UPDATES FROM THE WORLD OF JUICING AND BEYOND
Daddy’s JJ, Jason and Katie’s little boy, was one of the first to cast an appreciative eye over his daddy’s brilliant new book, Create Magic, upon its release. The title was given a big thumbs up by Juice Master fans and a raft of celebrities (see page 10!) who raved about Jason’s first non-nutrition, non-addiction book that shot straight to the top of the Amazon chart. With the publication, Jason has established a Create Magic Fund, with ten per cent of profits from book sales going towards helping others to experience more magic. At the time of writing, the two Golden Tickets, to win a stay at Juicy Oasis and Juicy Mountain, which Jason had inserted in two paperback copies of Create Magic, have yet to be claimed – which means there’s plenty more magic waiting to be made…
Create Magic is available on Amazon or check out createmagicbook.com for more details.

Creating magic at No 10 Juice Master Jason Vale has plenty of A-list pals, but we were in awe when a copy of his new book, Create Magic, made its way to No 10 Downing Street and, hopefully, offered the Prime Minister an inspiring read. Jason’s good friend Nigel of Secret Hamper, made the special delivery with a handwritten note for Theresa May – we hope you enjoyed the book, PM!
Listen out for a new podcast coming soon from the Juice Master. Launching in spring 2019, The Jason Vale Podcast will launch with a Create Magic series in which Jason interviews guests about what creating magic means to them. First up are The Speakmans and Nigel Richardson of Secret Hamper (see left). Meanwhile, Jason recently chatted with DJ Jo Whiley for a new show, Couch Coach, in which she interviews key figures from the world of health, fitness and nutrition. Tune in to both shows for a dose of healthy inspiration.

#1 magic maker! ‘We all have it within our power to make magic’
It’s already hit the top of the charts, and Jason Vale’s new book is set to create an army of magic makers. We caught up with the Juice Master to discover the inspiration behind Create Magic...
CREATE MAGIC
#1 How magic! When Jason Vale releases a new book or app, it doesn’t take long for the title to soar to the top of the charts – fans know that they can’t go wrong with the latest nutrition or addiction advice from the Juice Master, but when it came to his latest work, he had something rather different to share with readers. Create Magic is Jason’s first-ever nonjuicing, non-addiction book and, having taught us how to conquer our physical health, the new title takes him into a new sphere of personal development to help us tackle our mental health. Of course, in some part, the psychology aspect of Jason’s work has always been present – it’s reflected in the positive, can-do, we’re-in-it-together philosophy which forms the first section of many of his books. Whether it’s adjusting your mindset to want to eat healthier, or quit smoking, Jason has helped millions of people around the world to strengthen their mental muscle to help them prepare to change their health for good. Just like the Juice Master’s commonsense nutritional health advice which switches our thinking from eating to drinking our 5 A DAY, Create Magic reflects a simple way to approach life – if we make magic for others, we make it for ourselves.
12
Three generations of creating magic
It’s the philosophy Jason has always lived by, one instilled into him by his mother and which he hopes to pass to his son, JJ. There are some ‘rules’ about creating magic, to get the right level of surprise and delight, and avoid anticipation (a case of ‘too many bananas’) which kills the magic entirely. The inspiration for Create Magic came at Juicy Oasis, Jason’s retreat in Portugal. “I’m always obsessed with the details, especially at our retreats,” explains Jason. “I honestly believe your life is a direct result of what you feed yourself, and I don’t just mean what goes in your mouth, but also what you watch, read and listen to. It’s one of the reasons we created Juiced! magazine for people to read during their stay, so that what goes in mentally inspires you. “We also have a library at the retreats with books that have inspired me over
the years – titles such as Notes From A Friend by Tony Robbins, Eat That Frog! by Brian Tracy and Who Moved My Cheese? by Dr Spencer Johnson. They take just a few hours to read, but have a powerful impact, and I thought it would be great to write a pocket book about the ‘create magic’ philosophy I’ve lived with for many years to put in the basket every guest at Juicy Oasis receives. “It’s a philosophy I inherited from my mum who was a magic maker of epic proportions and who taught me that when you create magic for others, you automatically get it back for yourself.”
From the heart
Create Magic is a natural extension of the skill and insight into the human psyche that Jason has gathered over 25 years of motivational speaking and, just like everything he does, it comes from the heart. “Create Magic is a book I’ve had in mind for years,” says Jason. “I’ve always focused on physical health, but without good mental health that can fall by the wayside. I’ve been writing about juicing for more than 20 years and the answers to the physical aspect of my work is to be found in those books. “Ultimately we are all natural-born magic makers and this book brings the philosophy to the forefront. I’m not an author, but I like writing and what I put onto paper is real and close to my heart.
It’s automatic to me and my team to make magic for others and there are always two or three people at the retreat on any given week who haven’t paid to be there. The book gives us an opportunity to make this official with the launch of a Create Magic Fund, whereby ten per cent of the profits of the book will be used to make even more magic for more people.”
WHO ARE JASON’S MAGIC MAKERS? We asked the Juice Master who has created magic in his life…
Force for good
Having already created magic for so many, including mother and daughter Janie and Charlotte whose story is overleaf, Jason wanted to add something extra to the launch of Create Magic, and so – like a magical Willy Wonka – included two golden tickets in the paperback versions of the book, one to win a stay for two at Juicy Oasis and a second pair for Juicy Mountain, Jason’s health retreats. The reaction to the book from celebrities and fans has been phenomenal. “I’ve been really overwhelmed," says Jason, "and it has the potential to create an army of magic makers. People are used to me writing about juicing and addiction and so when you expose yourself and the details of your personal life in something like Create Magic, it can be quite difficult. I found writing about my mum tough, but ultimately the whole process was cathartic. “My aim is for the book to create magic for the reader and inspire them to create magic for others. I want it to become a movement around the world across all aspects of life. There are chapters on business and relationships and, while I’m not an expert in those fields, I know that by challenging yourself to do so, you can create magic for anyone – your child, your partner, colleagues, even complete strangers. The beauty is you can’t lose the magic-making skill – it’s always there, waiting to be unleashed as a force for good.” •
My Kate and JJ... ...who create magic for me every day. I wrote Create Magic in the year JJ was born, and you can’t get a more magic moment than that. I will be so proud if he grows up to become a magic maker too.
Richard Branson ... ...for his sheer excitement at life. His whole philosophy is, 'Have fun, and the money will come'. I love everything Virgin does – I only have to see the logo and it puts me in a good mood.
Tony Robbins...
Ricky Gervais...
...who became an inspirational father figure from afar as I was growing up. His philosophy is, 'Educated or not, don’t keep telling yourself that your story defines you and is why you’re not getting on in life'.
... just because he has been my go-to comedy genius for so many years. Everything he has done – The Office, Extras, Derek – is brilliant. He’s guaranteed to make me laugh, which is pure magic in itself.

MAGIC
made in heaven Last year, Juice Master Jason Vale turned Janie and Charlotte’s Mother’s Day into a life-changing, incredible magic moment Mother’s Day means something different to all of us – for some it is a day of cards, flowers and gifts, a chance to say ‘thank you’ to the #1 woman in our life. But for others it can be a tough day, an occasion easiest ignored. It used to be the case for Jason Vale who sadly lost his beloved mother nine years ago. Incredibly close to her, after she lost her fight against cancer, Mother’s Day became acutely painful for him. But, while writing Create Magic in 2018, with the day fast approaching, he had a flash of inspiration and recast his own sadness at not being able to create magic for her by ingeniously thinking how he might make the day super special for someone else’s mum. Jason began to hatch a plan to offer one lucky winner the chance to nominate their mother to win a week at his retreat, Juicy Oasis, simply by explaining why they deserved to win this treat. With several hundred entries, it was tough to pick a winner, but on Sunday 11 March 2018, Jason called Janie Budd to tell her she was headed to Juicy Oasis for a week that would transform her life.
14
Janie from Somerset had been nominated by her daughter Charlotte, who described her as, ‘My absolute angel and inspiration’. Most of us consider our mums to be one in a million, but when Jason read Charlotte’s words, he felt a resonance between their story and his own. Charlotte explained that Janie, a single mother to three children, had lost her partner to cancer and was currently battling breast cancer for a second time. Charlotte had discovered Juice Master and Juicy Oasis while researching health retreats, which she desperately wanted to take her mum to, but couldn’t hope to afford for a few years. Although Janie had endured tough times, Charlotte described her as a strong and positive person, writing: ‘Please don’t take this as a sob story because we are all so positive and have each other in life which is enough to keep her happy, but mum is kind and puts everyone else first even on her toughest days, so I would love to be able to give something as amazing as she is back to her on Mother’s Day’.

We have a winner!
With tears in his eyes, Jason knew Janie and Charlotte were the winners of his Mother’s Day competition and called Janie to break the news. “At first, I was a bit confused,” says Janie. “I knew nothing about the competition, but Charlotte called and said, ‘You’re going to get a call from a withheld number, just answer it’. Almost immediately I got a second call and when I answered, a voice said, ‘I’m Jason Vale and I’m ringing you because Charlotte thinks you deserve a bit of magic’. “Charlotte had got me following Juice Master on social media a couple of months earlier, and when I realised it
was Jason Vale calling, I was instantly in tears. Charlotte rang back and we were both screaming with excitement.” “Life has been rough for mum," says Charlotte, "and when I saw the competition I entered straight away as I love my mum so much. I came across Jason while researching retreats and I thought it would be perfect for mum as Juicy Oasis treats mind, body and soul, and I told mum we’d get there one day.”
Destination paradise
Having been given the golden opportunity to enjoy a week at Juicy Oasis as Jason’s guests, Janie and
J anie has undergone treatment for breast cancer twice, supported by her daughter Charlotte, who entered her into Jason's Mother's Day competition to win a stay at Juicy Oasis
was glowing from the juices, exercise and all-round positivity that we experienced. She’s a changed woman.” “I am a new woman,” adds Janie. “As I left, I said to Jason I would give him my last penny if he needed it. He made me believe I could live again. The cancer and grief of losing my partner weighed me down and I couldn’t see the point of fighting anymore.
Charlotte couldn’t wait for their trip, which was planned for late autumn. “By the time of our trip, I had finished radiotherapy and chemotherapy," says Janie. “I had terrible joint pain, but after the retreat it was so much better and in a couple of months I think I won’t need medication. In my head, I’ve finished with treatment. “Before we went, we’d discussed that this was the start of my new life and I was determined I’d embrace every aspect of the week. Along with the delicious juices and soups, I was in the gym every morning, I tried rebounding, yoga, spinning classes and even a dip in the lake. I had a go at anything I thought my body could cope with. “When I met Jason at the start of the week, I told him I was a broken woman. With the cancer I felt I had
lost myself. I just wanted to be well again. I am a spiritual person and I had always wanted to try yoga, but in the first class I couldn’t sit on the floor and cross my legs. I burst into tears as I felt so frustrated my body wouldn’t do what I wanted it to do. By the third day of classes I could feel a change and by Friday I could cross my legs! It was such a small achievement but it meant everything to me.” “In 25 years, I have never seen mum in a gym,” laughs Charlotte. “It was just incredible to see how much the week changed her entire outlook. I like going to the gym and being active, but Juicy Oasis was so much more than I expected. I threw myself into it and I felt amazing – I lost 6lbs by the end of the week. The best part was that mum
“Now I feel like the real Janie is returning. I juice every morning and take my ginger and turmeric shot. I cook Jason’s Super fast Food recipes and I’ve joined a local health club where I can swim and use the gym. “We’ve booked to go back to Juicy Oasis next year. There’s so much I want to do and live for, and cancer’s not going to get me. Every day I want to write to Jason, and I sit and think how I will repay him for everything that he has done for me.” “When I said goodbye to Jason, I couldn’t explain how much winning the competition meant to me,” says Charlotte, “but I know now. He’s given me my mum back, and that’s the best Mother’s Day gift anyone could ever give to both of us.” •
Will you be this year’s Mother’s Day winner? Janie and Charlotte’s story shows how much magic one generous act can create and, having seen the impact it made to their lives, Jason is set to wave his magic wand again on Mother’s Day on 31 March. Watch out for details on Juice Master’s social-media channels, listed on page 3.

JUICY INTERVIEW
northern STA R
As she starts a major new role, Juiced! magazine caught up with actress Angela Griffin after her annual Juicy Oasis reboot
There’s a buzz of excitement in Boston, Lincolnshire on a sunny morning in early November. Hollywood has come to town and actress Angela Griffin and Rob Lowe are on location shooting an edgy new crime drama, Wild Bill.
Back in London, next day, Angela has time to chat with Juiced! magazine about her career, love of Juicy Oasis, health and nutrition before a catchup over lunch with friend and actress Tamzin Outhwaite.
While the former Brat Pack actor is in familiar territory, humouring every selfie and signature request, even when it interrupts filming, Angela is keen to crack on. Whether it’s an eye on the looming stormy skies above, a keenness to get on with the job in hand or the hope to get home to her gorgeous family – husband Jason Milligan, daughters Tallulah, 14, Melissa, 11, and canine Insta-star Cavapoo Smith – in the capital, her no-nonsense nature nudges the former West Wing star back into character and the cameras roll.
Filming, family and friends, it’s the perfect combination for the girl from Leeds who first became a household name as feisty hairdresser Fiona Middleton in Coronation Street, at a time when the long-running soap's weekly omnibus regularly attracted around 20m viewers. While soaps have been the make or break for many actors, Angela smoothly transitioned to TV drama with roles in Holby City, Cutting It (where she met friend Amanda Holden) and later

Waterloo Road. Lewis, the Inspector Morse spin-off, took Angela into new crime-drama territory as DS Lizzie Maddox and, last year, across the pond to Canada to record The Detail.
zone, swapping a detective’s forensics report for a reporter’s notepad and pen as editor-in-chief of the Boston Stump, a role she describes as, “a Northern Rebekah Brooks”.
She has also had several stints at presenting, hosting her own live daytime show, Angela and Friends, on Sky1, and more recently as a semiregular presenter on The One Show. Acting is, without doubt, her first love, and her new role as Lisa Cranston in Wild Bill sees Angela back in the crime
With more filming for Wild Bill ahead, and recent promotional work for the UK broadcast of The Detail, which saw Angela step out of Lewis’ shadows into the lead role of Detective Stevie Hall, life is incredibly busy for the actress, and Hollywood seems an inevitable next stop.
JUICY INTERVIEW
ANGELA'S ANGLE... “I love being paid to travel,” says Angela. “The kids love it too and it’s great they are now at an age where they are interested in visiting places. We’ve been doing some city breaks recently – last weekend we were in Berlin and this weekend we’re in Brighton, and we’ve visited Amsterdam and Italy as a family, last year. “When I was filming The Detail in Toronto, Jason and the girls came out to visit and I flew back in between – we try not to go more than three weeks without seeing each other and family is the most important thing. “We all loved Canada, which I think combines the best of British and North American culture, and if the show had continued, I think we might have considered a more permanent move.” The opportunity for Angela to spread her wings and leave behind the roles that have made her a household name is tempting, although she has spoken of a potential return to Coronation Street to reprise her role as Fiona for which she won a National Television Award in 1995. “I feel really lucky to have got to where I am and I still feel every job is going to be my last," says Angela. “I don’t come from a privileged background or an acting family and I feel blessed to have made a career out of performing. I loved crossing the pond and it is refreshing to be judged on my acting alone rather than having made my name as a Northern, working-class soap star. “However, I’ve always said that if the scriptwriters on Corrie came up with a great storyline, I might be tempted to go back. I enjoy presenting but in the UK we are quick to put people into boxes, so I have to be careful to keep the balance between hosting and acting.
“I do like taking risks and challenging myself, although I would never do reality television – I don’t like anyone mucking around with my food!” With balance and nutrition in mind, Angela is a big fan of an annual stay at Juicy Oasis where she has time to reboot mentally, physically and nutritionally. Having enjoyed two stays at the retreat with celebrity girlfriends Amanda, Tamzin and Nicola Stephenson, her most recent trip with husband Jason was a very different experience during which the couple enjoyed spending time hanging out with Juice Master Jason Vale. “When I visit with the girls we go to reboot and carve out some precious ‘me time’,” says Angela. “We tend to sit around and natter, but during this trip with Jason we were full-on doing everything, all the classes and walks. I think my husband liked seeing me so chilled out! I do like going with the girls though and I think next year he’ll go with his friends and I’ll go back with them, it’s a real bonding experience. “I love spending time at Juicy Oasis and you know that you are 100 per cent guaranteed going to leave feeling better. There’s no cheating and, as a selfconfessed control freak, I like having control taken away from me. “As a woman, wife and mother I am constantly worrying about other people, but when I’m at Juicy Oasis I can switch off, focus on me and let someone else take care of helping me to clear my mind and system, and recharge my body. There are so many things to juggle every day but at Juicy Oasis you relinquish control and come back refreshed and ready to go again.”
On juicing.. “I always juice all day on a Monday, particularly if I’ve had a massive weekend! On other days I juice at least once a day, usually in the morning, so at least I know I’ve got my veggies in and some good nutrition in my body for a minimum of one of my meals each day. As a family we enjoy good food and are also really into healthy eating at home.” On ordering Juice Master Delivered… “Sometimes I order a 3-Day Detox and I really love it. It’s a luxury but it’s so worth it. When you’ve invested in it you feel committed to following the plan, plus I don’t have to do the washing-up, so it’s a real win-win!” On looking good… “There's loads in my beauty bag and it's hard to single out must-have products. My hair needs moisture to look good and I use a Paul Mitchell leave-in conditioner. I also try to do a restorative mask each week. For my skin, I do see a dermatologist and they recommended CeraVe, a really good non-comedogenic cleanser and moisturiser available at Boots, which suits my skin.”

“ I’m a nosy bugger but I love being able to put across my point of view on the blog and air my thoughts on subjects such as women’s rights”
at Juicy Oasis, Angela shared how much the detox means to her on Instagram, writing, ‘Lots of parents here and everyone is missing their kids but we all know that the happy, rested, healthy parents that will be returning home will be much more use. The nutritional knowledge that we take home with us will help our kids too. Less convenience food, more low-intervention food, fresh food, cooking from scratch and juices with loads of veg sneaked in but without being able to taste it’. Angela’s honest approach to juggling it all and balancing her own ambitions while being a strong, stylish female role model and brilliant mum is evident in both her social media posts and blog, Angela’s Angle (angelasangle.co.uk) where she regularly shares her views. “I quite enjoy social-media,” says Angela. “I’m a nosy bugger but I love being able to put across my point of view on the blog and air my thoughts

on subjects such as women’s rights. I think everyone should be fighting for equality and fairness. I don’t want to be a role model and I’m the first to admit I get it wrong on occasion, but I think it’s OK to show that you can f*** it up and it’s not the end of the world.” Sharing the things that are important to her – from her favourite juice recipes (Juice Master’s The Green God and Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup), to her worries as a mother and about where her next role will come from – she is candid, funny and open about the fact that even celebrities have worries. Whether you see her as a Northern, working-class child actress that made it big, or consider her a stylish, sophisticated and skilled performer who has proved her talent and now has Hollywood beckoning, Angela has the determination to achieve whatever she sets her sights on. And that’s a star quality we can all aim to follow. •
Have you had your S*ITAMINS? Almost half of us have one every day, but are synthetic vitamins worth taking?
26
HEALTH AND NUTRITION
It’s vitamins season, and everywhere you look the manufacturers of pills, potions and effervescent tablets are on a mission to ensure you get all of your Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs). Advertisements, promotions and 3-for-2 offers all aim to get you to buy their ‘super boosters’. It’s estimated that almost half of us take a vitamin or mineral supplement every day, fuelling an industry worth more than £400m in the UK alone. Although we tend to think of vitamins as a modern-day phenomenon, they were discovered in 1912 by scientist Casimir Funk, who coined the term ‘vitamine’ and proposed the idea that ailments such as scurvy could be cured with nutrients. Early vitamin B supplements, derived mainly from yeast, claimed to improve appetite, aid digestion, correct constipation, clear the skin, increase energy and promote weight gain. Even then, the medical profession was dismissive and an article in the 1922 Journal of the American Medical Association dismissed such claims as, ‘Extravagant and misleading’. Despite this, vitamins for added ‘vim, vigor and pep’ perpetuated through the 20s and 30s, culminating in Franklin D. Roosevelt’s government creating the first RDAs, to address the malnourishment of soldiers at the start of WWII. The first One-A-Day vitamin appeared in 1943 and the industry hasn’t looked back since.
GOOD FOR YOU?
Yet recent research by Dr Giles Yeo, presented in a BBC Horizon documentary, Vitamin Pills: Miracle or Myth?, challenged claims by many manufacturers, particularly around the effect of antioxidant supplements on our health. He questioned whether we should be taking vitamins when few of us fall into the groups that
governments recommend should supplement their diet. It’s a philosophy that Juice Master Jason Vale shares, particularly given that by simply improving our diet and intake of fresh fruits and vegetables we can gain all the nutrients our bodies need from natural whole-food sources. Natural nutrients found in whole foods can help to prevent a wide range of chronic diseases. The bottom line is that synthetic nutrients are made artificially in a laboratory or factory and although they emulate the way plants and animals create them, they can never be organic in quite the same way. Additionally, we do not know how well our bodies absorb and use synthetic nutrients. Some studies have shown that multivitamins have no effect on our health, while fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K may be stored in the body and can be potentially harmful.
NATURE’S FINEST
By contrast, natural vitamins are derived from whole foods – look for ‘100 per cent natural’ labelling and check the packet’s food source which should clearly be plant or animalbased. Words that end in ‘ide’ or ‘ate’ – such as chloride or nitrate – indicate the vitamin is synthetic. Although natural vitamins may carry a premium in price, they are derived from and therefore more closely linked to the whole-food source that they come from. First and foremost we should look to eat a well-balanced healthy diet to get the vitamins and minerals that our bodies need, but if you are struggling or need to enhance your intake of the good stuff for a short period of time, look closely at the label and ensure the substitute you choose is the closest to nature that it can possibly be. Only then should you consider that the ‘magic pills’ really are worth popping. •

H.I. LIVING
Read any good food labels lately? Unrecognisable ingredients, stabilisers, preservatives‌ If packaging leaves you stumped, simply ask yourself how far has a human intervened with the food in your basket?
HEALTH AND NUTRITION
A week of nothing but freshly extracted juice is a fantastic start to a healthier you, but – a little like those New Year’s resolutions we are tempted to make – sticking to the plan and making positive long-term changes to our diet to improve our wellbeing can be tricky to master. Luckily, Juice Master Jason Vale has mapped the way ahead with the sound advice found at the outset of most of his books. Should you be fortunate enough to stay at one of his incredible retreats, it’s the plan of action you’ll receive as you pack up your bags and leave behind a lifechanging break you’ll never forget.
WHAT DO I EAT NOW?
It’s the question Jason is most often asked after someone has detoxed. Long-term improvement is what we’re after. In fact, scientists have shown that when we consistently commit to doing something for 21 days or longer it gets hardwired into our brain and nervous system, making what was once effort, automatic. So it makes sense that when we set about changing our diet, we treat our body respectfully and sensibly. If you have detoxed for seven days, your stomach may have shrunk slightly, your metabolism may take a while to get up to speed and your body may be sensitive to ‘junk’ and unable to cope with ‘normal’ volumes of food. But there’s no need to panic, the easy way to eat healthily is, according to the Juice Master, right in front of us.
DON’T READ THE LABEL
For many years, the food industry and health organisations in the UK got uptight about ‘labelling’ food. Traffic lights, colour coding, pie charts and graphs were all suggested and laboured over as the ‘best’ way to advise consumers on what to eat.
fruits and vegetables – salads, soups, juices, blends proteins – low H.I. fish, meat, nuts, seeds good grains quinoa, couscous, rice junk because we're all human after all
Try the low H.I. way of life “For years I was asked, ‘What am I looking for on the label?’” says Jason. “It took me many years to realise that the problem was the label!” The simple truth is that the very foods which feed our bodies best don’t require packaging – fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, seeds and lean proteins don’t need a label. In fact, ‘no label’ food is what wild animals consume, and if the food industry hadn’t manipulated and chemicalised our food, it’s what we would be eating too. Labels incorporate a ton of marketing-speak – from misleading sugar-free (read ‘with added artificial sweeteners’), fat-free (but packed with sugar) and no artificial colours or flavours (although plenty of fat and sugar), to cutesy farm names implying the product was lovingly grown in a pretty field in the countryside, rather than massproduced in an industrial factory.
GO LOW
Keep it simple by opting for ‘no label’ ingredients – if you can grow, fish or hunt it on a desert island, it’s likely to be ‘no label’. Another approach is to consider how far a human has interfered with the items in your basket. An orange picked from a tree rather than a muffin laced with sugar, fat and ingredients to extend its shelf life. Or a piece of fish packed with healthy omega oils, compared with a ‘finger’ of indistinguishable fish pieces wrapped in breadcrumbs. Of course we are all human, and the key to long-term healthy eating is balance. To help keep this front of mind, Jason has devised a simple weighting system (see above) to use when shopping and planning meals. The Low H.I. Way of Life should steer what we put on our plate and into our body to ensure that we give it the best chance to function properly and to feel as amazing as we do long after we've completed our detox plan. •

40 acres to explore
An amazing yoga deck in the making
Juicy Oasis and Juicy Mountain are nothing short of life-changing and always in BIG demand, so you can bet your blender that when Juice Master Jason Vale rolled out the plans for his new retreat, dubbed Juicy Escape, they were nothing short of spectacular. The 40-acre site is set to be transformed over the next year.
Hanging with the crew (l-r): João, Joaquim, Sérgio, Jason, Jacinto, António
There’s even an outdoor classiccar cinema – the perfect place to catch a movie as the sun goes down. It’s the only spot you’ll find a car and so Jason is planning to furnish guests with a bicycle to get around the retreat, once the builders finish up. We can’t wait to book a stay and see all that Juicy Escape has to offer – watch this space for future updates…
Joining the construction crew in Portugal, Jason shared his vision with Juiced! magazine. Among the ideas for the retreat – which will dish up the same top-notch nutrition and fitness programmes – are a sport zone with a running track, custom throwball pitch, tennis court with viewing deck, beach volleyball court and a boxing ring.

REAL LIFE JUICER
I LOST
100lbs IN A YEAR
Super juicer Stephanee Neshek has transformed her life and wants to inspire you to do the same and make 2019 your best year ever Juice Master Jason Vale always says juicing, losing weight and feeling good are choices available to all of us, and Stephanee Neshek (follow her on instagram.com/chickatthegym) would agree. In less than a year, Stephanee, 37, transformed her life and she believes anyone can do the same with effort and self-determination. The American super juicer, who lives in Melbourne Beach, Florida with her professional baseball-player husband, Pat, and children, Hoyt, 4, Shae, 3, and Skye, 20 months, committed to a programme of juices, blends and daily exercise for exactly a year. It’s a plan she says she finds easy while juggling the busy demands of her young family, often single-handedly as Pat is away for 80 of the 162 games in the Major League Baseball season. After the birth of the couple’s fourth child (sadly, the Nesheks' eldest son, Gehrig, died shortly after he was born), Stephanee found herself at her heaviest and lowest point having gained weight with each of her pregnancies.
32
“I had always been really active before having children, running marathons and staying fit. I met Jason Vale in 2006 and had tried his 7-day challenge. Thirteen weeks into my first pregnancy, I was suddenly unable to workout and I started to eat badly, quickly gaining around 70-80lbs. “At the time, I didn’t think too much about it and figured I would lose the weight after the baby was born but, having my second son just 18 months later, I never lost the weight and as each of my pregnancies were considered high risk, I couldn’t exercise. “Things snowballed and by my third pregnancy with Shae, two years later, I figured I would try to get back to being more active, but I fell pregnant with Skye just six months later. Between my first and last delivery, I had been expecting for four and a half years and I ended up 120lbs heavier than I had been on my wedding day.

“Throughout 2017, I tried to exercise and get organised with meal prepping, but I hurt my shoulder and got pneumonia, both of which put me off track. By the end of the year, my sister and I were baking for the holidays and eating lots of sweet things – she runs marathons so while she could get away with it, I continued to pile on the pounds.
NEW YEAR, NEW START
“With New Year just ahead, I thought about Jason’s book and figured I would do his 7-day plan. Ahead of this, I quit coffee as I was drinking around eight to ten cups a day, as I figured that’s what busy moms do to keep going! “I couldn’t wait and I started Jason’s plan on 2 January as a spur-of-themoment thing with my sister. I lost 20lbs in one week and although I knew it was mainly water weight, it really motivated me to do the 7-day plan again and so I kept repeating it for two months – in fact, I did 64 days straight with just juice. “I started working out with weights and felt I needed a little more, so when I saw Jason’s Super Blend Me! book advertised I pre-ordered it on Amazon. I couldn’t wait for it to arrive at the end of March, which was perfect timing. The blends gave me plenty of energy to maintain my workouts. “Since then, I have just had juices and blends and only about a dozen ‘treat cheat’ meals. I was always plagued by sugar cravings, and those are finally gone. I had a piece of birthday cake when my daughter turned one in April, and it tasted awful! With the blends replacing my old coffee fix, I have so much energy, which I definitely need running around after the kids.”
Having nailed good nutrition with Jason’s juice and blend plans, Stephanee discovered Street Parking (streetparking.com), a simple, doanywhere exercise plan created by a busy mom-and-dad team with a background in the fitness industry. “It fits perfectly alongside,” says Stephanee. “With Jason’s books I was getting great nutrition from his recipes, and I could do workouts at home in my own time. With three blends a day plus healthy snacks to fill me up, I found a combination that worked for me. “Before, I had always felt that I was sacrificing time with the kids when I exercised, but this time I made a commitment to myself to stick with it and I became a better mom and wife, and my mood improved too. I worked out every single day, whether it was 20 minutes in the garage hitting the weights, an hour doing yoga or just going for a walk.”
100LBS DROPPED
By June, after six months of sticking solidly to her daily plan, Stephanee had lost a whopping 90lbs, with a further 10lbs weight reduction over the following months of 2018. But her results represent more than an incredible number on the scales. “I’ve stopped weighing myself now,” says Stephanee, “and it’s more about how I feel, which is pretty good! “My clothes look so much better and one of the best moments was going out to buy new workout gear, as my old outfits were too big. I hadn’t bought a swimming costume since college and I’m now confident to wear one. I’m proud to be in our family photos and not hide myself behind the kids. I’ve been asked if I’m a personal trainer and when I saw some friends after eight months, they didn’t recognise me.

Jason's blends really helped the most and I sometimes think, ‘What if Super Blend Me! hadn’t been published when it was? What would I have done?’” Having completely transformed her health and fitness in a year, what’s next for Stephanee? “I’m sticking to the blends and juices to the end of the year, and when New Year comes I plan to find some healthy recipes to start building on what I’ve achieved so

A great start...
Antioxidant Berry Blast This is it: the super blend of all super blends. If this doesn’t rock your taste buds, nothing will. Berries are widely regarded as the antioxidant ‘kings’ of the fruit world and none more so than the new berry on the block – goji! The most nutritionally dense fruit on earth, they are rich in vitamin C, vitamin B12, vitamin A, iron, selenium and many other antioxidants – it is said they contain twice as many antioxidants as blueberries. If you can’t get hold of all the berries in question, you can make do with just one type or whatever you have at hand. However, for full nutritional and taste value, stick to the recipe if you can. The almond milk tones down the sweetness beautifully and makes for one of the creamiest blends you’ll ever taste. If it’s a nice fruit boost you want first thing, then this little baby is what you’re looking for.
Serves 2 Almond or seed milk 500ml/18fl oz Dates (Medjool are best) 4 Goji berries 20g or 2 small handfuls Blackberries 80g or 2 small handfuls Blueberries 40g or 2 small handfuls Raspberries 40g or 2 small handfuls Ice a few cubes Remove the hard ends and stones from the dates and chop. Add all of the ingredients to the blender and blast for 30-60 seconds. Use fresh or frozen berries, skipping the ice if frozen.

Avocado, mint, Fennel & Edamame Salad with a Ginger, honey & yoghurt Splash For me, avocado is the world’s number-one superfood. It’s so rich, so creamy and yet mind-blowingly nutritious that it should be a staple in everyone’s diet. In fact, the avocado alone brings to the table in excess of 25 nutrients including vitamins A, B, C, E and K, copper, iron, phosphorous, magnesium and potassium. The addition of fresh mint, fennel, ginger and honey takes this already delicious dish to a fragrant new level, where your taste buds and body will forever wish to remain.
Peel the ginger, chop and place in the small mixing container of a hand blender, Retro Super Blend or 'bullet’style blender. Add the yoghurt and honey, mix for about 20 seconds.
For the salad Avocado (ripe) 1 large Sugar snap peas or mangetout 60g or 1 handful Fresh mint 20g or 1 small handful Baby leaf spinach 100g or 2 large handfuls Olive oil 1 tbsp Fennel seeds 1 tbsp Olives (pitted) 70g or 1 large handful Edamame beans 60g or 1 handful Cut the avocado in half, remove the stone, scoop out the flesh and cut into nice large chunks. Remove the ends and the stringy spines from the sugar snap peas/mangetout. Remove the leaves from the mint and discard the stalks. Put the mint, spinach and sugar snap peas/mangetout into a bowl, along with the olive oil and fennel seeds and mix. Place the salad onto the plates and add the avocado, olives and edamame beans, then drizzle with the dressing.

Dinner is served!
Butternut Squash, Chilli, Lime & Coconut Curry on a Bed of Cauliflowerʻ Rice’ Cauliflower ‘rice’ is an alternative for anyone who, for whatever reason, wants something a little different to traditional rice. Cauliflower contains vitamins B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid), B6 (pyridoxine) and B9 (folic acid), as well as omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin K. It serves as a good source of protein, phosphorus and potassium. All of which add up to a good reason to try it, plus it tastes pretty delicious too. You can alternatively use regular rice, cooked according to packet instructions. This curry has a kick in all the right places without being too overpowering and is the perfect hot dish for a cold winter’s night.
42
Remove the green leaves from the cauliflower and cut into quarters. Place in a food processor and pulse until the cauliflower is broken down and resembles cooked rice. If you don’t have a food processor, you can do this in small batches using a hand blender, Retro Super Blend or 'bullet’-style blender, or grate the cauliflower using the large holes of a traditional grater. Put the olive oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat and then add the cauliflower, salt and pepper and cook for 5 minutes, stirring frequently.
For the curry Butternut squash ½ medium Red onion ½ medium Red chilli 1 medium Garlic 2 cloves Fresh ginger 30g or 2cm x 4cm Coconut oil 1 tbsp Coconut milk 400ml/14fl oz Ground turmeric ½ level tsp Lime (the juice of) 1 Remove the ends from the butternut squash, peel and chop into bite-sized chunks about 1cm x 1cm (discarding seeds). Remove the skin and thinly slice the red onion and garlic. Cut the chilli in half and slice thickly. Peel the ginger and cut into pieces the size of matchsticks. Put the coconut oil in a wok (or large frying pan) and place over a medium heat. Add the butternut squash and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, then add the onion, chilli, garlic and ginger and cook for a further 5 minutes. Next, add the coconut milk, turmeric and lime juice to the pan. Reduce the heat and allow to simmer for a further 10 minutes. Scoop a generous spoonful or two of the ‘rice’ and curry into your bowl and tuck in!

What’s the problem? Sugar What's the solution? Freedom From The Diet Trap book, £12.99 Need a sugar boost? Sugar is a drug which, just like any other, makes the addict feel good with… and empty without. However, unlike the other perfectly legal drugs like cigarettes, white refined sugar doesn't carry a health warning. How long does it take?
Read in a couple of days, advice for a lifetime.
What’s the scoop?
This is not a diet book: it is a book about how to change your life. You will never have to battle mentally or physically with what you eat – or don’t eat – again.
Jason says:
‘We need sugar – but of the right kind! The human body was designed to get its energy from carbohydrates – but carbohydrates which are in their natural state, not ones that have been stripped of their life force… It digests them and then it gradually releases their potential energy into your cells. This does not cause your sugar levels to go sky high and therefore the pancreas does not have to produce tons of insulin. The sugar found in fruit is fructose. The body cannot use fructose as it is, and needs to convert it into usable glucose. The time it takes to convert the fructose into glucose is essential in keeping the blood-sugar levels correctly balanced. Plus, fruit sugar is a whole food. It contains all the enzymes (life force) the body needs for digestion, it is a pure ‘live’ food, it tastes wonderful and also contains fibre, which helps to ‘sweep’ the intestines clean, as well as preventing the sugar being absorbed too rapidly into the bloodstream’. 49 47
What’s the problem? Smoking What's the solution? Stop Smoking in 2 Hours app, FREE
Jason says:
‘The majority of the problem is mental, not physical. The only reason why anybody smokes is to try to get back to the same emotional state they had before they smoked. The pleasure you thought you got from smoking isn’t real. You don’t need to change any aspect of your life – unless you were otherwise going to. You can stop smoking for the purely selfish reason of being a much happier person in life.’

BIG FACTS YELLOW
Bananas are grown in over 100 tropical countries with plants reaching 15m high. The fruits grow in clusters of 50 to 150, with individual bananas grouped in bunches of 10-20, known as ‘hands’. There are hundreds of varieties but two types. The most popular is the yellow, smooth-skinned sweet variety. The larger, green bananas, known as plantains, cannot be eaten raw. On average, in the UK each person eats around 10kg of bananas a year – roughly two a week. Bananas do not like the cold – if kept in the fridge, the enzymes which cause them to ripen are deactivated and the skin blackens while the flesh remains underripe. However, they do freeze well – remove the skin and put them in a freezer bag. They are then perfect blended to make delicious dairy-free ice cream, or used as a creamy ingredient for a smoothie. Ripe mashed bananas can also be used in baked goods in place of oil or butter. They lend a moist, naturally sweet flavour to muffins and cakes.

Bananas are packed with vitamins and minerals, including vitamins B6, C and A, folate, manganese, potassium, niacin and iron. CARBOHYDRATE
Everyone has seen professional athletes reaching for a banana and that’s because they are full of fast-acting ‘good’ carbohydrates. They contain natural sugars and starch which are primary sources of energy. Not only do they give a much-needed boost of energy and improve endurance, they also help restore the body's glycogen levels, which helps rebuild damaged muscles and has anti-inflammatory benefits. This makes this super yellow fruit a great food to have both before a workout for energy and after to aid recovery.
The high fibre content of bananas promotes a feeling of fullness and soothes the gastrointestinal trace. They are a good source of pectin – a soluble fibre – which is known to lower cholesterol and regulate bowel function. However, as the banana ripens, the pectin starts to break down, which makes the fruit softer. Studies have shown that those who have both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes can benefit from consuming high-fibre diets.

How to look
20 years younger When the Daily Mail asked for nominations of women who look amazing for their years, Lorraine Stanton was on the newspaper’s ‘hot list’. Part of her secret – juicing and a stay at Juicy Mountain… We all want to look and, more importantly, feel younger than we are, but lucky Lorraine Stanton passes for a woman not just ten, but 20 years younger than her current 54 years. The management consultant, who works in the hospitality and catering sector and is mum to Victoria, 18 and Oliver, 15, is the first to admit that good genes play their part, but she also has a few tricks up her sleeve to help maintain her smooth skin, lustrous hair and slim figure. An all-natural girl, Lorraine has model looks but her down-to-earth attitude and zest for life are evidently part of her secret for staying young. Having enjoyed a stay at Juicy Mountain, Jason Vale’s amazing rustic retreat in Turkey, Lorraine says good nutrition including a daily ginger shot and reinvigorating juices are all part of her feel good, look good regime. Juiced! magazine caught up with Lorraine ahead of her upcoming return visit to the magic mountain to get the scoop on her anti-ageing routine.

On being selected by the Daily Mail… “The newspaper asked for nominations of everyday women who look amazing for their age, and a PR contact who I know sent in some pictures of me before telling me I had been shortlisted! My first reaction was, ‘You’re having a laugh!’, but to be selected as one of four women across the UK was flattering. I was invited to London for a pamper session and photoshoot which was really good fun. The kids were very proud, and when I told my husband, he replied, ‘Well, you are gorgeous for your age',” (*melts*, Ed)
On mindset… “I’m a vibrant person and I always try to stay positive and keep my energy levels going – I’m known for being the person who makes everyone happy. Mindset is important and I think you’ve got to remember to smile every day.”
On juicing… “I start every day with a ginger shot which instantly makes me feel better – it gives me a real zing and if I’m feeling sluggish it bucks me up and gets me going. At least once a week I will juice, often more, and if I need something refreshing, I tend to go for Jason’s Lemon-Aid which my kids love – they couldn’t believe it doesn’t contain any sugar. Or, if I’m a bit tired, I like a juice with berries and cucumber, and I’ll add some supergreens – I tend to custom mix what I like.”
On age…

“Approaching 50 was a gulp moment. My younger sister, who I was close to, died at 48 – it was a heartbreaking moment and a real wake-up call. I’ve lost five people close to me over the past couple of years and it makes you think differently about life. I enjoy being this age, but it’s still a shock when people say I'm 54. It’s a cliché, but I believe age is just a number.”

On diet… “We eat together as a family every night and there are lots of veggies in our diet, predominantly with white meat and fish. I always cook from fresh and I’m known for my healthy dinner parties. Of course there are biscuits in the house too, but we try to eat a balanced diet.”
On beauty… “I grew up in humble beginnings and my mum, who had psoriasis, used Astral cream, but if we had no money she would use olive oil. It’s something that’s stuck with me and in winter I put it on my face and body to moisturise my dry skin. I soak my hands and feet weekly and wear gloves and socks overnight.”
On body confidence… “I’m 5ft 1” and weight goes on and comes off but you learn to adapt and love your body, wobbly bits and all. I’ve had two children, both by caesarean, and consequently I have a tummy – I’ve been as light as 84lbs, but it’s still there and I’ve learned to be happy with who I am.”
On supplements… “If my schedule is crazy, I take a supergreens supplement and vitamin D in the winter months.”
On style… “I always wear bright colours and like to stay on trend but look smart. My daughter says I look sassy!”
58
On exercise…
It's only Fern Britton!
“I’m doing more cycling lately and I’ve done a few charity rides, one in aid of the UK Sepsis Trust after two close friends were affected badly by the condition. Every Monday morning, I meet my friend and we play tennis with her mum and mother-in-law who are in their 70s. They are amazing and such an inspiration, they keep us on our toes for two hours. As I get older, I think we need to listen to our bodies and it’s something ladies don’t always want to hear. Exercise is more important to stay strong and healthy.”
On Juicy Mountain… “A friend suggested we go as she knows how hard I work, and my first reaction was, ‘I’m not a retreat person’. She explained that you can do as little or as much as you want and when I got there I loved it. I tried everything including yoga classes, rebounding overlooking the mountain, and morning walks. I loved the juices and as we were there in May we had a bowl of soup at the end of the evening. I was never hungry, but I can remember the absolute pleasure when we enjoyed fresh tomatoes picked from the vine – the taste of real food was incredible and it made me resolve to savour everything I eat. We have booked to go back to Juicy Mountain – it’s very much a girly time, our time, just for us. I can’t wait!”

Brilliant for mind, body and soul, it’s an activity that gets you out in the fresh air for a good dose of vital vitamin D and tests your physical fitness and endurance. So how can you ensure you make the most of every precious minute on the slopes without losing time nursing aching limbs and stiff joints after a first day on the snow? There’s plenty you can do before you grab your skis – from everyday exercises such as walking and swimming to improve endurance, to strengthening workouts for your legs.

MIND, BODY AND SPIRIT
SMARTEN UP YOUR CV
Skiing is an excellent cardiovascular (CV) workout, getting your heart pumping and improving aerobic endurance. Before you head to the slopes, start a programme of interval training, mixing small bursts of high-intensity cardio activities, such as sprinting for a minute or so, with two minutes of low-intensity exercise, such as walking. Doing this for half an hour will replicate a session on the slopes – your heart will be pumping and muscles burning as you thunder downhill before walking to the lifts to ride up and go again.
GIVE ME 20!
Get your skis on and you will find yourself in a constant squat position, working your inner and outer thighs, hamstrings, quads and glutes. Constant twisting and turning means you use virtually every muscle in your legs, and your knees and hips will be put through their paces. Prep your quads with three to four sets of 20 squats as often as you can – add a set as you brush your teeth or while waiting for the kettle to boil. Add in squat jumps and wall squats to build endurance and lunges to promote balance.
BE A POSER
A weekly yoga or Pilates class might seem a sedate way to prep for a high-adrenaline ski session, but it is perfect for building strength, flexibility and poise – all essential on the piste. For a boost to your core strength include a daily plank which also benefits the muscles around your lower back and abs, essential for fast turns on challenging terrains.
UPLIFTING EXPERIENCE
Skiing is fantastic for your mental-health too. The scenery can be awe-inspiring, the adrenaline will be pumping and the sense of achievement huge, no matter what your level. Spending time in nature is beneficial to our mental wellbeing – and exposure to the cold can boost the body’s fat-burning abilities.

CBD OIL
Its use can be controversial, but the growing evidence supporting the health benefits of CBD oil, derived from cannabis, cannot be ignored
In the past year, the medicinal use of CBD oil has never been far from the headlines. Its benefits are said to be far-reaching – from relieving chronic pain and tackling mental-health conditions to treating the symptoms of long-term chronic conditions such as multiple sclerosis and epilepsy. The laws surrounding the use of cannabis-derived products for medicinal purposes are complex and changing all the time and almost all remain controlled substances under the Misuse of Drugs Act. However, the use of CBD oil is legal in the UK as it contains less than 0.2 per cent of the psychoactive ingredient THC, which is what gives recreational users their high. Cannabis plants are made up of more than 100 different cannabinoids of which CBD – or cannabidiol as it is known – is one. It is derived from hemp oil made from pressing hemp leaves and flowers. In the past year, the number of people turning to it as an alternative remedy for a host of conditions has grown hugely and CBD oil is now readily available on the high street as a food supplement. However, experts advise looking for an organic, full-spectrum CBD oil if possible, as these contain phytonutrients, essential fatty acids, flavonoids and antioxidants that work together to enhance its effects. As with any supplement, it makes sense to fully understand the benefits before deciding if it is right for you, and to invest in a high-quality product from a reputable source.
62
WHAT’S IN THE POT?
Cannabis derived products have long been used throughout the centuries for their medicinal properties, including relieving inflammation, pain relief and reducing anxiety. Research and scientific studies on CBD oil continue, but many believe its therapeutic effects are far further reaching than currently known. Scientific and clinical research being undertaken in the USA is studying CBD’s potential to treat many serious conditions including arthritis, PTSD, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis and diabetes. Its anti-cancer properties are also currently being investigated at several academic research institutes.
Pain relief
One of the most common uses for CBD oil is for pain relief – from minor aches and discomfort to treating pain caused by chronic conditions. Several studies have shown it to be an effective and safe analgesic for many kinds of issues. It is believed to interact with receptors in the brain and immune system to reduce inflammation and alleviate pain. Early research has shown promising results for the use of CBD oil in relieving chronic long-term pain as well as reducing joint inflammation and easing muscle spasms without side effects. This could ease symptoms caused by conditions such as arthritis and multiple sclerosis.
Skin saviour
CBD oil is rich in a powerful antioxidant and, when added as a lotion, serum or salve and applied to the skin topically, it can have huge benefits. It is believed to repair damage caused by UV rays and environmental pollutants and products are being developed to help treat acne and psoriasis.
Protecting bones
CBD oil has been shown to aid the process of bone metabolism, in which old material is replaced by new tissue. It has also been shown to block the enzyme that harms bone building, reducing the risk of age-related diseases like osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. Studies suggest it could help speed up the process of new bone-cell formation, vital in the healing of broken bones.
Anxiety and depression
CBD oil has been commonly used to treat physiological symptoms for some time, but there is growing evidence that it can be used in the treatment of a range of mental-health conditions. It has been shown to help those suffering with clinical depression due to its impact on serotonin levels, replicating the effects of commonly prescribed pharmaceuticals. Studies carried out in 2010 into the use of CBD to treat bipolar disorder showed that although it was not useful for treating manic episodes, for depressive episodes it showed potential.
Epilepsy
The use of cannabis-derived products to treat epilepsy has been in the news following several high-profile cases. In those instances, patients were using a cannabis oil with a higher THC content, and so, unlike CBD oil, is not usually allowed in the UK. However, the Government is reviewing the law to enable doctors to prescribe it as a medicinal drug. Some studies show CBD oil itself has anti-seizure properties and can reduce the frequency of seizures in young people with two rare types of epilepsy by a notable amount. For those looking for a natural alternative to treat many conditions, CBD oil could be a game changer with the potential to help many users relieve their symptoms and enjoy a new lease of life.

Spice it up Cardamom is an amazing spice which warms, revitalises and repairs body and mind – as well as leaving your taste buds tingling As the wintry weather bites and we cosy up inside, a warming spice is a welcome addition to any food or drink – especially one which has so many healthy benefits. Cardamom has a strong but sweet flavour with a delicious hint of citrus and mint. It is a real star of the spice world; not only can it be used in a multitude of different foods – from sweet sticky cinnamon buns to flavoursome Indian rice dishes – it has great antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties, making it a super spice. It is considered to be one of the world’s oldest spices and the Ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans used it to treat a multitude of ailments from keeping their teeth clean to tackling stomach troubles. Many of these traditional remedies continue today. It might be enjoyed around the globe, but cardamom is only grown in a few tropical countries, originating from the Kerala region in southern India. A member of the ginger family, the cardamom pod contains a number of seeds which can be used whole or ground up as a spice. Its seeds, oils and extracts are believed to lower blood pressure and boost metabolism, help prevent bacteria and regulate blood-sugar levels. Cardamom is also a great source of important minerals and vitamins, including potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron,
64
manganese, riboflavin, niacin and vitamin C. Here are just some of the magic-making abilities of this brilliant humble seed.
GO WITH THE FLOW
Cardamom is a diuretic, which helps our bodies to regulate the flow of water which builds up around the body, such as around the heart. This makes it an excellent natural remedy for lowering our blood pressure and keeping our heart healthy.
BREATHE EASY
Cardamom has long been considered a great ingredient for improving blood circulation in the body, in particular the lungs. In many cultures it is used as a natural remedy for respiratory disorders, while helping maintain vitality and energy levels.
FIGHTING FIT
Cardamom is packed with antioxidants which help protect you from and fight against a number of ailments and serious illnesses. Black cardamom in particular can be used to help cure colds and coughs, and a traditional drink of honey, hot water and a few cardamom pods has long been considered an excellent natural remedy which warms the whole body. The high number of antioxidants found in cardamom also provide
anti-inflammatory benefits, helping to protect cells from damage and preventing and controlling inflammation in your body.
SETTLE DOWN
Cardamom has been used to cure a multitude of stomach ailments for thousands of years. It is often mixed with other medicinal spices such as turmeric to relieve tummy ache, nausea and vomiting. Due to its strong aroma, it helps activate taste buds which enables the secretion of enzymes necessary for good digestion. It is particularly beneficial when consumed after heavy meals, improving the movement of food through the intestine and curing common stomach problems like indigestion and constipation.
FRESHEN UP
One of the most well-known uses of cardamom throughout history is as an ancient dental treatment. The floral and sweet aroma makes it a natural breath freshener – but more than that, a major component of cardamom oil is known for its antimicrobial properties which help fight common mouth bacteria which cause bad breath and even cavities. Even today, in some cultures whole cardamom pods are chewed to freshen breath after a meal. Research is also underway to look at the potential benefits of cardamom to fight the bacteria caused by food poisoning. •
From east to west One of the things which makes cardamom such a fantastic spice is its versatility. There are so many ways you can incorporate it into your diet, from a tasty curry and rice dish to a huge variety of bread and sweet bakes. In fact, if you thought it was an ingredient reserved for spicy Asian food, think again. Among the largest consumers of cardamom in the world is Sweden, where it is used to flavour everything from pastries to meatloaf. One of the easiest ways to get a daily intake of cardamom is in a mug of hot, aromatic tea to flush out toxins and provide the spice’s healthy benefits. Here are three Pukka teas to get you started:
