STILL LEADING FROM THE HEART
SCOTT WONDERGEM SENIOR FIELD MANAGER & ASST. SAFETY DIRECTOR As you are all aware, we reached an incredible milestone at the end of the day on September 11 when we achieved 4,500 days of no lost time due to injury, the equivalent of more than 12 years. I recently had the privilege of attending a conference on safety culture. During the two day, national conference I realized how aligned our company is with safety culture considered to be extraordinary. We do an amazing job engaging and empowering our employees through trainings, lunch and learns, corporate safety meetings and good catch reporting. When we do have a good catch, near miss or recordable, we respond to them with a positive approach. We use these incidences as a learning tool, a way to train and educate the entire team. Our safety inspections, whether in-house or third party are also meant to be a learning tool for each person involved in the project, from our leadership team to our trade partners. Some of you are on the safety committee, many of you have at least attended a safety committee meeting and hopefully understand their purpose. If you have an idea for positive change, or conversely, a concern, talk to a committee
member. They are always seeking input and happy to listen. Safety culture is a constantly moving target. To be successful, we need complete buy-in from the whole team. That team needs to openly communicate expectations to all personnel working on our project sites, including new hires and trades personnel. There are two levels of safety we are responsible for, internal and external. Internal, or personal responsibility, includes taking the initiative to ensure compliance, reinforcement of safe behaviors, a preventative (not reactive) mentality, personal commitment and steadfast standards. Safety externally, is taking those standards to the next level, ensuring not only personal safety, but the safety of every person on a project site. It takes being a team contributor and a shared commitment to goals, to secure enough buyin from all personnel that reinforcement of standards comes from the group-at-large, not just you. Remember, our goal is always to lead from the heart. Plan for a safe today, work for a safe tomorrow and always focus on a safe career.
Stay safe,
Scott Wondergem Page 1
WELCOME TO THE EV FAMILY! Recruiting the Next Generation It’s no secret that attracting young people to the trades is a challenge for the construction industry. There are a number of initiatives locally that are giving attention to correcting this issue. We have a number of people within our company that have a passion for bringing youth into construction and the company supports these initiatives in many ways and at all levels.

When Hamilton Schools asked if we’d be interested in putting together an exhibit for a program they call ‘Dig In,’ we said absolutely! Our team knocked it out of the park. We had two carpentry and interior finishes stations where the students were able to help build a couple of benches for their courtyard space, sand drywall, paint, and a few even dug into the drywall mud! Seeing our team interact with the students put a smile on my face the entire day, and as I write this, I have a warm feeling in my heart thinking about it. Brian White definitely worked as our team ‘shoe lace,’ connecting the pieces and parts to make sure we had everything we needed to be successful. Ron Johnson did the prep work so that the carpenters could build the benches easily. Teo Delorea built the interiors display so that we could show the students the different phases on interior finishes. When we showed up with our interiors display and it didn’t fit in the front door, Brian Englishmen came to the rescue and removed the mullions. Several more hands were involved in making the event a success: Justin Gould, Joe Shashaguay Jr., Juan Chavarria, Jordan Boeve, Ben Frederick, Ethan Gordon, Tom Sass, Cory Loomans, George Martinez and Parker Slagh. One of my favorite quotes of the day was ‘paint the wall, don’t paint your friends,’ said by the one and only… Matt Harburn. We received many compliments throughout the day about how engaged the students were with our activities and that our stations were many of the students’ favorite. At the end of the program the person responsible for coordinating the entire event pulled me aside and said, “you guys just have the best people, they were so awesome today!”
