BUILDING BOVEN Holland Hospital - Boven Birth Center Renovation - Construction Update Newsletter
PROJECT MANAGEMENT UPDATE Over the course of this past month, the construction team continues to see great progress in Phase 3. The mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire suppression teams have been working around the floor prep to get their rough-ins finished. You may have noticed a little extra noise this past month as we have been preparing the floor with a self-leveling compound in order to achieve level flooring throughout the unit. The Julie Cole-Bouwens required grinding for this process can be a quite loud. Our team has Assistant Project Manager been working with the staff on the floors below and above in an attempt JulieC@elzinga-volkers.com to remain a minimal nuisance to the patient population. We appreciate everyone’s continued patience with our impact on and interruptions to the facility. The construction team is in the final stretch for this project and we promise the finished product to be well worth these short term disruptions.
FUN FACT Did you know the “snowmelt system” located in the City of Holland streets and sidewalks is very unique to the Midwest and in fact North America as a whole? Based on European plaza areas, Holland chose to dream big with this system. Fed from water from the nearby power plant, this not only offers the benefit of snow free sidewalks and roads, but is perhaps also an unknown benefit to plant and animal life. In many cases cooling water from these plants that is dumped directly into lakes and streams can have an effect on the ecosystem due to the dramatic change in water temperature. Holland has successfully mitigated both the snow and cooling water issues with their unique system.

Building Boven - Construction Update Newsletter Holland Hospital - Boven Birth Center - October 2019
Looking Ahead Miguel Delao, Assistant Field Manager MiguelD@elzinga-volkers.com | 616.848.0652 The third phase of the Boven Birth Center renovations is moving along well. Floor preparation and framing are in progress, which allow our trade partners to begin installing cast pipe, conduit, and ductwork in the space. The renovation of the family waiting area will begin this month. The current glass enclosure will be removed. The next step is to install steel beams to help support the new glass enclosure and metals panels that will be added to give the family waiting area a fresh, new look. A new on-call room is being constructed in a different area to better support the Boven team. The addition allowed the opportunity to remove lockers to make space for a new shower, furniture and bed. With a new space comes new paint, ceiling, bathroom tile and flooring which will be completed in the coming months.
This month we want to recognize our trade contractor, Town & Country Group (T&C). Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a 3-D software resource, which helps to coordinate all the above ceiling mechanical, electrical and plumbing traffic. T&C, using BIM, was able to foresee issues and collisions that were not caught in the software. This led to the coordination of trades onsite to plan accordingly and make the proper adjustments. These changes allow solutions to be determined ahead of time to keep the project moving forward, rather than having to stop repeatedly when the issues present themselves in the field. We are thankful for Town & Country Group and their initiative, which benefitted all the trades onsite.
