BUILDING BOVEN Holland Hospital - Boven Birth Center Renovation - Construction Update Newsletter

PENNSYLVANIA HOSPITAL | 1751

TEMPORARY BYPASS WALL

PROJECT MANAGEMENT UPDATE The team is well underway with the second phase of the Boven Birth Center Renovations. We have completed selective demolition of the old space creating an empty shell. Over the past month framing and wall layouts have begun. New HVAC sheet metal and electrical conduits have also been underway. From below new plumbing that will support the new unit has also been in progress. These necessary systems are very challenging for the team to install as they are located on the occupied floor below. However, Allied Mechanical has done an outstanding job in working through these opportunities and ensuring minimal impact to Hospital operations! Stay tuned as Phase 2 continues to come together. FUN FACT Modern Hospitals are extremely complex buildings to ensure the healing and safety of all patients and staff. There is an incredible amount of mechanical, electrical, and life safety systems in place to accomplish this. It is amazing to look back at some of the first Hospitals in the United States to see just how far we have come in development of these impressive structures. Established in 1751 by Benjamin Franklin, Pennsylvania Hospital become the first Hospital in the United States. While an impressive structure at the time it lacked the amenities we take for granted today. The original hospital was not equipped with elevators, medical gases, fire protection, air conditioning and even lacked heating systems in several areas!

SAFETY Matters

Looking Ahead Chris Workman, Field Engineer ChrisW@elzinga-volkers.com | 616.914.1982 We will continue framing for the foreseeable future, while also falling back and installing door frames when they arrive. The electricians and plumbers have started their new rough-ins, mainly above ceiling items, while also installing inwall items where they can. FHC will continue to run new duct, and create tie-in points that continuously feed Phase 3, which will stay live until we turn this phase over. Last, E&V carpenters will start the in-wall blocking as more walls continue to fall into place.

Everyday an estimated 1,000 eye injuries occur in U.S. workplaces. The financial cost of these injuries is enormous – more than $300 million per year in lost production time, medical expenses and worker’s compensation. No dollar figure can adequately reflect the personal toll these accidents take on the injured workers. Because of the high frequency of eye injuries on construction sites, Elzinga & Volkers requires all tradespeople and visitors to wear OSHA approved safety glasses at all times while onsite.

This month we would like to recognize Holland Hospital’s surgery department. Although they are not a part of the construction team, their space is impacted by the construction for Boven because it is right below our space. They understand that we need to make some noise while doing a major renovation, and have been willing to work with us getting into their space to demo sanitary systems and tie in new plumbing. We continue to work with them in scheduling shutdowns like medical gas and domestic water. Their continued efforts help us to get our job done quicker and more efficiently!
