CH-CH-CH-CHANG STREET STYLE
Sweet Chris (@chrisschilling) said his style is “modern/formal.” He was apartment hunting in Astoria — in a very stylish look, I might add. His neutral toned polo and slacks paired with leather belt and loafers were fashionforward in a casual way.
Simplicity BY MARIE TORIO

@PHOTOSBYMARIETORIO
s I walked around western Queens hunting for this month’s most stylish Astorians, I noticed that many locals were keeping their style on the simple side, while others looked fun and flirty. Even the seemingly simple looks were surprisingly unique, like classic flats made modern with a distinctive shape or a button-up that, on closer inspection, had an elephant print. I spotted solid polos, a great chambray dress, feminine pleats, a fedora and funky prints. These looks managed to beat the heat and humidity while turning heads on the streets.
Community organizer Elizabeth was on her way to get coffee. She describes her style as “eclectic.” Her pleated dress with a bold print and flats caught my attention. Her personality was just as cute as her outfit!

Yara (@yarafadel), a Chicago resident who was apartment hunting in Astoria, said her style is “bohemian/ hipster.” I loved her chambray shirt dress, kicks, shades and smile. It was stylish in an effortless way, which is why I had to approach her in Starbucks.

Heather (@heathershore09) was on her way to eat dinner at Trestle and catch a movie after. She said her approach to style is whatever is “comfortable.” Her asymmetrical black maxi paired with a turquoise crossbody, aviators and braid came together for a perfect summer date night outfit!
Meagan (@acrossthepondandback), a set designer for “Blue Bloods,” said her style is “casual but fun.” Her strappy sandals, studded crossbody bag, elephant printed top and bold red lip came together for a fun look.
Gena, a merchandise planner, called her style “feminine and sporty.” The combination of her summer dress and white sneaker sandals, a perfect example of a look that’s feminine and sporty at the same time, is exactly what made me approach her.
Nikki, an NYU student and Astoria resident, had just eaten brunch at Queens Comfort when I spotted her. She said her style is “cute/ stylish.” She definitely put together a stylish ensemble with her T-strap shoes, flirty yellow printed dress and fedora.

his month, we asked you to tag us (@boromagazine) in your Instagram pictures of sweets in Astoria, Long Island City and Sunnyside. From delicious-looking baked goods — don’t the cookies by @itsbritsbatch look divine!? — to birthday cake in the park, this month’s photo submissions definitely made our mouths water. Pets even got in on the action: a dog got a taste of a doughnut, and a bird enjoyed soft-serve by the East River! Here are some of our favorite submissions.

s soon as you step into Andy Yanni and Meghan Gaber’s Astoria apartment, you know they are designers at heart. From the light green tufted sofa and color-coordinated bookshelves, to refurbished vintage furniture and framed photos of their wedding ceremony in the woods, every part of the space allows you to learn different aspects of their personalities and lifestyle — without even meeting them. This type of “storytelling through design” is an essential belief that the couple hopes to bring to other homes in Astoria through
their new design company, Little Design Shoppe & Creative Co., along with fellow team member and longtime Astoria resident Katie Rosenblatt. But home design is actually only a sliver of what this group can do. Little Design Shoppe offers a wide range of services including interior, event, stationery and furniture design. “Things we have experience in and things that bring us joy, we want to offer to other folks,” Yanni said. It all technically began when Yanni and Gaber met attending NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts in 2008 — with Yanni studying set design and Gaber studying costume design — but the true root of the group’s passions can be traced back even further, to their childhoods. DESIGN
Gaber grew up taking art classes and fondly recalls creating elaborate slumber parties (complete with custom invitations) for her friends. Yanni describes himself as the kid who “wanted to go to Costco to get the newest coloring set” instead of playing video games like other children his age. He also had a habit of rearranging the house whenever his parents were away. And Rosenblatt always lent a hand organizing school dances and even planned town parades in her hometown of Allentown, PA. After college, Gaber worked in the wardrobe department of Broadway shows like “The Lion King” and “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical,” and Yanni worked at different interior and event design firms that were more corporately focused. They had learned what a good team they made when working together on shows at NYU — but it was when they
got engaged in 2014 that they realized how to turn their teamwork and passions into the next phase of their careers. “I used to always joke that if theater didn’t work out for me I’d be a wedding planner, but it wasn’t until we starting designing the wedding that I was like, ‘Wow, I really love this. I could actually do this for a living,’” Gaber said. Gaber designed the entire invitation suite, including a colorful fold-out-map invite and save-the-date, which was so well-received by guests that other friends began requesting her work. This led to the custom stationary sector of Little Design Shoppe — which you may even see in local shops soon with a line of cards and stationery featuring Queens and New York staples. Rosenblatt, who worked in the event department of Marriott Hotels for 11

years, always knew she wanted to be on the “other side” of her business (more production instead of hosting), and through a mutual friend began talking to Yanni and Gaber about bringing her operations and logistics experience to help drive the event side of Little Design Shoppe. “Whether it's your baby shower, a wedding, a rehearsal dinner, we always ask: how are we going to tailor this to really be about you?” Rosenblatt explained. “Just because every other wedding or shower you’ve been
to has gone one way, doesn’t mean we have to do it that way. We can do it more untraditionally in order to really tell your story.” The storytelling theme that carries through all aspects of the design company’s work derives mostly from Yanni and Gaber’s theater background, where the process is essential. “Storytelling is such an important aspect of theater, especially set design,” Yanni explained. “You’re creating an entire world for the characters in a play. But in real life, you’re doing it for someone
who is going to live there, evolve there, have kids there, etc.” This collaborative element is very important to the Little Design Shoppe team — they want to get to know their clients and lifestyles well to make sure the designs work for them, which involves a process slightly different (and more hands-on) than that of other design firms. A Little Design Shoppe client begins by taking an 100-question test that Yanni said “digs down into the nitty gritty of who they are.”

DESIGN
“We worked with a creative writer friend to develop questions that help ‘unlock the keys’ to a story so we can figure out who you are from every sense,” he continued. “Things like, how do you enter and exit your house? What is the first thing you do when you get home? Do you eat dinner at a dining table or coffee table? Aesthetics are sometimes the last things we look at.” Then the team moves into schematic design, which include collecting all of that research and boiling it down into floor plans, sketches and storyboards to share a series of different design directions for the client. They even have an activity where they lay out all of their images

and plans on the floor and the client can “step into” the different aspects of design, choosing what they like and dislike. Next they move into design development, including the selection of pieces and accessories — or, for an event, getting into the day-of flow, communication with vendors, etc. Then it comes time for production management — getting everything built and running on schedule — and then finally, creating the space. The team is also different in the sense that they like to take things a little more slowly, allowing people to sit in the space and see how everything works and feels for them. One of Little Design Shoppe’s first

clients was Astoria resident Erin Black, who needed help completing a total gut renovation and third floor addition to her traditional Astoria row house. “Andy, Meghan and the team have been amazing in both helping me define my aesthetic and determine a way to make the space not only beautiful, but totally functional for a family with four young children,” she said. “No small feat with less than 2,000 square feet! “I feel like my home really tells the story of my family — from the entry way with ample cubbies and storage, a vintage 1900s stadium bench we found together at a resale shop, and artwork my 12-year-old daughter painted in her after school class — to the bedrooms that somehow incorporate every silly thing my children requested and still look chic.” From starting at the gut renovation level and working with architects and contractors, to choosing furniture and accessories, to organizing the home once it’s complete — Little Design Shoppe can come in at various parts of the process, and having clientele mostly in Astoria has allowed them to become experts in small spaces and even rentals. “We’re always figuring out how people use their space in day-to-day life, and how to make it so their space works for that,” Gaber said. “And we want people to know that just because you’re renting, doesn't mean there aren’t changes you can make that will make the space more enjoyable.” This can also include coming into a home after it is finished and curating bookshelves, organizing closets and pantries — making sure the space is truly livable for the client and, above all, tells the story of their life.

FOOD + DRINK
COFFEE & COMMUNITY By DANIEL GROGAN
The first thing I noticed when I walked into Higher Grounds café was a photo and two plaques on the right wall of the entryway. The photo showed Richard Sclafani – a New York City firefighter and Queens native who tragically died in the line of duty on Jan. 23, 2005. The picture was one of Richard walking handsomely in his FDNY uniform and the plaques told the story of his bravery.
T
his tribute to a local hero and dear friend of the Higher Grounds owners illustrates the kind of café they set out to create: a place that not only serves the neighborhood, but also celebrates it. The owners, Michael and Karen Ferguson and their daughter Caitlyn, lived in Astoria all their lives, so there was never any doubt as to where they wanted to open their small business. Once they decided that they would put Caitlyn Ferguson’s many years of training as a barista to good use, they were off to the races. Michael Ferguson, who renovated the entire shop along with a friend of his, was eager to get fresh coffee into the hands of Astorians as quickly as possible. “I killed myself getting this place open,” he said. “We got it done in 45 days. I couldn’t believe it!” And the haste with which the café was completed is made all the more impressive once you’ve experienced Higher Grounds’ wonderful interior atmosphere. Natural light pours in through the garage door storefront (which is often left open when the weather is kind) and illuminates
28
the café’s entryway, with its multi-toned, wood-paneled walls and rustic tabletops. As you move through the shop, past the large marble countertop displaying baked goods galore, the natural light subtly fades away. The slight dimming accentuates the coziness of the back area: a communal bench wraps around the wall, throw pillows are nestled in each corner and a glass chessboard sits atop a table, waiting to be played. Though unfamiliar to me, the space felt like home. There was an easy comfort in that corner reminiscent of the back porch of a farm house at dusk. It was in this corner that I drank my coffee: an iced La Colombe Pure Black. The La Colombe, along with their Draft Latte, comes straight from the tap, and the product is about as smooth and fresh as one could want from a cup of joe. Those looking for a beverage that is a bit more involved should rest easy knowing that the complex concoctions come straight from the mind of Caitlyn Ferguson, whose love for all things coffee is very apparent. “I’ve always loved making coffee. Even when I worked for other people I always felt like I was working on my machine, and now it actually is my machine,” she said.
SEPTEMBER 2018
“It’s really nice to now be able to do it for us. It’s actually ours.” Along with the many drink options, Higher Grounds boasts a large menu of grab-and-go food items, including popular offerings from Melt Bakery, and Single Girl Cookies prepared by Astoria’s own Renee Heitmann. In the coming weeks, the Higher

Grounds owners hope to expand their menu by crafting food in house, such as wraps, salads and perhaps even freshly baked soft pretzels. Caitlyn Ferguson explained to me that the free space on the walls would soon be decorated with the art of local creators, from photographers to painters to
illustrators. They’ll begin by showing off the works of their creative friends in the hopes that other neighborhood talents looking for a place to showcase their material will reach out to them. This, of course, harks back to their desire to create a community hearth. Having only just opened on July 30, the Fergusons have already done a lot to accomplish this goal: they have featured live music from neighborhood bands and professional face painting for children. “The response has been great,” Michael Ferguson said. “People tell us how happy they are to have a place like this, how happy they are when they hear the music.” In addition to the fun events that regularly take place at the café, the space is also available for private functions. Michael and Caitlyn Ferguson are entirely hands-on with the day-to-days of Higher Grounds, and all the while they continue to brainstorm new ways to celebrate the community that they love through their business. “All we want to do is bring a good product to the area with the best service we can provide,” Michael Ferguson said. “Everyone is welcome.” SEPTEMBER 2018 I BOROMAG.COM

Modern Spaces in Long Island City CELEBRATES 10TH ANNIVERSARY BY JENNA BAGCAL
T
@JENNA_BAGCAL
hose familiar with the world of real estate have probably heard the name Modern Spaces — the well-known company celebrated its 10 year anniversary this past July. But according to the CEO, president and co-founder, Eric Benaim, its good reputation and high acclaim is not something that happened overnight. Prior to his career in real estate, Benaim was the owner of a live event production and marketing firm that concentrated on Manhattan luxury sales. But as time went on, he realized the untapped potential in the Queens real estate market, particularly in Long Island City. In 2006, he sold over 50 residences in the burgeoning neighborhood. In late July of 2008, Benaim and his business partner Ted Kokkoris started Modern Spaces in the midst of the economic crisis. They opened their first office at 47-42 Vernon Blvd. and ran their business without a website for the first few months. Soon after they established the business, Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy resulting in hardships for Benaim's company. "It seemed like the world was going to end," Benaim said.
32
Following the crash, the LIC resident said that the company experienced a "dark winter" where he recalled they had "no money in the bank." They borrowed money from family in order to sustain their business and keep up with costs. During their first year, the company's focus was on selling walk-up apartments and Benaim said that the company did not make a profit for the first couple of years. But things started looking up in early 2009 after they were approached
SEPTEMBER 2018
by Powerhouse Condominiums. "They gave us 60 units to rent out, which we happily took," Benaim said. Within three months they had sold all the units Powerhouse gave them. Since its inception, Modern Spaces has increased from two to three agents to over 100 and has secured over 70 percent of LIC's market share. The full-service company is involved in all aspects of the real estate process including predevelopment consulting, staging and selling properties.
ty Y
Over the last few years, he estimates they've distributed over 1,000 bags to kids, reflecting the population increase in America's fastest growing neighborhood. With the changing neighborhood and demographic shift, Benaim shares that it's time for Modern Spaces to rebrand itself. "Ten years ago, 'modern' meant something different. The demographics at the time were people in their 20s and 30s," he said. "Now the demographics are people in their 20s, 30s and 40s." He also notes the increase in property price, with the average unit selling for $600,000 10 years ago versus $1.2 million in
Photo courtesy of Modern Spaces
To date, they have completed over $5 billion in sales, with $1 billion in sales occurring over the past year. Benaim confirms that the company has approximately 4,000 units in the pipeline that they are currently working on. Now, the company has expanded from its one office in Long Island City into Astoria, Manhattan and Brooklyn. Benaim's reasoning for establishing offices in different neighborhoods is to integrate the company into the communities which it serves. "If we're good to the community, the community will be good to us," he said. Benaim has been active in the Long Island City community over the past 10 years and is informally known as the "Mayor of LIC." In addition to Modern Spaces, Benaim also serves on the board of directors for the Long Island City Partnership and started the annual LIC Halloween parade. He recalled that during the first year of the parade, which he started with Gianna Cerbone-Teoli, Raquel Navas-Salas and Sheila Lewandowski, they gave out about 80 treat bags to 80 children with Modern Spaces business cards stapled on them.
the present day. The company's rebranding will involve a shift to a more "elevated" look, according to Benaim, who adds that they will be opening up their new 8,000-squarefoot headquarters in Long Island City by the end of this year.

nce you’ve been crowned the “Doughnut King” by Gordon Ramsay, it’d be a crime to do anything else. At least that’s how Chef “Scottish” Francis Legge (“Scottish” is also a name Ramsay gave him), partner and chef at the new doughnut shop Sugar & Water on 23rd Ave., feels. Legge competed on FOX’s “MasterChef” four years ago and won the doughnut challenge with his Guinness Prosciutto Doughnut, a signature offering at the new shop. Since his time on the show, Legge has been making doughnuts in Astoria primarily, his most recent endeavor being at Gossip Coffee on 30th Avenue. But when he met a group of locals who were starting their own sweet shop focused on custom doughnuts, it seemed like the stars aligned. “It’s become this experience of being at the right place at the right time with the right people and, most importantly, creating the right doughnuts,” he said. “It’s the ultimate fruition of who I was on the show, coming together to do this.” Sugar & Water was created by six Astoria friends who grew up together in the neighborhood, and whom Legge joined a few short months ago. One of the partners is Paris Asprou, who also owns Mia’s Bakery in Brooklyn. The shop brings in Mia’s signature cakes every day, but the team was also looking to make something fresh on premises. “We wanted to bring something new to the neighborhood with a sweet shop,” Asprou said. “And we knew the neighborhood loved Mia’s cakes so we wanted to bring those in, but we still wanted to give the community something that we baked in-house … together we all came up with the idea of doughnuts.” Besides just the ability to bake them fresh every day, there is also a familial connection to doughnuts from one of the other partners, Athena Angel. Angel’s grandfather

donut, a yeast donut and a “dossant” — their version of the infamous “cronut.” They’ll then offer an additional six to seven speciality flavors that day — which could include anything from fruit-inspired takes like banana cinnamon, chocolate cherry or strawberry shortcake, to candy-centered flavors like Snickers, M&M and Reese’s Cup. And fall fanatics, have no fear: the shop is already perfecting their pumpkin spice and apple cider doughnuts for the season. But, it isn’t all as simple as sugar and water. Legge says his favorite part about making donuts is that, because of the yeast, it’s a “live thing.” “You’re dealing with another entity,” he said. “It’s not like any other food. “It’s nerve-wracking to make doughnuts from scratch — you have to be one with the
dough and you have all of these millions of yeast. It’s very complex and scientific … it’s way more than just a doughnut and sugar … it’s way more than just sugar and water.” The team wanted to keep the community involved in this process, so you’ll often find Legge right behind the counter, feeding doughnuts through their Donut Robot® nicknamed “Doughlores” and explaining the process to customers in his friendly Scottish brogue and upbeat manner. Or perhaps behind the cake display case in his kitchen, testing the best types of vanilla, making custom salt blends or soaking cacao nibs in Macallan, which he’ll roast later for a new doughnut flavor. “Most doughnut places hide this process — we want to show it,” he said. The shop, right next to The Bonnie and near the Ditmars subway stop, is bright and cheery. A signature teal blue covers the interior, along with bursts of bright yellow taken from their buzzing bee logo, which Asprou said was chosen since bees are attracted to sugar and water. The name of the business itself comes from the belief held by all team members that “all things sweet in life derive from Sugar & Water.” Photos via Instagram-@sugarandwaternyc

of the cookie, and then put a piece of it on top. We’re always trying to think of new and creative ideas.” Leggge says this kind of ingenuity is also part of their “no waste” policy. “We use all of our ‘waste,’” he said. “We make fritters with the edges of the cakes. We make fillings out of the cakes — there are some days we turn cakes into glazes, or turn them into doughnuts. We use the edges of our ‘dossant’ dough to make ‘critters,’ which is a croissant fritter. We don’t want anything to go to waste.” Sugar & Water is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day—so customers can pick up doughnuts and coffee on their way to work, or stop by if they’re having late night cravings. They’re also now available on GrubHub, in case you want to forgo the selfie wall for savoring sweets in your own home (or bed) instead.

“We chose vibrant colors,” Asprou explained, “because we wanted to have a happy mood, a mood where people meet and are excited about new flavors of sweets. It was all customized and designed by us too…we all put our thoughts together to create this space.” The space also includes a doughnut “selfie wall” for posing — and, with such Instagrammable treats like doughnuts topped with colorful Fruity Pebbles or freshly scorched marshmallows, it’s hard to resist. Collaboration and teamwork were important from the get-go, from designing the space to brainstorming doughnut flavors to running the shop. The group is constantly working to be different from other Astoria locales and put a unique spin on their fare. This can be seen from their coffee offering, which is brewed in percolators, to their unique flavors. “We try to be as innovative as possible with our ideas. See the Rainbow Cookie Doughnut?” Asprou asked, as he pointed to a light pink glazed doughnut topped with a picturesque piece of the traditional Italian dessert layered with pink, yellow and green. “The rainbow cookies come in from Mia’s, then we make a glaze out

SIPS OF CBD
This Astoria restaurant is serving up cannabinoid-infused drinks and munchies BY JENNA BAGCAL
@JENNA_BAGCAL
A new restaurant in Astoria has jumped on the cannabidiol (CBD) bandwagon. Adriaen Block (19-33 Ditmars Blvd.) opened its doors on Wednesday, Aug. 8, serving up a curated selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks and food made with CBD tinctures. This new addition adds to the growing number of CBD and medical marijuana businesses in Queens.

The menu features boozy CBD beverages, with names like Bakin' & Eggs, a combination of Lillet Blanc, Pineau des Charentes, blood orange bitters, egg white and crispy bacon, and Stoney Negroni, made with Cocchi Americano, Tio Pepe dry sherry, Floc de Gascogne and Angostura bitters. There are also cocktails available without CBD, like the eponymous Adriaen Block that combines Cocchi Americano, Madeira, allspice bitters and bay leaf. Those interested in non-alcoholic CBD drinks can sip on Garden & Tonic, a drink made with Seedlip Garden, Indian Tonic and fresh peas, and a blackberry shrub, basil and egg white concoction called Blackberry-Basil Sour. In addition, the restaurant offers up a menu of tasty morsels, which they've appropriately named "munchies." Guests can order plates of thick-cut Nueske’s Bacon, hand-cut steak tartare, cheese and charcuterie boards, as well as Faroe Island wild salmon, a burger and three cuts of steak. An optional CBD sauce is available upon request. Vegetarians can enjoy dishes like Vinetta, a Transylvanian eggplant spread with pita bread and the famous Beyond Burger, a meatless patty served with caramelized onions, plum tomato jam and feta on naan with fries. For dessert, try the molten chocolate cake or key lime pie topped with CBDinfused whipped cream. Zsolt “George” Csonka, the restaurant's owner, worked for The ONE Group in New York City and Las Vegas before opening the Astoria restaurant. He started becoming interested in health and wellness trends, including CBD (cannabidiol) which is a legal THC-free product made from hemp. The owner was fascinated with the benefits of CBD, which reportedly aids with alleviating anxiety, pain and inflammation with no psychoactive side effects or “high” feelings. His focus on health and wellness led the restaurateur to open Adriaen Block, named for the 17th Century Dutch explorer who navigated Hell Gate connecting the East River and Long Island Sound. This time of year is punctuated by tinny, ice cream truck music and late-night Ben & Jerry’s runs to the nearest bodega. And even once the humidity becomes more manageable, ice cream will still be there to tide us over into autumn. Fortunately for folks in Long Island City and Astoria, three new ice cream shops have cropped up this summer. And who can say no to gourmet ice cream with high-quality ingredients and Instagram-ready presentations? Look no further than these three newest additions for decadent desserts guaranteed to make you smile.

An unassuming storefront on the corner of Dutch Kills and Jackson says “Jules Printing & Stationery Co.,” but it’s really a pop-up for the ice cream shop Ice & Vice. “A lot of people walking by tend to think we're really popular for a print shop,” said Ken Lo, one of Ice & Vice’s two owners. “It almost makes it appear like a known secret for LIC. We find it rather charming. It kind of keeps the history with the place, as we try to do that with all of our locations.” While Ice & Vice’s LIC pop-up location opened at the end of June, their flagship store is in the Lower East Side, with a second pop-up in Times Square. And although both Lo and his co-owner, Paul Kim, are originally from Los Angeles, Ice & Vice got its start in Long Island City. “We're returning to our roots,” Lo said. “We first started back at the LIC Flea & Food back in 2013 and 2014.” And Queens seems thrilled by the brand’s homecoming. “An overwhelming number of residents have been requesting we stay permanently in LIC,” Lo said. “[I]t's been great being able to reconnect with the community that we started in.” As for fan favorites, Lo said that their ice cream sandwiches are a big hit, and their best-selling ice cream flavor is Milk Money, which he described as “a toasted milk ice cream with a sea salt chocolate ganache.” One such ice cream sandwich is their Everything B&W Sammie, which features two black-and-white cookies with everything seasoning-flavored ice cream squished in between. But ice cream aficionados should act fast: Ice & Vice’s LIC pop-up may only be open through the end of September. That being said, it sounds like they could be persuaded to stay longer. “With such a positive response coming from the local community, we may consider opening a permanent shop in LIC,” Lo said. “You never know!” SEPTEMBER 2018

Ample Hills Creamery

This recent addition to 30th Avenue is already an Astoria fixture, although it just opened on June 22. The line at Ample Hills often snakes out the door, and it’s difficult to find seating inside. But with flavors like Cookie au Lait, Nonna D’s Oatmeal Lace and Mexican Hot Chocolate, it’s easy to see why. This cult ice cream brand was founded by Brian Smith and Jackie Cuscuna in 2011, per an Ample Hills press release. And its Astoria storefront is just one of 11 Ample Hills outposts, with locations in Brooklyn, Manhattan, Jersey City, Disney’s BoardWalk Inn and Rockaway Beach. “We are thrilled and excited to open our first Ample Hills Creamery in Astoria, Queens!” Smith and Cuscuna posted on the Ample Hills Instagram back in April. “We looked long and hard at many great spaces until we found a perfect corner in an incredibly vibrant community near many of our favorite haunts.” One of Ample Hills’s PR representatives, Account Executive Tavo Dam, said in an email that opening a location in Astoria felt like a natural progression for the ice cream company. And its newest location even boasts an exclusive flavor: Nectar of the Queens, which Dam described as “a smooth cinnamon honey ice cream mixed with pieces of two beloved Greek pastries — baklava and galaktoboureko.” Both of these pastries are baked at Atropolis Bakery, another local institution. Gourmet ice cream and an homage to the neighborhood’s Greek heritage — what more could Astorians want?

Chip Ice Cream Anyone who’s walked by 34th Street and 30th Avenue in the last year has caught the scent of delicious cookies wafting out of Chip NYC. And on July 22, the same team opened a second storefront: Chip Ice Cream, which is located on 31st Avenue and 41st Street and open Tuesday through Sunday, 3 to 10 p.m. Andrea Prunella, Chip’s executive pastry chef, grew up in Queens,

as did the brand’s two owners, Theodore and Peter, whose last names she didn’t disclose. Since they’re from the borough, they know the area and clientele extremely well. “[Astoria is] really becoming a hub for really great ice cream, and we're just really excited to be a part of it,” Prunella said. What’s more, their plans for Chip Ice Cream began taking shape not long after they opened their first set of doors.
“Once we saw that [Chip NYC] was very well-received and successful, we said, ‘OK, well now, what's the next step?’” Prunella recalled. “And after a couple months, we said, ‘We have to pair this with ice cream.’” Their new storefront currently offers soft-serves (which are a a blend of ice cream and Chip cookies) and ice cream sandwiches. Prunella emphasized that all of their menu items incorporate the Chip cookies. “It was very important to us that when you took a bite of the ice
cream, you were reminded of the Chip cookie,” the pastry chef said. “That buttery goodness you get.” And while these dessert concepts aren’t new, Prunella explained that their ingredients set them apart. “Chip is unique because we use cookies that are literally baked fresh in the shop,” she said. “You can smell them in the air.” As for the ice cream itself, Prunella said that it’s very good quality and is sourced from a local distributor. “It's almost like gelato but not quite as thick,” she explained. “It's got a nice aeration to it.”
But ultimately, Chip Ice Cream is all about those delicious, ooey-gooey, homemade cookies. “What's better than pairing cookies and ice cream?” Prunella said. “I mean, it's a match made in heaven.”

Paint the Diamond Pink BY ALLISON KRIDLE

@CONTRALLISON
lashback to grade school when you jumped out of bed on an otherwise lazy Sunday morning. You brushed the cobwebs from your eyes, dusted off your softball cleats and threw on your assigned colored cotton jersey to play some ball. Many of us have these memories from childhood, and some of us still take to the field as adults, relishing the sound of metal hitting a rubber and cork ball. Whether or not you still take part in playing softball or have never played at all, Astorians Kelly Anlas and Sylvia Diaz, cofounders of the fundraising tournament Paint the Diamond Pink (PTDP), provide the opportunity for any female-identifying person to grab a bat for a good cause. “[PTDP] was born of two passions. For me, it was the desire to have a softball game just for women, where players who were new to the sport could learn and play in a supportive environment, and experienced

ballers could flex their muscles in any position on the field,” Anlas said. “[Diaz] saw the opportunity to support a worthy cause. When she was approached with the idea of a women's game, she had already been contemplating ways to raise funds for a friend in AVON 39, the Walk to End Breast Cancer. We both admired the cause and, together, we decided that a women's only softball game was a great way to support it.” Since its conception two years ago, PTDP raised funds for the fight to end breast cancer with AVON 39. However, AVON ended their Walk to End Breast Cancer events this past year, and Anlas and Diaz knew that other organizations would be in need. This year, the duo chose to team up with Breast Treatment Task Force (BTTF), a grassroots organization that helps low-
and moderate-income women in New York City get access to breast care that would otherwise be out of reach for them due to issues of enrollment, eligibility or affordability. “Eighty percent of BTTF patients in need of preventative screenings are between the ages of 26 and 40,” Diaz said. “Those are our friends and neighbors, and while we can never fill the gap left by AVON 39, we are honored to do our part in helping our community through BTTF.” The tournament will include four teams (chosen by Anlas and Diaz), and will be played round-robin style. The games are scheduled to start at 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 23, at Queensbridge Park in Long Island City. “We’re both based in Astoria and love this community, so we want to keep it local. a tournament because we can have two games going at once, and also because it is spacious and convenient for spectators,” Anlas said. Even if you are not interested in playing or missed the registration deadline on Aug. 22, don’t miss out on spectating and entering the raffles with donations from local companies including the Museum of the Moving Image, Locked Escape Room NYC, Alamo Drafthouse,
the McKittrick Hotel (home of the play “Sleep No More”) and personal shopper Natalie Black. If you wish to participate or get involved in any way, get in touch with Anlas or Diaz via Facebook (Facebook. com/paintthediamondpink) or Instagram (@paintthediamondpink). Softball, community and philanthropy is a Sunday well spent. According to Diaz, “PTDP is all about empowerment and charity.”

ake your taste buds on an international journey at a series of food events that are coming to Long Island City this fall. In April 2018, Festival Media hosted a re-imagined one of the most iconic fairs and hosted “The World’s Fare” at Citi Field. Over 10,000 people gathered to advocate for the equality and diversity in the city’s food industry while enjoying a number of exhibits and activities. Following the success of The World’s Fare, Festival Media is putting on two events as part of The World’s Fare Passport Series. The World’s Fare Passport Series will focus on international cuisine. The first event, which will take place on Sept. 22 and 23, will focus on the Americas and highlight Surf ‘n Turf, and the second event, which will take place on Oct. 20 and 21, will highlight Asia and celebrate all things “extra spicy.” Both events will also have access to a beer garden, music and entertainment from a specific region of the world. Each event will take place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 5-25 46th Ave. in Long Island City. Admission is $7 and children ages 10 and under will be admitted for free.
