STILL LEADING FROM THE HEART TONY ROUSSEY COO & SAFETY DIRECTOR As you are all aware, we reached an incredible milestone at the end of the day on September 11 when we achieved 4,500 days of no lost time due to injury, the equivalent of more than 12 years. Our company has been consistently ranked as a top place to work in the country by the Best and Brightest organization, due mostly to your dedication to personal excellence. Because of your tireless efforts and dedication to great work, particularly where safety is involved, we have been voted as Michigan Contractor of the Year, twice (Maybe we’ll earn the title for the third time on October 17th!). We have also earned numerous other local and national awards for safety, including a recent national award honoring our fantastic safety committee. We, the leadership at E&V, recognize that these achievements have not been an easy accomplishment. We realize that it is because of the thousands of hours each of you has dedicated to professional training and safety programs. Your diligence is unwavering. Not many other firms are able to say they do what we do, and we are proud to acknowledge the effort it takes to remain first-in-class. Did you know that since May 15, 2007, our field personnel have worked a total of over 2,268,000 hours without a lost time accident due to injury? That is an incredible number of hours performed by an outstanding group of personnel. Making that number even more impressive is the number of you that are part of our self perform teams that traditionally
carry higher risk —steel crew, concrete, sitework, carpentry, interiors, painting and firestopping. You are the lifeblood of our company and imperative to our success. Safety is a company-wide effort, not to save money on insurance premiums, but because we are morally and ethically obligated to “be our brother’s keeper”. It is our duty to work safely not only to spare injury to ourselves, but also to those with whom we are working. In 2018, 38 men and women from the State of Michigan never returned home from work. Each of them lost their life due to a work related accident in our industry. As of today (9/24/19) that number stands at 25 for the current year. Workers as young as 19 and as old as 64, men and women. Accidents don’t discriminate based on age, race, gender or any other factor; we are all equally as susceptible, so stay diligent. So, with all of that being said, never think twice about reporting an accident or injury, it is okay. As long as you work safely and do your best there won’t be a penalty because we know injuries are an unfortunate part of our business. We have been blessed with this amazing run of safety days, but someday it will come to an end and we will restart the clock. We are proud of our safety record, but we are more proud of our employees and your buy-in to our culture of safety and our promise to Lead from the Heart. Stay safe,

Ease the Burden on Family, Plan Ahead Your own mortality is not a topic most people enjoy talking about. However, did you know that a 2017 survey found that nearly 6 in 10 American adults don’t have a will? (https://www.caring.com/caregivers/estate-planning/wills-survey/2017-survey/) Dave Ramsey says that when you die without a will, you put unnecessary strain on your family. They are already grieving your loss so plan ahead to spare them the stress of dealing with legal fees and the time required to get all of your affairs in order. Elzinga & Volkers’ 401k provider has partnered with ARAG to help you prepare! They have a Will & Legal Document Center located right on the Principal website. You are able to prepare a will along with other documents such as a healthcare power of attorney, durable power of attorney and more. There are also online resources relating to estate planning education and tools. Wills are not just for wealthy people. They help you and your family prepare and ensure your wishes will be carried out! Follow these simple steps to start using these resources today at no additional cost: 1 | Visit principal.com/willprep. 2 | Set up your account. 3 | You’re in! Complete the forms or download the materials you need.
