Summer in BBQueens

BBQ Basted & Braised in Queens

From slow cooking over hot coals and smoking over fragrant wood chips to savory sauces and the festivities that accompany, barbecue takes on different meaning to different folks. Hoping to hit a few styles you love, and maybe even one or two you’ve yet to try, here’s a roundup of the neighborhood’s most popular joints, along with one tip they recommend for BORO readers who BBQ at home.

Story + Photos BRADLEY HAWKS

MEXIBBQ Make it a whole experience

Super slow cooked brisket is served in a skillet with crunchy magenta pickled cabbage and jalapeno goat cheese corn bread.

“Barbecue is the anti-fast food,” explains MexiBBQ’s Executive Chef Jonathan Van Sleet. “Make it a full experience, and don’t rush it. All of those elements make the food taste better.” He must be onto something, because crowds spill from the packed bar and dining room well beyond the sidewalk café practically every hour MexiBBQ is open. Part of MexiBBQ’s appeal is the holistic experience it offers, from the exposed brick and hardwood dining room with oversized dangling light bulbs to the fact that each dish is suggestively paired with one of 48 artisanal draft beers. But there’s no denying that there’s simply some exceptional cooking going on, with Mexican-infused barbecue at the heart of the inspiration. Brisket is hickory smoked for three hours and tequila-braised for another six before being served in a skillet with crunchy magenta pickled cabbage and jalapeno goat cheese corn bread. Tuesdays feature all-you-can-eat ribs for $19; these dry rubbed bad boys are hickory smoked for three hours and then beer-braised for an additional three to four. You can literally lift the bones with your pinky, rendering knives pointless. And definitely try MexiBBQ’s pork meatballs, light and moist in a skillet blanketed with a tangy sweet and smokey sauce, jeweled with glistening cubes of maple pecan roasted yams. Barbecue this tasty is a true art form, and there’s some real magic going on here. MexiBBQ | 37-11 30th Ave, Astoria | 718-626-0333 mexibbq.com 6 | BOROMAG.COM | JULY 2012

Butcher Bar’s burnt ends.

BUTCHER BAR Go low & slow (with temp/cooking time) and don’t be shy with the rub Butcher Bar could be considered Astoria’s barbecuniversity, as it offers all the components needed for a successful home barbecue. Customers can savor local grass-fed, organic and natural meats in the dining room, or order from the butcher counter to go. Eight-ounce bottles of BBQ sauce in classic, sweet and spicy and habanero are available for just $5, and you can even purchase their special recipe dry rub for $10 a jar. Carvery selections range from double-smoked burnt ends to brisket and pork belly. Though do-it-yourselfers regard this smokehouse as a gourmet shop, dining in has its perks. After all, 30th Avenue might be lined with sidewalk cafes, but few restaurants can boast the spacious backyard patio that Butcher Bar offers, adding an extra element so essential to summertime dining. The menu is refreshingly straightforward with solid, awardwinning techniques from Chef Orlando Sanchez, recently named one of Zagat’s “30 under 30” promising young NYC chefs. Sticky and smokey burnt ends headline, followed by St. Louis-style ribs, roasted turkey with cranberry sauce, smoked pulled pork, and 14-hour slow-smoked brisket. Co-stars include old school renditions of jumbo three-cheese macaroni, string beans studded with house-cured bacon, mini corncakes with honey butter and sweet potato wedges. And if all of that homemade deliciousness still isn’t authentic enough, the Butcher Bar team will actually come to your house and barbecue pork or a whole lamb right in your own backyard. FOOD

The Smokehouse Club comes stacked with pork belly brisket, fresh lettuce and tomato and a slathering of mayo.

JOHN BROWN SMOKEHOUSE Do it with love The crew at John Brown Smokehouse in Long Island City is comprised of a football coach, a former Navy SEAL and a food blogger. But according to those who know best, that’s exactly what makes this restaurant work. “None of the team has ever been a ‘sous’ anything. We aren’t fancy. The secret is that we just really love what we do,” says owner Josh Bowen, a proud Kansas native known to occasionally pluck his banjo in the dining room. Though reviews rave of the brisket and burnt ends, Bowen recommends the Smokehouse Club, which is stacked with pork belly brisket, fresh lettuce and tomato and a slathering of mayo. A side accompanies each platter, and the molasses-rich pureed sweet potato steals the show. Pies are baked by various members of the staff, who wave in turn as the cashier introduces each slice and its creator, ranging from a gooey and buttery pecan pie to a creamy and zesty key lime pie. The dining room may be no-frills, but a meal here is well worth the trip. John Brown Smokehouse | 25-08 37th Ave, Long Island City | 718-361-0085 johnbrownsmokehouse.org

SIK GAEK Do it with a large group “Oh, that’s probably too much food,” the server warns in a refreshing moment of honesty. “Most dishes are intended to serve 3-4.” He then reaches under the table for an invisible switch, and flames magically appear from the center of the table. The restaurant is Sik Gaek, and the booths are tucked under tin awnings reminiscent of a bustling Asian back alley. This is Korean BBQ at its very best, and it’s a whole different ballgame. Soon the waiter returns, and begins frying a couple of eggs in a skillet to be set aside as one of many complimentary garnishes – a technicolor parade of small plates. The Korean rice cakes are a crowd favorite and actually resemble sriracha gnocchi. Mounds of clams, sea snails, prawns, scallops and mussels cover the table, all to be slowly grilled before you. Bold diners will want to try Sik Gaek’s famous plate, the seafood hot pot – a seafood rice bowl that slowly steams over the heat and includes a live octopus. On the radar… Rest-au-Rant recently announced BBQ Sundays, featuring $10 drafts with BBQ selections ranging from burgers and pulled pork sliders to ribs and cevapi sausages. Rest-au-Rant | 30-01 35th Ave, Long Island City 718-729-9009 | rarbarlic.com

HUNGRY for competition? Story + Photos BRADLEY HAWKS

re you looking for that pie in the sky? Hungry for a little competition this summer? Don’t wanna get whipped, but are willing to bite off more than you can chew? Do you find banana cream pies a-peeling?

The champion in each category will receive an engraved crystal trophy and $50 gift card to Astor Bake Shop, and all participants will walk away with an ABS t-shirt and participation medal.

To commemorate its second anniversary, Astor Bake Shop will be hosting its annual pie-eating contest on July 15. The celebration will get underway at 2:30 PM, with the competition kicking off at 3:00 PM. A panel of celebrity judges – including Zac Young of Food Network’s “Top Chef: Just Desserts” – will officiate as contestants frantically binge to be the first to completely consume a whole pie using only their mouths and faces.

For everyone else, mini blueberry pies and house beverages will be available for sampling, along with live music before and after the contest. Participants can sign up until noon the day of the event.

The hands-free hilarity will be divided into three categories: Women 18 & Older, Men 18 & Older and Juniors 12 -17.

BLANKET BUFFETS Story + Photos BRADLEY HAWKS

Between Socrates Sculpture Park, Astoria Park, Gantry Plaza and countless other outdoor locations, Western Queens is the ideal destination for a summer picnic. Fret not if you don’t have the spare time to whip up a homemade potato salad or stack assorted sandwiches; these three delicious shops offer quintessential New York fare perfect for a blanket smorgasbord.

PITA PAN What better way to celebrate Astoria, known for its gyros and Mediterranean cuisine, than grabbing some souvlaki to enjoy in one of many Greek-themed parks? At Pita Pan, souvlaki sticks are available in pork or chicken for 3 for $3.50, or you can make it a meal with four skewers, fries and a salad for just under ten bucks. Pita sandwiches feature classics from falafel to gyros, but the Mega Mix Grill (for two) is a $16.95 feast with all three gyro meats, souvlaki, loukaniko, salad, fries, warm pita points and tzatziki for dipping. Build your own wrap or panini, and add fries or onion rings with organic field greens for just $4.50 to make it a true feast. You can even create your own burger or personal pizza.

Just be sure to plan extra time if you want to shop here – the possibilities are endless, and you’ll likely change your mind several times before deciding which tidbits to take with you from this 22,000 sq. ft. gourmet dream. YOUR INNER

DIONYSUS Story MATTHEW TAYLOR

N

ow’s the time to see and be seen in New York, to enjoy late-night parties and bask in the sun. But let’s be honest – when summer arrives, the heat can be less glorious than it sounded back in January. And when it’s time to cool down, nothing hits the spot like a quality wine. WINEGASM BAR & EATERY Dean Tomic, co-owner and sommelier at Winegasm, intentionally showcases Astoria’s diversity in his wine selection: “I like to see people from all over the world. Their eyes shine when they see a familiar bottle.” Tomic calls rosé, which is served chilled and has qualities of both red and white, “the perfect wine for summer.” Winegasm serves three different rosés on a regular basis, including vintage Cava, a bubbly rosé from Spain.

Winegasm

Lambrusco, a “fresh and fizzy, slightly sweet red” from central Italy is served chilled and functions as a festive party wine. “You can drink gallons of it because it’s so good!” says Tomic, though we don’t suggest that you try. Winegasm’s summer cocktail list focuses on Mediterranean drinks, such as lemonade mixed with Greek ouzo and iced tea with Italian Amaro. These flavors are dear to Tomic, a Croatian, and it turns out they resonate with many Astorian residents as well! And if you’re simply in the mood for a cold brew to beat the heat, be sure to check out Winegasm’s list of craft beers – 16 in all. GOOD WINE RECOMMENDATIONS

ASTORIA WINE & SPIRITS If you’re on a budget, Jacob Berg of Astoria Wine & Spirits recommends three bottles as cheap as $12.99 and all under $20: Mosaic

Chateau Montaud Rosé This wine from Provence is light, fruity, and good with salads or Mediterranean food. Chateau de la Clapière Rosé Also from Provence, this rosé is fuller than the former, with more herbs and spices as well as strawberries on the palate. Les Marennes Sancerre This juicy wine with lots of flowers & citrus is ideal for a picnic. Astoria Wine & Spirits 34-12 Broadway, Astoria 718-545-9463 | www.astoriawines.com

ASTORIA PARK WINE & SPIRITS Mosaic

MOSAIC CAFÉ & LOUNGE The Cavicchiolo Lambrusco di Sorbara DOC at Mosaic is a sparkling wine with raspberry and strawberry notes that, according to owner Tom Romano, make it ideal for rosé lovers. “It is a great sipping wine for the summer, and it’s difficult to find it sold by the glass as it is here,” he says. Other featured wines, including the Riesling and Gruner Veltliner, have fruity flavors and aromas (apricot and pineapple, for example) that make them particularly refreshing during the summer months. Romano is equally proud of the seasonal beers and ciders on Mosaic’s menu, such as the 21st Amendment Watermelon Wheat, RJ Rocker Son Of A Peach and Wells Banana Bread Ale, all of which offer a welcome respite from the sun. Mosaic is also adding paninis to their menu, and on Monday nights, all bottles of wine are 25% off. Mosaic Café & Lounge | 25-19 24th Ave, Astoria 718-728-0708 | www.mosaicnyc.net

Amanda, owner of Astoria Park Wine & Spirits, chimes in with three of her summer wine picks: Tiasta Torrontes-$10 This Argentinian white is light, fresh, and fruity. Great for sipping outside on a warm day! Gin Barry Shiraz-$20 If you’re barbecuing and looking for a wine that is light enough for summer but can still hold up against even red meat, look no further than this fruity Australian wine. La Cana Albarino-$16 This Spanish white is fuller-bodied than the Torrontes. While it is more crisp and dry, it still manages to be refreshing with a clean finish. THE PERFECT HOME Story DANIEL CROWN

A

s anyone who has ever searched for a New York City apartment can attest, finding the perfect place to live often becomes an epic and grueling task. This is especially true for those who don’t want to sacrifice space and comfort just to be able to get outside and see something green every now and again. As it turns out, few neighborhoods are better suited to house these premier properties than Long Island City and Astoria. If you’re on the prowl for a new home this summer, look no further than the following two buildings, both of which perfectly utilize Western Queens’ unique environment by combining spacious outdoor areas with distinctive urban views:.

View from EXO

4540 Center Blvd

For nearly a decade, developers from TF Cornerstone have been changing the face of Long Island City’s waterfront. By filling the 22 acres that previously housed the city’s largest Pepsi-Cola bottling plant, the string of EastCoast residential properties on Center Boulevard has long transformed the borough’s shoreline into a verdant urban oasis.

Located at 26-38 21st Street, EXO Astoria prides itself on its spacious apartments and modern, new finishes. Each unit sports oak plank flooring, recessed lighting and, perhaps most importantly, the Holy Grail for most NYC apartment hunters: a pristine washer/dryer set.

True to form, the group’s newest building, located at 4540 Center Blvd., features a large, landscaped outdoor terrace, ideal for summer get-togethers. If that isn’t enough, the building is also surrounded by 12 acres of parks alongside the historic East River esplanade. Combine these outdoor havens with the property’s roomy, cutting edge living spaces, and you’ve got the quintessential New York apartment building. As Sofia Estevez, Executive Vice President in charge of leasing for TF Cornerstone, explains, the area “offers unmatched amenities, acres of green space and the conveniences of a true neighborhood – all within minutes of Manhattan.” 4540 Center Blvd. | 718-606-9440 | www.tfcornerstone.com 30 | BOROMAG.COM | JULY 2012

With all the time saved by not having to walk to the laundromat, EXO denizens can readily take advantage of the building’s two outdoor areas, both of which provide pleasant views of the Manhattan skyline. The first, a landscaped sky lounge, features a series of chaise lounges perfect for latenight reading sessions. The second, a sizable rooftop terrace, is ideal for outdoor barbecue enthusiasts. EXO also features a full fitness center replete with cardio machines, weights and mat area for those interested in keeping in shape. “With an abundance of amenities, new, spacious apartments and beautiful skyline views, it’s an amazing value for the area,” said Jim Hayden, EXO’s General Manager.
