CONTENTS When I was a child, I always loved September: new clothes, new school supplies, new classes and, best of all, new beginnings. The back-toschool season was always so full of possibilities. As adults, we work year-round, and one month bleeds into the next; the most concrete new beginning we get rolls around on Jan. 1. I don’t know about you, but I miss the start of a new school year. We can’t turn back time, but we can recreate that feeling. We compiled a handy list of classes that you can take right here in western Queens, from baking to salsa dancing, that can give you KATRINA MEDOFF something to look forward to this fall. Turn to editor-in-chief page 18 to learn more. As always, BORO has a little something for everyone, whether you’re interested in fashion, books, theater, food, nightlife, music or interior design. Do you have any tips, news or stories to share with BORO? Email me at katrina@boromag.com. And please connect with us on Twitter (@BOROMAG) and Instagram (@boromagazine). We love hearing from you. Wishing you a “back-to-school” season full of new beginnings,

t’s been a hot, humid summer, and when the sun wasn’t beating down on our borough, Queens was hit by the pouring rain. But Astorians know how to keep their looks effortlessly stylish even when caught in a storm. Who knows — maybe you’ll find yourself on the pages of BORO next month!

FOOD & DRINK

W

estern Queens residents have a new place to drink, mingle and have brunch, thanks to a new Sunnyside bar that just had its soft opening on Aug. 19. Ida’s Nearabout took over the location formerly occupied by Irish pub Molly Blooms at 43-13 Queens Blvd. “I just love the neighborhood,” said Paul Longo, who owns Ida’s along with his brother, Westyn Longo, and Paul McDaid. “I think Sunnyside already has a great vibe as far as the types of people that live there, and the whole layout is super conducive to what’s coming next.” Longo sees Sunnyside as the neighborhood “next in line” as a location for young people who are being priced out of places like Williamsburg and Long Island City. Queens Boulevard, in particular, is a “cool strip” in Sunnyside, which made it a great location for his new bar, Longo said. What’s the story behind the bar’s unique name?

Nearabout Hangout

BY KATRINA MEDOFF

“My great-grandmother’s name is Ida, and I have a friend in Montana who has a ranch, and his mom had preserved this ranch wolf and had it taxidermied, and the name of the wolf was Ida as well,” Longo said. When Longo’s friend moved, he gave Longo the taxidermied wolf. “My great-grandmother is 105 years old — she’s still alive — and it kind of worked out, and I thought, OK, maybe this is some weird sort of sign, let’s go with ‘Ida’s,’” Longo said. Now, Ida the wolf is mounted above the bar. 10 I BOROMAG.COM I SEPTEMBER 2016

@KatrinaMedoff @katya_m22

What about the second half of the bar’s name? “I’m kind of a blues freak, and a ‘nearabout’ is a blues term which comes from an old song, and it’s like you’re almost somewhere,” Longo said. “Like, you’re nearabout Sunnyside, you’re hanging around, you’re just about to be somewhere. I think it’s a really cool term that I hope catches on.” Ida’s Nearabout will be playing upbeat music at night, but listen for obscure blues tracks playing during brunch, along with some reggae.

“I love playing different kinds of music,” Longo said. “It won’t just be a nerdy Top 40s bar. We put a lot of thought into the playlist.” Ida’s has 12 draft beers on tap and an “awesome bottled beer list,” Longo said, and the beers will rotate so that people can try new things. There’s also a full cocktail menu with “an emphasis on really well-made, simple classics” and a wine list curated by a sommelier. The bar’s full menu, described by Longo as “elevated new American

food,” debuted at the beginning of September, with an emphasis on appetizers and shared plates. “Our chef is really cool,” Longo said. “We’re going to tie in some element of Southern influence, that sort of blues, Creole, Cajun vibe.” That means you’ll find a fried chicken sandwich and biscuits there as well as a peel-and-eat shrimp share dish with Southern seasoning. “It’s just going to be hearty and good, and we’ll mix in some healthy stuff as well.”

The kitchen will be open till midnight on weekdays and 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. There’s a separate menu for brunch, which is available on Saturdays and Sundays starting at 10 a.m. Brunch offerings will include items such as chicken and waffles, a grain bowl, a granola bowl, and “a really slamming, simple bacon, egg and cheese,” Longo said. When the weather’s nice, diners can enjoy brunch in the back garden. The backyard adds a homey feel to Ida’s,

as do design elements such as old Americana images and hand-painted panels underneath the front of the bar. There’s a big copper ice well in the center of the bar that both acts as an accent piece and chills beer glasses and wines. Ida’s will host a grand opening bash in the coming months, but you don’t have to wait until then to check out this great new neighborhood bar. It’s open now, so grab a drink and don’t forget to say hi to Ida. SEPTEMBER SEPTEMBER 2016 2016 II BOROMAG.COM BOROMAG.COM II 11 11

By Antonella Saravia @tsaravia Summer can be a nice break from your regular schedule, with lazy days in the heat, exotic vacations and day trips to the beach. But let’s face it — after months of taking it easy, you start miss the rush a little. The great news is that fall is here and as F. Scott Fitzgerald said, “Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.” It’s back-to-school season, folks, and if you think that we’re gonna let you miss out on

Their programs encourage basic skills such as rhythm and coordination while introducing students to the je ne sais quoi that comes with the art known as dance. Loosen up this fall with a group salsa package. Get out there with specialized dancers and equally curious peers. Forget the online dating, put away your phone, invite a friend out and have some fun! See what swings into place. Sol offers an introductory promotion for new students interested in salsa. Though single classes are available, guests are encouraged to make commitments as short as three weeks. The Salsa Boot Camp Special, which starts at $50, gives you up to six hours of dancing! For those who fall in love with the new experience, Sol Dance Center offers socials and dance nights to add to the fun. If you really hit it off, there’s even better news: you can become a member and get access to unlimited classes. This deal includes everything from classical ballet to capoeira.

the adrenaline that autumn’s new beginnings offer, you’re wrong. Just because you’re an adult doesn’t mean that you can’t experience the feeling of a brand-new school year. This fall, you get to join the kids in on the fun. How are your New Year’s resolutions going? How productive was your summer? No matter. You get a second chance at going out with a bang before 2016 wraps up. We’ve compiled a list of classes that might spark your interest, from baking to wheel throwing. You know you want something new. So, let’s get moving:

Arts & Crafts

Wheel Throwing Some are all about the feet, but for those who like to use their hands, there is the art of using a potter’s wheel. Beginner students at the Brickhouse Ceramic Art Center in Long Island City will become experienced in basic glazing techniques as well as the firing process. Students make their first pots from start to finish. The great thing about the classes is that they are limited in size so that everyone is able to receive one-on-one instruction. If you discover that you’ve got a knack for it, you can hone your skills and learn how to make more advanced forms like plates, covered jars and large bowls. They say it can get a little messy, but this chaos sounds like the good kind. Fall sessions at Brickhouse Ceramic Art Center are on the verge of starting, and you’re just in time to test those hand skills out. You can book a spot in the six-week program (Monday classes begin on Sept. 12 and Wednesday classes start on Sept. 14) or the sevenweek program (classes start between the end of October and beginning of November). Classes cost between $300 and $350, depending on length. Prospective students are encouraged to visit the studio and get a tour of the facility. The staff is cool, and who knows? Pottery just might be your “thing.”

TRX Fall might just be the time to try the oldest “rejuvenator” in the book: the workout. Whatever motivates you to get out there and sweat, this is one of the purest ways to a fresh perspective. Astoria’s Sage Gym, founded in late 2009 by award-winning trainer Jordan Schneider, has an awesome menu of services. A crowd favorite and “must try” workout, TRX — short for Total Body Resistance Exercise — is a suspension training method that’s available in various packages. The method allows users to work against their own body weight for a fast, effective, total body workout. It’s tricky and takes some time getting used to, so the trainers at Sage will be useful guides as you journey into the body weight exercise world. Members are encouraged to commit anywhere between 15 and 25 classes. If you’re

Baking If you’re looking to add a class to your routine and you have a sweet tooth, then we’ve got a offer you can’t refuse: a baking course at Sugar Room, Sunnyside’s cake design studio. Participants learn techniques such as cake decorating, crumb coating, buttercream making, cupcake making and decorating, and how to make the most delicious Dominican cake. starting the last week of September, for $400. In just three weeks, you can learn how to make different cakes, fillings, and icings. Though there is a long list of options to pick from, this sweet deal might be the place to start. Sugar Room classes are perfect if you’re hungry to acquire some serious baking techniques, but even if you’re just looking for a new hobby, this might be the place for you; founder Juan Arache’s love for his work can inspire even the most casual of bakers.

serious about starting something new this fall, you can book a 20-session package at $460. ou may recognize his image high above Times Square and on buses, cabs and subways throughout the city. The costume, makeup and headdress give this statuesque man an even more regal appearance. As his childhood buddy, I would argue that his signature grin always gives him away, stripped of the theatrical accouterment. Most people, though, might not make the connection between the face on the billboards and that man next in line, grabbing tea or a bite, running for the train on his daily commute into the city. He is Mufasa, King of Pride Rock, Broadway’s Lion King. He is also western Queens resident L. Steven Taylor, a creator, artist, father, student, teacher and friend. For Taylor, it is always surreal to see his image throughout the city he calls home, but he says that he is grateful for

these reminders of the course life can take. As many performers know, stable show contracts can be hard to come by, the process often taking much longer than a standard hiring courtship. Taylor first auditioned for “The Lion King” casting associates at an open call at Indiana University in 2002. After waiting in line for hours with more than 1,000 hopefuls, he sang (on a very cold voice). He was let go, and he drove back to Indy with friends. Still, he had felt a sense of interest from the casting people. So Taylor auditioned again after moving his wife, Erin, and son, Steven Jr., to Seattle for an unrelated theater job. That audition led to subsequent auditions, and eventually to San Francisco, where he was

invited to attend “Lion King University.” “It was an amazing experience,” Taylor said. “We were taught South African history, language, dialects, dance and culture, all culminating in a performance for the creative team.” All of these events occurred over a span of three years, while Taylor was working on other shows. One day, during his lunch break on “Miss Saigon” at a theater in Seattle, he was offered a sixmonth temporary ensemble/ Mufasa understudy track in “The Lion King” on Broadway. “That is when we first moved to Astoria,” Taylor said. “I took the contract; the guy never came back, so I stayed with the show for eight months. After that it was a series of years bouncing between Mufasa

on the Gazelle National Tour and ensemble work understudying Mufasa and Scar on Broadway. I’ve been the permanent Mufasa on Broadway a year this past June. A 12-year journey from Wildebeest #1 to the king of Pride Rock.” Twelve years connected to a show can

seem unique in the entertainment business, though it does occur. Taylor, like many artists, also takes on other opportunities, but had much to say about his connection to this special show. “I love the effect it has on people,” Taylor said. “It is such a positive show, so univer-

sally relatable. At some point in our life we were all a Simba, lost trying to find his way. As a father I relate to Mufasa — wanting to keep my son safe and instill ideals that he will eventually pass on to his kids and affect his own community.” He appreciates not only the show’s portrayal of this ubiquitous family dynamic but also the glimpse it gives the audience into South African culture. “I adore how the culture is represented in the show,” he said. “There aren’t a lot of shows that represent African Americans in the roles of Africans in such a positive light, and under the lens of this beautiful South African heartbeat. Especially with everything going on in the media, we have an opportunity to dispel stereotypes every night. We get to make people think differently.” After all this time working on the show, Taylor calls the people he works with “family.” “We laugh together, cry together,” he said. “We have been through births, weddings, deaths, major events — they keep my head straight and give me the opportunity to do the same for them.” Taylor admits that he never saw his life unfolding in quite this way. “Broadway wasn’t the primary goal,” he said. “It was creating — a character, choreography, whatever it was. Being an artist means getting out of your own way, especially when creating art that is going to affect others. It forces you to look at yourself critically, change, evolve, provide space and transport someone else. Doing that for another is one of the greatest things we can do. Performing does that for me; Broadway is icing on the cake.” SEPTEMBER 2016 I BOROMAG.COM I 23

ARTS + ENTERTAINMENT

FAMILY HANGOUT SPOT

QUEENS FAVES I asked Taylor to share some of his favorite places for family time, fitness and food with BORO readers.

“I love Astoria Park. There is so much going on year-round,” he said. “I remember in the winters taking Steven Jr. sledding there. In the summers, it was the pool. It is a chill place … the movies, the carnival, running around the track. It has been great to watch it develop over the years.”

FITNESS DOMA Taekwondo on Ditmars has been a significant part of Taylor and Steven Jr.’s father/son bonding time. It grew an ongoing appreciation for and incorporation of martial arts into Taylor’s daily life. “Steven Jr. started there at [age] 5. He loved it. I went to a family class and was instantly hooked. Master Lee (the owner at the time) is infectious. He is the biggest, cuddliest teddy bear and so knowledgeable of the art form. I was a student and a volunteer assistant. It eventually became a five-year second job. Martial arts provides clarity. It triggers different parts of my brain and keeps me centered. There is a sense of balance. When I am training consistently it transfers over into my performing life. I am more receptive to people and energies, and my booking ratio goes up.”

FOOD

“Pizza Palace!” Taylor said with no hesitation. “My buddy Jack runs the place. It is so chill and laid-back. It is like walking into my uncle’s kitchen. I love to hang there.”

New Thriller

In Town BY KATRINA MEDOFF

@KatrinaMedoff

e have good news for western Queens fans of thrillers like “The Girl on the Train”: there’s a new novel in town, and, in fact, it just happens to be set in our town. “Love Her Madly,” a novel by M. Elizabeth Lee, just hit the shelves, and the last third of the book is set in Astoria. Lee lives in Jackson Heights now, but she was an Astoria resident at the time she penned the novel. “When I was writing the book in Astoria, I could imagine these characters walking the streets and waiting for the train next to me,” Lee said. In “Love Her Madly,” two college friends, Glo and Cyn, fall for the same guy, Raj. They decide to share him, and everything goes smoothly — at first. But tension between the best friends boils over during a study abroad trip to Costa Rica, and then Cyn disappears, leaving Glo searching for answers. The novel is told from Glo's point of view. “It’s a thriller and a bit of a mystery, but

@katya_m22

it’s also got a strong emotional core,” Lee said. “At the core of the story is the friendship between these two women.” Years after Cyn’s disappearance, Glo, an attorney, and Raj, an actor, are living together in Astoria. They begin having sightings in Manhattan of a woman who looks like Cyn. “In Manhattan, that’s where they have most of the sightings of this woman they think might be their dead friend,” Lee said. “When the main character is back in Astoria, that’s where they feel safe, because that’s where they moved to, they settled down and started their lives and it feels like everything’s going to be OK there, but even that is an illusion.”

M. Elizabeth Lee at the book launch for "Love Her Madly" at Astoria Bookshop

While Glo is running in Astoria Park, she thinks for a split second that she sees Cyn. “She goes running in Astoria Park in the morning and it’s very moody and cloudy and ominous, and it’s supposed to mirror her mental state, her anxiety about this ghost from the past who seems to be returning and she doesn’t know why,” Lee said. “The park is such a majestic place, but you also get the sense of Manhattan in the distance. In my book it’s a distant threat; whatever is stalking Glo is over there in the city, and where she is, she still feels separate from that. The park there is very iconic with the bridge rising in the distance, and Manhattan doesn’t exist if it’s foggy.” “Love Her Madly” has drawn comparisons to not only Paula Hawkins’ “The Girl on the Train” but also other popular thrillers like Gillian Flynn’s “Gone Girl,” Kimberly McCreight’s “Reconstructing Amelia” and Mary Kubica’s “The Good Girl.” “The thing that I think is different about ‘Love Her Madly’ than a lot of thrillers that are out there is that a lot of thrillers have a tone that’s more consistently dark, while ‘Love Her Madly,’ until things begin to go wrong, has a comedic edge to it,” Lee said. “It doesn’t take itself super seriously, so when things do go down, it’s like, 'Whoa — what just happened?’ I tried to make it so it’s a ride. I don’t like to feel like I’m being dragged through one desperately dismal situation to another, so I wanted to have moments that people could relate to in real life, because nothing is all sadness or all comedy. It’s all mixed together.” “Love Her Madly” had its launch party at the Astoria Bookshop on Aug. 16. “I hope that people in Queens get a kick 34 I BOROMAG.COM I SEPTEMBER 2016

out of [the novel] because the characters live in Astoria and they go and do Astoria things,” Lee said. Lee said that it “just felt right” to set the last part of the story in western Queens because “it’s who the characters were. They’re kind of chill. My characters are a little more laid-back and they’re not very status-conscious; they’re just trying to live a happy life and do the things that they love, and I think Astoria’s a very nurturing place for that. It’s also a place full of strivers and dreamers. It’s a place where you can relax and live your life and go about what you want to do without feeling judged or watched.” Lee herself could be described as a dream-

er; she moved to New York to be an actress right after graduating from college in Florida. It was a wonderful experience, she said, but “it became a little discouraging because I kept getting the same girlfriend roles.” After five years of auditioning and acting, she took the initiative to start writing her own short scripts and produce them with different directors. “It was so exciting and so much fun that I began to write full-length screenplays,” she said. “Each time we did it, it got better; it got more fun. It was so much fun to create something with women in powerful roles, in interesting roles, as full-on people, actual people.” Then, Lee and her husband took a year

The following is an excerpt from one fateful scene in “Love Her Madly,” in which Glo, the main character, goes for a jog in an ominously foggy Astoria Park:

My footsteps whispered off the pavement as I jogged down the slumbering streets that led to the park. A fog had descended, thick and milky. The graceful elbow of the Triborough Bridge extended up into a mysterious cloud mass, its red aviation warning lights blinking like the eyes of a hidden monster. For all I could see from the top of the park, Manhattan might no longer have existed. I ran past the empty Olympic-size pool in Astoria Park. It would be months before it was filled. There were a few other joggers out, their forms indistinct in the mist. Dog walkers skirted the periphery, wearing thick coats over thin pajamas against the damp, all of us ghosts to one another.

{

away from the city to travel. “I wasn’t able to do the acting and the filmmaking, so I decided that I was going to concentrate on writing a more longform piece, and that’s where ‘Love Her Madly’ came from.” When she returned home to Astoria, she took her handwritten work and started writing it on a computer. Six months later, it was a book, she said. “[Queens is] a great place to work and to write because it is so diverse,” she said. “It’s really inspiring that despite the political climate we’re in, where there’s allegations that being surrounded by immigrants makes life dangerous, it actually makes life beautiful. It’s touching to see how well and how peacefully everyone interacts. I wish more people could come here to see how it really is.” Lee appreciates the artistic community in western Queens. “It’s really a wonderful borough because people are all facing the same challenges — nobody’s got a tremendous platform or millions of dollars to do everything they’d like to do with their art,” Lee said. “There’s a real sense of community because all we really have is each other.” This month, Lee and her writing partner have a screenplay taking part in IFP Film Week, which is a gathering of people in the film industry, to try to get funding for the project. Lee describes the screenplay as a “female-centric buddy horror comedy.” Additionally, Lee has another novel on the way. “Love Her Madly” is available in bookstores (including the Astoria Bookshop), some Target stores, and online at Amazon and bn.com. INTERIOR DESIGN

Photos courtesy of Peter Valcarcel

ASTORIA BY DESIGN BY KATRINA MEDOFF

I

nterior designer Peter Valcarcel has called his Astoria apartment home for more than a decade, and as you’d expect from someone of his profession, he has made it his own — using almost exclusively locally bought materials. Many pieces of furniture come from The Furniture Market on 23rd Street and Astoria Boulevard; he bought his sofa at the Salvation Army on Steinway Street; and he found side tables on the street. He also designs home accessories such as one-of-a-kind porcelain plates, rugs that are homemade in his home country of Peru, and throw pillows. He frequents fabric stores on 30th Avenue, where he

@KatrinaMedoff

@katya_m22

finds “obscure, special” fabrics for his pillow collection. “Living in Astoria has been an inspiration for me,” Valcarcel said. “It’s a place that I call home, and it’s a place that has afforded me [the opportunity] to experiment in my style. And because I have discovered fabulous things in stores and sometimes on the streets, I have been able to develop and figure out what my style is as an interior designer. That is one of the great things about Astoria in my personal experience. I like the fusion that it has of so many different cultures in one very, very small area.” Valcarcel was born in Lima, Peru — he SEPTEMBER 2016 I BOROMAG.COM I 45

INTERIOR DESIGN moved to New York at age 17 — and he has little pieces from his culture scattered throughout his apartment. For example, in Peruvian high society, Valcarcel explained, every household has a pair of silver fighting cocks that come in an ashtray. Normally the birds are very big and one would put them on the dining table, a tradition that he calls “very old-fashioned.” His mother gave him a gift of smaller birds without the tray, which Valcarcel says seem more contemporary and less like a piece that would belong in an oldfashioned Peruvian house. They sit on his coffee table. Valcarcel also has two pairs of shoemak46 I BOROMAG.COM I SEPTEMBER 2016

er forms (an adult pair and a baby pair) that he found in a little market in Peru. “When I’m in other cities, I try to visit as many flea markets as possible,” Valcarcel said. Here in New York City, he’ll go to flea markets in Chelsea and a thrift shop on Steinway Street in Astoria. He also loves visiting the enormous antique shops in Pennsylvania. While at these markets, he shops both for himself and for other projects that he is working on. When he designs his own and others’ apartments, he starts with looking at the space. “When I walk into a space, I look at the architecture of the space itself, and that to me determines what you’re going to do

with the space,” he said. “In [my apartment], there’s not truly architectural value to the space, so it needed to be much more casual. There aren’t beautiful moldings or beautiful windows. Even though it’s a very nice apartment, it’s a very simple apartment.” His style is “very eclectic,” he said. “I think it has a touch of modern mid-century, but it’s very much mixed with much more traditional things. I like very earthy tones, and because of the way the apartment felt when I moved in, it does have a sort of summer cottage feel to it.” He asks clients what they want to do in a room and then works from there. “For me, interior design is function and

beauty, and the function for my apartment is to have people over,” he said. “So I wanted to create areas where people will be able to sit down and have a conversation.” Valcarcel went to school for art — he originally wanted to be a painter — and started his career in visual merchandizing and fashion. He then worked in home departments of stores such as Barneys, Calvin Klein, and SeaCloth in Connecticut. One of his clients asked Valcarcel to design her apartment, and that’s how he began to make the transition to residential work. “I thought, ‘Oh, wow — this is what I should be doing,’” he said. He’s been able to take lessons he

learned from his work in home departments and translate them to his interior design. For example, around his apartment, framed pieces of artwork lean against the walls. “That’s something that I learned at Calvin Klein: just leaning things,” Valcarcel said. “I find it a little more casual, and sometimes they cover things.” He pointed to one framed piece of artwork leaning in the hallway. “In this case, it’s covering the wire.” Valcarcel’s hallway holds a small selection of his personal photos. “I like to have pictures only in one place,” he said. “So I always determine one space in the apartment or in the home as the gallery, and that’s where I’ll have personal pictures.” Valcarcel’s apartment might look to any visitor as if it’s a finished product, but the interior designer likes to always be changing things in his space. “Things need to have a life span, and then you need to move on to something else,” he said. “A place that is not toughed or utilized well is a space that dies.” So, despite all the work he has put into making his apartment his own, the only thing he couldn’t part with is his matching pair of mid-century, horn-style chairs. “If there is a fire in my apartment, I will carry these two chairs on my back all the way down the stairs,” Valcarcel said. “I would save these two chairs — the rest can go.” SEPTEMBER 2016 I BOROMAG.COM I 47

BARBECUE in Astoria & LIC By Sean Curry If you’ve been paying attention, you can’t help but notice all the barbecue spots popping up all around the city. From classics like Dinosaur Bar-B-Que to upstarts like Mighty Quinn’s, NYC’s in a barbecue craze. While Brooklyn, the Bronx and Manhattan

are all seeing their fair share of slow-roasted fare, you don’t have to leave our happy borough to sample some smoked meats. There’s a grilling revolution happening right in New York’s stunning Queens backcountry. Pull up a stool, tie up a bib, and make sure you’re wearing your stretchy pants — Queens-style barbecue is here.

Strand Smokehouse If you’re looking for books, you’ve come to the wrong Strand. But if you’re looking for beers, bourbons and beef, then buddy, sidle on up to the filling station — you’re among friends. The Strand Smokehouse on Broadway is one of the only places in Astoria you can watch New York sports while listening to live bluegrass and country music, and it simply has the best brisket in the neighborhood. Sliced while you watch and served by the pound, the brisket is tender, juicy and mindblowingly delicious. If brisket’s not your style, try the wings or the Flintstones-sized short ribs. Generous sides of mac ‘n’ cheese and cornbread and a fantastic bourbon selection mean the Strand isn’t just some of the best barbecue in Astoria — it’s a little piece of Texas scooped up and plopped down in western Queens.

Butcher Bar With so much barbecue arising in New York over the past five years, at what point will new spots stop trying to bring Carolina-, Texas- or Georgia-style barbecue to the Big Apple and start claiming New York-style barbecue for their own? Butcher Bar on 30th Avenue thinks they’re leading that trend. Incorporating influences from Austin, Kansas City, Missouri and the Carolinas, pitmaster Matthew Katakis and executive chef Orlando Sanchez have blended them all to create, as Katakis calls it, “Astoria Queens smoked barbecue.” If you’re going to go, get there by 6 p.m. to make sure you get the burnt ends — they often sell out by 6:30 or 7. Katakis refuses to freeze anything so that he can guarantee freshness, and as such, they sometimes sell out of the best stuff. But the burnt ends — or “meat candy” as they call it — make it worth your while to arrive early. If you get to Butcher Bar too late and miss out on the burnt ends, the Monster Burger has you covered. Fifty percent brisket, 50 percent pulled pork, and topped with habanero sauce, pickles, cole slaw and more, the Monster is a beast of a beef patty.

MexiBBQ

FOOD

If you want to venture into barbecue but can’t let go of your precious margarita straw, look no further than MexiBBQ on 30th Avenue. It’s everything you love about barbecue wrapped up in a soft tortilla and served with salsa. If there’s a better place to celebrate Taco Tuesday, we haven’t heard of it. Head out for the tacos and margs, but MexiBBQ’s brunch menu is where they really shine. Unlimited mimosas and an impressive beer selection make this spot’s Saturday morning sidewalk game one that’s not to miss. Don’t sleep on the Hangover Cure — chilaquiles with crispy tortilla strips, sliced chicken breast, pico de gallo and salsa.

Carioca Grill What style of barbecue do you want to try tonight? Texas? Carolina? Kentucky? How about a little south of the border? No, more south. Like, way south. Carioca Grill on Broadway is Brazilianstyle rodizio barbecue translated into beautiful buffet glory. The line at this underappreciated South American gem is usually short, but don’t think for a second it’s because of the food. Load up your plate with rice, beans and veggies, then head to the grill master for your choice of meats fresh off the fire. Make sure to grab the churrasco, rotisserie cooked right in front of your eyes.

John Brown You might not have seen John Brown Smokehouse during your weekend jaunts through LIC, as it’s a touch off the beaten path on 44th Drive off of 11th Street. But the extra block or two is worth the walk for the mind-blowing food and gorgeous back garden you’ll find there.

John Brown isn’t fancy, but everything it lacks in ambience goes right back into the food. It’s Kansas City-style barbecue the way it should be — real people making real food they really love, and nothing more. Stop in for a bite of before heading out on the East River Ferry, or tie up your horse and stay for an afternoon. The staff is nothing if not welcoming. Everyone goes for the ribs, but leaves raving about the burnt ends.
