FOOD

3 Irish menus that

(sham)ROCK! In honor of St. Patrick, the Irish saint for whom March 17th was declared a feast day, consider these three kitchens, all of which serve up Irish culinary renditions every day of the year. Story + Photos Bradley Hawks

Bangers and mash are served with the casing snipped like the end of a cigar, allowing the fat sausages to expand with crispy seared ends, and are plated with a trio of meticulously piped towers of mashed potatoes.

Cronin & Phelan’s It’s 5 o’clock on a Friday afternoon, and the entire length of the bar is packed with patrons sipping from frothy pilsner glasses. The skylight-kissed booths and tables across the room are beginning to fill as well; most order without a menu. That’s no surprise – the space has been serving Astoria clientele since 1902, though the Irish pub and restaurant wasn’t named Cronin & Phelan’s until 1960 (after its former owners). A speakeasy during Prohibition (with a brothel upstairs), guests can still enjoy Irish whiskeys rarely found elsewhere, like Powers and Paddy, all served amidst the same décor maintained since 1924. Though the eclectic kitchen cranks 6 | BOROMAG.COM | MARCH 2012

out everything from sliders to chicken marsala, crab cakes to pork chops, the heart of its offerings are classic Irish dishes – boasting exponentially more than any nearby Irish pub. A soft-spoken but spirited, silver-haired, unmistakably Irish gentleman, owner and executive chef Mike Peacock butchers all of the meat daily, and also preps the entrees. Recipes inspired by his mother, including a standout eggstudded potato salad and creamy whipped turnips, draw regulars from both Astoria and beyond. The Guinness pie is also mind-blowingly delicious. Meals commence with baskets of Irish soda bread, and sweet endings include homemade rhubarb pie with a dollop of vanilla ice cream. Cronin & Phelan’s; 38-14 Broadway, Astoria. Irish Breakfast Roll (country white bread roll with Irish bacon, Irish sausage, black pudding, & organic fried egg)

Sweet Afton

Rye Shandy (cocktail with rye whiskey, ginger beer, & Smuttynose IPA)

Sweet Afton is an Irish-styled American gastropub tucked just off a primarily Greek stretch of 30th Avenue, named after a famous poem (that later became a song) about a river in Scotland. It’s also an English cigarette brand formerly owned by an Irish company (the location once housed a New York tobacconist). Got all that? Fortunately, the pub’s craft beer selection is just as eclectic as its history, and Sweet Afton’s appeal is seemingly universal, drawing a steady stream of regulars from Astoria and beyond. It’s not hard to see why: Burger connoisseurs regard Sweet Afton’s version as one of the city’s best, and the mere mention of the bar is synonymous with fanatical ranting about fried pickles. Though the minimalist menu focuses on locally-sourced products, a few Irish classics stand out, particularly on the weekend brunch menu. Traditional Irish breakfast is transformed into a deliciously monstrous brunch sub, stacking bangers (Irish sausages), rasher (Irish bacon), black pudding (blood sausage) and an organic fried egg, all on a country-white hoagie with a side of Irish beans. Even American comfort plates like grilled cheese on Pullman loaf or cast iron skillets bubbling with macaroni and cheese are available with Dublin cheddar and Irish bacon. A version of the UK-popular shandy is served with whiskey, ginger beer, and India Pale Ale over rocks. Best of all, with no reservations, no formal waiting list and no televisions, Sweet Afton is the perfect place to congregate with old friends, or share a pint with new ones. Sweet Afton; 30-09 34th St., Astoria, (718) 777-2570; www.sweetaftonbar.com MARCH 2012 | BOROMAG.COM | 7

FOOD

That’s not Guacamole! The battered cod is traditionally served with tartar sauce and “mushy peas”.

Molly Blooms

The traditional Irish breakfast at Molly Blooms in all its glory.

This year, March 17th marks not only St. Patrick’s Day, but also the first anniversary of one of Sunnyside’s newest Irish bars. Meet Molly Blooms, where the Victorian-styled main room gives way to a chandelier-strewn, lamp-heated tent sheltering a year-round outdoor space. The menu features just a handful of breakfast and dinner items, but the Irish breakfast, is served all day, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Presented in its traditional form, the platter is loaded with two sunnyside up eggs, a lean seared rasher (Irish bacon is more like a savory, griddled slice of ham), black and white pudding (white pudding is essentially black pudding without the blood), bangers, a juicy grilled tomato, Irish beans and buttered toast. And if you’re in the mood for another staple, try the battered cod. It’s prepared to a wondrously classic effect, the chubby fish planks sitting atop a mound of chips and then garnished with ramekins of homemade tartar sauce and mushy peas, much like a thicker, saltier, and heartier version than the old Gerber standby. Everything can be washed down with a wide selection of craft beers and a Sunday night set list of live, traditional Irish music played by renowned Irish musicians. Monday evening is trivia night, where a battle of the brains can win free shots and gift certificates. Molly Blooms; 43-12 Queens Blvd, Sunnyside (718) 433-1916; www.mollybloomsnewyork.com

or the home cook who craves Irish cuisine, Butcher Block in Sunnyside is a neighborhood cornerstone, selling imported teas, biscuits and cookies and featuring a butcher counter complete with blood sausages, rashers and boiling bacon. At lunch hour, customers line up the length of the store to buy fresh-made renditions of Irish sausage rolls, beef stew and corned beef with cabbage. With St. Patty’s day right around the corner, Noel Gaynor, Butcher Block’s co-owner, shares his recipe for a traditional Irish dinner (the salt and flavor from the bacon makes this one of his absolute favorites). “Most people might look at this recipe and think, ‘who would eat that?’” he said. “But in Ireland, we might eat this supper four or five times a week.”

you can’t win the lottery if you don’t buy a ticket. The best odds for winning a first-place New York jackpot prize is with the Sweet Million: a 1 in 3,838,380 chance of taking home that $1 million cash prize. OK, OK, the chances are pretty bad. Your odds improve with scratch-offs, though: Instant Take 5 has an overall 1 in 4.64 of taking home at least something. And with more than 160 retailers in Astoria and LIC selling tickets, why not join in on the fun? Visit nylottery.ny.gov to find the nearest seller and pick a handful of numbers for a jackpot game or play a scratch-off ticket while you wait for your egg-and-cheese sandwich on Sunday morning. Make the lotto the night’s activity. If a few beers make you feel lucky, McCann’s and Astoria Bowl, among other local places, feature QuickDraw, a daily bingolike game. Every four minutes the Lottery’s computer randomly selects and displays 20 numbers on a monitor. You can sit at the bar with drinks and friends, relax and watch your lucky numbers light up. The ten-spot game has a 1 in 9 overall chance of winning anywhere from $5 to $100,000. Or, if you’re more interested in actual bingo, check out BORO’s online event calendar for bingo nights at Blackbird’s. don’t ignore all spam! Some of those pesky e-mails that end up in the trash bin are the easiest (and cheapest) places to try your luck. If the message is from a reputable company – maybe your favorite local shop or magazine (hint: follow BORO on Facebook!) – why not enter? The entries are usually free and take only a few minutes to fill out. You have nothing to lose! We’re not telling you to spend your savings – or even your grocery dollars – on a little game of chance, but it is OK to have fun once in awhile. And who knows? Maybe this St. Patty’s Day, you’ll be the lucky one to find that pot of gold.

noguchi Story Matthew Taylor

N

ew York City is a pendulum of change: businesses open, storefronts vanish, desolate neighborhoods gentrify. But change can’t just happen for change’s sake; it is crucial, as architect/urban designer Claire Weisz says, to “reconsider the mindset that any empty piece of land can be just changed any way.” Taking this message to heart, four artist-led teams – consisting of architects, writers and planners in Western Queens – are collaborating on innovative ways to be more intentional about development, striving to put the neighborhood at the forefront of what could be the next monumental phase of New York City. For example, the Noguchi Museum and Socrates Sculpture Park has put together an initiative entitled Civic Action: A Vision for Long Island City, “in response to new development, rezoning and an increasing residential population,” according to Jenny Dixon, Noguchi’s Director. The initiative is on display at the museum through April 22, and proposals will begin to be implemented at the park in May. History and culture are driving forces behind Civic Action. The waterfront land that Isamu Noguchi and Mark di Suvero transformed into landmarks in the mid-1980s had previously been bleak and unappealing. Weisz, who is also the urban strategist for this project, said that her teams analyzed what Noguchi and di Suvero had created and asked, “What can we do to build on this?”

22 | BOROMAG.COM | MARCH 2012

Photographs above and right showcase the current exhibit at the noguchi museum entitled Civic Action: A Vision for Long Island City. Exhibit will be on display through April 22, 2012.

Their range of ideas focuses on bringing art into the public sphere, asking city dwellers to reflect on ecology and repurposing familiar aspects of the neighborhood. Dixon expressed hope that this neighborhood “can be a Petri dish for the rest of the city.” Artist and team leader Mary Miss sees the zone as a potential “Living Laboratory” space. Collaborative ideas could be tested here without all of the typical hoops involved in urban planning, and successful projects could later expand to the city as a whole. One of Miss’ proposals includes installing widely visible gauges of water/energy consumption and pollution/waste production on the well-known red-andwhite striped stacks of TransCanada’s “Big Allis” generator. Proposals from other teams include a community kitchen in Socrates Sculpture Park, a united shoreline walk to ensure the waterfront stays open to the public and even aerial

zip lines extending from the subway to hard-to-reach areas. These diverse teams allow for what Miss calls a “layering [of ] experiences and information.” Projects such as the hopeful transformation of Broadway in Spring 2013 into a GreenWay, a drivable grass road that can also host neighborhood events such as movie nights, markets and exhibitions, are informed by a variety of disciplines and backgrounds. Weisz sums up the goal nicely: “[We want to] put communities in the position of being connoisseurs and also entrepreneurs – benefactors of great design.” Are you an expert or passionate amateur who wants to get involved? Go to www.civicactionprojects.org or www.noguchi.org for more on upcoming events and how to join this exciting project. MARCH 2012 | BOROMAG.COM | 23

is an oft-overlooked neighborhood of Western Queens that makes for some great exploration. From history to art to theater, it’s worth a detour to see what great finds lie just a few minutes away. Here are some of our favorite picks:

Nier’s Tavern & Café 87-48 78th st. woodhaven, (718) 296-0600 www.nierstavern.com

Opened in 1829, Nier’s is the oldest operating bar in Queens, situated just east of the Brooklyn border on 78th Street in Woodhaven. The infamous Christmas scene from Goodfellas was filmed here, along with the 2011 comedy Tower Heist. Inside, it’s the quintessential New York neighborhood bar: tinned ceilings, a scrappy wooden bar and an eclectic mix of kitschy decorations and lights that set the mood for a great watering hole. It’s the perfect place to hang out for a beer and a quick meal, complete with a palatable dose of history and nostalgia. 26 | BOROMAG.COM | MARCH 2012

The premiere Japanese art gallery in the city sits in a 1,000 square foot building near the base of the Queensborough Bridge in west Sunnyside. Currently on display: works from tea bowl sculptor Goro Suzuki and painter/screen maker Yoshiyaki Yuki, whose seven sculptural screens symbolize the connection between earth and sky. In April, the gallery will hold a fair at The Armory in Manhattan to showcase both emerging Japanese artists and local New York artists, including famous Midwestern ceramicist Warren McKenzie, whose rare pottery is prized around the world.

Thalia latin Theatre 41-17 Greenpoint Ave. sunnyside, (718) 729-3880 www.thaliatheatre.org

Sunnyside, and Queens for that matter, is home to a diverse Latin American community. Thalia has been catering to that community’s need for quality culturally authentic theater and dance since 1977. Taking pride in introducing Queens residents to new Spanish and Latin American composers and playwrights, many of its plays are spoken in a mix of English and Spanish to showcase the neighborhood’s diversity. Weekly performances of the current show, TANGO 5 Senses, which is a celebration of the five senses through traditional Latin dance, can be seen through March 18. A corresponding dance workshop taught by the cast is also available through March 10 for those who want to jump out of the audience and experience the dance firsthand.

Mombar

lITTle eGyPT Though the strip of Steinway between 30th Avenue and Astoria Boulevard is named after one country, it really encompasses all the cuisines of the Middle East. If you’re lacking the budget for a trip halfway across the world, this is the next best place to experience it all. Here’s where to go:

la shish 28-28 steinway st. Astoria, (718) 278-282

A veritable oasis sits at this inviting deli/grocery store, stocked with all the greatest hits of Lebanon. A deli case full of skewered meats greet you as you walk in and lead you to another filled with falafel balls, mini-spinach pies called fatayer and lahmajeen, an addictive flatbread smeared with spiced, ground lamb. Step into the back area and pick up wild Lebanese cucumber pickles, puck, a jarred, sweet cream cheese spread for bagels from Denmark and even cans of hummus for those last-minute hunger pangs.

Mombar 25-22 steinway st. Astoria.

At this Egyptian temple of claypot cooking, chef Moustafa el Sayed creates his signature twists on classical southern Egyptian fare, such as be-sara, a sort of fava bean hummus flavored with coriander, and fragrant tajeens that mix earthy, gamey meats like rabbit and lamb with sweetsour sauces filled with dried fruits and olives. However, to experience el Sayed’s true talent, order off the menu and ask for that day’s special. For a recent meal, an offal tasting was on the table consisting of brains, sweetbreads (thymus), cheeks, kidneys and penis, all served and seasoned in different ways. It’s a taste of Cairo in Astoria just as it would be in Egypt.

Corner of steinway and 25th Avenue little Morocco, 24-39 steinway st. Astoria. Al-sham sweets & Pastries, 24-39 steinway st. Astoria. (718) 777-0876

Little Morocco, a halal Mediterranean deli, serves up perfectly pleasing grilled meat and tagine platters with rice and vegetables, but it’s their merguez sandwich, a fresh lamb and beef sausage flavored with harissa and garlic and piled on a white roll, that is reason alone to visit this outpost. Step out and walk two feet to the right into the Syrian bakery Al-Sham Sweets & Pastries to pick up dessert: buttery smooth walnut baklava, tender date-filled shortbread cookies called mamool and kanafeh, the famous Middle-Eastern dessert pie of fresh cheese and shredded wheat soaked in honey syrup and served piping hot by the slice. 28 | BOROMAG.COM | MARCH 2012

East Ocean Palace

ForesT HIlls dIM sUM east ocean Palace 113-09 Queens Blvd. Forest Hills, (718) 268-1668

East Ocean Palace in Forest Hills offers fantastically authentic Cantonese dim sum on the weekends, perfect for when Flushing and Chinatown seem too far away. Like a frenzied bumper car buffet, cart attendants wheel through the dining room as if selling on commission, proudly displaying what feels like hundreds of dishes, from steamed dumpling baskets with every filling imaginable to classic small plates like chicken feet and tripe to gorgeous desserts like water chestnut New Year’s cake and chewy sesame balls stuffed with warm almond paste. You can even choose fresh seafood from the aquariums in the entryway. Whole live prawns are scooped to order and flash-fried, served in a generous heap. Plates range from $2-$5 and feed three to four people each, allowing a party of four to six to fill up for around $20 per person (or less). Large plates may also be ordered from the menu. Seating is called by handwritten numbers, with wait times rarely exceeding twenty minutes. Specify a tea order right away, or receive the basic chrysanthemum tea traditionally served at the kids’ table. Etiquette tip: “thank you” is gestured (rather than spoken) by tapping a single finger on the table, two fingers if married (which signifies bowing).

Ask any group of regulars what makes Irish Rover so great, and you’ll get a slew of different answers, but a constant dose of praise. Patrons are as loyal to this pub as to the Emerald Isle itself. Boasting cheap drinks, quality TVs with sports and the unofficial buyback special (“unofficial” meaning those with a bad attitude shouldn’t expect free drinks), it’s not hard to see why.

Anybody who has perused lists of the best burgers in NYC has heard of Donovan’s. It’s a ride away on the 7 train, but if food critics can get out there to rave about it, so can you.

37-18 28th Ave, Astoria

The one drawback? “I wish they served food,” said a man playing a game of darts. So while you won’t be getting a shepherd’s pie here, rest assured you won’t go hungry: the pub has all the local restaurant menus you could ever need, and you’re encouraged to order delivery. 30 | BOROMAG.COM | MARCH 2012

57-24 roosevelt Ave, woodside

Despite the city-wide renown for its patties, Donovan’s maintains the authentic local vibe that comes from being around for over 45 years. Even a self-described lifelong Manhattanite admitted, “It’s places like Donovan’s that we’re losing in the city – establishments that are quality but not overcrowded and have a sort of legacy about them.”

“From the first time I walked in here, I felt welcome. Even people who looked like they were here every night were friendly,” said a young man in Sissy McGinty’s on a Saturday night. The bar’s reputation for inclusiveness comes from the variety of hats it wears: Irish bar, gay bar, karaoke bar and sports bar, to name a few. And it’s the surprising compatibility of these diverse identities that makes this place a guaranteed good time. Hop in and enjoy the pool table, nightly specials, HDTVs, karaoke machine, and yes, even a Wii. Visit www.BOROmag. com/nightlife for more recommendations.
