Safety Tip: Eye Protection: Every day an estimated 1,000 eye injuries occur in U.S. workplaces. The financial cost of these injuries is enormous – more than $300 million per year in lost production time, medical expenses and worker’s compensation. No dollar figure can adequately reflect the personal toll these accidents take on the injured workers. Because of the high frequency of eye injuries on construction sites, EV requires all tradespeople and visitors to wear OSHA approved safety glasses while onsite. BUILDING TOGETHER | December 2019

DO YOU HAVE 2020 VISION? MIKE NOVAKOSKI, PRESIDENT/CEO I’ve got a new pair of glasses and 2020 vision… just in time! Earlier in December, I had my annual eye exam. In reality, it had been more like three or four years since my last one. I think I was traumatized last time by how expensive a pair of glasses were, so I felt like I had to get the most out of the “solid gold” pair I had purchased! I was leery to be roped into another big spend, so I felt I was being “thrifty” (or just maybe cheap) by making due with the ones I had for as long as possible. It was time. Honestly, as the CEO of this company, I’m embarrassed to say the glasses I’ve been wearing daily for probably four years were disintegrating for way too long. You may not have noticed that I’ve had matching red electrical tape wrapped around the area the sets on top of my ears for months now because the plastic coating was falling off in chunks and I was nearly getting cut by the sharp edges. Yes; red electrical tape…some professional, huh?! Well, as anticipated, my eye doctor did it to me again. I spent a small fortune (thankfully offset a bit by our insurance) and was sent off with new glasses and an assurance I once again had “20/20 Vision”. I found that reference strangely familiar. This past October, 70+ people representing all corners of EV gathered to debate, innovate and create a vividly detailed strategic plan for the next three years. We refer to this vision as our “Painted Picture for 2023” (PP2023). PP2023

is a unique corporate road map that will guide us clearly towards success over the next three years just as similar plans have for the past decade. We begin executing on this strategic plan on January 1st and refer to the first segment as our “2020 Vision”! Now I’d like to take credit for the cute play on terms here but I’m guessing years ago an elementary student coined the phrase already. Now that I can see clearly and the company has a set vision, it’s time for everyone to be educated and engaged in the parts of the plan they are most connected to. The company will be unveiling the PP2023 in January. The work that is needed to be done as we start in 2020 will initially be broken down by areas/departments/divisions in the company. We will then take these elements and break them down further, assign their execution to committees, and lastly (but most importantly) we will clearly define individual action plans and responsibilities. They say “many hands make light work”. This is so very true as I look back at the last decade and honor each individual and their contribution to our success. Maybe my next blog will share with you my journey to getting hearing aids. My vanity has held me back for way too long, but I definitely need them. Aging gracefully is on my “to-do” list. Now…where’d I put my glasses?

WELCOME TO THE EV FAMILY! Planning the Perfect Party Generally speaking, we like to use this section as an opportunity to recognize a team in the field for doing an exemplary job. This month though, there are two other teams that deserve some recognition, the Christmas Party Committee and the Executive Committee.

Mike O’Sullivan

Parker James

Preconstruction Manager

Firestopping

Tara Brouwer and Norma Fynewever led an ambitious team through months of planning and preparation for the annual event. Brian White, Christian Skinner, Alaina Ekdom, Tami Grinwis and Cody Erickson, along with Tara and Norma, spent dozens of hours ensuring that we all would have a wonderful celebration! Unless you have planned an event of this scale, it can be hard to understand the amount of coordination it takes - from renting the space and picking table decorations, to printing nametags, purchasing gifts and organizing activities, the Christmas party takes a lot of time and effort. Thank you Mike Seiferlein for transporting and assembling gifts. Though not on the committee, Mike was volunteered for a lot of tasks and lightened the task list for the committee. And of course, what would a party be without food, music, games and gifts? A really lame gathering, that’s what! Many companies don’t host Christmas parties due to expense, liability or perhaps a general lack of holiday cheer. Our party is a gift to us from the EC, and not an inexpensive one.

Congratulations to Collin Curtiss, Caleb Benedict, Zach Galle, Naomi O’Brien, Braden Zych and Joe Shashaguay Jr. on their recent graduation from Carpentry I through Grand Rapids Community College.

When you see a Christmas party committee or EC member over the next couple of weeks, be sure to say “Thanks!” for all of the time and resources dedicated to this fantastic event!
