BUILDING BOVEN Holland Hospital - Boven Birth Center Renovation - Construction Update Newsletter
NEW CURTAIN WALL
MAY UPDATE
Julie Cole Assistant Project Manager
It’s been another busy month and the crews are working hard on Phase 1 of the Boven Renovation. Each room is framed up and it is excited to see the new layout come to fruition. The new layout is much different than what was previously at 1 North. The postpartum rooms have finish drywall and most are painted. The shaft of Elevator 5 was infilled and this space is where the new supply room will be. The new and existing steel has been fireproofed. We have knocked down a wall between Phase 1 and existing Boven where we will begin to tie into the existing unit. With all of the trades working in this phase and all of their necessary materials, the space has become a little congested. We really appreciate the team continuously picking up after themselves and consolidating their materials to keep the site safe and clean. Thank you to everyone for staying on top of this! FUN FACT Native-American tribes were the original inhabitants of this area. When the Dutch Calvinist separatists arrived in 1847, they used the Indian Removal Act of 1839 to drive these tribes out. The Ottawa people on the other hand, welcomed the Dutch. A congregation of the Reformed Church in America was established in 1847. Over the years, many more churches were built in this area, which led to the christening of Holland as the “City of Churches.” The city of Holland was officially incorporated in the year 1867. The current population of Holland is 33,581. It is exciting to know that the Boven Birthing Unit is crucial with the population growth in this area.

Looking Ahead Nate Stuart, Field Manager NStuart@elzinga-volkers.com | 231.224.3561 We are just finishing up painting in all postpartum rooms and will begin ceiling install the first week of August. Sliding door systems and headwall installation will begin the second week of August. Bathroom shower pans, shower walls, flooring and tile will start going into place this month as well. This space will continue to take shape as finishes are installed throughout the next month.
SAFETY Matters: Ladder Safety Many of our trade people are working on ladders throughout the project. Falls from portable ladders are one of the leading causes of occupational fatalities and injuries. Here are some tips to use them safely: • Avoid electrical hazards! Look for overhead power lines before handling a ladder. Avoid using a metal ladder near power lines or exposed energized electrical equipment. • Always maintain a 3-point (two hands and a foot, or two feet and a hand) contact on the ladder when climbing. Keep your body near the middle of the step and always face the ladder while climbing. • Do not use a self-supporting ladder (e.g., step ladder) as a single ladder or in a partially closed position. • Do not use the top step of a ladder as a step unless it was designed for that purpose. • Do not place a ladder on unstable bases to obtain additional height. • Do not move or shift a ladder while a person or equipment is on it. • An extension or straight ladder used to access an elevated surface must extend at least 3 feet above the point of support. Do not stand on the three top rungs of a straight, single or extension ladder. • The proper angle for setting up a ladder is to place its base a quarter of the working length of the ladder from the wall or other vertical surface.

This month we would like to recognize Holland Hospital’s Building Engineering and Maintenance staff. This group has done a great job of working with our construction team to solve problems, help keep the project moving forward and running smooth. The “team” approach from Building Engineering is always appreciated!
