EDITOR’S LETTER

Juicy greetings READ

No surprise that my recommended read is Harry Judd’s Get Fit, Get Happy. Harry focuses on how to use exercise as a tool to get both mentally and physically fit.

WATCH

Take Your Pills, just released on Netflix, is worth a watch. Like most documentaries in this genre, it has its flaws, but it’s eyeopening to see just how many people are being diagnosed with ADD and consequently take mind-altering prescription drugs.

LISTEN

Not McFly’s most recent, but for me still their best. I love the feel-good element of this album and its pure, raw energy. Albums like this keep you young and it features one hell of a drummer… none other than our cover star, Harry Judd! Welcome to the summer 2018 edition of Juiced! magazine. We are blessed to have über-fit, drummer extraordinaire and Strictly Come Dancing champion Harry Judd as our cover star. I was lucky enough to meet Harry and his lovely wife, Izzy, when they visited Juicy Oasis. Harry, of course, is most famous for being a member of McFly and later McBusted. McFly formed in 2003 and it was the film Back To The Future which inspired the band’s name after Michael J Fox’s character, Marty McFly. I’ve played their music at our retreats since we opened. At the first group rebounding class I took at Juicy Mountain, it was McFly’s music which got us all smiling and bouncing high. To say it was surreal to see Harry himself joining in with a class and bouncing to the awesome McFly track That Girl is somewhat of an understatement. Harry takes his fitness very seriously, mental as well as physical, and has publicly spoken about being prone to anxiety and other mental health issues. In his bestselling book, Get Fit, Get Happy, Harry shows how you can use exercise and nutrition as tools to tackle mental-health problems. Read all about Harry’s story in our exclusive interview on page 20. You’ll also find my taste of summer picks, where I share some of my favourite recipes for the season. I finally get on my juice box and have the right to reply to the headline-grabbing, uninformed juicy naysayers out there. Plus there’s real life inspirational stories, the results of January’s global Super Blend Me! Challenge and much, much more. Don’t forget, Juiced! magazine is FREE to download from iBooks and Issuu, so spread the word and help to make the world a lighter and healthier place to be. Sharing is caring, as they say!

JUICY NEWS UPDATES FROM THE WORLD OF JUICING AND BEYOND

Photo: Anna Beswick

It’s our boy! We’re raising our juices and sending huge congratulations to Jason and Kate on the arrival of their gorgeous son, JJ. Their bundle of joy came into the world in the early hours of Sunday 15 April and needless to say mum and dad are smitten with the little fella.

Juice Master fans from around the world were quick to congratulate the new family on social media, with many of Jason’s celebrity pals sending their love and best wishes. With JJ enjoying the finest juice in the world, breast milk, mother and baby are thriving.

Looking hot but super chilled

Gary Barlow hangs out at Juicy Oasis

Music mega-star Gary Barlow took a well-earned break at Juicy Oasis earlier this year and caught up with Juice Master Jason Vale at his retreat. Although Gary has described Juicy Oasis as his go-to place for ‘me time’, he’s certainly no slouch and made the most of his time enjoying a week of healthy nutrition and exercise. The singer even tried out Juicy Oasis’ new cyrotherapy chamber and, as you can see from our snaps, he enjoyed the invigorating chill-out session. It’s an über-cool treatment that makes everyone feel like a superstar. During his stay, Jason created a special blend for Gary to enjoy

08

just before he goes onstage while he’s on tour – the energyboosting drink was given a big thumbs up by Mr Barlow who says he will be packing his blender when he takes to the road again. Gary also made time to chat with Jason for the Juice Master’s first v-cast (it’s like a podcast, only more visual!) which will be appearing on Jason’s YouTube Juice Tube channel, so be sure to subscribe to be among the first to hear the guys’ up-closeand-personal conversation. As the sun set on Gary’s week at Juicy Oasis, the guys grabbed a final snapshot to mark the occasion. Come back soon, Gary!

Super Blend Me! hits #1 #1, #1, #1 – Juice Master Jason Vale’s Super Blend Me! soared to the top of the charts when it was released in January, with the book taking the number one spot in the juice and smoothies category, and the app hitting the top of the paidfor android and iPhone charts. Pipping Deliciously Ella and Jamie Oliver to the top spot, Super Blend Me! joined nine other Juice Master apps in the chart for the same week – an amazing achievement. During the launch, Jason gave interviews to Radio 2’s Steve Wright

JUICY NEWS

and Radio X’s Chris Moyles, and even Radio 2 breakfast show presenter Chris Evans gave a shout-out and thumbs up to the Juice Master, saying he was ‘on the same healthy page’. If you haven’t already done so, order a copy of Jason’s brilliant Super Blend Me! book at juicemaster.com or download the app from the App Store or Google Play. Best men at The Best You Expo

Creating a bit of magic Mum was the word when Jason called the lovely Janie on Mother’s Day to tell her she had won a week at Juicy Oasis. Currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer for a second time, Janie was nominated by her daughter, Charlotte, in the Juice Master’s Mother’s Day competition to win a stay for two. Our hearts went out to the mum who raised three children singlehandedly, fundraises for charities and has stayed positive throughout. Jason said, “I was delighted to be able to spread a little extra magic on Mother’s Day and we’re looking forward to welcoming Janie to Juicy Oasis.”

Juice Master Jason Vale headlined at The Best You Expo on 15-16 February and shared his inspiring juicy journey at the personal development show, now in its third year. Jason told delegates how he ditched cigarettes, alcohol and junk food for freshly-made juice and exercise to get the healthy life he wanted. While at the show, Jason bumped into celebrity reality star Callum Best who has similarly transformed his lifestyle, ditching his demons to go from self-confessed bad boy to healthy living hero.

DON’T FORGET TO SIGN UP FOR JUICE MASTER’S SUMMER SUPER JUICE ME! CHALLENGE Taking place from 14-20 May, Jason will lead the challenge which is the perfect way to kick-start the season. Sign up at bigjuicechallenge.com and, if you need to get in shape sharpish, turn to page 10 for more advice on getting juiceready for summer.

JUICY INTERVIEW

Back and looking hotter than ever, McFly’s Harry Judd is on a mission to encourage us all to take care of our mental and physical health

F

or every fan that has screamed in adulation as he has performed with his band mates in McFly and McBusted, or marvelled as he swept the dance floor before taking the Strictly Come Dancing glitter ball trophy home, it seems hard to believe that Harry Judd could ever be less than ready to take on anything that life can throw at him.

But as Harry ventures into his next career as an inspiring fitness star with a mission to have us exercise to boost both mind and body, he has revealed his own story of how, when life has been less than stellar, he has struggled with mental-health issues. As he joins us for today’s shoot in central London, Harry is relaxed, warm and – despite the early start – decidedly un-pop star in behaviour. In fact, a mid-morning coffee won’t even tempt him, choosing instead to enjoy one of Juice Master’s new Super Blend Me! ready-made bottles to give him a boost. Although he’s dressed down in jeans, it’s impossible to miss that Harry is in incredible shape with his T-shirt framing bulging biceps and honed pecs. The day before our interview he was on the road, cycling with Zoe Ball during her Sport Relief challenge. As he talks about taking on hills with ease, it’s clear that his peak physique is matched by super levels of fitness, undoubtedly the result of his latest project, Get Fit, Get Happy. The title is a great summation of Harry’s simple belief that, whatever your age, shape or current state of fitness, exercise can help you look and – more importantly – feel better. In fact, the very reason why Harry is so passionate about exercise is because it is important to him on a very personal level. In Get Fit, Get Happy, he tells his own story, from talented childhood cricket player, to band member on tour and even Hollywood film star. While these were undoubtedly good

20

times, in the book Harry shares that he suffers from anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and that, as his pop career rocketed, he tried to stifle and conquer these problems with drugs and alcohol. At his lowest point, Harry was an exhausted wreck and had to seek counselling to help him quit alcohol and cannabis addictions. The book follows his journey to recovery and the one thing that has remained a constant as he tackled addiction, learnt to manage his symptoms and get his life back in order, has been exercise. Swapping nicotine for a run in a bid to quit smoking, his last vice, Harry writes about how exercise and good nutrition have become his constant supports and enable him to manage the feelings of anxiety or OCD when he feels them creeping up on him.

DAILY BLEND

Part of his routine is a daily hit of fresh fruit and veggies, and he starts each day with his young daughter, Lola, by blending up a smoothie for the pair to enjoy together. “I have a naturally fast metabolism,” he says, “and I know I need good nutrition to keep me going, so I make sure I get the veggies – my go-to blend is half an avocado, strawberries or blueberries, lemon and a handful of spinach.” Harry has also recently tried the Juice Master Delivered Super Blend Me! plan, enjoying the nutrient-packed, ready-made blends, which are perfect when life’s busy. “I loved them!” says Harry. “My favourite was the Creamy Tahini which tastes so good – the blends are great as they just give you a bit more when you’re working out and as active as I am.” While there are plenty of Insta-fit stars posting jaw-dropping workouts and incredible yoga poses online, what makes Get Fit, Get Happy different is it is accessible and inclusive. There are photographs of Harry and his mum working out, with exercises for different levels of ability, and you won’t find a chic gym or Californian mountain shot in sight. Harry’s

to fitness. “Everything else in the fitness area is focused on being hyper-fit and going to the gym,” says Harry, “but when people start to get into exercise that can be incredibly intimidating. It’s just as easy to workout at home or in the garden and you can use your own body weight instead of expensive equipment. The main obstacles to exercise are time, money, motivation and, I would add, intimidation. I wanted to create a book that doesn’t require any equipment, with exercises that can be broken into short, 10-minute blocks. I’m a busy parent, and I know how difficult it can be to squeeze in a run on some days, so there are exercises that fit in around daily life – hanging out with the kids, in the office, even at the bus stop. “In some ways, I’ve had a strange life with lots of opportunities such as being in two mega-bands, doing Strictly... My wife, Izzy, who is a professional musician, is similar in that we don’t have 9-5 jobs. But we have two young children, Lola and Kit, and the same time pressures as everyone else, and sometimes need to find the motivation to exercise. However, I know how positive I feel when I workout, and why it’s so important for my mental health as well as my body.”

JUICY OASIS

The celebrity couple spent time with Juice Master Jason Vale at Juicy Oasis

22

before Izzy conceived Lola through IVF, and it gave them both a better understanding of the benefits of juicing. “It was beautiful and a real experience, I loved it and would like to go back,” says Harry. “Jason is such a positive influence and a fantastic spokesman for health. A lot of what he does is a psychological thing and being at Juicy Oasis was a brilliant opportunity to focus on nutrition. Initially I found it hard, but after a couple of days your body feels amazing and you have incredible energy. I remember playing football with Jason and we were dripping with sweat, but he has boundless energy. He’s so charismatic and has a natural gift for helping others. “A good goal for me is balance and sometimes I need something extreme to kick-start me as I’m an all-or-nothing person. Izzy’s the same and the retreat was a great way to get my nutrition on track. I’m not perfect, but I’ve found a balance in both my health and my life, and I want to help other people to achieve this too. It’s not about going to the gym five days a week, it’s about starting, finding your own level and developing from there.” As part of the research for Get Fit, Get Happy, Harry met with experts including consultant cardiologist Professor Sanjay Sharma who is medical director for the London Marathon. He also spoke with former Gladiator and GP Dr Zoe Williams who works with teenage girls to encourage them to exercise in adult life. And Harry also met Dr Peter Lovatt – aka ‘Dr Dance’ – who studies the psychological effects of dance, something Harry experienced during his Strictly run. “I discovered that my instinct about physical and mental health being intertwined is true,” he says. “A lot of people are put off exercise by the competitive nature of sport and even training, but you just need to do the best you can do for you. Anxiety and OCD are my Achilles’ heel, but when I exercise I’m happy and forget

them. Health and nutrition are good ways to focus on the positives and leave the negatives behind.” •

JASON GETS ON HIS

JUICE BOX! Jason takes to his Juice Box (like a soapbox, just juicier!) for his right to reply to the juice naysayers I am increasingly fed up with the Insta-health and fitness bloggers/vloggers who use their social media channels to attack juicing and, in particular, myself. Over 20 years, I’ve got used to being battered by the ill-informed, and usually I just let it ride. However, there is a growing number of social media ‘health experts’ posting mistruths yet presenting them as ‘facts’, and I feel it’s time to have a right to reply. Here's a post that triggered me to get on my Juice Box. This is the headlinegrabbing nonsense I’m talking about, which triggered the following debate...

RIGHT TO REPLY

H

is post pushed all the right buttons and got the exact reaction he wanted from his loyal followers. Comments like, 'F**k yes, tell it like it is', and 'Great post mate, can’t get enough of these comparisons!' Such comments are great for his ego and undoubtedly gave him the significance he clearly craved that day. However, as I alluded to in my original response to him – and what I want to make really clear here - he hadn’t actually read the book he was so confidently condemning. I know! So, this aggressive, expletive, headline-grabbing post is focused on a book he hasn’t even read. It's like me giving a review of a film I have only seen the poster for! The greatest irony is when he goes on to say, 'My goal is to provide people with facts…' Yes, he did say 'facts’. I don't know how you can provide people with fact-based information when you haven’t even read the subject matter but hey, what do I know?

straight. Otherwise, my approach, the approach that may just turn someone’s life around, will be ignored all because of this so called ‘expert’.

What is it going to take for people to realise that 5 days of consuming juice is NOT going to solve 20 years of being overweight or obese, NOT going to 'cleanse' you and NOT going to kick-start anything remotely meaningful.

First up, let’s deal with the, 'nothing sustainable has been learned' comment. If you have read the book under fire, or indeed any of my books, you will know one of the main things I deal with, in quite some detail, is what to do after an initial kick-start juice diet. It is one of the most important things I teach and one of the reasons why so many people go on to turn their health around after following one of my programmes (and that is a fact!).

There are many who argue (as he tries to), that a juice diet isn’t sustainable, but who said it was? Who has ever said you can live on nothing but juices or blends every day for the rest of In his first post, he commented on my your life? I certainly haven’t. My juice/ 5-day juice diet: blend plans are a short-term kickstart which can act, when followed properly and when 'But what happens 5 days after that? all the information is 5 weeks after? 5 years? Nothing, because actually read, as a real nothing sustainable is learned. You still catalyst for positive don’t know how to control weight by eating life-long diet and health changes. normal food. You are still unaware of WHY

you are overweight.'

It’s difficult to know where to start, due to the sheer absurdity of what this guy has posted. Unfortunately, many of his followers will believe this crap, assuming (understandably) that he’s done his homework and therefore basing his argument on ‘fact’. Which is why I’ve had to say something and why I feel compelled to set the record

What tends to happen when anyone follows one of my juice/blend plans, is your cravings usually change massively by the end. Meaning the vast majority of people (especially those who actually read my books or watch my coaching videos), crave good nutritious food come the end of their juice experience. Despite this fact, @thefitnesschef ended his post with:

The utterly ill-informed, spouting claptrap like this really get my goat. Once again, he uses language like ‘poorly advised’ and ‘misleading’ – this from a guy who, let's not forget, has totally ripped apart a book he hasn’t even read (have I mentioned that yet? You know the fact he hasn’t read the book?) I mean, that’s not at all ‘poorly advised’ or ‘misleading’ to his followers at all! He also finishes with the statement:

‘We should be better than this. We should be educated.’ Oh, the irony once again. Comments like, ‘It won’t kick-start anything remotely meaningful' simply illustrates his sheer lack of research into my work and this subject. I don’t have either the time or the space here to share the stories of the many thousands of people who have seen long-term changes through juicing. People contact me daily to tell me their juicing success stories, and often one of my books, juice plans or Super Juice Me! documentary have sparked something within them which has made a difference to their outlook and helped them to move forwards with their health in some way. I could share numerous examples of incredible success from around the world, but here are just a few examples...

31

JUICING A SHORT-TERM FIX? I BEG TO DIFFER...

This is Neil, who kicked off the healthy lifestyle he now leads by reading my 7-Day Juice Challenge book. As a result, he has gone on to drop over 70lbs, his IBS has gone, he’s now asthma-free and runs marathons, but again ‘nothing meaningful’ clearly!

This is Niki, who completed my 7-Day Juice Challenge. She went on to follow the after-plan, as advised, and has gone on to drop 40lbs – she looks and, most importantly, feels amazing. But clearly this isn’t anything ‘remotely meaningful’.

This is Charlie. Six stones lighter (that’s a whopping 84lbs lost). Her skin is a million times better as you can clearly see from the pictures she kindly sent us, but again, ‘nothing meaningful’.

Emma, is seven stones lighter (98lbs) and as you can see, her transformation is, quite literally, huge. However, this shows no evidence of ‘long-term change’ or anything ‘meaningful’.

I have had thousands of these stories sent to me over the years from people who have completed one of my short-term juice diets, followed the long-term advice given and gone on to achieve monumental changes with regards to their weight and overall

32

health. I wish I had space to print them all but they would take up several magazines. This is why I get so frustrated when people like @ thefitnesschef post complete and utter nonsense without doing their research. It’s stupid at best and

incredibly harmful at worst. Now, it’s bad enough when regular Insta-users spout misleading and false information, but when you have Insta-doctors doing the same thing, it makes the matter even worse...

RIGHT TO REPLY

DETOX DEVILS

J

anuary is usually the time when certain people start criticising anyone using the word ‘detox’, but doctors and dieticians in particular seem to get a little bit shirty! Indeed, @thefitnesschef – in the example post at the start of this article – uses a picture of a liver opposite a picture of my book to illustrate that it’s the various organs that ‘detox’ the body and not things like juices. A belief that is shared by @thefoodmedic as communicated in her January post earlier this year:

SHEER RUBBISH

What people like Dr Hazel Wallace (aka @thefoodmedic) and @thefitnesschef don’t seem to understand is that I agree with them on this matter! Juices themselves, don’t ‘detox’ the body, it is the organs that do the ‘detoxing’. However, what I would argue is, that those organs often can’t cope with the sheer volume of rubbish they have to deal with on a daily basis and for that reason, are completely unable to keep up. I was covered from top-to-toe in psoriasis and eczema, was badly asthmatic, smoked 2-3 packets of cigarettes a day, drank shed-loads of alcohol daily and was as big as a house – clearly my organs weren’t exactly keeping up with all the ‘detoxing’! When I stopped putting rubbish into my body and had only freshly extracted juices for a while, it gave my organs a chance to catch up and do their job effectively. So I agree, juices alone don’t ‘detox’ the body, but when you stop eating an excess of rubbish and feed your cells what they are biologically designed to thrive on, it gives your organs the space to do

what they are designed to do – detox. My incredible mother smoked heavily and ended up being diagnosed with stage four lung cancer. If the lungs are capable of doing ‘all the detoxing’ for you, then why isn’t she still here? She’s not here because the lungs can only do so much cleaning every day. If the workload exceeds capacity, then clearly a price will eventually be paid. I can breathe naturally, but if someone were to lightly squeeze my throat, my body would be unable to function as it normally does. The moment that they ease off the squeeze, I can breathe normally again. In the same way, if you ease off the copious amounts of junk food and drink going into your body, you will allow your system to ‘breathe’

or ‘detox’ once again. The other main issue is how people can get so caught up on a particular word, especially when the general meaning of that word has, without question, changed over the years. If you were to ask people what ‘going on a detox’ means to them, the vast majority would answer ‘a period of time where you avoid junk foods and drinks and put some goodness inside you’. So, when someone says they are ‘going on a juice detox’, the vast majority of people understand that to mean living on nothing but fresh juice for a week and not consuming rubbish. Few think that ‘juicing removes toxins’, as is often argued by those opposed to anyone using the word. I tried to explain this to Dr Hazel (@foodmedic) when I replied to her post...

33

I thought it was a polite response, showing I was on the same side and that I agree with a lot of the ‘detox’ claims. For example, ‘detox’ patches and teas are clearly BS and frustrate me as much as they do people like Dr Hazel. I thought I made a good case for myself, especially given the limitations of Instagram. However, clearly I was wrong when she replied with... SUBSCRIBE TO JASON VALE'S JUICE TUBE CHANNEL AT... YOUTUBE.COM/USER/JUICEMASTERJASONVALE 34

RIGHT TO REPLY Oh good Lord, where do I start? I think the sentence, 'I am well aware there is an obesity epidemic but the answer is not through fad diets which serve no long-term benefit, lead to poor digestion, encourage disordered eating, and put people at risk of nutritional deficiencies – not to mention the impact on mental health' is a good place to start...

...well, Dr Hazel please meet Kelly Gill... Kelly is now asthma-free, IBS-free, epilepsy-free and excess weight-free. What part of her story is a ‘fad’ or ‘serves no long-term benefits’? The irony is Kelly had IBS before she started juicing but now doesn’t. So how has juicing caused poor digestion? She had poor digestion before, not after! Dr Hazel also mentions juicing will 'encourage disordered eating,' but it was disordered eating that caused her to become ill in the first place! Dr Hazel goes on to say that juicing will negatively impact mental health, yet Kelly is so much happier since she started juicing.

I

could fill this entire magazine with testimonials from people whose lives have changed dramatically after an initial juice ‘detox’ diet. This is why I get frustrated when people slag off juicing, as it can prevent the people who really need help, from trying something really simple to help themselves. We also need to understand that different approaches work for different people because we are of course different. All the juice naysayers do is cause potential harm by putting people off trying this approach, especially doctors as people tend to listen to them more than the lay person, even if they are wrong (as they were for years with the advice to avoid fat at all costs and increase grains). If the headline-grabbing, insta-brigade actually did their research, they would see I cover food addiction, how to

overcome it, what to expect when doing a juice diet and, more importantly, what to do afterwards so as not to undo the benefits they are already experiencing. The maddest thing is that we are talking about freshly extracted juice. The juice that comes from plant foods designed for human consumption. We’re not talking about blending bloody Pringles!

on Instagram. She usually gives good, sound advice and knows her stuff but unfortunately went on the attack and made false accusations about what happens when people do a juice diet. I agree there are some terrible juice plans out there with no after-care advice, but that’s not the work I have been doing for over 20 years.

We are in a crazy situation where if you tell someone you’re going on a juice diet they ask if you’ve checked with your GP first, yet tell them you’re going to Vegas on a blowout and no-one bats an eyelid.

Instagrammers have a huge voice, a voice that didn’t exist when I started out. A voice we all dreamed of having back in the day. I just wish they’d use it to attack the real villains, those making people fat and ill – the junk food and drink industry along with many aspects of Big Pharma. We can attack each other until the cows come home, but our energy needs to go to the cause of the problem, not the people trying to help.

It's a shame as I like Dr Hazel. I have read her book and follow her

I have more to say, but not the space so subscribe to my YouTube channel, Juice Tube, to hear my full rant. •

SUPER BLEND ME!

WE TOOK THE

SUPER BLEND ME! CHALLENGE Earlier this year, Juice Master Jason Vale challenged fans to a week of his Super Blend Me! plan – the results for many were amazing. Here, three Super Blend Me! superstars share their success stories

SUPER BLEND ME!

HEALTH REBOOTED

SBM! IN E R N

Super Blend Me! got Kerry’s diet back on track… and her friends and family blending too! After spending December travelling in Southeast Asia before launching headlong into Christmas and New Year, Kerry Finlay was in desperate need of a health kick – and the Super Blend Me! Challenge was the perfect solution. “I did Jason’s 28-day juicing challenge in 2015 with a friend and we lost lots of weight and felt fantastic afterwards. I continued using his juicing recipes, but doing it for a long, sustained period was tough in terms of fitting it into my daily routine as I work long shifts as a paramedic. When I heard about the Super Blend Me! Challenge, I thought it sounded perfect. “I was travelling in Southeast Asia before Christmas when I got an email about Jason’s new book. I immediately preordered it, ready for when I got home, and sent an email to my friend Fiona to say, ‘We should do this!’ In Thailand and Laos, I was eating a lot of noodles and rice and having a beer every night. Then I got back and it was straight into Christmas and New Year. To be honest, by

38

January, I was desperate to get started. I wanted to feel healthy again. STICK WITH IT “My friend Fiona and I decided to do 28 days of blending and really go for it – doing it together was a huge incentive. She lives in Cyprus and we constantly messaged each other. We decided to spend week three together in the sunshine as we thought it would be the time we might be most likely to break. Being together really helped, and we would have been so angry with ourselves if we had given up at that point. “It wasn’t just us who did the challenge – my mum, sister and brother-in-law joined in for ten days and we had a WhatsApp group to keep us motivated. It was much easier doing it with support from one another. “On the second day of the challenge, I went to bed with a headache. I think it was because my diet had been so extreme in the weeks before that it was a bit of a shock to

the system. But then I just felt really, really good. I was so full of energy and a little giddy with it – I told everyone at work I was on a ‘blend’ high! “My skin was better, I was sleeping really well and didn’t feel so bloated. I lost 15lbs and Fiona lost 21lbs in four weeks and we felt fantastic. I also exercised throughout the challenge, maintaining my routine of weights and cardio which a lot of people were sceptical about, as they didn’t think I would have enough energy. “The Super Blend Me! app really helped, as I could put in the blends I was having for the coming days and it automatically added the ingredients to a shopping list. The blends are excellent, they filled me up and tasted good! “Since I finished the challenge, I have reintroduced healthy food, but I am still blending every day and Fiona and I are ready for his next challenge.”

Louise’s diabetic nurse was so impressed by her results on the Super Blend Me! Challenge, she asked her to give a talk on the impact a healthy diet can make on managing the condition. Inspiring, confident and on a long-term juicing journey, we salute you, Louise!

‘ HOLD THE STATIN!’ Super Blend Me! helped to improve Louise’s diabetes Louise Dalton took the Super Blend Me! Challenge and lost 15lbs in three weeks. As a Type 1 diabetic, the plan also had a huge impact on her health. “I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes 48 years ago and over the years I have tried many things to lose weight and manage my condition. After Christmas, my weight had crept up so I decided to try Jason’s Super Blend Me! Challenge. I found the plan easy to follow and it was the healthiest weight loss I have ever had.

40

“As a Type 1 diabetic, I added two daily SOS allowances, if my blood sugar levels dipped, and occasionally munched on a celery or carrot stick if I felt the urge to eat real food. “After 21 days, I lost 15lbs and my cholesterol level reduced from 5.9 to 4.8. I felt lighter, invigorated and full of energy. My confidence and self-esteem were boosted and I felt greater clarity. But the biggest impact was on my diabetes. They tested my HbA1c levels, which indicate how well your diabetes

is being controlled, and it went from 71mmol to 63mmol, and my insulin dropped from 40 to 16 units. A few months before the challenge, my consultant suggested I move on to a statin, but I didn’t want to. I was excited about what Jason said on this issue and decided to give the blends a go. My consultant wasn’t convinced, but I am doing so well I am still not on that statin. I will continue to incorporate juices and blends into my diet and have learned the strategies to live a healthier and lighter life.”

to make sure I was a candidate for the surgery. I was finally scheduled for the operation, but the hospital called and said they were postponing all surgeries because of the Christmas holidays. It turned out to be a good thing. I was all ready for the procedure and would have gone through with it, but then perhaps I would never have heard of Jason Vale and his amazing Super Blend Me! Challenge. “My rescheduled surgery date was 25 January but the Super Blend Me! Challenge began on 8 January, and I reasoned I should see what results I would get. In ten days, I lost 11lbs and felt the mental fog clear from my brain and that was awesome.

GASTRIC SURGERY CANCELLED The Super Blend Me! Challenge gave Scott a new start to life The Super Blend Me! Challenge was life-changing for Scott Hodge. Such was the impact of Jason’s philosophy, Scott cancelled planned surgery and is transforming his diet to improve his physical and mental wellbeing. “I had never done any of Jason’s programmes before, but I was looking for something to watch one night when I stumbled on his documentary, Super Juice Me! I was amazed at the results of this experiment, and subsequently discovered the Super Blend Me! Challenge starting in the January. “It’s hard to express how

important discovering Jason was in my life. I was scheduled for bariatric sleeve surgery on 28 December 2017; I have struggled with my weight most of my adult life, and after injuring my back in 2012, and the forced inactivity that followed, I gained 30-40 pounds on top of my already overweight body. Through good chiropractic care, my back got better, but I was never able to get a handle on my weight, so my doctor suggested surgery. “I felt I had no other choice, so I relented after years of resisting the idea. I spent the whole spring and summer of 2017 going through test after test

•••

SBM! IN E R N

“I called the nurse and told her I wanted to cancel the surgery, and I haven’t regretted that decision one bit” “I like the ’Turbo Charge Super Blend’ and the ’Blue and Green Protein Queen’ blends best. I’m partial to the green ones and the reason I can enjoy them is the combination of flavours in Jason’s recipes that seem to bring out the good in every ingredient. These recipes, although full of green veggies, taste great! “I can’t imagine life without blends now. We blend at least once every day, and sometimes twice. There are days when we just feel like blending for each meal, but that’s hard when we’re feeding our two kids as well! Jason’s Super Blend Me! Challenge really has been a true life-changer.”

SEASONAL RECIPES

Spicy Mint ‘n’ Avo Veggie Burger If ever there was a food made for al fresco dining, it’s the burger. Ideal finger food, everyone loves them with no plates needed. This meat-free version is just the thing when hungry guests arrive and time is short. SERVES 2 Almonds 40g or 1 handful Sunflower seeds 1 tbsp Pumpkin seeds 1 tbsp Peas (fresh or frozen) 100g/3.5oz Butter beans (canned) 100g/3.5oz Fresh mint 30g or 1 large handful Ground cumin 1 pinch Cayenne pepper 1 pinch Himalayan rock salt 1 pinch Olive oil 1 tbsp Avocado (ripe) ½ Gluten-free buns 2 (optional, or enjoy a ‘no bun’ burger) Beef tomato 1 Romaine lettuce 1 small Ground black pepper 1 pinch Lime (juice of) 1 Wooden skewers 2

Put the almonds, sunflower and pumpkin seeds in a food processor and blitz until they turn into ‘flour’. Keep a handful of the ‘flour’ to one side to coat the finished burgers. Put the peas, butter beans, mint, cumin, cayenne pepper, salt and the remaining ‘flour’ into the food processor and blend. Divide the mixture in half and using your (clean!) hands make into two burgers. Place the reserved ‘flour’ on a chopping board or plate, lay the burgers on top and lightly coat both sides. Place in the freezer for 10 minutes to firm up. Put the oil in a frying pan and place over a medium heat. Add the burgers and cook for 6 minutes on each side. If using a bun, spread the avocado flesh like ‘butter’ on the buns, or if going for the ‘no bun’ option, simply slice the avocado. Cut the beef tomato into two good-size slices. Arrange your burger or ‘no bun’ burger in any way you choose using the tomato, lettuce, avocado and burger. Add a pinch of ground black pepper and a squeeze of lime. Push a wooden skewer through the middle and BOOM, your burger is done!

45

SEASONAL RECIPES

Super-pimped, Superfood Caesar When the heat gets too much, salad has to be the ‘go to’ staple throughout summer. Caesar is one of our favourites and you won’t find a tastier (or healthier) version than this. SERVES 2 Pumpkin seeds 30g or 1 handful Himalayan rock salt 2 generous pinches Curly kale 50g or 1 large handful Romaine lettuce 1 small Parmesan or Parmigiano Reggiano* 50g/2oz Cashew nuts 60g or 1 large handful Garlic 1 clove Olive oil 3 tbsps Dijon mustard 1 flat tsp Lemon (the juice of) 1 Heat a dry frying pan over a high heat and add the pumpkin seeds and a pinch of salt. Toast for 1-2 minutes until the seeds brown. Remove the hard stems from the kale. Chop the lettuce into thick slices. Shave the cheese using a vegetable peeler. Put the nuts into a hand blender and blitz until they turn to ‘flour’. Peel the garlic and add to a container with the olive oil, mustard and lemon juice. Blitz for 10 seconds until it forms a sauce. Coat the lettuce and kale with the sauce, sprinkle over the pumpkin seeds and Parmesan cheese. *Leave out if vegan.

46

Tomato & Red Pepper Salsa With A Chilli Kick Veggie sticks and chips are basic table fillers at garden gatherings, but that doesn’t mean they need to be the support act. This punchy, moreish salsa will have everyone reaching for something to dip again and again. SERVES 2 Red onion ½ medium Red pepper ½ medium Red chilli 1 medium Cherry tomatoes 8 (a mix of red, orange and yellow, if possible) Fresh mint 20g or 1 handful Lime (juice of) 1 Himalayan rock salt 1 pinch Remove the ends and skin from the red onion and finely dice. Remove the core and seeds from the red pepper and chop into small pieces. Cut the red chilli in half; remove the top and seeds, before finely dicing. Chop the cherry tomatoes into quarters. Remove the leaves from the mint (discard the stems) and roughly chop. Place all the ingredients in the mixing container of a hand blender or Retro Super Blend and blitz for six pulses. Alternatively, place all ingredients in a mixing bowl and mix vigorously for 1-2 minutes.

Superfood Ice Cream Is there any other food more associated with summer than ice cream? Of course not, but we like things a little more enticing than a '99' when it comes to our frozen dessert of choice. Friends will be stunned you managed to make something so delicious in under a minute! SERVES 2 Bananas 2 medium Blueberries 150g/5oz The day before you make this recipe, peel and freeze the bananas. When you are ready to make the ice cream, remove the frozen bananas from the freezer and leave at room temperature for around 10 minutes. Cut each banana into 4 pieces and place into the container of a hand blender or standard blender along with the blueberries and pulse for 30-60 seconds until it turns into the texture of ice cream.

COLD PRESSED JUICE

Jason's

top tips to get the most from your new Juice Master Cold Press Juicer

1

NEVER PUT YOUR JUICER IN A CUPBOARD If you are serious about making cold press juicing a regular part of your life, never show your juicer the cupboard. If you do, it may never see daylight again! No matter how small your kitchen may be, always make sure your juicer takes pride of place on your work surface. Your Juice Master Cold Press Juicer is the best health insurance you’ll ever invest in.

2

GET A SIEVE IF YOU LIKE TO KEEP THINGS SMOOTH Your Juice Master Cold Press Juicer will produce the finest quality freshly extracted juice. If you prefer a super smooth juice, you may want to consider sieving the juice before drinking it.

50 44

We all know that it's the easiest and finest way to get our daily fruit and veg, but did you know that cold-pressed juice, extracted slowly to get the maximum liquid goodness, offers so much more than other machines? Jason Vale is never one to rest on his laurels and he has developed a new Juice Master Cold Press Juicer which outperforms anything on the market. First up in Jason’s wish list of improvements was a slanted, extra-wide chute with an internal cutting blade, which makes juicing whole fruits and vegetables super easy. Made from coated stainless steel, the Juice Master Cold Press Juicer is as hard-wearing and hard-working as Jason and extracts juice at 65rpm to reduce heat friction and improve the quality of your healthy beverage. Little touches like a drip stop and two large 1,200ml jugs, which come with the machine, make using the Juice Master Cold Press Juicer a dream. What’s more, this mighty machine can make raw nut milks and good-for-you ‘ice cream’ (see Jason’s top tips, overleaf), which makes it this season’s ‘must-have’ kitchen gadget. The Juice Master Cold Press Juicer raises the nutritional juice bar to a new level and is an investment if you’re serious about getting the most nutrition from your fruit and vegetables. The new Juice Master Cold Press Juicer comes with Jason Vale’s Super Juice Me! 28-day juice plan which is packed with recipes and all you need to inspire you on your juicy journey. MIX IT UP WITH MILK Not only does the Juice Master Cold Press make the best juice, it also makes amazing raw plant milks! You can make up a batch and keep it in a fridge for up to three days. Your new juicer’s instruction manual shows you how, or watch the video over at juicemaster.com

COLD PRESSED JUICE

TREAT YOURSELF WITH AN ‘ICE CREAM’ Yes, the Juice Master Cold Press even makes ‘ice cream’… well, natural sorbets. Swap the metal strainer for the sorbet attachment and then simply feed some lightly thawed frozen fruit into the chute and boom, beautiful natural iced desserts. Banana ‘ice cream’ is delicious and so simple to make. Simply freeze some bananas, remove from the freezer and leave to thaw for 5-10 minutes. But a word of warning – never put solidly frozen fruit into your Juice Master Cold Press. Always allow it to defrost slightly – but not too much! I have tried all kinds of frozen fruits, but a simple banana sorbet with a dusting of cinnamon is a brilliantly lush slush!

53

CLEANING MADE EASY The only downside to cold press juicing is having to clean the machine. Personally, given the many health benefits, I have no problems with it but there are ways to make your juicing life a little easier, if this is a bug bear. Option 1: Freeze your juices Instead of having to clean your juicer every time you want a drink, why not make a batch and freeze your juices? That way you only have to clean your juicer once. I tend to have a juicing session on a Sunday, while watching a bit of Netflix. I then take the frozen juices out of the freezer the day before I want to drink them and pop them in the fridge to defrost. Option 2: Semi-clean between juices If you prefer to make your juices fresh every time, pour some warm water into the chute after you've finished juicing (making sure the drip stop is on). Turn the juicer on and allow it to ‘semi auto clean’. Switch off and flip up the drip stop to let the water flow out. Then remove the top part of the juicer ( juicer bowl and lid) and place in your fridge. When you’re next ready to juice, simply remove from fridge, attach to the juicer base and off you go. By choosing the semi-clean option, even if you are on a juice plan and juicing 4-5 times a day, you only have to fully clean the juicer once.

See the all-new Juice Master Cold Press Juicer in action at juicemaster.com 54

Most importantly, NEVER LEAVE YOUR JUICER TO ‘CLEAN LATER’. If you think cleaning a juicer is hassle, try cleaning one after it’s been left out for hours. You have been warned!

STRAWBERRIES Not only is one cup of strawberries said to contain 150 per cent of your RDI of vitamin C, they are also an excellent source of fibre, folic acid, potassium and are rich in anthocyanins, which may help protect the nervous system and blood vessels. Their bright red colour is caused by phytonutrients and flavonoids, used throughout history in medicine to help everything from digestive ailments to skin irritations.

RASPBERRIES

Like strawberries, raspberries are packed with vitamin C, fibre, potassium and folate, as well as phosphorus, calcium and the phytochemical quercetin. The pigments in raspberries are said to help inflammatory conditions, with an arthritis charity recommending them as part of a daily diet. Try this… Lemon and raspberry frozen yoghurt is delicious and healthy. Combine one cup of Greek yoghurt, 12oz frozen raspberries, 1/3 cup lemon juice, 2 tsps lemon zest, plus 3 tbsps honey and blend until smooth. Freeze for two hours and then tuck in.

AMLA

Nutritionists believe amla are one of the best berries that women can eat. They are believed to help balance hormones, in particular oestrogen, easing symptoms of depression, mood swings and food cravings. Known as Indian gooseberries and used in local medicine, they have high levels of vitamin C and antioxidant properties, as well as iron, vitamin B and carotene. Try this… Add a teaspoon of amla powder to a smoothie, stir it into porridge or make raw treats like granola bars with it.

BLUEBERRIES

Some nutritionists believe if you make only one change to your diet, it should be to eat blueberries. Full of antioxidants, vitamins C, K and B6, manganese, fibre, potassium and folate, research has shown that blueberries might help everything from heart disease to memory, balance and co-ordination. Try this… For breakfast, try frozen blueberries swirled into plain yoghurt, as a topping for buckwheat pancakes or stirred into porridge for some natural sweetness.

ACAI

Acai berries boast many benefits – from promoting heart health, aiding weight loss, helping digestion, boosting the immune system and skin, and even reducing allergies. The berry has a large seed in the middle with the remaining fruit packed with nutrients, rich in vitamins A, E and C, as well as calcium, iron, potassium and fibre. Try this… Try an acai breakfast bowl. Blend 4 tbsps acai powder, 1 cup frozen raspberries, 1 cup frozen strawberries, 1 cup almond milk, 1/2 cup spinach leaves and 1 tsp honey. Add banana, almonds, chia seeds, coconut, kiwi or granola.

GOJI

These little red, wrinkly berries have been used in Chinese medicine for thousands of years. Advocates believe they can boost our immune system, protect against heart disease and improve life expectancy. They contain a huge amount of vitamins C, B2 and A, along with numerous antioxidants and amino acids. Try this… Make an energy-boosting superfood trail mix, combining crunchy almonds and walnuts with chewy goji berries, mulberries and golden berries. Add raw cacao nibs for a little extra healthy indulgence.

CAMU CAMU

According to nutritionists, this South American superstar berry is the most abundant source of vitamin C on the planet. It grows in the Amazon rainforest and is used locally for medicinal purposes, with experts claiming it has antiviral properties to help with conditions from cold sores to the common cold. Others extol its virtues as a natural energy booster. Try this… Give your body a refreshing boost with an orange camu camu smoothie. Blend 1.5oz Swiss chard, 2 peeled oranges, 1 tbsp hemp seed, 1 tsp camu camu powder, 1 tbsp goji berries, 1 cup water and 1 cup ice.

THE APPLE

When it comes to freshly extracted juice, apples should always make a showing due to the soluble fibre and sweetness they bring to the table. Pure vegetable juice is often too bitter for most, so the added sweetness of fresh apple is very welcome. The soluble fibre, pectin, also helps to keep things moving! Fibre and sweetness aren’t the only reasons apples have made it into my magnificent seven, they are also loaded with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Apples are a good source of vitamin C and one of the best natural sources of boron, a mineral that is important for building strong bones and helping to prevent osteoporosis. Boron also helps develop sex hormones, is good for brain function and helps to build muscle mass. I always use apples when I make any type of vegetable juice and of course they are the main player in my famous home made lemonade.

2

COOL AS A CUCUMBER

I honestly can’t say enough about this amazing freshly extracted juice. Whenever you prep a juice, make sure this incredible vegetable/fruit gets a showing. It’s one of nature's finest diuretics, incredible for your hair, skin, nails and it’s one ingredient you can almost always buy organic at a good price. You also get more juice from a cucumber than almost any other fruit or vegetable, making it even more cost-effective. They are a fantastic source of copper, potassium, manganese, vitamin C, phosphorus, magnesium, biotin and vitamin B1. Not only can it be juiced, but cucumber also works well in your blender (just use a small amount, so the end result is not too thick). Cucumbers easily made it into my magnificent seven and should always make it into your juices.

3

BEAUTIFUL BEETS

You really can’t beat a bit of beet! Beetroot juice can lower blood pressure, increase energy and is great for your love life. It’s loaded with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and contains 20 times more dietary nitrates than any other fruit or vegetable. At one time in history, beets were used as a primitive type of Viagra! Research has indicated that beets are a rich source of a mineral called boron that is directly linked to the production of sex hormones. There has been extensive research into the nutritional merits of beetroot juice and many athletes use it to improve performance. Beetroot is also a neat way of encouraging little ones to drink vegetable juice – if you juice a load of veggies, add a little apple for sweetness and beetroot for colour, and it’s quite easy to convince them it’s a berry juice. Always make sure you use raw beetroot when juicing – trust me, cooked beetroot juice is not pleasant. In fact the whole point of juicing is to get more ‘live’ raw plant food into your diet, so juicing anything cooked defeats the object entirely.

ROOT OF LIFE

Whether you take this as a separate shot with a little apple, or juice it with other ingredients, freshly extracted ginger juice needs to be part of your daily life. It is loaded with minerals including potassium, manganese, copper and magnesium. It is also high in vitamins C, A and E. Ginger is a natural anti-fungal, antibiotic and antihistamine. If you suffer from allergies and hay fever, make sure you get some ginger in you daily. Ginger helps keep nausea at bay, it’s been used to combat pain, fire up metabolism, reduce inflammation, boost brain power, improve cognitive function and strengthen the immune system. It also adds a little fire to an otherwise bland juice. Ginger is good for arthritis and osteoarthritis, helps indigestion and can even lessen muscle soreness after exercise. I could write a whole book on this wonder root, but you don’t need to study it, you just need to get some in you every day.

TREE OF LIFE

Magnificent is an appropriate word when it comes to this power-house of nutrition. Freshly extracted broccoli juice is loaded with iron which can help in the production of red blood cells, myoglobin and haemoglobin – proteins which carry oxygen and transport it throughout the body. The juice is a rich source of folate, responsible for health functionality of the brain and liver. Loaded with vitamin K which helps the blood coagulate and maintain normal levels of bleeding, it also helps to speed up the healing of wounds. There’s more calcium in broccoli juice than milk and, more importantly, it’s in a form adult humans can utilise and helps to keep bones healthy while fending off conditions like arthritis and osteoporosis. Broccoli juice is rich in manganese which helps to process carbohydrates and proteins. The carotenoids in broccoli juice help to maintain healthy vision. Try to buy organic and use a cold press juicer for maximum benefit.

JUST LEAFING AROUND

Spinach and kale are the main players when it comes to greens for juicing. Personally I tend to use spinach when I am juicing and kale when making blends, although not exclusively. The key here is getting some kind of greens into your juicing life. Spinach belongs to the same family as kale and beets and, like its veggie cousins, contains a multitude of extremely beneficial nutrients. Spinach juice is loaded with amino acids (the building blocks for protein), carotenoids, potassium, iodine, magnesium, iron, Vitamin C, A, E, B complex and K. It is also worth pointing out that nothing on earth would be here without the colour green. Green equals life! I was always told growing up to ‘eat your greens’. I found this hard to do as I am not a fan of eating loads of raw greens, but I can drink them. Greens form part of my magnificent seven and if you juice daily, spinach, kale or both should always play a part.

SMART TARTS

You cannot have a juicing magnificent seven and not include the citrus bad boys. Lemons and limes always play a part in some way in almost every juice I make, but clearly lemons top the bill in my homemade lemonade. I always add a little lemon or lime juice to most of the vegetable juices I make for two reasons. Firstly it’s simply to add what I call a kicker, or a lift. It just adds a little zing to an otherwise possibly bland juice. Secondly it’s to make sure I get the full benefit of the greens. Although spinach is rich in iron, it is often bound with oxalic acid, preventing its absorption in the gut. However, if you have some vitamin C with your spinach, it helps to absorb more of the iron. Unlike oranges, you can juice lemons and limes with the skin on, although I personally remove the skin from lime as it’s too sharp for me, but each to their own.

Fed up with thumping spin sessions, bored of burpees, and turned off by your over-zealous boot camp? Move over HIIT, LISS is a great new way to get healthy, fit and embrace the great outdoors

Summer is the ideal season to start a new exercise routine, and the latest thing to take the fitness world by storm is easy to incorporate into daily life, is the perfect way to spend time outside and won’t feel like exercise at all. Low-intensity steady state (LISS) cardio is the exact opposite to the ever-popular high-intensity interval training (HIIT). Instead of pushing yourself to breaking point for short bursts, you aim for a low level of exertion for a long, continuous period.

62

WHO IS IT GOOD FOR?

LISS is great for those who are at the start of their fitness journey, providing the perfect launchpad to getting fitter in a gradual, safe and easily achievable way, while building confidence and self-esteem. It can be hugely beneficial for those recovering from injury as it doesn’t place a lot of strain on your body. It is also great for those short on time – you can make your cycle to work or daily dog walk part of your total exercise routine.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

For optimum benefit, LISS workouts should last 40-60 minutes, keeping at a target heart rate of 45-60 per cent of our estimated maximal heart rate. Experts believe this is the ideal pace needed for fat-burning and keeping it at that level for an extended period of time can help to kick-start weight loss, increase blood flow and promote oxygen delivery within cells. The more oxygen you can give your body, the more fat you burn.

MIND, BODY AND SPIRIT

Take five Make LISS part of your weekly routine this summer – here are five ways to get active. Nice and easy does it...

SPEED-FREE SPIN Getting on your bike is a great way to get your heart going at the optimum rate and will tone your legs up too. Cycle to work, tackle a moderate mountain-bike track or follow a trail – pedal power is a superb way to get moving.

WATER BABIES Swimming provides a great cardiovascular workout and is ideal for troublesome joints as the water takes the strain. Head to a local pool, outdoor lido or, if you're lucky, the sea, for a dip. Go steady and gradually increase your distance.

BEST FOOT FORWARD A good walk is the easiest and most accessible workout. Walk the dog, go for a hike or simply take a lunchtime stroll. Not only will it burn calories, it will refresh your mind and give you a great vitamin D boost to boot.

CLASS OF 2018 For something different, try a weekly Tai Chi class. A low-impact exercise, when done correctly it raises your heart rate significantly. It also improves flexibility, balance and brings a sense of relaxation and wellbeing.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

A study by the University of Bath found LISS can be as effective as HIIT for weight loss. Two groups exercised five times a week – half intensely and half moderately. After three weeks, both groups had lost the same amount of weight. Another study found that the gentler the fitness approach, the more likely it was to be maintained. So, with the sun shining, it's time to head outside and work a little LISS into your life.

GET YOUR SKATES ON And finally, for a bit of fun, grab a pair of roller blades and head to your local park for some low-impact exercise. It is estimated that half an hour of skating could burn in excess of 200 calories, as well as toning the lower body.

It grows in abundance, can be used in a multitude of ways and has a delicious, refreshing flavour – but it can also ease headaches, tummy aches, sore muscles and more, thanks to its super-medicinal qualities Mighty mint is a humble herb but it boasts super-strength health and beauty benefits. It has been used as an ingredient in folk medicine for centuries and is packed with vitamins and minerals, so how can we use this aromatic plant and what health benefits can it bring?

64

FOUR TO POUR A CLEAR HEAD

There is growing evidence that menthol, derived from peppermint, works as a natural migraine treatment. Studies have shown that applying peppermintoil solution onto the forehead and temples can ease headache pain. Researchers at Newcastle University also tested the pain-relieving properties of Brazilian mint and found that, if consumed as a tea, it was as effective as aspirin-style medicine.

SPOT ON

Mint can already be found in plenty of shop-bought skin products, from toners and cleansers to face masks and balms. Mint is rich in salicylic acid, used in the treatment of chronic acne, so if you have some growing in the garden why not make your own treatment? Crush or grind up a bunch of mint leaves, adding enough rose water to make a paste. Apply it on your face and leave overnight if possible. Even if you don’t have acne, it will help keep your skin cool and oil-free during the summer.

DITCH THE ITCH

Mint is analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anti-spasmodic and has long been used to relieve pain and inflammation. Try massaging peppermint-oil into sore muscles; use a flannel soaked in icy water with a few drops of peppermintoil as a cold compress on the painful area to reduce swelling or add a couple of drops of peppermint, four drops of geranium and four drops of lavender to a warm bath to ease muscle stiffness and pain. It can also ease itching caused by a rash or insect bite – simply grind some mint leaves up, squeeze the juice out and apply to the affected area.

GUT INSTINCT

Whether you have irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or just an upset tummy, a cup of peppermint tea can work wonders. Peppermint is believed to ease stomach cramps due to its antispasmodic properties, help bloating and alleviate gas by increasing bile production, which in turn speeds and eases digestion. There has been a great deal of research into the benefits of using mint to treat IBS. A 2007 Italian study found symptoms were significantly reduced among 75 per cent of patients who took peppermint-oil capsules for a month, and a 2011 Australian study discovered that peppermint could help relieve IBS by activating an ‘anti-pain’ channel in the colon, soothing inflammatory pain in the gastrointestinal tract.

GREAT WEIGHT

The fibre in mint leaves offers many health benefits, including helping to reduce cholesterol levels and lowering our risk of obesity. Mint tea is a naturally low-calorie drink so it can help reduce our overall daily intake. Mint is also said to stimulate the digestive enzymes that absorb nutrients from food and consume fat and turn it into usable energy. By adding mint to your diet, it could mean that more of the fat you eat will be put to good use. •

It is a refreshing drink with countless health benefits – so why not incorporate a delicious mint tea into your daily routine? Here are four 100 per cent organic varieties from Pukka which are sure to be a hit with your taste buds.
