STREET STYLE

eason,

Boho Chic BY MARIE TORIO

@PHOTOSBYMARIETORIO

s I walked down 30th Avenue enjoying the Astoria street fair, I noticed several looks with a very bohemian chic vibe. There were cut-out maxi dresses, floral pants and skirts, geometric prints, off-the-shoulder feminine tops, ruffled dresses and a classic jean short, tank and fedora combo. Here are some of my favorite fashionistas from this month.

A

story denim

Beatrice (@beez_knezzz) was enjoying the Astoria fair with friends when I noticed her look. She said her style is “chic.” She paired her off-theshoulder feminine top with a floral skirt and layered bracelets perfectly.

Michael (@mbyeung0730), a financial adviser enjoying the day with his family, said his style is “relaxed urban.” The jeans, tank and fedora created a great laid-back but stylish look for a day off.

6

OCTOBER 2018

Genesis (@genesis__xo), an Astoria wedding planner assistant, called her style “simple.” Her geometric print cropped top and shorts was simple but had just the right amount of flare!

Brittney (@brittney2kim) is student who was visiting Astoria. She said her style is “boho chic.” I couldn’t agree more! Her soft, blue-and-white, ruffled, off-the-shoulders dress was a perfect outfit for a weekend day out running errands.

Kendall (@kendalljaye16) works in advertising and was enjoying some ice cream outside of Ample Hills. She describes her fashion choices as “hippie biker chick.” Her cut-out maxi dress, shades and sandals came together for a perfect, effortless ensemble for a nice weekend day with friends.

Astoria resident Ifeoma (@ifeomachinex) is a research assistant who was on her way back home from visiting family when I spotted her. She described her style as “Little House/bohemian.” I loved how she kept her top solid but added a floral pant to her look.

his month, we asked you to tag us (@boromagazine) in your Instagram pictures of Halloween in Astoria, Long Island City and Sunnyside. Locals dressed up as everything from a firefighter to “Lion King” characters, and one resident spotted a neighborhood grocery store with gruesome decor. Some of your costumes were out of this world, from a “Star Trek”inspired alien to Intergalactic Girls to “Star Wars” characters General Leia, Darth Vader, Jedi Gehrig, Yoda and Rey. One local dog even dressed up as sushi! Here are some your spookiest submissions.

MAKERS’ MARK By REBECCA PATTON @BECCAPATTONSAYS @BECCAPATTONSAYS

The concept of a boutique is nothing new, but a collaborative storefront, filled with art and products from local vendors, is a refreshing addition to the Astoria/Long Island City border.

B

outiqueloo (pronounced boutique-uh-loo) is a new art gallery shop located on 32nd Street — a few blocks from the Museum of the Moving Image. Its colorful teal exterior and cheery, striped awning helps convey the fun, creative spirit of its founders. And inside, it's been decorated and furnished, eagerly awaiting both vendors to sell their wares and customers to buy them. Boutiqueloo is a wing of Okabaloo FunArtFaktory right next door at 35-52 32nd St. Both are owned by Astoria resident Olta Dokle and her sister, Bora. It's difficult to de-

18

OCTOBER 2018

fine what exactly Okabaloo FunArtFaktory is, since it functions as a children's party space, an art gallery and an art market, among other purposes. Okabaloo opened on November 11, 2017, but it's grown fast. It hosts monthly art markets for local vendors called NYC Made Market (previously called Queens Made Market), and its first one was in May of this year. Dokle is an artist herself (her sister is a musician) and she explained that she's currently experimenting with glass. “I'm doing upcycling and recycling art right now, so I'm using jars and bottles,” Dokle said.

@ thebrassowl

@ lovedayqueen

Boutiqueloo is run by Rebekah Thornhill and Kirsten Penaloza, two local makers Dokle connected with through the NYC Made Market. In fact, Boutiqueloo became the art gallery shop it is today in large part because Penaloza saw potential in the Boutiqueloo space, already owned by Dokle, and inquired about it. “I saw the storefront, I saw it was empty — there were a few things in there, but it wasn't really open,” Penaloza recalled. “So I started to think like, it would be amazing to use this space for artists — all the ones that were in the market at that time.” So she approached the owner about doing something with the shop, and both Thornhill and Dokle became enthusiastically involved. “I just had to say one small thing, and she already elaborated perfectly what I had in mind,” Penaloza said of Thornhill. “And so it was like a really good match from the beginning.” Thornhill, by the way, 3-D prints jewelry through her business, R+D, where she sells quirky earrings like 3-D printed slices of pizza, roaring T-Rexes, and origami cranes. “I do all the designs myself, and they're all using a biodegradable plastic so that it's a little bit more responsible toward the environment,” Thornhill explained. “It'll biodegrade in six months in a commercial facility.” However, she emphasized that the earrings will not disintegrate on her customers' ears. “I get that question a lot,” she said, laughing. “That does not happen — it is perfectly wearable and ready to go.” Penaloza, on the other hand, runs Bodhi Leaf Designs, which specializes mainly in vegan soap and skincare. However, since her brand's mission is to promote a positive message, she wanted to include that in her products, too. “I thought, 'OK, the soap doesn't say anything about tolerance and compassion,'” Penaloza recalled. “So I started to put little lucky charms around them.” Her soaps are wrapped in beautiful fabric, tied off with dainty trinkets, which add a bit more personality and meaning to her products. And while Dokle, Thornhill, and Penaloza will all sell their wares in the revamped Boutiqueloo storefront, they've been meeting with other local artists and makers to sell their products there, too. “There will be different makers that will be behind the desk selling, but it's never like, upselling your own product over someone else's or anything,” Thornhill expressed. “It really is a collaboration and everyone is trying to help each other succeed.”

EXPLORE YOUR BORO

Dokle enthusiastically agreed, saying that there tends to be some distrust among artists. “People get a little bit protective and scared, and I don't think like that,” she said. “New York City is very big — there is plenty for everybody, as long as we are authentic in what we do and we love it, there is plenty for everybody. So I only see see possibilities … rather than a competition.” Since all three women live in the area — Dokle in Astoria, Thornhill in Sunnyside and Penaloza in Jackson Heights — they are familiar with other makers (as they call themselves) and storefronts in the area. When I met with these artists, Dokle was hosting a children's birthday party next door at Okabaloo. They were also gearing up for an open house later that afternoon, in order to meet with potential artists and makers to sell their wares in the shop.

20

OCTOBER 2018

Their goal is to have just one or two people working the register at any given time, so the makers wouldn't have to stand by their products. All three women seemed giddy, busy and just a tad nervous. And for good reason! Their soft opening was approaching, on Sept. 29 and 30, and by the time of publishing, they will be open on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. At the end of the day, Penaloza envisions Boutiqueloo being a space that is by and for the surrounding community. “[B]y supporting local vendors and makers, you also support their economy. You support their children going to school. You support the community. You support other small business,” she explained. “And then, by sharing your knowledge … you also continue to support the growth of something a little bit more sustainable and unique.” Thornhill is on the same page, mentioning that there are some Sunnyside fixtures that locals will visit even if they’re not going to buy anything. She envisions a similar environment at Boutiqueloo. “[W]e just want to make it a better place to live!” Thornhill said. “And if so we can do that, if we can make people smile, make people laugh, give them a product that they really love and helps them in their daily routine, however that may be, we're happy.”

Photos courtesy of Boutiqueloo

“My hope is that we can learn about them as much as they learn about Boutiqueloo,” Thornhill said ahead of this event. “And that kind of goes with some of our overall ethos of wanting to support each other and work together.” The space itself is small, but they've done a lot of work with it. The shelves are custommade by Thornhill's husband and are built out of sustainably sourced wood. “We really tried to incorporate what Rebekah does with her jewelry,” Penaloza said, “that it's also sustainable, that our footprint is reduced, that we don't just create a lot of trash but that we start reusing stuff and make something great out of it.” Even the stain they used is natural, which Thornhill said was also cheaper. “But it's also fun doing it,” Penaloza pointed out. “It's like my heart and sweat and blood in this. It's also bonding with the space — with each other.” They were still working on the store layout when I spoke with them, but their vision is to display all of the products in a way that it would both make sense commercially while also making sure the vendors felt comfortable. “It's much more a collective spread,” Thornhill explained. “So when a customer would come in, they would understand it as a handmade shop with lots of things around.”

THE DISH ON GOSSIP Gossip Coffee returns from summer hiatus with new cocktail and cuisine offerings BY MATT DUTILE @MATTDUTILE

It's a bustling Saturday morning when my wife Laura and I stroll into Gossip Coffee at 37-04 30th Ave. and sidle up to a table. Brunch is in full swing, and we're prepared to delve into the new cocktail and cuisine offerings we've been waiting for since Gossip's temporary closing several months back. Returning from their summer hiatus with an updated interior and backyard and a bounty of new beverage and food offerings, Gossip Coffee (and #Cocktails) aims to capture coffee lovers once more — and woo a new clientele with artfully crafted cocktails and delectable world cuisine. The eatery has preserved its signature retro-meets-mid-century modern décor, but the space was given a fresh update with an extended bar and seating, new tables and a revamped outdoor patio complete with slotted wooden tables and jade-green cushioned benches — perfect for outdoor lounging. The new digs are thanks to a partnership with For Five Coffee, the new majority manager of Gossip. Founded in 2011 by best friends Stefanos Vouvoudakis and Tom Tsiplakos, the Queens-based roaster has locations around Manhattan, Manhasset and Los Angeles. Bags of their freshly roasted Ethiopian Yirgacheffes, Sumatran Mandehlings, and Colombian Nariños line the shelves above us. “I grew up right here — right on 35th Street,” Tsiplakos said. “I used to ride my bike up and down the street there.” “We love this neighborhood,” Vouvoudakis added. “We’re glad to be back in Astoria and powering Gossip Coffee.” We’re joined shortly by the shop’s general manager, George Monogioudis, who delivers a pair of cocktails in beveled glasses, topped with “Gossip”-branded citrus peels. “I think the combination of coffee and cocktails and food, especially the way we're doing it, has been missing from the neighborhood,” Monogioudis said. “For Five has always been here since the beginning, but it was time for

an update. We want this to be a relaxed place where you can grab a coffee on the run, or sit down to lounge and work, or meet with friends. It's a quiet and friendly vibe.” With the partnership and dining options comes a new set of hours. Gossip will offer breakfast all day (until the 10 p.m. kitchen closing for all food), lunch plates from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and tapas and cocktails from 6 p.m. to close. Watching the growing line at the register, it’s apparent we’re not the only ones to catch word of Gossip’s re-opening by mid-September. This is prime people watching. A steady stream of Astorians amble up to the white quartz countertop and bunker down at tables in front of glowing laptop screens, sipping cups of cold brew while clacking away at keyboards. Orders of creme brulée French toast, avocado crush, and tuna poke salad are called out by waiter-istas in stitched denim aprons with rivet-punched leather pockets. Diners’ hands fly up to flag their orders. Our food arrives in the commotion, coffee rub brisket and Avodaise eggs Benedict BLT, and we dig in with the zeal reserved only for weekend feasting. There’s something mesmerizing about these patterned red tiles along the floor and bar top around us. Or perhaps it’s the flavor-trance I find myself in between bites of smokey brisket punctuated by pinkhued pickled onions. Maybe it’s the Rosemary's Daisy — the shop’s ode to a margarita with hints of rosemary peeking around washes of Corralejo Blanco tequila — or stolen sips of Laura’s crispy floral and fruity Negroni. Whatever it is, I want more. The comestibles are the creation of For

Five executive chef Scheyla Acosta, a disciple of the French Culinary Institute in Manhattan. She spent the year prior to joining For Five traveling the globe sourcing food and recipes as the personal chef for a Kuwaiti family. “I learned all about food in the kitchens of my mother and grandmother in Barcelona,” she explained while adding the final garnishes to a halved lobster roll, marbled tail and claw meat barely contained by the toasty brioche bun underneath. “I want you to bite into a dish and have that moment from childhood — of warm cocoa with a blanket by the fire, of walking in your grandmother’s kitchen. We want to serve simple and flavorful dishes from North Africa, Asia, as well as European and American classics. It’s my play on healthy home-cooking. “To me, food should be sexy,” she continued. “It should be as attractive to the eye as to the palate."

It’s obvious by the way my brisket sandwich never quite reaches the plate again that she’s on to something here. We while away the next hour sampling bites across the menu, sipping creamy cold brew Americanos, and surveilling the ever-moving flow of patrons. As we grab the check, Monogioudis hands us a to-go bag with two gooey Duchess cookies that could easily rival neighboring Chip in sugary pound-for-pound goodness. Halfmoon rounded domes of warm chocolate chips melt and cling to our teeth as we spare one last look around the remodeled shop and outdoor patio. Sun worshipers are soaking up rays at the backyard tables between peeks of green tarp and quaffs of lemon thyme sours. It’s a glorious day to be out and about, and as we return home along 30th Avenue arm in arm, gleefully gabbing about the recent victuals, we notice passersby craning to listen to our culinary tale. This piece of Gossip is onto its next busybodies. OCTOBER 2018 I BOROMAG.COM

STYLE

Making Style

PERSONAL BY CAMERON NORSWORTHY @LITTLEGIRLBIGBUN

Nicole Russo never intended to be a personal stylist. The Woodside resident started dressing Manhattan professionals after some previous passions weren’t all they were cracked up to be. But a few “entrepreneurial stumbling blocks” later and she’s managed to create her own personal styling business, called Let’s Get You. Her insights have been featured in Fast Company, Women’s Health and plenty of others, laced with clients singing her praises.

usso studied advertising and communications at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), but her career in marketing didn’t suit her interests as she’d hoped. After getting laid off from her work at a graphic design firm, she knew that, next, she needed to work in a capacity that was more in line with her interests. After personal shopping for friend from Forest Hills, Russo knew she’d found her gig: “When you do the right thing, it’s supposed to feel like breathing,” she said, and styling came so easily to her. Thus, Russo began to “navigate the world of retail,” quickly finding that she had quite a lot to learn. Funnily enough, Russo had never worked in retail before becoming a personal stylist. She decided to further develop her skill set as personal shopper at an Anthropologie store, then at a J.Crew location, scaling it up to Bloomingdales, and topping it off as a luxury personal shopper at Net-a-Porter. After five years in that role, she felt she’d put in her time and learned plenty; “the entrepreneurial bug took over,” she recalls, and Let’s Get You ached to take shape. Russo aims to “make people look the way they see themselves in their heads.” It’s never about changing personal style, as her work is “rooted in authenticity.” She’s found this same vibration in Queens — a place “not watered down or diluted OCTOBER 2018 I BOROMAG.COM

by pomp and circumstance.” So, she explains: “It’s allowed me to cultivate a business in what could be perceived as a superficial industry,” while maintaining her “heart and soul” throughout. So where does Russo dig for sartorial treasures? As far as Queens shops go, Lockwood in Astoria is a must. “They’ve upped their style game [lately],” Russo observed. She’s been able to find pieces that are “higher quality [while] keeping with a reasonable price point.” She’s found “awesome, standout pieces” at Buffalo Exchange. She cites mimi&mo as a prime Long Island City spot, but admits that her favorite way to work is consignment shopping, as “the hunt is really exciting.” Her signature is mixing low-end staples with higher-quality pieces for a polished look overall. “That’s what I love about Queens,” she mused. She loves those “sleeper hits where you can make a killing.” She spreads her message further on her Instagram (@lets_get_you) and blog (letsgetyou.com), and she has some forthcoming educational resources that can help you “dress smart-casual in this ever-changing landscape.” “What I do is really about empowering and shining a light on people and who they are,” Russo said.

TIKI TRANSFORMATION BY ESTELLE PYPER @ESTIEPYPER @ESTIE_PYPER

Tiki first came into Adam Demerath’s life through cocktails. What started out as a mixology hobby turned into a lifestyle, then a party. “I think that’s most people’s introduction into it, but once it kind of gets hold of you, you learn all these other facets of it,” the cocktail bartender said. “I started to be more taken with it because of the theatricality of it.” Demerath and his wife, Trista, both moved to New York City from Southern California eight years ago to pursue theater. After subletting in Brooklyn, they

ended up in Astoria and have been in the same roomy apartment on 45th Street ever since. Back in California, the couple was known for throwing elaborate parties with over-the-top décor. When they moved to New York, they didn’t let the apartment size stop them from keeping with tradition – but this time, they added an all-out Tiki party to their repertoire. Demerath jokes that due to his background in theater, skills in scenic design and love of rum cocktails, it was almost inevitable that a Tiki party was in his future. “Tiki has been sort of an ongoing journey for me,” Demerath said. “I just absorbed it and learned about it very quickly. It’s not just a cocktail movement OCTOBER 2018 I BOROMAG.COM

for a lot of people – it’s kind of a daily mantra.” Their Tiki party originated three years ago, and it’s grown exponentially since. “The first year was still very impressive to everybody,” Demerath said, “but when I look back at the pictures – we were just laughing about this – in comparison to what we did this year, it was nothing!” The thatched umbrella, hanging masks and PVC pipes from the first year have now transformed into a three-week operation that takes a village to complete for

the big day, when their apartment is truly transformed into a hut in the tropics. “The thing about Tiki is, it can seem to be this sort of silly, kitchy thing that people associate with it,” Demerath explained. “But back in the day, back in the mid-century at the height of it, it was an aesthetic that people took seriously – and now it’s not really seen that way.” Demerath’s hope is to change the perception of Tiki as “tacky,” and introduce people to the laidback camaraderie and theatricality of a culture he’s learned to love.

The weeks leading up to the party are spent decorating. This year, 15-foot wooden beams had to be hoisted up into the apartment from the ground since they couldn’t make the turns in the stairwell. They were then fixed to the ceiling and covered inch to inch with thatch, fish net, plants and other nautical decorations to give the illusion of a real Tiki hut. The original PVC pipes were traded in for real bamboo to make a canopy over their dining table, framed by palm leave curtains and decked out with more tropical plants and Tiki masks. A large, white canvas that hangs in the middle of their living room was covered with an “Ooga Mooga!” sign and mask, surrounded by bird-of-paradise flowers. The canvas, originally intended to be an art project for Demerath, has now turned into a centerpiece for their parties, transformed accordingly for each holiday. “I’ve been more and more taken with [the party] each year we do it,” Demerath said. “We just keep adding to the collection of stuff. This was definitely the biggest.” Demerath usually takes the week off from work (at Upland in Manhattan, where he is the head bartender) leading up to

the party to give his creation his full attention. Cocktails, of course, are a main staple at the Tiki party. The day of, he wakes at 7 a.m., gets in the shower with 20 coconuts and cracks them open for the night’s piña coladas. Someone is a designated “juicer” and spends the morning juicing oranges, grapefruits, lemons and limes. This year, there were five punch bowls filled with elaborate mixed drinks garnished with flowers and dry ice, in addition to a long cocktail menu guests could order from. Demerath spends most of his time during the party in the kitchen as the bartender, with some help from his bartender friends. Trista, who loves to cook, helped with the food, using a neighbor’s kitchen all day as

the prep area. They had shredded Kobe beef rolls, coconut shrimp, tropical fruits, grilled ambrosia, Hawaiian meatballs, plantain chips and guacamole. The Beach Boys and other laidback, tropical sounds set the mood for the evening. They don’t skimp on any detail. “If you do it the way I do it, it’s a very serious thing to you,” Demerath said. “It’s something that’s meant to be fun and fan-

space to keep the decorations throughout the year, although those 15-foot beams still hang from their ceiling today. And from there, Demerath dreams of one day opening his own authentic Tiki bar in New York. “I like to shatter expectations, that’s why I take it so seriously,” he said. We can only hope to one day score an invite to this party of the year.

tastical. When people open the door for the first time and they come in and there’s lagoon lights going off and it just looks so magical – they’re blown away that somebody would go to all this length, but I do it for that reason. I love that sort of reaction.” This year they hosted 80 people, and they plan to keep expanding upon their already magical tradition. They’ve rented a storage
