Dear western Queens,
BRADLEY HAWKS editor-in-chief
It is so important to celebrate the things we love every day of our lives. It astonishes me how quickly things can change, and suddenly a place that holds special memories throughout the years can seem to vanish overnight. The passing of Brick Café certainly caught many of us off guard. But with each door that closes, a new one opens. This month, we explore the flavors of the world that come together in our vibrant neighborhood. Tibetan cuisine has found a home at Dawa’s in Sunnyside, while the Pacific Rim has planted its roots on a rooftop on Steinway. The youth and electricity of our ever changing corner of the city will undoubtedly celebrate the genius of Flattopps Burgers and Barcade. Better yet, sample bites from every corner of the globe with the opening of the Astoria Night Market this weekend. When all is said and done, you can burn it all off at the new fitness center now up and running at the Iron Lion! If you have others stories you would recommend, send them my way to bhawks@ boromag.com. Have an incredible summer! Gratefu lly yours, Bradley Hawks

t first glance, Dawa’s looks like any other coffee house in any other quiet neighborhood of any other city. Men and women sit hunched over laptops sipping coffee, pausing occasionally to savor a forkful of something on a plate. A large, white-painted, wooden table in the front window holds miniature pots of freshly picked flowers, which are dwarfed by terra cotta pots brimming with home-fried potato chips. The menu on the website seems simple enough—pea risotto with farm-fresh petits pois, basil oil and wild greens. Brioche bread with organic rhubarb and strawberry compote. Steel-cut oatmeal with house-made granola and fruit. But the titles are merely words. And you might want to browse what is referred to as the ethnic menu for some of the most delectable selections. In Woodside, Dawa’s is not just serving up beautiful renditions of New American cuisine, but some re-imagined versions of nomadic Himalayan classics. JULY 2016 I BOROMAG.COM I 7

Nepal-born chef and co-owner Dawa Bhuti leaves the Tibetan food to her father, keeping the menus separate. I first came in to sample a beet pasta I had seen on their Instagram feed. “We replaced the beet pasta with the poached eggs and smoked salmon,” explained Dawa, her eyes lighting up. “It’s served on this incredible little cake made with brown rice and kale, and topped with a homemade salsa verde. My father just brought the arugula from a farm upstate ... Oh, and you have to try the chicken sandwich, too.” From the authentic side, blood sausage arrives in a fiery sauce. Shabaley’s

The cuisine is exceptional, and the service impeccable. The menu changes frequently based on availability and the season. It’s a brilliant brunch locale supplemented with a true taste of Tibet in the middle of Queens, all served in an inviting space that feels a lot like home. 51-18 Skillman Ave., Queens 718-899-8629 dawasnyc.com

The spectacular alignment of the sun with the city’s street grid will occur on July 12, and Queens residents will have a front seat view. The Hunters Point Parks Conservancy and Atlas Obscura will host LICHenge, a walking tour from Greenpoint to Long Island City followed by a party to celebrate the event, which occurs twice a year. Live music, drinks and food will be offered while attendees get a look at the astronomical phenomenon. Starting at St. Anthony’s Church at 862 Manhattan Ave. at 7 p.m., attendees will walk across the Pulaski Bridge into Long Island City’s Hunters Point Park. Every ticket holder will also become a member of the Hunters Point Parks Conservancy and get access to their calendar of events. Tickets for the event are $45 and can be purchased on the Atlas Obscura website.
Sac’s Place, a pizza shop and restaurant in Astoria, will bring its menu of homemade pasta and family recipes to a new location in Jackson Heights. Sac’s Place of Jackson Heights will open at 86-14 37th Ave., according to the restaurant’s newsletter, and will be open for delivery and takeout only. Decades-old Astoria pizza shop

Sac’s Place of Jackson Heights will open at 86-14 37th Ave., according to the restaurant’s newsletter, and will be open for delivery and takeout only. Domenico and Anthony Sacramone opened the original pizza shop in 1989 on the corner of Broadway and 29th Street and expanded to a full-service restaurant in 1998.
Now located at 25-41 Broadway, the brothers serve up their mother’s recipes and make handmade pastas and stuffed ravioli downstairs. The pizza offerings include Mama’s Old-Fashioned Pie, which consists of fresh mozzarella layered over sauce and topped with basil. Patrons can also choose between 23 toppings to add to their pies. Roasted pepper and smoked mozzarella ravioli, chicken Napoletana, and spinach fettucine are also included on the menu. They also recently added a
brunch menu with breakfast pizzas and classic items such as buttermilk pancakes and egg frittatas. The owners have not released opening day details and they were not available for comment. But according to the restaurant’s Facebook page, the group is working hard to open up the new place soon. “Join us on our journey to open the finest pizzeria in Jackson Heights, Queens — we’re working [overtime] to make this happen and we’re taking you along for the ride,” a Facebook post said. MALOCCLUSION AND PERIODONTAL DISEASE Malocclusion affects 74% of American adults. If you have malocclusion, it may affect your periodontal health, because it is difficult to remove plaque when teeth are not aligned. Periodontal disease can begin as hum redness or bleeding while brushing your teeth or using dental floss, and you may notice halitosis, or bad breath. If not treated, hum inflammation can become worse, leading to soft tissue damage, receding gums, the formation of pockets between teeth and hums, bone loss, and eventually tooth loss. THE PROGRESSION OF PERIODONTAL DISEASE When teeth are crowded, plaque with harmful bacteria can attach to the tooth surface down to the bottom of the pocket. Plaque can be difficult to remove from crowded areas because it is difficult to brush and floss here. Bacteria can cause gum tissue surrounding the tooth to degrade, and if not treated, result in bone loss. WEAR AND TRAUMA Poorly aligned teeth can also create unnatural stress and pressure on teeth and jaws. Teeth that are subject to excessive pressure can develop chipping and notches at the gum line called abfractions. Premature wear can lead to poor root support, loose teeth and eventually, tooth loss. STRAIGHT TEETH ARE HEALTHIER TEETH Straight, properly aligned teeth can help you avoid the negative effects of periodontal disease. HEALTHIER GUMS Properly aligned teeth are easier to brush and floss than crowded or crooked teeth. Properly positioned teeth can help gums “fit” more tightly around them, which may lead to better periodontal health. IMPROVED HYGIENE With good oral hygiene, the chances of having plaque retention, tooth decay, and periodontal disease can be reduced.

This area is equipped with two power racks, one platform and a designated deadlift area. At the other the end of the turf is strength area number 2. Exercise gives you the strength, flexibility, mobility and poise to own your life. Training can help you prove to yourself that you have unlimited potential. Team Pride is a series of large group classes in which the trainers at Iron Lion utilize circuits and/or kettlebell complexes to produce physically fit individuals. Kettlebell complexes are a series of fullbody exercises performed sequentially and with calculated rep schemes and rest intervals. Benefits of kettlebell complexes include fat loss, improved lean body mass, and conditioning. Youth training focuses on a host of physical skills known as general physical preparation, and assists with correcting muscular imbalances. Iron Lion coaches help youth athletes to dramatically improve their performance, health and strength. Strong athletes not only maximize performance, they minimize chance of injury.

Strength Camp is a group training program focused on building some serious strength. It is a friendly and competitive atmosphere that empowers members to make changes in body, attitude and life.
In addition, Iron Lion Performance is a Precision Nutrition and Kinstretch certified club. Training hard and gaining strength is only half the battle. In many cases, you cannot out-train a bad diet. ILP’s nutrition coaches can assist in creating a balanced diet through sustainable and reasonable behavioral changes, accountability, macronutrient planning, and providing the support system needed to be successful. The same goes for the implementation of the principles of Functional Range Conditioning and availability of Kinstretch classes. Appropriate mobility and healthy joints are necessary for strength training and these classes will ensure your body’s physical readiness for load. If you already eat and move well, these offerings can take you to another level.

storia has a brand new rooftop lounge where diners can savor delicious Asian fusion while gazing upon the city skyline. Located on Steinway between Broadway and 31st Avenue, Luna Asian Bistro features both indoor and outdoor dining illuminated with bright neon that accentuates the city sky. It is absolutely remarkable how elevating yourself one story above street level can instantaneously transport you to another time and space. Plated with meticulous execution, dishes arrive like edible artwork. Starters range from braised pork belly Ho Pang steamed buns to Japanese gyoza and shumai, though we recommend beginning with an order of the crispy wontons. These deepfried golden pouches are stuffed with lobster, basil, and cream cheese, and served with a playfully spicy thyme sauce. Tartar is available in three various formats, but who cam resist the best of all worlds combined? The Ocean Mix

tartar arrives with cucumber wheels stacked with king crab, salmon, ikura, onion, pepper, parsley, and tomato served with the chef's special sauce. Sashimi is colorfully re-imagined, as well. Garlic white tuna is quickly seared tataki-style, then dressed with French onion, tobiko, and yuzu sauce. Truffled salmon is adorned with black tobiko, chives, and spicy lemon zest. Yellowtail is livened with fresh jalapeno and soy yuzu sauce.
Yuzu is used throughout the menu to add an exotic element. Almost like a small grapefruit, yuzu is an aromatic Japanese citrus that blends the tang of a grapefruit with the sweetness of a mandarin orange. Sushi rolls morph into unique flavor explorations, as well. The Lady Gaga is a shrimp tempura and eel roll topped with spicy tuna and tobiko, wrapped in tissue-thin soy paper, and drizzled with coconut curry. Kitchen entrees lean on the more classic side, like teriyaki, tempura, and pad thai—each prepared with exquisite presentations. Grilled mango chicken is a standout with fresh mango, red onion, and a piquant mango sweet chili sauce. Traditional desserts and classic cocktails are available, as well. There is dining al fresco, and then there is dining on a rooftop. This summer is the perfect time to elevate your experience and give Luna Asian Bistro a try! 32-72 Steinway Astoria, NY 11103 (917) 832-7911 (917) 832-6272 www.lunaasianbistro.com

1
You have been open for [2.5] Years, whY do an article now? Well, this is a challenging business and a challenging neighborhood with a lot of great restaurants that bring their ‘A’ game. We bring something new to the table, a new concept of sorts, and it has taken us a little bit of time to fine tune things and get our confidence level up. It takes time to get the right team together and to make it feel as though we are running on all cylinders and can tread further with a little more swag. So, we felt the time was right to bring our story to the masses.
2
how has astoria treated You? Honestly, we looked at other locations in Park Slope, Williamsburg, Manhattan, etc. Astoria felt right. It was scary of course once we got the keys and a full build out was looming. But, Astoria is a tight community where the residents are in tune and in the know as to whats going on around them and we felt that we were gonna be given a chance here. It was up to us to bring a great product, great service, with an exceptional atmosphere to have our guests coming back. Thankfully we have a great following and we appreciate every single guest that walks through our door.
3
what is the biggest misconception people have about Your restaurant? Um, the word ‘Hot-Dogs’. We are not a ‘Hot-Dog Joint’! We have something called ‘Signature Dogs’ that are gourmet
Vlad Stern, GM/Co-Founder
sausages, grilled to order, and are topped with unique and delicious house-made toppings. On top of that we have superior Mac n’ Cheese, killer Chicken Wings, outstanding Burgers, sexy Signature Cocktails, and a cool ‘Build Your Own Brunch’ concept that we are super happy with. There’s also a great outdoor dining area that was a huge selling point as far as solidifying our lease.
4
rumor has it You have no prior restaurant experience, what have You learned? what are You most proud of? Yes, ‘tis is true. My Father, who is a co-founder of NYDH, and I had zero restaurant experience. We frequented many but never worked or operated one. But, believing in the concept and the brand keeps you going. Meeting, working, and surrounding yourself with extremely talented, loyal, and hard-working people who become attached to the concept and the brand is what I’m proud of. Being here right now having this interview about something that never existed before and still keeps going makes me extremely proud. Oh, and I have to tip my hat to the Food Network!
5
who/what inspired You take on this project? There was never a plan for this project. It all kind of fell into our laps and we went with it. As mentioned above, we
believe in it for some crazy reason and everyone involved thus far believes in it also so it’s hard to just kind of stop it. But, once we got going I looked back on people such as Michael Jordan, Lars Ulrich from Metallica, just for their drive, focus, and dedication. They were a huge part of my teenage years. Still are actually. I read Phil Jackson’s book ‘Eleven Rings’ before opening to get an idea on how to put a team of people together with different personalities, egos, etc., on one page with one goal. Also, I read Joe Bastianich’s book ‘The Restaurant Man’ to get an idea of what we are getting ourselves into. Currently I’m inspired by our guests. It never gets old to hear rave reviews and have guests keep coming back. And also, which is very important, listening to your guests if they feel something is not right. Your ego has to be put aside and adjustments need to be made to help the business grow.
6
this might be a tough one but what are Your favorite items on the menu? Hm, currently, the tail end of June, and I’ll pick one from each category, I would say the ‘MAC Attack’ Fritters, ‘Dragon’ Wings, ‘Psycho’ Mac n’ Cheese, the ‘Coney Island’ Signature Dog, the ‘Cowboy’ Burger, and the ‘Cheesecake Cakes’ are definitely worth checking out!
7
what is the end goal? whats the ultimate goal with this project? The first thing we did was trademark the name and the concept. We felt as though this deserves more than just one location so [5] locations worldwide was always my dream and vision. But, again, its a challenging business and we can only control what we can control and that is work hard, stay focused, stay consistent, and I feel that the right things will fall into place where need be. he departure of Brick Café came as a devastating shock to many. But when one door closes, another one opens. First, the northern portion of Brick Café transitioned into Halsey’s Tavern, and then the remaining portion of the space recently morphed into Mom’s Kitchen and Bar. Now they’re two distinctly separate locations, still connected at the kitchen, and we figured it was time to stop by and check them out. Presently, Mom’s is debuting with a soft opening daily at 5 p.m. with regular hours coming soon. With a name like Mom’s, you know you can expect some down home-style comfort cuisine. And what could be more comforting than an all-day brunch? Mac ‘n’ cheese pancakes with Cholula honey, jumbo shrimp with cheesy grits, and bacon-laced waffles with fried chicken take the spotlight alongside a killer Tex Benedict with braised brisket, Texas toast, hollandaise and pickled jalapeños. Disco fries are upgraded to heavy metal with cheese curds and peppercorn gravy, but we recommend you sample those cheese curds all on their own—beer-battered and fried with a ramekin of spicy pepper jam. In addition, who doesn’t want to grab a handful of Cracker Jack bacon? Sometimes less is more, and you can’t go wrong with the Southern-style chicken filet with garlic aioli and pickle slaw on a toasted brioche served with plump fries. Or you can build your own breakfast, complete with sweet potato home fries. Perhaps you will simply want to stop by for a Bigmouth Shake, with throwback names reminiscent of the ‘80s. he Astoria Flea and Food was a tremendous success, bringing together vendors and patrons in the spacious back lot of the iconic Kaufman Astoria Studios— the only back lot in New York City. This month, the team behind the LIC Flea will reunite once again to return to Astoria its first night market—all in the same space that has played home to the filming of such blockbuster hits as Orange is the New Black, Nurse Jackie, and Sesame Street. For three Saturdays in July (9th, 16th, and 23rd) the city will descend upon Astoria from 7 p.m. to midnight to wander nearly 80 stands to sample a diverse array of international cuisine and shop through stalls of vintage clothing, works of local artists, children’s products, furniture, jewelry, and gifts of every size and shape. In addition, a bar will serve wine and beer from local Queens breweries. “I’m thrilled to partner with Kaufman Astoria Studios and open their outdoor movie lot to the general public. It will be a fun and family-friendly destination to enjoy the remaining evenings of summer,” said Joshua Schneps, Co-Publisher of QNS and president of LIC Flea & Food. “Our first-class flea vendors offer the opportunity to discover unique items to buy and our food vendors serve up delicious eats you can’t find anywhere else.” Visitors will be able to enter the lot from 36th Street either from 34th Avenue or through the grand entrance on 35th Avenue featuring a 40-foot-high steel gate, designed by David Rockwell and the Rockwell Group. Fans of the LIC Flea & Food will recognize many of their weekend favorites located at 5-25 46th Avenue, along with several newcomers. For the feature story in this issue, BORO spent some quality time with each of the vendors at the LIC Flea to show readers a glimpse of the many of the flavors and merchandise. Vendors who are interested in selling at the market can visit www.LICFlea.com or email info@licflea.com to apply. For updates visit Facebook.com/LICFlea or follow @LICFlea on Twitter and Instagram.

“F
or me, New York cuisine has always been Italian-American, Chinese takeout and fast food burgers,” Donnie D’Alessio says. If the crowd outside of his freshman restaurant, Queens Comfort, is any indication, the city would probably agree with the driven, imaginative owner. But where Queens Comfort scores big as boisterous, BYOB brunch spot, D’Alessio had his eyes what would appear to be a natural next step. D’Alessio’s sophomore project, Flattopps, reunites the former film producer with his whimsically talented and miraculously capable culinary executioner, Hernan Heras. But where Queens Comfort reigns king of decadent gourmet burgers, eccentric mac ‘n’ cheese combos and comfort platters of Southern favorites with significant upgrades all served in a room that

feels like a childhood toy attic, Flattopps is geared toward the big kids. “You have to try one of their slushes,” exclaimed a friend who had already been. “Get a slush,” whispered the woman seated next to my table as soon as I started perusing the menu. “Hey, glad to see you made it to Flattopps … here’s a menu, and I would start with a slush,” my server said, welcoming me. So I started with a Purple Urkel—an icy blend of natural grapes and vodka, topped with a cloud of marshmallow brulee and actual frozen grapes, complete with a marshmallow smiley face painted inside the glass. The neon sign over the bar reflects off the tabletop murals of vintage photos and images of staff and friends. modern takes on ‘50s standards crooning from the jukebox. Video games flicker toward the back hallway as patrons gather around the main bar. Cocktails, beer cans and wine bottles (and cans) get a chance to shine, where the liquor license permits the team to get equally playful with libations. If you want to be taken back to college spring break quickly, try the King Coco slush— it’s like a grown-up pina colada that employs scotch rather than rum. pleasing drinkability, these bad boys will knock you on your butt if taken for granted. TIP: A chilled slushy glass from a skillful mixologist should never be interpreted as a weak sip. And that’s the beauty of Flattopps. Part stoner bar, part diner, part arcade, part hip-hop tribute, the menu lends itself to an evening of perfect drinks with feel-good music, and a menu tailored to shareable nibbles and sensibly sized burgers. Chef Hernan has hit these dishes out of the park. A potato tostada is blanketed with Ecuadorian hot sauce, bacon, crema and marinated shrimp. Ghetto Blasters are actually miniature country fried chicken patties glistening with spicy pepperoni, pesto, mozzarella and pink sauce. Short rib sliders sing of sweet apricot and bok choy. Tater tots are upgraded to bite-size croquettes of Yukon gold spuds, house-made pastrami, cornichons, Gruyere and spicy Chinese mustard— collectively known as Pastrami Bombs. Drool-inducing deep-fried orbs of sweet green plantain and seasoned beef take the moniker ‘Mofongo Bawlz.’ Beef fried rice is even dipped The Schnook in the fryer. Thinner flattop grilled beef patties take the main stage, with all the outrageous toppings for which this team has become so affectionately beloved. The Schnook is crowned with a fried mozzarella and pepperoni patty, then blanketed with pink sauce. The Flying Guillotine marries the patty with the stuffing of a roasted duck and shrimp eggroll topped 52 I BOROMAG.COM I JULY 2016

with a l’orange sauce. Of course there’s even a nod to the notorious rapper, Gucci Mane—his burger pimped out with Cap’n Crunch-crusted bacon and Gruyere on a raspberry jam-slathered piece of brioche French toast. Poultry and Brussels sprouts even get their turn with a mix of chicken and veggie burgers. There’s also a veg-
etarian lo mein burger, as well as two vegan-friendly options. After several years across the highway at Queens Comfort, it appears the team has mastered the game of delivering vibrant options that will please everyone. Slap on some curly fries or crinkle cuts to satiate those extra cravings, then grab a side of a l’orange for dunking.

While the team is ironing out the menu and they remain in soft opening mode, this is still the best time to swing by and check them out. Cocktails and sandwiches rarely taste like this, and small plates that lend themselves to drunken noshing are rarely
this superb. It’s an all-around relaxed, feel-good vibe that we suspect is going to catch on. Soon, Kyclades may not be the only Ditmars restaurant with patrons huddled outside waiting for a coveted table. 33-06 Ditmars Blvd., Astoria www.flattopps.com

COMMUNITY Photo courtesy of Instagram/Sac’s Place of Jackson Heights
Group proposes new plan to transform LIC’s abandoned rail line
E
arlier last year, the city announced its goal to transform a stretch of abandoned rail line in Long Island City, and one proposal aims to turn the line into “a unique ecological and cultural space.” Long Island City-based BanG Studio and Brooklyn Grange call their plan the “Wild Line.” The groups are proposing to create a habitat where animals, humans, birds, insects and microorganisms can coexist on a 4.3-acre parcel of land that stretches from 49th to Skillman avenues. The line was decommissioned by the MTA in March 2015. The Wild Line will create a gradient of wilderness from the north end to the south end of the rail line, Curbed first reported. The south end, reserved for native plant, animal and insect species, will be off-limits to the public and only be used for research and education. “What’s striking is that even though it’s not so long ago that it was being used, the way nature sort of starts to take over… it seemed like a really sort of suitable location to kind of reintroduce the sort of plants that are native, which create habitat for animals that are native, which have positive environmental effects,” said Henry Grosman, co-founder of BanG Studio. According to the plan, the Wild Line will consider every aspect of biological and ecological processes to turn the once-industrial site into a natural environment.
Native plants including perennials, red maple, witchazel and winterberry trees will be installed and will help to conserve water since the plants are resistant to drought patterns and sudden precipitation surges that are common in New York. The groups will also engage visitors by creating opportunities for composting. Bins, tumblers, wooden boxes and Bokashi Buckets, a system of composting that ferments kitchen scraps, will be placed along the route to ensure healthy soil and eliminate the need for chemicals, according to the plan. Smiling Hogshead Ranch, an urban garden started in 2011 by community members, will remain on the site. Located at 25-30 Skillman Ave., the nonprofit provides tours for students, live productions, performance art, yoga, flow arts and more. The nonprofit’s organizers are also working with community groups to submit a proposal to the MTA. Bug hotels are also part of the plan and will serve as homes for wild bees, spiders and lady bugs. The groups hope to create a symbiotic relationship with insects and plants. Milkweeds and nectar plants will act as sustenance for monarch butterflies and other insect species.
Loggerhead shrikes, eld sparrows, meadowlarks and other species of birds can also receive sustenance from perennials and wildflowers, according to the plan. Birdhouses and bat condos would be constructed to encourage species to use the Wild Line as a home. Bat condos would attract little brown bats that eat mosquitoes and other garden bugs, eliminating the need for harmful pesticides. The public would have access to the Wild Line from a ramp and stairs on 51st Street, 49th Avenue and through the Smiling Hogshead Ranch.
