note

“Maloka Transforms” is perhaps one of the most frequent expressions we have been hearing for ten years now. For every transformation has a reciprocal sense, and in the case of this organization is outstanding: it transforms others, it is transformed by those who interact with it, and simultaneously, in a reflective sense, it transforms itself. Maloka’s daily task is to translate the intention that our society may embrace Science and Technology and head towards innovation, which is only possible through permanent actions oriented by transformation. This is why this annual report is filled with details, a diversity of pieces which add up so that daily life may be better for all. While introducing a diverse report, rich in nuances and wide in its horizon, this letter cannot leave aside the fact that this year Maloka’s friends and ourselves are celebrating and being honored for 10 years of work which confirm the vocation of Maloka and which stress out that we must continue moving in the right direction. Maloka has built new spaces, real and virtual, has contributed to the transformation of fundamental norms concerning science and technology, thus placing them where they deserve in our current society. Maloka has also oriented its efforts to its renovation and expansion as an interactive center. For all these reasons, Maloka transforms.

As a mixed corporation, in its original version, the organization and its board of directors is made up of diverse types of associates. In it you can find Ministries, Secretaries of the District’s government, the scientific and academic community and the private sector. Some are founders and perennial associates of Maloka’s Corporation without additional quotas. They feel that Maloka has become a part of them and their employees receive lifetime benefits.

Transform - 10 years

Maloka opened its doors on the fourth of December of 1998. Since that day it has become the most innovative cultural, educational, scientific, technological, recreational and touristic project in Bogota and the country. It was conceived thanks to the initiative of a group of scientists from the Colombian Association for the Advancement of Science, ACAC, with the support of Colciencias, Bogotå’s mayor and multiple allies from the public and private sector. With a clear idea of breaking paradigms, Maloka has transformed its vision and actions permanently to be able to fulfill the mission which inspired its founders: to contribute to Society and Economy of Knowledge, Learning and Innovation, through multiple strategies to generate significant learning experiences for all audiences and ages.

Maloka has given its support to many national and international initiatives such as Explora, in Medellín; Neomundo, in Bucaramanga; El Parque de la Cultura (The Culture Amusement Park), in Barranquilla, la Sala del Banco de la República (The Republic’s Bank’s Hall) and the remodeling of the museum of the Parque del Café (Coffee Amusement Park), in Quindio; and the Museo del Agua (Water Museum), in Quito, among others.

The data numbers and the impact on other similar initiatives come to show the challenges faced by the people who believed that it was possible to develop multiple comprehensive and creative strategies to achieve social appropriation of Science, Technology and Innovation.

Maloka has met more than 18 million of people in different places and it has visited nearly of 200 towns.

In these ten years Maloka has become an innovative way of being and of doing which has rubbed off on the whole country and is Colombian society’s patrimony. 15 04

the politics is to transform the country In the course of this year, Maloka has actively participated in the construction and execution of public policy concerning Science, Technology and Innovation next to ACAC, Colciencias and other entities. We did a very important job in the Science, Technology and Innovation City Commision. We directed our efforts to

changing Law 29, 1990, turning the current National Science and Technology System into the National Science, Technology and Innovation System, which is located in the Administrative Department of Science, Technology and Innovation, and establishing stable and growing financial sources for the country’s Science and Technology.

Scientific Activity became stronger thanks to the approval of Law 1286, 2008.

Virtual Maloka’s world overflows internet’s frontiers and that is why we have turned friends’ and allies’ websites into places full of possibilities: virtual applications, multimedia and web environments. This year our human and technical team, who builds our virtual journeys and spaces, has grown and reinvented maloka. org and a new vehicle: PAM (Proyectos a la Medida) Tailormade Projects. Its purpose is to recreate journeys to cyberspace.

Virtual Maloka took Maloka ScienceCycle to turn it into a virtual cycling journey. During the virtual observation race called “Science at Full Speed”, cybernauts developed their abilities to travel through internet, sailed and explored virtual spaces that allowed them to see the dynamics going on in Bogota related to the generation, appropriation and use of knowledge.

By seeing through virtual eyes they managed to identify how different sceneries appear about various bycicle lane routes, like research centres and public and private institutions where science is generated every day. Our ally was the City’s Secretary of Culture.

We travelled around Colombia and in the Run Colombia journey we explored its geography, its businesses, its educational and connectivity programs, its culture, its scientific and technological development research centers. Travelling with the online Google Earth software questions and challenges were put in front of the cybernauts.

This trip was a part of the cooperation agreement made with the Colombian Ministry of Communications to design the observation race “Colombia Run (Corre Colombia)�.

Our printed newspaper, Encounter (Encuentro), which we have always been able to touch in the real world, has been transformed into Virtual Encounter (Encuentro Virtual), bits and bytes to allow you to accelerate your journey through cyberspace. Navigating teachers go from here to there in a virtual identity and construction space where the newspaper’s subjects are feedbacks for each others, reinvent themselves and expand.

Teachers can materialize subjects and experiences from the digital world that can make the learning process in the classroom easier. 31 04

There is a cyberspace workshop for virtual invention. That is where virtual Maloka creates the PAM (tailor-made projects) through the multimedia production line.

With Colombia Connects Itself, a virtual environment, Colombians are sensitized to be able to appropriate the Communications and Information Technologies, though having a critical position on the subject to begin with.

We created the Virtual Adventure Game Nestlé so that young people are sensitized and reflect about the importance of a balanced diet and improving their health. A project for little ones and older ones

Our ally for this project is Nestlé of Colombia S.A. The multinational’s president in Switzerland asked that this tool be shared with the whole world.

We created a virtual space to promote Network for Innovative Businessmen’s (REI) activities and learning processes. We developed the virtual environment, validated our proposal and elaborated its contents. That is how www.rei.gov. co was born. The Secretary of Development is our ally.

To explore the Interactive Center’s world it is necessary to go underground. Its 17.000 square meters of interactive rooms, distributed in 300 modules, the Mediatheke, the Store, the restaurant and the Coffee Shop are 10 meters below the surface. It is the first science and technology interactive center in the world which is subterranean and transparent at the same time. Visitors can interact with different sceneries and modules in its nine rooms and take a risk in the exploring world where you can learn about subjects like water, the universe, telecommunications, the city and life, because the premise it is built on is “Forbidden not to touch�; to rise passion for science and technology, encourage national talents and destroying paradigms in a world that transforms itself every day. Maloka has transformed the underground world into an adventure.

In an interactive room called the Palace for Children in Neiva, the people from Huila and other visitors discovered a new meeting point with their families and friends. Children live fascinating museographic experiences and have fun in this place while they learn touring through science and technology paths.

Maloka defined a pedagogical model for visits in this room and devised a museographic proposal in which water, technology and graphic, audio and visual components are the main characters.

Visitors discovered the marvels of science and were amazed by the experiments and physical phenomena produced under an enchanted tent.

To develop this project, Maloka made various agreements with public and private schools and alliances with travel and tourism agencies.

Just like Melquíades and his gypsies, mythical characters from Hundred Years of Solitude, one of Gabriel García Marquez’ novels, connected the imaginary town of Macondo with the world, Maloka brought together the fascination of interactive modules with the magic of theaters in just one stage to be able to take to the visitors science and technology’s prodigies in day to day life. Melquíades and his gypsies’ Maloka emerged this way. The giant bubbles, the magnifying glasses and the kaleidoscope, aerodynamics and the laws of Newton, with its airplanes and rockets, cinema and photography, energy transformation, cryogenics and power come together in one space to ex-

Without mixing dyes, Maloka has changed the color of water. The magic of water and colors took over the Maloka Square. The fountain show transformed itself. Spectators froze with “70 degrees below zero”, which shows polar explorer Ernest Shakleton and his 27 fellow men’s extraordinary journey to the Antarctic, the coldest continent on earth. It was the trip a human being ever made to the Antarctic. The intrepid sailors launched into this adventure in spite of the bold warning in the selection announcement: “Brave men needed, return not guaranteed”. This movie, as well as “The Mind of a Winner”, is aimed at encouraging teamwork, bravery and the strength of leaders.

Transform - the experiences

It also worked as a time machine with the premier of “Mummies: Secrets of the Pharaohs” on the circular screen. It is a movie that brings ancient marvels to life in an intriguing and historic forensic adventure of our days. Spectators also enjoyed space adventure premier “Fly me to the moon”, an exciting struggle between three intrepid mosquitoes who wanted to fly to the moon on Apollo 11.

With prestigious scientists’ participation the attending audience at Maloka was able to understand how Malaria and the Chagas Disease spread as well as how different countries experience the summer solstice. Theater magic can show scientific attitude and activity. Playful, recreational and pedagogical tools can raise the taste, interest and curiosity for science and technology. The theater creates emotions through the senses which allow spectators to live existential learning experiences and to acquire a taste for knowledge. We did a puppet staging about energy for Gas Natural. We did a theater staging named “The tent of Melquíades and his gypsies” containing five activities which were guided by actor characters. We did several theater pieces for “Maloka CycleScience”, for Science, Technology and Innovation Week, the premier of “Secrets of Egypt” and the Transmilenio Campaign.

Science and Technology are not only to be found in science labs. The Activities and Minimalokas Festival created wonder and interest around scientific phenomena and people belonging to all social layers had access to highly complex concepts. The imagination of children and grownups that came to Maloka changed the way they looked at their day to day life and travelled through a world of principles and home and city artifacts. Easter week in Maloka also had its twist. Visitors changed their perception on numbers and were amazed by our new international exhibition hall “Why Math?” which was created thanks to UNESCO initiative and was conceived by the Centre de Culture Scientifique Technique e Industrielle CCSTI from France. They found the Activities Festival in the Interactive Rooms, where they were confronted by some everyday secrets. Why do we brush our teeth? What does wine have to do with biotechnology? What is the greenhouse effect and how does it affect us? Can we see DNA?

The replica of the first robot that got to Mars was in Maloka. From the Nantes Planetarium, in France, came Spirit’s twin, which was designed by one of the team members who built the first car to go to the red planet. The visitors enjoyed the exhibit “Mars: a planet’s exploration”. In September, the children’s month, youngsters and grownups spent their time coloring suns, drawing stars and painting smiles in Maloka. They designed original costumes to go trick or treating in October, were fascinated by the knowledge adventures in the interactive rooms, went to the Japanese comic strip workshop, and jumped horrified out of their chairs with the Mummies and the vertigo produced by the movies in the Cinema Dome. They were amazed with the inventions they found in Melquíades and his gypsies’ Maloka, made a trip to the fantastic world of day to day Science and Technology and by participating in challenging tournaments, discovered some myths and legends buried deep in universal history. Children and parents with special kids took over the Prism Hall to celebrate 20 years of the White Day with cultural and artistic activities. Transform - The Media

The Mediateka allows visitors to take full advantage of media and its languages as mechanisms to appropriate, pass around, and socialize scientific and technological knowledge, and at the same time understand the incredible power of physics when you are able to take pictures with a simple wooden box, or make your own program taking the marvelous world of sounds and images in. In a privileged place for visitors you can find the Documentation Center with more that 1.800 books and 3.400 units, among which you can find magazines and audio and visual equipment. Children and grownups of all ages comprehend the New Information and Communications Technologies in the telecommunications and universe halls transversally, to be better able to understand its logics and impact on day to day life.

You can live how audiovisual communications transform themselves in the Mediateka. Hundreds of digital format productions replace old analog movies to contribute to the appropriation of science and technology.

The little explorers discovered the Telecommunications Path where they observed its history, technological development, and its influence on society. These are the Pedagogic Expeditions, Maloka’s offer for the school audience.

Transform - The Adventures

In their journey they found the Path of Energy and they were able to observe its importance on everyday life, that there are conventional and non conventional types of energy and that it is possible to cook using the sun’s heat. The Environmental Path took them across the hall of Life, the City, Biodiversity, and Water to show them that our life is a process of life in where we interact with diverse organisms and habitats in which we must preserve our resources. In Melchiades’ tent they followed the path of the science of everyday things and how Macondo’s inhabitants were surprised by all science and technology marvels. Later on they followed the Path of Light, stopped by a giant bubble factory and transformed with the distorting mirrors and learned to build kaleidoscopes in the Reflection Station. The children put their skills on proof in the First District Olympics of Hydraulic Rockets, where 43 schools participated.

This year we also developed, together with the City’s District Education Secretary, the School – City – School program, one of Maloka’s pedagogical experiences, where the District Educational Institutions’ students and teachers made the city their own and established a relationship with their work in the classroom.

17.500 students and 438 teachers visited the interactive center. With Gas Natural we developed a non formal educational process that District Schools generate significant lessons related to the use and care of clean energies. 17.000 students and 425 teachers from District schools and foundations were present. With ETB children also learned telecommunication concepts and their impact on day to day life. 15.000 students and 375 District school and foundation teachers experienced the adventure of knowledge.

Around a cup of coffee, teachers talked to specialists about the challenges of teaching sports to people with disabilities in the Pedagogic Coffee Shop. In Teacher Afternoons they breached topics both fun and exciting; from ways of liberating your body to Origami and Kirigami as didactic tools for teaching mathematic. On Digital Thursdays they learned to use basic website tools that they can use to work in the classroom, to unload digital books in different formats and ways to make the best out of Gmail applications.

A methodical and structured monitoring to Bogota’s most dynamic job market sectors is done with the help of the District Program of Monitoring and Orientation on the New Types of Work and Occupation. With the purpose of creating an information system, new, emerging and changing occupations have been identified and disclosed. People who have intentions of getting better training, and/or are in the process of bettering their education, who require information about the city’s human resources needs to take their decisions as well as entrepreneurs form diverse strategic sectors have benefitted from this program. Citizens receive orientation regarding demands for occupation in accordance with their actual and future needs.

“The orientation’s contribution is to help young people build a more global view with complete, realistic and pertinent information.� Middle School Teacher We have 220 descriptions of new, emerging and changing occupations in six of the most important sectors of Bogota which describe the human capital needs so that citizens may be informed. Twelve public schools have have joined in the process of forming orientators. A group of 65 trained teachers have influenced 932 students. 13 groups of teenagers, in other words, 83 teenagers have been able to make use of their knowledge concerning strategic economic sectors and occupational development opportunities. 780 organizations were summoned, businesses, associations and educational institutions, to get to know and participate in this program. We were able to count on the attendance of 130 organizations, businesses, juvenile organizations, associations, experts, academics and governmental entities in 24 Seminaries organized by sectors.

“The Science and Technology Clubs were for me an experience where I was able to learn in a different and fun manner, where the restless child eager to discover, interact and play around with science and technology in me woke up, subjects that became my interest and joy, and which led me to where I am today, the crib of many people’s life dreams where mine is this great family and home named Maloka.” Daniel Bejarano.

During the past seven years the Science and Technology Clubs have worked with boys, girls and teenagers to motivate their f a s c i n a t i o n , a m a z e m e n t and i n t e r e s t in exploring and experimenting in different scientific fields. From its beginning they have encouraged the participants’ creativity, teamwork, proactiveness and a critical posture so that they

can be able to strengthen spaces where children and scientific community members can exchange day to day experiences related to science and technology. The children members of the club have passed in seven years from the live collection this interactive center displayed in the “Hall of Life”, where they could see iguanas, marine aquariums, wolves and snakes, among other animals, to exploring in the fields of robotics, astronomy and other science and technology fields.

They discover and strengthen their scientific and technological vocations, which stem from recognizing their own interests and from the social references they live with, and they make productive use of their free time so that they can enjoy the fascinating world of transformation from the standpoint of science and technology. 192 work sessions were developed where different topics related to robotics, astronomy, biology, chemistry and energy were approached. In 2008, 300 boys, girls and teenagers were part of the club. The club’s sponsor in 2008 was IMOCOM. Thanks to this contribution, Maloka was able to subsidize 130 boys, girls and teenagers from district schools.

Sebastian Duque, a member of the Robotics club research group and Diego Corrales, this group’s coordinator, participated in the International science and Engineer Camp in Korea. We were the only third world country invited to this event.

Leadership, the methodology that is used for working in the interactive rooms and the service quality are the fundamental competencies and abilities which a Maloka guide should have. Amongst others, we set ourselves the goal to develop local, national and regional exchange mechanisms that make synergies possible and enhance the quality of public policy and appropriation strategies in different areas. We have transformed the concept of environmental education in school. Together with the teachers we have thought about how environmental education permeates the curriculums in educational institutions, even universities, and how to contribute solutions which will allow us to have more life quality. In our Meeting with Great Teachers, which we have dedicated this year to environmental subjects, we have approached different strategies to strengthen environmental education in our country. Our international guest was Doctor Eloisa Trellez Solis. She is a physicist with a PhD in Science specialized in Research Techniques applied to environmental education. The Science Theater was on Transmilenio and more than 2.500 of its users were benefitted by a science and technology show.

With the II Week of Science, Technology and Innovation we discovered new fascinating and transforming sceneries. We took scientific and technological knowledge to more than 20.000 people, got on a Transmilenio with the Science Theater, moved the Museum of Natural History of the National University to the Market Place in Paloquemao and found in our way new audiences and science and technology allies.

We developed scientific activities in the Portal Calle 80 Mall and the Tunal Park, took 100 scientists to 100 different places so that they could share their knowledge with kids and grownups, went out to the Cycling Route to spread scientific topics and held our city awake with science and technology. ...The Cycling Route transforms

into Cycling Science

Maloka

We changed the way we can make use of the Cycling Route. As we rode on two tetracleta type cars, which were designed by Maloka, the guides took over the streets and avenues with science and technology workshops with Art, Science and Technology: Bogota bets on Knowledge: Cycling Science.

Transform - Cycling Science

The users of this Sunday exercise were brought closer to basic science and technology concepts through different strategies and products like theater sketches and other playful practices that gave support to the work done in the workshops. They learned to avoid dehydration and insulation, took part in observation races that alluded to the city’s research centers which are near to the Cycling Route and received pedagogical material relating to health, nutrition and mechanics.

Six information cards on health and nutrition, hydration, mechanics, social relationships, disabilities and personal care were made. And the virtual observation race: took place during two consecutive Sundays in the web. This proyect is an excellent tool to get to a considerable amount of people because you can find around one million different cycling routes. We had 12 workshops on the Cycling Route space. My Blood’s Path, My Body’s Nutrients, Water Came By here, ¿Why do we transform food?, Reasoning in Sports, Equilibrium on a Board, Equilibrium on a Bike, No need for Batteries, Under Pressure, Making Concrete and Who Gets There First. The vehicles, because of their design, colors and call capacity; the scientific workshops within the Cycling Route, in order to make science something daily, the theater, used like a jet of communicative elements around science and technology.

where it goes In 2008, Travelling Maloka’s visitors felt the effect of satic electricity on their bodies, could orient themselves by looking at the stars in the inflatable Planetarium and, without having to be geniuses and discovered basic essentials of numbers in the Mathematics Hall.

Transform - Places

Maloka transforms itself every day and changes places. Like Melquíades’ gypsies it arrives in every region charged with inventions and innovative artifacts to seduce its inhabitants with science and technology. Teachers and students were fascinated with the marvels of science, technology and innovation and developed research processes in pedagogy for their regions. Grownups and children enjoyed learning. The Activities festival was a feast for the imagination and creativity with water, flight, electricity and magnetism. En the Perception Room they marveled at the spatial disorientation phenomena and realized that the world around us is not always as it seems because we sometimes have optic illusions.

The Travelling Maloka made up its tents in Cali, Popayan and Barranquilla. Popayan: 37.000 visitors Barranquilla: 86.000 Cali: 34.758. The Aqueduct and Sewer System Company of Popayan accompanied us in Popayan; our ally in Barranquilla was the Colombia Vision

Foundation and in Cali Dragonfly Network was with us. Since the second semester of 2000 Travelling Maloka has visited more than 45 cities, department capitals and intermediate municipalities. It has had 1’008.347 visitors in these places.

Maloka goes to School

Transformar - Schools

Boys and girls learned this year why airplanes, rockets and helicopters fly, understood the magic of Astronomy and learned to extract DNA from their homes. In their own classrooms they marveled with the Global Heating, Hydraulic Arm, Atmospheric Pressure, Mobile Robot and Zero Law of Thermodynamics Workshops. We articulated pedagogical initiatives of science, technology and innovation education with the educational community’s dynamics and drew up learning strategies that allow significant pedagogical processes to strengthen in this field.

Gas Natural in School: 17.000 students, 53 District Education Institutions – IED. District Secretary of Education – SED, City School – School City: 8.800 students, 26 IED. FAC, Flight Festival: 2.600 students, 26 High Level Schools. Maloka Goes to School has articulated itself with other programs such as Gas Natural in School, SED City School – School City and FAC Flight Festival. Maloka Goes to School has been in the classrooms since 2007. With its presence in more than 60 public and private educational institutions it has strengthened the development of Science Fairs, Scientific and Technological Knowledge Days and has given its support to classroom curriculums where the students and teachers are the main characters.

We have changed the way to narrate science and technology. With a fun and everyday language we approach various topics and proposals so that research, games and experiments can be done in the classroom and we can access different sources of educational information.

We use all journalistic genres and other narrative elements to promote and encourage pedagogical processes that are a part of Maloka’s diverse educational tools. We want to permeate the educational community and have an impact in the classroom through teaching-learning actions which are innovative, didactic, interactive and playful.

Climate Change was the central topic in the 17th edition of our newspaper Encounter. With this publication we contribute for the purpose of allowing basic education teachers in public and private schools who are leading teaching-learning exercises in science to be up to date and have the tools that will make the development of innovative processes in the classroom easier. We transform and renew ourselves. Now we have a new structure and image. We include supplements which are didactic tools that give support to specific works. Our strategic ally is the Colombian Air Force – FAC –.

Maloka condenses its knowledge to turn it into published pieces, so that there’s a portable way to carry the knowledge experience in a compact manner in a leaflet or an object to interact and learn. Creation and discoveries are in Didaktica Didactic Material Line, a design and development of didactic material products with which we are contributing to the social appropriation of science, technology and innovation. These products transcend school and the interactive center. They promote educational experiences with which to build critical and reflexive attitudes in science and technology subjects starting from the singular contexts.

The Travelling Maloka Fascicles can be used as support and complement to the visit; Nestlé’s makes us conscious about the importance of healthy nutrition in the scholarly population of all the country’s regions. Teenagers between 15 and 18 discovered the basic principles of air and flight as well as the different disciplines of air training with the Colombian Air Force – FAC’s foldable leaflet. We divulged our connectivity route through the Colombian Pacific with the project Pacific Sailor, organized by the Ministry of Communications. To take full advantage of its trips, we made a Guided Schedule to the

School Visit. Here we published all our activities for teachers and students and how they can make reservations, along with

Guided Schedule for Teachers. Teachers can find all the activities that Maloka prepares for the educational community here. The Movie Guide goes deeper into the subject of the movies in the Cinema Dome and offers various approaches, curious information and an infography.

XI Lápiz de Acero Prize We won the Lápiz de Acero Prize in the publishing category with the frog we designed for Norma Publishing House. For the same publishing house we designed Solar Cooking, Elastic Car, Frog and Turbine. VULTUR X-108. This is didactic material which was designed for the Colombian Air Force- FAC. The airplane was distributed to 5.000 children during Cinema Dome and Maloka’s new digital Cinema shows.
