THREE RELATIONSHIPS Point/line/plane, a surface relationship affecting the ground surface Mass a contrasting of elements to exaggerate the underground Frame/infill will be used to explore the above ground Together they will create existence, time and emotions as a tangible structure this will be discovered through precedents, models and drawings.

A place of secrets.....

You know it exists.......

But can you

Point / Line / Plane Playing with the perception of each element allows all three elements to work together to define space. The relationship between the three are up to individuals imagination and perception of it

Stairs, a great play with perception, defining space in different levels through the three different elements. Perception is different at each angle, is the perfect representation of the three different elemental relationships

Object 1

Point/ line/ plane, at its most simple form

I created a model strongly based on the stairs precedent, ing them to create a form allowed perception to play a p the centre as a point, extruding into lines and planes.

m.

, using the replication of the same elements and connectpart in the model, All these elements connect together in

Point / Line / Plane: Playing with perception Using the replication of different scaled frames located behind each other allowed perception to play a part in the model. Joined together with a simple piece of wire allows point to be located, when you look at the model from the front, it’s a plane but on the side they are viewed as lines.

MASS PRECEDENTS Heavy or lightweight, is a constant element that surrounds us. When I think of mass, I think of the most natural representation of such element, rocks. Rocks are something that has always contained mass, sometimes is the representation of it.

Object 2

Mass can also be represented in smooth surfaces, contrasting from the heavy textured rocks, smooth surfaces are deemed to be lightweight and artificial

Object 4

Object 3

object 5

MASS DRAWING By contrasting the rough textured rock structure above the land, to the smooth underground I am reversing the roles of the ground in relationship with the above ground. With such a rough material structure, light is deems to seep through, giving the upper part of the structure a different spatial experience than what is below ground, being smooth and filled with darkness.

Object 6

FRAME AND INFILL Permanent as a frame can be, the contrasting infill is a free, transformative element that lives around the frame. The Alan Gilbert building attracted me when I was thinking about this, I loved how the structure of the building looked so steady but there were so many different things happening within that frame.

I wanted to represent this in its most modest form; therefore I decided to express frame as a simple grid structure, this allows a more contrasting element of infill to seek through.

With such availability I was able to create some temporary in-fills, with this idea I am able to communicate the fluid in-fills that can be whatever they would like to be with a fixed structured frame.

CONCEPTACLE

Precedent of essence skyscraper idea consists of a frosted exterior glass that is able to ghost the structure I fell in love with this idea as soon as I saw it, I loved how the frosted effect was able to hint at things with This will from this stage on become one of my most focused aspects of design

e within to the audience. hin.

Object 7

In my first conceptual, I tested around with materials that allowed to create a ghosted effect, using various materials of tissue, baking paper and tracing paper, I completed my first conceptacle as a test of the ghosting effect.

During my first conceptacle, I started to realis ing paper, when I first pulled out such mater lowed me to create my second conceptacle making. With a supporting structure within, t what is within

se some of the natural aesthetics some materials like bakrial, it had a natural curve to the material already. This alfocusing on these natural curves that the material was the frosted exterior is natural and also achieves a hint of

SITE ANALYSIS : HERRING ISLAND

1870 - 80 Quarry formed by using the stone to form local richmond roads

1928 - River was deliberatey made by creating a path to control flooding - Named como island

1934 Floof levels reached current freeway deck

1950 - 1960 Scouts occupied the island

1952 Island is renamed “Herring island after sir edmund herring

1970 Scout leaves the island

1994 Herring island becomes a public park

1996 Friends commence revegetation and bird box program

1998 The construction of the ramp

1997 Construction of - The audience - A hill, a river, two rocks, a presence - Cairn - Stone house - Steerage - Tanderrum

2001 Construction of the falling fence

1999 - Construction of the scaled stem

The climate on the island would be largely influenced by its vegetation. At parts that have less trees, would be more prone to heat-waves than those with many trees.

Natural vegetation is more prominent along the outer perimeter of the island, this should be caused by the vast open space in the middle used for picnic and barbecues.

Topography shows that the island is on a gradual increase in height from the waters, with a relatively flat surface on top.

Circulation of the island is m crossing through to the ma There are narrow and wide help people circulate aroun

SITE CHOICE The site I have chosen to build on is the Gallery of Herring Island, built in the 1930-1940s was once a house for scouts and now has transformed into a gallery for many local exhibitions

HERRING ISLAND PERSONAL STORY / INSPIRATION Upon reaching Herring Island, I explored the area and was intrigued by the gallery. Although this place is one of the most history fulfilled places on the island, it has been overshadowed by many of the other mysteries of the island. Going to the island by myself, obviously because there were not a lot of people there, the place felt empty, but in a way it was mysterious because to me nothing is empty unless you think it is. On the island I was lucky enough to have made conversation with an old couple, smiling to them awkwardly I decided I might as well ask them some questions about the island. “Hi!” I awkwardly said while waving “Hello” the lady replied back I walked closer to them and asked “just wondering if I could ask you guys a few questions?” They immediately agreed to the request, so I continued by asking them “Why are you guys on the island? What are you guys doing?” They then told me “We’re here to visit the A4 gallery!” I then asked them “Do you guys usually come here? For the gallery? Or do you guys ever maybe barbecue here?” This was their response “Yes! We actually always come here for the gallery openings, the gallery use to be a Boy Scout house where I use to train in, nowadays we just come for the gallery… we don’t really ever come here to barbecue though, nor do we rarely see people barbecuing here, are you a student?” After a brief conversation about the earth studio subject, they started telling me about some interesting history about the island. This was when I learnt that this island is actually artificial and human built. Ending the conversation with the old couple, I started thinking about what they said… and I realised that I have decided on my site location, I want to make better the Gallery.

INCLUSION OF THE FENCE By honouring the history of this gallery, I decided to take this part of the gallery and keep it there for my next design, I believe it is very important to retain part of the past to remind the presence of the history of this building and also give the locals a sense of familiarity when they visit the gallery. This has therefore decided my site location on the island.

SOMETHING LIKE PAVILIONS, Open or closed is a structure that shapes space and brings out a new spatial quality for its users

Object 8

object 9

Lettuce play – Atelier Altern This Polly tunned/ vegetable patch pavilion in cooperates a structure above ground that is allowing the ground to function. The structure here is shaping space by using frames to allocate its context. The material of this pavilion allows natural sunlight to shine through to the crops, therefore is functional

WOHA Alila villas uluwatu Is a pavilion located in Bali s Bukit peninsula, it is set in an amazing context with an eco-friendly design, this pavilion used a simple cube structure and transformed it into something that honours the context. The spatial qualities of this pavilion allows space and freedom to its users, it functions to inhibit people inside to rest and look at the view.

ICD and ITKE The lightweight underwater nest structure of water spiders is a pavilion that uses the element of line to create a round structure above the ground to inhibit people. The pavilion is used as a resting place for people. Inside are installed lights that reflect the spatial qualities inside the building, this helps to elevate the experience within, contrasting with outside.

MY IDEA OF

Secrets are something to be found, It is not completely hidden, but it is not fully visible As an outsider, a secrets presence can be easily felt Therefore we strive to learn what it is For someone to strive for this secret, they have to be curious.... Hints are the key to curiosity.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

Basic supporting framework of my pavilion development. Taking inspiration from my point/line/ plane model, I created the primary structure to my pavilion. This structure is to be holding the artworks in the gallery.

Frosted exterior choice #1 The exterior was designed with a diverse, dimensional approach whereby the sheets are put together in an in-cohesive, natural way.

Frosted exterior choic This is a more regular the frosted exterior, w natural curves of the m sheets interlock with e they go around the b

ce #2 r approach to with using the material, the each other as building

Underground design The underground is where the store, the toilets and the storeroom are located, Unlike upstairs, the basement uses artificial lighting to define space, it is a public area for communication purposes.

SECRETS PAVILION

SECRETS PAVILION : ON SITE

The pavilion is a circular structure that has a very natural folding exterior, the exterior is a combination of multiples of frosted glass. The effect of this layering allows hints of the structure within to seek through. I want people to be able to experience walking to something that they are curious about, unlike other pavilions I want this one to bring out the curious side of the users, have them wanting and attracted to go to the pavilion and figure out where the hints are leading.

TWORKS AS SECRETS

r my entire experience at Herring Island, I realised that the gals filled with its own secrets, being a gallery itself already carries secrets of many. artwork always has a story, inspiration and meaning behind it. yone perception of art is different so it is up to your interpreta-

de the pavilion people are able to stand alone in a corner of structure to look into someone else’s secret (artwork), placing artworks in the corner allows only one person to do this at a and to gather their own interpretations on such secret.

FINAL MODEL

PHYSICAL MODEL Through the use of this physical model I was able to show exactly how this pavilion is situated in regards to the landforms. I am also able to provide a tangible constructed version of my idea of the frosted glass. These physical models are made out of sketch paper and foam board as the supporting structure. I was also able to add the relic of the old gallery into my physical model to show the context of this pavilion even better.

MY REFLECTION Studio earth has taught me useful ways to communicate my designs through model making, drawings and verbal communication. I have been able to develop on my critical thinking and designing skills through this subject by receiving detailed crits and help from dedicated tutors of this subject. My final design is a design I am very proud of, I look back to my first projects during this course and have realised just how much I have improved since then. The design of the pavilion was purely my creation and my ideas of secrets. Each and every detail of this portfolio is made by care and has taught me just how important every piece of communication is. Point line plane was a great exercise to begin with, as it introduced the concept of the built environment to its students. Mass drawings were a great way of showing the students other communication techniques, also it was taught very well showing the deep relationships within the ground Frame and infill week was when we started building primary and secondary structures, this week was very interesting and informative to my learning and will be important to me in the future The idea of secrets in this subject is open to interpretation, I think that this was a very good idea. By giving a broad topic, students are able to not be restricted by limitations, instead they are constantly learning and developing their designedly thinking to better their design. Overall, this was a very well taught subject all thanks to the amazing tutors and classmates available to me in this course.
