BUILDING BOVEN Holland Hospital - Boven Birth Center Renovation - Construction Update Newsletter
MEP ROUGH-INS - PHASE 1
MAY UPDATE
Julie Cole Assistant Project Manager
The north side of phase 1 is completely framed and HVAC insulation has started. The crew is continuing to do through-floor plumbing tie-ins from the Boven Birth Center directly down into Endoscopy. For anyone new to the term “through-floor tie-ins, the hospital has electrical conduits, water lines, med-gas lines, steam lines, chilled water lines, storm drains, sanitary drains and many more utilities the run vertically through the building. Almost all of these items are out of sight and buried within the walls or hidden in the ceiling. In order to get plumbing into the new unit, we need to do through-floor tie-ins from Endoscopy. We greatly appreciate everyone working with us in Endoscopy, as we know construction can pose a challenge to day-to-day operations. The electrical in phase 1 is pulled and is ready for the headwall and footwalls in the new patient rooms. We are gearing up for mechanical, plumbing and electrical inspections. The new IT closet is complete and is waiting for new equipment. You may have also seen the small new addition being worked on in the past month. The steel is set and the concrete has been poured. This area is currently receiving a new roof system and will begin to look like the rest of the building from the exterior. The transformation that will occur over the next couple of months will certainly be an exciting time for the project!
FUN FACT Several towns claim to be the originators of Memorial Day, but in 1966 Congress declared Waterloo, New York, to be the birthplace of the holiday. Memorial Day originally honored military personnel who died in the Civil War (1861-1865). The holiday now honors those who died in any war while serving with the United States. In 1971, Memorial Day became a federal holiday.

Looking Ahead Nate Stuart, Field Manager NStuart@elzinga-volkers.com | 231.224.3561 We are finishing up the shell of the phase 1 addition. The new roof is complete and the curtainwall is being installed. This is a huge relief since we have been working very hard to keep water out of the building while constructing the addition. Over the next couple of weeks, we’ll be finishing the existing space below the addition in order to turn it back over to the hospital. In wall rough-ins are nearing completion for the north half of this phase and we will begin drywall on June 7th. We’ll be working on framing and MEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing) rough-ins for the south half over the next few weeks.
SAFETY Matters Alive365: Keeping A Clean Project Site Above the ceiling, pipes, conduits and ductwork crisscross and intersect walls throughout the facility. Where these utilities penetrate fire rated walls, special firestopping is installed. Elzinga & Volkers is a certified installer of this special material and pays close attention to these critical details. Each “penetration” is identified with a special label that coordinates with an engineered system which protects the integrity of the fire wall system. Although you will likely never see this work above the ceilings, you can rest assured that your building is safe in the unlikely event of a fire.
Starting June 18th, we will begin work in elevator shaft 5 to create a new supply room. We will work alongside Schindler Elevator to construct new floors at the 1st and 2nd levels, with a new separation wall in between.

The Elzinga & Volkers steel crew has done an excellent job with the complicated build-out of the new birthing suite. They have done a great job of staying ahead of the trades and working together as a team with all our trade contractors onsite. Chad Kiester has taken the lead on this project and continues to impress! MEP ROUGH-INS
