BEING INTENTIONAL WITH BALANCE JOE SHASHAGUAY, SR. SENIOR FIELD MANAGER How are you doing with your work/life balance? It’s something that we should all step back and evaluate from time to time. Here at E&V, we’ve been very fortunate to be blessed with an abundance of opportunities to keep us busy. With our current outlook, this busy season will not be ending anytime soon. The large number of new construction and renovation projects ensures ample work for the entire company. From meeting the owners, building the team, managing the process, marketing to actually putting boots on the ground, it takes the effort of everyone in the company to bring a project to completion. All of us touch these projects in one way or another. My question is, are we taking the proper time for ourselves and family? After all, that is the reason we started working in the first place, right?

working in an operational hospital setting, it is not easy to shut it off when I am away from the project while work is going on. There are so many risks every hour of every day. We are working in an occupied building with folks that are ill, laying in a bed and most likely cannot help themselves. How do we do it? Well, we can start with proper planning. Make sure someone on your team has the proper site contacts and is up-to-date on current project activities. At E&V, it is encouraged that you take your vacation time and truly unplug from your work life. With good planning, you should have confidence that you have a great team in place that will keep the project moving forward. It’s important that you are able to wind down and spend time with your loved ones. If you can’t fully disconnect on vacation, take advantage of the technology at our fingertips. Remember that you can access your project with photos, or do a quick live stream with your cell phone or TeamViewer. Do what works for you, just make sure you do!

Most of us hesitate to disconnect from our work for many reasons. I can personally say that when I am

Our Steel Crew is having a busy summer! The steel team recently wrapped up a pretty large job at Vertellus. Charlie Harter and Kyle Harter (trade partner) were there throughout the duration of the job and made sure it went as smoothly as possible. Since this was a multi-phase project, by the time we got to this phase, Joe Nail was an expert at blowing out panels and was able to work efficiently and effectively. We also had the pleasure of helping out the City of Holland with setting a live sculpture book of the Wizard of Oz in Centennial Park; Paul gets us into some pretty interesting projects! I’ve lived here my entire life and never knew “Oz” was inspired by the city. It’s pretty cool for our crew to have a hand in this project that the Holland residents and visitors will be able to enjoy for years to come. Currently, we are working on two Tommy’s Express locations, fabricating all the stainless steel concrete edge angles for the wash pit area, along with a lot of miscellaneous anchors, dumpster gates and more. Fun fact: including these two locations, we’ve worked on five Tommy’s projects over the past couple years. Joe Nail and Tyler Dokter continue to chip away at Clark on Franklin, a senior living community located in Grand Rapids. After a winter full of shoring and placing structural steel inside the building, we’re now erecting 13 balconies outside the second and third floor apartments. Each one weighs approximately 1,300 pounds and it has been a challenge to get proper anchorage, but Joe and Tyler have done a great job and have started the installation process.

Creative Products, located in Holland near the airport, has been a very interesting project. We have two beams in the shop right now that each weigh 7,500 pounds and will be a part of a mezzanine that we’re fabricating. We’ll be installing them in the next couple weeks. Lastly, Calvin College is getting a new entrance to their campus in Grand Rapids. While drawings are still in the works for a bus stop, we’re expected to contribute some decorative fabricated metal panels. Our crew (Charlie Harter, Joe Nail, Tyler Dokter, Nick Everson and Kyle Harter (trade contractor)) has been working tirelessly over the past several months and we continue to be pulled into different projects. Thanks for your hard work guys!
