On the streets of Astoria this month, I saw two trends appearing. The first was a cool, European look made up of a palette of muted grays, browns and greens. Earthy and chic, oversized and effortlessly ontrend. But there were also some fashion rebels out and about, like retiree Joe in this punk-influenced denim look and little Kenzy, who combined metallics with rainbow leggings. Understated meets overstated. We're all about the contradictions here in Queens.
Joe is a retiree living in Astoria. I loved his heavy metal band jacket. Fashion has no age limit, kids.

This is Tara Reid — no, not that one. Tara was on her way to work in Manhattan and was killing it in this monochrome meets denim look. Attitude all the way.
Roxanna is a student and was certainly sporting some preppy chic. That green coat with gold buttons looked fabulous. I certainly never looked that good when I was a student...
This is mini fashionista Kenzy, who had stopped with her mom to pick up the ultimate accessory — a falafel! Kenzy stood out from the crowd with her rose gold coat and sneakers paired with rainbow leggings. Her favorite subject in school is math. JANUARY 2017 I BOROMAG.COM

henever a new year rolls around, it’s a reminder to kick ourselves into gear and to do everything we’ve been meaning to get done. We asked our readers and reporters to share their New Year’s resolutions with us on Instagram using the hashtag #bororesolution. Sharing our goals publicly (both on social media and here, in print) just might help us actually accomplish them; after all, we now have 20,000 readers as our accountability buddies! Hopefully, our resolutions will help inspire you, too.

ORO readers might recognize my byline, since I’ve been a longtime writer for the magazine. But what you might not know is that I’m also a certified personal trainer. In my role as a strength coach, there is nothing I love more than helping people feel better, stronger and healthier. So when asked to combine my passions for writing and personal training for the New Year issue, I was thrilled to oblige. I’ve compiled a fitness guide to help you achieve your health goals in 2017. These are five exercises that you can do in your own apartment with household objects such as water jugs or detergent containers. Practicing these movements regularly is a great way to get back into fitness or to supplement workouts you love. How did I pick these five exercises? Ask any fitness professional to name movements that give you the most for your proverbial buck, and you will likely hear some form of the following: a Push, a Pull, a Hinge, a Squat and a Carry. They are natural human movements that have large functional strength carryover and require you to recruit muscles of the entire body. While learning new movement is best done under the guidance of a trainer, because body variations can alter positioning, these exercises can help you get started with all five basic movements at home. As with any physical activity, safety is of primary importance. Exercises with external load can be started with comfortable weight or household items. Awareness and proper form are your friends when looking for results in your workouts. And remember, these movements translate to your everyday activities!

Push Up (Push)
Floor Pull (Pull)
The Push Up can be thought of as a moving plank, utilizing full-body engagement and building core and upper body strength. Both the slow lower and the press up can be worked individually to get comfortable holding the plank position.
You may not have access to a bar, but pull up strength can be built on the ground. The Floor Pull can be visualized as a pull up without gravity, working the upper body and core without load.
1
Starting Position: Start in a tall plank. Hands under shoulders, hands screwed into the floor, abs and glutes engaged, tension felt through the heels. Don’t allow the hips to sag.
2
Slowly lower your body in one piece, keeping your elbows back (no chicken wings), maintaining full-body tension.
3
On the exhale, press the floor away with your hands, returning in one piece to the tall plank position (image 1).
1
Starting Position: Lie face-down on a slick surface (wood, tile, etc.), arms flat above your head in a slight “Y” position. Legs glued together, toes pointed, glutes and abs tight, neck neutral.
2
With your hands and forearms in contact with the floor, drive your elbows toward the hips, pulling your body forward leading with the top of your head.
3
To return to the starting position (image 1), reverse the motion or simply reset.
Hayley Bridgewater is a certified personal trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), a Strong First (SFG-2) kettlebell instructor and a functional range conditioning mobility specialist (FRCms). She is a Precision Nutrition coach (PN1), a somatic exercise coach (SEC), and was in the premier class of certified Wreckbag trainers. Hayley found her way into the strength training field through a long career performing and teaching dance and gymnastics, giving her special interest in endurance athletics. When not in the gym, she immerses herself in the community that she loves as a writer for BORO and is a grateful member of the Sleep No More/McKittrick Hotel family.

Deadlift (Hinge) Everyone picks things up off the floor, so it makes sense that we learn to do it in a way that builds strength safely. Deadlifts are great for hitting the muscles of the posterior chain, improving grip and developing overall strength.
1
Starting Position: Stand with feet hip width apart, kettlebell/object to be lifted lined up with ankles or slightly behind.
2
Breathe in to your belly and hinge your hips back, hands reaching for the bell and loading your lats by imagining that you are “pulling apart” the handle.
3
With the chest forward, press through the floor with your feet and stand up. Exhale as you come to the top position.
Goblet Squat (Squat) One of the most metabolically active movements that you can do, squats will help you burn fat while building the legs and glutes everyone is looking for.
1
Starting Position: Stand with feet shoulder width apart, feet slightly toed out, holding the kettlebell/object into your chest, elbows tucked in (lats engaged).
2
Breathing in, pull yourself slowly down into squat, torso upright, knees tracking toes, aiming your elbows toward the inside of your knees.
3
Engage your abs and drive your feet through the floor to return to standing (image 1).
Farmer’s Carry (Carry)
Ever feel sore or tired after transporting laundry, heavy bags and the like? Practicing loaded carries will make all of your errands easier, make your core and upper body solid and stable, increase endurance and build lower body power.
1
Starting Position: Standing between two heavy items, hinge your hips back; breathe into the belly, and deadlift (see above) the items to stand.
2
With an upright torso (proud chest), shoulders back and away from your ears, keep your abs braced and walk.
3
Increase weight or length of walks as you get comfortable.

A Long Island City nonprofit that allowed teachers to pick up free school supplies at its warehouse this summer is also the material source for a new art exhibit that is inspired by jazz. Michael Kelly Williams, an artist and public school educator for 30 years, used recycled materials found at Materials for the Arts (MFTA). The nonprofit, which is operated by the Department of Cultural Affairs, with support from the Department of Sanitation and Department of Education (DOE), provides free materials to teachers — from binders to paper and computer chairs. His solo exhibition “Found and Funky” debuted on Dec. 15 at the warehouse located at 33-00 Northern Blvd. Williams spent four months scavenging the 35,000-square-foot facility that has more than 40 aisles of materials. The exhibition includes mixed media and assemblage works and will be on view until April 8. “Found” represents the “affirmation in discovering new objects” while the term “Funky” is used to “pay homage to a popular jazz term meant to convey praise of an art piece having achieved its highest form.” Williams includes references to popular jazz musicians throughout the exhibit including Eric Dolphy, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk and Pheeroan akLaff. “My work expresses who I am, and I feel I’m working out of various traditions,” Williams said in a statement. “There is a strong

folk art tradition in my hometown of Detroit utilizing found objects. Stylistically there is now a synthesis of all I have studied. I am reaching for a unique vision in my work yet one that is linked in tradition. My reoccurring themes are music, myth, spirituality and poetry.”
Kelly used a range of materials for his work including cowrie shells, a film canister and cables. His piece “We See,” which was named after a Thelonious Monk song, is mounted on a wooden ophthalmologist sign. The arrangement of materials “cohere into an interpretation of Monk’s ancient, rhythmical sensibility as well as dissonant elements and a wry sense of humor.” The MFTA artist residency program gives artists production assistance, free studio space and materials for the warehouse. Williams’ work has been shown in galleries across the United States and countries such as China and Morocco. To view more of his work, visit michaelkellywilliams.com.

Your iTunes library could probably use an update, and the start of 2017 is a great excuse to discover some new music. Here are four local musicians and bands that you should check out. Doris Cellar D

oris Cellar is an Astoria songstress whose mix of R&B, electronica and indie rock melds together, becoming a unique pop creation that reminds us of early Robyn and makes us want to lace up our roller skates and get moving. Growing up in the neighborhood definitely influenced Cellar’s sound. “Since Astoria has always been multicultural, I grew up listening to R&B, rock, soul and whatever else neighbors would blast out of their windows: Greek, Indian, salsa, Hot 97, KRock, Z100 and SOU [death metal],” she said. “We grew up listening to all the sounds of the world because that’s what Astoria is — we are every culture combined into one.” Each track of love and loss takes complex instrumentation and renders them raw again. Cellar remembers the analog waves of yesterday fondly. “I grew up in a time and place before the internet when we were lucky to have it all on our radios,” she said. “I would sit there with a tape and wait for my jam to come on so I could hit record on my cassette player.” In 2017, Cellar will embark on her first European tour as a solo artist to promote her new album, which she mixed at home. In this New Year filled with uncertainty, we asked Doris what her thoughts were on the current political climate. “I tend to think positive because I think fear is a beautiful thing,” she told us. “Fear can make us change so fast we wouldn’t even know what hit us. It’s not great to be motivated by it all the time, but when it strikes, our instincts drive us in the right direction. It’s a great time for real change. Change is good and necessary.”

five-piece band chock-full of playful and soulful harmonies driven by a steady rock ‘n’ roll beat, Shannon Söderlund is local band worth checking out. “We toe the line of gospel, jazz and blues, but lean most heavily toward rock,” lead singer Shannon Söderlund said. “A lot of people describe it as having a ‘90s vibe.” Currently residing in Astoria, Söderlund has found herself “reveling” in the local music scene.
“My primary songwriting ‘studio’ is the streets of Queens — the path between my apartment and the train, as well as the East River and walks in Astoria Park, fuel my songwriting muse regularly.” Like the upbeat, optimistic music they make, the band is hopeful for the future. “There is so much to look forward to, so much to rejoice in,” Söderlund said. Söderlund has found that current social issues have influenced their music: “This has manifested itself somewhat in my lyrics, but has also shaped my thoughts about my team, who I want to work with, and what I want to do as I manage my band.” Shannon Söderlund and their polished pop sound play regularly at The Queens Kickshaw, The Quays and a few other places around the neighborhood.

Evening Darling W
ith a lot of bands bringing shades of ‘90s emo and pop back to the forefront, Evening Darling and their straight-forward, guitar-driven sound is heavily inspired by a different decade. “Our sound is coastal folk-rock, influenced by ‘70s AM radio and our own drives up and down Interstate 95,” explained lead guitarist and sometimes singer Nick Lerangis. The band practices beneath Bakeway Bakery and The Strand Smokehouse in Astoria.
“There is an insistent, dogged and working person’s sense of forward motion in Astoria and that shapes our lyrics and our own ability to limit pretentiousness,” Lerangis said. Baffled by the current political climate, Evening Darling’s music “both empathizes with and envisions a way forward for this slice of America.” The band has big goals for 2017, like “One: to release our selftitled debut album and get it to every blog and radio station we can. We are so excited about it. It sounds great and the album art looks incredible. Two: to tour twice — once in the spring, and again in the fall/winter.” We are certain that they will accomplish both of the above and much more.

t’s not J.D. Patch’s first time at the rodeo (forgive us, we have been wanting to use that one). The Astoria-based musician who plays around town with The Hell Dwellers has concocted his own brand of “outlaw” country music that is gaining popularity in an unlikely home. “This is a melting pot, and I get people coming up to me from Texas, Georgia, South Carolina. I mean, NYC is the epicenter of everywhere. People escape their small town and come to NYC. I’ll get someone who is like, ‘Thank you so much for jamming some country music; it reminds me of back home.’” Patch has called Astoria home since 2006. “I think being in Astoria and NYC gives certain energy to the music,” Patch said. “New York in general has a lot of energy. I think being in a city subconsciously gives you that outlet of go, go, go, go.” About his traditionalist country style, Patch explained, “This whole new wave of outlaw country is about going against the system about writing what you feel and being who you are. Jonnie Paycheck. All those guys!” Referencing the infamous “Take this Job and Shove It” songwriter certainly paints a picture of a guy who doesn’t take much from anyone. “I am paving my own way kind of thing,” Patch said. “Writing my own songs. Writing what I feel. Let it be what it is. You like it or you don’t. To each their own.” J.D. Patch released his fifth record in 2016 called “Reckless on Excess.” You can catch him and The Hell Dwellers doing their thing around the neighborhood.

DON’T WORK FROM HOME Co-working spaces to make 2017 your most productive year yet By Estelle Pyper @estie_pyper
T
he new year is here, people! Time to ring in 2017 with resolutions to make this your best year yet. Hoping to be more productive this year? Looking to find more time to finish creative projects or collaborate with friends outside of the office? Do you work from home but want an office-like community? Then look no further: we’ve complied a list of great co-working spaces in your own neighborhood to help make 2017 your most productive year to date. “Not to be overshadowed by Manhattan, Queens is a center of innovation,” said Sharon Bajwa, the area manager of Spaces in Long Island City. Co-working spaces are gaining more and more attention internationally as people are constantly looking for new environments where they can work and collaborate outside of their home, especially in urban areas. “There has been a macro shift toward a new way of work,” explained a spokesperson from WeWork in Astoria. “More people
38
@estiepyper want to work on the projects they’re passionate about in an energetic environment where others are also working hard to bring their ideas to life.” These spaces provide great resources for entrepreneurs, artists and freelance writers to experience an office-like environment. Most provide meeting rooms and event spaces available to rent out, as well as a common area replete with essentials to keep you going – like coffee! Who knows; the people you meet here may quickly become your own “co-workers” and future collaborators. “Joining a co-working space is about investing in yourself while working alongside a diverse community of creatives, professionals, students and everyone in between,” said Argentina Flores, founder of QNS Collective in western Queens. For affordable memberships – usually at a monthly rate – you, too, can experience the energetic environment of co-working spaces to make your ideas come to life this year.
JANUARY 2017
QNS Collective If you’re looking for an open space to collaborate in a productive environment, QNS Collective is the place for you. Operating since 2013, they are our veteran coworking unit – the first to start a co-working environment in Queens. Flores started QNS Collective after experiencing first-hand the loneliness of freelancing and struggling to find decent places to meet clients. QNS Collective offers a large, open workspace built around the principle of strong collaboration. Their space is modern in style and comfortable, including communal long tables, desks, as well as private “suites,” dedicated to suiting each guest’s needs. You can also book
spaces for company events, as well as attend one of their many workshops offered. Members enjoy perks such as printing, conference room access, storage, mail services, private desks and more. There are a variety of affordable package options to best suit your personal needs: “Hot Desk” for $195/month, “Co-Working” for $285/ month, “Desk” for $355/month or “Office” for $550/month. A list of specific amenities offered for each option can be found on their website (http://www.qnscollective. com/membership/). Location: 36-27 36th St., Astoria Hours: Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Contact: 718-280-5122, hello@qnscollective.com Website: www.qnscollective.com

ARTS+ENTERTAINMENT
WeWork WeWork’s mission is to “create a world where people work to make a life, not just a living.” A renowned company with locations spanning the globe, WeWork in Queens lives right above Studio Square. Their contemporary, light space fosters creativity and a sense of community, complete with bright artwork on the walls. WeWork is continually filled with creative types, willing to collaborate and bounce ideas off one another. The workspaces offered span from communal rooms (there’s even an outdoor terrace for those warmer months), to focusoriented private offices. Members of WeWork enjoy fast internet access, printing and conference rooms, as well as a café where they can refuel. Staff members are on site to troubleshoot should you need it, and bonus: the space is dog friendly! There is a wide variety of member options, such as a hot desk for $300/month, a shared office desk for $530/month, and
private offices for one person for $650/ month, all the way up to eight people for $3700-$3850/month (for more than eight, you have to call for a price).
Location: 3537 36th St., Astoria Contact: 877-796-2434 Hours: Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Website: www.wework.com
The Oracle Club Are you more artistically inclined? Are you a writer looking for a creatively stimulating space? Then The Oracle Club was made for you. Tailored for artists and writers, the club offers multiple spaces for different purposes. There is an ornate library with a vintage feel for working, with a long table in the center and individual desk spaces. The exposed brick and stacks of books create the perfect inspirational atmosphere to kick that writer’s block to the curb. indsay Rabkin works at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in collections management. But for Rabkin, collections management is more of a way of life than just a job. Walking into her darling apartment that she shares with her fiancé, Matt Kaiser, collections abound, from doorknobs to art to vases. Kaiser shares her passion and together, they have created a charmingly idiosyncratic haven in a secondfloor Astoria home. “When we moved in together, our stuff meshed pretty well,” Kaiser said. A promising sign! Kaiser and Rabkin moved into their Astoria place together two and a half years ago after having what New Yorkers would call a “longdistance relationship,” commuting between Clinton Hill and Astoria, where Kaiser was already based. Combining possessions is always a tricky task, but Rabkin and Kaiser navigated this transition with ease — though they did admit that they have had to scale back their wedding registry as they can’t fit much more into their space! “One of our favorite things to do is go to the biannual rummage sale in New Jersey called the VNA,” Rabkin told me. “We bring back what we find on the train and almost die in the process!” Rabkin and Kaiser find their treasures all over, from Astoria to New Jersey and even Rabkin’s grandmother’s house in Florida. “We get a lot of really weird and cool stuff from Astoria Furniture Market,” Rabkin said, pointing out a chess set she had gotten there as a surprise birthday gift for Kaiser.

In the living room is a yellow chest used for storage that Rabkin got from Junk, an antique store in Williamsburg. “We put it on the bus, sat on it for the ride home,” Rabkin told me, laughing. “I put the doorknobs on,” she said of the cute handles that look like old-timey clock faces. “I have a collection of them for when we move.”
“The dining table is from the same place,” Rabkin told me. “It had an awful vinyl covering on it, but Matt took it off and started sanding it and there was this beautiful finish under it.” “Which we then destroyed by putting drinks on it,” Kaiser added.

“I get stuff stuck in my head and I feel the need to put it down on paper sometimes,” Kaiser mused. In the bedroom hangs a portrait that Kaiser painted of Rabkin. “I wasn’t too pleased with it, so I hung it upside down,” Kaiser said. “I think it looks better that way.” Food and drink is another theme that you begin to see as you enter the kitchen. Even their Christmas tree was decorated with donut and bacon ornaments!
“I don’t know if you’ve ever been there, but it’s the jankiest street,” Kaiser interjected. “You can find anything you want on it.” As well as finding art, Kaiser and Rabkin create their own art, too. Above the stairs hangs a beautiful geometric painting. When I enquired about it, Rabkin told me that Kaiser had painted it.
“You have a collection for everything!” Kaiser quipped. Art covers the walls, and I asked Rabkin and Kaiser where they managed to find such interesting frames to display their collection. “We picked up the gold frames from a thrift store on Steinway Street,” Rabkin explained.
“The kitchen has a lot of doughnuts,” Rabkin said, and that’s definitely true — a large print of colorful doughnuts is the kitchen’s artistic centerpiece. She framed takeout boxes that most people would just toss, and it works! “I actually saved the box from Voodoo Doughnut in Portland, Oregon, and framed it,” she said of a fun, pink piece in a detailed gold frame. “I also framed a pizza box from Milkflower in Astoria.” Rabkin and Kaiser seem to see the beauty in the everyday.

“I’m also really into using alcohol bottles as vases at the moment,” Rabkin said. “The one on the table is an old Petron bottle.”
“Which is great, because then we just drink more,” Kaiser added, “What? I’m just helping Lindsay decorate!” While a lot of the kitchen’s charm comes from repurposed boxes and bottles, the couple has to get one bright collection ready made: “I’m collecting Le Creuset kitchenware, but that can get expensive,” Lindsay told me. “One collection for the registry I think!”
Attention to detail is clearly something that both Rabkin and Kaiser enjoy, and I couldn’t help but notice that Rabkin was sporting a very unusual engagement ring. “We designed the ring together,” Kaiser told me. “Lindsay wanted to keep adding stones to it, but we had to cut her off eventually!” “The diamond is my Mom’s,” Rabkin added.

I asked about the proposal and Kaiser answered with, “Well, we got Indian food and we were laying in bed—” “Bloated,” Rabkin interjected. “Ha, yep, and it just seemed right,” Kaiser continued, smiling. As I was about to leave, I noticed a book on their coffee table. “Ah, the Nashville book is there because we are having a joint bachelor/bachelorette there,” Rabkin explained. “It should be a good time!” I wonder what these two will pick up from that adventure? A new collection to take them into their marriage, perhaps? The best is yet to come.

The Morning Pick-Me-Up: Acai Bowls at Fusion Juice Bar The coffee-and-bagel-to-go morning routine is almost as second nature to a New Yorker as swiping through subway turnstiles on the first try. And while we love a good everything bagel with a little schmear — and maybe some lox — it can in no way be considered part of any “healthy” New Year’s resolution. Which is why we’re currently obsessed with Fusion Juice Bar’s two locations on 31st Avenue and 36th Avenue. Stopping in for a quick cold press on the way to work in the morning is just as simple as grabbing a cup of joe on the way to the subway, and their acai bowls are a wonderful way to start a busy weekend morning. Their almond butter acai bowl, pictured here, is a protein-packed power punch that’ll recharge you after a morning on the elliptical.

elcome to 2017, dear reader! Despite 2016’s best efforts, you made it in one piece. Pat yourself on the back and have yourself a drink. Now put it down and pick up a dumbbell — January means it’s time to take those healthy resolutions seriously! We here at BORO know it’s no easy task to eat healthy in the big city, especially since some seriously unhealthy foods like bagels and burgers are part of our weekly diets. And don’t forget brunch — we’d practically have no social life without it! That’s why we’ve pulled together a few restaurants in Astoria, LIC and Sunnyside that offer healthy (or healthier) options to some of our favorite dishes. Read on for some tasty local spots with healthy alternatives to New York City staples.

Grilled Cheese: Queens Kickshaw A grilled cheese is pretty far outside the bounds of healthy eating, but there are ways to improve upon the form, and Queens Kickshaw is doing it. Dairy has long been known to put on more calories than many diners may prefer, but in recent years, bread’s culpability in spare tire syndrome has come to light. Queens Kickshaw is here to change that with their mind-blowing zucchini bread. Coming from chef Cory Estelle’s childhood kitchen, the bread goes great with cider poached apples, a house-made American beer cheese (none of that “American cheese product” stuff), and a pesto vinaigrette green salad. It’ll utterly change the way you think about grilled cheese.
Burger: Bareburger
Before you write us off for throwing a burger joint on a healthy resolutions list, remember that meat isn’t the issue when it comes to unhealthy burgers — bad meat is the issue. And Bareburger has anything but bad meat. Bareburger’s three western Queens spots on 23rd Avenue, 31st Avenue and Vernon Boulevard serve up delicious, organic, farm-to-table meat throughout the year. Grab a burger with beef, bison, elk or any of their other gluten-free meat options, or even one of their vegetarian patties like black bean or sweet potato and rice, and pair it with a sprout bun or a collard green wrap for a healthy take on your everyday burger. With the right approach, even your burger fix can be satiated while maintaining your healthy resolution.
Brunch: Wattle Seed Waffle at The Thirsty Koala You’re going to brunch one way or the other, so you might as well find the healthiest, tastiest spot in western Queens to brunch at. And for our dollar, there’s no better place than The Thirsty Koala on Ditmars and 35th Street in Astoria. Chef and co-owner Kathy Fuchs, who is gluten free, didn’t always feel safe when she went out to eat. That’s why this Australian-inspired restaurant takes their customers’ allergens very seriously. Much of the menu is gluten free, and crosscontamination is strictly supervised during their food prep. Celiacs and amateur dieticians alike may appreciate their attention to gluten, but anyone from vegans to carnivores will find something to like at this five-star restaurant. While their green bowl of quinoa, herbs, spinach, kale and a poached egg is a delight and their corn and jalapeño fritter Benedict is sure to satisfy, it’s their wattle seed waffle that’ll keep you coming back to the Koala after mornings at the gym. Full of protein and nice and crunchy, the wattle seed baked into their waffle batter is native to Australia and has kept Aboriginals wellenergized for centuries. Get it with fruit and a small scoop of ice cream to help the medicine go down.
