CONTENTS Dear western Queens,

BRADLEY HAWKS editor-in-chief

I cannot more wholeheartedly wish you a joyous holiday season—regardless of your creed. The media is so full of reasons to doubt humanity that it brings me immense joy to work for a publication that genuinely attempts to celebrate the very best of what this community brings to the world table. Echoing that thought, I hope that you will visit our new online home at QNS.com, which has been lovingly in the works for a long time. Our publisher serves several other outlets, and it is our hope that QNS.com will be the one official source for all things related to Queens. You can find this issue of BORO in its entirety under Digital Editions. We hope you will read, comment and add your own events to our community calendar. Please take some time to stop by the new location of the holiday market, located at Atlas Park at 8000 Cooper Ave. on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. But regardless of how you spend the season, I hope that first and foremost, you celebrate each day with love. As always, please share with us your own personal anecdotes, and send me any tips, comments, news or events to bhawks@boromag.com. Stay warm—and spread love. Gratefully yours, Bradley Hawks

THE ARTS

T

he Astoria Performing Arts Center (APAC) is an awardwinning theater that strives to bring high-quality theater to Astoria while supporting local youth and senior citizens. APAC has already been in existence for a decade and a half, and each season introduces new successes, fresh faces and innovative, high-quality theater. One of the greatest joys of witnessing the development of this excellent center of the arts has been admiring the direction and guidance of the leadership throughout the years. We sat down with the newest member of the APAC team, Executive Director Jessica Bathurst, to discuss her journey and discover exactly what she thinks makes APAC so unique. BORO: What is your earliest memory of live theater? Jessica Bathurst: When I was 8, I loved to create “live theatrical experiences” for my parents and their friends, based largely on a Cabbage Patch Kids album. The first professional theatrical production I can remember seeing was “Into The Woods” when I was 11—it came on tour through my hometown. It was magical. I wore that cast album out! BORO: When did you realize you had a gift for helping encourage and create theater? JB: When I was in college, I had the opportunity to work with a student-run theater company called Mask & Bauble. We did everything: acting, directing, design, producing. I produced the fall musical and a festival of student-written oneacts, and I loved it. Producing in college was the first time I had taken a written work from inception to full production, and from then on, I was hooked.

The

Play

is the

Thing zation that both produced professional artistic work of the highest caliber and had long-standing community programs serving both students and seniors. You don't often find that combination in one organization. Also, I was blown away by “In the Bones” and “Merrily We Roll Along,” two very different productions that stayed with me long after I had left the theater.

BORO: What drew you to the APAC?

BORO: What are some of your fingerprints people might expect under your direction?

JB: I was drawn to APAC for the fact that it was a community-based organi-

JB: As the executive director, I consider myself to be the “host” for

all APAC events—whether you've come to see a show, participate in Senior Stars, or have your child in our Summer Stars program, I hope that you feel welcome and at home in our space. I want to meet everyone who walks through our doors, and I want those who attend our programming to feel that they can talk to me about what they've seen, and the work that APAC does. BORO: Theater is such a collaboration ... what are some of the best things about working with the artistic director, Dev Bondarin?

BORO: Tell us a little about your professional background. JB: For most of my career, I've been working in arts administration at various organizations in Brooklyn, where I live. I've worked at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), St. Ann's Warehouse and the Brooklyn Center for the Performing at Brooklyn College. I have also worked in academia; I've just spent the last year as the acting head of the MFA in performing arts management at Brooklyn College, and I'm the co-author of a textbook, “Performing Arts Management: A Handbook of Professional Practices. BORO: APAC has been nurturing new works. Can you tell us a little about the new series?

JB: Dev is an incredible artist, first and foremost. Her unflagging enthusiasm and dedication to her work make her an excellent partner. We've worked together before, so we have a good sense of each other's strengths and weaknesses. (One of those weaknesses is a shared love of giant banana splits.)

support of Astoria-based artists, and it also wouldn't exist without the audiences who return again and again to see our latest production. We play a vital role in Astoria by providing innovative programming to a community that wants this kind of work in their neighborhood.

BORO: Why is APAC so important in a community like Astoria?

BORO: What does Astoria offer that an audience may miss in a Manhattan theater?

JB: I think it's vital that every community have art that is made by and for that community. APAC would not exist without the hard work and

JB: Intimacy. A sense of connection with the staff and the artists. The chance to see us continue to develop right in your backyard.

JB: Both Dev and I are particularly interested in new works; in fact, APAC's last two fall plays have both been world premieres. Our next production will be a series of short plays and musicals called Astoria Stories, performing in February 2016. Writers will apply for the program, and those chosen will be paired with a location in Astoria and will write a 10-minute piece about that location. Those pieces will be combined into a full evening of short performances. on Korean has officially closed its doors to make way for Hinomaru Ko, the child of the delicious ramen den from Ditmars. The 16-seat space is exponentially more intimate, but still turns out those savory bowls of ramen you have come to know and love at their other location. The Grand Avenue spot will feature a selection of tonkatsu ramen dishes, which are made with a rich, decadent, pork bone-based broth— as well as a brighter, chicken-based ramen dishes alongside a carefully edited selection of tapas. Chinese broccoli dipped in tempura batter and then deep-fried is always a terrific starter. Pork gyoza are prepared in-house, and satisfy as some of the neighborhood’s most flavorsome dumplings. Presently,

10 I BOROMAG.COM I DECEMBER 2015

nikuman buns are only stuffed with thick slabs of chashu pork—but they create one of the most exceptional $4 sliders in town. And few places can even hold a candle to Hinomaru’s Age Takoyaki, which are fried spheres of dough filled with octopus, drizzled with okonomiyaki sauce and layered with bonito flakes. Marinated fried chicken is available in snackable portions, and veggies are offered as seaweed salads, spring rolls or kimchi. And handful of simple sushi offerings are available, as well as a platter of sashimi. But with the winter chill slowly creeping in, we recommend the Hinomaru or the miso ramen. Always remember that once you have slurped up that final noodle from your bowl of broth and personalized toppings—and who doesn’t adore a fish cake shaped like a monkey’s head—you can always holler, “kaedama!” for a replenishing of noodles. And this spot is even offering delivery. Now, that’s oishi! 42-06 30th Avenue Astoria, NY 11103 718-777-8838

REAL ESTATE

Q

ueens has always been Manhattan’s reliable younger sister, watching over her from the East. While in Manhattan’s shadow Queens may not have always appeared quite as glamorous—the reality is that she is the most ethnically diverse urban area in the world. Lonely Planet even named Queens the #1 travel destination for 2015. And did you know that if the five boroughs were considered to be individual cities, Queens would rank as the fourth most populous city in the nation—after Los Angeles, Chicago, and Brooklyn. We even have Brooklyn beat when it comes to space, with Queens ranking as the largest in land area of the five boroughs. In a market that has been under the spotlight, steadily growing in popularity—especially in recent years—the task of finding a place to call home demands the use of a skilled and capable broker now more than ever before. So whether you are looking to snag something shiny in Hunters Point South, or an individual home with a miniature manicured yard on Ditmars, finding someone you can really trust is essential. BORO sat down with Emanuel Rodriquez at Douglas Elliman to get some advice on how to tackle New York’s often daunting market. BORO: What attracted you to real estate? EMANUEL RODRIGUEZ: I’ve been in sales my entire life. I wanted to get into a business that could utilize my unique skill set, which includes guiding people through 18 I BOROMAG.COM I DECEMBER 2015

making difficult decisions. Real estate sales is one of the largest and most difficult decisions you will make in your entire life. BORO: How do you try to stand out from the field? ER: I don’t try to think about other brokers. I genuinely care about what I do. It’s really not just about the money. I really want to connect with my clients and make sure they are getting what they want and need. BORO: Describe an ideal client… ER: I look for someone who is excited. Someone who has ideas, is creative, and unafraid to make a difficult decision. While, of course, I hope to have clients who have the money to complete the transactions, I really want someone who is open-

minded—someone who appreciates the process—because it’s not easy. Someone who’s going to enjoy my company. And someone who is going to be flexible and realistic. Nothing in New York City falls within an average person’s expectations. BORO: What are some of the greatest challenges in the current market? ER: Everyone says of the New York market that it moves really fast, and you have to make important decisions quickly. That turns it into something that is no longer fun. It makes it dreadful, because most people need time to make that kind of a decision. BORO: How far in advance should you start looking for a rental? ER: You should start looking physi-

cally one month before you are deciding to move into a new rental. You should see as many places as you can. Ideally, try to see at least 5 to 10 apartments a week or more if it’s an area I which you aren’t that familiar. Pictures and descriptions can always be deceiving. But if you find something you genuinely love, be ready to move on it. BORO: What should you have ready before you start looking? ER: Try to have your finances in place. Every building is different. Have letters of pre-approval, bank statements, employment verification. BORO: Can you give us a list of your top five things to take into consideration when seeking a new apartment? ER: 1) Know your budget. Your income needs to be 40 times greater than your monthly rent. 2) Know your expectations. A studio is not a one bedroom 3) Know the location. You can’t just move somewhere because it’s affordable. I wouldn’t live too far from a subway. If you are a driver and really want free parking, then visit the location five or six times at different times of day to get a sense of parking availability. 4) Know the Area. Check out grocery stores, pharmacies, and restaurants. 5) Know your building. Know what type of building you want to live in. Some are great for singles, others are terrific for families. If you call me, I can check everything from finances to structure damage, repairs, eleva-

tors, rodents, and information about the management company. BORO: What are some things people often forget to check inside an apartment? ER: Always check the water pressure in the shower and how long it takes for the water to heat. How is the lighting in the apartment? Where is there storage space and closets? How many electrical outlets are there in each room? BORO: What are the benefits of working with a broker? ER: If you work with the right broker, s/he will take your criteria and expectations and really help you make a reality out of it. We can all go online and look at apartments, but you need someone who really studies the market. Even though I work with many clients, it is really important to me to make sure all my clients are getting 100% of my attention and commitment. BORO: What is a standard broker’s fee? ER: You can expect to pay 15% of the annual rent. But that fee isn’t just getting you into apartments. Ideally, it is building a relationship with a broker. When I rent you an apartment, it is my honest hope that we will be friends for a long time. Trust is priceless. 47-37 Vernon Boulevard Long Island City, NY 11101 (917) 386-6164 emanuel.rodriguez@ elliman.com DECEMBER 2015 I BOROMAG.COM I 19

THE ARTS 32 I BOROMAG.COM I DECEMBER 2015

Story BY TARA GENEN

I

started Sweet Little Bee Stings when my daughter, Violet, was born last year.

I've always been into the "boho chic" look. Beaded sandals, heaps of jewelry, graphic prints—but it wasn't until I started adding “urban turbans” that my look felt complete. Now that I have a daughter of my own to dress up, I can't think of a better accessory for giving her that extra bit of edge. Hip mommy = hip baby. I source materials from around the globe and handcraft each piece with love right here in Astoria, New York. Since starting the shop I've added Drooldanas, Paci Clips and, most recently, toddler sunglass cases. Mitten clips are coming soon for the winter season. Basically, whatever I see a need for, I make. Most of the time my mama friends see what I put on Violet, and I end up making them for Violet's little friends, too. Since opening my Etsy shop last Mother's Day, I've shipped orders to San Diego, California, Ohio, Maryland, New York and New Jersey. I try to find material that other merchants don't have. And I constantly rotate in new fabrics. We've lived here in Astoria for the last five years and have always enjoyed all the neighborhood has to offer. I look forward to sharing my designs with local shops, and mamas and papas alike. As a matter of fact, there is a possible pop-up shop in the talks for late December at The Brass Owl. etsy.com/shop/sweetlittlebeestings Instagram: sweetlittlebeestings Use code BORO10 now through Dec. 31 for 10 percent off your order. THE ARTS

The Animal Within J

ake Genen is an Astoria-based graphic designer who has created a vast family of animorphic tintype portraits—essentially vintage-style prints of animal characters portraying human emotions in stereotypically human situations. Much like C.S. Lewis in “The Chronicles of Narnia,” Genen’s assorted cast of characters achieves a wildly universal appeal and relatability through transposing non-human beings into familiar situations. As winter approaches and the creatures and critters of New York City’s parks retreat until the spring, perhaps Genen’s work illuminates an alternate reality that reveals something about their true nature—maybe even our own, as well. www.jakegstudios.com

If

you live in Astoria, or pass through Chelsea, or crave a daily cup o’ joe, or enjoy an occasional bagel wit’ a schmear, chances are you know of Brooklyn Bagel. Despite the name—which actually harkens to the style of bagels made within— the wildly successful company is based out of Astoria, and even opened an upscale café on Ditmars known as 60 Beans, serving high-end java, cold brews and pastries in a gorgeously designed space. This past month, the überhot coffee spot took a brave leap forward, donning a new moniker and concept that includes more than just coffee. Renamed 60 Beans Kitchen & Coffee, the space now offers a lovingly edited selection of charcuterie, small plates, salads, freshly made

pasta, hearty entrées and a few sweet endings. Though the front display case still illuminates a selection of delectable gourmet doughnuts from the wildly popular Dough, visitors interested in more substantial fare will be pleasantly surprised by the offering of New American cuisine. Owners Peter Voyiatzis and John Rocchio hired chef/partner Domenick Gianfrancesco, formerly of Craft and Craftbar NYC, to lead the kitchen. Gaining unanimously favorable reviews and high praise in its soft opening, his new menu is poised to shine brightly on the Astoria restaurant scene. Begin with a board of homemade pickled radishes and chicken liver pâté, whole grain mustard or wagyu smoked beef tongue with black garlic for sharing. Roasted beets dressed with pistachio and pesto offer DECEMBER 2015 I BOROMAG.COM I 43

an earthy but light reprise as a second course. A salad of bitter green frisĂŠe dressed with smoked croutons and anchovy vinaigrette is astonishingly vibrant. But the real star of the show is the homemade pasta, which is prepared daily by hand downstairs. Toothsome rigatoni arrives blanketed in a bolognese of lamb, which is lightened with a fennel gremolata, then dusted with a whisper of pecorino shavings that melt into the medley like snowflakes on an open palm. Yes, the pasta is precisely that transcendent. Cider and wine accentuate the selection of coffees and teas, so begin with a glass of spirits and finish your meal with a delicate macchiato. PINTS Christine Cullinane-Haber has been curating the Sweet Afton Holiday Mini-Market for the past six years.

“I wanted to create a market where local artists and designers could sell their work, free of charge—there’s no vendors fee,” she explains.

“We have a great raffle during the market,” continues CullinaneHaber, “in which all proceeds go to Concern Worldwide, a charity that is very dear to us at Sweet Afton. All vendors participating in the market donate one item for the raffle. The prizes are fantastic, and it's for a great cause.” Brunch is served at Sweet Afton as usual, and the bar will offer happy hour drink specials until 5 p.m. This year’s holiday market is going to be on Sunday, Dec. 20, from noon to 5 p.m. It’s the ideal spot for holiday multitasking. Where else can you shop, meet artists and enjoy a hearty breakfast washed down with a pint? Sweet Afton is located in Astoria at 30-09 34th St. This year’s vendors will include the following:

FOOD + DRINK Story + Images by Bradley Hawks

It might be that time of year when you find yourself covered in flour, licking batter from a wooden spoon, surrounded by a cloud of confectioner’s sugar. While cookies and baked treats are certainly a hallmark of the holidays, Astorians can enjoy some of the finest pastries in the world all year long.

Whether you are craving a raspberry jamstamped thumbprint or a honey-drenched thumb of touloumbes, a custard-filled phyllo stack of galaktoboureko or a luxurious wedge of fresh baklava, this is the emporium for all things delicious.

If you haven’t been yet, you should plan a visit this winter to Artopolis Bakery—one of the city’s finest Greek bakeries, tucked into a Mediterranean enclave of small shops off of 31st Street near 24th Avenue. Men in suits dunk cookies into steaming cups of coffee at wire tables, while families choose among every cookie imaginable hidden behind white veils and tucked into glass cupboards. Colorful fruits soaked in honey are available by the jar, and Jordan almonds sit in rows of canisters offering every color of the rainbow.

Greek women shuffle in and out of the kitchen, bearing trays of cheese pies and spanakopita. Tartes and macarons of every variety shine from behind glass showcases. But don’t worry about your lack of Greek knowledge—signs are posted above many of the treats, explaining their history, ingredients and cultural significance. It’s the kind of schooling you can sink your teeth into. 23-18 31st St., Astoria, NY www.artopolis.net DECEMBER 2015 | BOROMAG.COM | 47

IMPACT

‘Tis the season… to be

GIVING By Gabrielle C. Sherb

When beginning to write Impact Astoria in March 2015, I wanted to give back to the community that has been my home for close to a decade. Over these last several months I have gained so much more than anticipated. Thank you the Queens Library (Steinway Branch), Councilman Costa Constantinides, CIANA, Astoria Park Alliance, Central Astoria Local Development Corporation, Dapple Baby and Assemblywoman Aravella Simotas for your time and for allowing me to share with BORO readers how they can make a difference from the shores of Astoria Park to the steps of the Capital in Albany. As we enter the holiday season, there is exponentially increased thought toward giving back and supporting those who need 48 | BOROMAG.COM | DECEMBER 2015

it most. But it can be more than a once a year impulse. Giving back to the community and caring about your neighbors is something that we can do all year round—in small ways that give big meaning. If you’re looking to make this holiday season the beginning of your commitment to Impacting Astoria, here are a few ways you can do it:

Give the gift of literacy at P.S. 17Q on December 9th, 16th, or 23rd 28-37 29th St, Astoria, NY 11102 (718) 278-1220 Help keep others warm with Housing Works, and sort through donated clothing that will go to the homeless on December 9th 48-49 35th St, Long Island City, NY 11101 (718) 786-6160)

Pamper a senior citizen at the Sunnyside Community Services Beauty Spa on December 11th 43-31 39th St, Sunnyside, NY 11104 (718) 784-6173 Make gingerbread houses with the children of the Jacob Riis Settlement Houses on December 19th 10-25 41st Avenue, Long Island City, NY 11101 (718) 784-7447 Western Queens is a place where all faiths, ethnicities and cultures can thrive. I hope you’ll take this time to decide how you’ll be Impacting Astoria in 2016. Wishing you and your loved ones peace, happiness, and health!

Winter is finally here, and with it the arrival of a multitude of holiday traditions near and dear to us all. As our neighborhoods are slowly being transformed by ropes of twinkling lights, candles and pine, I can’t help but reminisce about the Decembers of my youth.

Dance the World Nutcracker Festival

Of course, I loved the special treats, songs and moments to catch up with friends and family, but as a performer, I knew the season also meant hauntingly beautiful productions of “A Christmas Carol,” losing myself in the strains of Handel’s “Messiah,” and repeated viewings of one of the most family-friendly and oft-attended ballets, “The Nutcracker.”

Xochipilli Dance Ensamble year around the globe are any indication, I am certainly not the only one. “The Nutcracker” has become such a regular part of the holiday season that many dance companies seek to offer new and fresh interpretations of this classic. New York will see many versions this year, ranging from traditional to modern to hip-hop, and we here in western Queens are fortunate to host a version every bit as diverse as our beloved borough. JP Dance Group, led by Artistic Director Julie Petrusak, is a contemporary dance company dedicated to promoting diversity in dance and aiming to make the art of dance accessible to all corners of our city. Founded in 2013 and based in Harlem, JP Dance Group provides free dance performances to 2,500 children and seniors each year though a partnership with Riverbank State Park’s Young People Performance Series. This season, JP Dance Group is expanding its reach by bringing a unique and exciting production to Long Island City, aptly titled “Dance the World Nutcracker Festival.” In an effort to highlight many forms of cultural dance from around the world, Petrusak is showcasing a variety of dance groups from around New York. Set to Duke Ellington’s jazz arrangement of Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker Suite,” Act 1 opens on a hoppin’ holiday party in a New York City brownstone at the height of the roaring ‘20s. At the party, Clara receives a nutcracker doll from her mysterious Aunt Drossa Myer. Little does she know that the doll has a magical spell cast upon it. Later that night, the Nutcracker conjures a magical snowstorm that carries Clara on a magical adventure to the 1922 World’s Fair in Rio De Janiero. In Act 2, the World’s Fair, audiences will be treated to performances by a host of New York City’s cultural dance companies. Program A (Tuesday, Dec. 15, 8 p.m./Friday Dec. 17, 8 p.m.)

FOOD & DRINK

T

ake a daytime stroll along Astoria’s Grand Avenue (the old moniker for 30th Avenue), and Astorians gather ‘round the clock to sip frappes and nosh on panini and salad every day of the calendar year. While Greek eateries and Euro lounges aren’t nearly as prominent along the street as they were 10 years ago, one lounge in particular has mastered the impressive transition from daylight coffee stop and creperie, to sunset sushi and steak, to weekend DJ dance floor. A 24-hour camera on Flo Lounge would reveal a clientele of every conceivable background meeting for every occasion imaginable. So BORO sat down with manager Sounni de Fontenay to sample some of the cuisine that keeps customers returning during the day—and to learn a little about the nightlife that pulses at the heart of Flo. “We are probably most popular for our crepes,” explained de Fontenay, “and

52 I BOROMAG.COM I DECEMBER 2015

GO WITH THE

FLO

also our sushi.” While French and Japanese may first seem an unlikely pairing, in reality the combination balances for a perfect meal. Service begins with a basket of warm pita and whole chickpeas tossed with minced onions in olive oil. A beginning course of sushi is a great one for sharing—perhaps the baja roll, a maki of shrimp tempura and fresh tuna topped with an

umami miso tomato salsa, crispy wonton flakes and a drizzle of eel sauce. A juicy grilled hanger steak arrives nestled beneath a crown of arugula, served with plump steak fries and chimichurri sauce. The Nicoise salad is topped with exquisitely crisp-skinned salmon, and comes dressed with a tangy Dijon vinaigrette. But the French burger is a spin on a classic that should not be missed. A patty of 100 percent grass-fed beef is topped with a heaping mound of shredded cheddar, dollops of tomato jam, a brushing of remoulade and finished with a haystack of
