DO YOU HAVE 2020 VISION?

JOHN PARKER VICE PRESIDENT OF PROJECT MANAGEMENT From all corners of the West Michigan construction industry, the outlook for the next 12-18 months remains strong, but is not without a healthy dose of caution. I was recently in a discussion with executives from several large specialty trade contractors and we all shared a similar experience in the first half of 2019. While the first part of the year started slower for project awards and project starts, all the companies represented, including ours, are close to filling our respective backlogs through 2020. This is awesome news. In addition to being a busy year, 2020 will also mark the end of our current strategic plan and the launch of a new three-year vision (our painted picture for 2023). For those of you unfamiliar with our planning process, every three years we engaged a large percentage of

the company in an exercise to “paint the picture” of what the company will look like in the next three years. This “visioning” process drives each year’s business plan and helps us make important decisions about the future. Some of the more visible results of previous “painted pictures” include the interiors division, the Grand Rapids office location and our growth nationally. It is a powerful exercise with powerful results. So how do you fit in? Even though our planning retreat is not scheduled until October, we are starting to gather input now. Do you have a big idea for the company? Do you see an opportunity for us to deliver construction at a higher level? We really want to hear from you. Members of the Office Leadership and Field Leadership team are great people to share those ideas with. Of course our doors are always open at the main office, or you can call anytime!

Quick turnaround, overnights and weekends! The President from M&K reached out to E&V to help with a project, despite the fact that they self-perform most of their own renovations, due to the fact that he thought E&V’s quality would be unmatched. This project included demolishing existing water-damaged wainscoting and replacing it with stained maple to match the original. In addition, our general trades division built a custom maple cabinet with wardrobe and plan storage based off of a SketchUp rendering that E&V drew in house. M&K has never hired E&V before, but reached out after hearing from others about our great reputation. Brian White met with him, wrote the proposal and coordinated the work by ordering the materials and getting down to business. Our general trades, and interiors divisions worked hard to get this project knocked out in just three weeks, working overtime on nights and weekends. We want to send a big thank you to everyone who worked on thisproject including: Juan Chavarria, Dan Koscielski, Mark DeGraaf Jr., Matt Harburn, Jeff Wilkinson, George Martinez, Parker Slagh, Scott Scherer and Brian White. We also thank Kyle Goudreau for providing tools and equipment at a moment’s notice. - Layna O’Connor | Assistant Project Manager

Join in on the fun! Since our E&V Softball game was a hit, we decided to do it again but this time playing some kickball! Our Compensation, Benefits and Employee Solutions Committee is hosting a kickball game, after hours on Wednesday, August 14. Please note the location change. This time we will be conveniently located across the street from the office at Riverview Park! Feel free to come and warm up any time after 4:30PM (or after the scheduled EV YOUniversity). Game will start at 5:15. Families are welcome to come and cheer on the team! Questions? Contact Tara Brouwer at tarab@elzinga-volkers.com. BUILDINGTOGETHER | July 2019
