Jazz up a Gift Card

Beer growlers from The Queens Kickshaw

8 | BOROMAG.COM | DECEMBER 2012

Everybody loves a gift card, but why not add a little something extra? Instead of just sticking a gift card in an envelope, attach it to one of the many products sold at your favorite local restaurants: beer growlers from The Queens Kickshaw and MexiBBQ, house-made spice rub and BBQ sauces from Butcher Bar and even cow-shaped dairy creamers from SugarFreak, just to suggest a few!

EXPLORE YOUR BORO

AFTER SANDY Story MATTHEW TAYLOR

w

e don’t typically write about past events, but Hurricane Sandy so enormously impacted our borough – and New York City as a whole – that it deserves extra attention.

First and foremost, our hearts go out to those affected by the storm; Sandy was especially devastating in vulnerable areas such as the Rockaways and Staten Island. But the aftermath also illustrated something much more positive and affirming: the ability of the New York community to come together to support and provide for one another in times of greatest need. Many local businesses – including LIC Market, The Yoga Room and Skinny’s Cantina – held donation drives to collect important items for residents without electricity and shelter. The Queens Kickshaw donated 100% of the proceeds they made one Thursday to the Red Cross for relief efforts. A group of locals involved with Occupy Sandy started a group called Astoria Recovers, which helped our neighborhood and organized rideshares out to the Rockaways to assist New Yorkers whom FEMA and the Red Cross had been unable to reach. Th is community response and outreach was beyond anyone’s expectations, and there is no doubt that compassionate people who gave their time and energy saved lives and made an unforgettable difference to those most hurt by the storm. There are still more ways to help the victims of Sandy. Have a warm heart this holiday season and consider the following: 1. Add Occupy Sandy Relief on Facebook. Th is group serves as a hub that stays up-to-date on where volunteers and donations are most needed. They organize volunteer efforts as well as rideshares daily. 2. Visit astoria.recovers.org. Th is group began as a way to offer relief to our neighborhood and now is focused particularly on the Rockaways. They are often in need of office volunteers at their Astoria location for online research, data entry, communications monitoring, answering phone calls and web programming.

Donations go far: just $25 can provide clean water for an individual for 20 years. “EPIC’s mission is simple: to provide clean, sustainable water solutions to those in the developing world,” says co-founder Alexi Panos. “[Co-founder] Tennille and I have both realized through years of work in Africa that water really is the starting point to helping areas develop.” HOW TO DONATE: Donate online on behalf of, or in memory of, someone and EPIC will send them an acknowledgment letter, along with a dog tag (for donations of $25) and a t-shirt (for donations of $50).

CITY HARVEST For most of us, this time of year is unimaginable without our favorite seasonal dishes – but not everyone has the resources for a holiday feast. City Harvest rescues food and redistributes it to those in need in low-income neighborhoods. “Many New Yorkers are struggling to put meals on the table for themselves and their families, and we are steadfast in our daily commitment to help feed hungry men, women and children,” says Jennifer McLean, City Harvest’s Vice President of Community Impact.

Blissful Bedrooms provides bedroom makeovers for young people with limited resources and physical disabilities who are wheelchair-bound. The team creates a unique sanctuary with custom furniture, original artwork and adapted technology to make it easier for recipients to connect with others. “One hundred percent of any donation received will be applied to our very next bedroom makeover project,” says Martha Gold-Dvoryadkin, Co-Founder and President. “Th is holiday season, please consider giving the gift of a dream bedroom to a young individual who is severely disabled and will enjoy that present for years to come.”

HOW TO DONATE: Donate online, by mail or by phone, with the option of making an honorary or memorial gift that your recipient will be notified of.

HOW TO DONATE: Donate online or in donation boxes in select Astoria shops, including the four Brooklyn Bagel locations.

t’s no secret: New Yorkers are obsessed with their pets. Whether it’s the tabby with a roomful of toys or the terrier wearing a cuter outfit than you, it’s clear that human counterparts want only the best for their fourlegged companions. These local shops offer treats, supplies and playthings that pets and owners alike won’t be able to keep their paws off this holiday season.

The Jumping Bulldog

Treats and Tips

This doggy boutique offers holiday gift baskets on request, which you can personalize just for your pooch. Selections include certified organic toys and treats, handmade sweaters, even pet portraits by a local artist (to immortalize your canine companion). “Pets really are an integral part of the American family,” says owner Tania Firrigno. “People want to spoil them!”

“We’re animal lovers. We know a lot about them,” says Thiago Lobato of himself and co-owner Alex Mite. Their passion translates into carefully selected, high-quality food, treats and supplies. “People say, ‘Oh, my dog hates grooming…but not here,’” adds Thiago, crediting their experienced personnel and quality-over-quantity approach.
