SPOTLIGHT ON SAFETY An estimated 2.3 million construction workers, or 65% of the construction industry, work on scaffolds. Protecting workers from scaffold-related accidents may prevent some of the 4,500 injuries and 60 deaths every year. Faulty design and inadequate construction are sometimes involved, but in most cases, scaffold accidents are caused by careless maintenance and improper use. On our site, we ensure scaffolding safety by:
Exterior framing
» Performing daily inspections prior to use
Bar joist completed and decking started
» Boarding, fencing and fastening all platforms » Avoiding a stockpile of materials or overloading them » Forbidding their use during storms or high winds » Clearing the area surrounding the scaffolding
Exterior sheathing completed on north elevation

The Look Ahead
With winter now in our rear view mirror, we are putting the petal to the metal. We are working on all facets of the project. On the interior we are finishing drywall and working on above ceiling MEP work. Once complete with the finishing we will be priming and starting ceiling grid. On the exterior we are completing the brick, starting exterior concrete and finishing up some of the storm sewer. Dan Faulkner, Field Manager danf@elzinga-volkers.com
