Quadrant Diagram Explanation Due to the symmetrical configuration of the addition, Elzinga & Volkers has decided to phase the project in quadrants. You may hear someone on-site say, “Today, the floor slab in Quadrant #1 is being poured,” and find yourself asking where, exactly, that is. The quadrant system is simple to follow, and you’ll even find a color coded

The building’s footprint is quickly taking shape as crews from Creative Cement and Moretti Foundation Co. installed “trench footings,” which uses the earth as a mold for the concrete. A machine cuts a trench in the earth to a specified depth and width. The concrete is poured in and, with set compaction, the sides and bottom of the trench hold the concrete in place until in cures. This method is a major advantage since it is almost twice as fast as traditional strip footings and formed walls, and it does not sacrifice quality or strength. Rest assured that the new expansion will TOWSLEY settle on aVILLAGE solid foundation. OVERALL PLAN

from Godwin Plumbing started installing underground sanitary piping. All underground piping must be installed and inspected before we can lay the concrete floor slabs. Other work on-site includes: installing concrete block at the building footings, installing underground storm water piping and laying the new road that loops around the building addition. Offsite, work has begun on the wood wall sections for the building, which will be pre-manufactured and assembled on-site.

Trenching for footings
Safety Spotlight Steel bars embedded in the concrete reinforce building foundations. When these bars protrude from the concrete to allow other materials or concrete pours to connect, special caps are placed to reduce the risk of someone being impaled if they fall onto that area of the site. You can see thousands of these little orange caps on large construction sites, including ours.

Two Week Look Ahead
On-site work will move along quickly in the upcoming weeks. Moretti Foundation Co. will continue pouring the building’s foundations. Godwin Plumbing will run the under-slab sanitary plumbing that will eventually service the new sixty-six resident restrooms. After underground plumbing is installed, Higgins Excavating will lay and compact the sand base, giving the concrete slab a sturdy foundation to rest on. Creative Cement will then begin pouring the concrete slabs. They plan to pour all 47,000 square feet in only four pours! This means the site will bustle with concrete truck activity each day of this efficient, speedy pouring. - Jordan Gougeon, Asst. Project Manager jordang@elzinga-volkers.com
