expansion is a wood structure, so the team is taking precaution against these wood-eating insects. A termite resistant spray is being applied to the soil just before the concrete is poured. The spray will ensure that these pests don’t become a future problem for our new facility.

Executive Summary Getting Ready for Walls

Now that the crews are full of turkey and stuffing, they are ready to get back to work on the HFA Expansion site. Crews from Godwin Plumbing have finished all the underground plumbing, making way for the crews from Creative Cement. The concrete workers have completed Quadrants 3 and 4 this week and will begin preparing to pour quadrants 1 and 2 in the next week. Preparations for the concrete floor slabs include a layer of compacted sand, a termite spray, a plastic vapor barrier and, finally, reinforcing steel. So far, we have poured over 300 yards of concrete.

systems was needed, so it was critical that we took our time, even though we could have started the on-site installation sooner. These materials should begin arriving on-site in the next week or so. Things continue to move along well. We are all excited for the approaching milestones and the upcoming holiday. - John Parker, Project Manager jparker@elzinga-volkers.com

Safety Spotlight Everyday an estimated 1,000 eye injuries occur in U.S. workplaces. The financial cost of these injuries is enormous - more than $300 million per year in lost production time, medical expenses and worker’s compensation. No dollar figure can adequately reflect the personal toll these accidents take on the injured workers. Because of the high frequency of eye injuries on construction sites, Elzinga & Volkers requires all tradespeople and visitors to wear OSHA approved safety glasses while on-site.

Two Week Look Ahead

Over the next two weeks, Creative Cement will continue to pour the concrete slabs. Before the slabs can be poured in each quadrant, insulation and expansion paper needs to be installed. The insulation will be situated above the building foundation and below the slab to assure a thermal break between the foundation and slab, which keeps the floors warmer on chilly days. As the floor slabs progress, the framing crew from Chelsea Lumber will mobilize on-site. The crew will begin by laying out where each of the pre-manufactured wall panels will be set and breaking out the wall panels from the stacks they are delivered in. As Chelsea Lumber mobilizes, Elzinga & Volkers’ steel erectors will arrive on-site to begin setting the steel support columns. The upcoming weeks will be an exciting turning point as construction activity begins to transition from horizontal to vertical. - Jordan Gougeon, Asst. Project Manager

SUBCONTRACTOR

SPOTLIGHT In this issue, we would like to thank the hardworking plumbers of Godwin Plumbing and Heating. With other trades right on their tail, the crews from Godwin kept pace and finished all the underground plumbing right on time. We appreciate their hard work and commitment to the project. The
