Executive Summary Another productive month has passed, leaving an almostcompleted project in its wake. Permanent light fixtures now brighten the space, and the recently hung decorative wall coverings offer texture and character to the corridors. Finished floors and detailed tile-work mark yet another milestone in the progress. It is clear that over the past several weeks, the area has been transformed from a construction site to a soon-to-be place of healing.
E&V would like to commend the hospital staff for their patience and enduring positive attitudes during the modifications. There is a light at the end of the tunnel, and in just a few more weeks, we will scratch off yet another major milestone with the completion of 7 North. Joe Novakoski, P.E., LEED A.P. Vice President / Senior PM
Behind the scenes, a team of hospital personnel, architects, engineers, and contractors are working hard to prepare for the start of the remaining phases. The renovations of 8 South and 7 South will begin soon, posing another set of challenging activities to tackle. One area under detailed planning is the relocation of the NICU. In order to provide the best environment for the hospital’s youngest patients, a suite is being prepared on the 9th floor, far from the future construction zones. In a “sliding puzzle” fashion, the team has strategized the moves required to make such a shift possible.

Did You Know? Almost every one of us has, at one time or another, been completely frustrated or overly elated while playing with a sliding puzzle. The original sliding block puzzle, invented in the late 1870s, was known as the 15-puzzle - fifteen blocks for 16 slots. By 1880, the puzzle became a craze, coupled with cash rewards for puzzle solutions and hysteria over patent rights. Mathematical studies have actually determined the solvability of the puzzle. A 43-move solution is optimal for a 15-puzzle, and 24 moves is ideal for the more common 8-puzzle. For a real challenge, try the 24-puzzle that has roughly 7.76 x 1024 possible solutions!

This month’s spotlight goes to Allied Electric. As we move towards the end of the 7 North phase, Allied has maintained their schedule while working with all the other contractors to keep the phase moving on time. They have done an especially good job coordinating with our carpenters, installing the electrical devices in our casework. Thank you, Allied Electric!
