Safety Meetings and Initiatives

Over the past month, the following topics were discussed at our weekly safety meetings: »» Housekeeping

»» Don’t Fall Off the Scaffold

»» Bullying on the Jobsite

»» Lead Dust Hazards

In addition to these weekly safety topics, we held a site controlled access training on working with open access floor tiles. With the access panels removed, there is a 2’ drop that creates an immediate fall hazard to anyone working on the floor. Elzinga & Volkers Field Manager, Larry Wolters, recognized this potential hazard and reached out to Brian Gronda at MIOSHA to discuss possible solutions to mitigate this risk. We created a controlled access zone and trained everyone in the building on how to safely work under and around these openings. Professional Safety Solutions conducted a project-wide training and education session to discuss the hazards as well as the necessary steps to properly work around any openings. This has also been incorporated into Elzinga & Volkers site safety training required by all people working on the jobsite. Hazards continue to manifest as the project progresses, but with the help of MIOSHA and Professional Safety Solutions, we have been able to maintain a safe working environment and educate our trade contracting partner every step of the way.

Safety Week

Elzinga & Volkers is working to put together a Safety Week, which will start on March 21st with a kick-off symposium directed towards owners, supervisors, foremen and safety directors from our subcontracting partners throughout West Michigan. This symposium will touch on the importance of safety in our industry and how to create a strong safety culture in your company. We will include a number of speakers and presenters that are experts in construction safety. During the following week, March 24th – March 28th, we will hold various hands-on training sessions throughout the Grand Rapids region at little or no cost to attendees. These training sessions would target men and women working in the field. Our company is really looking forward to providing this opportunity to our trade partners!

Project Progress

Over the past month a significant amount of progress has been made on the interior and exterior of the building. On the exterior, we didn’t have any glass on the main curtainwall and we only had a minimal amount of framing in place. Throughout the month, Vos Glass installed all of the frames and glass. By having this completed, the temperatures in the building are slowly starting to rise, which creates a better working environment for everyone in the building. In addition to Vos Glass completing the main curtainwall, AMI started installing metal panels on the back side of the building and Bouma framers are on-site to wrap up the exterior metal studs. On the interior, the access flooring is in place and the metal studs and drywall have progressed significantly. The amount of work completed can be contributed to the number of people on-site. We had over 100 people onsite every day. Our interior drywall contractor, Ritsema Associates, had over 40 employees, and our MEP contractors Godwin Plumbing, Van Dyken Mechanical and Allied Electric have all increased manpower to meet production needs. On-site, everyone’s number on goal is to work safely together.
