STREET STYLE

NICE & NEUTRAL BY MARIE TORIO @PHOTOSBYMARIETORIO

s I walked around the streets of Astoria on a chilly day off looking for western Queens’ most fashionable residents, I noticed a common thread with locals’ looks: everyone seemed to be rocking neutral tones. One fashionista sported an all-black outfit with a fun pop of yellow, while one man let his patterned scarf and mint green glasses shine by choosing understated pieces. People wore relaxed looks as they ran errands or took a break, including peacoats, fashionable scarves, leather jackets, vests, hoodies and boots. Take a look at some of our favorite ensembles.

A

Grigoris (@grigoris_hanelis) was visiting Astoria from Greece when I spotted him. Even though he had his hands full with Starbucks, he was still nice enough to stop and chat for a bit. He said his style was “very street.” The tapered ankle pants and leather jacket over a black shirt and zip-up sweatshirt gave his look some street edge.

6

DECEMBER 2018

Sabrina (@brinamaroo) is a special ed teacher who was enjoying her day off. She called her fashion sense “classic and professional.” Sabrina’s dark-colored outfit, complete with a subtle chevron pattern on her coat, was nicely paired with a pop of yellow from her crossbody bag. Steve (@old_pancake), who works for the VA, was walking down Broadway when I ran into him. He said that his style is “presentable,” with “lots of flannel but hip." His look gave me all the fall feels with his lace-up boots, sweater, quilted vest and scarf — definitely hip in my book.

Astoria resident Gigi (@gigidumornay) was running some errands when I noticed her look. She described her style as “trendy but laidback.” I loved the fact that even though she was getting things done, her outfit was put-together with her skinny jeans, ankle booties and belted coat. Who says you can’t be stylish and run errands? Sam (@sam_suave) was enjoying his break when I bumped into him. I was attracted to the fact that he was rocking a floral sweatshirt, khakis and a peacoat, and it all came together in an effortlessly stylish way. He described his style as “casual/trendy.” No argument here! DECEMBER 2018 I BOROMAG.COM

GIFT GUIDE

2018 WESTERN QUEENS GIFT GUIDE The best picks from local businesses BY CLAIRE LEADEN

There are two types of people in this world: those who love holiday gift shopping, and those who hate it. But no matter how you feel about it, it has to get done. Something that may help lighten the load is knowing you are supporting amazing local business owners while you do it, because shopping local actually allows money to recirculate within the local economy significantly more than buying from chains does. In order to make shopping a little easier with a wide range of gift choices, plus encourage community investment, we’ve rounded up the best items from throughout Astoria, Long Island City and Sunnyside. The recommendations come right from the experts themselves: the shop owners and managers! So, before you click in an order from a certain A-named shopping conglomerate, try checking out the one-of-a-kind choices all around you:

1. Matted LIC 46-36 VERNON BLVD., LONG ISLAND CITY

14

Each page showcases different lettering styles and fast facts, great for writers and designers alike. S’well Martini Set ($95): You may have known that S’well bottles keep water cold for 24 hours, but did you ever think how helpful that would be for cocktails? Their brand-new barware set will do just that, ideal for your drink-mixing friends. The Jewish Wisdom Ball® ($19.95): Any celebrators of Hanukkah will surely appreciate The Jewish Wisdom Ball® — which Drimer calls “absolutely hysterical.” A new take on the classic Magic 8 Ball, the creators promise “20 answers imbued with the vast wisdom of our heritage … and once in a while you could be told to put on a sweater.”

Matted LIC is the oldest retail business on Vernon Boulevard in Long Island City, and though you may recognize it (either from walking by or from its name) as a picture framing shop, they also have one of the best gift selections around. Owner Donna Drimer loves the holidays, which is clear from her curated selection of unique goods for everyone on your list. They also gift wrap and label for free during the season, so you don’t have to worry about getting that perfect crease in your wrapping paper on a bulky item. Leave it to someone at Matted LIC! Here are some Drimer’s favorite items in the shop this year: Imported Speciality Food Items from L’Epicurien: From onion jam to truffle mayonnaise, these delicious gourmet food items come directly from France and range in price from $8.95 to $25. The store has been carrying them for the past four years and they are beloved — perfect for a hostess gift if you’re heading to a holiday party, or for the cooking gourmand in your life. “Font of Knowledge” Journal ($16.99): Drimer is already restocking these special journals because of how well they’ve sold.

2. Yoseka Stationary 4806 41ST ST., SUNNYSIDE

Only a few months old, Yoseka Stationary is a breath of fresh air off Greenpoint Avenue in Sunnyside, supplying high-quality stationary items that go well beyond pens, paper and pretty planners. “Stationary is more than just pens and paper,” owner Neil Ni said. “You use it to organize your desk, and your life. You can make it your own style, whether fun or cute or classic. We want people to feel happy when they use anything.” He walked us through all of the giftable items at the store: The Perfect Travel Journal: If you have someone in your life who has a trip coming up, get them a journal that was designed specifically with traveling in mind. Yoseka is well-stocked with Traveler’s Company Notebooks, from a Japanese company that creates leather-bound travel journals with different changeable inserts you can swap out depending on the trip, and choose the organization and layout style you like best. There is a size specifically made to hold a passport as well ($42) as well as the traditional size (ranging from $50-60). Fountain Penning, for Beginners or Experts: One of the first things you’ll notice as you enter Yoseka is the wide selection of fountain pens. There are pens specifically for beginners ($13-28, from a range of brands), if you have a friend who is just getting into penmanship or cal-

ligraphy (which they offer classes for as well!). If you know someone who already loves that writing style, there are beautiful copper and brass pens from Taiwan design shop ystudio that change over time due to finger contact on the metal (for around $70), and even a pen custom designed in a unique color designated to Yoseka that is made to order from Japan for $140 (from Sen Handmade). Desk Design: If you’re gifting someone who’s career-driven or an entrepreneur (you know, those people who feel like their desk is their happy place), you can find their next beloved item at Yoseka. HMM Scissors ($45) are sleek and have a magnetic base so they stand upright, and are a two-in-one item with a box cutter as well. There is also a wide variety of both professional and more fun, quirky pens ($2-3) to add to their pencil cups. Local Creations: Yoseka also carries unique items from Queens-based artists. Check out the custom ceramics from Miwa Neishi (ranging from $35-85) and adorable cat cards from Ping Hatta ($5.50 each), on Instagram and in the shop.

3. Book Culture LIC 26-09 JACKSON AVE., LONG ISLAND CITY

GIFT GUIDE

Book Culture opened its LIC outpost last year, and has become just as much of a go-to spot as its other city neighborhood locations. LIC General Manager Althea Lamel gives us her best gift picks for the season — book and otherwise! “Becoming” by Michelle Obama ($32.50): “This is one of the season's hottest releases that we think everyone should read! If you liked her as a First Lady, you'll love her even more in this revealing new memoir,” Lamel said. “Perfect gift for your mother, your best friend, your brother, your daughter's teacher — pretty much everyone will like this book!” “Friday Black” by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah ($14.99): “If you're shopping for someone who reads a lot, try this debut collection of short stories that booksellers are raving about,” Lamel said. “It will give you chills. One of our managers describes is as ‘the best short story collection since “Tenth of December.” “Friday Black” punches you right in the gut and commands your attention from page one. I could use plenty of terms you've heard before to describe this collection — fierce, unflinching, ferocious, unique — but none of them suffice to carry the urgency with which I say that you need to read this book.’ Also a great gift for anyone who's worked in retail!” Odell Octopus ($25 - 90): “We love Odell Octopus! She's tangled herself around pretty much every inch of the bookstore at point or another. Kids and adults alike will love this cuddly cephalopod,” she said. Thymes Candles ($14 - 32): “The holidays are always around the corner with a Thymes Frasier Fir candle. These candles are universally loved among staff here at Book Culture, and we tend to have almost as many candle opinions as we have book opinions!”

the Beastie Boys, written by Mike D and ADROCK, with contributions from Amy Poehler, Colson Whitehead, Spike Jonze, Wes Anderson and Luc Sante. Perfect for: music lovers.” “The Lost Words” by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris ($35): “Artist Jackie Morris and writer Robert Macfarlane teamed up on this beautiful collection, offering an illustrated poem as tribute to 20 ‘lost words’ ejected from the Oxford Junior Dictionary in their last revision,” Beach explained. “Equal parts picture book, poetry collection and art object. Perfect for: word nerds, art lovers, nature lovers.”

If you have multiple book lovers in your life, Astoria Bookshop offers another local spot for shopping. Owner Lexi Beach shares her must-reads below: "Stranger Things: Worlds Turned Upside Down” by Gina McIntyre, Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer ($36): “This behind-thescenes look at the Netflix series is perfectly designed to look like an tattered library book, an artifact of the time period when ‘Stranger Things’ takes place,” Beach said. “It includes D&D player character sheets for each of the boys, a fold-out map of Hawkins, IN, and a hidden drawing on the inside of the jacket. Perfect for: fans of ‘Stranger Things,’ '80s nostalgia lovers.” “Harry Potter: A History of Magic” ($39.99): “You've got until the end of January to head into Manhattan to see the exhibit at the New-York Historical Society, but this gorgeous volume will preserve the magic on your bookshelf forever. Perfect for: Potterheads.” “Beastie Boys Book” by Michael Diamond and Adam Horovitz ($50): “The definitive, fully illustrated history of

Who says you can’t add living things to your shopping list this holiday? OK, pets may be a little much, but plants make excellent decor, are good for your health and are a lot easier to take care of. And Brittany Josephina, retail manager at My City Plants in LIC, knows which ones are especially easy to take care of for us city dwellers: Pothos ($65): “Looking to gift a plant newbie? Our Pothos Tika makes an excellent gift for plant beginners,” Josephina said. “As the most common and most recommended plant in America, pothos are durable, easy to take care of and improve air quality. That’s a three-inone benefit that cannot be beat.” Sansevieria ($120): “Nicknamed one of the toughest indoor plants, sansevierias are undeniably low maintenance. In essence, our Sansevieria Windowsill is an awesome gift for those who forget to water plants. This is because sansevierias needs water approximately every two to three weeks,” she said. ZZ Plant ($85): “Give the gift of shine and greenery with our ZZ Plant Classico. The ZZ Plant Classico is potted in a 100 perfect recyclable self-watering pot making it the perfect companion plant for the busy person.” Aloe ($55): “Traditionally known as a healer plant, aloe plants contain antioxidant and antibacterial properties. Leave an unforgettable impression by gifting our Aloe Dyad to loved ones with this therapeutic plant.” DECEMBER 2018 I BOROMAG.COM

CRAFTER BY ALLISON KRIDLE

f you struggle with anxiety and stress (you’re not alone), you may understand the need for an outlet to help you cope with stress or take your mind off of life’s troubles. For Astoria resident Corrado Alicata, knitting was a way to escape nega-

tivity and join a community of welcoming crafters and creatives like himself. “Last year around this time I was in a difficult bullying situation on a [Broadway] tour, so I ended up knitting a lot and delving into it,” Alicata said. “It’s a good way for people to destress and fight anxiety.”

Alicata taught himself how to knit using various YouTube channels and quickly took to the craft. He knitted 26 pieces for last year’s Christmas presents and did not stop there. “The day I got back [from Christmas holiday] I met a famous knitter named Kristy Glass, and I met her at a yarn store random-

ly. She wanted to interview me for her channel, and I didn’t design anything until I was featured on her channel,” Alicata said. Glass’ YouTube channel, Kristy Glass Knits, certainly helped Alicata emerge in the spotlight and in the knitting community considering she has around 21,000 subscribers. The interview aired last March, which many knitters know as “Manch” — the month celebrating men who knit. “[There are not that many] men in the knitting community, and they have really started to make a name for themselves and bringing a different design to the community,” Alicata said. Alicata is the face of all of his designs and patterns which are showcased on his Ravelry page, called Corrado Lark. Ravelry is a website for the crochet and knitting community where crafters share their pieces, sell patterns and open discussions about all things crochet or knitting related. Alicata sells everything from cozy hand-warmer patterns to creative cowl designs on Ravelry. “I love knitting cowls. You can learn and experiment with different techniques especially in round," he said, referring to knitting with circular needles. "My favorite [pattern] right now is my ‘Back in the Sun’ shawl. That one was really a fun knit, and I’m really proud of it,” Alicata said. For each featured pattern, Alicata gives the viewer a backstory behind each curated piece. For his colorful “Back in the Sun” shawl he said, “I called the shawl a ‘guy’ on Instagram while posting a teaser late this summer. In one of the comments, a man who had always thought of shawls as female or feminine thanked me for (unintentionally) changing his perception

on shawls. I hadn’t put much thought into it before, but now that I have, I believe shawls can be both male and female, because we all can knit. Knitting is something that is inclusive, not exclusive.” Even though Alicata treats his knitting career as a full-time job (he knits every day and spends four days a week editing and designing), he is also continuing his job as an actor. Currently, Alicata is working as a background cop in the show “Gotham.” “There are slow days on set where you can knit. Everyone on set including [actors who are ex-cops], they know me as the knitter cop,” Alicata said. As it turns out, Astoria is the ideal neighborhood for Alicata’s acting and knitting career. He uses his home environment to exhibit his knitted goods and business; and as we all know, Queens is the best place for a picturesque backdrop. “I grew up in smaller town and Astoria kinda has that small-town vibe [that I was looking for], but it’s so close to the city. I take most of my product photos right down the block from me or in Astoria Park and that’s the aesthetic I was looking for,” Alicata said. In the future Alicata hopes to collaborate with even more knitters and small businesses, teach children how to knit and travel to different yarn stores to teach classes. “I’m inspired by the yarn. I like playing with a lot of different colors, and I just let the yarn take me anywhere,” Alicata said.

GIFT GUIDE

PETS AND PILATES BY DANIEL GROGAN

Astoria resident Eileen Klugh knows how strong of a bond people have with their pets, whether their animal is a dog, cat, lizard, turtle, fish or even chinchilla. That’s why Klugh immortalizes pets in embroidered form via her online store Keen Thread Studio (keenthreadstudio. com) and Etsy shop (etsy.com/ shop/keenthepeach).

W

32

ell, to be fair, she has only embroidered likenesses of dogs, cats and chinchilla so far, but she’s open to stitching other species. “I worked on two chinchillas a couple months ago,” she said. “They were really fun. I’d love to push the limit on the definition of ‘pet.’”

DECEMBER 2018

S It all started with a “grandfatherly” mutt named Tucker, the beloved dog of her girlfriend’s family. “I did my first pet portrait about a year ago, my girlfriend’s family dog,” Klugh said. “I did that portrait for their Christmas present. It was really fun to do because it got my artistic, creative brain firing … I had a lot of fun with it.” It wasn’t long before fellow pet owners were reaching out to Klugh in the hopes that they, too, might have their animals stitched in unbelievable detail. “Somebody else asked me to do another dog, and then another, and then another, and now I’m doing cats, which I love,” she said.

And truly, the detail is unbelievable. Klugh is not simply creating a general portrait of a breed; instead, she captures the specifics of each individual animal flawlessly. The odd brush of brown on one Beagle’s forehead, the especially long tongue of a certain Irish Wolfhound, and the white fur that tufts out of one cat’s extra pointy ears are all captured accurately on the canvas. Of course, the one aspect of these images that must succeed above all others is the eyes — the place where the embroideries transcend flatness and become dimensional. It is here that it seems Klugh spends the most time. “Doing the eyes is my favorite part … bringing life to them.” DECEMBER 2018 I BOROMAG.COM

The personality of each animal is remarkably captured in the eyes of each portrait: Tucker’s far-off stare gives him a noble, wise appearance; the yellowish-green eyes of a white cat make it look cunning and devious; a little Chihuahua’s bulbous brown eyes are sleepy yet attentive. For as much skill as Klugh has in this art form, she is equally adept in a field that seldom goes hand-in-hand with the leisurely activity of embroidering: fitness, specifically yoga and Pilates. Having gone to school for dance, Klugh was no stranger to complex movement, but it wasn’t until she discovered a particular method of yoga called Anya

34

DECEMBER 2018

that she became interested in the ancient Indian discipline. “I didn’t really enjoy yoga before, until I found a method that really sparked my creativity,” Klugh said. “It has a nice intellectual aspect to it.” After familiarizing herself with yoga, Klugh branched out into Pilates, which she has since developed an equal fondness for. Klugh divides much of her time between these two vocations: embroidery and private fitness instruction. While the two practices might seem completely different, Klugh said that both needlework and yoga bring her to the same mental state.

“What I like about both fitness, when you do it right, and the embroidery, is it kind of simultaneously gets you into your head but out of your thoughts,” she said. “It requires a lot of focus and a lot of attention, both of them. You can’t let yourself get distracted; you have to stay present.” She said that becoming so focused on each of these activities, “it lets every unnecessary thought fade to the background; every worry about what am I going to do for dinner, when am I going to get coffee next, what’s going on tomorrow, stress about Amazon moving in, stress about rent, about bills — it lets all that, for a couple of hours, fade to the background and I can really strongly focus on being present.” The holiday season is a particularly busy time for Klugh, as many people are interested in gifting their loved ones a handcrafted image of their pet or a private session of yoga or Pilates, but she is always looking for more clients. “I definitely don’t like to be doing only one thing,” she said. There is still some time before the holiday season comes to a close, so consider reaching out to Klugh; she will happily help you give the perfect gift. As she said, “If you want personal training or a pet portrait, call me.” Or hey — why not both?

EXPLORE YOUR BORO

WINDOW Shopping By Alejandra O’Connell-Domenech

You don’t have to take the subway to Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue to see a spectacular window display this holiday season; just take a walk down Broadway right here in Astoria.

During the fall, the storefront window of Vardiman Eyewear on 34-18 Broadway is decorated with a hanging pair of glasses, surrounded by forest creatures in beds of red and yellow leaves. Shortly after Thanksgiving, white and blue papier-mâché Christmas trees dangle from the ceiling. Each holiday gets its own special installation.

38

DECEMBER 2018

“He touches something and he turns it into something unbelievable,” Janet Arcila, the owner and manager of Vardiman Eyewear, said of 28-year-old Onesis Castillo. “I don’t know where he get these ideas.” Castillo, her Dominican-born neighbor, has been creating seasonal pieces of art for the store for the past five years, which have caught a lot of eyes from patients and passersby alike.

installation featuring painted calaveras (skulls) five years ago that wowed Arcila so much that she kept inviting him back to create more work. He has kept up the tradition and painted skulls for every Day of the Dead since. Castillo hopes that he can inspire others who might be afraid to pursue their passions. “You only need to want to do something in order to do it,” said Castillo. DECEMBER 2018 I BOROMAG.COM

According to Castillo and to Arcila, what makes the installation even more special is that recycled materials make up 80 percent of the project. “I’ll use things that I find on the ground, even,” said Castillo, who didn’t let the fact that he has no formal art education hold him back. Castillo started his artistic career by observing the former window decorator in 2009. He then created a Day of the Dead

INTERIOR DESIGN

Storied Objects BY ESTELLE PYPER @ESTIEPYPER @ESTIE_PYPER

I

f Raquel Almazan wants her apartment to resemble anything, it’s definitely not a West Elm store – like her sister’s home. “But I’m not knocking West Elm,” the artist is quick to add. But she’s right – her place is the opposite of what you’d find in a chic furniture catalog: it neither conforms to the trendy minimalist style, nor is it dotted with nondescript wall décor. “For me, I put everything together that I value,” Almazan said. “I can tell you, all of these things are from something that has happened in my life.”

46

DECEMBER 2018

From the Spanish pottery to the feathers gifted to her by Native Americans, everything has a story. Almazan and her family came to the United States from Spain when she was very young, and settled in Houston. At 14, she and her mother escaped a bad domestic situation and moved to Miami, where Almazan flourished as a Latina theater artist. “I loved Miami because Latinos were really at the center of everything,” Almazan said. “I didn’t feel like I was the other.” And about 12 years ago, she moved to New York City to pursue theater. At the

s

time, Astoria was flooded with actors. “Immediately I was drawn to Astoria,” Almazan remembered. “I felt like I was at home.” Now, she is on a journey to create a play cycle of 33 works – one for every Latin American country. “It’s the largest play cycle ever attempted by a North American playwright,” she noted. Her goal is for Latinx people to garner more representation on stage and in film. As a creative and spiritual person, Almazan surrounds herself with tokens that represent her theater work and honor her Spanish heritage. “I really wanted it to look like and feel like my life – like what I have lived, what I value,” Almazan explained. Her two-bedroom home has an immediate calming presence. She keeps the lights dimmed, and the energy of the objects in the living room is palpable. Almazan’s “alter” sits in a far corner of the living room. It’s a slanted ladder shelf covered in mementos from family and friends. On it sit sugar skulls, a crocheted cross necklace, photographs of her grandparents’ graves, Cuban maracas, a tiny boat used in one of her productions, dried flowers, a colDECEMBER 2018 I BOROMAG.COM

The opposite wall holds perhaps the most modern thing she owns: her TV, which is guarded by 11 African and Indonesian masks. “I’ve worked in African theater, so I was really taken by masks and all the different

48

meanings they brought to theater,” Almazan said. “They’ve really helped me and guided me when I’m writing.” The long shelf the TV sits on is filled with books and scattered with tribal statues and a Frida Kahlo self-portrait. A collection of African statues, many of them symbolizing fertility, rest on the bookcase next to the TV.

DECEMBER 2018

Hanging next to them is a thin piece of wood with a drawing of a skull on it that reads, “No More Colonies.” It’s for her play cycle, made by a close artist friend, Benjamin Rojas. Much of her décor has come one way or another from working in theater – either props from a show she’s worked on, or gifts from her collaborators. A beautiful pink pat-

terned blanket that’s draped over her grey couch was given to her by a woman from Ecuador when Almazan cast her in a show in Aspen. Perhaps the most striking item is a wooden gun that hangs on the wall above the stairs on the way up to her apartment (the building is split into two apartments – Almazan has the upstairs).

INTERIOR DESIGN

“I hope it doesn’t scare people when they come in!” Almazan joked. “This was also made for one of my plays. I didn’t want to put a gun onstage; I feel like that’s contributing to violence.” Instead of a real one, they created this wooden one. The kitchen isn’t as chock-full of decorations as the living room, but it still has character. Most of the items in the kitchen hark back to her childhood and Span-

ish heritage. Plates from Spain decorate the walls, and she has a small collection of pottery from her father’s tiny Spanish hometown. “I’m the only one [in my family] that puts these plates up from Spain,” Almazan said. “That’s gold to me. That’s where I come from.” Family is very important to her. She has gifts from her sister on display, and a

Almazan is comfortable and content in Astoria, even if it’s not the be-all-end-all for her. “Astoria kind of protected me,” she said. “When I first moved here it was the most diverse place in the world. But I still don’t know if New York is my home.” But wherever she goes next, she’ll collect more objects and memories to fill her new home.

wooden and silver cross hangs above her alter for her mother: “My mother does not like my masks,” Almazan said. “She really doesn't like them, so she made me promise that I would always hang a cross.” Even the large crystal lamp by the couch is a fond memory – she stole it with her mom from an antique shop whose owner owed them money. With so much history surrounding her,
