A-store-ia When Site Astoria closed its doors last month, another bigger and even better door opened in the form of an all-new rebranding with The Lockwood Shop. Owner Mackenzi Farquer miraculously transformed the new space near the Broadway stop on the N/R into a decidedly more sophisticated and undeniably larger store. Fans of Site will certainly recognize a few of the classic fingerprints that transferred, including t-shirts, soaps, gifts, books, art, clothing, and eclectic children’s goods—they even have ergonomically correct crayons, tutus, and training chopsticks. Though the store is now officially open, the Lockwood Shop Grand Opening will take place Tuesday, September 10th from 7 to 9 p.m., featuring a soul DJ, photo booth, and candied bacon lollipops. In the meanwhile, BORO sat down with Mackenzi Farquer to discuss her soon-to-be-hit addition to Astoria’s retail scene. When did you decide to close Site and open Lockwood? I knew my lease was up in Febuary and I was sort of stalking that space for awhile. Other than location on Broadway near a train station, what is different about the new space? Site was 400 square feet, and Lockwood is 1300 square feet plus a backyard. There’s also an indoor storage room with windows that would make it a great classroom and event space. I envision it as a lifestyle store plus a community space. What makes it a lifestyle store? It has a little bit of something for every facet of your life. Not only just gifts. I never wanted to open a gift store. This is getting back to my interior design roots. 6 | BOROMAG.COM | SEPTEMBER 2013
prices I wouldn’t have such a loyal following. But you do plan on offering some higher end products? The furniture I am getting in is of good quality, and will be priced accordingly. You’ll be able to order out of catalog for lighting and furniture – a full line of mid-century, modern, and industrial reclaimed wood and custom made in America lamps. For all custom orders you can sit down out our big dining table and flip through catalogs, then have it delivered to your home. Are there things for guys, too? I bought a lot of really interesting bar accessories and glassware, books, art—definitely a more robust and sophisticated men’s selection than Site, but probably no clothes. What did you learn from Site? I have learned so much. I am going to take everything I have learned about retailing and Astoria and put it into this new store. What do you miss most about Site? It’s too early to tell. I have had such a great relationship with Kaufman Astoria folks and the Queens Arts Council, so I will really miss feeling so connected to them and how conveniently they could just stop in.
What will people recognize from Site? We are keeping the t-shirts…they are our number one best sellers What are some of the biggest differences? Lockwood is a little more sophisticated with the same prices… a new fancy store without new fancy prices. How do you maintain such a reasonable price point? We all live in Queens for a reason. If I were charging Manhattan
What excites you most about your new location? Broadway has become newer and hipper. I feel like The Queens Kickshaw, The Strand, and Astoria Bier and Cheese are the new standard… and that’s the standard we all have to either meet or beat to be successful. I am one block from Pachanga Patterson, Brick, and Milkflower, as well. It’s a really great area. How long do you plan on staying here in Astoria? I can’t fathom being anywhere else.

fl This month, Lexi Beach opened the Astoria Bookshop under the raised train tracks on 31st Street between 31st Ave. and Broadway. “As soon as we had a landline, the phone went nuts,” smiles Beach. The bookshop fills a notable void in the Astoria community, though the community has been begging for an independent bookstore via online message boards. Beyond a selection of over 5,000 books, the shop also sells electronic books via their website through KOBO (which easily transfers to other ereaders), and will be hosting author readings, children story hours, book club meetings, as well as reading series. “I have really been trying to listen to what the neighborhood wants,” explains Beach, who hand-selected each title. The result is a growing drama section, as well as foreign language books—Spanish, in particular. The Astoria Bookshop also has the ability to place special orders at no extra cost, usually delivered to the store within just two days.

What do you get when you combine a pair of recently married nightlife promoters obsessed with costumes and props with an auction from the New York City Opera? The answer is TOCA NYC, a brand new specialty store in Western Queens loaded with eclectic costumes, jewelry, and home décor ranging from a nautical helmet lamp to stained glass windows and medieval axes. A visit to the store is like exploring a giant treasure chest, with jewels and antiques spilling out onto the sidewalk. Costumes are available for rental, as well as purchase, so if you ever need a La Traviata jacket, now you know where you to look!

Greek Donut = Gronut? Manhattan may have the famed cronut, and Williamsburg may be catching up with the newly hyped ramen burger, but what Queens lacks in social media frenzy, it makes up for in sheer quality, history, and deliciousness. She doesn’t call it the Gronut, but Katarina Davoultzis makes her own version of loukoumades—a traditional Greek donut (hence, Gronut)—every single day from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., and she has rapidly developed a following of loyal patrons. While Café Boulis stays open until 8 or 9 p.m. most evenings, Davoultzis is just as much a part of the draw as her famous donuts. “We make everything fresh,” she boasts with a proud smile. “You want a frappe, it’s going to take a minute,” she explains, “because I am going to get the milk straight from the cow.” The entire sidewalk café erupts in laughter. She’s part chef, part matron, part emcee, and every bit as sweet as her pastries. It is rumored that in ancient Greece, these fried dough treats were presented to winners of the Olympics as “honey

tokens”. At Café Boulis, the rings of homemade dough are shaped and fried to order using a special machine rarely found outside of Greece, then served with any variety of toppings, ranging from Nutella to chocolate syrup and sesame seeds. The best way to order them, however, is “all the way”—drizzled with Greek honey, and lightly dusted with cinnamon and powdered sugar. These mini golden rings come 6 to an order for just $4 and fit in the palm of your hand. They sell boxes and large trays, as well. Café Boulis also serves an array of paninis, salads, wraps, and other traditional Greek desserts, along with several coffees. The baklava and galaktoboureko are certainly worthy of note. But it is undeniably the loukoumades that keeps drawing in the crowds. Crispy on the outside, warm and soft spongey cake inside, the version at Café Boulis is really unparalleled, and makes the perfect morning, midday or afternoon treat. EXPLORE YOUR BORO
A BLURRED LINE BETWEEN THE PRESENT AND THE PAST Story + Photos BRADLEY HAWKS
One of the many benefits of living in Western Queens rather than Manhattan is the gift of viewing the city from a distance. Whether peeking through skateboarders at Astoria Park, through the arts garden of Socrates Sculpture Park, or from the transfer bridges of Gantry Plaza, Astoria and Long Island City offer some of the most spectacular views of one of the world’s most famous and iconic skylines. Perhaps one of the less obvious, though more poignant of vantage points is from the hallowed grounds of Calvary Cemetery in Woodside. Though both the BronxQueens and Long Island Expressways offer stunning overhead views of the burial grounds, an actual visit to Calvary provides a haunting ground level perspective, where the tombstones eerily meet the skyline, the skyscrapers appearing as a distant continuation of the horizon of grave markers. Not only is Calvary one of the oldest cemeteries in the United States—it holds
22 | BOROMAG.COM | SEPTEMBER 2013
the most graves of any other cemetery in the country, with over 3 million interments. Owned by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York and managed by St. Patrick’s Cathedral, it is the posthumous home to numerous Civil War soldiers, mobsters, politicians, and artists. Though the cemetery was established in 1848, the oldest gravestone is dated 1718. An original adult burial plot cost $7, while a child’s plot was $3. Now spanning over 365 acres, Calvary is divided into four distinct divisions containing 71 numbered sections, with several entrances staggered throughout. Full of mausoleums, obelisks, statues, and monuments, Calvary has appeared in various films, ranging from The Godfather to Zoolander. Visitation is open daily from 9 a.m to 4 p.m. Mass is held on Saturdays at 10:00 a.m in the St. Calllixtus Chapel which is located in First Calvary (the initial of the four divisions) which can be entered from the corner of Greenpoint Ave. and Gale St.

Why we flee to the Flea
Whether they come by train, ferry, bus, subway, taxi, bicycle, or even complimentary shuttle bus—no one leaves the LIC Food & Flea with an empty stomach. As the flea continues to gather momentum, and vendors have gradually found their niche, the food only seems to get better and better (as do the antiques, clothing, artwork, and specialty goods). Here are some shots of just a few of the tastiest morsels patrons have enjoyed this past month. The LIC Food & Flea is every Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 6pm, located at the corner of 46th Ave & 5th street near the Long Island City waterfront. Visit licflea.com for more details.

Thai iced tea at En(thai)ce Stracchino Pizza from Venturo
Additions to the community kitchen If you thought you were a fan of Vesta Trattoria and Wine Bar or Pachanga Patterson, you will want to be sure to make a visit soon to the third restaurant in their family, Venturo Osteria & Wine Bar. Located in Sunnyside alongside the elevated train tracks of Queens Boulevard, Chef Michelle Vido brings her signature locavore approach to sophisticated Italian cuisine— but this time she has an extremely talented pastry chef on board, too.
The dessert card reprises Vido’s Baby Jesus Cake--a warm date cake soaked in toffee sauce with a quenelle of fresh cream, along with some of Bergazyn’s own creations, including an espresso granita with mascarpone and cacao nibs, toasted almond semifreddo, and rice pudding arancini. Dinner service will soon be accompanied by brunch, and the 50-seat dining room and bar will soon be extended by a backyard dining area.
All breads, pastas, and desserts are made on the premises under the direction of pastry chef Eve Bergazyn. Pastas range from magenta beet and mascarpone pansotti to a FLOTUS pappardelle--inspired by Obama’s favorite pasta prepared by the First Lady-with shrimp, fresno chiles, and blistered tomato petals. Entrees include pork shoulder Milanese and a giant steak-cut cauliflower, dredged in goat cheese and served over a brown rice puttanesca. The flavors are simple, bold, and downright delicious. The stracchino pizza with chantarelles, spinach pesto, and a fried egg is a must-order for pie lovers.

A variety of cheeses are made in-house by Vido. New also to Venturo is a communitystyle dinner, with portions of whole roasted chicken and pork loin set to serve groups of 3 to 5.

We had heard a few months ago that a new hot dog shop was set to open next to Butcher Bar on 30th Ave, and the owners of New York Dog House have now confirmed an opening is anticipated within the next few weeks. Hot dogs, sausages, drinks, and special events all promise to add yet another specialty hangout to a street that continually lives up to its name–Grand Avenue.

If the crowds of Thai patrons already filling the rustic dining room is any indicator, it appears that the southwest corner of 34th St and 31st Avenue might have finally found a winner. The space previously occupied by the short-lived Eco Table and Aroma 31 has been transformed into En(thai)ce Thai Kitchen, with a diverse menu that offers up all of the classics, along with several Thai specialties laced with papaya, cilantro, curries, and a boatload of seafood.
While we are still excited to see what continues to roll out from Mar’s, the vintagestyled oyster bar has already gathered a steady following for its cold bar selections and classic cocktails. They just announced on Facebook that this weekend will kickoff their new brunch, as well. Dinner has showcased a granny smith apple laced lobster roll with lemon basil emulsion and steak frites with truffle butter. We can’t wait to see what they serve for a brunch fit for Neptune.

EXPLORE YOUR BORO
Delectable Day Trip:
Beyond just BBQ As you approach 89th Avenue traveling along Parsons Boulevard through the heart of Jamaica, Queens, you cannot help but take immediate notice of the pristine white and tinted glass façade protruding from the Italian architecture of the Moda building— formerly the Queens Family Courthouse. It is Jamaica’s newest sit down restaurant, CityRib, which stands like a museum in the shadow of the Blessed Virgin Church across the street. CityRib arrives on the scene as a long overdue dining addition to a popular shopping mecca, previously only catered to by Applebee’s a few blocks around the corner on Jamaica Avenue. Considering its proximity to JFK Airport and a nearby public transportation hub, a specialty restaurant of this degree has been a long-awaited addition to the area. It marks the first venture outside of Manhattan for HPH, which also owns Harry’s Steak and Harry’s Italian in the financial district. The 200-seat dining room boasts vaulted ceilings and exposed brick, with stenciled logos emblazoned on the walls, along with a 30-seat industrial-themed bar, marrying classic stone etched with roman numerals and galvanized metal. Fourteen beers are served on tap, as well as a full menu of specialty cocktails, and an intimate wine selection. But anyone coming to a place called CityRib isn’t coming for just the drinks and atmosphere. Chef Joe Mollol has taken notable caution to create a menu suited for a broad range of palates. “A lot of barbecue restaurants only offer starters that are smaller versions of the larger barbecue plates,” notes Mollol. The CityRib starters read as more of a southern approach 28 | BOROMAG.COM | SEPTEMBER 2013
to tapas, and could quite easily serve as a rewarding meal all on their own. Cheddar and garlic grits are deep-fried in sticks that arrive at the table stacked like a Lincoln Log cabin. The deviled eggs are heavenly, with the egg tops removed, the hard-boiled whites piped full of whipped egg yolk, presented like Faberge ornaments standing on end. Bacon-jeweled smashed potatoes are wrapped in wontons and served as spring rolls blanketed with melted cheddar cheese. Each small bite is addictive, and worthy alone of a visit. “Low and slow is our motto,” explains the chef (referring to temperature and cooking duration), as he presents the first of the barbecue plates. The menu boasts ribbons of carved brisket, pulled pork shoulder, and Kansas City style racks of ribs. A Cajun-buttered grilled salmon with steamed spinach is one of the restaurant’s tastier non-BBQ offerings. And the price point falls well beneath those of its competitors in the city. Side dishes include southern favorites like collard greens that sing of bacon and vinegar, a classic rendition of macaroni and cheese, moist buttery squares of corn bread, and crunchy fresh green beans. “We aren’t trying to imitate your mother’s cooking,” laughs Chef Mollol, who knows the neighborhood is rich with its own home style recipes. “But we have tried to showcase technique and flavors the will appeal to everyone.” CityRib 89-04 Parsons Blvd, Jamaica 11432 (718) 878-3599 Daily only dinner only from 4PM Weekends brunch from 11AM SEPTEMBER 2013 | BOROMAG.COM | 29

BODY & SOUL
Getting a kick out of fitness Story
Hayley Bridgewater
W
hen I heard the word that a CKO franchise was coming to Queens, I knew one way or another I would find myself walking through those doors. It is the very first location for the borough, and an exciting addition to Astoria. I have long been a huge fan of kickboxing/boxing, both as a spectator and as a participant. Whether it is to burn off excess energy or release stress, it might sound crazy, but this girl likes to hit things. CKO Kickboxing was originally developed in Hoboken, NJ and opened as Take It To The Max in November, 1997 by Joseph Andreula. It was the first of its kind, blending kickboxing with exercises and drills that you would regularly see in a boot camp environment. CKO quickly became popular in Hoboken, and in a few years, additional locations were popping up in NJ and NY. By 2005—when yours truly resided four blocks from its original location!—CKO had opened the doors to its second Hoboken gym. Today, CKO boasts more than 40 locations in its fitness arsenal.
THE SPACE IN ASTORIA
Formerly the site of a furniture warehouse, CKO Astoria is located on the second floor of 40-06 Astoria Boulevard, at the intersection of Steinway and Astoria Boulevard. The 6,000 square foot space has been gutted, refinished, and outfitted 32 | BOROMAG.COM | SEPTEMBER 2013
with 56 heavy bags, each 7 ft. tall and 120 lbs . The wall of large windows and lofted ceiling illuminate the space with natural light, and the spongy floor is fantastic for running and plyometric drills. Gloves and sports drinks can be purchased at the front desk, and there are two restrooms as well as a bank of lockers for all non-class related items. When I was visiting, they were outfitting a personal training area, which will be a great addition for those interested in enhancing their skills with some oneon-one instruction. My personal favorite touches? A killer sound system and graffiti mural reminiscent of Five Pointz.
THE GUYS
Born and raised in Queens, Leo Maragas and Anthony Parrino are high-school-
friends-turned-CKO-Astoria-owners. Though both gentlemen have professional careers, their long time friendship, mixed martial arts background, and interest in bringing fitness to the masses led them to seek out this business opportunity. Their passion and dedication was evident from the first email to our eventual on-site meeting and subsequent class. These guys are the real deal. Super charismatic and engaging, they both spoke of how important their clients are to them. “We love coming to work. We love our members. The energy is great,” says Leo. Anthony adds, “We want everyone to be comfortable, to have fun while they are doing something good for themselves. We want them to feel like family.” If the enthusiasm of the members bouncing
through the door at the start of class is any indication, I think they are accomplishing that goal.
Upon arriving, Leo asked all the newbies about past experience with kickboxing, and took us aside to demonstrate and teach the basic punches and kicks included in the class. Once he had confirmed that we understood and could perform the correct technique, we joined the veterans. Anthony started us out with laps around the gym and light cardio to get the blood pumping—all to a great playlist—and a sequence of stretches. From there, we alternated intervals of heavy bag drills with body weight exercises, agility sequences, additional cardio and plyometrics. Each set of drills was explained and taught first, and then we were let loose for a set duration of time. During these drills, Leo and Anthony made the rounds, checking each person individually,
When asked to describe their mission at CKO Astoria, Leo emphasized, “We encourage our members to go at their own pace, while reinforcing proper kickboxing technique. Each 60 minute class not only includes intense kickboxing and resistance training, but encompasses calisthenic, plyometric, and cardiovascular excercises. Additionally, members have fun, relieve stress, and shed calories in a clean, energy-filled atmosphere.” Sounds like a perfect description of what I experienced. I arrived excited by the people and trainers around me and left dripping,
AT ER laughing, and riding a serious EW G endorphin buzz. It certainly ID R won’t be my last visit. B
correcting form and offering motivation. There was a lot of variation in the hour of interval training, and we were encouraged to find our own pace. As an added plus, Leo circulated throughout the duration of class for one-on-one mitt work—my personal favorite—providing another opportunity for form correction. We wrapped up with abdominal work, a cool down run, and some stretching.

I have always been a big believer that the trainer/teacher is reflected in the student. There are people who need external circumstances and extra motivation to get themselves into action. And certainly, there are individuals, myself included, who have an internal drive and focus for all things physical fitness. Regardless of where you fall, the connection to those from whom you learn is key. It is definitely why I return every day to those who mentor me, and it is inarguably the environment Leo and Anthony are creating at CKO Astoria.
Currently classes are offered in the evenings Monday through Friday, and during the day on Saturday and Sundays. The class schedule will expand to include morning weekday classes beginning in the fall. Classes will be added to meet demand. ARTS
2013 Astoria Art Festival BORO is a proud sponsor of the return of the Astoria Art Festival. From Friday, September 27 through Sunday, October 6th, restaurants and retail spaces throughout Astoria will showcase the work of emerging and established local artists, jumpstarted by an energetic kick-off party and several boozy receptions. The festival is poised to be an exceptional collaborative opportunity to spotlight the growing number of talented Queens artists. We sat down with one of the events founders, Lizabeth Nieves, to discuss the upcoming festival. Painting by Haydee Naula
BORO: What inspired you start the Astoria Arts Festival? LN: I had curated a few smaller events throughout the years in Astoria and wanted to pull something together on a larger scale, where the venues could see that there was a demand for art to be showcased and where the neighborhood could see there was an artistic community in Queens BORO: Who will be participating? LN: We have selected 30 artists from various neighborhoods in Queens, using mixed media, photography, ink, and paintings. BORO: What kind of venues will be exhibiting the art? LN: The venues range from restaurants to bars. Anywhere that had room on their walls and was open to being involved. BORO: What can people who enjoyed last year’s festival look forward to be similar this year? LN: Last year we put together 6 events to showcase spaces and the artists over the course of a weekend. This year the festival will be a week (September 27- October 6) and there will be 8 events. BORO: What can they look forward to that will be different? 36 | BOROMAG.COM | SEPTEMBER 2013
LN: We are having an instagram photo show with 20 people at the Sparrow after party on the opening night. We will have more music tied to the different events. The
opening party at Hell Gate Social will have a local favorite band, The Ten Cent F$%^ Flicks. Â The Lockwood event will have an (continued on page 38)

BORO: How would you describe the arts scene in Astoria? LN: The arts scene is Astoria is small and growing. I was pleasantly surprised by what was submitted last year and this years submissions top that. BORO: How has that changed over your 13 years living here? LN: If there was an art scene here 13 years ago, I wasn’t aware of it. I’m sure there have always been creative people living here but I never saw them come together as a community. This is what we are trying to create with the yearly festival. Artists can meet each other and have a place to show their art. BORO: When the festival isn’t running, what is your favorite local spot to enjoy art? LN: Vesta—Guiseppe, Leo and David have always taken a proactive role in introducing new artists. Hell Gate Social—George Rallis is one of the biggest supporters of the neighborhood and building community, and Hell Gate Social has always gone above and beyond with giving people a chance, whether it be art or music. He is an integral part of the Astoria Art Festival. BORO: As an artist yourself, what about the neighborhood inspires your work? LN: I was inspired to start my website Glitter and Doom (www. 38 | BOROMAG.COM | SEPTEMBER 2013
glitteranddoom.com) by all of the wonderful creative people I have met in my neighborhood. It’s the everyday creative—trying to create something while working three jobs or sitting in an awful office job. Every person that has shared their story or has done their part to build community in Astoria has inspired me. I wouldn’t be able to do the festival without help from local artists. LN: Our website (www.astoriaartfestival.com) will be up to date with all the details about the artists, and you will be able to download a map so that you can do your own art crawl during that week.
