FEBRUARY 2015 | BOROMAG.COM | 3

Dear Western Queens, February is a month of twos. It’s inarguably two days shorter than the rest of the year. Valentine’s Day is usually presumed best enjoyed with a partner. But what about other pairs to enjoy during the second month of the year? Or what if you want to celebrate alone? This issue we visit with a pair of twins with the talent of musical comedy. We stop by Katch in Astoria to try their delectable 2-for-1 brunch specials. We take a pause for some culinary inpsirAsian at two new restaurants, one of which caters to our vegan friends and family. And we even have a guide on what to do if you are your own Valentine. It’s heart health month, and so we touch on the topics of nutrition as well as how to filter useful information—and we encourage you to visit www.mountsinai.org for info on free testing, and other healthy events this month. We have the photography of yet another talented musician-turnedvisual-artist, as well as the story of the rebirth of Rembetika—a whole Greek dance subculture. Again, I am daily reminded that there is so much to love about this breathtaking borough. As always, please share with us your own personal anecdotes, and send me any tips, comments, BRADLEY HAWKS news, or events to bhawks@boromag.com. We look forward to sharing many more stories with you editor-in-chief in the months ahead. Happy Valentine’s to everyone! Gratefully yours, Bradley Hawks

My Funny

e n i t n e Val taste of a good cup of joe. So off I'll go to the New York City Coffee & Bagel House (29-08 23rd Avenue, www.nycbch.com). The visually stunning decor combined with friendly service and free Wi-Fi makes this a go-to place for yours truly. And they leave water bowls outside for dogs.

If I want to know the time of year, I need not look any further than my hallway. My nextdoor neighbor, Barb, is sure to adorn her front door with decorations heralding whatever holiday is about to occur. Oh, how I loved her miniature Santa suits, strung all around her doorframe at Christmas. It's like I'm a kid again, waiting to see how my teacher is going to decorate the bulletin board next. These days, however, I pause before I open the door. Hearts line the walls outside my apartment. Oh yeah, it's Valentine's Day. Oh yeah—I'm single. But then I remind myself, Valentine's Day isn't just about lovers—it's about love. Why can't February 14th commemorate celebrating the awesomeness of me? I think the time has come to be my own Valentine, and find some cool things to do solo in Queens. Of course no day can begin without my daily dose of coffee. A habitual early riser, an IV straight into my vein is probably what I need to jolt me awake, but I could never dream of depriving myself of the wonderful aroma and 6 | BOROMAG.COM | FEBRUARY 2015

Sufficiently caffeinated, I’ll hit an early morning ‘Surf ’ class at Tone Pilates & Wellness Studio (36-19 Broadway, www. toneny.com). I'll be hanging five on my surfboard, with owner Jessica Hope Restrepo making sure I don't plummet off. In fact, Jessica and her partner, Alicia Lavender, take great pride in making their clients feel safe and cared for. No key tags are needed at this studio. These ladies know everyone's names, and have created a sense of community and family. Classes are purposely small—6 for Surf, 9 for Mat, and 3 for Reformer—but the prices rival area studios. And it's not just about teaching people Pilates. Jessica expresses a higher purpose for what she’s doing. "We want to be something bigger than what we are,” says Restrepo. “We want to give out something more to the universe than what we are. We want to change the world, and even by us changing one body at a time, it's what we're doing. Everyone who walks out of here not only feels good physically, but emotionally." That's what I call an allinclusive workout. Now that I’m energized, I’ll be ready to expand my mind and for me that means a book. Coming from a mom who reads three books per week on average, books matter to me—a lot. Lucky for me, the Astoria Bookshop (31-29 31st Street, www.astoriabookshop.com) is around the corner from the Pilates studio. It's a cozy space, with nifty handwritten cards attached to certain shelves which highligh featured books. Personalized service is the cornerstone of owner Alexis Beach's business, whether

that means to recommend a book, or to special order one for any of her customers. The store also hosts various events, including story time for kids, author readings, and my favorite, the Drunk Vocab Bee, co-sponsored with Astoria Coffee (30-04 30th Street, www. astoriacoffeeny.com) taking place on February 7th. At this point, I'll be in desperate need of nutrients. Juice Doctor (23-92 27th Street), celebrating its grand opening on February 7th, is owned by brothers Sal and Angelo Beninati—their father owns Othello Deli next door. These guys truly walk the walk and talk the talk. Both are avid juicers and health advocates. Sal graduated with a Culinary degree from Johnson and Wales in 2011, and his knowledge of juicing is impressive. Their menu is based on the human anatomy, with a chart on the wall illustrating which juice is good for which part of the body. Juices catered to your specific needs can be made, and they also have grab and go options. Delivery service is an added bonus. Everyone on staff has a background in health and nutrition and is available to provide onsite counseling to customers. Besides Juice Doctor, Sal is also the chef at Othello, overseeing their menu and doing all the cooking. As for my juice, I'll have what he's having if it means I can keep up with Sal's pace. Next, I'll head to the First Con-tact Convention, Enigma Events’ version of Comic Con (New York LaGuardia Airport Marriott, 102-05 Ditmars Boulevard, www.enigmasevents.com) to embrace my inner nerd. Geared toward independent artists, the convention will feature illustrators, colorists, and authors of comics, fantasy, and graphic novels, as well as films, panel discussions, vendors, and Cosplay awards for the best costume. Wondering if this is truly up my alley? FYI, I read Orson

Scott Card's "Ender's Game" long before it was ever a movie with Harrison Ford. Don't know the book? Check it out. It's a sci-fi classic. If I'm indulging my inner nerd, then why not also release my inner child? Bowling takes me back to my childhood, when my parents used to throw me birthday parties at the local bowling alley. Astoria Bowl (19-45 49th Street, www.astoriabowl.com) has 28 lanes split on two sides, a bar, concession stand, a movie screen, and banquet facilities upstairs. Bowling is a The Creek and the Cave yin/yang experience for me, balancing the spiritual with the physical. As I throw the ball down the lane, I can ponder the meaning of my life welcome while simultaneously addition knocking things down! to the Unfortunately for me, I 30th don't always knock things Avenue down and usually have more gutter neighborhood with balls than I do strikes. I’m unsure about all that. What trivia night is on Tuesdays. and an area with pinball machines—The Wizard of Oz is one of my faves. But the main attraction for me will be the theater where Peggy O'Leary's "Hard Lonely & Vicious" comedy show is set for 8:00 p.m., followed by a dance party in the lounge at 10:00 p.m. Valentine's Day marks the two year anniversary of "Hard Lonely & Vicious," with all proceeds benefiting Lady Parts Justice, an organization dedicated to using humor to promote women's reproductive rights, as well as combating the policies and politicians trying to prevent them. The show will begin with Peggy and co-host Molly Austin playing a drinking game show with the comedians who will be performing that night. Ticket prices are $20 for the show, or $35 with a three hour open bar from 7:00 10:00 p.m. included—one guess which option I'll be taking. After the show, I'll burn off all my drinks by shaking my groove thing on the dance floor. Sound like an exhausting day? Sometimes those are the best ones to have, where you get into bed at the end of it knowing you were actively a part of the world and the people in it. Don't get me wrong—as an independent person, I am just as happy to spend the day on my couch, reading a great book or watching back to back episodes of "Breaking Bad" or "House of Cards" on Netflix. However, if I’m truly going to celebrate myself on Valentine's Day, then I need to do it out loud and in public, where I can look around and say to myself, "I belong... I rock!" So whatever you're doing this Valentine's Day, be it solo or with a significant other or a good pal, don't forget to take a moment to recognize your own awesomeness and the unique qualities that make you, well, YOU. As for me, you know what I'll be doing—so if you see me around, make sure you say hi.

Born in the historic city of Mostar, in Bosnia-Herzegovina and former Yugoslavia, Miki Bodlovic discovered his love for art at a very early age. Up until the civil war in the early 90s, Mostar was brimming with artistic talent, and it was here that Miki thrived in music. He was developing his extraordinary talent as a bass player and songwriter when the civil war started.

ARTS (continued from page 19) With Mostar under siege, destiny propelled Miki outside of Yugoslavia’s borders, to Germany. Here Miki met and started working with Yugoslavian pop star, Hari Varesanovic, composing award-winning hits and playing bass in his band, Hari Mata Hari—one of Yugoslavia’s most popular bands. While with Hari Mata Hari, Miki toured all over Europe and North America, toting his bass guitar and his camera, collecting memories along the way. On the band’s North American tour—a little over a decade ago— Miki landed in New York, and decided to stay. Here, in Astoria, he met fellow exYugoslavian, Gigi Dzidzovic, who immediately hired him as a weekly live performer in his newly-opened Candlelight Café—now Diwine bar—on 31st Avenue. Over the next several years, Gigi and Miki built the most popular ex-Yugoslavian social bar in New York City and Tri-state area. Over time, however, Miki’s focus shifted from music to photography, and he immersed himself into the world of aperture and shutter speed. He stayed committed to developing his talent in digital photography, as well as his post-production skills. Currently, Miki is a general manager at the popular Gigi Salon & Styling Studio on Astoria’s 30th Avenue, and an emerging professional photographer for portrait, family, and landscape photography in the New York Tri-state area. His work can be see on the web at mikibodlovicphotography.squarespace. 20 | BOROMAG.COM | FEBRUARY 2015

FOOD & DRINK

Stuck on

Stix

Just over a month ago, the team behind Stix bravely opened its third location in the space formerly occupied by La Bottega, and prior to that, Mix Cafe + Lounge. This time around, the look is completely new. Call it contemporary Aegean. Comfort Greek. Mediterranean Meze. The interior, designed by A2 Interiors Studio (www.a2nyc.com), is clean, fresh, and white–with mirrors adding the illusion of vast space, and navy webs of woven ropes like nautical sprigs of seaweed dropped from the ceiling. Photographs of Astoria taken by a restaurant manager are displayed on the walls. The concept is simple. Nearly everything comes skewered with a wooden stick. Shisito peppers. Lamb. Mac & Cheese balls. Quinoa Balls. Tuna. Meatballs. Shrimp. Baby Potatoes. Think mediterranean dishes–gorgeously executed–and prepared for sharing. We were lucky enough to stop in and sample a wide portion of the menu. We also spoke for awhile with the owner and creator, Stathis Antonakopoulos. “I grew up inside the kitchen of a hotel in Greece,” explains Antonakopoulos, “and I love to cook, create, and eat.” Prior to opening Stix, he served as director of operations for the Kellari Hospitality Group in Manhattan for seven years. And that’s when everything changed over a burger and milkshake at Shake Shack. Admittedly a fan of Danny Meyer, Antonakopoulos explains, “he took the oldest concept—a burger and a shake—and gave it good quality and good branding. And he created an empire. So I thought, I’m Greek and Mediterranean. How can I do something similar. That’s when I realized no one has taken food on sticks, and make it gourmet at a low cost.”

22 | BOROMAG.COM | FEBRUARY 2015

The first skewer-centric restaurant opened its doors just two years on 23rd Street. “We opened one more restaurant in Chelsea, and this is our third restaurant,” smiles Antonakopoulos, who has now been in the U.S. for sixteen years. “I came for my bachelors and masters, and now I have lived in Astoria eleven years, so this is my home. My first job in the United States was at Christos Steakhouse, and so Astoria is a part of who I am.” Enjoy these images of their decadent lobster bacon mac & cheese, fluffy pillows of homemade pita, and assorted skewers of sausage, braised meatballs, peppers, octopus, and fried quinoa balls served with jalapeño hummus. Then get yourself to Stix. It isn’t just good—it’s awesome. And much more than just another souvlaki stand. Dine-in for the full experience, or you can order directly from their website. They are open all day, every day, and even offer a special brunch menu on the weekends, which includes pancake lollipops and lobster omelettes. And yes, they have a full bar, as well as a cautiously edited wine list so you can choose from specialty cocktails and European wines. Their sidewalk permit is in the works for the summertime, too. Save room for a little nest of Paradise—a crisp, shredded angel hair kataifi sandwich filled with hazelnuts, chantilly cream, and rose water honey. It’s a dessert you will not soon forget. Stix is located at the corner of 30th Ave and 41st St just east of Steinway. 40-17 30th Ave,

s

Since the day it opened in May of 2013, Katch has continually caught our eye. Sure, they boast two full pages of the menu “for both beer hounds and beer geeks alike, with selections from Guinness, Samuel Adams, & Blue Moon, as well as Lagunitas, Victory, Dogfish Head, Astoria’s own SingleCut Brewsmiths, even Wells & Young from England & the über-niche Gulden Draak from Belgium.” They even feature an impressive sixty flatscreen televisions. But what really caught our attention was the killer brunch special they are running for the month of February. If you boost your brunch to bottomless for $15, not only can you enjoy bottomless glasses of mimosas, bellinis, bloody marys, prosecco, and PBR for two hours, but you can also enjoy 2-for-1 entrees—which are just $12 a piece. And it’s offered every weekend in February from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dine in the front area at an intimate table, or in the mingling music of the middle bar. Or step into the backyard beer garden to a communal picnic table, covered during the winter by a tent. There is literally a space for everyone. The menu features whimsical takes on brunch classics, and this is the place to be brave. Even if you take a risk, we are willing to bet that you can’t really lose with this brunch. Chicken and waffles showcase fluffy red velvet waffles loaded with juicy fried chicken and crisp, creamy coleslaw paired with a heaping dome of tater fries and smoked apple aioli. Real knockouts are the smoked beef tenderloin sliders which come three to an order, blanketed with aged cheddar and sunny side up quail eggs, perched on a nest of baby spinach and garlic horseradish aioli atop miniature pretzel buns. Another favorite is the Hangover Helper—a generous dish of three broken eggs, tossed with hand cut fries, smoked bacon, and creamy havarti cheese, all speckled with green English peas. Blueberry crunch pancakes are topped with homemade granola and honey yogurt. Nutella strawberry French toast is available, as well as a Guinness cream sauce-topped benedict and huevos rancheros. Dinner looks equally promising. According to the menu, they’ve “pushed the limits of what a local bar can serve, including bunches of Buffalo Wings, but also duck poutine, for starters. They have a unique Krispy Kale & Garlic Shrimp, along with German Pretzels, Mini Brats in a Blanket, & an extra-large portion of Tater Tots. The ridiculous 4-6 Pastrami Sandwich’s meat is brined for 4 days, then smoked for 6 hours & topped with Gruyere cheese & beer mustard.” We were thrilled we stopped by for our favorite meal of the week. You will definitely Katch us there again soon. Katch is located at 31-19 Newtown Avenue in Astoria. Open from 3 p.m. weekdays and 11:30 a.m. weekends. www.katchastoria.com (718) 777-2230 FEBRUARY 2015 | BOROMAG.COM | 33

NIGHTLIFE & ENTERTAINMENT

Billiards —over—

It’s hard to believe, but Break Bar & Billiards will have been open for eleven years this August. The expansive billiards hall, restaurant, game room, and lounge has been entertaining the neighborhood from one story above street level for over a decade. Brick maintains a 55 foot long bar, 10 HD television displays, and 7,000 square feet of exposed brick beneath 12 foot ceilings—all of which form an adult playground of 14 billiards tables, 2 ping pong tables, darts, air hockey, hoops, and foosball. One of the biggest changes guests have seen over the years is the shifting of their overall concept of the space. Originally, it was simply a strong billiards-focused environment. Now, guests are finding an place where people can come in and just have a good time—an all-around great hangout. They have happy hour 7 days a week from opening to 8 pm—with opening at 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and Noon Friday through Sunday. Themed nights are Stump Trivia on Tuesday and Wednesday game night. Break boasts 2 pool leagues that guests can join. As Break is simply the host, more information on the leagues can be found on their respective websites: APA league http://brooklynqueens.apaleagues.com/ MAPL league http://www.playmapl.com/ “What I think makes the place special,” explains manager Mike Cerritos, “is the fact that we’ve been in Astoria for quite awhile now. We’ve seen the changes and the fads. Nowadays, you have a restaurant or bar opening up every week here in Astoria that has something to prove. Everybody seems to be going through that whole organic everything, handmade, everything rustic, hipstery phase. A lot of businesses around here seem to run on the ‘If you don’t like it, go somewhere else’ mentality. We’ve adapted many of these things that people in Astoria like, but we still don’t really have a type of vibe or style that you can categorize us under.” “It’s difficult to prove yourself to potential customers in Astoria,” Cerritos continues, “because there are so many creative, talented, young, and artistic business owners—and there are just so many places to grab a drink or a bite. But we’ve been here through all of that, and we’d like to think that we’re here to stay.” With a full food menu and bar, Break is an ideal gathering place for large groups. For large group info you can contact Mike, at info@break-ny.com 34 | BOROMAG.COM | FEBRUARY 2015

How would you best describe the vibe at Break in three words? “Dynamic, unpretentious, and entertaining,” laughs Cerritos. “Just come check us out!” Break Bar & Billiards 3204b Broadway, Astoria, NY 11106 www.break-ny.com

A timeless song of Sex, Drugs, & SoUL Story + Image By

Rembetika is the music of the Greek underground. Originating in the hashish dens of Pireaus and Thessaloniki during the 1920s, the music was an urban blues of the subculture. Greek refugees who had lived comfortably in Turkey were forced to leave with whatever they could carry—exiled to live in the mountains. Rembetika was the music of these ‘outcasts’. The lyrics spoke of poverty, pain, drug addiction, police oppression, prison, unrequited love, and hashish. These songs would be written from the 1920s until the 1960s. Mars—the Astoria bar owned by Evan Roumeliotis and George Samios—is now hosting a weekly event that is contributing to the revival of authentic Rembetika music. “Costa was putting together a band specifically to perform Rembetika,” commented Roumeliotis, “and he was asking if I knew any venues that would be interested— and I told him that I was.”

Lizabeth Nieves

We are trying to bring out some of the hidden treasures in that style of music that are not the most popular. I have been working on this for years, trying to find the right people to cover this music. It’s the right people and the right setting, and it has all come together.” Of his own experience as a Rembetika musician, Costas Baltazanis says, “I always loved this kind of music. I was playing it when I was a student in Boston. We had a very successful band there, and I was always looking forward to doing this again. It’s a very specific era of music. Not many people know a lot about this. Besides being a very enjoyable thing, it’s a very cultural thing. There is so much to learn about this music and how these guys were living back then in the 1920s and 30s through the 60s.” “This music is not to be played on big stages or in a huge theater,” Baltazanis added. “Intimate is the best venue for it.”

“Traditionally, the music is accompanied by food, and so we decided to do it at Mars,” added Samios. “We are mixing up our menu for the night with Greek small plates, and there is Greek wine, ouzo, and Greek drinks.”

Reservations are highly recommended for this cultural excursion, which is open to anyone. “We are exposing the genre beyond the Greek realm,” says Roumeliotis. “In other venues, it’s not accessible to non–Greeks, but our doors are open to everybody.”

Every Wednesday at 8:30 p.m., the music of Christos Papadopoulos, Rena Tsapelas, and Costas Baltazanis can be heard. “There are undiscovered gems, which is another thing we are trying to do,” explains Papadopoulos, “to play the music that is not typically played.

BODY & SOUL

the Correct Information Story by

Hayley Bridgewater

I don’t know if this experience is universal, but in my circles it seems like inevitably a majority of conversations end up on the topic of food. More specifically, these are discussions about particular diet patterns, opinions, and beliefs. Friends, family, coworkers, even the local barista, almost everywhere I go someone will ask me about what I eat, how often, and why. And in turn, everyone has an opinion. “Should I eat several small meals or a few larger ones? No food after 8 p.m.? What do I think about Paleo? Have I tried a juice cleanse? Will I lose weight if I don’t eat any carbs? Meat? Dairy? Sugar?” The interesting thing about all of the diet talk we hear—and take part in—is that it rarely centers on nutrition. Seriously, when was the last time you heard someone concerned about protein, calcium, or iron needs? Do you think the average person really has an idea if they are getting enough B vitamins? Or in this city of fluorescent-lit cubicles, how many of us are aware if we are vitamin D deficient? In this day of fast technology and media, there is quite a bit of information out there, but people still remain pretty uninformed about nutrition. Perhaps they don’t know where to look, what to trust, or simply don’t have the time to wade through it all. Let’s say that we are able to locate reputable information—it still remains difficult to know what applies to each of us. For just as we as people are not all the same, our diet and nutrition needs are not all the same. People vary greatly in build, activity level, environment, genetics, and health concerns. It would be an amazing feat if someone were to come up with a ‘one size fits all’ diet plan. But that is not going to happen. So we might as well take it down to basics, start at the beginning; simplify what we understand about nutrition. Truth be told, there are some really great books and studies out there, but for those of you who don’t always have time to find a book and finish it—believe me, I’ve been there—I thought it might be a great idea to do some research and share with you some quality information in easy to digest—pardon the pun—format. Being that he teaches college nutrition classes, of course, I am going to ask my trainer for a podcast recommendation. He quickly threw out the name Dr. John Berardi, and I was on my way, ear buds in hand. Being the owner of Precision Nutrition, the world’s largest online nutrition education company, means you probably know your stuff—and after listening to hours of his talks and interviews, I can assure you that he is a smart dude with an impressive resume. But I think the true brilliance is in what does comes down to how the information is organized and presented.

42 | BOROMAG.COM | FEBRUARY 2015

We all know that it is very difficult to make changes in our lives, especially when we’ve just managed to figure out a way to cram everything into the day. The idea of overhauling the way we eat seems like a quick way to throw a wrench into the gears. Dr. Berardi believes in breaking everything down to the simplest of steps, and very literally tackling one thing at a time. Building piece by piece until you’ve created this complete nutrition-minded lifestyle instead of just some diet plan you tried to put into place but wouldn’t stick. It is solid teaching, simply put, that incorporates human behavior patterns to aid in success. I have got to say, pretty much a thumbs up. He is a regular guest on popular nutrition podcasts: www.thefitcast.com www.fatburningman.com www.garagewarrior.com www.supernutritionacademy.com Vlog interviews and podcasts with Dr. John Berardi can be found en mass on www.youtube.com/user/PrecisionNutrition I am very aware that being able to live a vegan lifestyle is important in many communities including my own, so I didn’t want to leave those folks out. I will admit, I am not a vegan, and I am not at all educated in the specifics of the vegan lifestyle. I do however, have a handful of very close friends that not only live a strict vegan lifestyle, but are hardcore endurance athletes. They are continually concerned with getting the correct fuel and healthy nutrients needed to stay at peak performance. When I inquired about a podcast resource, all pointed me to No Meat Athlete Radio. After listening to a handful of episodes, I understand the appeal and can appreciate the way that it is presented, and even though I am not within the demographic, I am sure to give it a listen from time to time. If you are a plant-loving distance runner, triathlete, or endurance junkie, this might just be the podcast for you. No Meat Athlete Radio www.nomeatathlete.com/radio-archive/ Much of this information pretty much aligns with what I know to be true for me, and mirrors habits that I try to put into place every day. I am lucky to have grown up in a fairly athletic family with the mindset that food is fuel and you eat to perform. That isn’t to say that we all shouldn’t relax sometimes—we definitely should—but let’s face it, if you eat terrible, you feel terrible. I know that many of us have made some lofty goals for 2015, and if getting a better grasp on nutrition is one of them, I hope this helps.

t r a e H

A Matter of the

Story By

February is here. The stores are adorned with pinks and reds, sparkled garland, and cupid cutouts. We are beseeched with ads for flowers, candy, and jewelry, and naturally our minds are drifting to loved ones. Though I can appreciate the sentiments brought about by St. Valentine’s Day, I would like to focus on a different matter of the heart. In fact, a very literal one.

Hayley Bridgewater

saturated and trans fats, cholesterol, processed sugars and chemicals. Drink a lot of fresh water.

Keep Active—Hand in hand with a proper diet, physical activity can positively impact your cholesterol levels, lower your blood pressure, and help you maintain a healthy weight. In addition to helping condition your cardiovascular system, daily activity can give you extra energy, reduce stress and anxiety, and regulate sleeping patterns. If the prospect seems overwhelming, start small. 30 minute daily walks are a great place to start. Recruit your friends and family or beloved pet.

February is National Heart Health Awareness Month. It is an opportunity for you and those you love to get educated, screened, and assess individual risks for cardiovascular disease. While I certainly don’t intend to put a damper on things, the fact remains that cardiovascular disease— which includes heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke—is the number one killer of Americans—both male and female. And heath care costs associated with cardiovascular disease are among the highest conditions on record. To drive a staggering point home, heart related illness kills more people each year than cancer, respiratory disease, and accidents combined. And while we like to think that we are exempt from this worry because of age or fitness level, a great many of us have seen friends and family, young and old, fit and otherwise struck with previously undetected cardiovascular issues. I am not trying to scare anyone. Believe me, this is the tip of the iceberg where these statistics are concerned. I am merely suggesting that what we don’t know actually can hurt us, and that screening and preventative measures are a huge step in cutting individual risk. If there are numerous steps that we can be personally accountable for, why not take ownership of that responsibility?

Prevention/Screening is key. Regardless of familial predisposition, there are several factors that complicate and stress our cardiovascular system. By eliminating detrimental behaviors and incorporating healthy habits, we can cut risk dramatically.

Smoking—By all means, quit smoking. It is one of the top risk factors impacting heart disease and incidence of stroke. The high taxes, depressing commercials, and chronic cough are a sign. 2015 is your year to take back control of your lungs. Eat Healthy—Diet impacts blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels, which in turn, affect cardiovascular health. Choose wisely. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and fiber rich grains. Make choices low in

44 | BOROMAG.COM | FEBRUARY 2015

Curb Alcohol Use—I am surely not trying to squash your fun or suggest completely abstaining from your favorite drink. Increased alcohol consumption can negatively impact your blood pressure, and keeping an eye on your intake will help manage your levels in the long term.

Know Your Numbers—It is a great idea for everyone, regardless of age or health, to have their blood pressure checked from time to time. This is the easy one. You can have this done at a clinic, medical office, even the drug store. Knowing what is baseline normal for you can alert you to any possible issues. Cholesterol levels can be checked with a simple blood test and should be done at least every 5 years. Your blood sugar numbers can be monitored in the same way. This can be crucial to your heart health if you have a family history of diabetes. Keeping an eye on these numbers, in addition to knowing your healthy weight range, can put your ahead in the prevention game.

It is the hope that with education and awareness, we as a country can reverse the skyrocketing numbers of deaths due to cardiovascular disease. The American Heart Association, in conjunction with numerous hospitals, medical facilities, and outreach organizations, does an incredible job of making screenings, workshops, and information accessible each February in our community. Talking with Rebekah Nelson

46 | BOROMAG.COM | FEBRUARY 2015

Living with the Dead is a feature film about love, loss, adventure, and hope. Written and directed by Queens native, Christine Vartoughian, LWTD was executive produced by Astorian, Rebekah Nelson. Parts of the film were shot throughout Queens, and feature local bands Sidesaddle, The Gantry, and Vespertina. BORO sat with Rebekah Nelson to talk about the upcoming feature. Interview + Images By

Lizabeth Nieves

BORO: How did you get involved with the film? Rebekah Nelson: I got involved with the film because the writer and director is a good friend of mine. We grew up together in Forest Hills, and we have known each other since we were fourteen. I was involved pretty early on—she had the script, and from that point we started preproduction together. It’s been two years in the making. BORO: Tell us a little bit about your background as a producer… RN: I have produced other things. I’ve produced mainly multi-media events with Alternative Arts Association. I learned a lot with this experience. It was nice to have this experience from the other side of the table because my background is mostly as an actor. I went to school for theater. This is my first time behind the camera, and I love it. It’s hard work, but it’s great. BORO: What is the film about? RN: It’s about a young woman who runs away from home after her boyfriend kills himself. He leaves behind a suitcase full of books that she becomes consumed with. She ends up meeting another runaway boy, and they wind up having adventures in the forest. It’s a film about loss. It’s a film about hope, love, imagination, books, and Polaroids. BORO: What makes Living with the Dead worth seeing? RN: The film is different. There aren’t many female-centric films out there. It is a female director, writer, and executive producer. It’s a very female-centric film. It tackles the issue of suicide and depression, and it’s a conversation that everyone needs to have—and something that needs to be acknowledged. At the end of the day, it’s a hopeful film—the message is that there is hope, even if you are struggling with mental illness. BORO: What is your next project? RN: I would love to do another movie next. I have something in mind already with a couple of other Astoria filmmakers, but it’s very early on.

The Don of a new day

It feels like the tiny entrance to a tiny home. Tiny plants and miniature statues crowd the front window. Paper ornaments hang from one wall, with a chalkboard displayed on the other. There are only four stools, and one of them is pulled in front of the counter to hold a stack of menus—menus that have been modified, with several items covered in thin strips of paper to conceal menu items that have been abandoned or reworked. “It’s a work in progress,” smiles the chef from around the corner. This peculiar little space is the home of Don Korean Cuisine, and it’s one of several new Korean kitchens appearing on the scene in Western Queens. The place may be small, and the consulting chef may be perpetually tweaking the menu, but in the month since

they have opened that have drawn quite a crowd—especially in deliveries. On one visit, I started with Ddeokbokki— Korean rice cakes that look and taste like wonderfully chubby pieces of spaghetti the length and width of a baby carrot. These chewy little cylinders come swimming in a spicy hot pepper sauce. Though I avoid the actual glistening, fiery peppers, the heat is intense, yet wonderfully enjoyable. Mixed with crumbles of pork sausage and thin shavings of roasted garlic, it reminds me of a spicy take on a Bolognese with astonishingly portly noodles. I devour the entire bowl, and extinguish the fire on my tongue with a $1.50 box of banana milk. “I am from Korea, and the bibimbap here is fantastic,” boasts the cashier on my next visit, “but you should try the bibim burger, I think.” I take her advice, and am giddy over the rustic garlic baguette stacked with a beef patty, thin ribbons of carrots and cucumber, those same garlic crisps, bean sprouts, and gorgeous fried egg—all of which are zigzagged with a blend of hot sauce and something much like a homemade ranch. Kimchi arrives in spicy variations of cabbage, cucumber, and even mango. I order the classic version on a pile of French fries, and the result is addictive.

Kimbap arrives like Korean sushi, and the rice is exceptional. Sweet grains are wrapped around swirls of pickled daikon, burdock, cucumber, carrots, jalapeno, and cream cheese. Korean tacos are filled with honey-marinated chicken, and shredded pork is hand-pulled over rice. Glistening whole chicken wings are dressed in lemongrass or roasted garlic honey sauce. Rice is piled with BBQ pork ribs or grilled, sliced ribeye. And you simply can’t miss the brisket soup with broth rendered from beef bones, swirling around tiny rice noodles, cilantro, scallion, and sprouts. It is an admittedly teeny, tiny space. You might pass if you blink. But then again, sometimes the best things come in small packages. Don Korean 42-06 30th Ave Astoria, NY 11103 (718) 777-8838

FOOD & DRINK

Inspir-Asian from Veget-Asian It is unfortunate that carnivores and omnivores so often find aversion to labels like vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free. The last time you had spaghetti marinara, did you think of it as a vegetarian dish? Or minestrone soup, a beet salad with shaved almonds, or an avocado sushi roll? The fact of the matter is that while such labels express their inclusion of a demographic of eaters with specific needs, those labels are not intended to exclude those with a larger range of dietary possibilities. I would promote the newly opened Jujube Tree as one example of such a place where all diners should try at least one meal. The neon green bubble letters above the door are followed by giant alabaster letters proclaiming they serve Vegan Asian Cuisine. But for those carnivores thinking that title translates into something somewhat exclusive, you might really be missing out. Begin with a refreshing homemade drink like a lemonade with passion fruit or mint, thai iced tea, mango lassi, or a virgin mojito. Then start with a small plate or salad. Crispy wonton purses are stuffed with soy cheese and spinach, deep-fried, and served with a tangy mango sauce for dipping. Glistening dumplings are filled with gems from the garden, and served steamed or fried. Vietnamese summer rolls are stuffed with basil and fresh veggies and served with mooshoo sauce for dipping. A watercress salad is jeweled with garnet beets, jade avocado, pearl alfalfas sprouts, and topped with a golden sesame-peanut dressing. Green and black seaweed arrives marinated and shredded. And exotic salad toppings are the stars, like mango, hijiki, and pignoli. Pumpkin is available steamed by the slice, or pureed into a soup studded with white beans, onions, celery, and cilantro.

50 | BOROMAG.COM | FEBRUARY 2015

Entrees feature several noodle and rice bowl variations, including pad thai, a curry-kissed Singapore mei fun, even udon, soba, and green tea noodles served with a dipping sauce. But the real pleasures come from exploring the inventive mains. Soy protein is breaded and served in a General Tso presentation over steamed florets of broccoli, and the result is remarkably similar to fried chicken. There are curried stews and teriyakis—even colorful lettuce wraps. They even serve a handful of vegan desserts, though those dishes are not prepared in-house. Currently, Jujube Tree is open daily for lunch and dinner. And just remember—vegan cuisine isn’t only for vegans. It can be healthy, delicious food for everyone. 35-02 30th Avenue, Astoria, NY 11103 (718) 545-1888

Story by

Thomas Caramanno

In entertainment, good things come in pairs. Abbot and Costello, Sonny and Cher, Rogen and Franco. Unbeknownst to many, Astoria is home to its own show biz duo— The Rescignos. Paul and Robbie Rescigno are twin brothers who write and star in their eponymous show, The Rescignos. What the Olsen twins are to made-forDVD flicks and bad fashion, the Rescignos are to musical theater and comedy. Replete with original songs, skits, witty selfdeprecating humor, and a vast collection of sweater vests, The Rescignos pay homage to television’s classic sitcoms and variety hours. According to their web site (TheRescignos. com), the show “hearkens back to oldschool vaudeville with contemporary material and brand-spanking new music.” Yet long before their foray onto the stage, Paul and Robbie were just kids imbued with passion, determination, and ample viewings of Nick-at-Nite reruns. Paul and Robbie were born in Brooklyn, but raised in Delaware. From their youth, the boys were enamored with entertainment and performing. “We grew up watching a lot of old television shows—Dick Van Dkyke,

52 | BOROMAG.COM | FEBRUARY 2015

Mary Tyler Moore, The Muppets— and a lot of our comedy is influenced in that way,” says Robbie. After participating in high school theater, the Rescignos attended Syracuse University and earned BFAs in theater. Paul and Robbie first crafted their show twelve years ago when they were still college freshman, and eventually performed it as seniors. Knowing they were moving to New York to pursue acting careers, the boys wanted a go-to gig they could perform as a duo. “We wanted to build something we could take to New York in addition to our acting, so we created a basic premise for a show,” Paul explains. Following graduation, the Rescignos moved to New York City and settled in Astoria.

In the midst of working and auditioning individually, opportunity knocked when a former Syracuse classmate named Cait Doyle asked the brothers to open for her show, Hot Mess in Manhattan, at The Duplex Piano Bar in NYC. After performing three songs, the Rescignos impressed management and were invited back as headlining acts. Since then, Paul and Robbie have played thirty shows at The Duplex and regularly perform around Christmas time and on their birthday—

which, with a wink and nudge, they refer to as their ‘anniversary special’. The Rescignos is a truly postmodern experience—a show within a show finding Paul and Robbie playing hyperbolic versions of themselves. “The characters of Paul and Robbie are an exaggeration of who we are in real life,” says Paul. The fictitious brothers host a variety hour, where songs are punch lines to jokes established by dialogue. Their song lyrics and music are penned by longtime friend Mike Hadge, but Paul writes the duo’s parody numbers. They also cast friends in the ensemble, and the group has performed together from the very

beginning, further creating the nostalgic, familiar feel of a television variety program. While The Rescignos derive their structure from TV classics—think campy opening credits, voiceover narration, commercial interludes, and sitcom-esque joke setups—the boys infuse the show with modern songs and content. Paul feels this method successfully hooks audiences. “The structure is very oldschool [but] the material is contemporary because you see [it] and something is familiar.” Each performance is filmed, and clips are uploaded to the Rescignos’ YouTube channel, but the boys are mindful of what they post. “We never want to put anything on the Internet if it’s not great,” said Robbie. Even with the allure of viral video, Paul and Robbie’s theater roots give way to their

preference for the intimacy and connection of a live audience. “We are open to our videos going viral,” joked Robbie, “but we can’t favor that versus people seeing us in person.” The Rescignos recently filmed and uploaded a music video onto YouTube, entitled, “I Will Never Leave You…Ever,” which is a clever spoof on the late Broadway musical, Side Show, which features a pair of conjoined twins. They are also writing material for a spring show, but in the interim, the boys are “allowing [themselves] to be surprised by life,” reports Robbie. Paul adds, “The show doesn’t necessarily have to be huge. We do this to have fun, and if the audience enjoys it, great— we’ve done our job.”
