30th Ave Restaurant Week Saturday 10/12 – Sunday 10/21
Story Matthew Taylor
F
rom Saturday, October 12 through Sunday, October 21, the 30th Avenue Business Association is presenting 30th Avenue Restaurant Week.
According to Frank Arcabascio, President of The 30th Avenue Business Association, Astoria’s 30th Ave. is “exciting news [and] what’s coming next” in the New York dining scene. While Arcabascio says it was initially a casual alternative to “Williamsburg swag” and expensive offerings in Manhattan, 30th Ave. “has now become a first choice; you know you will have a good meal here.”
From 21st St to 49th St, participating establishments ranging from high-end restaurants to bars offering food, along with the area’s numerous sidewalk cafes, will offer deals and discounts to customers. It’s an ideal time for Astorians – and indeed, all New Yorkers – to try the diverse foods featured throughout the neighborhood. As John Valentin, a member of The 30th Avenue Business Association who is helping organize the event, says, “there are a lot of new restaurants opening up, and there is something for everybody on 30th Ave.”
6 | BOROMAG.COM | OCTOBER 2012
While many restaurants will be offering complimentary items with a meal – Grand Café, for example, will offer a free glass of wine with each entrée, and an order at Healthy Kitchen will come with a free dessert – others will be promoting new menu items at a discounted price, presenting diners with the unique opportunity to be the first to try new dishes and provide feedback.
Gus Lambropoulos, Vice President of The 30th Avenue Business Association, adds, “People from all over the world should experience Astoria at least once!” And what better time than during Restaurant Week! Over 25 restaurants have confirmed their participation in the event, which is sponsored in large part by local bank Astoria Federal, and Arcabascio projects more will be involved by the time the festivities kick off.
Ovelia is offering a free appetizer with any dinner entrée.
William Hallet is offering two Prix-Fixe Options.
Antika is offering a special White Clam Pizza.
Get a free glass of wine with dinner at Grand Cafe.

The Autumn
Table Story + Photos Bradley Hawks
Basil Brick Oven
With the change of seasons comes the availability of new produce ripe for harvest. Using local ingredients in-season not only guarantees freshness but also supports local farmers and reduces the waste caused by shipping ingredients from thousands of miles away. Read on for a preview of four neighborhood restaurants serving up some incredible autumn dishes:
Vesta Trattoria & Wine Bar
The most exciting autumnal pizza here is the Pizzucca, where pumpkin is slow roasted with walnuts and herbs, pureed with a touch of cream, spread onto the crust and then topped with homemade mozzarella, crispy pancetta, parmigiano reggiano, extra virgin olive oil and freshly clipped basil sprigs.
Chef Michelle Vido is a master of creating colorful, fresh dishes that showcase a rotating selection of market gems, like a vibrant heirloom tomato and cucumber panzanella and a simple-yet-flavorful orrechiette pasta with homemade sausage and kale pesto.

With a new menu comprised almost entirely of fresh seasonal vegetables, must-trys include blue cheese and celery root mini knishes, crispy coated tender braised cabbage croquettes in a cilantro-pepper sauce, horseradish-cheddar baked ravioli in a tomato zucchini ragout and a hearty wild mushroom Shepherd’s Pie with red wine-braised root vegetables. 40-17 Broadway, LIC | 718-777-0913 www.thequeenskickshaw.com 12 | BOROMAG.COM | OCTOBER 2012
21-02 30th Ave, Astoria | 718-545-5550 www.vestavino.com
A new seasonal menu created with Julie Powell, author of Julie & Julia, consists of small plates rooted in the seasonal market. A Guinness-braised brisket Shepherd’s Pie is studded with fall vegetables; glistening beets are polka dotted with wheat berries and yogurt; pickles from Brooklyn are panko-crusted, deep fried and served with chipotle aioli; and an eggplant tart is topped off with rosemary whipped cream. 4710 Vernon Blvd, LIC | 718-937-2044 www.lounge47.com

The Burger Story + Photos Bradley Hawks
veryone has their favorite place E to grab a burger, along with their favorite combination of toppings to
doctor it up just right. But how easily can you spot your champ in a line-up? Here are photos of 14 popular burgers in Western Queens, in no particular order. Can you correctly match the image and description with the burger’s name and location? 1 Fans hold a real sweet spot for this sweets shop’s namesake burger, served on a challah roll with creamy coleslaw, Swiss cheese, pickles, lettuce, tomato, garlic-pepper house aioli and (optional) applewood-smoked bacon.
14 | BOROMAG.COM | OCTOBER 2012
2 The toppings on this gorgeously stacked burger rotate frequently (ask about the tempura carrot ribbons) as Chef Natasha Pogrebinsky posts a new menu based on the local market each day by 6PM. 3 This decadent four cheese sirloin burger is served on brioche and topped with stilton, parmesan, taleggio, gruyere, a green stack of arugula and a drizzle of truffle oil. 4 Who said burgers are just for lunch? This one comes crowned with hickory-smoked bacon, cheddar cheese, a fried egg and homemade aioli.
5 This premium patty is so delicious by itself that it hardly warrants any toppings. It’s simply a house-butchered blend of smoked bacon and brisket. 6 A popular transplant from the Village, this Long Island City bad boy can be ordered with American cheese and a generous blanketing of homemade chili on a sesame seed bun. 7 An offshoot of the famous longtime Woodside butcher just a few doors up the street, this burger stand proves just how great it is to know where your food is sourced from.

10 Named after Astoria’s first landowner, this 30th Avenue hot spot serves its delicious tomato-aioli slathered burger until the wee hours of the morning so that restaurant industry employees can enjoy a quality bite after work.
12 One of the most unique burgers in Queens, this version is made from ground duck meat stuffed with molten gouda – available around the clock from Astoria’s favorite 1920’s coffee-shopturned-24-hour-gourmet-diner.
14 There’s always a line outside this popular burger spot, where this supreme version with Colby Jack, blackened maple bacon, battered onion rings and chopped french fries can also be served on lamb, wild boar, elk, bison or ostrich. at Burger Garage 14 Bareburger Supreme at Bareburger
9 This Irish-American gastropub is most famous for its fried pickles, but regulars keep coming back for the stellar burgers topped with spicy McClure’s pickles and Irish Cheddar.
11 This quirky comfort kitchen grills up an eclectic array of burgers topped with everything from ghost peppers to hash browns, along with this nostalgic mash-up of a patty with peanut butter, jelly and bacon.
Burger at Sanford’s 13 Gluten Free Double Cheeseburger
8 Often called “the In-N-Out of the East Coast,” this super affordable burger is a classic all-American crowd pleaser with locations in Astoria and Long Island City.

Food
red plate/Blue plate Story MeaGhan traInor
The 2012 election is upon us, and the country is divided. With access to a mountain of data on consumer habits, both campaigns are targeting every conceivable constituency, be it NASCAR dads or the coveted can’t-we-watch-TLCfor-once moms. But here’s something you may not have considered: a spate of pop science articles have recently detailed how food and drink preferences may actually differ along party lines.
According to a study done earlier this year by the Republican firm National Media (and first reported by The New York Times), hungry conservatives flock to chains like Chick-fil-A and Cracker Barrel, while liberals prefer to clog their arteries at White Castle and Popeye’s. Cognac is the most Democratic-skewed alcoholic beverage, while Republicans have a preference for light beers, whiskey and rye. The most intriguing study of the genre remains Urbanspoon’s Steak/Sushi Index, which suggests a trend
between the ratio of steakhouses (indicating a Republican edge) to sushi joints (indicating a Democratic advantage) in a given city and its voting behavior. Western Queen’s current Steak/Sushi Index, found using the highly scientific method of alternatively searching steakhouses (6) and sushi bars (15) for the neighborhoods of Astoria, Long Island City and Sunnyside, is 0.4. This predicts a considerable Obama edge, which seems to line up with expectations. But whatever your political persuasion, these Zagat-rated Astoria establishments are bringing people together to enjoy something we can all appreciate: exceptionally good food and booze! The reporting on how our political preferences correlate with our buying behavior might put the focus on how we vote with our dollars, but on November 6, don’t forget to vote with your ballot! To find your local polling place, call 1.866.VOTE.NYC or visit http://www.vote.nyc.ny.us/html/ voters/where.shtml.
