CONTENTS Dear Western Queens, I have always been a firm believer that anyone who allows her/himself to feel even momentarily bored or slighted for unique activities is either loony or simply lazy. We live in the most electric city on the planet, and though rent may not be getting any cheaper, we are certainly always rich in the variety around us. I spent an afternoon at the Diego Salazar Art Gallery with the immensely talented Elinore Schnurr, and get to share some of her brilliance with you in this issue. Our fundraising guru reveals how you can even host your own event for a cause of your choice. One of our local favorite lifestyle shops opened a third location in Jackson Heights, so of course we had to stop by for a mini spree. The culinary scene remains ever-changing, with Peruvian newcomer Nazca. Mamu Thai celebrates one year of success as a brick-and-mortar restaurant. While favorites from the LIC Flea head to duke it out at the Vendy Awards this month, the Kaufman Astoria Studios are welcoming a first-ever Night Market each Saturday in September. See something new. Eat something new. Create something new. As always, please share with us your own personal anecdotes, and send me any tips, comments, news or events to bhawks@ boromag.com. We look forward to sharing many more stories with you in the months ahead. Now, BRADLEY HAWKS get out there and think outside the box. editor-in-chief Gratefully yours, Bradley Hawks

The recently married entrepreneur who founded the blog We Heart Astoria just opened her third store on Aug. 27, this time in Jackson Heights. The 900-square-foot space at 77-13 37th Ave. is nestled right on the neighborhood’s parade route. “This is exactly the kind of store I love to see opening up in this neighborhood,” said local resident Dan Cronin who was there checking out the goods on opening day. The store features all of Lockwood’s signature gifts, glassware, home furnishings, children’s clothing and toys. “This is the first time we have had a whole wall devoted just to specialty cards,” Farquer said. “We have worked really hard to feature local artists.” Plan to spend more time than you might anticipate, as the shelves are jam-packed with unique items that will catch your eye. Here are just a handful of the things that grabbed us on our inaugural visit. 6 | BOROMAG.COM | SEPTEMBER 2015

Story By Angy Altamirano The corner shop is owned by musician Ken Bari Murray, who hopes to bring a new center for music to the community. Uke Hut offers all types of ukuleles and strings for sale, while offering lessons and performances to serve the neighborhood. Professional ukulele musician Sakai, who has been playing the instrument for the past seven years, is one of the teachers at the shop. Students can now enjoy hula lessons on Tuesday evenings, with Tahitian being taught from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., and traditional hula being taught from 7:30 to 9 p.m. for $25. One new shop is strumming its way into Astoria, bringing the sounds of the tropics to the big city. Uke Hut, located at 36-01 36th Ave., has brought what manager Jeff Novak calls the only shop of its kind to the northeast United States, selling ukuleles, offering lessons and bringing together the ukulele community. “We’re dedicating ourselves exclusively to ukuleles, and the aim is to have quality instruments at all price points,” said Novak, who has been playing the ukulele for four to five years. “We’re aiming to be a full-service shop.” 10 | BOROMAG.COM | SEPTEMBER 2015
For $10 you can participate in a song circle at 7:30 p.m. on a Friday. Concerts and films are offered on Saturdays and every other Wednesday for $15 to $20. “We’re easy and accessible,” says Novak. “We’re working for all level of needs. It’s an easy instrument to play compared to others. It’s very portable. It’s been said to be a very happy instrument. You never see a sad ukulele.” 36-01 36th Ave., Astoria, NY 11106 929-500-8680

FOOD & DRINK
Blend and Blend on the Water are two restaurants well-known for serving some of the most tremendously delicious Latin cuisine to the residents of Long Island City. While rumor has it they are soon expanding into Astoria to take over the digs of the former Marketa on 30th Avenue, the Blend team first had a slice of something different in store. In the middle of August, they opened the doors on a tasty—and affordable—slice shop on Vernon Boulevard, with the witty moniker of sLICe. It’s a narrow, simple space with a glass pizza counter and a convection oven, along with an intimate backyard garden. While the décor and prices are refreshingly minimal, the staff is exceptionally friendly.
Starting at $2.50, large slices are available in classic New York style, Sicilian squares, Grandmother slices, Margherita, or with any combination of toppings. While those slices are worthy—and conveniently available until late night—the $3 calzones are the most remarkable deals. From a team that knows how to stuff an empanada, they bake an incredible Italian version with ricotta and truffle oil—or go for the gold with a pepperoni pastry pouch. To wash it all down, fountain soft drinks are available for just $1 a piece. Presently working out recipe nuances, the store is only serving slices and calzones during its soft opening. But once they get rolling, the anticipated menu promises everything from pasta to a variety of Italian ices. From a team who has proven their gourmet chops, we predict everyone will stop by to get a slice of the action. 48-11 Vernon Blvd., Long Island City, NY 11101 718-937-5423 Sunday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 3 a.m.

Alex and Diego Manoslavas
LINES HAVE B By BRADLEY HAWKS
The Nazca Desert in Southern Peru is marked with hundreds of geoglyphs in shapes ranging from simple lines to elaborate figures, such as hummingbirds, monkeys, and even whales. Each design is believed to have been formed from plucking reddish pebbles from the ground to reveal the white sand beneath, with some patterns spanning more than 660 feet across. Considering these shapes have been dated from as early as 500 B.C., the artwork remains a mysterious and stunning facet of Peruvian culture—and one that has recently made its own impression on Astoria. “When you work hard for your dreams, you can do it,” says Diego Manosalvas. The ambitious 30-year-old is the owner of Nazca, Astoria’s new Peruvian restaurant named after the desert of his family’s heritage. The same designs can be seen above the storefront, as well as on the staff T-shirts.
18 | BOROMAG.COM | SEPTEMBER 2015
“I sold my car and my brother sold his motorcycle,” Manosalvas nonchalantly explains. “It has been a real challenge getting our restaurant on its feet.” Manosalvas is no stranger to hard work and sacrifice. He spent the past several years managing garages in Tribeca to save money for his dream. Behind every good dream is a great team, and this Peruvian gem of a restaurant is no exception. Along with his younger brother, Alex, the two run the place with the help of their mother, Alexandra Flores, in the kitchen. Their mother makes all of the varieties of ceviche based on tried-and-true family recipes. Also in the kitchen is Rosanna Zea, who Manosalvas met in Nazca where she was cooking in a community space for 200 to 300 people daily. “We have borrowed her for seven or eight months,” says the young owner, “just to help get us on our feet, and then she will return home.”
Causa
Pre-Meal Snack
BEEN DRAWN The space is an impressive change from its former identity as a Cold Stone Creamery. “We hauled all of the beautiful glass here from Pennsylvania in a ’99 Toyota Tacoma,” says Manosalvas. The sundrenched entryway is lined with chicken wire glass while old newspapers are decoupaged around the bar. Long curtains flow from the ceiling over more private booths in the back. While a pisco bar is the works when the liquor license is processed (hopefully in September), the current focus is on classic, Nazca cuisine. The four ceviches are absolute musttrys. They also do a classic causa, like a mashed potato roulade stuffed with shrimp, crabmeat or chicken. The Jalea arrives like a cornucopia of fried seafood. Even hamburgers get the Peruvian treatment, where well-seasoned patties are practically gift-wrapped in an omelet napkin. Grilled meats and seafood along with stews are rendered to delicious effect.
Definitely save some room for a sweet ending. Nazca has perfected the little caramel-kissed cookies known as alfajores— but how can you go wrong with rice pudding and lucuma cheesecake? 34-20 Broadway Astoria, NY 11106 929-522-0297

BODY & SOUL
The New Kid on The Block is By HAYLEY BRIDGEWATER
They hit the ground running, never stopped growing, and within only a few short years, Sage Fitness Studio Astoria has moved into a new location right around the corner from the original outpost. The location change came out of necessity. High demand for the product, more classes on the schedule and an interest in expanding the format led them to a very different yet totally exciting space. Owner/trainer Danny Suarez explained, “Our classes had become packed to the brim, and I understood that in order for us to maintain the quality of training that our clients have come to expect that we needed to move to a larger space to accommodate the growth.” The new space is more than three times the size of the old studio at 2,750 square feet, with a 30-foot vaulted ceiling and fantastic skylight. It is outfitted with Power Racks, wallmounted pull-up bars, barbells, bumpers, rowers, ski machines, TRX apparatuses and kettle bells. The set-up is accessorized with bands, ropes, boxes, cones and medicine balls. Upon entering the facility, there is a welcoming reception area with WiFi accessibility, storage cubbies and restrooms. With the growth of the space came some changes in the training itself. In explaining the evolution of the Sage Astoria programming format, Danny has coined the term “powerbuilding.” “Powerbuilding is the simple but effective combination of the lifting styles found in powerlifting and bodybuilding. Our powerbuilding routine is based on a four-
22 | BOROMAG.COM | SEPTEMBER 2015
week program to create proficiency and consistency. It allows us the ability to track and analyze the individual client’s progression. We have also added our own style of HIIT (high-intensity interval training) to be done intermittently with the powerbuilding workouts to supplement the overall training. It is a fun yet constantly changing and challenging workout.” As I am fortunate to do with a majority of my features (a perk second only to the incredible people that I get to meet), I was invited to observe and participate in workouts at Sage. This time around I observed a class led by coach Sarah Gawron, a sweet, assertive and precise teacher who seamlessly tailored the daily workout to the various ability levels in the room. Her extensive dance background was apparent in her ability to scan, correct and break down mechanics of movement both for the first-time participants as well as the regulars in the class. I returned an additional time to workout with Danny (as I have done a few times in the old location), and he did not disappoint. Open, engaging, clear and confident, he is a natural teacher. Knowing that I have been rehabilitating an injury but familiar with my “all systems go” mentality, he was careful to make the adjustments necessary for me to safely participate, while pushing me when the exercise allowed. He is adept at working the room and keeping everyone motivated

G rown Up and positive. It clear that he genuinely cares about each and every one of his clients. This dedication has always been apparent to me in the sense of community at Sage. It is a common occurrence for groups of members and trainers to participate in races, sporting events and contests. Danny elaborated, “The thing that excites me the most about our expansion is the endless possibility for growth, not necessarily with our company but more so with our clients and what they can achieve inside the gym and functionally outside of it. With the foundation of strength established, all other elements of fitness come with much more ease. We not only encourage the competitive aspect of our clients to shine through, but also the social aspect by having organized events like barbecues, outings, parties and to network [with] the gym’s various clientele. They all come from different walks of life, but have one thing in common—Sage Fitness. That’s what we’re really about: community.”
Group fitness sessions are 60 minutes in length and are capped at 15 clients to guarantee quality interaction with the trainer. Though the specifics of the workouts do change based on the day and week, they are comprised of mobility work, a warm-up, strength and conditioning components, and a cooldown with stretching. There are no signup fees, contracts or long-term commitments. The client simply pays for what they use.

Do-It-Yourself... and Do-It-For-GOOD! By Gabrielle C. Sherb

!
With carefree summer days setting like the sun on the horizon, now is the perfect time to think about making fall a season to remember. There’s no better way to do it than to get your friends and neighbors together and support a cause that means a lot to you. Some of the most successful fundraising campaigns and phenomena (ALS Association Ice Bucket Challenge, anyone?) started with a few caring individuals with a fun idea that motivated and inspired others to give. As a fundraising and development professional, I’ve planned many events, big and small, and learned a few tricks of the trade. Here are a few simple steps and resources that can guide you on your pursuit to engaging, energizing and raising some much-needed funds to help make the world just a little better.
Step 1:
Find your passion
Love animals? Want to make sure the beaches from Astoria Park to the Rockaways are clean? New York State has over 140,000 nonprofits to choose from and over 8,400 in Queens County alone. Whatever your passion is, find an organization that speaks to you. To learn about the different organizations around, check out Charity Navigator (www.charitynavigator.org), Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance (www. give.org) or Idealist.org (www.idealist.org). These sites not only list organizations by category, but also give important statistics about leadership, financial health, programs and initiatives.
Step 2:
Connect with the cause
Once you’ve found an organization that is working toward your passion, reach out. Have a conversation with a staff member to share your interest in putting something together on their behalf, and ask what their needs are. Organizations are only as good as the volunteers and the community leaders who support them, so don’t be afraid to discuss. Some organizations may have helpful tips, resources and potentially a staff member who can guide you and set your fundraising and friend raising endeavors on a course for smooth sailing.
Step 3:
Create your space
I have a friend who has raised tens of thousands of dollars for juvenile diabetes by combining his passion for the cause with cycling. Think about an activity you love to do, and see how you can connect it to others. While some might want to go the sports route, there is no one way to raise support for an organization that you care about. Turn your standard Sunday brunch into a “Brunch and Learn” or ask your favorite local pub to host a happy hour special for the cause of your choice. With great sites like Razoo (https://www.razoo.com/), Go Fund Me (www.gofundme.com) and Crowdrise (www.crowdrise.com), setting up a page and raising support is easier than ever.
Step 4:
Set a goal
If you thought kicking a ball into a net or hitting a home run felt great, imagine the feeling of meeting a goal of raising much-needed dollars for a cause you are passionate about. I have seen the best come out in people when united around raising support and awareness for a cause while being able to see the change in their community or world around them unfold. The goal should be something you feel is attainable—every dollar goes a long way to help impact an organization’s work. Have a conversation with your nonprofit professional to learn more about what certain amounts raised will do and how it will impact their mission.
Step 5:
Spread the word!
You’ve got your organization, you’ve got your space and you’ve set a goal. Now it’s time to spread the word! Gather together your friends, colleagues, neighbors and others to join you as your team, and then share with others. Everyone can share a special skill or talent that can add to success of the campaign or event. Once you’ve got your team in place, put yourself out on social media, send out personal emails and even pick up the phone. The personal touch will always go a long way and make people feel like their support really matters. Sites like Eventbrite (www.eventbrite.com), Charity Happenings (http://charityhappenings.org/ticketing/) and Charity Buzz (www.charitybuzz.com) are great ways to get your event or cause on the map. Remember, every chance you can bring together people to make a difference can change lives and communities more than you could dream. Happy planning! SEPTEMBER 2015 | BOROMAG.COM | 33

2014 Winners Ice + Vice
The 11th Annual Vendy Awards, New York City’s premier street food competition, has announced the finalists who will duke it out for the top prize on Saturday, Sept. 12, on Governor’s Island from 12:30 to 5 p.m. This year, a few top contenders from the LIC Flea have been nominated in a brand-new category called Street Drinks. Flea favorite Tea + Milk will put their magnificent bubble teas up against the whimsical refreshments of Renegade Lemonade (formerly known as Frittering Away). The LIC Flea served as the training ground for both vendors. Tea + Milk now has a brick-and-mortar shop at 32-02 34th Ave. Renegade Lemonade served their beverages this year at Madison Square Eats and on Mondays at the HBO Bryant Park Summer Film Festival.
Renegade Lemonade's Peach Mint
Another Astoria vendor up for a Vendy Award is the Souvlaki Lady who runs a popular Greek food cart on Ditmars Boulevard. Her cart is in the running for the coveted Vendy Cup, the competition’s top honor. Other categories to be presented with awards at the event include Rookie of the Year, Best Market Vendor and Best Dessert. Last year’s winner for best dessert was LIC Flea favorite Ice + Vice, who recently opened their own ice cream store at 221 E. Broadway in Manhattan. Their unconventional flavors are making a huge hit downtown, with titles like Shiso Pretty, Basic B and Gold Digger. Can’t decide which vendor is your favorite? Try the marriage of two of them with the new floats being offered at the Ice + Vice store, featuring the powerhouse duo of their frosty desserts with Renegade Lemonade. That’s what we call a win-win.

Alissa & Siwat Thitiwatana
Thai cuisine has exploded onto the culinary landscape of Queens, so we stopped by one of our new favorites—Mamu Thai—for a chat about their journey from running a successful food truck in the city to operating their 1-year-old brickand-mortar location in Astoria. Alissa and Siwat Thitiwatana are the brother and sister team who run the operation with the help of their mother in the kitchen. Within moments after sitting down, we also felt just like family.
BORO: What is the story behind the name, Mamu? Mamu: Ma (pronounced Maa) means mother in Thai, and Mu is our mother’s nickname—Mamu is what we call her, so we named it after her. BORO: When did you first introduce the truck? Mamu: The truck first hit the street in February of 2013. We ran a successful Kickstarter campaign which definitely helped generate some interest and buzz in the introduction of the truck.
Fried Wontons
BORO: What were some of the most important lessons you learned on the truck that prepared you for the actual storefront? Mamu: The food truck business has definitely taught us to always expect the unexpected. People often think that running a food truck is all fun and an exciting adventure, but there are so many factors involved in a mobile food operation that you need to be prepared for—as opposed to a stationary location. Engine trouble, propane, cleaning the truck daily, electrical issues, weather, finding parking, parking tickets, turf wars, etc. And of course, you have to load and unload everything you use on a daily basis. While it may be a bit lower startup cost to open a truck than a brickand-mortar, it is a logistical nightmare running a truck on a daily basis.
Noodle Soups are a house specialty
BORO: Well thank goodness you did it! Your food is terrific. Do any of the recipes have special stories behind them? Mamu: Almost all of the recipes have been in our family through many generations. All of our noodle dishes were developed by my uncle, who owned a few noodle shops in Bangkok. We have signature sauces that we use for our pad Thai and pad si ew, and the curry puffs, which are my grandmother’s recipe, are handmade by my mother every week. We use fresh rice noodles that are hand cut every morning.

FOOD & DRINK
BORO: Success comes from so much more than just great recipes. What do each of you bring to the duo that helps make it work? Mamu: Siwat came from a medical background before training at Thai restaurants to be a chef. He worked in an operating room for over eight years, so he has a great sense of work flow and attention to details that make the organization run smoothly. He also knows how to best utilize a person’s skill set, and he manages the staff very effectively. Alissa worked in marketing and sales for over a decade before the food business, so she mainly handles our vendor relations, special events and some of the social media Yum Goon Chiang with sweet pork sausage and fresh mint content. There is so much going on simultaneously as we have the truck and the restaurant, but we also provide office catering services—so we just try to help each other as best as we can to get things done. BORO: What are some of the most unique dishes you hope people might branch out and try? Mamu: We love when people are open to trying new things and venturing out of their comfort zones when it comes to Thai food. We often have customers who have never had Thai food come in and become regulars. A lot of times during the week, Kua Gai rice noodles with chicken, egg, and garlic we have “secret menu” items that we’d have for staff meal for the day, which we post on Instagram. If people are keen enough, they’ll ask. BORO: What do you think brings the draw to Astoria for such a wide variety of Thai cuisine? Mamu: Honestly, it was complete happenstance that we opened our shop in Astoria. The truck was getting fixed at a garage, which is across the street from the restaurant, and it was brought to our attention that the space would soon be vacant. We really love being in Astoria. Nearby neighborhoods like Elmhurst and Woodside have an enormous Thai demographic, and it is full of Thai eateries and markets. It was just a matter of time before Astoria started to get a taste of authentic Thai. Queens has always been the most culinarily diverse borough.
Moo Ping BBQ Pork Skewers
Mango with Sticky Rice
BORO: What do you feel are some of Mamu’s greatest strengths? Mamu: The food we serve is something we’ve personally grown up eating. These are the same recipes that have been around in our family for a long time. It is our goal to be straight up, not fancy or fusion. There is always a time and place for that, but we want to provide delicious home-style Thai food. Our noodle truck definitely helped us spread that around the city quickly, and our little shop is an extension of that.

THE ARTS
The Mind’s Eye Elinore Schnurr is one of Long Island City’s most prolific artists. Even a casual perusal of her library of work offers a blend of images often familiar, always vibrant, and somewhat haunting. A contemporary representational painter, her works have been displayed in countless galleries across the country, and commissioned for just as many private and corporate collections. While her early work offers keen observations of the human form and how it conveys emotion and energy, her more recent work—while still insightfully depicting the human form—has turned its focus inward, offering a bold commentary on images actually seen juxtaposed with those in our mind’s eye, as well as the confusion and beauty resulting when those worlds are muddled within the framework of everyday life. From suited men entering the World Trade Center, to friends unwinding at a café, please enjoy this miniature journey into the mind of one of our favorite local artists.

he Astoria Flea & Food Market was a tremendous success last summer, bringing together vendors and patrons in the spacious back lot of the iconic Kaufman Astoria Studios—the only back lot in New York City. This fall, the team behind the LIC Flea will reunite once again to bring Astoria its first night market—all in the same space that plays home to the filming of such blockbuster hits as “Orange is the New Black,” “Nurse Jackie” and “Sesame Street.’’ For three Saturdays in September (Sept. 12, 19 and 26) the city will descend upon Astoria from 6 to 11 p.m. to sample international cuisine and shop through stalls of vintage clothing, works of local artists, children’s products, furniture, jewelry and gifts of every size and shape. Among the anticipated vendors are You are Here Studios, Mister Guacamole, Ciccia Bella, HBH Sandwich, Lumpia Merienda and the Bao Shoppe. Visitors will be able to enter the lot on 36th Street either from 34th Avenue or through the grand entrance on 35th Avenue featuring a 40-foot-high steel gate, designed by David Rockwell and the Rockwell Group. “I’m thrilled to partner with Kaufman Astoria Studios and open their outdoor movie lot to the general public. It will be a fun and family-friendly destination to enjoy the remaining evenings of summer,” said Joshua Schneps, LIC Flea & Food president. “Our first-class flea vendors offer the opportunity to discover unique items to buy and our food vendors serve up delicious eats you can’t find anywhere else.”

On Aug. 6, 2015, The New York Pops performed an inaugural concert at its new summer home, Forest Hills Stadium, with two-time Tony Award winner Sutton Foster. On the heels of her sold-out solo debut at Carnegie Hall in March 2015, Foster performed a variety of classic and contemporary Broadway numbers, as well as a selection of her favorite tunes along with special guests Megan McGinnis and Colin Donnell. The concert was sponsored by Morgan Stanley and Reed Smith.
Center for the Performing Arts, principal pops conductor of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and principal pops conductor designate of the Houston Symphony, beginning in the 2017-2018 season. Reineke is a frequent guest conductor with The Philadelphia Orchestra and has been on the podium with the Boston Pops, The Cleveland Orchestra and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at Ravinia. His extensive North American conducting appearances include San Francisco, Houston, Seattle, Edmonton and Pittsburgh.
The concert also expanded the orchestra’s Kids in the Balcony program, offering over 2,000 children an opportunity to learn about and enjoy live music for free.
FOREST HILLS STADIUM
“It’s been a joy working with The New York Pops and with Steven Reineke, and I’m thrilled to join them in their inaugural season at Forest Hills Stadium,” said Sutton Foster. “Steven brings an innovative, fun approach to symphonic pops concerts, and I feel lucky to share the stage with him and this brilliant orchestra. The musicians are sensitive and versatile, and the orchestra brings every chart it plays to life. Performing outdoors is such a joy.” “Sutton is an incredible singer, a versatile actress and one heck of a dancer,” said music director Steven Reineke. “She always puts on such a great show.” Forest Hills Stadium events have been made possible through a partnership with the local community, with a focus on making concerts an experience to be enjoyed by all New Yorkers.
THE PLAYERS
The New York Pops is the largest independent pops orchestra in the United States, and the only professional symphonic orchestra in New York City specializing in popular music. From Billie Jean King to The Beatles, Jimmy Connors to Jimi Hendrix, Chris Evert to The Rolling Stones, for decades the stadium at the West Side Tennis Club was not only host of the U.S. Open, it was also a renowned music venue, tucked into a leafy enclave of stately homes in Queens’ Forest Hills neighborhood. However, when the U.S. Open moved to larger space in Flushing, Queens in 1977, the architecturally stunning, horseshoe-shaped Forest Hills Stadium fell into disrepair and its days as a music venue faded. In 2013, concert promoters partnered with the West Side Tennis Club to rehabilitate the stadium and bring events back to this storied venue. Forest Hills Stadium reopened in August 2013 with an inaugural performance by Mumford & Sons on their “Full English” tour. The concert, the first in the stadium in more than 15 years, brought music fans from all over the world to Forest Hills to experience live music in a truly unique environment. The 2014 concert season featured performances by Zac Brown Band, Drake, Lil Wayne, Brand New, Modest Mouse, The Replacements and Phil Lesh. Following its reopening, the stadium underwent a restoration, including a number of renovations and improvements. These included ticketed seating in the upper bowl, improved ADA seating options, widened aisles and handrail installation as well as a new concourse plan featuring easier access to food, beverage and other facilities. Ticketing was improved through a new, fan-friendly reserved ticketing system provided by Ticketfly.
