Dear Western Queens, What better way to bring together a community than through food? When it comes to all the great restaurants and local hangouts in Astoria I don’t think there in one. The 30th Avenue Restaurant Week is something that should be taken advantage of by all our readers. It is a great way to support local business, meet your neighbors and enjoy a variety of restaurants from Butcher Bar to Brooklyn Bagel & Coffee Company. Over 23 restaurants are participating from October 12 to October 21. All you have to do is bring in your favorite magazine, BORO of course, and present it at each establishment to save! Flip through this issue to find all the great offers. October also marks your last chance to take advantage of LIC Flea & Food’s outdoor market. It was a project of mine that I am really proud to have worked on with hundreds of local businesses participating in selling their merchandise and delicious food. Come down any Saturday and Sunday in October. We have special events planned every weekend from a pumpkin patch brought directly by local farmers to a weekend of Japanese culture including food, music and activities. The market will be indoors for the holiday and back outdoors starting next April. Hope to see you there! Josh josh@boromag.com

Frank Arcabascio, President of the 30th Ave Business Association
F
rom Sunday, October 12, through Sunday, October 20, the 30th Avenue Business Association is presenting the second annual 30th Avenue Restaurant Week—with nearly 30 participating restaurants. According to Frank Arcabascio, President of The 30th Avenue Business Association, “it’s no accident we have some of the best restaurants in the area.” In addition to more affordable rent than Manhattan, along with diversity, “Astoria is kind of like a laboratory for start-ups.” Bare Burger, Taverna Kyclades, and Petey’s are just a few examples of restaurants that tested their product and developed a brand in Astoria before branching out to other locations. “Astoria is like the rising tide in the city,” explains Arcabascio. “You’ve got to come in even better than the last. There is no room for mediocrity.”

When asked why the 30th Ave Business Association is putting so much energy into a restaurant week—when they advocate for nearly 1500 businesses in the area—Arcabascio explains, “it’s the trickle down effect. Most restaurants see a wave of customers three times throughout the day, and we all eat several meals each day. We may only get our haircut or go shopping every few weeks or months. Bringing business to the restaurants gets people walking past their neighboring businesses, as well.” From 21st St to 49th St, participating establishments ranging from high-end restaurants, to gastropubs and casual cafes and eateries, will offer deals and discounts to customers. It’s an ideal time for Astorians – in fact, all New Yorkers – to try the diverse foods featured throughout the neighborhood. Unlike Manhattan’s restaurant week, there is no universal set prix fixe necessarily, allowing each establishment to decide what specials and deals they might like to feature on their own, that best showcases their offerings. As John Valentin, a member of The 30th Avenue Business Association who is helping organize the event, says, “there are a lot of new restaurants opening up, and there is something for everybody on 30th Ave.” Gus Lambropoulos, Vice President of The 30th Avenue Business Association, adds, “People from all over the world should experience Astoria at least once!” And what better time than during Restaurant Week?

When I enter The Queens Kickshaw, where she is a barista and bartender, her warm smile shoots at my heart immediately, and I run over to give her a giant hug, even though we have only met once before. As soon as our coffee arrives and I pull out my notebook to ask her about the play we are meeting to discuss, her smile gently softens to a tender one, her eyes light up, and her alto voice intensifies. Her charisma instantly becomes passion, conviction, and authority. When Cameran Hebb first auditioned for keepingabreast, a new play written by Jackie Rosenfeld, she instantly knew this piece of theater was something special. After playing the lead character, Mina, during the play’s premiere at the Cherry Lane Theater as part of the 2012 Fringe Festival, she also knew that the final curtain should not fall on the show after the festival. “The audience kept saying things like, ‘this is the way theater should be done,’” she explains, “and it just confirmed what I already knew.” She immediately envisioned a next life for the play—which opens with a young woman being advised by her doctor to have a mastectomy after failed chemotherapy. The story is told through a series of vulnerable, sometimes sexy, sometimes hilarious, but always poignant vignettes chronicling the woman’s journey to decide what course of treatment is best. Hebb reprises her role as the cancer-stricken lead character, with multiple other roles played in rotation by Lyndsey Anderson and Andy Ingalls—who portray family members, strangers, friends, even a drag queen. The new production is directed by Sharone Halevy
funding. It was at work she saw a post card advertising applications for the grant she eventually received by the QCA.
Upon receiving a startup grant from the Queens Council on the Arts, as well as a sponsorship by Long Island City’s The Secret Theatre, Hebb found herself just a Kickstarter campaign away from breathing new life into the piece—this time with an outreach component (you can still contribute on the kickstarter page). A fundraiser held by The Queens Kickshaw also helped with
The new staging, this time produced by Hebb herself, will run during national Breast Cancer Awareness Month, from October 18th through the 26th. It will be held in the ‘Little Secret’, a 50-seat black box theater that lends itself perfectly to the intimacy of the piece. As an outreach, a select number of seats will be reserved for those in the community suffering or impacted by cancer

who otherwise might not be able to afford tickets. Seats for the public sell for just $15. “I mainly just wanted to open a dialogue,” says Hebb. “In a world where we so easily disconnect, this play pushes past that in way that is so human, alive, and authentic.” The Secret Theatre * 44-02 23rd Street * http://keepingabreast.wix. com/keepingabreast * $15 tickets at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/ event/476212

LIC FLEA
Sew What? One of the most eye-captivating booths at the LIC Food & Flea each weekend belongs to Queensbased designer, Robin Dameshe Shumays. From mirror chips to exotic fabrics utilized in oftentimes whimsical, sometimes even iconic designs, her clothing is inarguably unique, and exemplifies what is so wonderful about having a venue like the LIC Flea to showcase local artists and designers. This issue, we stopped by Robin’s booth for a more in-depth Q&A. BORO: When did you create Henna Flower? Little Wowwa? RDS: I started hennaflower in 2009, though I envisioned the concept long before I started designing. The name comes from a 1957 Egyptian musical called ‘tamr henna’ which means henna flower. I thought that name was the perfect representation of my vision. Henna can be found in India, Africa and the Middle East, and is used for celebrations. The color and the designs are often very rich and ornate. My dresses are definitely reflection of that. In 2010, I gave birth to sweet little girl, and I started making tops and dresses for her. The vision for littlewowwa took shape shortly after. I really see it as an extension of hennaflower. BORO: How long have you been designing? RDS: I’ve been sewing since I was 9 or 10. My mom had a sewing machine. She was self-taught, and she taught me—however, neither of us really knew what we were doing! Through the years I would go through phases of getting back into sewing, but because I didn’t really know a lot, I would give up on it. In 2008, I found a designer, named Sumie Tachibana who lived nearby. Sumie taught private sewing classes, and I started taking lessons with her. Sumie is basically a creative genius, and I learned everything I know from her. 18 | BOROMAG.COM | OCTOBER 2013
BORO: Describe your hennaflower collection in three words. RDS: sexy, edgy, fun BORO: Describe your Little Wowwa collection in three words. RDS: colorful, quirky, unique BORO: What kind of woman wears your dresses? RDS: Really I think a young, worldly woman who likes one-of-a-kind pieces that tell a story....and she has a great sense of play and humor. BORO: In what kind of setting do your dresses best fit? RDS: Definitely an upscale party!
BORO: Your clothes have such a fascinating blend of elements! What inspires the actual silhouettes and designs? What inspired the fabric & textiles you use? RDS: Well, I love Bollywood! I used to be completely obsessed with it. On our third date, I made my now husband, Sami, watch Devdas— which is a 3 hour Bollywood epic! I use a lot of very richly colored iridescent silks, which are a reflection of that. I also love American musicals from 1930-1950s. That is the reason for the pinups prints on some of my littlewowwa pieces. Many of my dresses have 50’s inspired silhouettes including full circle skirts. I also use a lot of denim and African wax prints. The African prints never cease to amaze me. So colorful! Such interesting designs and patterns! BORO: You are also a dancer. What impact does dance have on your creativity when it comes to fashion? RDS: My husband and I run an Arabic music and dance ensemble called Zikrayat, and I am the artistic director. I’ve been studying and performing Middle Eastern dance since 1997. The style I focus on primarily is Egyptian. We have a large ensemble of musicians and dancers that we work with, and we’ve performed for Lincoln Center Out of Doors, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Joe’s Pub. We also performed for the Global Film and Music Festival at William & Mary College, where we did our multimedia show, incorporating vintage films from Egypt. Being a belly dancer is definitely a tremendous influence. Belly dancers love color and bling. Several of my dresses have Swarovski crystals, because I had to have that extra sparkle! BORO: Can you share more about how your daughter serves as the inspiration for littlewowwa? RDS: Absolutely! My daughter inspires me every day. She’s cute, she’s happy, and a bit quirky! Littlewowwa is all about her. I try to bring a bit of her into every design, such as the quirky asymmetrical collars, stuff like that.
BORO: What does the future hold for both lines? RDS: For hennaflower, I would like to do a new collection dedicated to the 80’s. Particularly the movie Purple Rain. For one thing, it turned me into a Prince geek, and that changed my life forever. Next year is the 30th anniversary, which I can hardly believe. I was watching it recently, and the clothes were HOT. I would love to do a tribute to it, but add some crazy, funky, unexpected elements. For littlewowwa, I’m looking to do a 20’s inspired collection, complete with darling little cloche hats! I’ve gotten many requests to add a boys’ line, and I will try, if I can keep up with everything! Both clothing lines are available on Sundays at the LIC Flea, or you can check out the clothing online at www.hennaflower.com.

Milkflower Il Bambino
I’ll toast to that Bread service can be just as essential as any other component of a meal, and when the chef loafs around, it can be pretty crumby. When creativity reigns supreme, however, diners get a nibble at the upper crust. Luckily, toast is no longer just for diner breakfasts or bruschetta before pasta. A few local spots have amped up their approach, featuring some mouthwatering twists on a dinner table staple. Il Bambino (34-08 31st Ave) has been the longtime crostini king in the neighborhood, featuring one of the most diverse and eclectic selections of tasty toast points around. From truffled egg salad with speck, to duck confit with blue cheese and diced apples, to crumbled potato chips atop mushroom truffle

butter and parmesan—the menu boasts twenty-five varieties, featuring imported charcuterie and local produce and cheese. You can even order a PuPu Platter with any 6 crostini for just $18. Making them just 3 bucks a piece, it’s one of the best deals around. Chef Yair Lenchner has introduced a whole new line of gourmet toasts at Milkflower (34-12 31st Ave), selling at just $4 a piece. A total of four toasts are featured at brunch, including a jazzed-up croque madame with gruyere, crispy prosciutto, and a sous vide poached egg dressed with scallions and peppercorn. Another is adorned with white fig and cloumage cheese, and yet another with braised leeks, crispy diced chorizo, shaved egg,
and a drizzle of chorizo oil. Master technique meets tantalizing flavor combinations for some starters that might just possibly steal the show. While the kangaroo burger with the lot and other aussie dishes may take the spotlight at The Thirsty Koala (35-12 Ditnars Blvd), the crostini are the ideal way to start off a down under dinner. Kakadu plums are scattered like confetti with bits of prosciutto, a slather of homemade goat cheese, kalamata tapenade, shallots, and a drizzle of luxurious balsamic glaze. Another favorite is the Noosa Head, like an Australian bagel with lox, only the schmear is goat cheese with dill and a cucumber-pineapple salsa.

Viva La Comida! 2013
26 | BOROMAG.COM | OCTOBER 2013
If there was ever any doubt that Elmhurst/Jackson Heights is one of the most vibrant pockets of cultural diversity in the city, that argument was joyously laid to rest this past Friday as thousands of visitors gathered on 82nd Street between Roosevelt and Borden to celebrate this year’s Viva La Comida Festival. A food, music, culture, and craft festival, Viva La Comida magnetically drew together vendors, food trucks, artists, and performers showcasing everything from arepas and monolithic tortas, to Venezuelan street food, Himalayan momos, Indian curries, and Irish specialties. From dance competitions to an interactive street fair, to colorful pop-up stands amidst the established storefronts of the street. Organized by the 82nd Street Partnership—with food trucks chosen by local street food guru, Jeff Orlick—the festival was a delicious success. Here are some images in cased you missed it.

Flushing’s Soup Sliders
A
Story + Photos Bradley Hawks
nibbling a tiny hole into the side of the dumpling, allowing the broth to gently trickle into the ladle. Instantly, you have a spoonful of luscious soup, and a seafood meatball dumpling ready to devour. Slurp the broth, then dunk the dumpling into the accompanying vinegar and ginger dip. Consume, grin, and repeat.
s the autumn chill gradually grows in the air, so too does the desire for warm comfort foods. While a whole steaming bowl of soup may still be just a bit too much, why not try a slider version? Sound absurd? Then you probably ought to hop on the seven train to the Nan Xiang Dumpling House in Flushing, where patrons swear by some of the most popular soup dumplings in the entire city. Dumpling meatballs are hand rolled and suspended in aspic, chilled, and then packed into paper thin wrappers fresh to order, twisted at the top into palm-sized giftwrapped teardrops that arrive at the table in baskets piping hot from the steamer, which transforms the aspic into a complex, rich broth. My favorite is the crab and pork version, like a miniature surf and turf, which sell for just $6.50 for six dumplings.
28 | BOROMAG.COM | OCTOBER 2013
There are several YouTube videos that demonstrate proper technique, but no matter how many times I eat a soup dumpling, I still get excited and nervous. Warning: the broth in these little guys is extremely hot. It is best to tenderly pluck a dumpling by the top, hold the empty soup ladle just beneath your chin, all while
While the dumplings are exceptional— Nan Xiang also serves excellent fried pork dumplings (similar to Japanese gyoza), steamed vegetable dumplings (bursting with garden fresh vegetables), and even Shanghai shao mai (translucent thimbles stuffed with rice, pork, and mushrooms—the full menu holds a variety of other hidden gems worthy of notice. Hint: do not feel rushed when ordering. The servers will immediately approach your table for an order, without even offering a menu. Observe around
you a dining room packed with locals who sometimes even order as they are sitting down. But if you ask for a menu for perusal, the staff gladly adjusts the pace of service accordingly. On one of my visits, an elderly Chinese couple next to me ordered as they were seated, and food arrived within minutes. When I leaned over to ask if this was their favorite place in the neighborhood, they laughed, explaining—in a thick southern accent—that they had just arrived from Texas an hour ago. Several friends had told them Nan Xiang needed to be their first stop, and had instructed them on precisely what to order. Following their lead, I tried the turnip puffs, like a savory Chinese miniature counterpart to the Italian sfogliatelle. Where the Italians use custard, these layered Chinese pastries are filled with shredded daikon, minced vegetables, and tiny cubes of pork—then crusted in sesame seeds and baked to golden brown. Other favorites include the salty sticky rice roll—stuffed with a fried cruller, salty pork
floss, and house pickles—as well as the fried rice cakes, like Chinese gnocchi diagonally sliced into coins, then sautéed in a rich brown gravy with vegetables and tender slices of beef. Sample a few dishes, then return to sample some more. Items range in price from $1.25 to $9.95 for the seafood crispy rice noodles, should you decide to splurge. But be sure to
start with a soup dumpling, because the best things sometimes really do come in small packages. Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao 38-12 Prince St, Flushing 11354 (718) 321-3838 http://www.nanxiangusa.com open daily from 8 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. OCTOBER 2013 | BOROMAG.COM | 29

As the first in the 3rd Space Series by the Queens Council on the Arts, local writer Audrey Dimola will be hosting a Literary Town Hall in the middle of the month. We conducted a little Q&A to found out how to get involved, and just what participants can look forward to on October 18th.
hope to see in the near future, what we’re excited about, how we can collaborate on new projects.
How did the collaboration come about with the Queens Council on the Arts? I’ve had the pleasure of knowing quite a few wonderful QCA folks over my years of working in local media and participating in Queens culture. I came by to see the new space and bounce some ideas around with Lynn Lobell and Zoe Rabinowitz, who are always so helpful - and the Town Hall idea came about on the spot! It was later decided to be the first event in their new 3rd Space series.
What is the date, time, location of the Literary Town Hall? Friday, October 18th from 6:30-8:30pm at the new Queens Council on the Arts space in Astoria at 37-11 35th Ave (entrance on 37th St). What inspired you to create the Town Hall? In 2012 and 2013 especially, there has been so much growth in our literary community - local reading series thriving, relaunching, and emerging; the publication of our first formal literary journal (Newtown Literary); of course the two new bookstores opening in Astoria, and so on. As a native Queens poet, journalist, and curator I feel so lucky to be a part of this community and all the amazing people it has brought me in contact with. I basically wanted the Town Hall to bring all the pieces together - celebrate, spread the word, make the opportunities known, and connect everyone involved so that our community can keep expanding and evolving. What can participants expect? Part performance, part soapbox, and part networking! The Queens literary organizations involved (including reps from Boundless Tales, First Tuesdays, Oh Bernice!, Astoria Bookshop, Enigma Bookstore, Newtown Literary, and more) will either present original work and/or speak about what they do and how people can get involved. Attendees will be able to meet the reps from these organizations, connect with fellow writers and lit lovers, and discuss the literary community in Queens - what we 32 | BOROMAG.COM | OCTOBER 2013

Writers Wanted!
queenscouncilarts.org with 3rd Space as the subject for more info! Do you anticipate this being the first Town Hall of more to come? I’d love to do something like this every so often in an effort to keep our literary community connected. Our borough is so widespread and often we artists are working on projects and fostering little pockets of culture - completely unbeknownst to each other. Being a writer can also be a somewhat solitary endeavor at times, so I feel it’s really important for us to reach out to each other and share our creative journeys.
Who can participate, and how?
What are some of your favorite local literary organizations?
Anyone can RSVP to attend the Literary Town Hall! But you can also look into hosting or being a part of a future 3rd Space event. Now that QCA has a great space in an easily accessible Queens location, they’re offering artist-led performance and exhibition opportunities on the third Friday of the month. Email info@
Boundless Tales in Astoria will always be close to my heart - it was the first ongoing reading series I read for in Queens, and I’ve been deeply involved ever since. Attending First Tuesdays in Jackson Heights is also always a really incredible experience - their open mic is authentic Queens! You get people from every age and background
coming to share their own words or some of their favorites, ranging from truly moving to downright hilarious. How would you describe the community of writers in Western Queens? Real! They’re friendly, they’re gritty, they’re brave, they’re beautiful. They are so fantastically diverse in every way and I’m constantly floored by the people I meet and the performers I see, which is why I feel so strongly about doing all I can to help keep the
community alive and kickin’ in a positive way. We’re all out there - we just have to connect! On a personal level, what about the neighborhood inspires your writing? Queens is in my blood - I was born and raised in Astoria/LIC and everywhere I look is a precious memory or a new adventure waiting to unfold. I also just love that Queens has the ever-inspiring mix of urban settings and natural spaces - individual worlds to explore in each neighborhood.
Do you have any favorite local ‘spots’ to write? I’m constantly scribbling something, somewhere - in pen in notebooks, sharpie on walls, chalk on sidewalk, and even poem stickers stuck around the city. But if I had to pick - sitting on rocks on the shore of the East River in Socrates Sculpture Park, looking out onto moving water, buildings, and sky. BODY & SOUL
The Healing Touch Story hayley bridgewater
Autumn is upon us, and with it brings a time for reflection, assessment, appreciation, and renewal. It is my favorite season, and one that causes many of us to step back, slow down, and start to formulate plans and changes for the upcoming year. My year has been quite the rollercoaster, and though I have long been a big believer in alternative therapies such as yoga, acupuncture, and meditation to stay ‘self aware’, I have been encouraged by many people in my life to reach out in other directions for some guidance. And several of those suggestions pointed me in the direction of the lovely Luz Milagros Arpino. I must disclose that I know Luz from the physical fitness world, as she is an incredible trainer, teacher, and mentor. I have often left her classes with little bits of life wisdom that play over and over in my head. Because of this “sticking power”, something was telling me I needed to interview her about her therapy work. While there is really no substitute for experiencing her in person, I hope the interview below gives you a little glimpse into some exciting alternative therapies she provides in Western Queens. What kind of healing modalities are you trained in? Could you provide a little background information on them? I am a Peruvian Pachakuti Mesa Holder, certified in Mayan Electromagnetic Rebalancing, a Level 2 Reiki Practitioner, and a Spirit Drum Medicine holder. I perform Maori Joint work and “Illumination” Journey Dance medicine.
36 | BOROMAG.COM | OCTOBER 2013
How would you describe your training? I began my training in Peruvian Medicine under the tutelage of Olivia Olkowski, a shaman trained in many indigenous healing modalities, including Peruvian, Mayan, Ecuadorian, Japanese energy work, acupuncture, and a Master BTB Feng Shui Consultant. Olivia Olkowski also certified me to deliver Mayan Electromagnetic Rebalancing. This medicine restores the body’s electromagnetic field. Hand placements that correspond to energy fields (chakras) and with intention, the healer channels life force energy to the chakras, making them fire more efficiently. Think of it as getting a Chakra tune-up! Reiki, is a very lovely healing modality. I was attuned and trained in Reiki level 1 & 2 by Kai Altair. Again, I make myself a channel to serve up universal life force energy to transfer light to the client. It’s a sweet, peaceful exchange of universal love. Now that sounds very New Age-y or Star Wars-y, but if you experience it, you truly feel it. Afterwards, people who have low energy, feel energy. People who are wild and can’t sit still, feel sleepy and rest. People who can’t sleep, do, and people with pain, experience painlessness. Some have wept, but anything that comes out, needs to come out. In the words of Shrek, “Better out than in!” One of my favorite ways to do healing work is “Illumination”, my journey dance workshop. Belly dance taught me how we exchange (continued on page 38)

BODY & SOUL
as well. “Illumination” can help the body let go of tight areas of stored emotion or tension. I’ve seen people heal in shamanic workshops in one weekend what years of therapy did not. Not to say that therapy is not good, but we can lie, deny, blame and rationalize, for lots of years in therapy, which keeps us from getting to our own responsibility for our participation in our unhappiness for fear of moving forward. What can your clients expect when being treated? All energy work is collaborative. If you do not want to be healed, you will not be healed. If you are invested in the victim story, or in depression, or anxiety, you will block light from coming in. Where the story is trapped may not receive the healing, but the rest of you will. The mind, body and spirit came to the healing together. The other guys say “Come on! This stuff is so good. You’re stopping us from being free!”. In time, we give in and let more light it, because the story is too burdensome to carry. A little light can go a long way. Has your work changed throughout your own life’s journey?
(continued from page 36) energies through our performance. “Illumination” is an experience where I, the space-holder, create a playlist that creates an emotional exploration of your body. Each song gives you an opportunity to discover where there are stored or blocked emotions in the body, and for the dancer (I say dancer, but one does not need to identify themselves as a dancer, just as willing to heal) to dance, stomp, leap, cry, yell, or crawl their demons or repressed joys out. During the “Illumination” I play my Medicine Drum to facilitate a trance-like state. I invite participants to play drums or shake rattles as they feel necessary to help in shaking out their blocked emotions. Afterwards we slowly unwind the intensity of the music and ground again. We all emerge from the dance lighter, sweaty and freer. We talk a little afterwards, have some dark chocolate for grounding and then head home feeling grateful and newborn. I recently learned Maori Joint work when the Maori Healers visited NYC, which involves releasing the joints of the hands and feet. It feels wonderful and brings peace, healing and pleasure to the giver and the receiver. It calms even the most anxious being. A few finger and a few toes in, people are amazed by how much they can let go. I offer this new service as well. What physical/mental/emotional issues can be addressed with these types of treatments? We store emotions in various parts of our bodies. Examples: When we lie too much, talk to much, or don’t express ourselves with our voice, or hold back our words for fear, there is imbalance in the throat chakra. Restoration work, shamanic work, or movement work can assist that person’s healing to those areas. Calming the mind (Reiki, Mayan Rebalancing, Mesa Work) can help someone with an overactive mind 38 | BOROMAG.COM | OCTOBER 2013
Yes! I learned that to care, or be empathetic, you don’t have to take on others feelings as your own. You just to hold space for them. I had to learn to protect myself from illness and to keep my mind from picking up the sensitivities of others. I took many workshops, but the most beneficial practice I learned was from Dave Markowitz, a medical intuitive. He taught to leave your heart open, because you cannot hold space for someone if you are wearing armor. You must leave a little keyhole in your heart, where someone’s pain, or emotions pass through you to be recycled by the earth. A few people who did the “protective bubble” technique had issue with that, but I know when something is true for me. I heard that message, and knew I was there to receive it, exactly when I needed it most. I also learned to not be so concerned with the outcome. What is to be, shall be. I am not the healer, just the vessel. Do you find that the Astoria community is receptive and eager to enhance their wellness regimens with these types of healing therapies? We are awakening. Consciousness is being raised about our food, the media, politicians linked to corporate greed and about our personal responsibility for the place our world is in today. More people are meditating, taking yoga, seeking acupuncture, massage, alternative therapies and looking for more meaning in their lives. I could probably have more healing clients in the city, but they already have far more resources than those in Queens. My place is here. My community is here. Truthfully, success is measured in the lives you touch. I am blessed to have so many people who trust to allow me to be part of their spirit path. So, Yes. I do feel Astoria is ready and eager for this work. Where do you practice your work? I do Reiki, Maori Joint, and shamanic work at Matrix Fitness Center. I also host “Illumination” journey dance workshops in Matrix’s beautiful studio. I can go to someone’s home as well, but only after we have established a relationship. I can do healing outdoors, host healing circles for communities, team building for workplaces and assist in family (marriage, parents and children, siblings), interventions, on a spiritual level, in the home. essica Bartley is a singer, Esthetician and make up artist who combines all her talents to come up with some pretty amazing projects.
I was so young when I became interested in music. When I was little my mom and I would always listen to music in the car. At 6 or 7 I’d gotten my first karaoke machine, and I would put on shows for my fish tank singing Mariah Carey songs. And I thought I was great! I loved Motown, I wanted to be a Supreme, and there were more complications than I thought when that came to my future and me. I think I always wanted to do it, but it always scared me too. I started my first band when I was 16 with my first serious boyfriend… I studied mass communications and broadcast media. I really thought that I wanted to work in radio.

I moved to NY in January of ‘05. I didn’t tell anyone I was moving, but my brother and I threw everything in the car and he helped move me out here. I wanted it to be a clean break, and not have anyone talk me out of it. I wound up living in Astoria after I met Erin (who I am in Cudzoo with). We met because we were the only white girl nanny’s at the rich kid school. I fell in love with Astoria immediately. I remember getting a ticket on the subway in Bushwick when I first moved here. The police officer was like, “Oh sweetheart. You should move to Queens.” I was like, what does that even mean? He said, “You are a good girl, you shouldn’t be living in this neighborhood.” I was so annoyed, I was like, I’m cool, and I could live in the hood… I loved that my apartment was big and beautiful. Also, that there was a sense of neighborhood and a lot of creative people and a (continued on page 44)

THE ARTS (continued from page 42) lot of artists without it being pretentious at all. Everyone has a separate life, and everyone has a creative side… but it doesn’t have to be the only thing we talk about. What I didn’t love about Brooklyn was that there were a lot of creative people who were busy talking about how they were creative and less busy about creating. I wanted to do more creative things, and I found such a good group of people to start that part of my life with. Cudzoo started with four girls who drank too much and wanted to throw parties. We started insisting we were a band, and we weren’t a band yet. We wanted Cudzoo to be like a girl group. It needs to be like the Ronettes, or the Supremes, or the Shirelles. It needs to be fun or over the top. It didn’t take long; we were pretty motivated and started playing out right away. I’m in a new band with my friends Liisa and Sarah called the Spinsters. I’ve never had such a free, creative project before. It’s a little bit country and I love that about it. I was really flattered that they asked me.
I have a new project called Esthekitchen. Mamrie had a meeting with some people that were looking for someone to bring a fresh new approach to wellness in video format. The webisodes are 3 minutes long and it’s shot like a cooking show. It’s simple easy solutions; home care remedies and beauty products. We made it approachable, easy, funny and fun. It’s on www.ulive.com I need to start going back to the kitchen and whipping up some new recipes. Between Cudzoo, starting a new project, Esthekitchen and working—I work full time at the Boom Boom Brow Bar—I’m pretty busy. In 5 years I want to own my own business in the beauty industry. I love what I do, so it doesn’t matter how I get to participate as long as I get to participate. Check out Jessica’s music at http://www.cudzooandthefaggettes.com/ and her Esthekitchen series at http://www.ulive.com/esthekitchen
