CONTENTS This month is all about the kids of Queens (and their parents, of course). You shared your cutest shots of the children in your life with us on Instagram (page 10). An Astoria author released a cookbook to help new parents cook for the whole family (page 16). A Long Island City mother launched a business making all-natural popsicles (page 22). There’s a new indoor play place in LIC (page 38). A camp is teaching kids tennis (page 50), while a nonprofit is tutoring recent immigrant children (page 51). We’re also highlighting a bakery that has been around for almost a decade where you can sample traditional Middle Eastern treats KATRINA MEDOFF (page 32). And as always, we’re spotlighting editor-in-chief some western Queens residents in our Street Style and Interior Design features. If you’d like to share any news with us, email katrina@boromag.com. STREET STYLE
KEEPING IT SIMPLE BY MARIE TORIO
Jordan (@rjsalinasss), who works as a senior data analyst for the U.N., said his style is “trendy and hip.” His distressed dark jeans, crew-neck tee and Converse sneakers were hip but comfortable for a day of running errands.
Cait, a graphic designer who was visiting Astoria, defines her style as “comfortable and minimal.” Her black-andwhite look was definitely minimal yet eye-catching at the same time. Love how her blue nails added a pop of color!

his month, Astorians were keeping their style refreshingly simple. I spotted these stylish western Queens residents and visitors while they were enjoying a coffee break, running errands on their day off, enjoying a Friday evening with a friend or catching brunch with family. Several of my favorite looks this month were monochrome or used classic light and dark color contrasts. Even those wearing prints kept their style minimal: one woman wore a dress with an all-over print but paired it with nude-colored accessories, while another had two prints on one shirt — but they were both black and white. Plus, the jewelry this month — on both women and men — added personality to the looks. Keep styling, Astoria! Jessica (@caterpillar_ complex), an Astoria actress, was enjoying a walk around the neighborhood. She mentioned she keeps an open mind when it comes to her outfits: “If I like it I wear it,” she said. Her relaxed, off-the-shoulder, printed dress with nude flats and a nude bag came together for a chic look, perfect for a beautiful day out and about.
Yusuf (@joseph.elshazly) works in marketing and was enjoying his day off visiting Astoria to have brunch. His style is “business casual,” he said. His jeans came together nicely with a button-down shirt that was just slightly a different color, but with an understated print, and his black boots brought the look together. I also appreciate when men can rock interesting jewelry pieces — check out this closer look at his ring.

E Mai (@tarisvault) was visiting Astoria to enjoy brunch with family. She is an Egyptian jewelry designer and importer and describes her style as “casual but trendy.” Her jeans, jacket and jewelry were stylish and gave me insight to her personality. She was wearing some of the jewelry she designs and imports. Such cute pieces!
Jai Nima (@jainima), a photographer and Astoria resident, said her style is based on her mood that day. Her edgy maxi skirt and monochrome top paired with Converse and a hat made her ensemble very fashionable in an effortless way.
Maha (@mahalabaya_) is an accountant who was visiting Astoria to grab a bite to eat. She describes her style as “casual boho.” Her rolled-up jeans, black-and-white checkered button-down and beautiful curly hair was an all-around hip look.

hen we asked our readers to tag us (@boromagazine) in their Instagrams of children in Astoria, Long Island City and Sunnyside, we knew we were in for a large dose of cuteness. What we didn’t expect was for the kids to be quite this fashionable. Might we see some of these boys and girls in our Street Style pages in just a few years? Take a look at some of these adorable shots, with kids posing by iconic western Queens locales like Astoria Park, the Sunnyside mural and LIC’s view of the Manhattan skyline.

NEW MOM’S COOKBOOK

storia resident Aurora Satler worked in food media for over 10 years. Her job description fluctuated constantly. Satler owned her own catering company and also worked as a culinary creative director, all to “produce beautiful pieces of edible art,” she fondly remembered. When she gave birth to her first child, she expressed her love to him through homemade, organic purees that kept her son healthy. But there was one problem: “I was starving,” Satler recalled, always “forgetting meals and skipping meals” while focusing on her kid’s health in front of her own. “It has to be easier than this,” she thought. “There has to be a way to feed everyone in one fell swoop.”

FOOD + DRINK The pregnancy, post-natal and children’s cookbooks that she came across at the time all had a pretty short shelf-life, and Satler wanted to create something much more versatile. “The same batch of puree for a baby can be used back into a full adult meal,” she observed. Not only does this streamline things for parents, but it “[changes] the way we think about separating baby food and adult food, because the end goal is the same.” Parents want dinners enjoyed by all and with minimal fuss, so incorporating components of a child’s
18
JUNE 2018
meal into the parents’ is a total win-win. Enter “The Ultimate New Mom’s Cookbook,” Satler’s guide to feeding a growing family. Covering “pregnancy to finger meals, breastfeeding foods, introducing solids, complex combinations, finger foods, family meals” and more, the stunning, 224-page edition packed with 80+ recipes is separated into seven chapters: Pregnancy Foods, Getting Ready for Baby, Breastfeeding Foods, First Foods (4 to 6 months), Combination Foods (6 to 8 months), Expanding Tastes (8 to 10 months) and Family Meals (12 months and up). These sections also feature expert help advice from dietician Allison Childress, who specializes in women’s and children’s nutrition. Making baby food isn’t as daunting as it seems; “Babies eat so little when they start, and a batch of puree goes really far and lasts a long time [after] freezing the components,” Satler said. In fact, the whole process can be somewhat of a reawakening for parents, as “it gets you excited about food again.” In the full-color book, you can expect stir-fries and fish tacos, desserts and dips, salads, salsas and plant-based burgers. Every recipe is accompanied by a gorgeous photo, shot by Satler herself. Also pictured? Astoria moms and their kids,
posed around the neighborhood, with smiles indicative of happy bellies. Satler believes that this special community of Queens-based parents all helped her get her book into print. The “spirit of Astoria moms is incredibly welcoming and helpful” and has allowed her to promote a nurturing, well-fed community, Satler explained. “Every time we have a friend over, there’s always food on the table … as sharing food socially creates better habits for children,” she said. When Satler’s son “eats with friends instead of a TV, [it] creates better table manners, [and] might discourage pickiness, enticing him to try [new] things.” Cooking for kids is hard enough, but it can be a joy with the proper resources. “I don’t want it to feel like work,” Satler said, as she’s hoping to “ease the transition into parenthood.” And for her, this book is all about paying forward the help she’s been given: “I’ve been given so many lifts up [by others],” Satler explained, and now she’s looking to give everything that she can back to those looking for well-versed guidance. Satler’s book is on sale June 19 and is available for order on Amazon. She’ll be promoting the book at Astoria Bookshop on June 21.

Brisket Sliders with Carrot Cilantro Slaw Try this recipe by Aurora Satler of “The Ultimate New Mom’s Cookbook” to make a tasty, family-friendly meal. Ingredients:
2 lbs. cooked brisket (see below) 4 potato rolls/brioche buns for serving Carrot cilantro slaw (recipe below)
Carrot Cilantro Slaw Ingredients:
½ teaspoon honey 2 tablespoons olive oil ¼ teaspoon cumin 1 clove fresh garlic, minced ¼ teaspoon salt 2 cups grated carrot 1 cup cilantro leaves 1/3 cup sliced scallions (about 2 scallions)
Bixby’s Better than Best Brisket Ingredients (8-10 Servings):
6 oz. ketchup 1 ¼ oz. (¼ cup) liquid smoke, usually found in same aisle as barbecue sauce 1 ½ teaspoons garlic salt 1 ½ teaspoons onion powder ½ teaspoon cayenne ½ teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper ½ teaspoon dry mustard 1 ½ teaspoons Worcestershire Sauce 4-5 lb. brisket, fat trimmed
Recipe:
Photos courtesy of Aurora Satler
Preheat oven to 375°F and fill a 9x12 inch casserole dish or a Dutch oven with 1 inch of water. In a medium bowl mix all ingredients except brisket. Lay your brisket fat side up in your prepared baking dish and pour sauce over. Cover your baking dish with a lid or aluminum foil and bake 1 hour per pound. Your brisket will be done when it so tender enough to fall apart easily when tested with a fork. To make the slaw, in a small bowl whisk honey, olive oil, cumin, garlic and salt. Next, in a medium bowl mix grated carrot, cilantro and scallion. Dress carrot mixture to taste with honey-cumin dressing. To assemble sliders, divide cooked brisket between four buns and top with carrot cilantro slaw or serve it as a side.

SHE’S A COOL MOM
LIC mother launches Smooth Pops just in time for summer BY LIZZ SCHUMER @ESCHUMER @LIZZSCHUMER
It was one of those sweltering Long Island City days and 6-month-old Rock Simmons needed a cool-down treat. He was still too young to hold a popsicle stick, but a Flav-Or-Ice freezie pop hit the spot — until he wanted more. His mom, Movitzsa Simmons, couldn’t let herself give him all that sugar and artificial color and flavor, but she also couldn’t find a product that gave Rock the tasty summer treat he wanted without unnatural additives. Thus began Smooth Pops, a 100 percent natural product that Rock and his mom can both enjoy, guilt-free. The tubular Smooth Pops came about as a nostalgia-driven answer to a common problem. As much as Simmons loved freezie pops as a kid, as a nutrition-savvy adult, she couldn’t justify it for her child. “Looking at labels as a parent, it’s scary to know that even in natural products, companies sneak in binders like guar gum and xanthan,” Simmons explained. “Smooth Pops are just simple, all-natural ingredients with zero additives — just 100 percent whole fruit, filtered water and organic cane sugar.” She added that the tubular package works great for young kids to enjoy on their own, with less mess. And enjoy he does! Chief tasting officer Rock, now 2, approves all of Simmons’ cre-

ations, some of which come from old family recipes. All Smooth Pops use the entire fruit, including pulp, to retain flavor, texture and nutritional value. Currently, Simmons makes strawberry-watermelon, mango, blue-raspberry, pineapple-peach and lemon-limeonade flavors. “I chose fruit blends that I love and that give the boldest and most refreshing tastes when combined, so with that in mind, I essentially made all my favorites,” Simmons said. “The lemon-limeonade is a family recipe that is really unique and gets the perfect balance between sweet, sour and citrus tartness.” As a participant in the StartUP! Business Plan Competition administered by the Queens Economic Development Corporation, Simmons and other aspiring business owners received technical assistance and training in operations, marketing and financial statements over an eight-month course. At the end of the course, Simmons took home the award in the food category, beating out 40 other teams and winning
$10,000 to jump-start her company. The funding helped Simmons produce and make her Smooth Pops ready for retail. She expects to launch her treats in time to beat the heat this summer. And Smooth Pops won’t stop at the kidfriendly fruit tubes. Simmons hopes to launch crème pops, which she called a “HUGE hit” in test markets, as well as tea blends and chocolate flavors. “We also want to branch out into alcohol and fruit-based pops — think strawberry daiquiri with real strawberries in a pop,” Simmons added. “Essentially, we want Smooth Pops to be an all-natural and refreshing snack, treat or indulgence for everyone, anytime.” As an entrepreneur, Simmons said she has also learned not to fear sharing her own ideas. By participating in the StartUP! Competition, she consulted with others in the industry to spread her idea and help give birth to a solution. “Pick one idea that really solves a problem for you, and focus on helping others
solve that same problem with your solution,” she advised. “As a woman, mom and entrepreneur, I would also say confidence in yourself is key. “We are already built with what we need to be entrepreneurs,” Simmons added. “Moms manage their homes and lives like CEOs without even blinking an eye. Young,
gutsy women are changing how the world is run every day. It’s a women’s world and moms birth it.” Smooth Pops will hit local specialty grocers and natural and health food stores starting in June. For specific locations and more information, follow @iLuvSmoothPops in Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

FOOD + DRINK
Sublime SWEETS By ELISABETH BECKER
Al-Sham Sweets & Pastries sits on Steinway Street in Astoria, within a four-block stretch of Middle Eastern restaurants, bakeries, groceries, jewelry sellers and allpurpose shops. From the outside, Al-Sham appears unremarkable, as one awning among many. But inside, the scents of butter, baked nuts and rosewater sweeten the air. I arrived on a summer-like day in early May at opening time, 11 a.m., to eat the famed kunafa at its freshest. Co-owner Talal Nabulsi waved me out of the bakery. “Can you wait 25 minutes?” he asked with a smile, rushing back into the kitchen to ascertain that nothing had burned. But he didn’t leave me empty-handed while I waited: he sent me out with a pistachio baklava, a semolina cookie filled with spiced dates, an apricot butter cookie and what appears to be a small edible bird’s nest of phyllo dough, a generous layer of nuts glued to its top. Al-Sham co-owners and brothers, Talal and Sam Nabulsi, grew up in Jordan. They hail from a family of chefs, having learned the trade from their father, taught by his own father. When I asked Talal Nabulsi how he mastered baking such a wide array of sweets, he shrugged. “You know, when your father does something, and it’s in your family, that’s how you learn it,” he said. “You are born into it. My father showed us everything.” Their family’s first restaurant opened in Jordan in 1935. The brothers opened Astoria’s Al-Sham nine years ago, in 2009, in this Middle Eastern neighborhood, with

the aim of satisfying cravings from across the region. “Our sweets are Palestinian, Jordanian, Saudi Arabian. Baklava, that is Turkish,” Talal Nabulsi explained. Reflecting the diversity of New York City and their own familial crossings across borders are sweets from around the world, not only kunafa and kadayif, but also baklava and stuffed jelly rolls fill their display. They largely serve the local populace in the neighborhood, devoted customers who flock to the shop for freshly baked sweets hailing from across the Middle East. “Our customers come every day, because they know we bake fresh stuff every morning," said Talal Nabulsi with a smile and an eye on the oven at all times. Under the hot sun of this summer-like day, I delved into the selection of cookies that Nabulsi gave me while I waited, all as a preamble to the main act: the kadayif. First, I sampled a butter cookie, its center filled with thick apricot preserves. Its balance was remarkable: buttery richness broken through by sweetness and a hint of tart from the fruit. Next, a semolina cookie (the dough cooked without sugar) stuffed with ani-
seed and cinnamon-spiced date preserves. It was more aromatic than sweet. I followed this by a small piece of baklava, generously soaked in butter and sugar syrup, plump with crushed pistachios. This was, I realized, the first baklava I have eaten in America that did not break my heart. Finally, I bit into the phyllo dough bird’s nest, nuts just caramelized, with a crunch. The sweetness was again subtle, enough to satisfy a child without overwhelming an adult. When I returned after 25 minutes, large silver trays of just-baked kunafa and kadayif were resting on the counter. I began with a square of the kadayif, saving the best for last. Where there is rosewater, it is softly aromatic, a light complement rather than a floral distraction to this nut-stuffed pastry.
Photos: Marie Torio/BORO
While the kadayif was delicious, as the cookies were, the kunafa of Al-Sham remained the star. It simply cannot be outshined. With a single bite, I was transported to a restaurant, two hours outside of Istanbul, where I first indulged in this cheese-based dessert, bathed in butter and coated in a combination of pastry and crushed pistachios. Following my trip to Turkey, I sought out kunafa in West Berlin (where there are good contenders in the neighborhoods of Wedding and Neukolln), in London and New York. This is, hands down, from Istanbul to Berlin, London to New York, the best kunafa I have ever eaten. It is sublime. I am not the only one who thinks so. Maryam, a young woman from the neighborhood, arrives with her 3-year-old daughter to indulge in “the best of the best kunafa, baked from a family recipe, history of crossings and new beginnings, each morning in Astoria.

he LIC Flea & Food market will be up and running again the weekend of June 9 to 10 on the Long Island City waterfront. Two weekends later, June 23 to 24, the Astoria Flea & Food market also returns to the Kaufman Astoria Studios. Both weekends, you’ll find a carefully curated mix of artisan, global food, local craft beer and vintage items. The market welcomes back mainstays such Don Ceviche, Down East Lobstah, Antojitos Charlie and Empanada Papa. Don Ceviche offers a delicious taste of Peru made fresh on site. At Antojitos Charlie, you can choose from their amazing array of traditional Mexican cuisine, and Empanada Papa has mouthwatering chicken, beef and cheese empanadas for sale. New to the market this year is Believe Me I Can Cook, bringing a unique fusion of Puerto Rican and Thai food. Will’s beans are delicious with white rice and chicken satay. San Antonio’s Wood Fired Pizza will also be making their artisanal pizzas made with fresh mozzarella right in front of you. If you’re in the mood for something sweet, stop by Delicacy Brigadeiros Craft for authentic Brazilian “brigadeiros” truffles, which are exclusive to the LIC & Astoria Flea & Food markets. Child’s Play BY REBECCA PATTON
@BECCAPATTONSAYS @BECCAPATTONSAYS
Filled with high-rises, sharp angles and chrome, Long Island City is arguably the most industrial, built-up neighborhood in Queens. But a new addition to the area hopes to make LIC a little more soft, colorful and fun. Enter Mini Land Play, a children’s indoor play place that just opened on March 10 of this year. From the outside, nothing gives away its cheery contents, save for the happy rainbow logo above the door. However, inside lies a veritable cornucopia of bright colors, creative playsets and happy kids.
O
wner Shu Yeh, who lives in LIC, is behind every tiny detail of Mini Land Play, from the space itself to the equipment and everything in between. As for where the idea came from, Yeh explained that she is originally from Taiwan and whenever she’d go home to visit, she noticed these indoor play places, which aren’t as common here in the States.

“I know that Long Island City has a lot of parks, but … when it rains or when it’s cold, with the children, there’s nowhere to go to play,” she lamented — a sentiment which other New York parents can no doubt relate to. For that reason, the store was a passion project for Yeh, who not only works a fulltime day job in addition to Mini Land Play but also has a young baby and a toddler. In fact, her 3-year-old daughter was the reason she wanted to open an indoor children’s space: “I just want her to be happy,” Yeh said. “Someplace to play in the winter time, on snowy days, rainy days — so she doesn't need to get locked up in the apartment.” Her 3-year-old, by the way, is Mini Land Play’s “manager,” whom Yeh jokingly hired to run the store. The name itself, Mini Land Play, came from the Korean cartoon “Robocar Poli,” which Yeh’s daughter watches. She explained that there is a character named JUNE 2018 I BOROMAG.COM

Mini in the show, who gets in a fight with her friends, blocks off an area of the playground, and declares it Mini Land. As Yeh tells it, she and her husband heard that scene and said, “Wow, Mini Land! That’s a really good name! Let’s just use that.” She went on to explain that they added “Play” to the name to emphasize that it was a play place. Thus, Mini Land Play was born. The first step was finding the space, but Yeh said she was rejected several times before she finally met a landlord who was also from Asia, and she said it felt like they were family. He didn’t want a restaurant in his space, and when Yeh explained that she was launching a children’s business, he was pleased. “I'm really lucky to find him,” she said. Next came the equipment. Since Yeh knew of so many similar places in Taiwan, she started by talking to those businesses and asking where they got their equipment. Those Taiwan stores then introduced Yeh to their Japanese manufacturer. Yeh is also fluent in Japanese, which came in handy. She ended up ordering all of her equipment from Japan, which took two months to arrive by boat. Yeh said that it took four or five months to get everything furnished and installed.

“I was paying the rent, and there's nothing going on in my store ... the whole time,” Yeh said. “Luckily, all [those] days are past, but it was very hard.” And while she was busy speaking with contractors and getting everything set up, her husband, who also has a full-time job, was at home watching the children. “He's been very supportive,” she said. “Otherwise I couldn't do it, and I don't have a nanny, I don't have family here, so nobody [else] can take care of the children." Fortunately, all of their hard work paid off, and the equipment was worth the wait. It’s not your run-of-the-mill McDonald’s variety, either — in fact, Yeh sounded almost offended when I mentioned the playgrounds that many fast food chains have, which are made of cheap plastic and easily conduct static electricity. Mini Land Play has three carousels, a pirate boat, a ball pit (the kids’ favorite, according to her), a jumpy house, slides and even a room to fly balloons around. “It's a very, very safe place,” Yeh said. “Everything is very soft.” Indeed, the floor is covered in foam padding, and the equipment is comprised of a plush-looking plastic material, which looks similar to what inflatable pool toys are made out of.
which is a subscription-based service for kids’ activities in New York. As for what parents and kids can look forward to, Mini Land Play is currently renovating their basement, where they hope to host private birthday parties, have movie nights and offer classes in topics ranging from hip-hop and languages to science. They even plan to have baby swimming lessons starting in either July or August. Above all, however, Yeh just wants the kids to have a good time — because that was the whole point of starting Mini Land Play, after all. “I just want to provide a sort of … children's fun land in Long Island City,” Yeh said. “Whatever the weather is outside … children can always have fun, [be] happy — play.”

And their little customers love it, too — Mini Land Play’s website and social media accounts are filled with photos of happy kids submerged in the ball pit or riding the carousels. Yeh even has different characters come visit the kids: Past guests have included the Cookie Monster and the Dalmation Marshall from “Paw Patrol.” Not only that, but parents will be happy to learn that the space is incredibly clean, too. Children are required to sanitize their hands before entering the play area in addition to wearing socks. What’s more, all of their equipment — even the ball pit — is cleaned every day. Mini Land Play’s hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., seven days a week. The children’s age limit is 0-5, and parents or caretakers have to watch their children at all times. Yeh emphasized that this is not a daycare, and they don’t do drop-offs. Their rates are $12 per child for unlimited play on weekdays (you can even leave and come back later in the day if you keep your receipt), and $15 for two hours on weekends and holidays. You can also do monthly passes for $230 and weekly passes for $70. Mini Land Play has even partnered with KidPass,

alking through Caroline Mullen’s 33rd Street apartment felt like scrolling through an impeccably curated Pinterest board. The savvy writer shares her spacious apartment with two roommates, Rachel and Mary, and for this particular weekend, a friend’s cuddly pug Nelson. Mullen comes from a do-it-yourself family and took the lead on
decorating the place to perfection – from the copper accents in the kitchen to the refurbished shelves in her bedroom. Needless to say, I quickly developed major home-envy. Mullen, who works as an editorial assistant at Family Circle magazine, moved to Astoria last year and fell in love with the people (and the vibrant food scene). And the girls lucked out. The three-bedroom, ground-floor apartment has a spacious kitchen, a mudroom and entryway, and even a cozy nook serving as their living room. Mullen has always had a passion for home décor and design — which is one of her fo-
cuses at work — so her roommates had no trouble letting her do her thing. “[My roommates] are a lot more laid-back and chill about their living space than I am,” she said. “They'll tell you, ‘Caroline decorated it and we just live here,’ because I can’t help myself. I am a complete bulldozer. I decorated like the moment we came in.” Thankfully they were in capable hands; Mullen has a great eye. She says she’ll gravitate toward certain colors, usually pinks, yellows, greens and blues, then run from there. Often she’ll find a statement piece or painting and base everything around that item, making for a subtle, uniform look without being overly “matchy-matchy.”

Not only is the space impeccably photogenic, it is also 100 percent unique, filled with pieces handcrafted by Mullen, a trait that runs in the family. “I come from a very crafty, do-it-yourself family,” she said. “My dad and my grandpa had a cabinet-making business and were really into woodworking. My dad, my grandpa and I all love old stuff and making stuff. My mom is crafty in a different way: she’s really

into scrapbooking and she loves to make decorations for the house.” In their entryway hangs a wooden sign with the word “hello” on it lined with small hooks. It easily looks like something from a home goods store, but was made by Mullen and her father. Same with the large painting of a cartoonish woman and a cat in their living nook, made by Mullen. She nabbed the giant frame for $5 at a Goodwill and needed something abnormally large to go in it, so she painted something herself. Outside of her bedroom is a beautiful windowpane mirror, made from an old
windowpane Mullen picked up from an antique store at home in New Jersey. Her grandfather painted it white, replaced the glass with mirrors, and lined the bottom with tiny hooks, instantly refurbishing an antique into a decorative mirror. “I also think I acquired the ‘junk’ gene,” she laughed. “I'll see something on the street and I'll be like, I have to have this. ‘One man’s trash,’ you know what they say.” A tall shelf Mullen found recently on the street sits in the mudroom, unused for now. She discovered it homeless in her neighborhood next to another shelf, and she and another Astoria resident
helped each other move the shelves to their respective apartments (“The people are so friendly here!”). There is a wooden ladder with the bottom rungs missing in their bathroom, making the perfect towel rack — also a street find. One of her favorite rescued pieces is a long nightstand of sorts on wheels. She painted the top white and placed it next to her bed. “Everyone on my street has good taste, I guess!” Mullen joked. “I just had a plain white nightstand and I wanted something different. Now there’s plenty of storage. I love it.”

Like her new nightstand, everything in her room has a unique backstory, and it’s constantly evolving. A self-proclaimed “Pinterest fiend,” Mullen is constantly looking for ways to revamp her space. Right now, it has a classic and fun vibe, full of memorabilia and trinkets gathered from work. Her bed is white, accented with colorful throw pillows. Her dresser is also white, as are her desk and chair on the opposite side of the room. “When I first moved in, it was super girly,” Mullen said of her room. “I gravitate a lot toward pink, which I try to reign in. I like pink, but I’ll put too much pink in my room and I’ll be like, ‘Ew, it’s so girly.’ Rachel says my room’s a lot more reflective of my style right now.” Also a plant-mom, Mullen has baby succulents and plants scattered throughout, and one strategically hangs from a pipe on her ceiling. Near the window hang two shelves Mullen put together. She had small planks of wood cut at Home Depot, drilled two holes on the ends, and suspended them with durable string tacked up on the wall, forming a triangle shape. If Mullen didn’t make it herself, chances are it’s from Target or CB2, and sometimes

Wayfair and Crate & Barrel. But, “If I could shop at one store for the rest of my life and outfit my whole place, it would be West Elm,” she said. “I’m really into midcentury modern. That is my ideal design style.” She also faithfully follows the design mogul Joanna Gaines and interior designer Emily Henderson. Mullen may not know what her room will look like in a year, a month, or even one week, but as for now, she’s loving her home in vibrant Astoria. “I love it here,” she said about the neighborhood. “It’s like coming home at the end of the day.” JUNE 2018 I BOROMAG.COM

ids and teens looking to pick up a new skill this summer are just a ferry ride away from doing just that at the Roosevelt Island Racquet Club, which hosts the Advantage All-City Junior Tennis Camp program. The program for children ages 6 to 17 runs for 12 weeks from June 11 to Aug. 31. And unlike many camps, the Advantage All-City Junior Tennis Camp allows kids to sign up by the week or even just for specific days: “The thing that makes us most unique is our flexibility,” said Steve O’Keefe, director of Advantage Day Camp. “Members can sign up for a weekly package or pick and choose days throughout the summer, so a lot of people like that.” At the camp, children can participate in three to four activities each day. These activities include field and gym sports, tennis, swimming and arts and crafts. What makes them different from your average day camp is that they mix in one enrichment activity every day, including chess, fencing or theater arts. Plus, campers have access to the great facilities at the racquet club, which has 12 air-conditioned HarTru tennis courts. “[W]e have great facilities, with lots of outdoor space for enrichment activities,” O’Keefe said. The Roosevelt Island Racquet Club is accessible by bus, subway (F train), tram and car. If you choose to drive, there is free on-site parking. For more information, visit advantagetennisclubs.com.

Learning for Life By JENNA BAGCAL @JENNA_BAGCAL
An Astoria-based nonprofit hopes to raise $10,000 by June 27 to support their tutoring program in the face of reduced government funding. On May 23, the Center for the Integration and Advancement of New Americans (CIANA) launched the "Learning for Life" fundraiser in support of their popular Elementary After School Tutoring program. According to their website, CIANA, located at 31-09 Newtown Ave., Suite 411, is utilized by recent immigrant children and their families with a "focus on newcomers from Middle East, North Africa, Latin America and South Asia." CIANA Program and Administration Manager Kylen Button stated that funding
for their tutoring program and others like it has been slashed at federal, state and local levels. As a result, the organization has turned to private donors to help fund the program, which they say is "a vital part of the children’s success in the New York City school system, and a part of their assimilation into American society while staying rooted in their cultural heritage." CIANA started in 2012 when its founder and CEO, Emira Habiby Browne, was approached by a parent whose child was failing kindergarten. “Emira was in total shock. How could a child be failing kindergarten? One of our interns at the time volunteered to tutor her a few times per week and over the course of time, saw drastic improvements,” Button said. Local parents heard about the child's newfound success and started reaching out to CIANA asking if their children could also be tutored. The program caters to children
in grades 1 to 5, who receive one-on-one homework help twice a week, according to a promotional video on the organization's website. Currently, the program is at capacity, and serves 20 children from every New York City borough, and there is a waitlist of children whose parents want them to receive tutoring. The nonprofit plans to use the money they raise to hire a program coordinator, offer more days for tutoring and accept more children into the program. In addition to the Elementary After School Tutoring program, CIANA runs a variety of programs to benefit "new Americans," including adult ESL classes, classes and workshops to help immigrants to gain citizenship and an after-school program for middle schoolers to participate in recreational activities. To learn more about CIANA or to donate to their fundraiser, visit the organization's website at cianainc.org. JUNE 2018 I BOROMAG.COM

usinesses in Astoria are celebrating the reopening of the 30th Avenue subway station with Restaurant Week. Restaurants, beauty salons, doctors offices and national banks will be participating in the event. The week will kick off on June 21 with food and cocktails in the lobby of the Sterling National Bank at 37-36 30th Ave., Astoria. Businesses on 30th Avenue will have their own tables with food or information about their businesses. There is a $10 entrance fee for the kickoff party. After the kickoff event, the Restaurant Week will run from Friday, June 22, to Sunday, July 1. “The train station has been closed for several months — several businesses have closed. There has been a decrease in business,” said Roseann McSorley, co-owner of Katch, a restaurant on Newtown Avenue, and a leader within the 30th Avenue Business Association. “Many of us, Katch as well, have seen a decrease in business and a decrease in staff.
