is a one-off. Some of his best work is in this book, so prepare to be inspired...

WATCH

...and then tune in to this behindthe-scenes documentary about the great man’s Date with Destiny seminar. Directed by Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Joe Berlinger, it’s emotional viewing.

LISTEN

Ed Sheeran’s album, Divide, continues to break records around the world, and for good reason. There are some beautiful tracks on here and it’s been my go-to album since it came out. So grab a juice, your headphones and chill to his superb music.

The one and only Jason Donovan, pictured above with me at Juicy Oasis, is our Juiced! cover star this issue. I was lucky enough to catch up with Jason when he popped out to the retreat with Gary Barlow (a somewhat star-studded week) and we talked everything from Neighbours, which kicked it all off for him, to his love of juice and a lovely balanced view on health and wellbeing. Not only do we ‘get the juice’ on Jason in this packed summer issue, but you’ll also find out how to set up a ‘home juice retreat’ for the ultimate healthy ‘staycation’, the best bikes to get you on the open road, beautiful light ‘meat-free’ main dishes, refreshing juices and there’s even a cheeky special ‘kids’ club’ section. You will also find the usual dose of inspiration from people who have transformed their lives through juicing, all the latest juicy news and the truth about ‘sugar’ in your juices! Enjoy the issue, and if you’d like to share your juicy success story, don’t be shy – drop my team a line at juiced@juicemaster.com and you could be a magazine star! Also, don’t forget to share and follow us on social media. Have a great summer, juicy people!

JUICE SPOT NEWS AND UPDATES FROM THE WORLD OF JUICING

Love all

Wimbledon is just around the corner, and whether you are an ace on the court or just want to rally your inner Serena Williams, we’ve created this juicy blend that offers a Grand Slam of goodness in every glass. Grab a punnet of sweet strawberries, but instead of a carton of cream substitute live yoghurt for a delicious drink which delivers a game, set and match of satisfaction on a hot summer’s day – then again, it’s just as good when the heavens open, which is an advantage as they often do when they’re playing on Centre Court!

Anyone for tennis? Serves 2 Fresh strawberries 400g Pineapple ½ (peeled) Live yoghurt or soya yoghurt 4 tbsps Ice small handful Pack the strawberries into the chute of your juicer and juice on the slowest setting to extract as much of the fruit’s liquid as possible. Blitz the pineapple on the fastest speed. Fill a tall glass half full with juice, add two tablespoons of yoghurt, top with more juice, ice and then the rest of the yoghurt. Swirl with a spoon or straw to create a sweet, creamy drink that’s as fit as the SW19 crew.

news from Juice Master. As it’s holiday season, we’re interested to see how far this issue of Juiced! travels. If you’re jetting away on a holiday this summer, snap a selfie of yourself with our cover star, Jason Donovan, and email it to juiced@ juicemaster.com by 18 August – the best shot will win a copy of the next issue of Juiced! signed by Jason Vale.

If you haven’t visited for a while, check out the super-cool new juicemasterdelivered.com website. It’s now even easier to order high-quality ready-made juice delivered straight to your door via the site, which has had a stylish makeover. Juice Master Delivered has also added Vitality Shots to the menu and created a new loyalty scheme enabling you to build up your ‘juicy points’ with every purchase and earn money off. So now there’s even more reason to enjoy juicy goodness from the Juice Master.

The Juice Master was named Guru of the Year at The Best You’s inaugural awards scheme, pipping Joe Wicks, The Body Coach – also in the running for the same title – to the post. Recognised as a leading name in the personal-development industry and across the globe for his mission to juice the world, we’re super proud of Jason’s latest achievement.

NEWS

President’s day Did you fall for Jason’s April Fool’s Day joke? He spoofed the juicy community with a shot of Barack Obama taking it easy at his popular Juicy Oasis retreat. The social media post created a flurry of comments before the penny dropped, although Jason’s retreats are undoubtedly fit for a president, prince, princess, queen or lady.

Who’s in da juicy house? It’s always a full house at Juicy Oasis, and last month was no exception. Lady Mone and Lady Bathurst tweeted about their recent stays – the two grand dames certainly added a touch of class to the retreat. Kaiser Chiefs’ Ricky Wilson and Caroline Flack also enjoyed a week in the sun with Jason in Portugal. We loved having you stay, guys!

Still #1!

Hold your horses… Woah! Plans for Jason’s Juice Ranch have been reined in due to Portuguese bureaucracy, which means the launch date for his latest retreat may have to be put back. “It’s frustrating,” says Jason, “but we have a grand plan for the Juice Ranch and, like all good things, it’ll be worth waiting for.” He now hopes to open the ranch on his birthday on 21 June 2018.

No laughing matter Funny guy Jason Manford tweeted he lost 10lbs after a week of Juice Master Delivered – we think you deserve a ‘Bighead’ moment, sir!

It’s a global phenomenon many times over, but the INCREDIBLE 7lbs in 7 Days is STILL #1 in Amazon’s charts! E-book and paperback versions of the title charted at #1 and #2 recently, and also pipped The Hairy Bikers’ new release to the top spot. The appeal of the Juice Master Diet shows no signs of stopping.

home RETREAT THE ULTIMATE STAYCATION JASON'S

JUICY STAYCATION

47 11

What better way to kick-start summer than with a retreat that requires zero packing or travel? Jason’s exclusive staycation plan for Juiced! is based on a week of detox, exercise and relaxation, as enjoyed by Alesha Dixon and Gary Barlow at Juicy Oasis. Take time out for yourself and enjoy seven days that will leave you with a 5-star feeling. At both Juicy Oasis in Portugal and Juicy Mountain in Turkey, guests have a daily exercise routine arranged for them, which always begins with a wake-up yoga session. When it comes to exercise, one of Jason’s personal favourites is rebounding. This mini trampolinebased routine is designed to strengthen and tone the whole body, whilst improving the cardiovascular system, helping you lose weight fast. You can find out more about rebounding at juicemaster.com Whether you head to the gym (and enjoy a well-earned sauna or steam!) or work out at home, build two exercise routines into your day to make the most of your home retreat. One of Jason’s mantras is ‘preparation, preparation, preparation’, and getting the most out of your home retreat begins with a little organisation. Follow Jason’s 7-Day Juice Challenge book, app and DVD, or make things super easy and treat yourself to a highquality, ready made juice plan from juicemasterdelivered.com. Whether you follow Jason’s home retreat guide to the letter or develop your own plan, enjoy your week!

JUICY STAYCATION

A day in the life of a

Juice Master retreat This is your retreat, so the following timeline is intended to be used flexibly. However, it's amazing how enjoyable rising early when you're not running to daily commitments can be. Whatever hour you start your day, aim to follow the gap between juices so that you are well-nourished throughout the day.

7am

Just add liquid

Start your morning gently. Jason highly recommends waking up each morning of the programme with hot water and lemon to alkalise your system. Simply take a slice of unwaxed lemon and put it into a mug and pour boiling water over it. You can drink as many of these as you like each day; they are a great system cleanser. Jason follows this with a 3-4oz shot of his Powergreens supplement – you can enjoy up to two litres of this super nutrient-charged liquid throughout the day. If you prefer, you can add a slice of lemon or lime to enhance the flavour of the drink.

7.15am

Stretch yourself

At Juice Master retreats, guests start the day with a serene yoga session and you can do the same at home. Get your body moving with 30 minutes

of gentle exercise. Studies have shown that exercising twice a day significantly boosts the effect on your system, so plan in at least two sessions to make your body a fat-burning machine.

7.45am

Moving story

Up the ante with a short burst of high energy exercise. Go for a run outside or hop on your rebounder for a brisk 30 minutes and really wake things up.

8.15am

Grab a juice or blend

Breakfast! Your first juice or blend of the day, but take your time and savour each sip to let your body enjoy the nutritional intake to the max.

9am

Feed your mind

Use this week to nourish your mind too. Seek out motivational authors such as Jason's favourite, Tony Robbins, read the Juice Master's own best-selling books to help you on your detox, and issues of Juiced! magazine for more inspiration. Download ebooks to your device or order some paperbacks and enjoy the simple pleasure of a good, old-fashioned page-turner. Listen to some of the many incredible TED talks.

rab your first juice of the day but take your time and savour G each sip to let your body enjoy the nturitional intake to the max

47 13

JUICY STAYCATION

10am

Step outside

At this time of year, getting outside is a super booster for mind and body, so plan a relaxing yet uplifting morning walk. Reconnect with nature as a way to be mindful, reflective and calm.

11am

Grab a juice or blend

If you have chosen a Juice Master Delivered plan, enjoy your second bottled juice of the day, or whip up a juice or blend with your Retro Cold Press. If creating your own, use an avocado-based recipe which is packed with goodness and will fill you up.

12pm

Hit it!

It's time for a high-intensity workout. Head to the gym for a class or download Jason's Bounce Fit App from iTunes or Google Play and give it everything you've got for 20 minutes.

1pm

Warm-down yoga

Now slow things down with some gentle yoga moves. As your body quietens, focus on your breathing and the stillness around you as you relax.

2pm

Grab a juice or blend

After a liquid lunch of good stuff, guests at Juicy Oasis and Juicy Mountain enjoy a period of rest and relaxation in

the afternoon, getting some vitamin D outside, maybe with a swim. Make this a digital detox week and avoid negative, energy-draining 'un-social' media. Instead unwind with an audio book in the garden or head to a local pool for a dip. If you need extra rest, take a siesta and recharge your energy levels.

5pm

Grab a juice or blend

Refuel with a juice or blend, packed with essential fats, amino acids, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and water - all you need for a boost.

6pm

Hit it!

Go for your second high-intensity workout of the day. At Juicy Oasis and Juicy Mountain activities include volleyball or a run, so hit the road or seek out a class nearby.

8pm

Grab a juice or blend

If you are headed to the gym, pack your last juice of the day in a flask and enjoy it in the sauna or steam room after a workout for the ultimate wind-down.

9.30–10pm

And so to bed!

Juice Master Delivered juices or Jason's recipes should leave you feeling comfortably full, but if you are still hungry enjoy a cup of mint or fennel tea with an SOS bar.

Enjoy a 7-day juice plan from juicemasterdelivered.com or buy Jason's best selling book, the 7-Day Juice Challenge, (£6.99), 7-Day Juice Challenge Recipe & Coaching DVD (£7.50) at juicemaster.com or download the 7-Day Juice Challenge App (£6.99) from iTunes and Google Play. JASON’S TOP HOME RETREAT TIPS Create your own home juicing station If you are making your own juices, you’ll be spending quite a lot of time in the kitchen so reconfigure the work surfaces and fridge so you’re not having to search for equipment and ingredients as you go along. Clear the surfaces by putting the microwave, coffee machine and mixer in the cupboard – they’re not the kit you need this week! Make sure your knives are sharp and you have a cleaning brush to keep your juicer in peak condition. Be primed and ready Get into the habit of making sure you have all your ingredients prepared and on your chopping board before you begin juicing. It ensures you don’t miss out on a crucial ingredient. Get ahead by chopping and storing fruit and vegetables in Stayfresh Longer bags so all you need to do is add them to your juicer and hit start. Drink your juice slowly Across this entire experience, and whenever you juice for that matter, always ‘chew’ your juices. Doing this gets vital enzymes, essential for digestion, interacting with saliva to start the process. Drinking slowly gives your stomach time to accept eating signals from your brain to prepare for food. You will survive... You may experience headaches or tiredness during the first couple of days. This is entirely normal as your body adjusts. Allow yourself to go with it – you will soon feel better once the 'junk' is eliminated from your system. On average, this lasts around 72 hours and is followed by a juice 'high'. Watch the coaching videos on Jason’s bestselling 7-Day Juice Challenge app You're not alone! If you’re having a dip at any point, it’s useful to hear Jason’s encouraging words to help you through this life-affirming experience. Change your routine for the week Use this week to change things about your life that you’ve been meaning to address. Your plan already removes alcohol and poor eating from the list, but maybe you spend too much time on screens or watching TV. Turn your living room into a yoga studio and your bathroom into a spa. Line up some delicious oils and products to make your retreat complete. It's just the beginning... Enjoy the week and use it as a long-term catalyst for life-long change towards a healthier and happier you.

JUICY INTERVIEW

IT’S JASON DONOVAN especially for you With a string of summer festivals ahead of an autumn tour, Jason Donovan is at the top of his game once more, and juicing plays a starring role in his amazing healthy life

17

JUICY INTERVIEW

Neighbours, a string of earworm 80s chart hits, Joseph, followed by drug addiction and a very public fall from grace. It’s the popular version of the Jason Donovan story, but there’s far more to this versatile, talented actor, musician and presenter who openly shares his warts-and-all story with an honesty that is rarely found in the celebrity world. It’s this openness which is at the heart of his plans this autumn, when he takes to the road with his Jason Donovan & His Amazing Midlife Crisis Tour, to share the highs and lows – along with the outrageous outtakes – of a 40-year performing career. The nationwide 34-date tour’s title is a deliberate play on the technicolour role which helped to sear him in our collective conscience as a national treasure. “It’s a bit of fun and an oxymoron in some ways,” laughs Jason. “Joseph represents purity, youth and loveliness, and maybe I’m none of those, but it’s not important in the scheme of things. “I don’t usually get to talk a lot when I’m performing on stage, but I’m known for my chat and I’ve never had an opportunity to explore that side of things before. I think people are genuinely interested to know the story of the five crazy years of stardom that I experienced, followed by a completely different type of crazy, and how I got my life together again. “I always enjoy a good project leading up to Christmas, and although I haven’t thought too much about the show’s content yet, I’ve seen some pretty interesting things during my career, so there’s plenty to talk about. “I’m performing at small venues and that’s an interesting experience in itself. It’ll be an opportunity for people to ask me questions, a bit like being interviewed or being at a seminar, and there’ll also be a few acoustic tracks along the way too.

“I felt so clean after spending a week at Juicy Oasis, living on nothing but pure, fresh juice”

18

“I turn 50 next year and it’s a great moment to look back and reflect on my life so far. It’s also a bit of therapy for me and I’m going to be very honest about the good times, bad times and fun times…” Honesty is undoubtedly one of Jason’s endearing traits, and while he says he feels lucky to have had such an amazing career, he says most people don’t realise such a schedule comes at a cost. “I’m often away for eight weeks at a time, and that obviously impacts both me and my family, but I’m not complaining and I know how fortunate I am to be in the position which I am.” Indeed, the national-treasure mantle which has been attached to him after four decades in show business is something he says he values and appreciates. “When you have a successful show like Neighbours, people make an emotional connection to the characters they see on screen, and I followed this with a move into music with hit songs which, for many, were associated with their first love

affair, teenage years or early adulthood. It’s a meaningful connection which shows such as the X Factor try to capitalise on each year.” Perhaps a precursor to today’s talentspotting TV shows, Jason’s own musical career was nurtured by pop moguls Stock Aitken Waterman, and between 1988–1991 he charted 16 hit singles and achieved 30 million record sales – commercial success which silenced the critics of actors-turnedmusicians. Although just 20 when pop stardom hit, Jason had already been acting for almost a decade, having made his first appearance on Australian series Skyways in 1980, and joining the Neighbours cast six years later. Although he had the support of his actor father Terence Donovan, he made his own success after being told by Terence not to expect to be chauffeured to auditions. It’s a philosophy he’s always followed and he doesn’t believe in fate. “I don’t believe in luck,” says Jason. “You make your own path and I’ve definitely made decisions in my life which have impacted what followed. I think acting has always been closest to my heart and in a way I was seduced by music at a very early age. I fell in love with pop music but I didn’t anticipate being in musicals, although on paper it’s probably a logical development. “Maybe I should have taken more off-thecuff projects, and they were on the table at the time, which would have taken me further in the film industry. But I always say to people, ‘The good news is I’m Jason Donovan. The bad news is I’m Jason Donovan,’ and getting directors to see beyond the loincloth of Joseph and look at you differently is a challenge. “However, if I hadn’t gone into musicals, I wouldn’t have met my wife and had my family, and there’s more to life than my career.” It was meeting his wife, Angela Malloch, a stage manager on The Rocky Horror Show, that pulled Jason back from the depths of drug addiction, when she found out she was expecting the couple’s first child, Jemma, now 16. A son, Zac, 15, and second daughter, Molly, 5, complete the Donovan family. “It was a wake-up call,” says Jason. “It was time to stop my crazy period, I was going to be a dad. I’m not proud of what was going on in my life in the 90s, but I’m a strong person and I made a decision to change. “No-one else can do it but you, and not everyone has the strength, but with addiction there has to be a desire to want to change. Some people don’t have to go that far to hit

19

JUICY INTERVIEW

“Separately the ingredients aren’t sexy, but juicing makes it possible to digest all those vegetables and fruit in one go” the lowest point and see it, but we need to recognise human beings are vulnerable and it’s OK – everyone deserves a second chance.” Today, Jason is in great mental and physical health and juicing plays a part in staying on top of a hectic schedule. “I’ve always believed physical fitness is important,” he says, “and I’m always on the go. I’ve learnt that you can experience a natural high through good exercise and nutrition, and I make sure I have a healthy diet and drink plenty of water. “I’ve juiced for five years on a massive scale and it’s part of my daily life. Australia has a strong juicing culture and it’s logical really. Separately the ingredients aren’t sexy, but juicing makes it possible to digest all those vegetables and fruit in one go, and the philosophy is simple really. “It doesn’t matter when, but it’s a juice a day for me and it has to be green – my days of getting pineapple and mango are gone! For me it’s broccoli, lime, and it has to have ginger. In fact, it doesn’t even have to taste good, I just know it’s doing good things.” Having seen Jason Vale on The Sunday Show, it was showbiz pal Gary Barlow who suggested Jason join him and the Juice Master for a week at Juicy Oasis last year. “It was a fantastic week and Jason’s a brilliant guy – we have a great name together!” laughs Jason. “I felt so clean after spending a week at Juicy Oasis, living on nothing but pure, fresh juice. It doesn’t have to be light either, and when you add an avocado or a banana, juice fills you up and gives you so much energy. “It’s beautiful and at the end of the week at Juicy Oasis I was playing tennis and I felt like I was 21 again, I was playing so well, it was incredible. I would definitely go back and, although I’ve got to convince my wife a week on juice is enjoyable, it was my idea of heaven. “I’m Australian and we are an incredibly active nation. Whether we’re walking or on the beach, we love being outdoors and have a strong desire to be fit and well. We tend to burrow in Britain during the winter months, but I was brought up with an outdoor philosophy by my dad.”

Place one apple in the chute of your juicer; behind it tightly pack in the spinach, followed by the lemon, ginger, broccoli, cucumber, celery and the other apple. Juice the lot and pour into a glass over ice or blitz with ice in a blender.

Life is busy for Jason, who has always been open to taking on new projects over the years. Having appeared on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! and Strictly Come Dancing – finishing third in both shows – he now presents a regular All 80s Show on Heart Radio. This summer he will perform at a series of festivals, before that midlife tour… “I love to work and play hard. If I’ve had a busy week, there’s nothing better than Sunday lunch with family and friends, a glass of something and great food – to me it’s the perfect moment.” As dreams go, it will most definitely do. ■ For details of Jason Donovan & His Amazing Midlife Crisis Tour dates, visit jasondonovan.com

BIG JUICE SUMMER CHALLENGE SALADS

Meat free mains Who needs BBQ steaks, ribs and sausages when you’ve got a host of delicious salads from Jason’s Super fast Food cookbook to choose from? Bursting with healthy, flavoursome ingredients, it’s time to rethink the humble salad and switch it from side to main this summer 47 25 23

Rocket, avocado, grilled asparagus & shaved parmesan with a roasted garlic, lemon & honey dressing This simple salad contains the bad boys of the nutrition world – avocado, asparagus and garlic. Avocado is the single most nutritious stand-alone food in the world, and garlic is known as ‘nature’s doctor’ because of its antibiotic properties. Rocket leaves are a good source of vitamins A, C and K along with minerals copper and iron. Asparagus has long been used in many traditional medicines to treat conditions like irritable bowel syndrome. It was of course Hippocrates who famously said, ‘Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food,’ and under its simplelooking exterior, this superfood salad packs one hell of a nutritional punch. The parmesan and roasted garlic, lemon and honey dressing give it the final taste finish that it needs to take it from ‘OK’ to ‘out of the park’.

Rocket, avocado, grilled asparagus & shaved parmesan salad Asparagus spears 8 Olive oil 2 tbsps Ground black pepper 1 generous pinch Avocado (ripe) 2 medium Parmesan or Parmigiano Reggiano Cheese* 75g/3oz Rocket 100g or 2 large handfuls Remove any hard ends from the asparagus, cut in half and place on a plate. Pour over half the olive oil, sprinkle with black pepper, turning each piece to coat in the oil. Cut the avocados in half; remove the stones, scoop out the flesh and cut into slices. Shave the cheese with a vegetable peeler into thin slices. Put the rocket into a bowl, drizzle over the remaining olive oil and lightly toss. COOK Heat a griddle pan on a hot ring, add the asparagus and allow to cook for 2–3 minutes before turning and cooking for a further 2–3 minutes.

24

Roasted garlic, lemon & honey dressing Garlic 2 cloves (skin on) Lemon 1⁄2 Olive oil 3 tbsps Honey* 1 tsp Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F/gas mark 4). Place the cloves of garlic onto a baking tray with the skin on and cook for 5 minutes. Remove the garlic from the oven, carefully peel (it’s going to be hot!) and take off any hard ends. Add to the small mixing container of a hand blender (making sure the blade is already in). Squeeze the lemon juice directly into the container, and then add the oil and honey. Blitz for 20 seconds. SERVE Place the rocket onto the middle of a plate, add the avocado, asparagus and cheese, and drizzle over the dressing. * If vegan, leave these ingredients out – it will taste just as good without!

SUMMER SALADS

Fruity couscous with almond flakes & tahini, lemon & mint dressing Not all salads have a lettuce-leaf foundation and this ‘fruity couscous’ is a shining example. What gives it that certain something, which I feel all dishes of this nature require, is the tahini, lemon and mint dressing. Not only does this provide an excellent source of B vitamins and essential fatty acids, but it also transforms what could otherwise be a bland couscous salad into something exciting and full of flavour. OK, so I am doing the stand-alone couscous salad a little disservice as it’s actually pretty tasty on its own, but we’re not looking for pretty tasty, we’re looking for ‘Are you kidding me, Vale!’ when it comes to flavours. Healthy food of the past could be accused of being like cardboard and each of these recipes has had to reach superfood status, while at the same time be ‘dancing on your taste buds’ tasty. This simple dish hits these requirements in abundance – enjoy!

Tahini, Lemon & Mint Dressing Fresh mint 20g or 1 small handful Lemon (juice of) 1/2 Tahini 2 tbsps Olive oil 3 tbsps

Remove the leaves from the mint, discard the stems and place in the small container of your Retro Super Blend, add the lemon juice, tahini and olive oil.

Fruity couscous with almond flakes Spring onion 1 stalk Oranges 2 large Apricots (unsulphured if possible) 6 Fresh mint 20g or 1 small handful Couscous 150g/5oz Tap water (see recipe) Himalayan rock salt 1 pinch Raisins 20g or 1 small handful Cranberries (dried) 20g or 1 small handful Almond flakes 20g or 1 small handful Remove the end and the outer layer from the spring onion before slicing thinly. Cut the oranges in half and squeeze the juice into a saucepan. Chop the apricots into pieces (similar size to a raisin). Remove the leaves from the mint, discard the stalks and chop finely. Rinse the couscous and add to a saucepan containing the orange juice, enough water to total 225ml and salt. Bring to the boil, reduce the heat and simmer for 5 minutes, stirring sporadically. As soon as the liquid has been absorbed, remove from the heat. Allow the couscous to stand for 10 minutes, then add the raisins, cranberries, apricots, almonds, spring onion, mint and dressing. Mix well and enjoy slightly warm or allow to cool.

SUMMER SALADS

Mozzarella, pear & date salad, drizzled with an orange & balsamic reduction I was a vegan for many years and the one thing I missed more than anything else was cheese. I like most cheeses, but there’s something about mozzarella that makes it stand out from the cheesy crowd. You may immediately think that the fact it’s made from buffalo and not cow’s milk is the clear defining difference, but mozzarella is often made from cow’s milk too. No, the critical factor is its moisture content and texture. Most cheeses are ‘chewy’, but mozzarella is what I describe as the ‘oyster’ of the cheese world as it tends to just slide down the throat. The combination of pear, dates and this beautiful cheese is one to cherish. Add the sweet and tangy Orange & Balsamic Reduction and you take this already beautiful combination to a level of decadence rarely seen outside Mayfair.

Mozzarella, pear & date salad with orange & balsamic reduction Pear (ripe) 1 Dates (Medjool are the best) 6 Mozzarella 240g/8.5oz Mixed leaves 120g or 2 large handfuls Pumpkin seeds 30g or 1 small handful Cut the pears into quarters, remove the core and thinly slice. Remove any hard ends and stones from the dates and cut into quarters. Tear the mozzarella into bite-sized chunks (it looks better than cut with a knife).

Orange & Balsamic Reduction Oranges 2 Balsamic vinegar 4 tbsps Squeeze the juice of the oranges directly into a small saucepan. Add the vinegar to the pan and gently simmer (with the lid off) for 30 minutes, until the mixture has reduced and thickened a little. Top tip: wash the pan as soon as possible! SERVE Place the pear, dates, mozzarella, mixed leaves, pumpkin seeds and reduction into a salad bowl and toss.

Warm ginger infused butternut squash, pear and parmesan salad The second you add any warmth to a salad I feel you totally transform it, from something light to have for lunch on a fine summer’s day, to a genuinely warming meal that can be enjoyed anytime. The ginger-infused butternut squash and toasted pine nuts are the real stars here. Packed with an abundance of nutrition and flavour, this dish is also unbelievably filling. Unlike a lot of salads, where I’m often tempted to have a nice cheeky side of sweet potato fries, I find I need nothing extra to satisfy my appetite with this. Serve with an orange & balsamic reduction (see left). Butternut squash 1⁄2 small Olive oil 2 tbsps Himalayan rock salt 1 pinch Ground black pepper 1 generous pinch Fresh ginger 4cm x 4cm chunk Pear (ripe) 1 Parmesan or Parmigiano Reggiano Cheese 75g/3oz Mixed leaves 75g or 2 handfuls Pine nuts 50g or 1 handful

GET READY, SET... Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F/gas mark 4). Remove the ends from the butternut squash and peel. Cut in half, remove the seeds and chop into bite-sized chunks (about 1cm x 1cm), then scatter onto a baking tray. Drizzle over half the oil and sprinkle over the salt and pepper. Peel, then grate the ginger directly onto the butternut squash and mix so that the squash is coated in oil and seasoning. Cook for 30-35 minutes. PREPARE Cut the pear into quarters; remove the core and slice into thin strips. Shave the cheese with a vegetable peeler into very thin slivers. Put the mixed leaves into a salad bowl; add the pear and remaining olive oil, and lightly toss. When the butternut squash is cooked, remove from the oven. Heat a dry frying pan on the hob and toast the pine nuts for 2–3 minutes over a medium heat until golden, stirring continually, to avoid burning. SERVE Put the leaves and pear onto a plate; add the butternut squash, cheese and nuts. Finish with the orange & balsamic reduction. beyond simple measurements, and the Super Juice Me! 7-Day Challenge provided a springboard for people to take juicing to the next level. Many posted that they planned to extend their juice challenge to 10, 14 or even 28 days, while others wrote that it was the perfect way to segue to a new, healthy 2-3-2 juice plan. A number of people said that having followed Jason’s Big January Clean-up Challenge – which combined 14 days of the Super Juice Me! plan with seven days of clean eating recipes from Jason’s cookbook, Super fast Food – the Super Juice Me! 7-Day Challenge was the perfect spring ‘top-up’. A growing number of those who signed-up for the Super Juice Me! 7-Day Challenge also made it super easy on themselves by ordering high-quality, ready-made juice without the prep from juicemasterdelivered.com. However they got their juicy goodness, the end result was the same – 'At the end of seven days, you feel like you’ve been plugged in,' wrote one super juicer at the end of the challenge. We couldn’t put it better ourselves, and a big congratulations to all who took part – we raise a glass of juicy goodness to you!

MY JUICE JOURNEY

MY BIG

juicy adventure Mapping miles, years and a makeover, three readers share their fantastic juicy journeys with Juiced! As the Juice Master’s own juice journey shows, juicing has far-reaching effects on our health and wellbeing. Whether it’s weight loss, better skin, improved health, increased energy levels or enhanced mental clarity, juicing – quite literally – changes lives. For Penny Moreton (left), juicing was the catalyst for a journey that has taken her around the world. Penny had endured a lifetime of bowel disease, and stress played a key factor in triggering three major episodes of illness in 2007, 2010 and 2013. Finally diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and prescribed a range of medication by a series of consultants, conventional treatments failed to improve her condition.

book and immediately contacted the Juice Master team to beg for a place during Jason’s last week in Portugal, in September 2014. “I arrived at Juicy Oasis and threw myself into everything,” says Penny. “With Jason at the helm I finally felt like a weight had been lifted and there was the potential to tackle my health in a different way. I remember hearing him give a fantastic talk and asking, “What will you do if you do nothing?” and it triggered something in my subconscious.

Frustrated, Penny started to investigate holistic healing and discovered Juice Master Jason Vale. Encouraged by what she learned about the positive benefits of juicing, she invested in a juicer and two of Jason’s books, Turbo-charge Your Life in 14 Days and the 7-Day Juice Challenge.

“Leaving Juicy Oasis, I felt better than I had in years, and I bought a juicer and blender and resolved to drink a quart of green juice every day. I started to experiment with other recipes and cut out refined sugar from my diet. I was never overweight and had always eaten a fairly clean diet, but after a year of juicing my health started to turn a massive corner, much to the amazement of the consultants I was still seeing.

Noticing a change in her health after following the 7-day plan, Penny read about Jason’s retreat, Juicy Oasis, in the

him about the transformation that juicing had made to my health and he was intrigued to investigate the Juice Master and FoodMatters® sites as an alternative way to tackle bowel disease. BIG ADVENTURES “A year later, I undertook a journey around the world, something I would never have considered previously. Now I felt in control of my health and I wanted to share my experience of reclaiming my life and the new vitality that I had discovered along the way. “I travelled to Australia to meet James Colquhoun and Laurentine ten Bosch, founders of FoodMatters®, and returned to Juicy Oasis for a third visit which really felt like a homecoming. It’s my intention to return each year as it was the place where my journey of health recovery began, and I feel so grateful to Jason and his team. “Juicing has, quite literally, saved my life and although I am approaching 60, nobody believes I am that old when I tell them my age. Oasis in autumn 2015 where I had the opportunity to share my juicing success story with Jason. “By now I was enjoying two or three juices every day and my symptoms had all but gone. My energy levels had surged and I was running marathons and ultramarathons, which was an incredible turnaround from where I had been physically and mentally just a year before. In addition to juicing, I had completely transformed my diet, which is now largely vegan with plenty of avocados and supplemented by oily fish, three times a week. “Three days after I returned from Juicy Oasis, I had an appointment with a consultant and he decided that I was cured, which was incredible. I told

“I do get quite evangelical about my health and how changing my diet was the answer to my illness. I worry about the pressures that consumption of refined sugar and fat is putting upon the world, and the effects on the health of future generations. “It’s happening everywhere, even in developing countries whose diets are changing and becoming more westernised, and we need to seriously alter the way we think about food and health to make positive change. “My juicy journey has undoubtedly transformed my life and introduced me to people and places that I would never otherwise have experienced. I will always be grateful for the second chance that juicing has given me, to live my life to the full.” ■

Jane’s

Ode to juicing I was tired all the time and looking pale I wanted glowing skin, healthy hair and nails

I was a juicing

PIONEER

“I don’t know what inspired me to buy a juicer 12 years ago, but I do remember it came with a free book, The Juice Master’s Ultimate Fast Food: Discover the Power of Raw Juice, by Jason Vale,” says Jane Blackburn. “It was one of his first books and I found it interesting as it offered an understanding of nutrition and how to break the cycle of food addiction – in fact I’ve still got the book and use the recipes today. “I’m sad to say the juicer I had then was a pain to clean, and eventually it found its way to the back of the cupboard, the graveyard for many machines, but my interest was piqued and I continued to read about the benefits of juicing and follow Jason online. “In April 2013, at the age of 47, I decided it was time to take up a juice challenge and joined in Jason’s 5lbs in 5 days plan, having invested in a brand-new juicer that was far simpler to clean. I was surprised at how easy I found the plan and I felt so much better. I had never been overweight but I was bloated, had spotty problem skin and felt constantly tired. During the challenge, I lost weight and it stayed off, but my goal was to wake up in the morning and feel like I’d had a good night’s sleep. I had so much energy and felt so positive, I sent a poem to Juicy HQ (see right). “Since then, I’ve joined in quite a few of Jason’s challenges and continue to follow him on Facebook and Twitter. This year, in January, I decided I wanted

to tackle my ‘bad sugar’ intake for good, so I signed up for Jason’s 21-day Big January Clean-up and got a ticket for his Reclaim Your Health seminar at London’s Eventim Apollo. GET UP AND GO “It was all the inspiration I needed – the only challenge was I had no kitchen as we were undertaking some home renovations, so I opted for Juice Master Delivered which was brilliant. I enjoyed the delicious ready-made juices and lost a stone during the challenge, along with my sweet tooth which had dogged me for 50 years! No more eating the leftover Christmas chocolates nobody wanted – my new snack of choice is an apple, orange or Juice Master Juice in a Bar. I’m also sleeping better and now feel ready to get up each morning. “I read Super Juice Me! and The Simple Way To Stop Eating Chocolate which made absolute sense and helped me understand more about our relationship with food. Now my kitchen is almost complete, I’m going to invest in a Retro Cold Press juicer to take pride of place, and my next goal is to go to Juicy Oasis. “Having taken the 21-day challenge, I think I could do a 28-day one, but for now I follow Jason’s 5:2 juice plan, using his quarterly challenges to reset my body. It’s not difficult and it’s a way of life I enjoy. I don’t think of it as a diet, but simply as being healthy and ‘the best you’.” ■

MY JUICE JOURNEY

super juice journey I took a 28-day

As Jason always says, change must come from within, and for Ian Laishley it was a decision to make his commitment to complete the 28-day Super Juice Me! plan public that told the world he was serious about his transformation. Launching a blog (my28daysuperjuice. wordpress.com) to track his progress, he embarked upon the challenge to consume high quality, cold-pressed juice for almost a month. He decided to invest in two 14-day Juice Master Delivered plans to give himself the best chance of success. Starting out at 202lbs, his three-year-old daughter, Poppy, was his inspiration for change. BRAIN POWER “Within a few days of starting the 28-day plan, I felt more focused and alive – like my brain was working more efficiently – and was sleeping better,” explains Ian. “The other significant shift was that I wanted to choose healthy foods when I began eating again, rather than put junk into my body, which was a huge change in mindset. Within a week, my juice-only diet became second nature and I felt 100 per cent committed to my goal.” Adding visits to the gym for spin classes, swimming and running sessions, Ian quickly began to see results and to feel in great shape. Even the potential pitfall of a gig with his band, where the beers tend to flow freely, couldn’t dent his new-found zest for healthy living.

“It was a revelation to discover that I can gig and only drink water!,” says Ian. “My clothes fitted far better and I played all night without a beer in sight, and that was a real test. In fact, a real treat is a post-gig cheese on toast, which was far tougher to resist. “On day 11 of the challenge, I slipped and had a coffee, and my body certainly let me know that it wasn’t happy about that. It was interesting to see how it reacted when I deviated from the plan. The weekends were toughest, not because I felt hungry as the juices were filling, but because so much of what we do socially revolves around food. Easter fell during my challenge and it was the first time I hadn’t eaten a chocolate egg, but instead I got up and went for a run, which was different! Feeling great was all the encouragement I needed and at the halfway point I had lost almost a stone in weight.” Towards the end of his challenge, Ian embarked on a fitness programme with a personal trainer to boost his activity levels. “I was in a terrible food cycle,” says Ian. “I didn’t eat a lot, but I ate the wrong things at the wrong time. I have a new respect for food and having put so much effort into cleansing my system, I have no wish to destroy that. The 28day plan was a brilliant way to kick-start a total lifestyle change. I lost around 20lbs and am now 183lbs, which is an amazing achievement. Publicising my journey ensured I stuck to it and I have never felt healthier or happier.” ■

JASON ON...

The

TRUTH about SUGAR

It’s been dubbed the new smoking, and juices are apparently full of it according to the headlines. But what is the truth about the white stuff, and is fresh juicing the same as eating a doughnut? Jason puts the record straight for Juiced! Tobacco, fat and sugar – they are the archenemies of our health and from April 2018 there is to be a new sugar tax on sweet, fizzy drinks, which will help fund sport in schools. It’s a laudable effort, particularly to persuade families to encourage their children to swap cans of pop for natural hydration, but the issue becomes a bit confused when it comes to juice. It’s easy for juice-sceptics to point the finger at the sugar in a glass of freshly extracted juice, but – and here’s the truth – these are natural sugars, and are NOT the same as the sugar found in fizzy drinks, sweets and cakes. In the 5-Day Juice Challenge, which was published way back in 2014 before sugar started hitting the headlines as public enemy #1, I wrote, ‘The white refined nutrient-stripped sugar found in a doughnut and a fizzy drink is clearly not the same as the unrefined vitamin, mineral and soluble fibre-rich ‘sugar’ found in an apple and the fresh juice extracted from it'. To most of us it’s blindingly obvious and plain common sense, but it is refined sugar which is the guilty culprit in causing obesity and preventable

36

lifestyle diseases. Highly addictive – just like nicotine – it is found in everything from bread, chips, crisps, chocolate bars, fizzy drinks, muffins, waffles, biscuits – the list is endless. However, you will NOT find it in broccoli, kale, carrots, apples, spinach, celery, avocados, cucumber or any other natural product that goes into a freshly extracted juice. Even though many of us are self-confessed juice fanatics, it’s because we know the fantastic feeling our bodies experience when we enjoy freshly extracted fruit and vegetable juice. This is NOT the same as the addiction to refined sugar which has people craving foods which are unhealthy and potentially hazardous to their wellbeing, and which – when denied – causes headaches, anxiety, the shakes and other symptoms of withdrawal. When people claim, ‘All sugars are the same,’ they miss the point that the

unrefined sugars found in fruit and vegetables also contain micronutrients and soluble fibre. It is this fibre which helps to slow down the absorption of sugars in the bloodstream. Shop bought pasteurised juices do not have this fibre and it’s because of this that these juices raise sugar levels too quickly. The ‘all sugars are the same’ argument also doesn’t make sense when you look at freshly extracted juices in action. When people are on one of my juice-only plans, they will still have sugar withdrawal during the first 72 hours. If the juices are all full of sugar, as is the claim, then how can someone still crave sugar or suffer sugar withdrawal when they are apparently only having sugar in the form of juice?! Once we’re past the unrefined sugar debate, there’s the sticky matter of high/low Glycemic Index (GI). Now, again, common sense must be applied. A pasteurised bottle or carton of apple juice does indeed have a high GI, and invariably a host of chemicals too, but a freshly extracted homemade apple juice has none of these and is – by contrast – low GI. The heat applied

during the pasteurisation process completely changes the molecular structure and functioning nutrition of any liquid, but this does NOT happen when you juice fruit and vegetables. Next up is fructose, traditionally seen as a natural sugar found in fruit and vegetables. Well, while this is true, fructose is also a cheap, manmade ingredient that food manufacturers add, particularly to pasteurised juices, where it becomes a bad boy, along with glucose and many of the other manufactured refined sugar ingredients found in processed foods. Again, common sense must be applied, and a freshly extracted juice – even with its natural fructose – does not have the same effect as refined sugar products on our bodies. It’s things like high fructose corn syrup and white table sugar (50 per cent fructose) which are the problem. Remember juicy people, ‘The sugar in an apple is indeed not the same as the sugar in a doughnut’. Say it enough and perhaps it will stick, because it really is as simple as that.

Big and

beautiful

A refreshing summertime favourite, watermelon is a veritable feast of goodness. Vitamin-packed, each fruit is 92 per cent water and produces around six cups of juice, so it's a sweet way to stay hydrated throughout the summer months

Peak nutrition Offering anti-inflammatory and antioxidant support, watermelon is a source of vitamins A, C, B6 and B1, potassium and magnesium. Lycopene is the carotenoid that gives the fruit its luscious red colour. This important antioxidant is only available in a few other foods such as tomatoes, and watermelon is said to contain higher levels than any other fresh fruit or vegetable. The benefits of this compound have been tested in a number of studies for cardiovascular diseases and prostate cancer and, although not conclusive, the Mediterranean diet which is high in lycopene is regarded as one of the healthiest in the world.

Waste not want not Interestingly, watermelon can be considered as either a fruit or a vegetable and is edible in its entirety. As a member of the cucurbitaceae plant family of gourds, it is related to cucumber, squash

46

and pumpkin. Watermelon is planted from seeds or seedlings, harvested and then cleared from the field just like these other vegetables. At the end of the juicing process, don’t trash the firm white rind – it can be used as an ingredient for curry, chutney or a delicious summer gazpacho.

Pick your perfect fruit The best juices and smoothies always rely on the healthiest ingredients. When choosing your watermelon, look for a firm, symmetrical fruit, free from bruises or dents. The underside of the watermelon should also have a creamy yellow spot from where it has rested on the ground and ripened in the sun. Lift it and get a measure of its weight; a watermelon should be heavy for its size. A fresh watermelon lasts for three to four weeks after it is cut from the vine, making it a great traveller from warmer climes to our supermarket shelves. Make the most of this super hydrator's season and raise a glass of the pink stuff.

INGREDIENT FOCUS

Watermelon, Pear, Cucumber & Mint Cooler The combination of watermelon and cucumber makes this juice super-hydrating. Remember that the body is unable to distinguish between hunger and thirst, and in the summer months we can easily pile on the pounds if we turn to food to quench our thirst. This simple juice makes a fragrant, light drink. Pear 1 Cucumber 1/2 Watermelon 1/8 Fresh mint 1 small handful Ice 1 small handful Simply juice the ingredients and pour over ice. As well as the usual ball games, races and sports, here are a few of our favourite activities to try out. Take some water, healthy snacks and a scoreboard and make your very own day of outdoor competition – then head home and treat your pals to a juice break.

Flying high

Whose kite will fly the highest? If you only have one kite, take it in turns to catch the breeze.

Wheely good fun

This is a great race on the flat if you have lots of room away from roads (wide pavements in parks are best, but watch out for pedestrians!). If you only have one or two scooters, take it in turns and use a watch or timer to judge who’s the fastest rider.

Bubble race

Simply stand on the start line and blow! Whose bubble will travel the furthest?

KIDS' CLUB

Grow your own Why not have a go at planting some seeds or plants and looking after your own super veggies and fruits – track their progress over the summer and by the time you go back to school they should be ready to pick and use in a homemade juice or smoothie. Ask an adult to help you to find a sunny spot in the garden, or pick a container with holes at the bottom, add a layer of small stones and some soil. Here are our favourite easy garden growers...

BBB (Bugs Bunny’s bestie)

Wireless beets

Beetroot is a super juice ingredient and really good for you, so make some space for these purple plants in your veggie patch. Sow beetroot seeds or plants 1/2” deep and within six weeks you’ll see the tops of the beetroots emerging from the ground. Beets like nutrient-rich soil, so add some well-rotted compost to the earth before you plant them.

Make sure your soil is free of stones and weeds and sow three seeds per inch, 1/4” deep. It will take about two weeks before the tiny seedlings appear – then carefully remove a few to thin them out and keep mounding up soil around the roots as they grow. After six weeks you should have some sweet, tasty carrots to munch – or make a juice with oranges for a zingy energy drink.

Get squash-ed

One of the most fun fruits to grow is a squash, which comes in a ton of shapes and sizes. Choose mini varieties which will take up less room as they develop. Sow five or six seeds in a mound of earth and, as the seedlings appear, thin to the strongest plant. These will take longer to grow and will be ready to pick at harvest time, so keep watching and then use them in a tasty autumn recipe from Jason's Super fast Food cook book.

KIDS' CLUB

Take the taste test

Ask an adult to blend fruit and vegetables into two or three juices. Blindfold your bestie and get them to name as many ingredients as they can. Then swap over and see if your taste buds are as on point as theirs. For an extra-cool version of the game on a hot day, freeze the juices into ice cubes instead. No peeking!

Important information: If you’re cutting fruit, make sure you let an adult know so they can help you and check you’re using the safest tools for the job.

Back at the juicy ranch Fabulous fruit salad

We all know that fruit salad is healthy, but who knew it could also be a work of art? Choose your ingredients according to colour and make yours a fabulous juicy feast for the eyes as well as the taste buds. Melon is great for cutting so use your favourite pastry and cookie cutters for the task to add some amazing shapes to your masterpiece.

Create a winning lollylicious recipe!

Invent your own fabulous fruity lolly and enter Jason’s competition to win a box of Cashew and Coco Simply Nude Bars. Your concoction can be as creative as you want – add strawberries, banana, mango or your favourite fruit. Instagram your frozen masterpiece @jasonvale, tweet it to @juicemaster with the hashtag #lollylicious or email juiced@juicemaster. com with ‘Lollylicious’ in the subject bar, by Friday 18 August. Be kind to your mind Juice Master’s resident yogi, Kenny Ryan, examines how practices such as mindfulness can help you to discover inner peace 56

MIND, BODY & SPIRIT It is very much a buzzword these days. You find your mind to be FULL...FULL...FULL... and then you go and find a mindfulness practice and give yourself something else to do. Have you taken part in a course? Did it feel great at the time under the instruction of the teacher? Did you continue it for a short while afterwards, enjoying various benefits along with a sense of calming? Before long did you grow tired of it and let the practice slip away? Do you now often think guilty thoughts like; I must get back into a mindfulness practice yet in truth you just never quite get round to it, can’t be bothered or does that voice in your head tell you that you have more important things to be doing? The Cambridge English Dictionary describes mindfulness as; ‘the practice of being aware of your body, mind and feelings in the present moment, thought to create a feeling of calm. Mindfulness can be used to alleviate feelings of anxiety and depression,’ it suggests. Is mindfulness necessary as a practice separate from just being naturally at home in and as oneself, I wonder? Patrizia Collard* in her book The Little book of Mindfulness has adapted ten ‘awesome’ tips for beginners. These are shown on the right. The ten reasonably clear and simple points relate to beginning the practice of mindfulness – thank you Patrizia. I do not subscribe to mindfulness as a practice, nor do I necessarily advocate it. Of course it does have its uses, in particular in life do you find yourself at the mercy of your thoughts, mind and emotions? If they bring you repeated anxiety, then the practice of mindfulness will bring you some relief.

Start your mindfulness practice... 1. Develop concentration: focus mind upon the breath. 2. Sit focusing upon the breath for 10-15 minutes daily. Occasionally stop what you are doing and concentrate on breathing for a minute. After two weeks, add in mindful eating and walking to your practice. 3. Practise sitting meditation; mindful breathing in a quiet distraction-free zone. 4. Refrain from being judgemental about performance. 5. Prioritise the practice of mindfulness and be willing to move away from old thought habits. 6. Slow it down. Develop the knack of slowing down. Know that when you are not rushing, you will find many opportunities to be mindful. 7. Be patient, mindfulness takes time. 8. Let go. Be willing to not think of all those things you have to do for ten minutes. Let go of distractions. 9. ‘Have fun,’ Patrizia suggests. Soon you may find you enjoy such peace in this, you may wish to sit forever. 10. Do not accept the excuses you give yourself as to why mindfulness is not for you. The more unable to be still or quiet you are, the more you need mindfulness.

Of mindfulness I will say that as an entry point it can lead to realisation of the freedom and ultimate transcendent state that great masters of yoga, Zen and Taoism have always alluded to. There also is an inherent trap in ‘your practice’ of mindfulness. For now, if you are keen, do some research, develop your practice and I will follow up on this in the next edition of Juiced! magazine. Om shanti, shanti, shanti (peace, peace, peace).

INGREDIENT FOCUS

AloeVera

Despite its spiky appearance, aloe vera is a tropical soother with magical powers to heal our bodies, inside and out. Here’s our guide to the super succulent... The aloe vera plant is known for its spiky succulent leaves, and the colourless gel contained within them. It’s this sticky substance that has been the subject of intense scientific study with regard to its many claimed therapeutic properties. Medicinal use of aloe vera can be traced back 6,000 years to early Egypt, where it was known as the ‘plant of immortality’ and would be presented as a funeral gift to pharaohs. In India, Ayurvedic medicine considers aloe vera to be a Tridoshic ‘hero’ plant that rejuvenates, nourishes and replenishes. Applied topically, aloe vera can be used as a remedy for psoriasis, cold sores and burns, while taken orally it offers a therapy for bowel problems and osteoarthritis. Aloe latex contains strong laxative compounds and it’s this potency and effectiveness that makes aloe vera a plant to be respected and consumed with care. Well-prepared blends and products can make it a beneficial ingredient for our health. Pukka Herbs creates its high-grade Organic Aloe Vera Juice by hand-filleting the leaves to remove the outer green leaf and latex interior, thereby eradicating the plant's bitter aloin.

Aloe vera has become a darling ingredient of clean eating for other great reasons too. It contains sterols – substances that occur naturally in many plants, vegetables, grains, nuts and fruit. These have cholesterollowering properties and are also thought to have an anti-inflammatory effect. New studies have shown that aloe vera even has the potential to be developed as a plant-based, non-toxic, non-hormonal contraceptive! Used carefully, aloe vera has the power to bring a whole new health and taste dimension to our juicy world.

JUICY BEAUTY

At Juicy Oasis, you find yourself a world away from the many pressures and restraints of everyday life. To seal the experience, one of the most liberating and holistic treatments that you can enjoy during your stay is a tantric massage at the retreat’s heavenly haven, Eden Spa. This beautiful and sensual experience is performed by one of Juicy Oasis’ highly experienced and empathetic masseuses. It is available only to women (Jason moans about this rule, a lot! – Ed) and is practised with the receiver entirely naked and, à la Fifty Shades, wearing a blindfold. However, don’t panic (or be disappointed!) but that’s where the comparison ends. Having said that, this unique massage has been designed to take you on any mental journey you wish to explore, so as Fifty Shades as your mind wants to take you... “A woman who came on our retreat mentioned that she hadn’t been touched in a sensual way for more than 25 years,” explains Jason. “Light sensual physical touch is just as important as good nutrition and exercise, which is why we brought this particular blend of soft tantric massage into the retreat experience mix.” The Juicy Oasis soft tantric massage may only be available to women,

and performed by a female masseuse, but the completely safe experience is never taken for granted. The team at Eden Spa is highly practised and sensitive, conscious of how cautious a client may feel before or during the massage. The tantric tradition has grown a reputation as being focused on sex. Yet the tantra texts and practises draw in many different spiritual topics. Eden Spa’s version of the tantric massage is specifically created to take a client on an extraordinary physical and mental journey. It certainly requires an open mind and is designed for the more adventurous and free-spirited amongst us, although Jason is always keen to point out that this can be an integral part of really allowing the retreat to work its maximum magic. This massage is an experience that will enable you to totally unwind, remove your inhibitions and experience something that will transport you away from any stress in the most beautiful way. Eden Spa itself was designed to be a powerfully effective space to de-stress. It is a cocooning, relaxing sanctuary where the most maxed-out client can rest and switch off from everything; ideal for the tantric experience. This quiet area provides a

haven where you can curl up on a lounger and relax to the soothing sounds of water cascading down the spa wall into the large indoor hot pool. Or climb into one of the ceiling-mounted pods and rock until you drift off into a beautiful slumber. Whereas most spas focus on external beauty before addressing the interior, Eden Spa takes a holistic approach with the emphasis on treatments which complement the detox programme. So, if you are planning a visit to Juicy Oasis, don’t forget to check yourself in for what must be one of the most therapeutic forms of massage available anywhere in the world. In fact, it’s a unique experience and surely one to add to your journey of self-growth. Allow the team at Eden Spa to take your mind to a heavenly place and leave your body in a totally blissful state. The Tantric Bliss Massage costs €82 and is available at Juicy Oasis. To find out more and make a reservation at the retreat, call 01234 480 280 or email info@ juicyoasis.com

Q&A

Jason ask

We asked for your questions for the Juice Master and they arrived faster than a Turbo Express Smoothie. Here’s the scoop from Jason... IF YOU COULD CREATE A JUICY RETREAT ANYWHERE, WHERE WOULD IT BE, AND WHY? I have always imagined a retreat on its own private Island. Juicy Island is very much on my long-term plans, but acquiring an island isn’t easy and finding one suitable for what I imagine is an even more daunting task! Why Juicy Island? The total removal of all temptation. I always try to open a retreat in a remote place, but no matter how cut off from the outside world, if you are determined, you can always order a taxi and ‘escape’ from juice camp. However, until Juicy Island becomes a reality, I am building the Juice Ranch in the Algarve in Portugal. Once again it’s extremely secluded and it will be hard to find the nearest town for sure. The Juice Ranch will be our flagship (unless Juicy Island happens!) and will have two lakes, a sports zone, sunset and sunrise yoga platforms, and unique wave pods with their own slide so you can wake up and plunge directly onto the lake! It will also have a spa to truly die for, orange bikes to get around the retreat and the list goes on... it will hopefully be ready mid-2018! IS THERE A FRUIT OR VEGETABLE YOU HAVEN’T CREATED A JUICE FOR? Yes, onions and leeks because they belong anywhere else but in a juice!

62

WE’VE BEEN TOLD WE SHOULD CONSUME 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EACH DAY. HOW MANY DO YOU MANAGE TO EAT? For the vast majority of people this is almost impossible to keep to, which is where juicing comes in. I think, on average, I get around 6-8 portions a day, but again that would never happen if I had to eat them.

ON AN AVERAGE DAY, HOW MANY JUICES DO YOU DRINK? One ‘bad boy’ a day, sometimes two, and of course a cheeky ginger shot. A ‘bad boy’ is a blend featuring all the big juice guns, including apple, spinach, celery, cucumber, lime and mint. This is then blended with some avocados and Powergreens powder

(containing things like wheatgrass, spirulina, barley grass and good bacteria). My routine is that I wake up, grab some water, hit some exercise then have a ‘bad boy' and ginger shot. If the rest of the day goes a little pear shaped, I know I’ve had some über nutrition in liquid form on an empty stomach, making the goodness more bio-available.

Q&A

IS THERE SUCH A THING AS A PERFECT DIET?

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO MAINTAIN WEIGHT LOSS AFTER A JUICE PLAN?

IF I ONLY WANT TO DRINK ONE JUICE FOR 14 DAYS, WHICH ONE SHOULD I CHOOSE?

There are many ways, but I follow my 2-3-2 system: Two days of pure juice. Three days of Low H.I food (Low Human Intervention or clean eating). Followed by two days which are more flexible, as it’s the weekend and we need a life too!

I would recommend either the Turbo Charge Smoothie or the Blood Builder. Both of these have the main nutritional players in the juicing world and both are extremely satiating due to the addition of avocado/good fats.

WHAT DO YOU DO WITH YOUR JUICING PULP? Put it on the compost. FIZZY WATER OR STILL? Still is better for you, but I love naturally sparkling water with lemon. WHEN YOU’RE TRAVELLING HOW DO YOU SURVIVE WITHOUT BEING ABLE TO TAKE A JUICE ON A FLIGHT? I take my Powergreens powder, which is like a ‘Juice On The Go’. Just add water, shake and boom – ready-made nutrition. ARE YOU EVER TEMPTED TO BUY A SUPERMARKET JUICE? Yes, but not often and there are only a couple that do genuine cold press juice. These still go through a HPP process so they are not ideal, but are handy when I’m out and about. It's about getting the best of what's available to you at that time.

WHAT IS YOUR CORE APPLE AND WHY? Golden Delicious, they just seem to be balanced perfectly in terms of taste, not too sharp like Granny Smith apples. However, all tastes are different and with more than 4,000 apple varieties in the world, you can take your pick!

Yes I think so, but sadly it’s only wild animals who manage to stick rigidly to what nature intended their diet to be. The biggest problem we have as humans is that we have intellect and we have overanalysed everything, especially nutrition. You won’t find a dietician in the wild, yet animals somehow seem to know exactly what to eat. This is instinct, and sadly, humans have been so confused by conflicting nutritional information for so many years that we no longer rely on instinct. However, I feel most humans, once they do tap into this amazing resource, instinctively know that fruits, vegetables, natural grains, nuts, seeds and lean proteins are the prefect diet for us. The trouble again is mind and chemical manipulation, which causes addiction and distorts our otherwise instinctive pull towards natural foods.

AS AN EX-SMOKER ARE YOU EVER TEMPTED TO DRAG ON A FAG? Never! I have no desire for anything containing the drug nicotine. Once you know the nature of ‘The Nicotine Trick’ you can’t possibly feel you are missing out because you know you aren’t – it’s all one huge illusion. This is why I hate vaping, patches, gums or anything containing nicotine because they don’t stop the addiction. I am 100 per cent happy to be FREE and it’s why my Stop Smoking app is FREE to help others get FREE, available on iTunes and Google Play.

Dear Jason...
