UNIVERSITY HIGH ACTIVITY ANALYSIS Univeristy high school in parkville will be the site of our project for studio fire: in this class we were able to analyse the sequence of the school in regards to layout and also times of each activity. With the help of a classmate who has been to this high school we were able to gather the daily schedules of a student in more detail. The school seems to be organised in a way where the social areas are on the lower level while the classes are organised on the top, a main yard in in the centre of all the buildings of university high as a social place that leads into the main oval which is where our site will be.

WHAT I LEARNT Through this activity i was able to realise that the oval is actually a pretty occupied place during breaks and also before and after school because it is in the middle of the circulation route when students or teachers are trying to get into the school or leave the school. Students usually decide to leave the campus to have lunch therefore also bringing more foot traffic to the site

HOW THIS MAY HELP I think the fact that the circulation route is so focused onto the site may suggest that circulation could play a big role in the building design in the future.

INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL: OAK HOUSE HIGH SCHOOL [SPAIN] The architect that designed this high school highly regarded the community values of the area, he believes he wanted to take on a more scenic approach and make sure that the physical existence of the design was not lost like many contemporary buildings but instead it belongs to the area and sustains itself just like the rest of the environment. The design of this school is very interesting because it is a semi sunken design whereby half the building exists underground whilst the other half is above the ground. The architect used monolithical layers as the main material of this building. A monolithical layer is something that acts as insulation, cladding, and an enclosure system all at the same time, he chose concrete as the main material below the structure but to ensure for the best insulating qualities the concrete had to be very thick. Wood was used as the primary material for above the ground level structure, the material used wasn’t just any normal timber it is a type of timber called the accoya wood, whereby it is a type of wood that has been through processes and will thus not varnish or stain at any time. The half sunken nature of this building allows the building to be more self sustainable, as the lower grounds will never need air conditioning during the summer due to the cool nature of the subsoils, whilst the above ground is a very warm place that includes a rooftop garden, very appropriate for a learning environment during the winter and a beautiful space during the summer.

PRECEDENT STUDY: OAK HOUSE HIGH SCHOOL I thought this was a pretty interesting precedent because it utlises nature in a very useful way, in a sense that it takes advantage of the natural sunlight on the top section of the school whilst using solid core materials like concrete on the bottom to sustain a comfortable cool tempreture during the summer, i thought this was a very interesting way to use nature.

PRECEDENT STUDY: RICHMOND HIGH SCHOOL I wanted to do one of my precendent studies on richmond high school because i thought that it was a very modern intellectual school that is build for every type of student in the vce level. I first did some research of the basic information about richmond high and then split the functions of each level to see how they organised the spaces to promote pedagogy. I think that this was a good way of approaching the precendent studies WHAT I LEARNT This school was organised in a very interesting way and provided me basic knowledge of how circualtion inside the school could run. by proving a alternating use between creative studios and quiet areas, students are able to constantly circulate around the school to get to where they want therefore making use of every area of the school The central opening high ceiling area is what brings the whole design together, a place where everyone can be connected no matter what floor they are on WHAT I WANT TO TAKE ON BOARD I think the idea of a skylight with an opening system is very useful because it brings the whole school together and promotes pedagogy inside the school by connected everyone from different areas of study just through the big open area created for EVERYONE.

PANSION , USA Cascade high school focuses on two main purposes in its extension design of the sporting facility in the school. It primarily wanted to make sure that the design merged with what already existed, it did not want to be known as the new part of the building but instead worked with it. The spatial organisation allowed for this merge to happen as the extension functions connected to what already pre existed. This created a sense of unity but also still allowed the building to take on a new structure. The sporting facility was still in the heart of the building serving the main function of the school The outer cladding also allowed the building to merge as one and work with the community. polycarbonate panels were installed throughout the exterior of the whole school. In the morning the cladding would allow natural sunlight to shine through into the facility and at night time the lights within would shine through the material and become the beacon of the town, working with its community and also highlighting its existence.

PRECEDENT STUDY: CASCADE HIGH SCHOOL SPORT COMPLEX I chose this precedent because i thought it was a very beautiful design for a sports complex, i was drawn to the material that they decided to use, the polycarbonate boards are more durable than glass and can play with the idea of transparency I thought this was pretty cool as it could let line shine in during the morning whilst being able to provide light for the site at night. may be something interesting to develop on.

HAPTIC OBJECT The brief for this week was to use something that already exists and change it into something else whereby the users can actually interact with the item. I started this process off with some idea generation.

THE OBJECT The object that i have chosen is a wall, i wanted to make this wall a more interactive experience by using panels that can actually turn when the users engage with it. The panels will also reflect and block out light depending on how the users interact with the item playing with the idea of LIGHT.

What is your relationship with light? lig something that we can’t live without, given to us through the natural daylight it has now been portrayed in light, artiicial ways as we have created our own kind through the many years of development through technology. with the everlasting resources of light, we humans have forgot the importance of it, what it feels like to be in the dark, and what it feels like to nally arrive to the morning sunlight where the world is again able to be seen. Through my object I would like to portray the idea of lost light and the idea of hope when light that we are able to control shines through to us. if we allow light to come through to us, it will reeect the space and allow it to take on dierent shadows and highlights throughout the interior allowing people to see the importance and play of such an shad important element of our lives.

OUTCOME The presentation went very well, i was able to explain my idea of a play with light, this panel idea could be bought into my future design as a way for the users to be more interactive with the building, instead of something that is built on the site for the users, the users will be able to “build a section of the building whenever they interact with it therefore making it BELONG to the site.

SITE ANALYSIS The site seems to be giving each building for one function instead of working together and having multiple functions in each building. The presentations for this class were very informative and i was able to learn about how the sun travels around the school and importance of the heritage wall. The sunlight aspect will have to greatly considered in the future design plan as the open space will allow for alot of sunlight which if shading is not properly installed can cause a really uncomfortable design when it comes to experience

SITE ANALYSIS The process of building the site model was pretty fun, we all realised just how tall the hospital building was compared to the rest of the school, and that the site we are building on is so surrounded by different types of views from every building. More importantly it was an interesting day building small buildings and seeing the scale of stuff

SITE ANALYSIS : OUTDOORS The outdoor area of the school seems to be very focused on a central social area, the only areas you are able to see greenery is on the oval ( around the sides only ) and the central courtyard. During the lecture students of university high was invited over to voice their opinions about the school and they thought that the greenery should be preserved or even increased because there really just is not enough of that. i thought this was definetly a pathway to progess into, an idea of nature.

SITE ANALYSIS : INDOORS Classroom arrangements in university high were pretty simple, rows of seats facing the teacher. The school gives off a very warm experience with the use of the brown shaded masonry all throughout the school. If a modern building were to be built next to a building as such a relationship should be built upon because this school seems to really love their heritage. In another case, i really disliked the locker area in this school as it is very small and does not promote personal space. I feel like this is something i really do not want to bring into my deisgn. disability support at this school is only done through a movable rail chair no lifts....

PRECEDENT STUDY : FORM

BUDAPEST MUSEUM - SANAA PROPOSAL

I chose these precedent because i thought it was really interesting how thse designs were able to connect with the landscape. Nature being the main focus point of my design i want to find ways where i can connect the existing site with the new, i dont want to create something that does not belong. Both these precedents were able to use sloped and stairs as a way to connect to the landscape and i thought that was a very nice way, it almost seems like these buildings grew from the ground.

EWHA UNIVERSITY

FINDING FORM The process of finding form was made easier when in class we were able to do quick idea activities that allowed me to draw alot of random ideas that i did not know i even had. After class i decided to develop more into the potential forms that i could possibly use. this form i have created here on the third page involves an idea where it rotates into the landscape, and intergrates with it. This idea was based on the precedent studies that i did on that same week, where the use of a slope can help the building create a more unified look with the existing site. One of the main problems with this was that i was not sure if there would be enough space for all the requirements of the brief. alot of the spaces would have to exist below ground which can mean that the car park will have to be removed at some parts....

POTENTIAL IDEA #1 This idea involves the building merging into the landscape, also able to connect the school in a way where people can view the sports complex where ever they are. this design promotes connectivity but also the want for a design that connects into the landscape. Through this idea i am able to achieve a school design that works together as a building and also works with the site. I also tried to see what other possibilities there were for maybe disconnecting the building, but i thought that may ruin the idea of connectivity.

ARATA ISOZAKI -Worked under kenzo tange -He stayed as a proficient architecture leaving an impressionable stamp on Japan -Pure shape and spaces -Merged the ideas of brutalism and Metabolist architecture -He created architecture so personal to its spaces that it does not conform to any type of style, instead it creates solutions to the political, social and cultural contexts of the client and the site. Evolution of his works can be split into 5 thematic groups theme 1: genesis of imagination counterproposal to the planning that was underway at the time, this concept wanted to remove the horizontally limited rectangular sections by changing the growing forms horizontally in the air giving the city a new metropolitan architecture definition theme 2: birth of an architect Japan losing its identity of housing, The idea of an invisible city Direction of ruin : wood, paper and straw Starting point, move on from history theme 3 catastrophe japan, he saw architecture was attempting to employ the modernist vocabulary, individual expression, past historical style theme 4: architect as world citizen fit into the utopian vision of the city each context has its own physical, daily life and cultural context theme 5 hyper technology, mature thoughts for a greater change in the 1990s Metabolist architecture, fast construction, electability

UNKNOWN ARCHITECT PRECEDENT RESEARCH For my unknown architect i chose Arata isozaki, after finding out a little bit more about him i realised that he created design that was very unique to himself, through the research into the concert hall i really liked the idea that he used the users walk towards the hall as a way to bring attention into the landscape. It was almost like he created the walk as a viewing area. some place where the exterior can be appreciated... VIEWING AREA...

6 ATMOSPHERIC COLLAGES The 6 spaces ive decided to create are - lobby/reception - common room - delivery - classroom - staff room - entrance The main idea wasa to create a space that brings people together with the way the building is designed. nature is also involved to create a more comfortable experience to the exterior. my favourite atmosphere is the common room, i believe the idea of being able to view a social area from every level is a very important way of connecting the people in a school.

ATMOSPHERIC MODEL This model is representing a play with light and shadow. By having a certain design seamlessly connected to the base it will cast out a shadow that can alter depending on where the light is. The panels on this model are all different sizes casting out different shadows, i think this is also another way to connect to the landscape through the idea of shadows.

OVERVIEW FOR INTERM The general ideas that i will be talking about in my interm presentation my main concern at this point is my response to site will not be strong enough as it only focuses on circulation, the rest is only found through the building design itself.

INTERM PANEL

REFLECTION AND RESULTS Interm presentation did not go as well as hoped, presentation was not prepared enough to have my ideas delivered in a more meaningful way. I seem to have focused my presentation on the idea of transparency and circulation alot when i have not developed the idea to a presentable level. The panel organisation was also a bit questionable with the grey background and the random use of colours. An idea was bought upon during the crit about the redwood forest and how it can frame the design using nature. i thought this was really cool, and i think i will develop into this further

LECTURE 3 One question was proposed in this lecture: “ how to let students focus for long hours i believe this is done through - privacy + places with dividers will provide a more individualised studying experience + places that have no privacy can promote pedagogy through watching others work hard - a hard working environment - muted sound + acoustic walls for classrooms can mute their activity and not distract the people who study close by - lighting + tone, strength and position will matter alot - furniture + is it comfortable

PLANNING FOR FLOORPLAN GROUND LEVEL The ground level is the first level the users will be able to experience, it must welcome everyone and also provide information for what is to come. Sports complex will also be located on this level for a more structurally stable design. I was able to make some variation of the ground floor focusing more on the changing lobby area because i wanted to work with the view the people in the waiting area will have.

PLANNING FOR FLOORPLAN FIRST FLOOR Level 1 will be where most of the classroms will so that they are not far to get to from the ground floor and can also view the sports complex in a more comfortable angle. on top of the sports complex there will be an aerobics and gym centre so the sports areas can all be aligned together and watched from the other side inside the main learning complex. The iterations i have here are just a play with the different ways to organise the rooms and the lockers.

PLANNING FOR FLOORPLAN SECOND FLOOR The second floor i thought would be a good place for some classrooms but mostly for staff members. I believe staff members deserve their own private area where students wont be walking near it all the time, therefore giving the students a more unified type of experience within themselves. the staff area will be able to overlook the general courtyard and also the entrance therefore still be able to connect to the exterior and the students in a more private type of way.

A DEVELOPMENT OF CONCEPT To shape the current site, with a more extensive analysis i realised that i should frame the design so that it allows an interaction with the existing landscape. Therefore this plan you see here is the new vision where the building has one side that faces the existing trees on the north side of the site. I also created a storytelling timeline of how many an entrance could look like.

AN EXPERIENCE OF ENTRANCE

OPENESS A VIEWING AREA

Connected to the common room gives of an experience of nature and connectivity This area will be able to view the existing greenery on the north side of the site

A RELATIONSHIP TO NATURE REDWOOD FOREST After interm 1 i was able to begin a new idea, an idea of framing my design using nature. This idea, can help guide the users to different places on the site. I am planning to maybe use this idea to shape entrances, the way you experience that walk into the building. Inside the building these columns could also lead the circulation.

PRECEDENT STUDY THE CLUBHOUSE - BURASIRI I chosen this precedent to talk about in class because the pain purpose of this design was to make this house looked like it belonged to the site, something like a forest. The design related to the site really well, the story of how this place was close to the sea and the forest nearby was a really popular tourist destination sparked the idea of this house. After the red forest idea i was not sure if it was actually possible to build something like this, but this precedent was a really good encouragement.

PRECEDENT STUDY KANAGAWA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOP / JUNYA ISHIGAMI This precedent, bought up by my tutor has three 3 elements in their design. 1.The division of the spaced 2. The transparency play with the columns 3. Lightweight atmosphere with a seamless curtain wall These 3 elements are something that i really wanted to focus on. This design helped me see that it is possible. On the plan, it explains that areas for different functions are spaced out with no columns but from the outside you are not able to tell that the area is spaced out. I thought it was really nice how the whole design seemed to provide a different view depending on where you were walking. the columns were something that guided your experience and when a there was a space where the columns were less you were able to tell that you arrived at some sort of destination.

FINDING THE COLUMNS I realised to truely frame the design i must start with the existing vegetation. I firstly measured the distances between the existing vegetations to have more of an idea how the building could sit and how the circulation may be led. I then drew out multiple types of forms that focused on this circulation route.

SEQUENCE OF COLUMNS - FORM FINDING

SHADING For the consideration on shading, i really wanted to incoperate the idea of nature in the shading system, therefore the ideas that i have raised here are all ideas that relate to nature.

THE DESIGN AT THIS POINT The design right now had 3 levels and each level is angled differently so that all 3 levels can have different type of views. The sports complex will be on the bottom floor, covered on the top but not around the sides.

SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT The classrooms should be able to be opened to allow for different classes to take place in that area the skylight should also be alot bigger to allow in light and function as a useful skylight system I was initially going to use glass to surround the whole design but have realised that at some parts according to the sun path should be concrete or something that blocks out light. classroom shape was also initially in a different shape but i have decided to go back to a rectangle classroom to allow for the best functioning space.

- The sports complex is no longer outdoors instead it is covered with a wall that will most likely be glass or somethins similar to allow visibility - The plans for the 1 & 2 floors are not sharp anymore instead they have a more comfortable shape for a more proper usage - Acoustic pods are in a triangular form - Classrooms are lined up for easy circulation - 4 fire stair cases are seen visible now - gym and aerobics centre now have a direct view of the sports complex - a skylight was introduced

LEVEL G

LINE OF ACCESS FLOOR PLAN VER 3 - Spectator seatin was changed due to the uncomfortable installation on the curvy side of the wall - Fire stairs were reduced because of my misunderstanding of the standards LINE OF ACCESS so far the columns will be directing the users in the lines drawn in that diagram

EXTRA PLANNING - looking at the existing tree in the main courtyard as the focal point or the beginning of the circulation into the building - looking at the standard requirements for building a school, this construction standards will have to be met through my design

School Lockers Personal lockable storage, built tough and durable with aesthetic appeal and functionality.

EXTRA PLANNING - Loooking at the size of the lockers and figuring out what type of locker aesthetic i would want. I chose a wooden locker set to match the column atmosphere When i went to visit the site i was not very impressed with the locker placements so i want to avoid putting lockers in a small space.

MIDSEMESTER PANEL For my midsemester panel i was able to prepare a much more informative presentation that got my ideas across more easily. I would definetly have to focus more on the structural parts of the design next and also refine my plans. The shading system / skin would have to be thought about for the final presenation but the form is pretty set by now. comparing this to my interm i was able to create a more visually appealing panel but i would like to add more details into everything for the final as i believe this was still a very basic design.

The ground floor mainly focused on the sports complex and social areas, the level is promoted as a public are that can be hired out for other uses on the weekends to generate revenue for the school. There are two entrances to the learning complex and two at the sports stadium to allow easy access from story street, royal parade and the existing school grounds.

bike storage area is around the side under the shade that will be provided in the higher levels.

FIRST FLOOR

SECOND FLOOR

The first floor focuses on a more semi private area, where you are able to view the sports along the entire lobby, the study areas here promote group work and allow users to work together. classes are placed centrally with lockers surrounding the areas. lockers will be located near the viewing area for space. classrooms on this level also have slidable walls therefore is able to be joined for bigger classes.

The second floor only focuses on the idea of private study, because it is the highest level to reach, people who will go to this level are people who need to have a purpose on the level. therefore this level is perfect for private studies and also the staff office. the stagg office consists of two main offices and a staff kitchen with a meeting room. Study areas on this floor are all private and cater to individual studies, although there a bookable acoustic pods and study rooms.

HIGH CEILING A high ceiling design will allow for a connectivity between all levels, it will also allow for more natural light and an experience of walking into something grand. I believe this will support my idea of connectivity and nature A greenery wall will be used here for better oxygen and connection to the exterior landscape

SLIDABLE CLASSROOM WALLS The idea of being able to slide two classroms open so they can be connected is to promote pedagogy, I tried to create a way of maybe completely removing the wall so that the space can open up as a whole (illustrated in my diagram above) Slidable walls can be acoustically beneficial as they can vary in thickness and insualting materials while the foldable wall that goes up in my illustration will not have the acoustic qualties.

SKYLIGHT The purpose of this skylight system 1. provide natural lighting for the sports stadium 2. provide natural lighting to the study area on level two some people may ask what happens if users get distracted by the sports happening below them. The way i wanted to design the tables were so that the users were not able to see the sports complex when they are seated because of the width. Standind up however will provide you with a view of the sports stadium therefore being a very useful way of connecting students when they are circulating around the floor.

POLYCARBONATE SHEETING WALL FOR STADIUM This material will allow a play with transparency, the form will take on many panels of different sizes depending of the form of the stadium walls. The form of the stadium walls were decided by the location of the trees as they shape the way the stadium looks like therefore making the sports area almost seem like it is wrapped around the columns i created. In the morning the columns will be able to be seen from the inside whilst at night the columns on the inside is able to be seen on the outside.

CONSTRUCTION DETAILS load will travel from the metal deck roof onto the steel purlin and joist system which then will flow down a column system with also some precast walls -> into the post tension slabs. The slabs will then again transfer load into the columns and precast walls. The process repeats itself until it reaches the ground into a set of strip footings and pad footings depending on the load On the sports side, load will travel from the metal deck roof onto the same second floor system and is then held up by 3m high truss system that holds the area ontop of the sports stadium. The load then travels down thick columns into the ground

ATMOSPHERE & CONSTRUCTION DETAIL The viewing area will consist of many preforated panels of the same cut outs, the greenery will be vines that can grow through the preforated areas creating a naturally growing side to the building. the shadows this will cast will be something special to the building.
