CONTENTS When my roommate and I were looking for our first New York City apartment three years ago, we visited a slew of disappointing neighborhoods: unsafe, unclean, too far from Manhattan, nothing in the way of cafes and restaurants ... the list went on. But then we got off the N/Q in Astoria. We walked down 30th Avenue and saw the thriving bars and restaurants, fresh produce market, happy community and locally owned bakeries. And we said, “We want to live here.” I’ve been living in Astoria ever since, and I’ve grown to really feel like I’m part of the western KATRINA MEDOFF Queens community. I’ve performed in a short editor-in-chief play at the Secret Theatre, gone to readings at the Astoria Bookshop, and celebrated the Fourth of July on Astoria Park’s great lawn. I’ve made amazing friends in this neighborhood, and I recognize local business owners when we walk past each other on the street. The western Queens community is really something special. As the new editorin-chief of BORO, I want to celebrate the people and organizations that give Astoria, Long Island City and Sunnyside their character and help them thrive. In this issue, you can get inspired by the looks of Astoria fashionistas (page 6) and a local resident with a penchant for DIY interior design (page 50). You can read about one of my neighbors, Frank Zagottis, whose Backyard Film Fest is celebrating its 10th year (page 17), as well as other outdoor movies to enjoy this month (page 21). And we hope our frozen treats roundup (page 41) and western Queens summer bucket list (page 10) will help you make the most of the remaining weeks of summer. Got any tips, news or stories you’d like to share with BORO? Send them to kmedoff@qns.com. I’m looking forward to hearing from you. Wishing you all a wonderful end of summer, Katrina Medoff

Astoria fashionistas had one thing on their minds this month: prints. Be it floral skirts, lemon-print shirts or vintage zigzags, the outfits were popping with color and fun. Check out these stylish Astorians enjoying the summer weather and looking fabulous as they did it. If you have a fashion statement to make, let the streets be your runway, my darling Queens residents. Maybe you’ll end up on the pages of BORO next month!

Zagottis editing the opening reel

t’s a warm night in late June, and a small crowd is gathering in Astoria resident Frank Zagottis’ triangular backyard off Newtown Road. Chairs are lined up in rows facing a fabric screen that hangs from the apartment’s back porch, and Tiki torches twinkle around the property. A chandelier suspended in the air by wires glows over the yard. The host greets old friends and strangers as they arrive, inviting them to sit in “first class, business or coach” (the different areas of seating in the backyard, including adirondack chairs for “first class” and white plastic ones in “coach”). Guests make trips to a snack table around the side of the building, scooping up popcorn for themselves or adding a treat to share. It’s the premiere screening of The Newtown Road Backyard Film Festival’s 2016 season—which happens to be the 10th anniversary season for the festival—and the film for the night is the 1981 Academy Award winner for Best Picture, “Ordinary People.” As the sky darkens, Zagottis, 53, turns on a projector balanced on an old green ladder. The 10-minute pre-show countdown that Zagottis made on Final Cut Pro adds a drive-in movie vibe. He stands in front of the screen and welcomes everyone to the screening.
Forty-two people squeezed into Zagottis’ backyard for a screening of “The Godfather.” It was a record-breaking crowd. “This is the way movies were meant to be seen,” he tells the small crowd, “in a communal setting, in the correct aspect ratio, and without a pause button.” Years ago, one of the regulars at this homegrown movie festival created a “popcorn fund” from a recycled popcorn jar to help Zagottis pay for items like popcorn, ice and cups, and attendees are invited to donate a little something to the fund to help pay for these communal goods. Otherwise, it’s completely free to attend the movie; this is something Zagottis does for his community, without asking anything in return.
FESTIVAL ORIGINS It all started when Zagottis went back to school to study film. “I came back with a finished short film and one of my tenants had a projector, so I dropped a king-sized bed sheet, which was very small, over my porch so we could watch it,” he said. When he told his dad, an Italian immigrant who used to be a tailor, that they watched the film on such a small screen, Zagottis’ father sewed together two bed sheets to make a larger screen. Zagottis thought, “Let’s show

more films and call it a film festival.” He chose his first film, “Cinema Paradiso,” about a small Italian village brought together by a movie theater, because “it epitomized what I felt films could do for communities and for people,” Zagottis said. “I was trying to find a way to bring folks together and I thought that having a movie in the backyard could do that,” said Zagottis, who has lived on Newtown Road for 30 years. During that showing of “Cinema Paradiso,” a police car drove past the backyard, backed up, and then rolled down the window. The police asked Zagottis what he was doing, and Zagottis said that he was showing a movie for anyone in the community who wanted to come. “If you have any problems, give us a call and we’ll take care of it,” one of the officers told Zagottis. Years later, in 2014, there was a series of hate crimes in which things were thrown at Zagottis’ home, which has a gay pride flag on display. Zagottis got to know the 114th Precinct as they worked with him to solve the issue. That September, while Zagottis was showing “Chicago,” a squad car pulled up by the backyard, and Zagottis went over to ask if everything was okay, thinking
there might be news about the incidents. But there wasn’t any problem; instead, the police officers told him that they were on their break and wanted to watch the movie for a while.
his film festival more official: His friend who has an audio recording studio did the voiceover for the opening curtain sequence. Additionally, Zagottis hangs up a movie poster during each screening; he either orders a poster or prints it out on several sheets of paper that he pieces together. He also created a Facebook group in 2008. At the time, it had 20 members; it now has 635 members … and counting. “And that’s how it began to grow,” Zagottis said. “People began joining the group, and I began to get into it. I began to say, ‘Wow, I got a film festival going on—this is cool! I can actually come up with themes and stuff.’” This year’s theme is Ordinary People in Extraordinary Circumstances. Zagottis always tries to have a mixture of contemporary and classic films that “haven’t had their due diligence projected on a big screen in a long time,” he said. “For example, so many people have seen ‘Gone with the Wind’ over the years on TV, but how many people have had a chance to see it on the big screen? So that was one of the films I showed a couple of years ago.” The most popular film ever? “The Godfather.” Thirty-five people can fit comfortably in Zagottis’ yard, and for this screening, there were 42 audience mem-
MOVIE MAGIC Since the film festival’s first year, Zagottis has been making upgrades. He grew tired of watching movies with a stitch going down people’s faces, so he ordered a large piece of fabric, and his father, now age 84, created a 12-by-9foot movie screen. (During the opening reel, you’ll see a short film documenting his father sewing the screen with his old sewing machine.) Before every showing, Zagottis irons the screen on an old-fashioned ironing board, a process that takes about an hour. Zagottis adds little touches to make

bers in the yard as well as three people sitting on the curb. When his dear friend Isabel Ruggero passed away in 2014 after a five-year battle with cancer, Zagottis dubbed his “movie theater” Cinema Isabel. For the entire 2014 season, Zagottis reserved the “VIP section”—the couch in the back where Ruggero used to sit—in her honor. At the end of that 2014 season, Zagottis’ projector gave way. “Somebody came up to me after the movie and said, ‘Let us chip in.’ I said, ‘I can’t do that,’ but he said to do a GoFundMe [crowdfunding campaign],” Zagottis said. The response was overwhelming: in 12 weeks, Zagottis had raised $1,200 for the projector, HD Blu-ray player, cables and more. “People were donating 50 bucks, 100 bucks, without even thinking,” Zagottis said. “Someone even apologized because they could only afford $20. I said, ‘Are you kidding me? You’re apologizing?’ It said something to me. I said, maybe there’s something to this that I’m not getting; to me it’s just showing movies,” he said, but to people who come, it’s something more. “There are times when I start to get tired and say, you know, I think we’re done. And then there are times when I think, why? Just do it. You get a lot out of it. People enjoy it. Especially this year— more new people have come this season to each film than ever before.” Sometimes it takes a new face to remind Zagottis why he started the festival in the first place. “When a new person shows up and they go, ‘Holy crap, I can’t believe that you do this, this is amazing, this is awesome,’ I think it’s a wake-up call. It reminds you that it may be 10 years for you, but it’s brand new for someone else, and they go, ‘This is really awesome,’ and
Zagottis snaps a group shot after every movie.
then you go, ‘Oh yeah, I forgot.’ “So I keep doing it. And I’ll keep doing it until I can’t do it anymore, or until something breaks down and I don’t have what I need. As long as I keep living here and I have a backyard.” When Zagottis considered holding his film festival in a different location, one of his friends said, “You can’t take it out of your backyard, because that’s part of what makes it cool. You’ve got a chandelier hanging in your backyard, Frank.
How off the wall is that?” One year Zagottis had a sketch to redesign where to hang his projector, and someone said, “You’re getting rid of the ladder? You can’t get rid of the ladder. It’s rickety, and it’s cool because it’s part of the charm, because here you are with this ladder showing these great movies in your backyard. It just seems more homey.” So Zagottis kept the ladder. It looks like some things will never change. The rest of the season includes “Children of a Lesser God” on Aug. 20, “The In-Laws” on Aug. 27, “Heaven Can Wait” on Sept. 10, “Arthur” on Sept. 17, and “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” on Oct. 1. All dates are subject to change due to weather. Join The Newtown Road Backyard Film Festival Facebook group, then send a direct message to Zagottis or check your “other” folder for a message from him, because all new members must contact Zagottis before being added to the group. Make sure to RSVP for the screenings you want to go to, because seating is limited.

Film Frenzy
BY KATRINA MEDOFF @KatrinaMedoff @katya_m22
There are plenty of opportunities to watch films under the stars without even leaving western Queens. You’ve already read about Frank Zagottis’ homemade film festival (page 17), and here are four more summer film series to check out. They all have their own unique characters and show different types of movies, so you might just want to try them all. Plus, since they’re all free, there’s no excuse to stay home and watch Netflix instead. Pack your popcorn, bug spray and something to sit on, then head out and enjoy the show!

If you’re not into the mainstream, family-friendly fare shown at Astoria Park, the international films shown each Wednesday at Socrates Sculpture Park in partnership with Rooftop Films might be more up your alley. It’s what you’d expect from this off-beat (but well-loved) neighborhood park, home not only to its ever-changing sculpture exhibitions but also to a whole host of festivals, educational activities and exercise programs. You probably haven’t heard of any of the titles shown here, because the films hail from countries around the world. Arrive early, because pre-screening cultural performances start at 7 p.m. Coming up later this month: “Suzhou River” (China) on Aug. 10, “Aguirre, the Wrath of God” (Germany/Peru) on Aug. 17, and “Embrace of the Serpent” (Colombia) on Aug. 24.

The outdoor movies shown on the great lawn at Astoria Park have been a summer staple for years. You’re in for a great view with the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge to your left, the Hell Gate Bridge to your right, and the East River and Manhattan skyline sparkling behind the movie screen. The slope of the lawn makes it easy to see over the heads of moviegoers seated in front of you. Still, these events are usually packed, so arrive early if you want to sit close to the screen. The last two films of the summer are ‘80s favorite “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” (Aug. 15) and the ‘70s classic “Jaws” (Aug. 22), both at 8:30 p.m.

Definitely bring something comfy to sit on for this film series, because the turf field you’ll throw your blanket down on starts to feel hard and uncomfortable very quickly. But it’s worth it; the view of the Manhattan skyline from Hunter's Point South Park is unparalleled. Stake out a spot on the turf, then watch the sun set on the Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, World Trade Center and more as you wait for your movie to start. Short films from the Queens World Film Festival act as amusebouches before each of the features. “August Rush,” fittingly, plays this month (Thursday, Aug. 11, at 8:30 p.m.), followed by “Zootopia” at 8 p.m. on Aug. 25 and “Ghost” at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 15.

Small-town charm abounds in the parking lot of this Roman Catholic church, where box office hits are shown on Friday nights through the last Friday in August. Bring some cash so you can stock up on popcorn, hamburgers, candy and more being sold on folding tables before the movie starts as well as during intermission (that’s right, the movie is paused halfway through—sometimes mid-sentence—to give the audience a bathroom and snack break). Then pull up one of the folding chairs stacked up behind the church and settle in for family favorites like “Cinderella,” shown earlier this summer. Just know that you might be the only outsider in this close community of churchgoers (but you’ll certainly be welcomed). The schedule hasn’t been finalized, but if you’re strolling down 30th Avenue, you can see signs hanging on the fence in front of the church that will tell you what’s showing next. he dog days of summer are upon us, and many Queens residents are taking the opportunity to surf the crashing waves of our local beaches. But if time or transportation restrictions are preventing you from hanging 10—or if getting out on the ocean seems intimidating—perhaps you’d prefer to try a new twist on this summer favorite, all while bringing a bit of the outdoors in! Local Pilates studio TONE is offering western Queens residents the chance to get their heart rates up and strengthen their cores, all while on top of a surfboard. A surfboard? Yes, you heard that correctly. TONE owner Jessica Hope started offering Surf at TONE, an exciting spin on Pilates, after looking for a way to give her clients more variety in class offerings and to add cardio work.
Surf’s Up
at TONE “I really hate things like the treadmills,” Hope said, comparing working out on them to being “like a hamster in a ball.” When she discovered exercise equipment that would allow her clients to balance on a surfboard, it struck her as a good fit for TONE since she could incorporate cardio with the principles of Pilates: centering, control, concentration, precision, breathing and flowing movement. “I was looking for something to keep people motivated and excited and find something different to do with their exercise program,” Hope said. “The great 32 I BOROMAG.COM I AUGUST 2016
thing about exercising on the surfboard is that it really all comes from the core.” To “surf,” people have to root themselves into the board, activating the anterolateral abdominal wall and muscles of the lower back, as well as the hip flexors, hip extensors and hip rotators. The distinctive side-to-side motion of the board on its base simulates the feeling of being on the water, constantly testing the rider’s muscles from head to toe. And without the salty hair or reef rash! “By using muscles to help you balance and stabilize yourself while on the
surfboard and combining cardiovascular circuits, this workout will challenge you to use your core to its utmost,” Hope said. “This crazy, fun class has it all.” If you’re ready to catch a wave without actually, you know, catching a wave, you can take the class on Sundays at 12:30 p.m. A drop-in class costs $20. If you want to try some of the other classes at TONE, the Pilates studio offers an introductory special where you can take any three mat classes for $30. (Surf classes are not included in this special.) For more information, visit toneny.com. SPEAKEASY STAPLE BY ANGELA MATUA @AngelaMatua The craft cocktail scene in Astoria will soon have a new addition when The Last Word opens on Aug. 16. The speakeasy-style cocktail lounge, located at 31-30 Ditmars Blvd., will be headed by Astoria resident Tommy Demaras, who also owns Maiella in Long Island City. Demaras has partnered with bartender Padraig O’Brien, who has worked at The Raines Law Room and Park Hyatt New York, to offer classics and signature creations like the Rabble Rouser with rhum agricole, muddle raspberries, dolin blanc, rhubarb water, fresh lemon and sparkling water. O’Brien said it has taken the group approximately one year 34 I BOROMAG.COM I AUGUST 2016
to open the lounge but the concept is much older. “The concept itself was 10 years in the making,” O’Brien said. “‘The Last Word’ is named after the gin-based prohibition-era cocktail — the cocktail that made me fall in love with the craft, and ignited this passion for bartending.” Demaras, an Astoria native, had a lot of say in the design of the lounge and wanted to honor the Square Hardware store, which was a staple in the community for more than 50 years, and recently shut down. The owners have replicated the hardware store’s foyer and blocky, black-and-white storefront sign. “There will definitely be a few people that come by thinking it’s really a hardware store, but I think they’ll be happy once they realize we’re mixing up some great drinks inside,” O’Brien said.

Offerings will include creations such as the Mumbai Daiquiri with white rum, Batavia-arrack curry syrup, lime and rose water and bar snacks such as Burrata Truffle Balls, housemade jerky, local charcuterie, pickles and cheeses. Drink prices will range from $13 to $16. O’Brien said the menu will change four to six times a year to incorporate seasonal, local ingredients. A number of hot cocktails will also be included. The 2,000-square-foot, 60-seat venue will be decorated with plush seating, decorative light fixtures, vintage tin ceilings and a mix of antique and custommade furniture. A 16-foot marble and oak bar will act as a centerpiece. “At The Last Word, we wanted to create a space where people can come in and enjoy a high-quality, craft cocktail,” O’Brien said. “It doesn’t matter who you are, or what you’re doing — if you’re alone, on a date, with friends or family — this is the place to sit back and relax with a great drink in hand.” The Last Word will be open Sunday through Thursday from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. and Friday and Saturday from 5 p.m. to 3 a.m.

Campers gather for a writing exercise at Astoria Bier and Cheese.

If
you went to Astoria Bier and Cheese last month, you just might have seen a group of writers sipping on flights of beer and jotting down notes. But they weren’t reviewing the beverages; they were coming up with characters inspired by the various flavors of their drinks. The gathering was one of the weekly meetings of Writing Camp for Adults, a group that helps writers stay motivated over the summer, connect with other writers, and simply have fun. The camp is helmed by Astoria resident Tracy Sayre, who founded the community Writers Work three years ago to help writers develop their craft, career and community. “As a writer, I was feeling very lost and lonely in New York City, and I realized that I would like help meeting other writers and help developing a professional network and help developing my own writing, and I thought if I needed this, then other writers might need it as well,” Sayre said. The first events she offered were conferences, and she soon added writing retreats and public readings to her roster. She also teaches writing

classes at the New York Public Library. This summer, she wanted to try out a new program: a “camp” that would bring writers together for 10 events over the course of the season ranging from “Show Up and Write” meetings in which participants sit together at a cafe and—you guessed it—write, to a literary tour of Greenwich Village. One afternoon, the group gathered over a potluck picnic in Prospect Park and read some of their work aloud; the next week, they huddled over notebooks and laptops in Manhattan’s Housing Works cafe, where one camper finished
the first draft of her novel. “One of my favorite parts of camp is getting people to parts of the city they wouldn’t normally go to,” Sayre said. Each week, Sayre sends members an email with plans for that week’s meetup, as well as writing exercises or motivation and suggested events to do in the neighborhood after the event. When campers met at Astoria Bier and Cheese, she pointed them toward Break Bar, the Museum of the Moving Image and Socrates Sculpture Garden so that they could continue to explore western Queens if they chose to after the meeting.
The “campers” are around ages 24 to 40, including some people who had been to Writers Work conferences and others who were new to the community. There’s a lawyer, an editor, a bartender, actors, a photographer, a teacher. They all had plenty of ideas for their writing but were lacking “structure, time, motivation and accountability,” Sayre said. At camp, they’re writing screenplays, novels, young adult fiction or memoirs. Sayre, a screenwriter who just produced her first short film “Lily + Mara,” is using her time at Writing Camp for Adults to complete a first draft of a full AUGUST 2016 I BOROMAG.COM I 39

Creating accountability over the summer was one of Sayre’s main reasons for starting the camp, since she’s noticed that writing groups tend to fall apart during the summer because of vacations and hectic schedules. Participants agree that they needed this camp to keep up a creative routine. “I think it’s easy to let the summer go by and not get anything done,” Conrad said. “So when Tracy said that she was thinking about a writing camp, I was like, ‘Yes, please.’” The camp was a “trial run” for a program structured around weekly events, Sayre said, and people’s excitement about it inspired her to develop it further. 40 I BOROMAG.COM I AUGUST 2016

“Once I was actually doing [the Writing Camp for Adults], I really fell in love with this program,” Sayre said. “Having a weekly creative event to look forward to was really nice for me.” She is now planning a similar program that starts in September based on the idea of the fall semester, capturing the “back-to-school” feeling that “this is the year everything’s going to change,” Sayre said. She wants participants to be motivated by thoughts like “This is the year I finally finish my novel,” or “This is the year I finish a first draft.” The fall program will include events like apple picking and a literary tour of haunted spots in New York City at Halloween time. Sayre wants people to not only get some writing done but also just get out, experience new things and “fill your well” as an artist. “Most importantly,” she said, “I want people to leave my writing events with a new friend.” Anyone interested in the fall semester program can sign up for the Writers Work newsletter on writerswork.org or like the Writers Work Facebook page for updates. Wish you could have been at the beer writing class? Sign up for Sayre’s Aug. 27 beer writing class at Q.E.D. Astoria, 2716 23rd Ave. It takes place from 1 to 3 p.m., and the $40 ticket includes beer. Writers Work feature screenplay called “Rooted,” a conference dark drama. Josh Conrad, a camper and Writers Work conference veteran, appreciates that Sayre is along for the journey like everyone else. “I enjoyed the community [at the conferences] and that Tracy was so positive and so much of a go-getter, and not just like, ‘Here, I planned this event, enjoy,’” Conrad said. “She’s a very active participant and always encouraging everybody to meet each other and to find new ways of approaching writing and building a community.” The community continues online; everybody who’s been involved with a Writers Work program has access to a private Facebook group where they can ask each other questions, let people know what they’re working on and share motivation. The Writing Camp for Adults has its own private Facebook group, where campers can hold themselves and each other accountable between meetings. Toward the beginning of the summer, one assignment was for campers to choose a daily goal (like writing for 30 minutes before work or revising two pages of a screenplay) and to post “Did it” when they accomplished that goal each day.

ny time of year is a good time for ice cream, but in summer, it just feels more right. Eating a frozen treat in autumn simply can’t compare to scooping some gelato out of a paper cup on a breezy summer afternoon. As we wind down these final summer weekends, we realized we were
running out of time to hit all the spots on our sweets bucket list. What? You don’t have a sweets bucket list? Well, we won’t mind if you copy ours. Make sure you hit each of these local ice cream and gelato stops in Astoria and LIC before your carriage turns back into a pumpkin spiced latte come September. AUGUST 2016 I BOROMAG.COM I 41

27-17 24th Ave., Astoria While you’re squeezing in a few more afternoons of day drinking at the Bohemian Beer Garden this August, make sure to swing by Sweet Janes just a block up 24th Avenue for a treat sure to please anyone of any dietary persuasion: the FudgeStickle. Nut-free, non-dairy, non-GMO, gluten-free and without a drop of corn syrup in sight, the FudgeStickle is a throwback to owner Jane McGill’s childhood summers full of icy, fudgy deliciousness. Grab a stick of guilt-free goodness (they’re only 141 calories!) in fudge, mint, chocolate or chocolate stout. Try some of their non-dairy vegan ice creams, like the coconut-based blueberry lavender, almond-based carrot cake or cashew-based peanut butter chocolate swirl. The sorbets come in unique flavors like raspberry red wine and pear ginger riesling. If you’ve just got to have that lactose, dig into traditional ice cream in untraditional flavors like rosewater cardamom or salted caramel pretzel.

Aside from its mind-blowing redeyes and ultimate chill-vibe interior, Astoria Coffee on 30th Street also scoops a pretty chill game. Grab an ice cream sandwich by Lower East Side’s very own Melt, made out of freshly baked cookies. If you’re in the mood for a well-caffeinated drink with just a hint of sweetness, try an affogato using local vanilla ice cream from Sweet Janes. Think you’ve tried everything at Gossip Coffee’s 30th Avenue storefront? Think again — they’ve replaced their rice pudding with a far more heat-friendly alternative through the end of summer: gelato. Stop by their houndstooth hangout for a delightful scoop of creamy deliciousness, pair it with some doughnuts handcrafted by Scottish Francis of “MasterChef” fame, and take in the air (and a bit of juicy gossip) in their lovely backyard area.
Manducatis Rustica 4635 Vernon Blvd., Long Island City
Next time you’re waiting for the East River Ferry at Hunter's Point South Park, take a 10-minute walk up Vernon Boulevard to Manducatis Rustica. Not only can you get some of the finest pizza in LIC, but in the summer months you can feast upon the Mama Bomb, an ice cream sandwich that kicks everything up a notch. Pick out your favorite gelato (Mama herself, Gianna Cerbone-Teoli, recommends melon, avocado or pear chocolate) and have it scooped onto a halved Italian doughnut. Most of their gelato is made with agave syrup, and they usually have three milk-free options daily. Don’t worry — calories consumed on the East River Ferry don’t count. And gelato is half-price during the week from 2 to 4 p.m. AUGUST 2016 I BOROMAG.COM I 43

Harrell’s vintage picnic set from London 50 I BOROMAG.COM I AUGUST 2016
“The piano is actually from the apartment upstairs. The tenants left in a hurry and the piano was abandoned up there. My landlord brought it down in the elevator and I tuned it up.” This stroke of good fortune, followed by some restoration, seems to
be the theme of Ashley Harrell’s darling apartment in Astoria. A California transplant, Harrell lived in the West Village for five years before deciding she needed more Ashley space and light, so Harrell she moved Astoria, a neighborhood that so many artists call home. A multi-instrumentalist, singer, actress and beer maker, Harrell designed her home to reflect all

of her talents and interests. In and around her piano, you can see a ukulele and guitar hanging on the wall, but hidden away I found a violin (“I just started learning to play; I’m terrible!” she grimaced), a clarinet, an autoharp and an accordion. “My dad likes to send me instruments for my birthdays. This year I received a squeeze box—it’s kind of like a small accordion,” she explained. Take a cursory glance around the space and you get the sense that this apartment dweller is very well traveled. A sunny addition to Harrell’s coffee table
Turkish lights hang above her bed, a Mexican house tile sits above the entrance to the kitchen and a wall hanging made from reclaimed Indian saris adorns the wall in her bedroom. It turns out that Harrell has worked on various cruise ships as a singer, picking up treasures on her travels. The nautical theme carries over from her cruise ship work into her bedroom, where Ashley has created wall art out of old family photographs, photos of the ships her family came to America on, and their Ellis Island records. Music is not Harrell’s only creative outlet. Her home is an ongoing project. “I made the lighting out of old PVC pipes that I painted and then hung from the ceiling,” she said. The mannequin legs hanging from the ceiling, complete with chipped white paint that gives them a vintage feel, were a thrift-store find, she told me. I was definitely feeling the vintage vibe in her space—she even had Edith Piaf playing on vinyl as I arrived. Très chic! The liquor cabinet was a vintage Craigslist purchase, but instead of filling it with booze, this creative Astorian turned it into a fold-out sewing table. 52 I BOROMAG.COM I AUGUST 2016

“I’m taking classes at Mood Fabrics,” Harrell said. “I’m trying to make a dress. Look at this fabric—cute, right?” Harrell doesn’t only scout out these incredible finds, but she restores them herself. Take, for example, the adorable pink floor lamp that brightens up her living room. “The lamp was just out on the street,” she said. “I had it rewired and then added this cute owl shade. I also found the chandelier on the curb,” she said of the lighting above her kitchen table. “It

As we sat down on her delightfully soft sofa, I noticed she had some Fanny Brice sheet music displayed on her music stand. “I am in the process of creating a onewoman Fanny Brice show,” she explained. In fact, before meeting me, she had spent the afternoon in the archives at Lincoln Center researching the project. So, Ashley, am I to understand that today you made beer in the morning, researched your one-woman show in the afternoon and then sat down to be interviewed by me about your interior design skills in the evening? “Yep, I’m always busy with something!” Harrell’s art begins in the home and extends out into the world from there. A true artist inside (her home) and out.
