BRADLEY HAWKS

Dear Western Queens, While the summer was full of sun-kissed days at Gantry Plaza and festivals in Astoria Park, the chilled autumn air has us happily jumping on hay rides at the Queens County Farm, nibbling grilled cheese and running through giant corn mazes. Though weather has moved us from flip-flops to flannel, there’s no reason to completely retreat indoors. Beyond the farm, this month is the Fourth Annual Astoria Art Festival. Local favorite eateries like Sage General Store and Sanfords have broken from their cocoons yet again with some exquisite changes to the menu. Newcomer BLVD is luring us in with wine flights and a drool-inducing cubano sandwich. This month we explore B Corporations, sit down at a century-old ice cream counter, and sample delicious handmade pies from Europe. As always, please share with us your own personal anecdotes, and send me any tips, comments, news or events to bhawks@boromag.com. We look forward to sharing many more stories with you in the months ahead. Whether it’s via new menu items, paintings or the changing leaves, get out there and celebrate the colors of autumn. Gratefully yours, Bradley Hawks

BODY & SOUL

Story By HAYLEY BRIDGEWATER

The beginning of a movement Barbells for Boobs owes its origins to the friendship between founder Zionna Hanson and Cecy Morales. When Morales was only 26, she found irregularities in her breasts, but she was denied screening services and advised by medical professionals to simply come back upon turning 40. Not satisfied with this answer, Morales persisted and insisted on being screened only to finally discover that she was in the midst of stage 0 (DCIS) breast cancer.

Fighting together through fitness October is breast cancer awareness month, and it warms my heart to be sharing a story of incredible giving to such a personal cause. Breast cancer is pervasive, and like too many others, my family and friends have been hit hard. We are told over and over again that your best chance for surviving breast cancer is to detect it early, and those on the team behind Barbells for Boobs are warriors for that sentiment.

6 | BOROMAG.COM | OCTOBER 2015

Z—as Zionna Hanson is known by her friends—decided that the answers Morales was given were nowhere near satisfactory. She decided then and there to make it her life’s mission to make sure that this scenario wouldn’t happen again. Barbells for Boobs was born. Hanson has a decidedly unapologetic and relentless voice, and her only purpose is to be an advocate for those who are marginalized and running out of options. She and the entire Barbells for Boobs team continue to fight and find ways to help and provide resources to those who need them. The goal is indeed a lofty one—they aim to achieve the unachievable, to ensure that everyone gets access to detection services.

The Queens connection Though Dominick Fortino and Ant Lucic, owners of Queen’s beloved CrossFit Bell, have long been supporters of the Barbells for Boobs organization, it was in the throes of moving their business from Bayside to the Long Island City area that they were made aware of the close personal ties this community has to the breast cancer fight. Fortino explained the 2013 fundraising season as a real eye-opener. “We went from a few thousand in 2012 to over $17,000 in donations in 2013,” he said. “And that came from the fundraising efforts of only 25 individuals.” After getting settled in to their new home, the 2014 campaign brought in $27,000, putting the CrossFit Bell family in the top 10 fundraising teams (amongst 3,000 affiliates) for two years in a row, and earning them a place on the Pink Bra Tour. “I don’t know if it is the case everywhere across the country, but in this area, it is difficult to find people who haven’t been personally affected in some way by breast cancer,” explains Fortino.

the pink bra tour Each year, members of the Barbells for Boobs family set out on what they refer to as a “Thank You Tour,” traveling across the country to meet the top 10 fundraising teams, community advocates and partners, sharing their message and raising awareness of the importance of early breast cancer screenings. This year’s visit was held on Sunday, Sept. 13, and was set up as a competitive event bringing teams of athletes from the area together for a day of sharing stories, building friendships and getting a great workout while supporting an important cause. It is clear from the images, blogs and social media posts that the day was a great success. Listening to Fortino describe Z and the Barbells for Boobs staff and their visits, I am confident that this on-the-ground personal attention

to the mission is what speaks to the heart of the CrossFit community, both nationally and here in western Queens. “They do it the right way,” Fortino says. “The money raised is being used for services within our community. One example is the partnership with Project Renewal Scan Van here in NYC. The funds allocated through this fundraising is providing mammography services to many individuals that would otherwise not have access.” There is quite a great deal of respect and mutual admiration between the Barbells for Boobs organization and the CrossFit Bell family. Upon my initial correspondence with the Barbells for Boobs office about this feature, I received emails singing the praises of Fortino and Lucic and their commitment to this work. I was thrilled to find that the accolades were well deserved. The enthusiasm was contagious, and I look forward to experiencing next year’s event in person. Cancer does not care how old you are. Early detection saves lives. Though we shouldn’t have to fight so hard for these services, it is inspiring to know there are people stepping up to help us help ourselves. Enormous thanks to Barbells for Boobs, Dom Fortino and the CrossFit Bell family! For further information, I encourage you to check out barbellsforboobs.org, facebook.com/BarbellsforBoobs and the Instagram account @barbellsforboobs. For information on CrossFit Bell, visit crossfitbell.com, facebook.com/baysidebarbell or the Instagram account @ crossfitbell.

FOOD & DRINK

Ice Cream What is the only thing better than an ice cream sundae? A century-old ice cream parlor that has been serving homemade ice cream, malts, sundaes, sodas and egg creams since they opened the doors in 1909. At Eddie’s Sweet Shop, you can saddle up on a vintage bar stool, peruse a laminated menu boasting the nearly 20 classic flavors all made in-house, and then blanket it all with a selection of homemade toppings and syrups. Banana splits arrive loaded to the max, marshmallow lusciously drips from an old-school stemmed dish, and homemade sodas arrive in classic nickel silver holders. Of course you can always enjoy an icy treat served in a simple, classic cone. For a real all-American frozen dessert, this is the only place you will need to stop. So grab a scoop, and then plop down to admire the colorful cast of characters certain to be seated around you. A lazy afternoon doesn’t get much better than this. 10 | BOROMAG.COM | OCTOBER 2015

About Story & Images By BRADLEY HAWKS

Mezze Plate

18 | BOROMAG.COM | OCTOBER 2015

What do you get when you blend one of the neighborhood’s most selective specialty wine stores with one of the area’s leading culinary masterminds? You get the wine bar we’ve all been secretly dreaming of. Luckily, those familiar with Center Boulevard in Long Island City have been blessed with precisely that—a wine bar brought to you by the teams behind Blue Streak Wines & Spirits and The Burger Garage. The new wine bar, BLVD, is a quaint, casual, yet sophisticated locale for sipping a glass of wine or noshing on a delicious small plate.

g

Green Papaya & Mango Salad Cubano

While the wine program is headed by Rob Bralow, coowner of Streak Wine & Spirits, the kitchen creations are being executed by guitarist Russ Cowen. A rock star and wine always makes for a fun evening.

Truffle Mac & Cheese

With 34 wines by the glass and 55 by the bottle, Bralow is perpetually editing a loving selection of the favorites he tries for his store just down the block. “We focus on small producers with a quality reputation,” Bralow says. The bar also serves ciders, draft beer and a handful of champagne cocktails. Open since last December, the lounge features a 20-seat bar made of reclaimed wine barrels with an oxidized zinc counter that intentionally collects character markings so that everyone can leave their own mark on the bar. On Mondays, all bottles are half-price. Tuesdays are two for one. Wednesdays, you can create a $20 wine flight with a selection of any three wines.

Moroccan Lamb Meatballs

Beyond the requisite selection of charcuterie and artisanal cheeses, the menu is focused on gourmet plates and snacks, all intended for sharing. A stellar cubano ranks up there as one of the most delectable sandwiches ever created, with toasted bread points surrounding houseroasted pork, thinly sliced prosciutto, melted Idiazabal cheese, and house-made pickles. It’s the stuff dreams are made of.

Rob Bralow

Whether you are mother wielding a stroller on a Thursday at 3 p.m., a student returning from an evening lecture, or a suit seeking to loosen your tie after work, BLVD offers a little something for everyone.

Starry, Starry

Night Story & Images By BRADLEY HAWKS

Michelin Travel Publications released its New York City 2016 Michelin Guide on Sept. 30, and two of the restaurants that earned a highly coveted single star were from Long Island City.

Casa Enrique

Casa Enrique, the Mexican restaurant located at 5-48 49th Ave., and M. Wells Steakhouse, tucked away at 43-15 Crescent St., were both honored with a solitary star. The Michelin Guide awards the top restaurants with one, two or three stars, with only exceptional restaurants making the cut (six restaurants received three stars, 10 restaurants received two stars, and 76 restaurants earned one star). The stars are determined by a team of anonymous inspectors, who undergo strict training and sign confidentiality agreements before submitting their reports. The Michelin Guide also named 133 restaurants in New York City as a part of the Bib Gourmand List, which identifies restaurants serving excellent quality meals of high value at a great price. This year, almost one-fifth of the recipients came from Queens: Basil Brick Oven Pizza Biáng! bún-ker Casa del Chef Bistro Gregory’s 26 Corner Taverna Hahm Ji Bach HinoMaru Ramen Hunan House Hunan Kitchen of Grand Sichuan Il Poeta John Brown Smokehouse Little Pepper

tolle, which first opened as a restaurant in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 2002, is hoping that Americans fall in love with their Eastern European version of pie. Located in the Falchi Building in Long Island City, the bakery signed a 10-year lease in March to set up in a 2,175-square-foot space that also includes a production room. According to Irina Belska, co-owner of the company bringing the Stolle brand to America, each pie is handmade and the bakery never sells pies made the day before. “It’s totally different from the pies America knows,” Belska said. “We use all fresh ingredients, no preservatives.” Patrons will have a wide variety of savory pie fillings to choose from, including cabbage, scallion, potato with mushroom, salmon, chicken and rabbit. Sweet pie fillings include strawberry, raspberry, plum and apricot. Stolle bakery sells both whole pies and pies by the slice. Belska said her company, Bakery Group LLC, chose this location primarily because they had a good relationship with Jamestown LP, the owner of the Falchi building. The company offered a fair price in a good location, she said.

“When we entered into the new market, it’s very important to have a good working relationship with the landlord because it’s a long relationship,” Belska said. Belska likened the pies to “grandma’s home cooking” and said people looking to watch their figure should not worry about consuming these pies as they are made with fresh, natural ingredients. The pie connoisseur said she eats a pie every day and people would be “shocked” to see how slim she is. Though the bakery had a soft opening on Aug. 17, it celebrated the grand opening the afternoon of Sept. 30 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and sampling of its offerings. Belska said she is eager for people to try these pies and marvel at their beauty. “We bake with love each day, fresh and no preservatives and all natural,” Belska said. “All this beauty is done by hand and when you will see it in real life, it’s like in a picture.” 31-00 47th Ave., Long Island City Monday to Friday: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday: Closed www.stolleus.com OCTOBER 2015 | BOROMAG.COM | 35

GREEN LIVING

Impact Astoria:

Better Business through B Corps – Dapple Baby Western Queens’ character comes from the businesses across the neighborhood and the people who own them. There are some businesses that take their community impact to a level where they can create a great product and do it for good. This type of business is known as a B Corporation (benefit corporation), a for-profit corporate entity that includes positive impact on society and the environment in addition to profit as its legally defined goals. I’ve admired B Corps for some time and was thrilled when I came across Dapple Baby, whose mission for a healthier world for children has come through in their products, which got its start in Long Island City. Dapple is a line of plant-based cleaning products created by moms, for moms, that are baby-safe and baby-specific. When Dapple’s founders, Dana Rubinstein and Tamar Rosenthal, first became moms, they found a market full of “baby-friendly” products. But there weren’t any specific products for cleaning all those baby bottles, cups and dishes. Regular dish soaps left behind some lingering smells—a less-than-pleasing bouquet of synthetic fragrances and persistent odor, plus a film that never seemed to come off. So they created a line of products that were plant-based and safe for babies, specifically targeted to clean their “unique” messes. And that’s how Dapple was born. Becoming a B Corp, rather than a standard for-profit company, was an easy choice for Dapple. Jeremy Pertman, Dapple’s COO, has seen many advantages to being a B Corp. “The best part of [it],” Pertman says, “is to be in the company of amazing businesses and to be able to network

40 | BOROMAG.COM | OCTOBER 2015

with fellow entrepreneurs who have similar outlooks on life.” In Long Island City, Dapple found a great home to build its base of support. “LIC was a very good home to Dapple for many years,” says Jen Jacob, Dapple’s brand ambassador. “It was a growing community, so Dapple didn’t feel squashed by the mega corporations and it allowed for growth.” In fact, Dapple grew so much that it ended up moving its offices to Tribeca just under a year ago. Despite the move, Dapple has not forgotten its LIC roots and the community that helped it get its start. While in LIC, Dapple worked with local organizations, particularly Material for the Arts, New York’s premier reuse center, which provides a way for companies and individuals to donate unneeded supplies to thousands of nonprofit organizations with arts programming and public schools. “[We] donated a lot to them,” Pertman says. “It’s a very cool organization.” One of the things that Dapple prides itself most on is security. “Dapple gives each family the security that their house is clean of toxins and cleaning fluids that are dangerous and potentially fatal to anyone, let alone young ones,” Jacob says. “We also participate in sampling and donation of full-size products. Whether that be to families that need it most or to events raising money for different needs, we are always on the lookout for donation opportunities.” Better business through B Corps is possible and Dapple is a company that proves it. If you’re starting a business, here are three easy ways to see if a B Corp is the right model for you:

h Begin with B Lab: B Lab is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that serves a global movement of entrepreneurs using the power of business to solve social and environmental problems. It’s the home of the B Corporation movement and provides tools and resources for social entrepreneurs. Check out the B Corp community: There are 99 registered B Corps in New York State. It’s a strong community that provides great support and guidance. Be aware: Before buying or selling a product, be aware of its sustainability and its social responsibility to the community. To learn more about Dapple Baby, visit www.dapplebaby. com or email info@dapplebaby.com. For a list of all B Corporations in New York State and more, visit www.bcorporation.net.

THE ARTS

Energea is an arts collective dreamt up almost two years ago. According to founder, Michelangelo Pinto, “it combines the visual arts, music, and video production. In regards to music, which is our main focus,” he continues, “I am the founder along with my cousin, Joseph Pellicciari and Anthony Digiacomo.” The trio has impressive resumes in the music field. “Because of the family business at Ferrari Driving School,” says Pinto, “we have a vast knowledge of how to organize and deliver curriculum, as well.” Along the street outside the lobby, urban art stands as testimony to the school’s connection to the visual arts. Graffiti paintings tucked into the garage doors, alleyways, and buildings were created by patrons of the school. Music courses are offered in Ableton Live, Logic Pro, and Analog Music Production, which range in instruction on everything from music history to song arrangement, audio sampling, MIDI technology, sound creation, mixing, music theory, and recording.

42 | BOROMAG.COM | OCTOBER 2015

Art courses run the gamut from line drawing to character art, lettering, mixed media, collage, and even recyclable art and t-shirt design. Classes run from as short as 3 hour workshops to courses spanning multiple weekends—all held in a beautiful new facility located near the corner of 38th Street and 34th Avenue. Energea is also home to the only float tank in Queens—a saltwater sensory deprivation tank utilized to stimulate creativity. Whether it’s suspended in water, painting in a studio, or mixing electronic music in the lab, Energea is a one of a kind school in the neighborhood that brings together professional artists who are training the creative minds of tomorrow. 34-13 38th St, Long Island City, NY 11101 929-296-9314 www.energeanyc.com

If your heart skipped a beat at the momentary absence of one of Astoria’s most popular dining destinations, it is officially okay to take a deep breath again and relax. Sanfords has now reopened its doors beneath the train at Broadway and 31st Street—but this time, they are aiming at drawing far more than just a hearty brunch crowd.

Berkshire Pork Baby Back Ribs

The seating capacity has exploded from 55 seats to nearly 120, including an audiovisual-equipped space designated for private parties and events. While many favorites remain untouched, a few loving additions have been added to a menu that has become known as one of the most diverse and affordable in the whole city. Linguine is tossed in a cilantro cream sauce with a duo of mozzarella-stuffed meatballs. The Berkshire Pork Porterhouse arrives accompanied with a mushroomand-crab-stuffed, twice-baked potato. A glistening rack of slow-cooked Berkshire baby back ribs topped with a haystack of fried shoestring shallots will make you drool at its very sight. Even small bites are stronger than ever, with the fried ravioli now being joined with such surefire hits as the

cast iron skillet of tequila-braised meatballs, a killer truffle mac ‘n’ cheese loaded with wild mushrooms and Tequila Braised orrechiette, or an Meatballs appetizer portion of those tasty honey cider BBQ ribs. Owned and run by a tremendous team of brothers, Christ and Gus Karalekas, Sanfords has always boasted one of the most impressive selections of wine around. But now the cast of more than 350 varieties of wine is joined by nearly 300 varieties of scotches and single malts—creating one of the most prolific collections in all of Queens. A lovingly edited cocktail list focuses on vintage recipes of classic drinks, such as a New York sour mixed with egg whites. (continued on page 48)

FOOD & DRINK

Gus & Christ Karalekas

(continued from page 47) The change in the drink program opens a whole new realm of possibilities to the evermaturing restaurant that started simply as a diner in the 1930s. They sure have come a long way since the original six booths and countertop. But the tradition of excellent service remains a constant.

Linguine With Cilantro Cream Sauce

“As long as you hire good people,” explains Gus Karalekas, “you can teach almost anyone how to serve. We were renovating for almost three months, and 90 percent of our original staff returned.” This Astoria cornerstone eatery is certainly full of a team of good people. Laser-cut steel partitions, oversized Edison light bulbs, black subway tiles, and walls staggered with cast stone tiles and bronze-tinted mirrors undoubtedly elevate the restaurant’s ambiance, while the old earth-toned glass rectangles on the walls and the staff of familiar faces hearken to the comfort we have grown to love at this place. So although we may no longer be able to stumble into this neighborhood favorite for 24 hours, growing up is always good. They still serve breakfast daily from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., and they are open until 1 a.m. (or 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays). That’s plenty of time to savor a crab cake Benedict, a plate of butternut squash ravioli, or a whiskey flight or a snifter of bourbon. 30-13 Broadway, Astoria, NY 11106 718-932-9569 www.sanfordsnyc.com 48 | BOROMAG.COM | OCTOBER 2015

Farmer's Market

Autumn has officially drifted in when the denim and hoodies come out of storage, and weekends at the beach are traded for journeys to apple orchards, pumpkin patches and haunted houses. Fortunately, we don’t have to travel too far for some apple cider and toasty grilled cheese. At the Queens County Farm Museum, guests can indulge in everything from hayrides to a petting zoo, an enormous maze carved out of a field of maize, or even a farmers market located on an actual farm. We sent out a team early in September to check out the festivities, and the verdict is in—we found it a-MAZE-ing. Check out the schedule of the exciting events planned for this autumn.

Court Square in Long Island City is steadily becoming known for its growing abundance of high-quality culinary offerings. From the Michelin-starred butchery at M. Wells to the mouthwatering burgers at LIC Burger Garage, or even the eclectic noodle musings over at Mu Ramen, there are a lot of clever cooks in the kitchen in this neighborhood. But one of the original leaders on the restaurant front, Leslie Nilsson, recently decided to hand over the reigns at neighborhood favorite Sage General Store.

Now before you start screaming for your favorite bacon brunch to return, Nilsson offered BORO a chance to sit down and meet the team behind the new concept, and even sample a few dishes. While we love a great savory strip of bacon just as much--if not more—than the next guy, we have to confess that we were blown away by the recent changes—in a pretty terrific way. Run by Chef Matt Bernero and General Manager Nicole Biscardi, with Pastry by Tony Williams, the store is turning out some stunning plates. Formerly from Battersby in Brooklyn, the team is eager and poised to share their culinary vision with Long Island City. 24-20 Jackson Ave, Long Island City, NY 11101 718-361-0707 www.sagegeneralstore.com
