Dear western Queens,

BRADLEY HAWKS

In the month that starts off with April Fools Day, it certainly is tempting to play a monumental practical joke. The truth is, however, there are far too many exciting things to share that are real— markets that are opening, restaurants that are changing, and art that is being created. To celebrate this month’s theme of Queens Rocks, we take a little detour to the Queens Museum, where a new Ramones exhibit opens on April 10th, honoring the birth of punk. Next door, the Queens Theatre offers coveted seats to see Adele. A brand new outpost of Lockwood will rock the museum, as well. Astoria even has a new rocker, Brook Wood, who will be headlining her own show at the world famous Bitter End. What could rock more than the opening of the LIC Flea & Food, featuring dozens of exciting new morsels, memorabilia, and makings? As always, please share with us your own personal anecdotes, and send me any tips, comments, news, or events to bhawks@boromag.com. No matter what those other boroughs claim, don’t be fooled. Queens really does rock.

Gratefully yours, Bradley Hawks

Do you want to say Hello to one of the world’s most popular singer/songwriters? Here’s your chance to do so and help provide a financial boost to one of Queens’ most popular art institutions. Queens Theatre is pleased to announce that its Annual Gala will be held on Monday, April 18. Each year, hundreds of community members, business leaders, and artists come together to celebrate another great year of performances on the Queens Theatre’s stages. The evening will begin with cocktails and a buffet dinner in Queens Theatre’s award-winning lobby, followed by program of honors and exciting live performances on the mainstage. There will be a silent auction featuring a variety of special prizes, including two pairs of tickets to Adele’s sold-out concert at Madison Square Garden,

a weeklong stay at a luxurious house in Costa Rica, tickets to Yankees game, restaurant gift certificates, airplane tickets, and more. This year, Queens Theatre is proud to honor a generous business leader for his support of the arts in Queens—Kevin Cummings, the President and CEO of Investors Bank. The evening’s program will include performances by Ronald K. Brown/ Evidence, a Dance Company and Dorrance Dance. The Annual Gala is critically important for Queens Theatre’s programming. In addition to celebrating another year of great performances on our stages, this event provides essential support for Queens Theatre’s theatre, dance, and family productions, education programs, new play development, and special events. Individual tickets are $250. Visit www.queenstheatre.org

Movies Plaza Story By Bradley Hawks

Few people set out to accomplish goals intended for the sheer purpose of enlightening themselves and enriching the lives of others. Jeff Orlick is one of those rare humans, and he recently set embarked on a new endeavor established with that very mission. You may know Orlick for his famous food tours of Jackson Heights, his annual Momo Crawl, or even the Ambassador Program he established to help outsiders find an accessible and affordable entrance to the food and cultures of the incredibly diverse neighborhood he calls home. But his most recent project, titled “Movies in the Plaza,” was designed to bring together humans from diverse languages and backgrounds to enjoy a series of films that transcend language. Viewers will gather each Wednesday evening (excluding April 20th) at Diversity Plaza in Jackson Heights. Everyone is encouraged to bring a blanket and snacks. No volunteers are needed. If you wish to contribute, you may simply donate a DVD that transcends language. “I started this because it is a space that should be used,” 10 I BOROMAG.COM I APRIL 2016

explains Orlick, “and we have such an interesting mix of people that provides a great challenge for social activities. I love the challenge of creating something that will appeal to people from many cultures, as well as the challenge of organizing an event for people who are not connected to the same social networks as I am.” “I will be playing movies that transcend language,” he continued. “This means movies that are not dependant on dialogue, either written or spoken. Right now, I plan on playing Buster Keaton movies and musicals such as “Fantasia.” This series is also part of my own education of film, so they are movies that I want to see—that is why I appreciate if people just come with a blanket and chill out on the plaza... because I want to watch the movies too!” Diversity Plaza is located just a half block north of the 7 train station located at 74th Street and Broadway in Jackson Heights. You can visit the event Facebook page for more details, as well as scheduled movies.

Let’s Go to

Lock wood! Story by Bradley Hawks

Once you get Mackenzi Farquer rolling, it would take a force of nature to slow her down. In just a few years, the bold, hilarious, warm, beautiful, and inspiring woman has launched not one, but three locations of her lifestyle and fashion stores, all of which fall under the umbrella of the name Lockwood. The little store that could was born from a labor of love known as Site Astoria, once located in the space now occupied by Mighty Balls. But when the baby grew up, wow, did she hit a rapid growth spurt! The original Lockwood just off of Broadway on 33rd Street quickly expanded a few doors down into Lockwood Style, then reached out into Jackson Heights, and on April 10th, will open a gift store in the Queens Museum. “I am excited about the collaboration of Queens artists and Queens items that pay homage to the borough,” says Farquer. “The spirit of the gift shop is almost like a love letter to Queens, keeping in focus with the mission of the museum.”

The newest Lockwood outpost has synced its ribbon cutting with the opening of the exhibit, “Hey! Ho! Let’s Go: Ramones and the Birth of Punk.” The exhibit pays tribute to the notorious punk band born in Forest Hills, Queens. “Buying items to coordinate with this exhibit was so much fun,” laughs Farquer. “We will be selling tons of Ramones and punk-themed things… clothing, postcards, you name it.” Staying aligned with the history of

the museum also means honoring the tradition of the 1939 and 1964 World’s Fairs held in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. “We will also be offering artist made items inspired by the museum’s unique spin on the world’s fair this summer,” confirms Farquer. If you haven’t yet visited a Lockwood Shop, this spring is the time to take an inaugural dive. Each location offers a unique selection, blended with some established favorites enjoyed all across the map. While these shops certainly offer a destination ideal for finding gifts, clothing, home furnishings, and cards, here’s a tip: Bring plenty disposable cash for yourself, because there are simply too many items to go home empty-handed.

THE ARTS

T

he art of digitally enhancing photography is a difficult skill mastered by very few, but You Are Here Studios has found itself a devoted following in Queens. Part of what makes this particular studio so exciting is its devotion to many of the iconic images that represent the best of the borough. Their photography has been seen at the Bryant Park holiday market, and will be enjoyed this summer at the LIC Flea and Food. You can also browse their prints at the new Lockwood Shop at the Queens Museum. You Are Here Studios is owned and run by Alex Benjamin and Lisa Cavanagh. While the business is three years old, they bring more than 20 years experience in the field, APRIL 2016 | BOROMAG.COM | 21

having studied photography at school and working at various fine art photography galleries and labs. They proudly shoot all of their own work and print everything in-house at their studio in Astoria. You Are Here Studios creates fresh photography using super-saturated colors, heightened textures and abstract elements. They love adding subtle references to retro/vintage imagery paired with eye-popping modern details. Old meets new, and it’s never looked better. They incorporate beautiful added textures, colors and graphic elements to each image. Great care is taken in offering high quality art by using only professional grade Epson luster paper and a large format printer featuring 9 different archival inks. The images go beyond standard

destination photography and stretch into the realm of fine art. Noteworthy landmarks mix with touchstones of visual culture creating memorable and

nostalgic images, which they hope will resonate deeply with customers.

#QNSMADE Story by Hayley Bridgewater

A

s a long time resident of Astoria, I have always enjoyed chatting with the locals about the ever-evolving nature of our diverse neighborhood. Though there will always be subjects that will cause debate about our changing community, one thing that we are quick to embrace is a recent formation of an artist’s collective – a bonding of area craftspeople and creators excited to claim the “QNSMade” label. This April, I am thrilled to continue to shine a light on small businesses working to bring you handmade, unique, and quality goods crafted with heart and a true love for Queens. Founded by Flushing native, Amy Wu, the goal of QNSMADE is to give a voice to the people who make up the fabric of our beautiful borough. 2.3 million people call Queens home, speaking 138 languages in over 125 different neighborhoods. Here are just a handful of the artists who prove that Queens is much more than merely a suburb of Manhattan. www.qnsmade.co

Little Prick Shop Tiffany Ng Creator and Owner Easily the bearer of one of the most memorable names among Western Queens businesses, hobby knitter and Sunnyside resident Tiffany Ng, started Little Prick Shop on a whim. Originally taught to knit by her Cantonese grandmother, she has been crafting since childhood as an outlet for extra energy. After a close friend gifted her a tiny knitted cactus pincushion, Tiff replicated her own as an office desk decoration (an ode to not being able to keep plants alive). Quickly, people were asking her if they could purchase them. Paired with a clever name and an online presence, Little Prick Shop keeps growing and growing. Tiffany is proud to be a part of the maker/crafter community in Queens and is excited to help highlight the fact that QNS doesn’t just have the best ethnic food in the city, but that there’s a huge artistic, creative, and crafty community in Queens that is under represented For more information on Tiffany and her “little pricks” SHOP: littleprickshop.etsy.com / EMAIL: littleprickshop@gmail.com INSTAGRAM @LittlePrickShop

Metrix Jewelry Lisa Mignoli Creator and Owner An FIT graduate and a Floral Park native, this Western Queens designer grew up creative. Her childhood activities included reconstructing t-shirts, making tote bags and fashioning friendship bracelets. Though she has support from friends and family, Metrix Jewelry is a one women show, with Lisa crafting her pieces in her parent’s Floral Park home. She has recently been experimenting with 3D prints designed by her, then printed by local companies in various metals.

Though Metrix Jewelry can be found online and in local boutiques/markets in Queens and Brooklyn, Lisa’s favorite shows are local, in the LIC/Astoria area at LIC Flea and Astoria Market. She cites a recent joint Instagram giveaway featuring a group of talented Queens makers as an indication of a much needed and welcomed growing community of artisans in the area. Queens Knits Christine Gibson Crafter and Owner Queens native and busy stayat-home mom, Christine began her business as a way to provide herself with all of the adorable handmade baby accessories she admired in the marketplace. Once she realized that there was interest in her unique knitwear, Queensknits was born. After discovering the support of a vibrant Queens-focused arts community online, she started to chan-

nel her work into local businesses, pop-up shops, and area markets. Many of her goods can be seen at shops like The Brass Owl, Communitea, Inside Astoria, and the Little Soap Shop. Like many other local artists, Christine feels embraced by Queens residents and is happy for the interest in shopping local. No Fork Eats Beth Wrubleski Chef and Owner Born out of baking for friends, baking for family, creating that perfect smile that comes after eating something ridiculously yummy, Queens-based catering business, No Fork Eats specializes in playful takes on sweet treats, savory eats and a variety of snacks that don’t require utensils. The label ‘handcrafted’ is certainly apropos in this situation, as all of Beth’s creations are hands on. Hand rolled, hand stuffed, hand packaged ~ and the best part is that they’re all hand held. Though they do a lot of private orders through their website, No Fork Eats is proud to be offered in local businesses Astoria Coffee and QED. They are grateful to the neighborhood that has given them a place to launch and introduce them to a supportive community that is very prosmall business. Launched at the LIC Flea two years ago, Beth feels that the Queens community embraced them from the start. Fellow vendors, customers, and other businesses have become friends, repeat customers and business partners. “Queens as a borough is all about love, passion, and authenticity and that’s what we bring to our food. It is incredibly rewarding to make sweets for this community.”

an you believe the fourth year of the LIC Flea & Food will launch on April 9th and 10th? The past three seasons have seen the birth and development of so many innovative and delicious ideas, and it seems the excitement only intensifies each spring. The beautiful outdoor lot nestled on the LIC waterfront at the corner of 5th Street and 46th Avenue has hosted artists, chefs, actors, athletes, painters, politicians, celebrities, t.v. shows, games, festivals, and an unmentionable host of activities and vendors that celebrate the very best this borough has to offer.

By attending the flea, visitors gain access not only to some of the most delicious foods and rare gifts in the city, but they also acquire an opportunity to offer patronage to many small businesses that are often on the verge of becoming something so much greater. Established favorites, such as Butcher Bar, act as a backbone season after season. But newcomers are able to not only offer their goods to the public—they also find a space to network,

experiment, assess, and evaluate. You won’t just walk away with a killer slow roasted barbecue and a vintage necklace or eclectic painting. Take a moment to mingle, listen, and learn. The stories of the LIC Flea and the history and unique journeys of its vendors will astound you. BORO is excited to offer a sneak peek into what visitors will be able to enjoy this season. But make sure you visit, and keep coming back. The vendors will change all season long, APRIL 2016 | BOROMAG.COM | 39

and the products will, too—but also expect guest appearances, activities for the whole family, as well as ethnic festivals and talented musicians. The LIC Flea isn’t merely an outdoor food fair or riverside beer garden. It’s not just an urban flea or a back lot gallery. It is a symposium for some of the city’s greatest thinkers, creators, and innovators to come together and share with the world the gifts and talents to which they have devoted so much of their time. Could there be any better way to spend a weekend this spring? LIC Flea & Food April 9 – October 30 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. 5-25 46th Avenue Long Island City, NY www.licflea.com

veryone enjoys a healthy meal that is prepared quickly with fresh ingredients. It’s even sweeter when you can grab it on the way to work, returning from the gym or have it delivered quickly to your home. Create on 30th Avenue has been a neighborhood favorite for precisely that kind of meal for several years. But whatever 30th Avenue has, Ditmars quickly wants for itself. In some instances, Ditmars does it even better. Create recently opened its sister location, known as Create Ditmars. The new spot is positioned just around the corner from Trattoria L’Incontro in the overflow space formerly known as Vino di Vino. Now the wine bar and pizzeria has officially morphed into a destination of its own. Open daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., the expansive restaurant feels industrial and pristine, achieving an ambiance that is comfortable, yet lends itself to a quick turning of the table. Customers can still design their own custom salads, as the toppings are far more reasonably priced than most Manhattan competitors. But the real draw seems to be freshly squeezed

juices with alluring names (one, The Swag, blends carrots and oranges with lemon, kale, and ginger) and breakfast sandwiches adorned with Astoriainspired monikers (The Ditty stacks grilled turkey with pepper jack and avocado). You can also enjoy paleo, quinoa, turkey burger, and acai bowls, as well as yogurt bowls, steal cut oatmeal, and a selection of wraps, ‘slamwiches’ and salads. A market table offers vegetable eggplant balls, sofrito tofu and an array of meats and proteins. Smashed avocado toast sandwiches blend that delicious, creamy verdigris with toppings such as fried eggs, hummus and pico de gallo. A selection of almost a dozen varieties of mac and cheese bowls is one of the most notable new offerings. Customers can indulge in the cheeseblanketed elbow macaroni adorned with toppings that range from truffle oil to barbecue chicken, salmon and turkey meatballs. French fry lovers can mix it up, ordering anything from classic disco fries to truffled sweet potato fries, or even a chipotle version complete with melted queso fresco. Everything is delicious, prepared fresh, and available in preset recipes, or easily customized to meet almost any dietary preference or need. One morning, I started the day with The Ditty and a Matcha Green Latte with almond milk and agave. It was estimated to arrive between 30 and 40 minutes, but my buzzer rang after only 20 had passed. Now that’s the kind of service that will keep me coming back. 29-21 Ditmars Blvd, Astoria, NY 11105 36-03 30th Ave, Astoria, NY 11103

FOOD & DRINK

spreading the love Story by Bradley Hawks

In recent years, restaurateurs have heralded Astoria as a both a vital testing ground and successful launching pad for restaurant concepts before transferring them into Manhattan. Taverna Kyclades, Rizzos Fine Pizza, and Brooklyn Bagel are just a trio of hit examples. There’s also the Bareburger enterprise, which became a mega success in Astoria and is now enjoyed across the globe. One of the most recent labors of love to make the leap into Manhattan is Il Bambino, Astoria’s beloved paninoteca, tapas eatery and wine bar. The popular sandwich spot born eight years ago on 31st Avenue recently opened the doors of its second location in Greenwich Village. “Our goal has always remained the same since our inception—to source the best quality ingredients and marry them together in such a way that it creates a one of a kind experience for our customers,” explains Darren Lawless. The newest incarnation, located at 48 West 8th Street, offers many of the same favorites enjoyed in the Astoria

location. Fresh artisan cheeses, imported charcuterie, inventive salads, antipasti and crostini still shine brightly in the new setting. Fingerling potatoes tossed in truffle aioli and topped with crisp shallots and pecorino offer the perfect start. A Bacon, Egg, & Cheese Mimosa of baby arugula sprinkled with shaved egg and a zesty bacon vinaigrette provides a delightful salad to follow. But as always, the real fun comes from building crostini PuPu Platters or ordering by the pair, with toppings like truffled egg salad and speck or chorizo with apricot butter and goat cheese, while the array of panini provide a heartier fare. If you are visiting the city, there’s no need to rush and eat at home before you leave. You can always enjoy a glass of wine and a savory square here in Astoria, just like before. www.ilbambinonyc.com 34-08 31st Ave, Queens, NY 11106 48 W 8th St, New York, NY 10011 APRIL 2016 I BOROMAG.COM I 45

Story by Bradley Hawks

f you can make it here, you can make it anywhere. New York City has more potential stars per square mile than any other city in the world. An artist’s repeated resilience is what sifts the stars from the hopefuls. The prospect of finding your own corner of this city’s expansive musical stage can be daunting. But that is precisely what Astoria’s Brook Wood is attempting to do. A native of Indianapolis, Indiana, Wood moved to New York in August 2013 to pursue a career in musical theater. Though she was met with several encouraging moments of success and numerous affirmations of her talent, Wood soon realized that singing her face off with a full rock-band was much more her cup of tea. Brook has performed as a principal singer for Holland America Cruise Lines, starred in Jeremy Schonfeld’s musical “SPUN” at The Adirondack 46 I BOROMAG.COM I APRIL 2016

Theatre Festival, and just premiered her first solo show at The Bitter End, which featured an entire set of Schonfeld’s music. “It can be really tough knowing when to say yes, and when to say no,” admits the young singer, just 25 years old. “But I have learned you don’t have to say yes to everyone, and you shouldn’t do things you don’t feel passionate about. As long as you are humble, kind, and grateful, you just need to be you.” The beginning of what promises to be a tremendous career can be the most exciting time to watch such a gifted singer. Wood’s voice ranges from a soft intensity that lends itself to intimate storytelling to an astonishingly big, brassy belt that catches audiences by surprise. But her performance is always genuine, sincere, and sung from the heart. This is an Astoria star worth keeping an eye on. Wood will be performing a full

set on May 9th at New York City’s oldest rock club, The Bitter End, at 9 p.m. featuring tunes by Schonfeld, accompanied by what Wood likes to refer to as “a kickin’ band.” Wood will once again take the same stage shared by Janis Joplin, Norah Jones, The Grateful Dead, Lady Gaga, and Carole King, among so many other greats. Be sure to block off that Monday on your calendar, and prepare to witness something special. Brook Wood may be a tiny little match, but she ignites a brilliant fire.

urkish delights are no longer just the rosewater sugary sweets offered to Edmund by The White Witch in Narnia. The soft pink confections have stepped out of the wardrobe and onto the wooden cutting board of the Grilled Halloumi platter at Ovelia. Known in Turkey as loukoumi, the rose petal confections are plated alongside dried figs, offering a sweet contrast to the salty cheese and savory slices of bastourma—a cured

and air-dried pastrami-like beef. “My family actually originates from Anatolia, a region of Turkey,” ChefOwner Peter Giannakis explained. During a recent vacation to Greece, Giannakis discovered a restaurant serving Anatolian cuisine. “It was delicious,” he said, “and it reminded me of a lot of flavors from home, so I decided to add a little bit of that to our menu.” While Ovelia remains one of the neighborhood’s most respected

Greek eateries, some other exciting new flavors now take a costarring role on the menu. The Melitzanosalata, for instance, arrives with a warm basket of toasted pita triangles, all to be dunked into a mound of fire roasted eggplant which has been brightened with sundried tomatoes and fennel. The Politiki salad is a deceptively simple dish, created with a colorful mélange of shredded white and red cabbage mixed with peppery arugula, carrots, celery, and lemon. A more distinctly Turkish plate is Ovelia’s crispy take on a lahmatzoun, which involves a wafer thin, crisp flatbread spread with a tangy bolognese of minced lamb, pork, beef, onions, and parsley. It is intended, as are many of the new dishes, to be enjoyed as a sharing plate. “It’s a lot more fun to share,” Giannakis said, “and it’s really the true essence of the Greek experience. find in your typical taverna.” Favorites like the Greek coffee crusted skirt steak and the wildly popular saganaki burger remain on the menu, as do the sesame crusted cubes of feta drizzled with honey. But now guests can enjoy some new flavors, as well—like the tas kebab, a daily rendition of a Smyrnean beef stew served over a skillet of plump fries or cut pasta. The curry in the Garidopilafi adds an unexpectedly welcomed spice to the shrimp over a pleasantly unorthodox bed of wild

rice and chickpeas. Mousaka is now served in individual clay dishes, as well as Ovelia’s incredibly addictive pastitzio, which is still often offered as a special. The Kreatopita—a kantaifi wrapped leg of lamb pie—was such a hit during brunch, it has now graduated to the dinner menu as well. The cocktail menu has also evolved, including jazzed up versions of everything ranging from a fig-infused old fashioned to a more sophisticated take on a whiskey sour.

Desserts are some of the most exciting newcomers on the menu. An ice cream sundae is built with kaimaki ice cream, which is made with salepi, a regional root vegetable that has been ground into flour and blended with a hint of saffron. “The mastika that is added is the real star,” Giannakis claimed, “and it lends the ice cream its wonderful gumminess.” The whole mound is drizzled with sweet, dark cherries. Alongside the decadent creation is a piece of soko-

freta—essentially a Greek after dinner cookie dipped in milk chocolate. “Change is always good,” Giannakis said, smiling after explaining the process of making the unique ice cream treat. I certainly agree. But sometimes, as in this case, change is great.
