ON LOCATION LifeChange Community Church Addition

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE Welcome to the 3rd issue of “On Location”. Quite a bit has changed since our last issue and it is very exciting to see the new building being erected. All of the foundations have been completed, as well as all of the interior concrete slabs & floor. All of the underground conduits and piping were installed prior to slabs. There is one CMU (Concrete Masonry Unit) wall along the Kid’s Center, which is installed along with the plumbing rough-ins in the wall for restroom sinks. Before the CMU wall went up, the east windows of the Kid’s Center were infilled. Curt Hielke Project Manager
The shell of the dumpster pad is taking shape. You also might notice some red painted steel. This is for the new entrance and connector areas to existing buildings. Another big milestone came when the PEMB (Pre-Engineered Metal Building) was delivered. The IMP (Insulated Metal Panels) were also delivered. The steel for the building will be erected in about a week. In the few weeks after, the IMP and roof will be installed. Curt Hielke, Project Manager CurtH@elzinga-volkers.com
FUN FACT The steel industry is the 2nd largest industry in the world at an estimated $900B turnover, only trailing the oil and gas industry. The U.S. is the third leading producer of steel behind Japan and China. Steel and iron will also expand when heated – in fact the Eiffel Tower is about 6 inches taller in the summer than in the winter. 69% of steel is recycled each year in North America – that’s equates to >80 million tons! Recycling a single steel can saves enough energy to power a 60-watt light bulb for 4 years, and Americans are recycling more than 600 steel cans per second on average!

Last week we made a jump with Pioneer Construction erecting the PEMB (preengineered metal building). They will detail the steel out this week, which consists of tightening all bolts to proper torque, welding connections where needed, installing cross bracing, testing, etc., at which point we’ll install the insulated metal panels. That will take about two weeks to set with the roof going on afterwards. While Pioneer is setting those panels, E&V will start metal stud framing with GR Electric, Peerbolts (HVAC) and Lameyer Plumbing to start MEP rough-ins.
SAFETY MATTERS Elzinga & Volkers is very proud of the safety culture we have instilled in our people and partners, but we are not perfect. In an effort to continually improve our safety program and introduce new perspective into our organization, Elzinga & Volkers utilizes a team of outside consultants to perform random, unannounced safety audits of our project sites. Our safety consultant Seth Wehner with SW MGT, has over 15 years of experience in construction safety and works with contractors all over the country creating world class safety programs. Seth is an Authorized OSHA 10 and 30-hour instructor, level one MIOSHA certified, and is a member of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE). Seth is an integral part of our safety team!

Greg and his crew have done a great job in a very short period of time. They will soon install the insulated metal panels (siding), as well as the roof panels and insulation.
