EDITOR’S LETTER
Juicy greetings READ
Fish! is one of my all-time favourite books. The concept comes from Pike Place Fish Market, Seattle. I have been to this place and you can see why the philosophy of how the fish market is run can work for every area of your life.

In Prescription Thug$ director Chris Bell turns his camera on the abuse of prescription drugs and, ultimately, himself. As he learns about Big Pharma, he falls down his own hole of addiction. An interesting watch.

Welcome to the first edition of Juiced! magazine for 2018! I am very excited about this issue. Not just because we have the very adorable Britain’s Got Talent judge supremo, Amanda Holden, as our cover star, but because it coincides with the launch of my brand new plan, Super Blend Me! You can read all about it in this issue and see some of the truly incredible results from the trial. I was lucky enough to catch up with Amanda at Juicy Oasis late last year. We nipped out on my little boat (The Mr Beaumont… yes I’m a huge Friends fan!) and took in the breathtaking surroundings of the retreat. There were a few of us on the river that day, including Angela Griffin, Tamzin Outhwaite, Nicola Stephenson and, previous Juiced! cover star, Jason Donovan (who I almost chopped into bits when I restarted the engine after he went in for a dip, and I didn’t realise he was there!). Amanda has used juicing as a tool to help stay healthy for years, but she also believes in balance. She’ll do a short juice ‘detox’ when she needs to put her body in for a service (as at Juicy Oasis), but equally she’ll have a juice or blend in the morning and tuck into something a little naughty in the evening, now and then. Amanda is joining in our Big Blend Challenge (8–17 January 2018), along with thousands of people around the world. This is ten days of my new Super Blend Me! plan and, because it’s a plant protein-based plan, I think she’ll find it easier than juicing. Hope you love the issue, which is packed with the usual blend of recipes, tips and inspiration. Don’t forget Juiced! is FREE to download from iBooks and Issuu and the hard copy is also FREE at juicemaster.com (excludes P&P). Spread the word and make the world a lighter, healthier place to be. Sharing is caring, as they say!

JUICY NEWS UPDATES FROM THE WORLD OF JUICING AND BEYOND
Jason on the set of the NutriBullet Balance advertisement
THE NUTRIBULLET JUST GOT SMART… AND WE MEAN REALLY SMART!
Jason took a trip to the good ol’ U.S of A late 2017 to help launch the world’s first smart blender. With five cameras staring at him, plus a studio audience and a crew of around 40, Jason was left to front the launch à la Steve Jobs style! The Apple reference is apt as the NutriBullet Balance takes the normal blender to smart blender, in the way the iPhone launched the smartphone.
This amazing tech calculates the nutritional values as you add ingredients. Never again will you wonder what the calorie count of your smoothie is, or how much fat, protein or carbs it contains. NutriBullet headhunted Jason to become the face of its new Balance model. Keep an eye out for the advertisement online – the new NutriBullet Balance will be available in the UK later this year. 07
Book ’em, Jason! The great and the good have RSVPd and a stellar line up of celebs will join Jason for the official launch of Super Blend Me! on 1 January. It’s the book the Juice Master has been begged to write, combining beautifully balanced blends with Jason’s trademark no-nonsense advice, and should be on your book list for 2018! Order your copy at juicemaster.com or download the app from the App Store or Google Play.
Sing while you spin!
Jason’s first ever blend plan New book, new app, out 1 January
Boom! 2018 is off the blocks and if, like most of us, you’re in need of a health reboot, Jason has a plan for you! The Juice Master’s FREE Big Blend Challenge takes place on 8–17 January, incorporating ten days of Jason’s new Super Blend Me! Challenge (see page 10). It’s anticipated that 150,000 people around the globe will sign up and participate, losing on average 10lbs during the challenge – just think how much lighter the world will be at the end! Get involved at superblendme.com and don’t forget to share your big blend success on Juice Master’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram channels, where the team will be regularly posting motivational messages to support you throughout the challenge. 08
As always, Jason has put his own twist on the spin classes which take place at Juicy Oasis with a mega 80s’ soundtrack that keeps guests going as they enjoy a high-intensity cycling workout. Of course the team takes its exercise seriously, but some of the funniest moments recently had to be 80s’ pop stars Jason Donovan belting out his own numbers as he gave it his all on a bike, and Bananarama’s Jacquie giving her best rendition of Venus as she spun her wheels (Rick Astley, we’re Never Gonna Give You Up until you pay us a visit in 2018!). Watch this space for more 80s stars appearing on the turbo trainers at Juicy Oasis.

ON RETREAT
A breathtaking moment
It’s a tough life...
All aboard with the Juice Master Walk on the wild side
Juicy Oasis’ reading group Before the 2017 season wrapped at Juicy Oasis, Portugal, Jason welcomed a host of celebrity guests for a preChristmas detox. Our cover star Amanda Holden and her gorgeous girlfriends, Angela Griffin, Tamzin Outhwaite and Nicola Stephenson, AKA The Golden Girls, indulged in a week on retreat, where they also bumped in to laid-back mega star Jason Donovan. “He was great fun to hang out with, and we just treated him like one of the girls,” shared Amanda at our recent cover shoot.
During their stay, Amanda braved a dip in the beautiful lake, while Angela shared a frame of her motivational Monday with Instagram fans. As you can see from our exclusive behind-the-scenes snaps, whether it was relaxing under a palm tree with a copy of Juiced! magazine or hanging out on Jason’s boat, the celebs had great fun before returning to the UK, restored and refreshed for a season of busy red-carpet events. Happy days! Come back soon guys, we miss you already…

SUPER BLEND ME!
NEW PLAN NEW YOU
! s t l u s e r r e p u s Maximum nutrition, minimum effort. Sound too good to be true? Blending’s about to get a whole lot smarter with Jason’s new plant protein-based plan, Super Blend Me! Combining the ease of blending with his nutritional knowledge, he’s got the recipes to help you get the results you want, fast! Take up Jason’s FREE Super Blend Me! Challenge on 8-17 January and have a truly happy new year…
SUPER BLEND ME!

uicing is unequivocally the #1 way to get the optimum number of fruits and vegetables into your daily diet on a regular basis. Fact. But it’s also true that prepping those nutrient-packed juices takes time and planning. Sometimes life’s busy, sometimes we just want it easy, and Juice Master Jason Vale has responded with his latest book and app, Super Blend Me! Noone could accuse Jason of being a slouch and he never does things by halves, so when he repeatedly heard people complaining that their beloved blenders and bullets – oh-so-quick and easy – weren’t giving them the results that they wanted, he responded with a plan that’s as balanced as each of his bestselling juice programmes.
ss e c c u s r o f s le u r 7 RULE 1 Pick your own Super Blend Me! Challenge and stick to it! RULE 2 Drink your Super Blends in the time frames laid out, but leave at least four hours between them. RULE 3 Drink your Super Blends slowly. RULE 4 Enjoy a maximum of two Hunger SOSs each day. RULE 5 Use common sense when exercising during the challenge. RULE 6 Don’t freak out if your Super Blend is slightly over the calorie count! RULE 7 Be sensible and let common sense prevail.
12
“There are many people out there blending away who can’t understand why they are still overweight and unhealthy, despite consuming what they feel are healthy blends” “I genuinely believe the NutriBullet has been responsible for the increase in people’s fruit and vegetable consumption, more than any other product on earth,” explains Jason. “Well, I say more fruits and vegetables, but I mean fruit. The majority of people with one of these blenders are usually using it for fruit smoothies, and the vegetables have gone begging! “This is mainly due to many people not having the faintest idea of what and how much they should be blending in order to get lean and healthy. Because of this, there are many people out there blending away who can’t understand why they are still overweight and unhealthy, despite consuming what they feel are healthy blends. It’s because many are using their blender in the wrong way and blitzing up blends which can rival the calorie content of a McDonald’s burger, fries and milkshake! “Admittedly, it also didn’t help that the first recipe book that came with the NutriBullet, featured recipes which just didn’t work and many were enough to put you off ever adding vegetables to your blends again. You cannot put three large carrots, two sticks
of celery, half a cucumber, a handful of spinach, two apples, a pear and some water into a NutriBullet and get a nice drink. In fact, you won’t get a drink at all. What you will end up with is a mound of mush, easier eaten with a spoon than drunk through a straw!”
MONUMENTAL CHANGE Although he’s known as the Juice Master, Jason has always incorporated blending into his plans, and his mission to Juice The World has a vision that a juicer and blender be as common as a kettle and toaster in every household. “People are more likely to use a blender than a juicer, and this is largely down to the cleaning aspect. This is why, I believe, over the past few years I have been inundated with requests from people to devise a plant protein-based blend plan, for sheer speed and ease. “I have taken my two plus decades’ worth of experience in this area, and come up with a pure blend plan for those who wouldn’t do a plan at all if they had to clean a juicer. I also wanted to devise a plan for people who aren’t exactly enamoured by the earthy vegetable juice side of life but are looking for a good, plant-based protein plan.”
Look what can be achieved in just 10 days
GARETH W

The result is Jason’s new Super Blend Me! book and app which incorporates 7-, 10-, 14- and 21-day challenges. “Even if you don’t do the plan and just use this book to get the right blends into your body each day, you will undoubtedly feel healthier,” says Jason. ”However, it is nothing compared to how you will look and feel when you go ‘blend exclusive’ for a period of time. “I cannot even begin to describe to you just how much better you will look and feel at the end of your personal Super Blend Me! Challenge. I say, your personal challenge, because although the maximum Super Blend Me! Challenge is 21 days, the plan has been designed so you can do 7, 10, 14 or even the big 21 days – it’s your call. The minimum, in order to see and feel noticeable results, is seven days, which is why I don’t suggest anything less. If you do the 10-day Super Blend Me! Challenge, you’ll see monumental changes in a short space of time.”
Gareth’s super stats
Lost 19lbs... (8.6kg) in 10 days Lost 5cm off waist and hips Lost 7.5cm off chest 4% reduction in body fat
’What an amazing experience! The best thing is how much clearer my mind feels and how much more energetic I feel. The plan was easy to follow and the preparation and clean-up is minimal. The smoothies all taste great... the energy I gained allowed me to cycle 16k a day and continue to play football which, at the start of the plan, I wasn’t expecting to be able to do on blends alone. On the penultimate night of my 10-day challenge I went food shopping and the thought of eating chocolate or fatty foods just didn’t appeal to me anymore. I intend to follow the 5:2 blend plan following this. Thank you so much for choosing me.’ JASON SAYS: ’This was the first set of results to come in from the 10-day test group, and when I saw Gareth’s, I think I re-
read them about ten times to make sure I wasn’t seeing things! This dude dropped 19lbs in 10 days – that’s almost nine kilos, a serious amount of weight! Clearly Gareth didn’t lose 19lbs of pure fat in 10 days, however his body finally had the time, space and right tools to ’clean house’ effectively and it started the process with gusto. The real beauty of Super Blend Me! is that when you finish you don’t want the crap anymore and you crave the good stuff. Isn’t that the Holy Grail? To just not want the crap anymore and be perfectly happy and satisfied without it? To actually crave healthy foods so they become part of your normal diet, without any fear of deprivation? Gareth’s mindset and biochemistry has changed and so has his normal diet. We should never underestimate the power of positive momentum.’

SUPER BLEND ME!
enormous amount of weight to lose or you just want to get shredded – Super Blend Me! has the perfect amount of macro-nutrients (protein, fat and carbohydrates) as well as a plethora of micronutrients (vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients) to satiate and sustain you. All the recipes have been balanced perfectly on the calorie front too. Generally I am not a calorie person, but it’s easy to overdo it when making blends, so I’ve also taken a nod in the calorie direction on this occasion (so you don’t have to).
“You’ll see monumental changes in a short space of time” ALL-INCLUSIVE PLAN To develop the plan, Jason himself undertook a 21-day Super Blend Me! Challenge, which he says left him with more energy, feeling healthier and with a razor-sharp, clear mind. He also invited a group of volunteers to trial the 7-, 10-, 14- and 21-day plans. “I took a bunch of people of all shapes, sizes and sexes and put Super

Blend Me! to the test. “I knew the results would be pretty good, after all, I have been doing this for over two decades and it’s the only subject I know anything about. However, when I saw one guy had dropped 19lbs during the 10-day trial, I knew I was onto something pretty special. “It doesn’t matter if you have an
PLANT POWER “Super Blend Me!, due to its rich plant protein-based recipes, has also been designed with physical exercise in mind. Whether you’re an athlete or just someone who likes to workout daily, you can exercise to your heart’s content on this programme. To give you some idea, when I did the 21-day Super Blend Me! Challenge, I committed to cycling 21 miles on a spinning bike, for 21 days straight. I consistently beat my time every week. Do not fear you’ll lose muscle mass either, as the Super Blend Me! Challenge has been designed with amino acids in mind, the building blocks for protein. When you read some of the results from the test group, you’ll see many people lost body fat and gained muscle mass. ”It could be easily argued that all protein ultimately comes from plants, as the largest land animals in the world are vegan – everything from a rhino to a fully-grown bull elephant
gets protein from the amino acids found in plants. You’ve only got to look at the sheer muscle mass of a giraffe, bullock, elephant or even a cow for that matter, to relax in the knowledge you’ll be good to go on the protein front when getting your amino acids from plant-based foods. If you are a meat and/or dairy eater, you can relax in the knowledge that my intention is not to turn you into a vegetarian or vegan. I simply want to point out that you don’t need to worry about your protein intake for the duration of your Super Blend Me! Challenge – nature has already got things covered for you!”
EASY DOES IT! Keeping things simple was a key consideration for Jason when devising the Super Blend Me! plan, as his goal was to make it super convenient, super satisfying, super speedy and super easy. “Super Blend Me! has been described as the ‘juice’ plan for people who don’t do juice plans; there are a few things that can put people off a juice ‘detox’ and cleaning the juicer is at number one. “Then there’s the taste factor. As mentioned, these blends are amazing. Many pure juice plans take quite a nod in the earthy direction taste-wise, which often can’t be helped due to being largely vegetable-based, but this can put some people off. The beauty of Super Blend Me! is a blender takes seconds to rinse through. There are also many ingredients which blend beautifully but don’t work in a juicer. Nut butters, for example, create a creamy texture and taste, and add good amounts of protein, which keep you satisfied. ”Blends are super-fast too – it only takes five minutes to make each recipe, and that includes the washing up!
JOANNE O
Jo’s super stats
Lost 12lbs... (5.4kg) in 10 days Lost 3%... body fat Lost 5cm... off hips and thighs Got into size 8 jeans
’After completing the Super Blend Me! 10-day challenge I feel super happy with the results and I’ve actually got into my size 8 jeans with a little room around my belly, for the first time since having a baby! The first three days was a struggle, I had a constant headache and was tired. By day four, I felt a lot better and by Saturday it was routine, I didn’t care that my friends were eating pizza! Although the last few days I craved a meal that I could chew. I was surprised how nice the blends tasted and I will definitely carry on to have them on a regular basis. I just want to say a massive thank you for helping me lose a chunk of my weight. I still have a little bit more I want to lose around my belly, but I know it will be a lot easier and quicker now I’ve been introduced to the Super Blend Me! plan. So happy with the results.’
JASON SAYS: ’The fact Joanne dropped 12lbs (5.5 kilos) and shaved 5cm off her hips and thighs (in just 10 days) will resonate, but for many there’s something about getting back into a pair of jeans that words can’t often describe. Although the first three days were a struggle for her, by day four she was over the withdrawal hump, flying high and didn’t even care that her friends were eating pizza as she was more than happy with her Super Blend! ’I highly recommend reading the book, especially the ’7 Rules’ and ’7 Tips For Success’, as I cover the first three days and what to expect. Not everyone struggles but it’s good to know what withdrawal symptoms may occur, so you know how to mentally deal with them with ease.’
57 15
STEVE V TRAIN OF THOUGHT As you might expect from the Juice Master, Super Blend Me! also contains a healthy serving of Jason’s advice on dealing with the psychological withdrawl from food addiction. Having helped millions of people around the globe to overcome the mental challenges of a detox and succeed with weight loss through his bestselling plans, Jason explains the mindshift that can help you succeed, without the need for ‘dieter’s willpower’.
Steve’s super stats
Lost 5lbs... (2.3kg) in 10 days Gained 3% muscle Stomach flatter Leaner and toned Skin clearer Sleeping better
’I have completed the Super Blend Me! plan and I feel... rebooted! My body feels lighter, cleaner and rejuvenated from the junk I was eating before. Skin is clear, stomach flatter, feel leaner, toned and less sluggish. I have more energy, plus I’m able to train more than once a day and still feel good. Feeling better, more positive and upbeat, not as stressed or unhappy. The urges for junk went away – it wasn’t hard to resist junk after days 4-5. Sleeping quicker and waking up easier, without having to use the snooze button. This has to be my favourite Jason Vale plan – it makes you feel full and you only need a blender.’ JASON SAYS: ’Steve is sleeping better, his skin has improved, he feels less sluggish, he’s not as stressed, he’s happier, he’s
16
more positive and upbeat and, most importantly, his urges for junk have gone away. The reason I feel this is the most significant achievement is because it’s long-term success we should be aiming for, not a quick fix. It’s all very well dropping weight, but if your desire for junk is still there, you’ll put it all back on the second you start munching on crap again. Like so many others on the trial, Steve lost body fat and gained 3 per cent muscle mass, which is phenomenal. Clearly he was lifting weights too, but in order to build muscle you need to feed those muscles the right amino acids (building blocks for protein) post-workout, and because Super Blend Me! is rich in plant-based protein, it did the trick nicely. When you give your body the time, space and nutritional tools to do so, it will do what it can to perform well.’
“If you thought you’d have to make sacrifices in order to embark on a Super Blend Me! C hallenge, take a moment to really think about every area of your life where you’re already making genuine sacrifices, without even realising it,” says Jason. ”From the clothes you can’t fit into, the illnesses you may suffer from that hold you back, to the energy you don’t have to allow you to embrace the opportunities life has to offer. “Focus on the fact that this is only for a very short space of time (even if you pick the maximum 21-day challenge) and really consider what can be achieved in the short-term, that you can benefit from long-term. ”Rest in the knowledge that the best part of Super Blend Me! is how it resets your mind and body. Give Super Blend Me! a minimum of seven days to work its full magic, and come day eight, the last thing that you’ll want is junk; you’ll actually

JUICY INTERVIEW
The very talented
Ms Holden Stage and screen actress, presenter, judge, interior designer, yummy mummy, juicer and all-round good sport, Amanda Holden spins as many plates as a Britain’s Got Talent finalist. With such a crazy schedule, nutrition, exercise – plus a little downtime with friends at Juicy Oasis – are key to keeping it all on track, she tells Juiced! magazine...
Glamorous, gorgeous and great fun, Amanda Holden is one of Britain’s shining stars, but the girl whose first taste of show business was as a Blind Date contestant is still as down to earth as they come. Her arrival at a West London studio to chat with Juiced! magazine is accompanied by a small styling team to rival that of any A-lister, but – as is her selfdescribed approach to life – Amanda is ready to ‘get on with it’. In reality she needs little prepping, already looking incredible in tailored trousers, a chic silk shirt and an impressive pair of red-soled heels which scream red-carpet. Obligingly she leaps into action, a perfectly mixed Juice Master blend in hand, as energetic and enthused as if this were her first shoot. Of course the stylish Ms Holden is a household name as a long-standing judge on Britain’s Got Talent, alongside regular presenting appearances on This Morning and Lorraine. It’s easy to forget that Amanda is also a Laurence Olivier-nominated actress who started out on screen in Wild At Heart, Jonathan Creek and EastEnders, before appearing in sell-out West End productions of Thoroughly Modern Millie and, more recently, the highly acclaimed Stepping Out. January sees the start of filming for the twelfth series of Britain’s Got Talent which she has been with since the talent show first aired on our screens. Amanda is ready to dish up her trademark ‘firm but fair’ advice to contestants and will undoubtedly be wowing audiences with a new collection of jawdropping outfits. Alongside stage and screen work, Amanda has launched her successful BundleBerry interiors range for QVC, but – first and foremost – is also a proud mum who refuses to let work take her far away from home. With so many hats to wear, which one does she enjoy most? “All of them,” she replies. “The connecting thread is that they are all

live. I love it when you have to fly by the seat of your pants. There’s the adrenaline rush and it’s exciting to be a part of shows which have a frisson of the unexpected. It’s what I love doing most. “In this country you’re only allowed to do one thing at a time, in the public’s mind, but I would like to return to acting, and it’s definitely a case of watch this space. I’ve always said that once the girls are old enough, I would take on a role, but filming means 12-16 weeks away from the family and I won’t leave them that long while they still need me.” Having had their first daughter, Lexi, in 2006, before marrying record producer Chris Hughes in 2008, Amanda has spoken openly of the couple’s heartbreak when she miscarried in 2010 and their son was stillborn in 2011. Despite a life-threatening labour, the couple’s second daughter, Hollie, was born in 2012. The family unit is tight and, despite Amanda’s crazy schedule, time together is precious, spent between London during the week and their 600-year-old Cotswolds country home, which they have renovated.
Home girl
While most celebrities would call in an interior designer and return once the job is complete, the project has been a joy for Amanda who rolled up her sleeves, on occasion jumping into a skip as her Instagram feed shows, and drew from her range to furnish the country retreat. “I have always been passionate about interior design,” says Amanda, “and when we sat down with QVC there were fashion and beauty projects on the table, but I wanted it to be interior design, as homes are my first love. I’m completely involved in the development of the range, which will see a third collection launch this month, and it’s going from strength-to-strength. “At our country home, I’ve used many of the more contemporary pieces which are a real juxtaposition to the traditional style of the property. At our London home, which is far more modern, I’ve created a luxe, cocooned feel which is a wonderful retreat at the end of

a long day. I like to take risks and I’m a big believer in a pop of colour. “We love spending time in the country, with long walks with the dogs. It’s bliss and about as far removed from show business as it gets. Together we’re a real blend: Chris is extremely observant and a good sounding board; Hollie is very gregarious, chatty and loves to perform; while Lexi – though not as confident – is more thoughtful, most happy composing tunes and wants to be a vet. We have fun together and they are all involved in the decisions we make as a family. Whatever the girls want to do in life, I just want them to have great support around them, as I think that’s all that matters in the end. “I do work hard to maintain a healthy work/life balance, but I was chatting about this with Alesha
(Dixon, fellow Britain’s Got Talent judge) and I said you can only be the mum you can be. Yes, you can put down that book and spend time with your child, but we’ve got to stop whipping ourselves about being working mums. Did your child go to bed happy? If the answer is yes, you’re doing OK.” Alongside her family, Amanda has a fantastic group of girlfriends, including fellow celebrities Angela Griffin and Tamzin Outhwaite, and their favourite place to hang out and unwind away from the pressures of celebrity life is at Juicy Oasis, in the company of Juice Master Jason Vale.

the 10k mountain hikes at Juicy Oasis to maintain her fitness levels. “I love to run,” she says, “because, as any mum will tell you, it’s the only hour you get to yourself, to listen to music and to think uninterrupted. “I also love Kundalini Yoga which has a focus on mindfulness and breath work. I hate working on my abs, but there’s a practice which involves sharp exhaling which is a killer for the stomach muscles.” January is often the
Amanda’s Super Blend Me! judge’s notes “I first ‘discovered’ Jason when Katie Price had her eldest son, Harvey,” says Amanda. “She was back in shape incredibly quickly and credited Jason’s 7lbs in 7 Days plan for the transformation, and I was all over it, intrigued to know more. “Having become great friends over the years, when Jason calls and suggests a detox week, everyone cancels everything in our diaries and it’s booked, nailed down and done. We love it so much. It’s quality time to step off the merry-go-round, cleanse, chill and relax, which is so, so valuable. “Being sober, alert, open and honest with yourself at Juicy Oasis is an empowering thing. Each time I come back with such mental clarity, ready to go again and it’s the ultimate recharge.
Healthy passion
“I’ve also learned so much about nutrition from Jason. Of course we are educated ladies and we all know broadly what we should do, but it’s just

A is for asthma Asthma is a long-term condition affecting the airways with symptoms including difficulty breathing, chest tightness, wheezing and coughing. In the UK, around 5.4 million people are currently receiving treatment for asthma – that’s the equivalent of one in 12 adults, and one in 11 children. Asthma affects more boys than girls, but in adults is more common in women than men. This is thought to be due to female hormone levels, so it may help to ensure your hormones are wellbalanced to minimise onset at puberty or in adult life. Atopic (childhood onset, extrinsic) asthma affects children and young adults through hypersensitivity to dust, pollen, animal dander and

fungi. When encountered, the antigen or antibody reaction results in the release of histamine and other related substances that stimulate mucus secretion and muscle contraction that narrows the airways. Non-atopic (adult onset, intrinsic) asthma occurs later in life and is often associated with chronic inflammation of the upper respiratory tract as well as other triggers such as exercise and occupational exposure. The Asthma Society UK says: ‘For most people with asthma, healthy eating advice is exactly the same as it is for everyone else: follow a balanced diet that includes plenty of fresh and unprocessed food and is low in sugar, salt and saturated fat.’

H is for hypertension Hypertension means your blood pressure is higher than the recommended level. It is an extremely serious condition and can lead to strokes and heart attacks. Blood pressure is caused when the major blood vessels leading from the heart and lungs become furred up and constricted and the elasticity of the arterial walls is reduced, making the vessels stiff. This increases the internal pressure of the blood flowing through the arteries thus making the bloody pressure very high. There are many reasons for hypertension but we can focus on lifestyle factors which can make a positive difference to our blood pressure. Common causes include
poor diet (not enough fresh food and too high salt), lack of exercise, being overweight, smoking, overuse of alcohol and illegal drugs, poor sleep and increased levels of stress. Other factors can include sleep apnoea, chronic kidney disease, thyroid problems and certain medications including birth control pills, cold remedies, decongestants, over-the-counter pain relief and even some prescription medication, so it is important to check the contra-indicators of any prescription drugs. Hypertension is serious and lifestyle changes should be addressed immediately as the medical drugs offered may cause unpleasant and unwanted side effects.

I is for immune system The immune system is the collective name for the organs, tissues and cells of the body that work to prevent and heal disease. Parts of the immune system include the lymphatic system, the skin and mucous membranes (which prevent germs and toxins from entering the body in the first place),
white blood cells, spleen, bone marrow and antibodies. The immune system’s function is to protect the body against infection and disease. According to medical experts, the immune system becomes depressed when toxic material builds up in the body. Stress, nutritional deficiencies and bad food choices can all impair the immune system.

P is for psoriasis Psoriasis is a non-contagious skin condition which produces plaques of thickened, scaling skin, it is a particularly tenacious condition and needs a therapeutic attack on many fronts. The root cause of psoriasis is thought to be an immune system disorder with causes varying from person to person, but these may include stress, medication, infection and injuries. Juice Master Jason Vale lived with psoriasis for many years and learnt to control the condition through a healthy diet, daily
juicing, correct supplementation and exposure to sunlight therapy. Jason has also developed an herbal supplement and juice programme specifically for this disease which includes the exclusion of many foods and drinks, as well as the introduction of herbal teas and juice boosts, specifically designed for psoriasis and other skin conditions. S is for sore throat Sore throats are caused by the bacteria which live in the ears, nose and throat. Streptococcus aureus is an endemic microbe, which means it lives inside the person (the host). Most of the time it is under control by the host’s immune system and by other friendly bacteria and yeasts. When the host’s immune system is over-burdened or underperforming, these opportunistic bacteria can multiply and proliferate, leading to inflammation, soreness and localised infection of the mucosal tissues of the throat. A sore throat in an adult is usually the symptom of a cold but the same should not be ignored in a child, as it may be a bacterial

infection that could lead to more serious problems such as tonsillitis, strep throat or rheumatic fever. Most of the time, conventional treatment for ‘strep throat’ is a course of antibiotics to kill the bacteria. This can also kill off friendly bacteria, lead to a proliferation of yeast organisms and an outbreak of thrush (candida albicans). There is a chance that a sore throat can be the sign of a viral infection and antibiotics are ineffectual. In this case, rest, take soothing remedies and wait for the body’s immune system to overcome the invasion. Dr Bernard Jensen believes tonsillitis is a disease caused by the body’s need to eliminate toxins.
What to choose…
Blueberry, blackberry, elderberry, lemon, grapes, papaya, pear and pomegranate Also helpful are some lesser known herbs such as black cohosh, fenugreek, hyssop, marshmallow and mullein. Thyme makes as an excellent gargle for sore throats and tonsillitis.

INGREDIENT FOCUS
Butter me up! Quality nut butters are tasty, hunger suppressing, convenient and, in moderation, extremely healthy. Follow our guide and discover why nut butters are a brilliant addition to your diet
Delicious and easy to incorporate into blends and dishes for breakfast, lunch, dinner or snack time, it isn’t hard to see why quality nut butters are the 'go-to' food of the moment. Whether you love almond butter spread on warm toast for breakfast, a spoonful of peanut butter added to a vegetable stir-fry, or a cashew nut butter, pineapple and coconut smoothie, there is a tasty, indulgent creamy butter out there for you.
The nut butter market is packed with a huge array of flavours, gourmet brands and exotic-sounding blends. While the much-loved peanut butter still dominates the shelves, an increasing variety are now vying for your attention – and not just in health-food stores; high-street supermarkets are very much part of this revolution. Nut butters can be a great alternative to animal fats or cheese while cooking and can add a depth of flavour to any dish. They are also rich in energy, hunger suppressing and bursting with antioxidants and vitamins. Used as a topping, a thickener in baking or cooking, or a luxurious product on wholegrain bread, these versatile spreads can be added to smoothies, put into desserts and even used to make the most incredibly delicious ice creams. But while they all offer different properties and benefits – almonds, for example, are full of magnesium and vitamin E and cashews are packed with iron and zinc – the one thing they have in common is that they are a great way of getting both protein and the right sort of fats into your diet. However, it is also important to remember that while they are rich in healthy fats, they should be eaten in moderation as part of a balanced diet. Just a small amount packs a real nutritional punch thanks to the amount of vitamins, minerals and natural goodness they all contain. The quality of the nut butters on the market can vary hugely, so there are a few things to look out for to make sure you get both the healthiest and tastiest. Technically, you only need one ingredient to make nut butter – ground nuts – but oils, sugar and salt are often added for taste and consistency. So check the labels and choose coconut oil bases instead of palm oil, avoid excessive sugar and salt and other additives, choose organic where possible and go for those which contain agave nectar instead of sugar. You can even make your own in a good-quality blender. Crunchy or smooth, nut butters come packed with flavour that will leave you reaching for the jar for just a little bit more...

INGREDIENT FOCUS
CASHEW: CREAM OF THE CROP Cashews are the seeds of the cashew apple, the ‘fruit’ of the cashew tree. This ‘nut’ grows inside a hard, highly poisonous shell which makes extraction difficult and the cost high. Cashew butter is creamy, naturally sweet and hugely versatile. High in protein and minerals, including iron, zinc, amino acids and magnesium, it is an excellent choice for those following a vegetarian diet. Around 75 per cent of the fat in cashew butter is heart-healthy oleic acid, but limit your intake to a couple of tablespoons a day for a balanced diet. Blitz and freeze a tablespoon with bananas and soy milk for ice cream with a difference.
WALNUT: WHIP IT UP! Walnut has the highest amount of Omega-3 fats of all nut butters. These help to trigger the hormone leptin which tells us we’ve had enough to eat, so walnut butter is a great addition to a diet plan. Dense and earthy in flavour, most people use walnut butter mixed with other ingredients in healthy raw desserts and smoothies.
COCONUT: CURRIES AND CAKES Coconut butter is a great way of getting this superfood into your diet. The butter is made from coconut meat, which gives it a rich, slightly flaky consistency. Like other nut butters, it is full of healthy fats that, used in moderation, are a metabolism booster. It contains lauric acid, found to boost immunity, and is a high-fibre food, rich in iron. Add a spoonful to a curry or wholesome cake for a taste twist and healthy boost.
34
HAZELNUT: A HEALTHY SPREAD
PEANUT: NOT JUST FOR MONKEYS!
Hazelnuts provide plenty of energy and are exceptionally rich in folate which is associated with healthy pregnancies. Packed with vitamins E and B, plus potassium, research has linked hazelnut intake with healthy ageing and decreased anxiety. Hazelnut is often coupled with chocolate, but make your own spread by mixing hazelnut butter with high-quality cocoa powder for a sweet treat without the additives.
Among the nation’s long-standing favourites, peanuts contain one of the highest amounts of protein per serving among seeds and nuts. Rich in unsaturated fats which leave you feeling fuller for longer, peanut butter also contains magnesium, great for fortifying muscles and bones, and potassium, which has been found to have a positive impact on lowering blood pressure. It is high in calories though, so keep servings small. You can get peanut butter at virtually every price point, from basic supermarket own brands to gourmet recipes. Avoid those that contain palm oil and opt for those with as few additional ingredients as possible. Aim for a 100 per cent nut blend, the nirvana of nut butters.
ALMOND: ADD A LITTLE SWEETNESS Studies suggest almond butter, per serving, has one of the least number of calories and is the most fibrous of all nut butters. Packed with protein and rich in antioxidants, research shows a breakfast containing the nuts may aid in stabilising blood-sugar levels, giving you more energy. Add some almond butter to your morning smoothie or a bowl of oatmeal. It has a delicately sweet taste, which means kids will love it as much as adults!

SUPER BLEND ME!
‘I lost 16lbs in 14 days…
and my wife got a new husband!’ Feeling inspired by Jason’s Super Blend Me! Challenge? Meet two readers who tried the plan and lost an incredible 34lbs in just two weeks! After almost a decade of yoyo dieting, Paul Burrows knew that he wanted to transform his lifestyle for good. “I was definitely in the diet trap,” explains Paul. “I got healthy and fit, but I lost three family members in quick succession, went on the road to self-destruction, ate junk and put on a stone a year, for five years. “I was in my mid-40s and from Thursday to Monday, it was ‘party time’, every week. I like socialising and I would totally self-justify my behaviour by telling myself I worked hard and deserved to let off steam.
36
“By August 2016, I was just below 20 stone, and deep down I knew things had to change. I was mentally drained all the time and had no strength. I’ve tried every diet out there and for a long time I stuck to a high protein, low-carbohydrate plan because I thought it was healthy, but I was always having to ‘control myself’ to stick with it. “I did have some success, but it was a real struggle – the last thing I used to think before I fell asleep was, ‘What will I eat tomorrow?’ and my whole life revolved around food and drink.

“I follow Juice Master on social media and when I heard about Jason’s Super Blend Me! Challenge, I applied, I couldn’t believe it when I was picked for the 14-day plan! I enjoyed the challenge – I never felt hungry and the blends were so satisfying. I lost 16lbs in two weeks
“Despite thinking I was healthy, blood tests suggested that was not the case, and a few things were not right. I was the classic, ‘Overfed, undernourished’ which Jason describes in Super Juice Me! “By this point, I was exhausted and started to look at retreats, thinking a break would help me restart my diet. A colleague suggested Juicy Oasis so I looked it up. Instantly, I thought, ‘Can I do it?’ Seven days without solid food, but I knew I needed a paradigm shift. I told my wife, Tina (above), who wanted to go and we booked a stay for January 2017. “In the run up to the retreat, I cut down on coffee and alcohol, but the night before we left we had a bit of a blow-out meal, and as we sat in the departure lounge at Manchester Airport I didn’t know if I could do it. “I couldn’t have been more wrong about Juicy Oasis and it was the best holiday experience I have ever had in my life. It was so good, we went back in October and – even though I’ve travelled to many places – it was the holiday I most looked forward to. “Until you’ve been to Juicy Oasis, you can’t imagine it. There’s loads to do, fantastic people and it’s just superb. Everyone’s nervous at the outset, but you bond with the people you’re there with in an amazing way. I lost a stone in the first week at Juicy Oasis and another 12lbs on our second visit.

New man
“My whole outlook to dieting has changed forever. We juice every day, usually at breakfast, and I often take a salad or blend to work and then have a meal in the evening. My diet is 80-90 per cent vegetarian, but the biggest change is not having to control what I eat or drink and the constant craving I used to experience has completely gone. “Between January to August 2017, I was under pressure and stressed and there were definitely times when I would wander back to my old ways, but if it happened, I instantly felt the effects and realised my body wasn’t getting what it needed. I also quit drinking in April and although I’d always enjoyed a drink, having read Jason’s book, Kick The Drink... Easily! I didn’t need any willpower to stop. I still go to the pub with my friends and dance until midnight, but I know I don’t need alcohol to do so.
during the challenge! “Overall I’ve lost over four stone and I feel in harmony with my body. and have so much energy. We were getting ready to go out recently and my wife said, ‘It’s like I’ve got a new husband!’ It just feels brilliant. “I started training to become a nutritionist and naturopath and have now signed up for the Juice Master Academy to become a qualified Natural Juice Therapist. I’m passionate about helping people change their situation. As Jason says, ‘It’s your body and your life’, and I intend to live the one I want.” ■

had to adjust my wedding gown a couple of times, to reduce it by two sizes, which made me feel fantastic. Overall I lost 18lbs in 14 days – the results were incredible and gave me so much confidence on the day. I felt so good and there’s not one photo from the wedding where I didn’t feel completely happy with the way that I looked. “I’ve always found it hard to lose
With her wedding day ahead, Nicol Cockerham jumped at the chance to be part of Jason Vale’s Super Blend Me! Challenge. “I’m a big Juice Master fan, and when I saw Jason’s post on social media asking people to sign up to take part in his new challenge, I decided to enter on the spur of the moment,” says Nicol. “It was four weeks before our wedding and I thought, ‘If I get it, great’ and then forgot about it until I got an email telling me I had been selected. It was just before my hen weekend and I started the challenge the following Monday – it took me right up to the week before the big day, so it was perfect timing. “I’ve previously followed Jason’s Super Juice Me! plan for a week and enjoyed that, but with the Super Blend Me! Challenge I felt so nourished. There were a couple of days when I was tempted, but I like the feeling of achievement, and my fiancé, Josh, was very supportive. “The beauty of the Super Blend Me! plan is there’s no prep time, you can just chuck everything in the blender, whizz it up and go. I decided to chop and freeze ingredients ahead, so I always had a blend at hand. They
taste quite creamy and naughty, even though they are good for you, but it was great knowing the blends were perfectly balanced. “The other benefit was that my skin was glowing. I have always suffered from acne and during the challenge it cleared up which also had an effect on my selfesteem. “I had intended to exercise more in the runup to the wedding, but in the end I did my regular hour at the gym every other day with a mix of cardio and weights. I never eat before I exercise, but I always pack a healthy fruit bar or fresh fruit for afterwards. During the challenge I took a blend instead and I really felt like I was getting all the nutrients that I needed. “I know Jason says not to, but I was a bit naughty as I weighed myself every day. The most I lost was 4lbs in one day, but it became a bit of a game and motivated me to stick with it. I loved seeing the weight drop off and my husband-to-be was surprised – he could see how happy I was. As the day got closer, my dressmaker

MIND, BODY AND SPIRIT
Winter woolies are cosy, but exposing your body to sub-zero temperatures in a cryotherapy chamber could help you to heal injuries, improve health niggles and even lose weight Athletes have long extolled the virtues of applying cold compresses to muscle strains and sitting in ice baths to aid recovery. Andy Murray famously tweeted a photograph of himself, waist deep in ice, proudly clutching his Wimbledon trophy in 2016. The Welsh Rugby Union team went to the Olympic Sports Centre in Poland for daily treatments over a two-week period before the 2011 World Cup and Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly had a cryo-chamber installed in his house. Many athletes use cryotherapy to boost performance and as part of their recovery routine, however the treatment’s benefits are widespread. Cryotherapy has a growing reputation among A-listers for its beauty benefits, from reducing wrinkles and skinfirming, to boosting energy levels, treating cellulite and acne, plus its associated weight-loss connotations. High profile supporters include Mark Wahlberg, Demi Moore, Daniel Craig, Tony Robbins (reported to have a chamber in each of his homes), Alicia Keys and Hugh Jackman, who claim benefits from pain management, treating injuries, keeping in shape and fighting the signs of ageing.
Cryotherapy has been used for more than 30 years for chronic inflammatory conditions. Several studies have found whole-body cryotherapy significantly reduces pain in people with arthritis and other inflammatory diseases. It is widely used to boost immunity, as well as improve circulation, skin conditions and general wellbeing. Dr Colin Crosby, consultant in sports and exercise medicine at BMI The Garden Hospital, London, explains: “When you go outdoors on a snowy day, your hands, feet and other extremities go numb. This is because the blood is being pumped to your main organs and brain to protect them. When you go inside, the blood is flushed back into the system. That’s why your hands tingle. If you have, say, a five-fold increase in that cold and you stay in the chamber, the blood will do the same and flow to your brain and main organs. When you come out, the reaction means a huge blood flow to other areas, including those which are damaged. The endocrine system is stimulated by the cold and releases chemicals including anti-inflammatory markers and painrelieving hormones. The body releases feel-good endorphins and adrenaline to help the body in repairing injury.”
43
MIND, BODY AND SPIRIT
Essentially, after a cryotherapy treatment, your veins open to around three times their normal diameter and blood rushes to the surface. Among the immediate effects are pain relief, a boost in energy, superior healing times and revitalisation of the skin. Whole-body cryotherapy originated in Japan by Professor Toshiro Yamaguchi in the 70s for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Since then there has been much research into other health benefits associated with this treatment for inflammation in the body, from sports injury and recovery rates to inflammatory diseases and its application for weight loss. Cryotherapy exposes the body to extremely cold temperatures of around minus 120–160°C for three minutes. During this time, the skin's temperature drops to about 10°C, however the core temperature remains unchanged. The cryo-chamber looks similar to a stand-up sunbed and before you enter the chamber you are given warm boots and gloves to wear. For the most effective treatment you need to expose as much skin as possible, so you need to strip down to underwear or swimwear. When you enter the cryo-chamber, it is already pre-cooled, however your head and neck are not in the chamber and are still exposed to the normal room temperature. A fine mist of nitrogen is then sprayed into the chamber to lower the temperature. Cryotherapy rapidly increases the body’s metabolic rate. During a treatment, your body pumps blood to your core
to increase your body temperature and therefore your metabolic rate. Directly after a treatment, this enriched blood floods back throughout your body, boosting immunity, generating cell renewal, providing natural pain relief and a general feel-good factor as endorphins rush through your system. Your body uses energy to heat back up to its regular temperature and it is said that for up to about 6-8 hours following a session, you’ll continue to burn around 400–700 calories. In recent years, the application of cryotherapy to aid weight loss has become increasingly popular and there is long-standing scientific research to support this. One of the most famous is the ‘Antarctic study’ which looked at the calorific requirements of those who worked in the South Pole. It found they needed to eat an average of 1,500 additional calories a day just to maintain their body weight. Using findings from the research, experts in cryotherapy believe that sessions in a cryo-chamber offer people a way to use cold temperatures to lose weight, mimicking the effect of those exposed to the conditions in the Antarctic. Because the chamber is kept well below zero, the body’s temperature begins to drop in the freezing conditions and has to work hard, burning stored energy, in order to restore its normal temperature. With so many benefits, cryotherapy offers a unique, restorative treatment which can help a wide variety of people – whether it’s for cosmetic, weight-loss or wellbeing reasons, isn’t it time you took the plunge? ■

INGREDIENT FOCUS
1. NATURE’S ANTIBIOTIC
Matcha is packed with the good stuff including vitamins A and C, potassium, iron, protein and calcium. It also contains antibiotic properties for help in fighting viral attacks on our body’s immune system.
2. ANTI-OXIDANT POWERS
Matcha is high in epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a polyphenol which boosts energy and metabolism. EGCG minimises damage in cells, boosts mental alertness and improves cardiovascular function. One cup of matcha tea provides more than five times as many antioxidants as any other food.
3. CUP OF CALM
Used by Japanese Buddhist monks for more than a millennium as a support to meditation, matcha green tea contains amino acid L-Theanine which induces relaxation without drowsiness. L-Theanine also enhances mood and concentration, so even if you are not seeking a Zen state, it’s a great way to achieve a mental boost.
4. THE LONG HAUL
Japanese Samurai drank matcha before going into battle, thanks to the tea’s amazing energising abilities. L-Theanine can boost our stamina for up to six hours, providing clean, green energy for mind and body.
5. BURN, BABY, BURN…
Matcha green tea has been shown to increase metabolism and help the body burn fat four times faster than normal. As it’s all-natural, there are no negative side-effects, making it a great way to help your body perform at its best, naturally. Although matcha won’t make you lose weight alone, used as part of a balanced diet and regular exercise programme, it’s a great boost so go ahead and pour yourself another cup.
The perfect matcha Beloved by A-listers Gwyneth Paltrow and Kylie Jenner, plus a catwalk of Victoria’s Secret supermodels, matcha is an all-round superhero. Here are five fantastic reasons to pop the kettle on for a cup of the green stuff It’s mysteriously grown under cover with shade cloths to trigger the growth of flavoursome, textured leaves which are then hand-picked, steamed, dried and aged in cold storage, before being stoneground into a fine powder. Matcha is arguably the king of green teas, and its popularity has grown steadily in recent years, even though it has been drunk at traditional Japanese tea ceremonies since the 8th century.
Traditionally brewed and whisked with a bamboo brush until it froths, Pukka Herbs’ new Lean Matcha Green makes it easier to enjoy the benefits of this cuppa. With organic, medicinal-grade herbs, the blend includes cinnamon to help balance blood sugar levels and anti-inflammatory turmeric, plus plenty of flavour thanks to accent notes of fennel, ginger and black pepper.

Sleep easy We spend a third of every day asleep – or should do – and it is crucial to good health, yet millions of us struggle to drop off. So how can we get better at getting our zzzs?
The world always looks a much better place after a good night's sleep – it is the foundation of our wellbeing. Yet so many of us regularly struggle with sleep problems and never make it a priority to question why – or to ask what we can do about it. But we should. A lack of sleep can have life-changing repercussions, from serious illness and mental health issues to weight gain, lethargy and an impact on our physical state. For some, the issues are minor and with small lifestyle changes, they can be solved. For others, it can be a result of serious sleep disorders which require medical attention.
56 36
Research suggests that most adults need between seven and nine hours' sleep each night in order to replenish energy stores, enable the body to repair itself and to allow the mind to rest. Studies also show that people who get fewer than four hours of sleep each night tend to gain weight as the balance of the digestive hormones is disturbed, causing an increase in appetite and a craving for caloriedense foods. Have you ever noticed how you tend to turn to carb-based foods when you are tired or under par? So how can we help ourselves to get better at sleeping? Follow our six steps to a sensational night’s rest…
MIND, BODY AND SPIRIT...
1. Hold the drinks… Avoid alcohol and caffeine before bed as both are known to disrupt sleep and make it hard to fall into a meaningful uninterrupted slumber. Swap these for warm milky drinks or camomile tea, which is known for its natural sedative properties. 2. ...and grub! Aim to eat dinner earlier in the evening and avoid heavy meals or spicy foods late at night; these can cause heartburn and other digestive issues which interfere with a good night’s sleep. Studies suggest that some foods, including turkey, chicken, pumpkin seeds, beans, milk, cherries and rice are all good choices as they help with the production of the key chemicals needed to promote good sleep. 3. And relax… It is essential to unwind before bed and you need to find a routine which works for you. Run a warm bubble bath, do some gentle yoga stretches, meditate or read a book. Then sprinkle a few drops of essential lavender oil on your pillow, even play some relaxing music. Find something which enables you to switch off from the day and make it a routine each night, so your body follows the cues that it’s time to sleep. 4. Comfort zone Comfort is essential to a long undisturbed sleep and that starts with your mattress. It is a key investment and you must find the perfect one for your needs, which offers the correct support and comfort. Experts say you should replace it every seven years – sound advice not to be ignored. 5. Tech-free zone Ditch the screen! Research shows that looking at a device before bed, or even having the tiniest standby light on, is seriously counterproductive to the sleep cycle. Don’t work on your laptop in bed, avoid sending late-night emails or checking Facebook on your phone – even television in the bedroom is a night-time no-no. 6. Lights out When it is dark, our body releases melatonin which relaxes us and helps us to drift off. As it gets light, our bodies assume it is time to wake up. Invest in blackout blinds or curtains in your bedroom to ensure complete darkness during sleeping hours, or if that isn’t possible buy a goodquality eye mask which helps to keep out any light.

Don’t be SAD Feeling blue, craving comfort food and sleeping more than usual? Seasonal Affective Disorder could be the guilty culprit, but there is light at the end of the tunnel...
4
ways to beat the winter blues
1. Get as much natural sunlight as possible – take a brief lunchtime walk or wrap up warm and drink your juice or blend on a park bench. Make your work and home environments as light and airy as possible, and sit near windows when you are indoors.
58
2. Take plenty of regular exercise, particularly outdoors and in daylight – it could be a long walk or cycle ride, or perhaps you could join a local sports club. Team up with a friend or local group so you’re more likely to stick with it!
3. A healthy, balanced diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables has been shown to be beneficial in the treatment of SAD. Juicing is a great way to ensure you get a daily boost of the good stuff.
4. Talk to friends and family about SAD and how it makes you feel, so that they understand your mood may change during the winter months. Having their support on tough days can make all the difference to getting through the season.
MIND, BODY & SPIRIT
While most of us crave a bit of sunshine on a bleak, cold January day, for some, the ‘winter blues’ can be extraordinarily debilitating, physically and emotionally. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) affects millions of people every year, triggered by shortened daylight hours and a lack of sunlight. A depressive illness, symptoms range from a persistent low mood to feelings of despair, guilt and worthlessness; from severe depression to extreme tiredness and lethargy and weight gain. For most sufferers, symptoms begin in autumn and can last until March when daylight saving begins. The Seasonal Affective Disorder Association (SADA) was formed 20 years ago and offers support to those suffering with the condition. It estimates that almost a third of the population in the UK is affected by SAD at some level, and while for most of us the symptoms will be mild, for around 8 per cent of us it is classed as a serious illness which makes normal day-to-day function impossible. The causes of SAD are still being studied, but, according to experts, reduced exposure to sunlight stops part of the brain, the hypothalamus, working properly. This can affect the production of melatonin, the hormone which makes you sleepy; the production of serotonin, a hormone which affects mood, appetite and sleep; and the body's internal clock, which governs when you wake up. However severe your symptoms, there are plenty of treatments – from things to try at home to seeking help from a medical professional.
SEE THE LIGHT For some people, light therapy can make a huge difference to symptoms. It involves sitting by a specially designed lamp, called a light box, for 30-60 minutes each morning. Light boxes come in a variety of designs, from desk lamps to wall-mounted fixtures, but all produce a powerful bright light which is more than 20 times stronger than domestic lighting, simulating the sunlight that is missing during the darker winter months. According to SADA, light therapy has been shown to be effective in up to 85 per cent of diagnosed cases. You can still do normal activities such as reading, working and eating in front of the light. It is essential to choose a box which has been medically approved for the treatment of SAD and has been rigorously tested. REACH OUT The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends that SAD should be treated in the same way as other types of depression. In recent years, there has been a huge development in the use of psychotherapy, counselling, meditation and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to treat SAD. CBT is based on the idea that the way we think and behave affects the way we feel. Patients usually have a number of sessions over several weeks or months. Counselling can also help with depression caused by SAD, enabling a sufferer to talk to someone about their worries, anxieties and problems which are heightened during winter months. Always talk to your GP if you feel you are unable to cope with your symptoms.

INGREDIENT FOCUS
A lovely bunch of
coconuts Naturally refreshing, super-hydrating, deliciously sweet and packed full of goodness – it’s no wonder coconut water has become the drink of choice for sports stars and celebs Just a few years ago, coconut water was a drink only enjoyed while lounging on a palm-fringed beach somewhere hot and exotic. Today, it has gone from holiday treat to fridge favourite right here in the UK, thanks to its reputation as an all-round miracle drink. Long enjoyed in Brazil, India, Southeast Asia and the Caribbean, it has been suggested that this hydration hero may help with all sorts of conditions, from high blood pressure and kidney stones to the dreaded hangover (party-goers take note!). Coconut water has also been dubbed ‘Mother Nature’s sports drink’ by many of the world’s elite athletes and is often used as a natural boost.
IN A NUT SHELL Coconut water is the clear liquid found inside green, immature coconuts. Young coconuts are favoured for their water as it is tastier, plentiful in volume and easier to access as the soft shell can be chopped off at the top. Mature coconuts have a harder husk and less water as the liquid gradually solidifies to form the flesh as the coconut grows. The water has a sweet, nutty taste, but interestingly the flavour differs slightly, according to which part of the world the coconuts are grown in. Naturally refreshing, coconut water is low in fat and calories, has no cholesterol and contains easily digested carbohydrates in the form of sugar and electrolytes. It is also a good source of fibre, vitamin C, magnesium, potassium – which is essential for heart health and skeletal and muscular function – and several other valuable minerals.
ON YOUR MARKS… The drink’s growing popularity stems from its use by athletes as a way to restore hydration after exercise, thanks to its high levels of glucose and electrolytes. Studies have found it to be just as effective as commercial sports drinks at rehydrating the body, with the added benefit of being full of natural goodness, as opposed to the synthetic flavourings and refined sugars found in many regular glucose-based drinks. Although not calorie-free like regular water, coconut water is gaining popularity as an alternative to other soft drinks thanks to its low sugar content. It is also a great hangover cure thanks to those fantastic rehydration powers and the drink's high levels of vitamins and minerals.
PURE NUTRITION Nutritionists estimate that 100ml of fresh coconut water includes around 2.7mg of sugar, but some popular branded versions can be higher in sugar and can be pasteurised to lengthen their shelf life, so always check the ingredients carefully. Whatever the brand you choose, coconut water usually contains less sugar and fewer calories in comparison to many soft and sports drinks on the market. Check the label and try to seek out pure coconut water. Avoid flavoured varieties as they tend to have a higher sugar and calorie content, so keep it natural!

MIND MATTERS You've heard of HIIT for your body, but what about your brain? If brain fog means you feel sluggish and with a short attention span it could be time to invest energy into strengthening your mind. Start the year with your grey matter in gear with these top attention strengthening tips...
62 36
'Do I have brain fog?' Stress, lack of sleep, hormonal changes, diet and some medical conditions including anaemia, migraines, arthritis, depression and even dehydration can cause mental fatigue. If you are struggling with concentration, memory or clarity of thought, consult a healthcare professional to establish a diagnosis.
MIND, BODY & SPIRIT
1. It’s all about the little things Small mental challenges are great ways to test your brainpower – try counting backwards from 100 in 2s, 3s or 4s, or try to remember the ingredients in your favourite juices without looking at a recipe. Easy to do while you’re commuting or – even better – on a run, it's a great one to exercise both mind and body simultaneously.
2. Move it A recent study by scientists in Australia and Manchester shows that aerobic exercise helps our bodies to fight cognitive decline, reducing the deterioration in brain size, which ordinarily occurs as we age. The study’s lead author, Joseph Firth, says: “Exercise can be seen as a maintenance programme for the brain.”
3. New tricks Active learning helps your brain to develop new neural pathways and the start of a new year is the perfect moment to commit to your personal development. Turn to page 66 for your chance to win a Juice Master Academy programme or sign up at juicemasteracademy.com to become a juice prof!
4. LOL Yes, having a good chuckle really does help our brains. Ever noticed how good it feels when you enjoy a real belly laugh? According to science, laughing minimises the damage that the stress hormone, cortisol, can cause to our ability to learn and remember. So next time you’re feeling stressed out, find a good comedy on Netflix or head to a comedy club for a mental boost.
5. Go social Ditch your Instagram feed for an hour or two and get together with some friends to catch up in real time. As well as boosting our emotional wellbeing, chatting with others enhances our attention span and memory recall as we follow and help to develop a good conversation. Even more reason to grab a copy of Super fast Food and invite your mates over for dinner this weekend.
6. And so to bed Your mother was right, a good night’s sleep really is important. In fact, scientists found that sleep deprivation can result in reduced metabolism and blood flow in multiple brain regions. So make sure that you get your zzzs each night… If you are struggling to drop off when your head hits the pillow, turn to page 56 to learn how to unwind and get some quality sleep tonight.

Q&A
ask
Jason
What would you most like to ask the Juice Master? We grabbed a juice and quizzed Jason with some of your burning questions WHICH SPORTS STAR WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO WORK WITH? David Beckham, no question about it. He’s one of the greatest football players of all time and, from what I see, one of the nicest people too. Not only would I love to kick a ball around with him at Juicy Oasis or The Juice Ranch, but I’d also like to work with him on a blending project – main reason? So I could ‘Blend It Like Beckham!’
WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE IN THE WORLD FOR FRESH FRUIT?
WHO IS YOUR FAVOURITE CHEF AND WHY? Phil Vickery of This Morning fame. To some it's a strange choice, but he’s so underrated and as good (if not better!) as any of the bigger TV chefs. He makes cooking any dish incredibly easy and he’s ego free. At the other end of the scale, I like Gordon Ramsay. He keeps himself fit, loves a smoothie and has a charisma which draws you in. I guess I need to mention Jamie Oliver too, I mean how can you not? Jamie is an icon who has worked tirelessly to get to where he is. He’s an amazing chef and his Everyday Super Food is a great book. He campaigns for real food, a subject close to my heart, and has created a position where even politicians listen to him. But, if I could only pick one chef to have on a private island with me, Phil Vickery gets my vote! 64
I am a huge fan of the fresh fruits found in the Caribbean, South America and Asia. The single freshest juice you can have is direct from a coconut, which you can find in those parts of the world.
WHAT JOB DO YOU THINK YOU WOULD BE DOING IF YOU WEREN’T DOING THIS? Stand-up comedy. I am going to do the Edinburgh Festival one year, with a one-week, one-hour show (under a different name clearly!) I am unsure I would ever make any money with it, so I don't know if I could call it a 'career', but if I wasn’t doing this I would have moved to a hot country, lived on a beach and had a small café and surf rental business.
Q&A
WHAT’S THE SINGLE BEST DECISION YOU’VE MADE SO FAR?
IT’S THE SEASON OF SNIFFLES. WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND TO HELP BEAT A WINTER COLD?
YOU PLAN A MOVIE NIGHT IN – WHAT FILM DO YOU PICK AND WHAT SNACKS ARE ON THE MENU?
Ginger, ginger and more ginger! You should really get a cheeky Ginger Shot in every day, but if you’re on and off with them, make sure you at least get plenty in over the winter season. Simply juice half an apple, a chunk of ginger and down in one. If you’re already feeling the sniffles, then make my J'M Sip (otherwise know as a Hug In A Mug). Juice one apple, 1 1/4" of ginger and 1/2 lemon. Half fill a mug with the juice and then top up with some hot water, a teaspoon of honey and a pinch of cinnamon. It’s one of the finest drinks during coughs and colds season and tastes amazing too!
I love a good thriller, The Gift being one of the modern best. I think anything with Jason Bateman in is a winner. Zootropolis was perhaps the best-ever animation film, with Finding Nemo and The Incredibles not far behind. For snacks, I have whatever takes my fancy. I am not ‘good’ 100 per cent of the time and I like to be more relaxed around food now. There is something about popcorn with a movie that is hard to beat. If you are having good nutrition most of the time, your body can easily deal with a little of pretty much anything, so have your juice but be free to have popcorn with a movie too!
WHAT’S ON YOUR MUSIC PLAYLIST AT THE MOMENT? Ed Sheeran, Robbie Williams, James Morrison, Oasis, Elvis, George Michael, McFly, Busted and, of course, a little Gary Barlow and Take That. You can probably see a theme, I love a boy band and love a dude with a guitar. I also like to chill out to those Ministry of Sound Ibiza albums. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF THE DAY AND WHY?
along a beach at sunset is by far the best time of the day.
It depends what’s happening. I like the mornings as you never know what the day will bring and I love waking up, exercising and getting ready for the day. If I am in a warm country, then walking
YOU ARE ONLY ALLOWED ONE JUICE FOR A MONTH – WHAT IS IT? Easy, Turbo Charge Smoothie – it’s the daddy of all blends, for sure!
There are so many, it’s hard to say ;-) Looking back, making the decision to send my first manuscript into HarperCollins was a pretty good decision as it started everything. Building Juicy Oasis, even though we didn’t have the money, was also a great decision. Then there was the decision to make my Super Juice Me! documentary and the decision I made almost two decades ago to Juice The World. I also made a decision to speak at a corporate event over 14 years ago, which is when I met my Katie, so I’d say that was a pretty great decision too! So, as you can see, it’s almost impossible to pick a single one.
YOU’VE GOT HOME UNEXPECTEDLY LATE AND NEED A QUICK DINNER – WHAT WOULD IT BE? Stuffed wholemeal warm pittas with avocado, spinach, watercress, rocket, sunblush tomatoes, feta cheese and some homemade basil pesto – simple but delicious!
