Construction at Mercy Health Saint Mary’s

Bed Tower

Cafeteria www.elzinga-volkers.com

Executive Summary Summer is finally here, and with it comes a bustle of activity at the Mercy Health Saint Mary’s campus. The new cafeteria and penthouse additions have now taken shape. Below, the main structure is now complete. Masons have been busy building the block wall on the south end. Once this was finished, the steel crews were able to bear their steel on the wall and complete the remainder of the elegant structure. Up above, there has been quite a lot of activity involved with the penthouse addition. Unlike below, this structure bears on the existing building, meaning that every tie in location involves pealing back sections of roofing. Every day, roofers must open up areas for crews to work and then seal the area up before nightfall. It is quite a challenging task, but the structure is up and now has a roof of its own.

The bed tower renovations are off and running once again. Since our last update, the hospital departments moved into their new spaces and have cleared southern halves of the 7th and 8th floors. Right after, temporary fire walls were constructed to separate the construction zones from the remainder of the floors. Other infection and life safety measures are now in place, including negative air machines, anti-rooms with locking doors, monitoring stations, plastic barriers and new way-finding items. Demolition crews have nearly cleared 8 South and will soon begin the deconstruction of 7 South. Joe Novakoski, P.E., LEED A.P. Vice President / Senior PM

Cafeteria Structures Are Up! The Look Ahead Concrete is getting poured today, so looking ahead we will soon close in the penthouse and install the roof on the Café. Once the roof is in place, we can begin painting the steel with a special paint that protects from heat in the event of fire. This is common practice for this type of construction.
