ALWAYS KEEP LEARNING

CORY LOOMANS SENIOR PRECONSTRUCTION MANAGER On Tuesday, May 7, E&V received the Elite award for the Best & Brightest category of Employee Education & Development! Companies are evaluated by the “extent to which an organization encourages, supports and creates a learning environment with a focus on career development”. Our submission included highlights on our E&V YOUniversities, ABC courses, Field Leadership Training, Lunch & Learns, Blueprint for Success training, safety training, conference attendance and much more. E&V invested over $110,000 in employee education & development in 2018! The regional average score for this category was 29.76 and we came in at 38.53, almost 30% above the average. Depending on your stakeholder role in the company, there are different ways to fill your toolbox with what you need to get the job done. For example, a few years ago, Joe Shashaguay attended an American Society of Healthcare Engineering (ASHE) conference to become a Certified Healthcare Constructor (CHC). At the time, we were doing a lot of work at Holland Hospital and he saw the opportunity to invest in his career and get the certification. After talking with him about it, he reflected on that being a big turning point in his career to have the knowledge and confidence to work in healthcare facilities.

Many of our trade employees are taking part in courses through Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC). These classes include Carpentry I, Plans & Specifications, Safety Training, FMI Training, Leadership Series, and other skilled trade training programs. A couple years ago, Ryan Fuller - Interiors Division Manager, recognized he needed some leadership training to help him manage the growing division and team. He took it upon himself to seek out a program at Davenport University that enhanced his leadership experience and created opportunities for him and his team to increase their capacity and be more productive. So what is the next step for you? Maybe it is grabbing a book off the shelf in the main office. Or is it a certification? Think about what training and education opportunities would help you reach your short-term and long-term goals. Challenge yourself to discuss it at your next check-in with your supervisor. Increasing your value takes time and hard work and it all begins with your desire for self-improvement through education and training. There are many people in the company willing to help out, so do not be afraid to reach out to the OLT, FLT and Employee Education and Development committee members.

Safety Week Success! I would like to highlight Elzinga & Volkers interiors foreman, Steve Morgan and Chad Keister, for their efforts at Trinity PBS-K and Holland Hospital’s Boven Birth Center. Steve Morgan took the lead at Trinity PBS-K almost immediately. This project is a two phase renovation which consists of (approximately) 120,000-SF. The first phase (60,000-SF) was completed in just four months, from demolition to occupancy. During that phase, Steve orchestrated the framing of walls and bulkheads, directed the drywall hanging, and managed the installation of ceiling grid and tile. Steve is 56 years young, and one of the most mild-mannered individuals I know. He comes to work every day with the same positive mindset. He doesn’t let much bother him and isn’t afraid to step in to keep his projects moving forward.

Trinity PBS-K

Chad Keister was a residential framer who transitioned to a commercial framing foreman and has never missed a beat. Chad took the lead on an extremely difficult project at Holland Hospital for the Boven Birth Center renovation. This project consists of multiple radius walls and bulkheads and a lot of double layered drywall walls for architectural purposes. When this project is complete, it wouldn’t surprise me to see the project win awards due to the quality and architecture. Chad coordinated the framing, hanging and finishing on this project. He’s a great leader and coach to our up-and-comers; he’s a patient leader who leads by example.

Trinity PBS-K

I’m a firm believer that mannerisms are contagious. If you have a bad attitude, it can impact everyone you come into contact with. Steve and Chad’s positive demeanors are a motivator and I’m honored to work with these two individuals on a daily basis.
