FUN IN THE SUN

The recent company picnic at Michigan’s Adventure was a great time to kick back, forget the stresses of work and spend some quality time with our family and friends. Thank you to all who attended and for the team of people that make it happen every year. I thoroughly enjoyed the water park with my kids (and I had the sunburn to prove it)!

Michigan’s Adventure was also a reminder of how short this summer season is. August is here and I have already seen the dreaded “back to school” sales (Yikes!). Even with the workload that we have, let’s not lose the opportunity to have some fun in the sun while it is still here! For those of you who work on one of our many jobsites around the country, summer is a great time to hold a site cookout, celebration or team building event. We have seen repeatedly that injecting a little fun (and food) into a jobsite can raise morale, increase collaboration and strengthen better relationships with our trade partners. From a simple cookout to a professionally catered lunch, we encourage our field leaders to work with our project managers to organize these events. For those of you working around West Michigan, Elzinga & Volkers even has its own cookout trailer - with all the supplies needed for these events - ready to go.

Summer is also a great time to form new family memories on vacation. The company supports a strong work-life balance and taking vacation is part of that balance. We all need to find opportunities to “check out” and decompress from the stress of our work. Some of the opportunities we have to travel, spend time with our family or see something new may never be available again. If you have vacation time, use it! Vacation is a benefit from the company for you…enjoy it! Finally, summer is a great time to give back. Many churches, nonprofits and community organizations hold events during the summer months and need volunteers like you. We believe that Elzinga & Volkers can be a blessing to the communities that bless us with work. If you find an opportunity to serve, we will work with you to assist. This could mean advertising the event to the company or helping you tweak your work schedule to accommodate a volunteer opportunity. Don’t miss a chance to give back. You will likely get more out of it than you give. Enjoy the rest of your summer and above all else, stay safe!

101 Best and Brightest Update During a visit to the NASA Space Center in 1962, President John F. Kennedy noticed a janitor sweeping the floor. He interrupted his tour, walked over to the man, offered a hand shake and said, “Hi, I’m Jack Kennedy. What is it that you are doing?” “Well Mr. President,” the man replied proudly. “I am helping to put a man on the moon.” To the naked eye he was simply a man sweeping the floor. However, what he is really doing is contributing to an effort; that he has an obligation to NASA to assist in sharing the vision of placing a man on the moon. A construction project is very similar. We work as a team to insure timely completion of our projects while also achieving client satisfaction. We all share the same responsibility of giving an “Unmistakably E&V” effort and experience to both clients and trade partners. To do this properly requires communication and shared vision of the company amongst all employees, using several methods of communication. Communication is a crucial part of everyday life. It lets us know what is expected as well as what we can expect.

Please continue to keep the Brouwer family in your prayers. For more updates, visit Nolan's FB page: Nolan-"No Fear Nolan"

Save the date This year's Christmas Party will be held on Friday, December 8!

Our industry is unique in the fact that roughly 75% of us are constantly moving from jobsite to jobsite with travel all over the state and even throughout the country. So how can we know what is expected of us, or share the “Unmistakably E&V” vision if we are constantly disconnected? The Communication and Shared Vision Committee wants your input. We have assembled a very short survey to rate E&V’s current methods of communication. Please look for this survey in your email shortly following the newsletter. We hope that you will take the time to complete this short survey and offer any suggestions or ideas you might have. Committee Members: Ashley Donley, Maria Nykerk, Brett Lesiewicz, Jared Andersen

4 Ways to Make the Most of Quality Time For many working parents, spending quality time with children is a top priority, especially during the summer months when kids are out of school and longing to do fun things. Although it can be hard to find that quality time amid an 8-10 hour workday and mounting responsibilities at home, there are plenty of creative ways to maximize family time together. Bring quality family time into daily activities by including your children in the following activities: • Chores and errands • Exercise • Dinner time • Bedtime routine

Congratulations!

HALL PASS E&V employees are enjoying time off with their kids (family members) at school related functions!
