ou wouldn’t know from looking at these photos that fall had already rolled around. With tank tops, bright colors and breezy fabrics, Astorians were still in summer mode well into September. Western Queens residents weren’t afraid to have a little fun with their outfits this month, with unique patterns, bold colors and fun accents. Dress to impress as you walk the streets of Astoria, and you just might find yourself on the pages of BORO next month!
The jean jacket makes this bold set more casual.

Sleeping Beauty While a local artist’s son naps, she makes gorgeous watercolor creations. BY ANTONELLA SARAVIA

@TSARAVIA
ven at a young age, watercolor artist Consuelo Reinitz maintained a perfectly ordered Sanrio pencil case. She always knew who had borrowed her favorite eraser, because they were all her favorite erasers. Her pencils were neat, and her colors were in order. Who knew she’d be this way forever?! Reinitz grew up in Nicaragua and moved to New York after college. She now lives in Astoria, where she moved with her husband just before her adorable son, Lucas, was born. While Lucas was napping, Reinitz had some extra time on her hands, and she began trying her hand at DIY activities. After trying baking, cooking and several other crafts, Reinitz got bored. The household hobbies weren’t cutting it until she stumbled across some watercolors at a supply store and sat down to try them out as she made thank-you cards to send to her friends. 18 I BOROMAG.COM I OCTOBER 2016
The hobby she started that day quickly developed into something more. After casually posting photos of her thank-you cards on social media, her friends began contacting her to commission custom cards for themselves. Reinitz found herself opening both Instagram and Etsy accounts to satisfy these personal requests. Etsy had created a perfect platform for the custom craze of DIY artists, much like herself. So that’s where she chose to share her craft with the world without having to worry about mass production or venue approval.
Reinitz launched Pink Fries Paperie in November of 2015 and began taking orders that very week. Since then, she has collaborated with brides, mothers, boutiques and more. Her professional experience in account management has given her the business “know-how” required for collaboration, while her blossoming creative side is genuinely excited to create things from scratch. These days, it seems that many artists are deviating from mass production. You’ll see this trend across industries and markets. But what is it about custom cards that makes them so special? custom strokes of beauty with the brush. It seems like a novel idea, but what it’s really doing is bringing us back to the way we used to communicate, before the age of screens: it’s an invitation for handwritten letters, thoughtful messages and personal touch. With an array of products ranging from family portraits, to boutique signs, to nursery prints, to wedding packages, Consuelo has discovered a market for one-of-a-kind artistry. “It’s funny because I’ve learned a little bit about trends from what people want. I like the one-on-one with clients. Besides, I don’t always have to come up with an idea. Sometimes you help someone else finish theirs and putting that together is a cool new experience for me,” Reinitz said. After she made an illustration of The Beatles as babies — complete with facial hair — for her son’s room, requests came in for paintings of baby Phish and baby Bob Marley, among others. “It has been a truly happy discovery for me that I shared this with the world and have received a positive response,” she said. The work Reinitz does is personal, so she takes the time to learn about the details of her customers’ lives. In a world where everything is done by default, the simple act of sitting down to write a handwritten note to someone you care about might be reason enough to get yourself a hefty set and make it a new habit.

part of Astoria she didn’t know, and she’d walk around thinking, “I’m like the Goonies!” Now, the screenwriter and filmmaker understands that it’s not her hometown in that film. Still, Astoria has always inspired her to tell stories. “I don’t really get this feeling in Manhat-
tan or Brooklyn, but in Astoria, wherever I am, I’m creating stories in my mind, and it’s all inspiring,” Goodman said. “What is the story here? What could happen here? What’s interesting about this location? And I think that’s just a testament to Queens in general. It’s a very cinematic location.”
towns, or even in Manhattan, she said, but “Queens, especially Astoria, is just so gothic and so meant for horror; it’s amazing to me that it’s not featured more.” The horror genre has always been a big part of Goodman’s life. “Not a lot of girls my age were writing these horror screenplays and short stories,” she said. She now uses that childhood interest to make her own work. “I thought, why not use two things that make me unique—that I am someone in this industry who is from Astoria and my deep understanding of the horror genre—and that’s where I am now.”
I don’t really get this feeling in Manhattan or Brooklyn, but in Astoria, wherever I am, I’m creating stories in my mind, and it’s all inspiring.”
That’s why she’s setting and filming her upcoming vampire web series “You Only Die Once”—inspired by a short film she shot of the same name—right here in our neighborhood. Most popular vampire films and television shows take place in California, in small
Goodman’s first short film was a femaledriven horror comedy called “Cori’s First Horror Movie,” which was shot in one day around Halloween of 2015 in her apartment in Astoria. “It got a lot of good reception in terms of people understanding what my voice was, and that was the first time I really delved into filmmaking in that way,” she said. “I think I’ve always been a director; since I was a kid I would do ‘Saturday Night Live’ sketches and all that kind of stuff, and weird little comedy things. But this was the first time that I wrote a script that I produced.” She also directed and acted in the short. “I still can’t process how I did all that,” she said. “Now it becomes second-nature, because you get used to where you are on time and having the right people with you on set, but it was a good starting point for OCTOBER 2016 I BOROMAG.COM I 23

pilot: it’s so cheaply made, and some of the actors never even made it to the show, but it’s still one of those really great things—I have it on VHS, actually; I bought it on eBay.” Goodman had an Indiegogo campaign to raise money for the series, but she’s keeping it fairly low-budget. “I’ve always been very good at making a really good genre product at a very decent price, because I think with a lot of genre films in general, it’s about the director using their imagination to create things,” she said. “You don’t always have to have high, Hollywood, blockbuster budgets to make things that are really effective.” She wanted to make the web series

me because I had no expectations. I just had this really fun story, and it turned out that people really, really responded well to the humor and the style and just the understanding of the genre in general.” Goodman wrote the screenplay for the short film “You Only Die Once” around Thanksgiving and shot it in Astoria a few months later. She had a premiere party on Friday the 13th at Q.E.D. Astoria, which she said has been “so supportive” of her project. “I was a nervous wreck,” she said, “because you spend so much time with it. To have a ton of strangers be in the room, and to hear the reception at the Q&A, that’s when the idea sparked about the [web] series, be-
cause people were asking, ‘Oh, so this continues now, right?’ And I was like, ‘No.’” So a month after she premiered the film online, she started writing a web series, without even planning for it to go into production. But after she wrote it, she fell in love with the story and the characters and wanted to dive into it again. She views the film as a pilot for the series in a way, but she says that “the series is written in a way that if you see the film it adds to it, but we start from a place where it’s not confusing. If they go back and watch the film, it’s kind of like an added layer. I like to say it’s kind of like the ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ 24 I BOROMAG.COM I OCTOBER 2016
grander than the short film and up the production value, she said. She’s working with some of the same crew, and the web series will have all of the original cast members, with some new characters added. “All the stakes are higher—I hate saying ‘stakes,’ because I keep saying vampire puns every time I talk about the project,” she said, laughing. “But it’s true.” Also working on the web series are Astoria actor Lyssa Mandel, who regularly performs her show “The Bitch Seat” at Q.E.D., and Astoria makeup artist Lenore Koppelman. Koppelman has a background in facepainting and only recently began working
on movie monster makeup, Goodman said. “We’re getting grosser and grosser, so she’s excited,” Goodman said of Koppelman. “She’s a big horror fan, too, so I write these really gross visual things and she’s like, ‘I can’t wait to do that,’ so that’s what’s really fun.” Astoria residents might just see some of Koppelman’s work being filmed in Astoria Park later this year. “People might be seeing a crazy halfzombie vampire when we shoot outdoors in December. People can see that there are lights and cameras, so hopefully no one calls the police and goes, ‘There’s a monster in Astoria Park,’” Goodman joked. Goodman already has plans to shoot another project in Astoria Park. She is currently writing a feature-length screenplay called “The Change” that she describes as a “mother-daughter werewolf horror comedy,” and the climax takes place on top of the Hell Gate Bridge. So can we expect a season two of “You Only Die Once”? “I would love to keep it going,” Goodman said, depending on logistics. Like the short film, the first season of the web series will have an ending, but it will leave the audience with “kind of a fun teaser.” “I just believe so much in this project and the people involved,” she said, “and giving a voice to not just women in film but women in the horror genre and to Astoria.” “You Only Die Once” will be hosting two events later this month: an Undead Ball at The Black Rose (117 Avenue A, Manhattan) from 8 to 11 p.m. on Oct. 22, complete with a costume contest, drinks, giveaways, a tarot card reader, and the series’ makeup artist, who will be doing gory makeup on guests, and an event at Q.E.D. (qedastoria.com) on Halloween night. The web series will be filming later this year, with its released date to be announced. Visit yodoseries.weebly.com for more information.

OUT OF THIS WORLD BY KATRINA MEDOFF

When Sunnyside resident Grace McLean saw the final performance of “Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812” at Ars Nova in 2012, she had no idea the show was going to change her life. SEPTEMBER 2016 I BOROMAG.COM I 33

he didn’t have a ticket because it was sold out, so she decided to get there an hour early and see if she could get in. The standby line was already long, but she happened to know the first two people in line (who didn’t know each other), and they offered for her to be their plus one. The three of them got in, and no one else did. “I had an amazing time at this show,” McLean said. “I thought it was so beautiful and so fun. I remember watching it and thinking, ‘Oh, if I were in this show, I’d probably be that part right there.’” She saw the show in October or November, and by December, she had decided that in a year’s time she was going to be out of New York City. “I just wasn’t happy, and I felt like I was struggling in a way that I didn’t feel like I deserved to be,” she said. “I wanted to do something else. And I felt really good about that decision. I’d just been dumped, and I was like, I don’t need this. I feel free. I’m gonna get out of here.”
Then in January of 2013, Ars Nova asked her to audition for “Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812” because it was transferring to an off-Broadway space. Ars Nova had asked the whole cast back, but one actress wanted to take another job in Chicago—the one who played the character that McLean had felt she was right for. “I thought, that’s so funny, because I don’t do this anymore, but I’ll just go in and sing a song that I wrote, and tell them how much I 34 I BOROMAG.COM I OCTOBER 2016
liked it,” McLean said. “And somehow I kept getting called in.” She’s been with the show ever since. On Oct. 18, “Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812” will begin previews on Broadway, starring Denée Benton as Natasha and Josh Groban as Pierre. McLean plays Marya, Natasha’s strict yet kind godmother. The musical is based on a 79-page section of “War and Peace.”
The story is so simple and identifiable,” she said. “‘War and Peace’ seems like such a big meal, but this is really just one amuse-bouche; it’s not the whole thing. It’s a love story, basically. Who doesn’t love a love story? And who doesn’t love a love story that makes you cry and think about your own mortality? That’s the best kind,” she said, laughing. “That’s the Tolstoyan kind.” McLean said that “The Great Comet” is for fans of musicals like “Fun Home,” “Hamilton” and “Futurity”—shows that are challenging the notion of musical theater. “Rachel Chavkin, our director, refers to it as ‘theater 360’ in that it happens all around you,” McLean said. There’s no fourth wall separating the stage and the audience. “It’s at once more blown apart than that and
more intimate, because there’ll be people sitting on the stage. They’re building performance spaces for us in the traditional audience; they’re building staircases from the balcony down to the orchestra. It’s all just levels, so that everything in the space is connected. Audience is everywhere; actors are everywhere. So at once you get great distance from people, and then sometimes we’ll be right up next to you and we’ll talk right to you. “It’s adapted from a book, and there’s no hiding that,” she said. “Often characters will talk about themselves in the third person, describing themselves and what they’re doing.” The music is very eclectic, McLean said. “There are some classical elements, but also folk, but also Russian folk, but also rock, but also electronica. A lot of things are going on at once. And I like the way that [composer]

Dave [Malloy] talks about that, because there have been these critiques about the show like, ‘There’s all these different styles going on in here!” but that’s exactly what happens in ‘War and Peace.’ It’s a mishmash of styles. There’s a narrative, but there’s also philosophy, but there’s also history, and it’s all things at once jumbled together, and that’s what makes it so beautiful.” McLean has also performed in “Sleep No More,” “Brooklynite,” “The World is Round,” “Bedbugs!!!” and more. As a singer, McLean writes and performs original music with her band, Grace McLean & Them Apples. She said that her boyfriend describes her music as “blueeyed funk soul,” whereas she calls it “loopy soul pop—loopy both in that it’s, ‘She’s weird!’ but also that I use a looping station.” She got a looping station a few years ago so that she could accompany herself with
her voice. Her last EP was “all looping stuff,” she said, and the full-length album that her band will release next year is a mix of songs with and without the looper (visit gracemclean.bandcamp.com for free singles being released in the year leading up to the album release). The band consists of her, a percussionist and a bassist who also plays keys at the same time. Grace McLean & Them Apples has performed at venues like Rockwood Music Hall, Joe’s Pub, Ars Nova and The Flea Theater. They performed at Lincoln Center’s American Songbook two years in a row. In April 2015, the band traveled to Pakistan on an artistic ambassadorship program through the U.S. State Department. McLean is also writing a musical, “In the Green,” about 12th-century nun, mystic, musician and artist Hildegard von Bingen. McLean studied medieval art in college,
and von Bingen’s work stood out to her because “her work wasn’t like anything else that was happening at the time” and because she’s one of the first composers students learn about. On top of all that, McLean teaches voice lessons, focusing on “the voice as it connects to body and emotions and psychology.” “I’m interested in the human voice and all of its potentials and all of its ugly, raw, broken sounds, because those are a part of it, and I don’t want to scrub anything clean for anybody, but I want people to embrace all aspects of it, because when you can acknowledge that all of this stuff is in there—all of the weird screamy stuff and the broken things—it makes the stronger stuff stronger and more honest.” Visit greatcometbroadway.com and gracemclean.com for more information on the show and McLean’s other projects. y teammates and I scurried around the dimly lit dorm room, looking for a clue—any clue. Someone overturned a rug, while another crouched to peek under the bed. But I was the one who happened upon the right hiding place; a key clattered to the ground. “See if it opens that lock,” I said, tossing the key across the room to one of my friends. It did. And we were off. Over the next 60 minutes, my team solved clue after clue to figure out what happened to Spooky Room 479’s fictional occupant, Sarah, who had mysteriously disappeared, and to escape the room before her ghost haunted us forever. In the process, we cracked codes, used our musical skills, opened combination locks, communed with a 38 I BOROMAG.COM I OCTOBER 2016
ghost, and gamely stuck our hands in an unknown substance, all in the name of getting out of the room before the timer ran out.
And we did—with 5 minutes and 2 seconds to spare, we tumbled out of Spooky Room 479, laughing and cheering.
T UN Escape rooms are growing in popularity, popping up all over the country and around the world, but Locked, at 22-56 31st St., is the first to come to Astoria. It opened in August and offers two challenges: Vendetta and Spooky Room 479. In the mafia-inspired Vendetta room, your team is part of a mob family trying to break into a secret bank account before midnight, when the $300 million kept in the account will be lost to you forever. It’s open to kids as young as 8 (with adult supervision) and has an escape rate of 38 percent. One of the owners, Sandra Anagnostos, who was born and raised in Astoria, said that kids actually do better than adults on some of the clues. “Kids sometimes find the obvious
BY KATRINA MEDOFF @KatrinaMedoff @katya_m22
clue, where adults will tend to overthink it,” she said. Spooky Room 476 is “more immersive” than Vendetta, Anagnostos said. “In Vendetta you know what your goal is, while in Spooky Room it’s more of a storyline; you’re trying to figure out what happened to Sarah,” she said. “It’s more of a mystery.” Spooky Room 479 isn’t scary, per se (OK—I’ll admit that something made me
jump), but with the dim lights and bloody handprints on the walls, it is a bit creepy. That, in addition to its increased difficulty level, is why it’s for ages 14 and older. About 25 percent of groups make it out of Spooky Room 479 before the hour’s up, but teams have fun no matter what, Anagnostos said. “We found that no matter if you get out of the room or you don’t solve it within 60 minutes, the feedback has been tremendous,” she said. “People have a great time and they absolutely love it. Our main concern is for the cusOCTOBER 2016 I BOROMAG.COM I 39

tomer to come out of there high-fiving us, whether they escaped or not, for the customer to have a great experience where they’re going to want to go try another escape room.” A “gamemaster” introduces teams to the game and is able to give clues through a TV screen mounted on a wall in the room when teams get stuck. If a team doesn’t make it out of the room in the allotted time, the gamemaster will explain what steps they needed to take to escape. “We’ve had a lot of groups that do one room and then if the second room is available, they’ll do it right away on the same day,” Anagnostos said. “And then as soon as they finish both rooms, they’re like, ‘OK, when are you coming up with new rooms?’” Locked won’t be changing their rooms for at least a year. First of all, it takes about two to three months to create a room, from coming up with an idea and implementing it to doing beta testing (“It’s a lot of trial and error,” Anagnostos said). While some escape room companies buy pre-made challenges from outside vendors, Locked’s rooms are all original. One of the Locked partners, Vassilis Matsos, has an escape room in Greece, and Spooky Room 479 (which he created) is the most popular room at that location. The Locked team adapted that room for the Astoria location, so you won’t find this challenge anywhere else. Vendetta is a combination of two rooms that Matsos had in Greece, plus some added technological aspects. Additionally, the rooms won’t be changing for a while because they’re hoping to draw customers from not only western Queens, but also Manhattan, since the area is so accessible by the subway. “We were originally looking to open in Manhattan, but we found this loca40 I BOROMAG.COM I OCTOBER 2016
The BORO team at Locked
tion and fell in love with it right away,” Anagnostos said. “Astoria is just such a great neighborhood, and the Ditmars area is very vibrant right now. You have great restaurants, coffee shops, some art galleries, and being that our location is literally steps from the N train, we just think that it’s so convenient for people to hop on the train, come do the escape room and then go out to a great restaurant, bar or coffee shop.” Locked is looking to partner up with a few restaurants in the area to offer birthday packages. The escape room has already had a few birthday parties for kids and teens. Anagnostos said that escape rooms are great team-building activities for corporations or offices, and that it’s also fun for bachelor or bachelorette parties or date night. “The idea of escape rooms is that you get together with a group of friends and it’s something different to do,” she said. “We also feel that everybody’s so attached to their technology these days, and this is just a different way to have fun.”
One escape room enthusiast who’s done 106 rooms said that Spooky Room 479 was one of the best rooms he’s ever done, Anagnostos said. He later came back so he could do Vendetta, too. I’ve done nowhere near that many escape rooms—only a couple—but I had the most fun at Locked, where there was a greater variety to the clues, more technological elements, and small team sizes that allow everyone to have a major role in escaping. “It’s just a little escape from reality,” Anagnostos said. “Our goal is to add a little mystery to everybody’s everyday lives.” Escape games at Locked are $28 per person, and teams that want to guarantee having the room to themselves should book the whole room. ust around the corner from the Astoria-Ditmars Boulevard train stop sits a converted factory building that houses several successful small businesses, and it is common to spot musicians, tattoo aficionados, gym-goers and yogis headed toward its doors. But those “in the know find themselves headed up the steps for their preferred answer to their medical ailments. Functional Health Acupuncture is only a year old, but already, owner and practitioner Devin McGilvery has gained enough clients to expand his business from a one-man show into a wellness clinic. All of his success so far has come from word of mouth or referrals, and McGilvery has been busy treating patients one at a time with acupuncture, massage therapy, cupping, gua sha, laser acupuncture and facial rejuvenation. He felt it was time to add a community OCTOBER 2016 I BOROMAG.COM I 45

acupuncture clinic (in which multiple patients are treated simultaneously in one room) and hire two acupuncturists and a receptionist so that he could treat more people. He is also looking to rent out space to other massage therapists and/or acupuncturists. “I see people walking down the street who could use some help and I'm ready to spread the word that these types of treatments are available right in our neighborhood,” he said. Community acupuncture, he said, is a great way to make the treatment accessible to more people. “There are a lot of insurance companies that still do not cover acupuncture and then when they do, it is pretty much just for pain,” McGilvery said. “But acupuncture can help with so much more, from anxiety and depression to addiction and autoimmune diseases. Community acupuncture brings the prices of a treatment to what a person would 46 I BOROMAG.COM I OCTOBER 2016
have to pay for their co-pay with insurance. It is a way to help all of those people who otherwise cannot afford the proper care.” The community acupuncture room, like
the rest of the healing oasis on the first floor of 38-01 23rd Ave., is calm, quiet, green and serene. The patients at Functional Health Acupuncture are 18 to 80 years old, but McGilvery is hoping that his business will soon treat younger patients, too. “Eastern medicine can benefit children as well, and I hope to expand my modalities to all age groups in the near future,” he said. Clients generally come to McGilvery with a specific issue, and he is able to deal with that problem—and more. “I mainly work with people who are in pain or dealing with some movement or performance issue,” he said. “But what I love about eastern medicine is that there is so much more that we can help with. The human body tells us what is going on, and my whole goal is to make the individual function better internally and externally.” McGilvery, a grounded presence with a joyful soul and a welcoming smile, is in-
The energy, the people, the culture—I learned more in the first two years living on my own in New York than I had in my entire life." Devin McGilvery The services offered at FHA are varied and provide a wide array of healing techniques while keeping it simple for the patients: Acupuncture is the use of small, very thin needles to stimulate points on the body to help treat conditions and bring balance to the body’s internal systems, providing better functionality and increased overall health. Massage therapy and other modalities such as cupping and gua sha help relax tight muscles and connective tissue so that the patient can move and perform better and deal with the stress people put on themselves on a daily basis. Laser acupuncture is becoming more widely used as it doesn’t involve needles but can stimulate key areas to help treat a client’s specific conditions. Facial rejuvenation is another acupuncture treatment that FHA provides that helps patients look more youthful and can reduce fine lines and wrinkles over time.
terested in learning a client’s entire story so that he can best provide a holistic approach to improving quality of life. It is no surprise that many of his patients consider him a friend and can say without hesitation that he was “born to heal.” McGilvery grew up in Southern California and moved to New York City with the intention of studying 3-D animation and architecture at the Pratt Institute. But the move to New York dramatically changed his path, as he was first exposed to eastern medicine once he lived on the East Coast. “The energy, the people, the culture—I learned more in the first two years living on my own in New York than I had in my entire life,” he said. “This place is magical. It’s not easy living here, but I had the support of my family and friends and worked my butt off every day.” He went to massage school at the Swedish Institute, and after graduating, he took a course in personal training at the same college. After spending some time working in Astoria as a massage therapist and personal trainer, McGilvery felt that acupuncture was the next step. He then earned his master’s degree in acupuncture at Pacific College. McGilvery has lived in Astoria for seven years—“I couldn’t see myself living anywhere else,” he said—and with the population boom in western Queens, it was the perfect place for his rapidly growing business. “It is a growing neighborhood with a very diverse group of people. I love the beauty of Astoria Park, the amazing views, all of the old and new restaurants and bars opening in the area,” he said. “And the people! This place is a melting pot but still has a very strong Greek and Italian heritage to it. Even though I am a transplant and neither Greek nor Italian, I love this area in Queens. Astoria is everything.”

he passing of Tony Mazzarella, a pillar of a man in Long Island City, was deeply felt in the early months of 2015. A retired boxer and relentless giver, Mazzarella’s contributions went far beyond charity or money. His restaurant, Waterfront Crabhouse, provided a place for the community to gather, for fellow former pugilists to catch up, and for local families to mark moments in their lives. The old Waterfront Crabhouse was as beloved by the people of Long Island City as Mazzarella, and when it followed its founder into the great beyond just a month after Mazzarella’s death, its absence was felt keenly. Thankfully, local restaurateur Joseph Licul and his partners, known for their work at Skinny’s Cantina and SHI, saw an opportunity to rescue a cherished neighborhood institution from the fate of being turned into another Hunter’s Point high-rise. Working closely with the Mazzarella family, their team gave Waterfront Crabhouse a modern update while preserving elements from the previous iteration: the iconic street lamp in front of the restaurant, the ivy hanging from the chandeliers—and the dedication to seriously good crabs. Rebranded as Crabhouse and reopened in August, the restaurant offers both a
crabhouse and a steakhouse experience. Fried soft-shell crabs share table space with luxuriously tender rib eyes, while diners clink glasses of dry red wines or fruity whites over lobster arragiata. If you like chicken, beef, pork or fish, you’ll find something you like here. General manager Sean Cummings provided us with the ultimate Crabhouse experience, starting with the Ringside Tiki cocktail, a tribute to the previous restaurant’s important place in New York City’s boxing scene. The delightfully
fruity rum drink was perfect for that extra warm week or two when summer always manages to sneak into fall. After that, we proceeded to sample from the beer taps, all dispensing local Queens beers. We sampled drafts from Singlecut and the LIC Beer Project, but there were also entries from IcoNYC, Big Alice Brewing, Rockaway Brewing Company and more. While I’m more than content with a frosty pint in front of me, Cummings was eager to share his wine list with us — and let it never be said that a BORO writer turned down an opportunity to be plied with more booze. Cummings prioritized quality and value in the curation of the restaurant’s wine list, and he made a point of including a plethora of New York state offerings. We sampled Sauvignon Blancs, Sancerres, Bordeaux and more, and were just as impressed with the wine as we were with the beer. We showed up hungrier than we were thirsty, and we weren’t left unsatisfied for long. Our first course, roasted garlic-chili blue crabs and fried soft-shell crabs in a mind-blowing butter sauce, graced our table quickly. After one bite of the soft shell, we knew we had to place our next order immediately—these babies were going to go fast. There was an unexpected (yet welcome) subtle sweetness to the softshell crab that played nicely with the butter sauce. Grab an order for the table when you go. OCTOBER 2016 I BOROMAG.COM I 51

Next up was rib eye served on a massive butcher’s block. It was savory, juicy and tender, and while the restaurant recommends you pair it with a 2008 Les Allées de Cantemerle Bordeaux, Singlecut’s Weird & Gilly IPA paired with it remarkably well, too. Not far behind the rib eye was lobster arragiata, a cracked whole Maine lobster, lightly fried and served over spaghetti with broccoli rabe. It was paired with a 2013 Jura Chardonnay, described as a “burgundy-like white wine” by Cummings. I may not know enough about wine to know if it tastes like a burgundy, but I know when a wine just works. And with this lobster, it undeniably did. If you like lobster, you’ll like this dish. If you don’t like lobster, you’ll still like this dish. If you’re allergic to lobster, this dish is worth a trip to the ER. Sweet and succulent, tangy yet savory at the same time, the lobster arragiata runs the gamut of what you’d expect from lobster, and then it hops the fence and starts pulling from other cuisines. Its sauce had the tangy, lemony flavor one would expect, but there was a spiciness that managed to be attention-grabbing without being overwhelming at the same time. It was one of the most interesting takes on lobster I’ve ever experienced. As we finished our wine and built up a desperate mental fortitude to fit the last lingering pieces of succulent lobster and steak into our stomachs, Cummings brought out yet another member of his impressive team: Belin the pastry chef.
The pastry chef. While something in me cried out in silent protest (I assume the part that evolved to keep me from gorging myself into becoming an easy meal for an extremely lazy jaguar), the rest of me told that part of me to shut up and make some room. Blueberry cheesecake and a triple chocolate cake came out, followed by a 2014 Vidal Blanc ice wine from Standing Stone Vineyards in the Finger Lakes. The blueberry cheesecake was sweet and thick, and its crust (arguably the best part about any proper cheesecake) was delicious.
Photos: Bridget Kenny/BORO
52 I BOROMAG.COM I OCTOBER 2016
The triple chocolate cake was surprisingly light and, I feel, a misnomer: chocolate cake, chocolate filling, white chocolate crumbles and a hard chocolate shell icing on top is a decidedly quadruple chocolate cake. But I wasn’t there to quibble about semantics, I was there to eat ridiculously decadent food. It was when we were offered espresso and coffee that I simply had to start refusing. I am only one man, with one stomach, after all. I have limits, whether I like them or not. Our night at Crabhouse was wonderful and full of great drinks, amazing food and improperly named chocolate cakes. Should you decide to swing by, order the fried soft-shell crabs for the table and some tasty Queens beers, and try the lobster arragiata. If you’re not in a shellfish mood, the rib eye is your friend, or simply ask any of their incredibly helpful staff for their suggestions. The Crabhouse will be rolling out a full brunch menu soon, and the staff has already started testing out a Bloody Mary bar. With valet parking returning soon and stunning skyline views a short post-dinner walk away, you’d be hard-pressed to find a bad thing about Crabhouse. The restaurant might not be as boxingcentric as it used to be. Fight cards and boxing gloves no longer adorn the walls, and with new management has come new takes on classic dishes. But if Tony Mazzarella’s goal was to provide a place for a community he loved to celebrate their lives with good food and drink, then his legacy is in good hands.
