YOUR PARTY CREW ASTORIA/LIC EVENT PLANNING GUIDE Story Suzanne Sitelman

Event planning can be a daunting task. The right setting, food, decorations, music – the list of must-haves goes on and on. Luckily, Astoria and LIC boast some of the area’s top venues and caterers to help turn your special day into a perfect memory.

VENUES

The perfect party starts with a perfect venue. “The venue sets the mood for how the entire event is going to flow,” says Naeema Arrastia, Event Coordinator at Aurora Gallery. “You want it to reflect your style and invoke the right response from all in attendance.”

AURORA GALLERY

Aurora Gallery

The Aurora Gallery is a choice venue for those looking for an affordable, eclectic space to host an intimate affair. The Manhattan style living room, complete with sofas and a big screen, is ideal for the creative-at-heart and nontraditional. With gallery white walls, 30-foot windows and wire-framed ceilings, this 2500-square feet facility can fit up to 132 guests (along with a dance floor). Every rental includes tables, chairs, lounge furniture, lighting options, movie projector and a dedicated staff member to help ensure your event runs smoothly – all for just $200 an hour. www.theauroragallery.com 4 | BOROMAG.COM | JUNE 2011

THE FOUNDRY

The Foundry

Once a 19th century steel metal foundry, this remodeled space is now a popular venue for weddings and private parties. Brick walls contrast dramatically with modern steel girders, offering an industrial chic vibe, while three large skylights let in plenty of natural light. In addition, a large, open courtyard offers picturesque views of the Manhattan skyline. “I think what makes The Foundry so special is that it is a completely unique space in the city,” says Julie Miller, The Foundry’s Event Manager. “It provides industrial charm coupled with all the lush greenery present in the courtyard.” The raw space can be fully customized to meet your event needs. The 2000-square foot facility accommodates up to 200 people and is equipped with a fully appointed kitchen, dressing room, audio/visual system and adjustable track lighting. www.thefoundry.info

The Renaissance of Astoria

Renaissance of Astoria exudes European charm with its alabaster lighting, dramatic marble staircases, mahogany bar and elegant balconies. French doors lead to a 7000-square foot dining duplex that can accommodate up to 300 guests. A full service event hall, Renaissance of Astoria specializes in personalized cocktails and catering menus. “We are a young and motivated international team with an eye for detail,” says Teresa Lisson, Renaissance’s General Manager. “We host one event at a time, with all details tailored to your unique interests, heritage and tastes.” Prices range from $55 to $100 per guest. Included in all packages are votive candles, 20 different shades of linens,

THE RENAISSANCE OF ASTORIA

valet parking, silver or golden charger plates, a champagne toast, European bread assortment, coffee and tea. www.renaissanceofastoria.com

CATERERS Sage Events

Offering sustainable catering since 1997, Sage Events uses only the freshest naturally grown ingredients to craft both traditional and contemporary fare. Featuring seasonal foods acquired from local farms, menus include hormone-free chicken, grass-fed beef and organic milk and eggs. “We’re committed to only working with local farms, family owned businesses and handcrafted purveyors,” says Leslie Ann Nilsson, Owner and Founder. “If we do not make something ourselves by hand, we only work with other merchants that do.” Featured in Martha Stewart Weddings, Sage Events has experience organizing parties for major corporations and film studios, as well as smaller gatherings. www.sageevents.com

CAKES

More than just a tasty treat, cake is a central component of many festive traditions and should properly reflect the style and theme of your event. As Anna-Marie Farrier, owner and chef of Little Oven in Long Island City, says, “Whether it be for a birthday, wedding or other celebration, cakes set the tone for your event and are a fun and delicious way to share your favorite tastes.” Astoria and LIC are full of local pastry shops that tailor cakes specifically for special occasions. Leading the pack are

ASTOR BAKE SHOP

Little Oven and Astor Bake Shop in Astoria, both of which combine fresh ingredients with culinary expertise to create custom treats. “A cake lasts only a few hours, but its impression can last a lifetime,” says Astor Bake Shop Chef George McKirdy. www.astor-bakeshop.com, and www.littleoven.com SAGE EVENTS

DJ Keith Brazil

One of the most important aspects of any event involves finding the right musical entertainment or DJ services. “A pre-loaded playlist can’t read your crowd,” says Miller. “I’ve seen events where there are five guests dancing, and all of a sudden the DJ changes pace, and the next thing you know you’ve got a hundred people on the dance floor.” For over ten years, local DJ Keith Brazil has been entertaining crowds with his eclectic musical mixes that combine soul, rock and new wave styles. As Keith describes, “I like to play tunes people know but aren’t expecting— basically keep the set twisting and people guessing.” Contact Keith Brazil, email kbrazil@translations.com.

FLOWERS/DECORATIONS Floresta

ALCHEMIQ BY FILIP WOLAK

DRINKS Alchemiq FLORESTA

Over five years experience in the floral industry led Carlo Bermudez to open Floresta, a recent addition to LIC. Carlo attributes the success of his shop to his uniquely beautiful floral arrangements and his ability to help clients discover a proper decorative style for their event. In addition, Carlo’s relationship with international wholesalers allows Floresta to use fresh flowers that may not even be in season. For Bermudez, flowers are a central part of any occasion, the building blocks that form the host’s distinctive decorative visions. As such, Bermudez refers to floral designers as the “architects of an event.” “My business is unique because I think out of the box,” he says. “Our success is the result of remembering a thousand little details — presentation, quality, design and innovative ideas.” www.florestanyc.com 6 | BOROMAG.COM | JUNE 2011

Alchemiq provides mixology services that surpass conventional bar tending. Igor Zukowiec, mixologist and founder of Alchemiq, works with clients to design custom tailored cocktail lists to suit any unique festivity. “We can create cocktails at parties that are difficult to serve in bars due to preparation time or perishable ingredients.” Alchemiq caters all types of social gatherings from small, luxury birthday parties to huge corporate events. www.alchemiq.com

RUSTICA

ZENON TAVERNA

AROUND THE WORLD IN FOUR MEALS

Story and Photos Bradley Hawks

The most memorable traveling experiences often involve sampling the cuisine of your foreign destination. But what if your summer budget doesn’t allow for that pricey getaway? Well, you don’t have to venture far to get a global culinary experience; Astoria and Long Island City are home to some of the most diverse restaurants in New York City, often at half the Manhattan price. Where else can you eat the entire culinary alphabet – from aloo gobi to zeppole – within just a few blocks (and without breaking the bank)?

RUSTICA

One of Long Island City’s most delicious treasures is Rustica, literally the daughter restaurant of nearby Manducati’s. “Mamma” Gianna Cerbone runs this cozy Italian cottage, inspired by the passion of her parents, who run Manducati’s. Fantastic aromas sail from the visible kitchen just beyond the pasta machine and Neapolitan brick pizza oven, while children press their noses against the pastry showcases. Be sure to try Rustica’s fresh pappardelle with shrimp and zucchini, along with the steaming pizza pocket bubbling with ricotta, mozzarella, ham, mushrooms, olives and artichoke hearts. And, as Mamma Cerbone is quick to remind you, don’t forget the gelato: “It’s what we’re famous for!” 8 | BOROMAG.COM | JUNE 2011

ZENON TAVERNA

While Astoria is known for some of the city’s most authentic Greek restaurants, Zenon Taverna takes it an island further, marrying the cuisines of Greece and Cyprus. Cypriot cuisine utilizes pork as opposed to lamb, along with accents of rosewater and mint and Middle Eastern spices like cumin and curry. Run by Stelios Papageorgiou with his wife and three daughters, Zenon serves Greek favorites like the saganaki (flaming cheese). But for the broadest sampling of their menu, bring a group for the Kypriaki Mezedes – a Technicolor banquet of sixteen hot and cold appetizers. From red caviar dip to pork loin and quail, $19.95 will baptize you into a delicious orientation of what Zenon’s kitchen has to offer.

JJ’S ASIAN FUSION

JJ’S ASIAN FUSION

From the other side of the globe, JJ’s Asian Fusion brings an exciting blend of creations from the Pacific Rim. Daily specials include live scallops, apple kimchi and a blackened tuna meatball in caper berry cream sauce. Pot stickers are stuffed with pureed edamame in wasabi cream with basil oil. Standard sushi and stir-fried noodles are available, but why stick with a tekka maki when the lobster tempura arrives in a champagne flute with yuzu-mango glaze and tobiko? Be sure to ask about off-menu specials, like the house tempura roll – salmon and cream cheese sushi battered and deep-fried.

BLEND (A,4)

BLEND

BLEND

For a south of the border fiesta, head to Blend – the LIC staple is stirring up a buzz with innovative twists on Latin favorites at extremely affordable prices. Just $10 gets you a sampling of all five homemade empanadas that look more like colorful mochi arranged on the plate, each with a different filling. Insanely delicious huevos rancheros (simply titled Avocado & Eggs for $7.95) arrive like an edible Jenga game, stacked with toasted bread, black bean quesadilla, eggs, cotija cheese and ranchero sauce. And don’t forget to sample the eclectic bar menu for concoctions like the Berry Blend Punch with Ciroc Red Berry and a mix of strawberries, blueberries and raspberries.

UMMER STAY-CATION

Story Jared Killeen

The 7 train routinely connects Queens’ diverse neighborhoods, but come June 16, it will also act as a gallery tour guide. Welcome to the Queens Art Express (QAX), a threeday event during which art enthusiasts are invited to ride the 7 from LIC to Flushing, stopping off at galleries and studios as varied as Ten10 Studios, PS1 and Secret Theatre. New this year is the addition of the N/Q/R line, which adds Astoria hotspots like Hell Gate Social, Socrates Sculpture Park and the Noguchi Museum to the itinerary. “Right now we have 33 festival venues [participating] during QAX weekend,” says Project Manager David Bromley. But adding Astoria to the mix isn’t this year’s only innovation. According to Bromley, QAX is also creating a mobile app that will give festival-goers “a virtual tour of the neighborhoods.” www.QueensArtExpress.com

20 | BOROMAG.COM | JUNE 2011

Just in time for strawberry season, the Grow NYC Green Market will open its booths to the general public on June 25. Located on the viridian meadow of the Socrates Sculpture Park in LIC, the market will operate every Saturday through November from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. As the good people at Grow NYC tell us, the Green Market helps to “promote regional agriculture, preserve farmland and ensure a continuing supply of fresh, local produce for all New Yorkers.” Be sure to consult the Grow NYC website to determine which fruits and vegetables are in season, but rest assured that whether you decide on Swiss char or summer squash, June will be a great month to buy green.

Queens is a veritable microcosm of world cuisine. Celebrating this fact is The Sixth Annual Taste of LIC, a one-night smorgasbord featuring a myriad of food from the borough’s best restaurants. Created and produced by The Chocolate Factory Theater, the Taste of LIC will be held on June 11 at the Gantry Plaza State Park in Long Island City. “It’s a way for us to celebrate the community of which we are a part,” said organizer Brian Rogers. And as the LIC community has grown, so has the Taste of LIC. “When we started the event six years ago, 20 restaurants participated,” said Rogers. “This year it will be [closer to] sixty.” Tickets are limited, so be sure to purchase yours soon! Cost: $50-$500 www.ChocolateFactoryTheater.org

TRAVEL

EXPLORE YOUR BORO

Downtown Flushing

Though the explorer in you might instinctively be drawn towards Manhattan when looking for summertime adventure, the Borough of Queens is actually home to some of the summer’s most unique destinations. Here are five can’t-miss suggestions just beyond Astoria and Long Island City (best of all, you won’t even have to cross the river!). Story and Photo Bradley Hawks

FLUSHING

A short ride on the 7 train lands you in the middle of what many call the real Chinatown of New York City. Downtown Flushing is the largest urban center in Queens, and the third most bustling intersection in New York City (just behind Times Square and Herald Square). Snack on 25cent dumplings and $1 hoisin duck buns while weaving through a kaleidoscope of Asian markets, dim sum palaces, apothecaries and underground food courts. The Queens Botanical Garden on Main Street dates back to the 1939 World’s Fair.

CITI FIELD

What could be more summer than a day at the ballpark? At Citi Field, Mets fans and foodies converge in one of the most highly buzzed about sports arenas in New York City. Be sure to check out Taste of the City, the amped up food court featuring New York favorites Shake Shack and Blue Smoke, along with a taqueria, sushi market and Korean café.

ROCKAWAY BEACH

Queens is home to one of the only official surfer beaches in NYC: the Far Rockaways. Take the A-train (and a quick 22 | BOROMAG.COM | JUNE 2011

shuttle) to bask in the sun on over seven miles of Queens coastline that make up the country’s largest urban beach. The first Friday of each month features a free sunset concert!

QUEENS COUNTY FARM

Representing over 300 years of agricultural history in Queens County, Queens County Farm is New York’s longest-running farm and museum. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Farm – originally built in 1772 – offers free guided tours each weekend. Hayrides are also available through October for just $2. Check their website for special events, including the annual Queens County Fair. www.queensfarm.org

FLUSHING MEADOWS PARK

Almost 50% larger than Central Park, Flushing Meadows is New York City’s largest park and home to the US Open, Queens Museum of Art, New York Hall of Science, Queens Zoo, Queens Theater in the Park and the Queens Botanical Garden. Upcoming events include the Colombian Independence Day Festival and the Dragon Boat Festival. Queens is the largest most divers BORO of NYC. Discover more at www.BOROmag. com/Explore-Your-BORO.

Story Rebecca McNamara

Greyhound Lucky Streak buses travel between Port Authority and your choice of eight AC casinos. Roundtrip tickets cost approximately $35, but offer a bonus card, usually a $25 slot play card (must be 21 years old to receive one). AC also offers outlet stores, spas and a free beach for non-gamblers.

PLAY: RYE PLAYLAND

Included on the National Register of Historic Places, Rye Playland – the country’s only Art Deco amusement park, complete with attractions built before 1930 – offers rides for both adults and children, including a log flume, a coaster with two zero-gravity rolls and a kiddy carousel. Less than an hour Metro-North ride away from Grand Central (New Haven line to Rye; transfer to the No. 75 bus to Playland), visitors can also relax on the Long Island Sound beach, swim in the pool or enjoy a game of mini-golf. This trail in Hudson Highlands State Park offers numerous views of the Hudson River and Catskills Mountains and involves steep climbs over rock ledges. Choose from a shorter 2.8-mile loop or the more strenuous six-mile hike over Sugarloaf Mountain. To get here, just hop on Metro-North (Hudson Line to Cold Spring; on weekends to Breakneck Ridge Station); it’s only an hour away. Parking is also available. Dia Art Foundation’s collection of art, which ranges from the 1960s to the present, is located in a former Nabisco factory in Beacon, just an hour away via Metro North (Hudson line to Beacon). Works by some of the most significant late 20thcentury artists, including Louise Bourgeois, Sol LeWitt, Richard Serra, and Andy Warhol, are on long-term view here. 24 | BOROMAG.COM | JUNE 2011

Finish the day by walking down Main Street and stopping in Hudson Beach Glass to shop the hand-blown glass. Then, recharge with coffee and ice cream at a nearby mom & pop shop.

This outdoor mall boasts 220 outlet stores, ranging from top-name designers like Burberry and Diane von Furstenberg to established brands such as American Apparel and Adidas. Woodbury also offers a Summer Music Series that showcases live entertainment on most Saturdays in June and July.

This park boasts over six miles of beach along the Atlantic Ocean. The best way to get here is by car – Zipcar anyone? – but public transportation is also available: take the LIRR to Freeport and transfer to the N88 bus to get to the beach. Be sure to visit the Theodore Roosevelt Nature Center to learn about the surrounding environment and complete your trip with an evening concert.

*THE BREAKDOWN

PORT AUTHORITY BUS TERMINAL: NQR or 7 train to 42nd Street/Times Square, walk two blocks west; or the E train to 42nd Street/Port Authority.

METRO-NORTH: M60 bus to 125th Street and Lexington Avenue for the Harlem Terminal; or the 7 train to 42nd Street/Grand Central Terminal. LIRR: 7 train to Woodside.

THE WORLD MEETS LONG ISLAND CITY

Ravel Hotel

BOUTIQUE HOTELS ATTRACT VISITORS FROM ALL OVER THE GLOBE Story Daniel Crown

If you notice an influx of map-wielding backpackers rocking their “I Heart New York” t-shirts while stumbling along Vernon Boulevard this summer, fret not. These brave souls might not be nearly as lost as you think. In the past three years, a whole host of luxury hotels have sprouted up alongside the East River, filling Long Island City and Astoria with tourists that in years past would have stuck to the claustrophobic streets of Midtown. Ravi Patel, who opened the Ravel Hotel on the shoreline in 2008, believes the impetus behind the boom is a simple matter of supply and demand. “The city is at capacity,” he says. According to a study requested by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, 48.7 million people visited New York City in 2010. While the exact number of hotel rooms available is a tad bit fuzzier, most experts believe the total rests somewhere between 100,000 and 150,000. “Do the math,” Patel says. “There is always a shortage of rooms.” With its quick access to Midtown, close proximity to La Guardia airport, and seven subway lines within walking distance, Long Island City/Astoria is perhaps better suited than any other neighborhood to pick up this slack. And, as Z Hotel New York representative Jenna Newmark points out, it does so at 2530 percent of the cost of staying in Manhattan. “Rates at the Z Hotel start at $199 a night, which is a steal for New York, where you can see rates that typically start

around $350 to $400,” Newmark says. “With the Z Hotel offering complimentary hourly shuttles through the concierge service, a quick cab ride or one stop on the train… it’s an easy way to be right by the city but [still] save money!” This business model seems to be catching on with potential builders. When Patel first opened the Ravel in 2008, he did not have much in the way of competition. Since that time, Patel says that nine different hotels have opened in the LIC/Astoria area, including the aforementioned Z Hotel, the Queensboro Hotel and the Verve Hotel. Both the Z Hotel and the Ravel Hotel offer tourists four-star amenities. The Z features a rooftop bar that overlooks the East River, while the Ravel offers a penthouse restaurant that draws tourists from all over the world. Perhaps most beneficial to Queens, though, is the fact that many of these travelers are sticking around. Patel specifically cites the scores of European visitors who desire a far more comprehensive feel for the city, as opposed to those content to camp out around Midtown. “A lot of our travelers are extremely educated,” he said. “They want to see more things in the outer boroughs. There are a ton of things to do inside of Long Island City itself. And the nightlife in Astoria has really come up big as well.” Considering that most of Long Island City’s hotels are working at or near capacity, it appears as though they are here to stay. In the meantime, locals should keep an eye on the Ravel. Patel plans to expand over the next year by adding a rooftop pool, cabanas and a massive catering hall.
