Dear western Queens,

During the month of Cupid and his infamous little arrow, we have thousands of reasons to express love for our breathtaking neighborhood, its residents and its businesses. We check in with a local mom who has created a business to help expecting mothers on public transportation. A 30-year-old veterinary clinic shares some hilarious stories of the animals we love. A tremendously talented Broadway dancer shares his own favorites in the neighborhood. And we see how a ballerina turns her passion for wine and cheese into a beautiful new fondue spot built by her beloved husband. Whether you are cuddling with a loved one or confidently flying solo, this issue is devoted to love and the many ways we express it. As always, please share with us your own personal anecdotes, and send me any tips, comments, news or events to bhawks@boromag.com. Stay warm—and keep spreading love. Gratefully yours, Bradley Hawks

Wine a Little, L Story & Images By Bradley Hawks

“When my wife and I first started hanging out, we ate nothing but cheese for almost three months,” says Armin Mrkanovic, owner of Gizi Chocolate, Wine, & Cheese. A gifted ballerina, it seemed that his wife, Mona, had only one vice— cheese. Wine and chocolate came in at a close second place, so when the two decided to open a restaurant on Vernon Boulevard, fondue, chocolate, cheese and wine seemed the only natural theme for the duo. “We were best friends for seven years,” recalls Mrkanovic, “and one day she sat me down and told me she loved me.” The rest is history. Make no mistake—these two take ridiculous care of their bodies. He was born in Bosnia and raised in Germany, while she is Persian— and between training at the gym and her background as a dancer, the two miraculously maintain peak physical form while serving cheeseboards, charcuterie and Jacques Torres truffles (which are delivered every couple of days). Boasting a selection of nearly 40 cheeses, two decadent fondue options and a variety of plates intended for sharing, Gizi just launched a brunch menu. Waffles arrive topped with mixed berries and maple syrup. Grilled cheese is served both savory and sweet, with fillings rang6 I BOROMAG.COM | february 2016

tion this place is offering something special. But that’s what is to be expected when you build a restaurant based on love. The name is even an expression of love. “Gizi is the nickname for our teacup Chihuahua, Gizmo,” Mrkanovic says as he pulls out his phone to proudly show pictures. There is undeniably a lot of love here. Guests will fall in love with the dark, romantic, antique décor and even more so with the wine specials. Between 4 and 7 p.m., you can order a flatbread and a glass of wine for just $15, or a glass of wine for only $6. Wedding planning can be both exciting and terrifying for a brideto-be. Take from it Nicole Panetierri, the effervescent owner of The Brass Owl, who was there just one year ago. She has invited her wedding team (all Astoria-based wedding experts) to participate in a wedding information workshop at The Brass

Owl on Thursday, Feb. 18, from 8 to 10 p.m. “It’s a great chance to ask questions from people you aren’t actually paying any money to,” Panetierri says, though the experts are certainly available for hire if a bride-to-be connects with any of them. The panel of professionals will include Amanda Savory of Bespoke Moments (wedding planner), Eden DiBianco of Eden DiBianco Beauty and Alexis Buryk of City Love Photography. These ladies will help clients understand the planning process and what it entails. Unlike many wedding expos, this is a no-pressure event. It is intended for brides to get inspired to start the planning process, not to book any vendors. There will be a makeup demonstration to show some fun bridal looks. And in true Brass Owl fashion, wine and cheese will be served. If you simply need to shop for yourself or someone you love, the rest of the store is open with shoes, clothing, candles and lifestyle items. The Brass Owl 36-19 Ditmars Blvd. Astoria, NY 11105

P

erhaps you have seen tiny orange and white buttons on your daily treks on the MTA. That’s because Christine Serdjenian Yearwood saw a need to raise awareness for pregnant women who use public transit, and so the UP-STAND movement was launched. BORO recently sat down with the mother and CEO to learn a little more about how these pins really work. BORO: Can you tell us a little about the nationwide movement you launched? Christine Serdjenian Yearwood: Absolutely. After having a child in 2014, I joined a handful of mom groups across the country, including Astoria-based MOMally. As new moms, we shared all types of experiences with one another, and one recurrent theme was the expe-

A Labor of Love

rience of pregnant women out in public spaces and on transportation. I listened to these horror stories women had about health complications from standing too long or carrying something too heavy, fainting from exhaustion or motion sickness, and being shoved in line or onto crowded trains. I realized that even as someone who shared those experiences while pregnant, I still hesitate to offer someone help or my seat because I’m afraid they might not actually be pregnant and I will offend them. So, I thought, what if people clearly knew who was pregnant, or who would be willing to stand up for them? I have witnessed such a great generosity of spirit between strangers when someone is aware of another person’s need and knows how they can help. And so, the 18 I BOROMAG.COM I february 2016

UP-STAND movement was born. Our awareness items allow for women make their pregnancies clear in order to take the guesswork out of it. In addition, the movement is unique in that, unlike campaigns in other countries where only pregnant women wear awareness items, we pay equal efforts to engage supporters who want to make themselves approachable— since lots of women aren’t ready to share their pregnancies publicly, and are hesitant to advocate for themselves because they feel dejected from prior bad experiences. Or, they

simply don’t want to approach strangers who might have hidden disabilities or aren’t paying attention. By making pregnant women and their supporters clearly visible to one another, we aim to make public spaces and transportation safer for pregnant women. BORO: As pregnancy is something that isn’t always visible, what are some signs that might help people recognize an expecting mother? CSY: It’s so true. The Epoch Times recently ran an article that said that up to 90 percent of pregnant women have some degree of nausea or vomiting be-

fore they appear pregnant, and a study in the scientific journal Nature explained how a woman’s stability and posture is significantly altered in order to accommodate a growing fetus beginning early on in pregnancy. But with varying body types, bulky coats and crowded venues, I don’t think that it’s ever really possible to know who is pregnant. My hope is that UPSTAND products will help expecting mothers navigate these waters before they have to experience anything unsafe.

and personal accountability, commuting can become a less stressful experience for everyone involved. When I’m traveling and a question is asked about the pin, I take great happiness in taking a minute to pause my music and explain the premise behind it.” Catch his full interview on our website.

it’s coat season in a lot of areas across the country where public transportation is utilized, but with warmer weather on the horizon and the movement catching on in public spaces nationwide, we plan to expand our offerings. We’re considering other items like bag tags, stickers and zipper pulls, but customer feedback will of course be one of the most important determinants to our growth.

BORO: Have you sold many buttons so far? CSY: We’ve been on the market for about three months, and while we haven’t made the impact we’d like yet, BORO: The buttons are brilliant. BORO: Are there other things you do to raise awareness? CSY: We plan to host a solidarity ride to raise awareness for the UP-STAND movement in the spring, in which expecting moms, supporters and their children can come together to ride the subways as a team while wearing their UP-STAND apparel. Look for more to come on that by following us on social media. More generally, UP-STAND recently joined forces with Bergen County Doulas to collect donations for the Women’s Support Center in Yerevan, Armenia. Both of us run businesses that focus on supporting women, and we wanted to donate our time to an organization that shared that mission. Just under 700 gently used items are on their way to Armenia in the first shipment, and that’s only onethird of what we collected. BORO: How can our readers get involved? CSY: There are lots of ways to join the movement. You can find our products on our site www. up-stand.com, and on Amazon, Etsy, Pinterest and Facebook, as well as at The Brass Owl and Tiny You. Visit our website or follow our accounts on Instagram or Facebook to find out more about upcoming awareness events. fter performing at the Goodspeed and Paper Mill, and after crossing the country in the touring casts of “A Chorus Line” and “West Side Story,” Michael Scirrotto stepped in the coveted cast of the longest-running revival in Broadway history: “Chicago.” BORO caught up with the stunningly handsome and supremely talented dancer on an Astoriabound N train as Scirrotto traveled home from an evening performance of the hit show, and asked if he could sit down for a chat about the neighborhood he proudly calls home. BORO: What is your current role on Broadway? Michael Scirrotto: Currently I am in the Broadway production of “Chicago The Musical.” I play the characters of The Jury and Harry. BORO: How long have you been involved with that show? MS: I have been with “Chicago The Musical” for about two years now. It’s been a crazy ride so far. BORO: How long have you lived in Astoria? MS: I have lived in Astoria for exactly nine years now—practically a native.

BORO: Are there any favorite places to take a walk with a friend? MS: I love to walk down 23rd Avenue to Astoria Park. I especially love that walk during the spring/ summer. The neighbors take such good care of their homes and lawns. It makes me feel like I am in a real neighborhood. BORO: What is something special about Astoria you feel is different from Manhattan? MS: I like the feeling that I live in a neighborhood. I know the names of the people at the grocery store, the laundromat, and even my barber. They also know my name. Also, the feeling of being able to get out of the chaos of the concrete jungle that we call Manhattan. I feel like I can breathe when I am back in Astoria. BORO: Speaking of fresh air, do you have a favorite memory in Astoria Park? MS: This past summer, my friend and I stumbled upon what seemed like an Aztec Sun Worship ceremony. The costumes, chants and percussion were so overwhelming. It was an awesome experience to just sit and observe. I really appreciate the diversity of that park.

t’s 3 p.m. on a Friday, and there is a line from the register all the way to the front door. Cooks on the line are plating falafel, slathering smears of hummus and slicing roasted meats off the rotating spit. All the while, Fares Zeideia is singing, “I Love Rock and Roll” along with Joan Jett, who is piping out through the speakers overhead. Zeideia, better known as The King of Falafel, officially opened Fares Zeideia the first brickand-mortar space for his award-winning falafel and shawarma on Saturday, Jan. 30. Sharing the block with Parisi Bakery, the restaurant is located just around the corner from the space where loyal fans anxiously wait for plates of the delicious grilled meats from the truck that has been serving New York City for the past decade and a half. “I moved to New York City from

Palestine when I was about 15,” recalls Zeideia, who is now 50. “For a while I slept on the A train, feeding myself on 10-cent burgers from White Castle.” He then worked in a pizzeria, worked at a stationery store, and even drove a taxi for nearly 17 years. “I never thought I would see something like this space happen,” he says. The restaurant is part homage to New York City, with a pastel mural of the city as seen from the East River decorating the entryway. It is also part homage to the holy city of his birth with a giant mural of the Dome of the Rock gracing the main dining area. Colorful mosaics fill the space between, as well as seating for nearly 40 customers.

What was born as simple meats served from the original 8-foot street cart has now grown into a Vendy Award-winning empire that seems poised to become a mainstay. “People come from as far away as California and Japan,” Zeideia says. And the reason is immediately apparent as soon as you try a bite of the lamb or chicken mixed with

pickled turnips, basmati rice and garlic sauce. The new restaurant space will allow the freedom to offer more salads and refrigerated dishes, as well as experiment with daily specials. The main recipes are all adjusted from Zeideia’s mother’s own recipes. “The falafel is actually vegan, though many think it has breadcrumbs to give the outside that crunch,” he explains. “It’s all about how long you soak the chickpeas, and the temperature of the fryer.” It would appear the team has worked out any kinks long before opening the doors to the restaurant. Already, the line is out the door, just like the crowd that gathers down the street by the truck. It’s no wonder; in addition to serving award-winning food, Zeideia greets his customers with an enormous smile of recognition and gratitude. 30-15 Broadway, Astoria 917-912-7870 www.thekingfalafel.com february 2016 I BOROMAG.COM I 31

he Steinway Court Veterinarian just signed their fourth 10-year lease on the hidden space tucked just off of Steinway near Mama’s Empanadas. A pristine two-level building, the vet is furnished with exam rooms, a surgery room, digital radiography, X-ray machines, even esophageal probes and dental equipment. The office is run by Robert Glasser, D.V.M., and his wife, Sara. The two have been married 32 years and work together on a regular basis. “Sara runs all the business aspects,” explains Dr. Glasser, “which allows me to focus on medicine and surgery. We have a lot of fun, and that’s how we have survived. You have to have fun.” When asked about some of his favorite stories, Dr. Glasser immediately begins smiling. “We had a very good client who came in a few times,” he explains. “The first time she came in, her cocker spaniel had an ear infection and a common skin irritation, so I sent her home with some antibiotics for the skin and some drops for the ears. When I called a few days later to check up and see how the cocker spaniel was doing, the woman said, ‘Oh, Dr. Glasser, she’s doing fabulous, just fabulous. I’m putting those drops all over her body, but I can’t get those capsules to stay in her ears!’” After a moment of laughter, we 32 I BOROMAG.COM I february 2016

So, the next time the woman came in, she handed me an empty plastic baggie. I asked her what it was, and she replied, ‘Oh, that’s her gas sample.’” “I said, ‘What?!’” “She goes, ‘That’s her wind sample. She’s passing so much wind, I can’t stand it. We had to cancel the bridge club meeting because it was so horrible. Can you run a complete analysis?’” We laugh again, uncontrollably, and then Dr. Glasser leans forward. “We do have a lot of fun, and there are terrific stories, but we want people

But when blood work is required along with abdominal X-rays and surgery, it’s a really big deal.” He encourages pet insurance and payment plans. The surgery revealed Mason had swallowed a toy plastic horse that was permanently lodged in his abdomen, but was now sitting on the counter in a plastic bag. “You see this little guy now,” he says, gently petting Mason. “The cost is always worth it.”

trength. Have you ever sat down and thought about what it means to you? How you would describe its role in your life? Though paradoxically both tangible and intangible at the same time, there is no simple definition of strength. Even though I work in this field, I never tire of discussing how strength lives in our day-to-day challenges, successes and discoveries. Recently, I had the pleasure of extending this conversation to three local women from differing life paths who all share the experience of strength training under the tutelage of Chris Carlsen from Iron Lion Performance. I find every expression of strength endlessly inspiring, whether mental, physical or emotional—and I would like to thank these beautiful women for their generosity of time and reflection.

Britney Duffy Student athlete Age 15

Strength means pushing yourself to be the very best you can be. To always keep trying and push harder and harder. Strength training has had a big impact in my life. I am a softball and volleyball player, so it has helped my serves become more powerful and my batting drive further. I have been training for about two years now, and my motivation has always been to become the strongest player that I can be in the sports that I play. I started my strength training in one of Chris’ youth programs. It was an amazing experience, and it has helped me get on my high school varsity softball and volleyball teams. Not only did I become a stronger and better athlete, but those programs helped me grow friendships with other kids my age. I would tell any female interested in strength training that it is a lot of hard work and dedication, but it is all worth it. I say, go for it! 34 I BOROMAG.COM I FEBRUARY 2016

Tracy Messer First-grade teacher of the deaf at Lexington School for the Deaf in Jackson Heights Late 20s

To me, strength is a skill. It’s something you need to practice, nurture and watch grow. It is more than being able to pick up heavy things; it encompasses your entire being—mentally, emotionally and physically. Strength training has changed my entire life. It gave me a passion I never knew I had. I always hated working out in the past. I found cardio machines boring, and I couldn›t stick to a workout regiment for more than a few weeks. I would dread going the gym, but once I started strength training, it became the highlight of my day. Now, I plan my day around my workouts, rather than seeing where I can fit them in my schedule, if it all. It has taught me how to take care of my body, which includes the kind of food I eat. It gave me a different outlook on the term diet. Strength training and eating properly go hand

in hand. I eat more now than I ever have. I started working with a trainer to get toned for my brother’s wedding. I went into it with that short-term goal—to look good in my dress. I would have never thought I’d still be doing it four years later. I was apprehensive in the beginning. I thought I would get “bulky.” It has changed my body and my self-image in ways I never thought possible. I am the leanest I have ever been; however, I am not the lightest I have ever been. Strength training has taught me that I don’t need to pay attention to the number on the scale. I now only weigh myself once a year at the doctor’s office. I can honestly say, without Chris, I wouldn’t be where I am today. He has taught me the meaning of strength and coaches me to push myself in a safe environment. To women considering strength training—do it and don’t ever look back! It will change you and your body. It will give you a whole new confidence you never knew you had and teach you to make yourself a priority.

Julia Christodoulou Real estate professional Mid 40s Strength is a word that makes me feel proud. To be seen as a strong woman makes me feel I can accomplish anything, and more importantly, get through anything. As a single woman fast approaching my fifth decade, being verbally identified as strong gives me more

confidence than the sexiest pair of high heels. It’s a confidence that precedes me into a room and props me up when I feel insecure. I know I can depend on my physical strength to survive anything that is affecting me, even emotionally. A good, physically demanding, sweat-inducing, tears-to-my-eyes kind of strength training session can cure me of anything. I just have to think, “I am strong!” My life changed forever when

FEBRUARY 2016 I BOROMAG.COM I 35

BODY & SOUL

I began strength training. As a former ballerina and an avid exerciser all my life, I have always valued the importance of physical activity. Strength training took my body to the next level. It didn’t happen overnight, but it did happen. I didn’t know what I was capable of until I held real heavy weights in my hands. I couldn’t believe how difficult and easy it was simultaneously. Today, I can’t fathom how my body took the shape I had always aspired to, but never achieved even after years of merely exercising. As a middle-aged woman, strength training has been my saving grace inside and outside of the gym. It has been my fountain of youth from which I will never stop drinking. It has provided me with the calmness and a focus my mind needs to function effectively. I cannot, will not, be without strength training in my life. It’s more than just a choice or a way of life. To me, it is life. This will be my ninth year training with Chris Carlsen. I don’t even think about it anymore. I just show up. It’s like breathing; my body looks better now than it did in my 20s. I don’t question the process; I just surrendered to his methods. Chris deconstructed all my bad habits and re-trained me, literally, on how to stand, walk and breathe. He started me slow, explaining to me as we went along. In time, results began to manifest, and I never looked back, or better. Due to our longstanding relationship, Chris can “read” me the minute I walk into the gym. By reading my body language, he can assess if I am tired and need to lift 38 I BOROMAG.COM I FEBRUARY 2016

Julia Christodoulou

light, or if I’m up to lifting heavier. It took a long time to get to where my muscle memory locks in and I can perform a lifting technique that will keep me injury-free and allow my strength to develop. The journey has been well worth it. I would highly encourage other (older) women to strength train. It not only keeps you healthy, physically and mentally, but the longterm dividends are priceless. As we get older, common ailments such as midlife weight gain, hormonal imbalances, and issues with bone density and stress wreak havoc on our bodies. Strength training gives us the ability to regain our stability and conquer

our health. It will prevent longterm wear and tear and sustain the suppleness of our muscles, strengthening the core—which will aid to prevent debilitating falls as we age. There will be setbacks, but I personally have never had an injury under Chris’ diligent eye. Moreover, I don’t remember the last time I had a cold. Yes, it’s an investment in time and money, but it’s an investment in your body. Your body has to last you a lifetime. Just like your home, you need to take care of it. ikram Dogra is one of Astoria’s most prolific photographers. Upon moving to the neighborhood 14 years ago, he instantly fell in love with Astoria and began photographing it. Drawing from thousands of images he has taken over the years, Dogra has composed a photo book entitled “East of East River: A Decade of Street Photography in Astoria & Long Island City, Queens, NY 2005-2014.” With about 140 images, the book was born out of a decade of a labor of love for a unique part of New York City, separated from Manhattan by the East River and connected to Vikram Dogra it by two beautiful bridges—so close, and yet worlds apart... n Dec. 26, 2012, Andrew Hamm sat down at his dining room table and drew a cartoon on a napkin. He took a picture of it on his phone and posted it on Twitter. The next day he did the same thing. And the next day. And the day after. This is the Idea behind Ahammaday. It’s a simple one—just draw something new every day and share it. Andrew was born in Halifax Nova Scotia, Canada. After two years of “a cartoon a day,” he decided to switch his format from a “free-form” cartoon style to the more rigid single-panel gag format, as seen in The New Yorker or The Far Side. With the change he was now able to submit his cartoons for publication.

His work can be characterized surreal and illogical, attempting to twist the mundane and innocuous. In the end, he just wants to leave viewers thinking, “OHHHHH, I get it!” Hamm has been published in The New Yorker and The Guardian. You can

visit his website at www. ahammaday.com to see more of his work or follow him on Instagram @ ahammaday. For more information you can email him at andrew@ahammaday.com. His work is currently on display and for sale at The Brass Owl on Ditmars Boulevard. february 2016 I BOROMAG.COM I 43
