EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE CONNECTION: WORK-LIFE BALANCE? A new term you often hear these days is “Work-Life Balance.” On the surface, this idea is great because it recognizes that we can’t just work all the time, but instead we need to balance work with our “life.” Over time, I have begun to dislike this trendy term because it sounds as if your work and your life are completely separate entities that cannot overlap and are on opposite sides of a balance scale. Instead, I prefer to use the term “Work-Life Blending,” which I first heard from Mike Novakoski. To me, this term symbolizes that life and work are consistent and cohesive, instead of compartmentalizing work so we can enjoy life. Everyone in the company has had an opportunity to develop their own “U-Map,” which illustrates goals, priorities and commitments, both personally and professionally. One area of the U-Map that can be difficult for many of us to complete is the Personal Icon. It took me a great deal of time, effort and self-reflection to develop my icon. As you can see, it has several

components, but the main graphic is work family three overlapping circles labeled as Work, Family and Friends. In the center, where the circles overlap, is a shaded friends area that I call the “Sweet Spot.” It can be difficult to describe, but to me, the “Sweet Spot” symbolizes that I am thankful that my family is interested and engaged in what I do at work, that I’m lucky to have the opportunity to work with some of my family and that I hope my children will someday work for a company like E&V. I am blessed to work with my friends (coworkers, owners, trade contracts, etc.) and I appreciate that my family respects my work and my company respects and honors my family. While I very much enjoy having dedicated time in each of my “circles,” I am lucky that they overlap and that I’m able to enjoy all the benefits of “Work-Life Blending.” Joe Novakoski VP of Project Management

A DAY IN THE LIFE As a busy mom, wife and EV Group employee, Stacy wears many hats. Follow her through a typical day.

Noon to 1:00 PM » Scrape some lunch together from random leftovers I’ve had too long in the fridge. » Some days I find the motivation to go to the gym, scramble a quick change, work out, clean up and try to piece myself together before returning to work looking like a hot mess. Apply more lip gloss and call it good.

5:00 to 8:00 AM » After waking up to my husband’s blaring alarm at 5 AM, I try to doze a little more until I finally give in and get up. » I rush around to get ready for the day before my daughter, Nora (8), and my son, Quinn (8), wake up, usually unsuccessfully. Some days, I snuggle with Quinn when he sleepily wanders into my room in his underoo's. » Coffee, coffee, where’s the coffee!?! » Feed & clothe both kids, pack up what seems like a million things for the rush to school or the sitter. Sometimes I forget my coffee on the kitchen island, after leaving the house, and groan when I discover it. » Smooch the kiddos and then off to work! My 10 mile commute makes for an easy drive as long as I don’t have to wait for a train or construction.

8:00 AM to Noon

1:00 to 5:00 PM

Stacy Chatfield

Recruiter, EV Group

In Stacy's free time, she enjoys cooking, taking family vacations, dates with her hubby, and peace and quiet (when the rare opportunity arises)

» Run for the coffee pot upon arriving to work and nibble on breakfast while I check emails and voice mails. » Meet with James and catch up with Ashley and request an offer packet be sent out. » Call back anyone that I’ve been putting off to tell them they didn’t get the job or that 2nd interview. » Source candidates for any number of openings I may have nationwide (a Carpenter in Florida, a Project Manager in California or that HR Coordinator out in the Middle of Nowhere, Iowa). BUILDINGTOGETHER | August 2016

» Make more calls, source more candidates, submit to our clients, lather, rinse, repeat…. » Put together a proposal or two, check and double check the numbers and hope it’s right! » Enter my activity and candidates into my spreadsheet as my old brain just can’t remember everything. » Depart to pick up Quinn and get home hurrying to make dinner for my hungry tribe.

EVENING... » Time for wine??! Nope not tonight, gotta head to Nora’s gymnastics class, or Quinn’s Tae Kwon Do » Help with homework and baths, books, and my favorite, bedtime snuggles.
